Our smart meter was ‘melted’

JENNIFER LANG PHOTO

Aaron Hotell says this meter socket fitting was damaged.

By Jennifer Lang It started as a bit of a mystery. It was around 10:30 p.m. on a recent Tuesday, and the last customers of the evening were still finishing up their dinners when the lights at Cloverdale’s Vault Restaurant started to noticeably flicker and wane. At first, people thought it was a not-sosubtle hint that it was time to leave – like shutting off the music at closing time at a night club. “The lights would dim and go back on,” recalls Vault restaurant co-owner Aaron Hotell. “It was constantly surging. Customers said, ‘Are you trying to get us to leave?’” Hotell said his staff were baffled; nobody knew what was causing the lights to dim.

Curiosity turned into panic the next morning, when staff arrived to find the power was out in half the building, affecting the deep freezer, walk-in coolers and refrigerators storing meat and food. With thousands of dollars in food hanging in the balance, there was no time to waste. So Hotell called in an electrician, who soon discovered there was a problem with the smart meter installed at the back of the restaurant. A BC Hydro trouble technician was dispatched to turn off the power to the building, and Hotell’s electrician was given authorization to remove and replace the smart meter, which had been installed several months previously. The original smart meter was damaged – it was melted and covered in soot.

One of the four meter sockets was damaged as well; it appeared like it had been jammed into place, causing it to bend and crumple, something the electrician believed was causing the power to “arc out”, and creating power surges and the eventual loss of power to half the building on Oct. 16, Hotell said. The restaurant’s power problem was resolved, but serious questions lingered. According to spokesman Greg Alexis, BC Hydro has nearly completed its installation of 1.7 million wireless electricity meters, with very few problems reported. There have been more than 1,700 cases where there was pre-existing damage to a customer’s meter socket, including eroded

She understands the unique heritage and culture of the Cloverdale/ Port Kells area, keeping up to date with a wide-cross section of Shona Yuzwa the community, including business, residential and community groups, schools, faith groups, and more. She also helped fundraise for local charities, from the food bank and Cloverdale Christmas Hamper program to the Surrey Children’s Health Centre. Reid, a former B.C. Tourism and Transportation minister, MLA, and Corporation of Delta councillor, is a tireless promoter and community booster for Cloverdale. He’s particularly fond of calling Cloverdale “The Centre of the Universe,” a habit that prompted Coun. Linda Hepner, speaking at a Rotary Club roast in his honour a few years ago, to quip,” Bill has so many personas, he could be his own political party. No doubt he would call it, ‘Cloverdale First’.” He is also known as “Mr. Surrey” because he never stops promoting the city. “I can’t think of a more deserving individual,” said Woods, who worked with Reid on a number of community initiatives during his time as district commander. Reid’s colourful persona shouldn’t eclipse his many significant achievements and contributions to Cloverdale over the years. “He most likely does even more,” said Woods, who again called him “Most deserving. If anybody in this community should get this award, it’s Bill.”

Teen roars at Agriplex By Jennifer Lang The home arena advantage may have come into play for a local motocross competitor. Ethan Ladd placed first in all three of his amateur intermediate division events at the Cloverdale Agriplex, which hosted rounds one and two for the Canadian Arenacross Championships Oct. 19 and 20. Ladd, a Grade 12 student at Clayton Heights Secondary, also placed eighth overall in the Pro Am Lites division. He is planning to graduate early, in January, in order to devote himself to the sport. More than 2,000 fans packed the agriplex for two evenings of racing. Spencer Knowles of New Westminster placed first in the Pro Open and Pro Am Lites races both nights. The competition featured different classes and age groups, from young kids to pros. The races continue Nov. 2-3 and Nov. 8-9 in Chilliwack, with more races in the new year. The final races are Feb. 8-9 in Cloverdale.

