Fire destroys 16th Avenue home BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

TODAY'S WEATHER

A hectic week for Creston Fire Rescue peaked on Oct. 23 when a house on 16th Avenue North was razed. The resident family escaped without harm from a blaze that was called in at about 6:20 a.m. “Upon arrival of the fire department, flames were coming from several windows, threatening the house next door,” said deputy fire Chief Michael Moore. “Fire crews were able to control the fire quickly to prevent damage to the neighbouring homes and finally extinguished the blaze after approximately two hours.” The cause of the blaze was determined to be accidental, with damage estimated at $350,000. “The occupants were very fortunate to have been awoken,” Moore said in reference to smoke alarms not being installed due to recent renovations in the home. “Smoke alarms are the most important item in your home to ensure you get out alive.” See SMOKE, page 4

“Most of the schools have participated and the kids are having a blast,” program co-ordinator Alexandra Dansereau said in a Canyon field last week. Dansereau smiled as a gung-ho Adam Robertson Elementary School (ARES) student arrived at her pickup truck (the lease

donated by Kokanee Ford) with yet another 50- or 60-pound box of potatoes. In the nearby field, more than 30 students, teachers and parent volunteers dug up plants and sifted through the soil to find the vegetables. See VOLUNTEERING, page 3

Volunteering builds values in students

From page 1 “This is great,” Dansereau laughed. “Usually I’m the one hauling the boxes!” Produce from Harvest Share is donated by property owners, and a large portion goes to the Creston Valley Gleaners Society food bank and other agencies throughout the Creston Valley. ARES principal Rod Giles says that Harvest Share participation helps students build values. “Kids harvesting food for other people is directly in line with our emphasis on citizenship,” he said. “It gets them outdoors for “The kids have a their daily physical activity and it builds good time, and teamwork. that’s a pretty “Experiential good benefit.” learning is the most Alexandra Dansereau powerful learning tool for any child.” Harvest Share More than that, he said, is the camaraderie that grows as students of different ages work alongside parents and teachers. “The kids have a good time, and that’s a pretty good benefit,” he said. Dansereau provided an impressive list of student harvest activities. ARES students had 52 Grade 6 and 7 students out on Sept. 20 to pick 860 pounds of pears and the Oct. 18 potato harvest brought in a total of 1,157 pounds of spuds. In September, three classes from Yaqan Nukiy School, along with preschoolers, picked 650 pounds of pears and brought in 250 pounds of potatoes. Fifty-five Canyon-Lister Elementary School students from Grades 5, 6 and 7 boxed up just short of a half-ton of potatoes. On Oct. 17, as part of the school’s Community Involvement Day, 16 Prince Charles Secondary School students harvested 950 pounds of pears. Youth involvement hasn’t stopped with school classes, either. Nine air cadets spent the afternoon of Oct. 18 picking 370 pounds of apples so they could make pies for fundraising. They also cleaned cull apples from the ground as a service and the culls will be used for livestock feed. Finally, the Creston and District Public Library reading club kids got in on the act in August. Three groups of kids from six to 12 years of age washed and sorted culled cherries to get them ready for donation to needy people. “Our sponsors this year are the province of British Columbia, Columbia Basin Trust, Creston-Kootenay Foundation and Kokanee Ford,” Dansereau said. “Without their generosity we wouldn’t have the Harvest Share program.”

Valley Mudders find new home

BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

After a year of searching, the Valley Mudders have a new home — and they’re looking forward to showing it off to the community during an open house from 2-5 p.m. Nov. 10. Formerly the Wynndel Mudders, the group has been working for a few weeks in its new location at Pair-A-Dice RV Park at 1322 Northwest Blvd. The group left Wynndel about a year ago, when the Wynndel Arts Centre began development and the clay group lost its space. “Clay needs a home,” said member Maureen Cameron. “To have a dedicated space that is just for clay work brings the group a feeling that so much is possible. … The dedication to stick together was there right from the beginning.” Over the last several years, the group has educated members in a variety of clay methods, sometimes through workshops featuring renowned clay artists. With the new centre, the Valley Mudders will continue to support emerging artists, while members work to keep the

centre sustainable. The centre offers several advantages for the 22 members, including the ability to use the facility whenever they choose. “People could be in at three in the morning if they wanted,” said Cameron. Although it’s only been in operation a

They quickly determined the source of the smoke was an electrical fire on the furnace in the basement. “This fire was detected very quickly from smoke alarms, keeping the damage very minimal,” Moore. The damage was under $500. •Moore credited a

vigilant neighbour on Lower Wynndel Road for reporting a possible fire in a residence across the street. It was determined that the smoke was actually steam coming from the dryer vent on the home before firefighters arrived, however. Moore recommends that as winter descends, residents should ensure furnaces and fireplaces are maintained and cleaned. They should be checked to ensure that combustible materials like storage boxes and clothing are not stored near baseboard heaters or other heating devices. Smoke alarms should be tested and batteries replaced as necessary. Testing can be done by blowing out a lit candle and holding it near the detector. “Your life may depend on it,” Moore said.

Pair use book to support pregnancy outreach BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Two of Creston’s creative geniuses have teamed to publish a book they call A