or business that involve wiring is done by a qualified electrician. Hotell, meanwhile, fears his restaurant had a close call – he wonders what might have happened if the problem hadn’t been detected right away. “We’re talking about 240 volts – it’s the main power coming into the building,” he said. The smart meter was installed several months ago, about the same time as a number of other businesses in the historic town centre. “We’re questioning how many other meters were improperly installed,” he says. “With the age of all the buildings in the area, are we going to have more problems?” Hotell wants assurance that other smart meters in the historic downtown were done correctly. “I’d love it if they paid for at least my electrician. I just don’t want to think that everyone in town has been installed wrong. I just want assurance.” At presstime, BC Hydo’s customer service department and Hotell had not yet connected to resolve the issue of cost.

we will reimburse them for that expense,” Alexis said. “Our installers check the meter base during the meter exchange,” he said. “If they discover a problem with the customer’s base, we contact the homeowner and offer to bring in a qualified electrician to fix the problem at our expense.” After media reports of fires associated with the program, BC Hydro commissioned a study of residential fire reports by Surrey Fire Chief Len Garis and researcher Joseph Clare. It shows electrical fires have declined since new meters began. Alexis said there has been no evidence where a smart meter has been the cause of a fire, and added the meters themselves don’t carry a charge. Additionally, prior to the smart meter program, BC Hydro “routinely exchanged up to 40,000 meters per year,” he said. Customers who do notice sustained flickering lights throughout their home or business should contact BC Hydro. They should also ensure that any modifications to their home

By Jennifer Lang A short film about a time traveller who saves the world from a raccoon uprising has won the Surrey Little Theatre’s 50Hour Film Challenge. Screening awards for the fifth annual movie-making marathon – which challenges teams to write, shoot, and edit a short film over a single weekend – were held Oct. 20. As first-place winners, Batcave Casual Friday receives a $500 prize for Time Friends, which shows how the power of friendship is used to avert disaster, proving you never know “when” your friends are from. The all-male team is made up of alumni of the SLT’s youth group. An entertaining, well-written script won the judges’ votes. Second place and $200 went to the Film Hogs, a team of 15-year-old boys, and their 2012 effort, Skipping Out. The film

can affect your future. This action-packed film featured great cinematography and a well-coordinated soundtrack, and had judges on the edges of their seats. It’s the second year in a row Film Hogs have won second place at the challenge. Last year, the Hogs earned prizes for Sorry You’re Dead. As with this year’s winners, the Hogs met at the SLT Youth Group. Four attend Earl Marriott Secondary, except for Patrick Macht, a Grade 10 student at Clayton Heights Secondary. Teammate Daleal Monjazeb also won a week’s tuition for a media intensive program donated by the Gulf Island Film and Television School on Galiano Island. Every team that entered the competition received a year’s subscription to Reel West magazine. A total of $1,500-worth of prizes were awarded during the screenings.

The Importance of Remembering “When you stand here, be silent. When you leave here, be not silent.” This message appears on a memorial plaque to murdered Jewish children at a former camp at Neuengamme, Germany. It reminds Canadians like me, who have only known prosperity, peace, and freedom, to never take these things for granted. We are obligated to remember those who died in the mud almost 100 years ago at Vimy Ridge, and even more so, those Canadians who died in hopeless battles like Dieppe, seventy years ago. We need to recall and recount those bloody battles in Normandy, Italy, Holland and Belgium, where over 50,000 Canadians perished. This is not because we have a morbid fascination with violence, not because we love video games, but because the sacrifices made involved ordinary young people, who gave up comfortable lives and loving families in order to fight Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany. The very existence of democracy in Europe was threatened, and thousands of Canadians responded with selfless courage. Thousands more were injured and suffered hardship and grief. Their collective sacrifice helped bring an end to World War II and brought us years of sometimes fragile peace. Since then, Canada has won a hard-earned reputation as a nation Neighbourhood Bible Study committed to the sacrifices of keeping peace in the world. Our armed at Wired Monk at 16811 60th Ave forces have served in Korea, Egypt, Cyprus, and Afghanistan, to name from 7 to 9 pm on Wednesdays a few. Let’s keep this honourable tradition alive this year on Remembrance Day. Let us be silent there at the cenotaph for at least one minute. Let’s remember to talk to our children about the importance of remembering before and after that day arrives. Siebe DeJong This column is sponsored by the

She found your book A Chilliwack resident is hoping to locate a Cloverdale woman who lost everything in a fire – including a favourite book. Good Samaritan Phyllis Stearn says she bumped into the woman a few weeks ago, at the Value Village second hand store in Langley, where they were both perusing the used book section. “We just got talking, as book lovers do,” says Stearn, a book lover and school library volunteer. The woman said she’d lost everything in a fire at her previous residence in Victoria, including her book collection. “They were all gone,” Stearn says. “She asked me if I knew one author, and I said no, but it sounded familiar,” Stearn recalls. “Just jokingly, I said, ‘If I find it, I’ll put a ‘found book’ ad in the paper.’” After they parted, Stearn had trouble forgetting about the young woman’s request. “For some reason, I just wanted to look for it.” While browsing online, she came across the title of the 2006 novel in question. “I was able to find it plus some others I was looking for, and I picked them up today,” Stearn told the Reporter. Now, Stearn is hoping to locate the woman. The trouble is, she doesn’t know her name, or have her contact information. All she knows is she lives in Cloverdale, is 27 years old, and has dark hair. To the young woman who lost everything, please call 604-858-8153 (note: It’s long distance to Chilliwack).

Vitamin K for bones

Q

I have a family history of osteoporosis so I am taking calcium and vitamin D to help build up my bones; is there anything else I can do to help I make my bones stronger?

A

In addition to any supplementation, it is always important to maintain a healthy diet that can provide the trace minerals & adequate protein for healthy bone synthesis. Other than calcium and vitamin D, vitamin K2 (menaquinone) has been investigated for its benefits in bone-building by stimulating connective tissue production in bones. Supplementation with vitamin K2 has been shown to decrease the risk of fractures in the hip, vertebrae and throughout the body, regardless of whether calcium and vitamin D are also being used. MK-7 is a commercially available form of vitamin K2 made from the bacterial fermentation of soy that has a long half-life and can be found in supplements such as Organika’s Vitamin K+D supplement. The MK-4 form of vitamin K2 is more hypoallergenic as it is created synthetically and can be found in AOR’s “Vitamin K2”.

Microsoft decided to throw in a classic interface to use for PC’s. So, unless you plan on using it for your mobile device such as a tablet, then we won’t recommend it and stick with Windows 7, which will be a much better option. My husband re-did our Windows and now all our pictures are lost! Do not touch your computer as this will make matters worse. Unplug the computer and we’ll retrieve your data and pics. I’ve heard your train is now on youtube.com. Yes, indeed! Go to www.youtube.com & type in Cloverdale Computers. If you have any HO sized engines you would like to see running check them out on our track where they will tunnel through our walls! Do you provide a mobile tech service? YES!

What do you do about kids that want to quit? When parents inquire about a martial arts program we often hear the concern that their children have difficulty sticking with an activity and they are worried about committing to a program. As with most things, it is how we are taught to deal with the challenges and obstacles that we face in life that will determine what we do the next time we encounter difficulty. Each time a child quits when they get bored or things get difficult then in the future when obstacles arise it is much easier for them to quit again. Essentially if we allow them to quit, we are teaching them to be quitters. In Martial Arts the journey to Black Belt is hard (as is any goal worth achieving). Every class presents challenges that the student must overcome with the help of their instructors and peers. Just as with quitting, each time an obstacle is overcome the student learns that through persistence it is not 'am I going to continue' but 'what do I need to do to meet this challenge'. The lessons learned by conquering obstacles might be what it takes later in life to reach signicant goals such as graduating from high school or university or maybe getting that promotion at work. At Cloverdale Black Belt Academy the majority of students that enroll in their first class as a white belt, eventually reach the goal of Black Belt (an accomplishment that takes years to complete). Cloverdale Black Belt Academy, "Making the World a Better Place, One Black Belt at a Time!”

Q

Does the government offer any help for first time home buyers?

A

The government has a National Homebuyer’s plan which allows eligible applicants to withdraw up to $25,000 tax free from their registered retirement plan to purchase or build a qualifying home. To qualify for this plan, the buyer must not have owned a home as a principal residence for 4 years prior to the date of withdrawal of the funds. Also, the funds must be repaid back into the RRSP starting two years after the withdrawal and must be fully repaid within 15 years.
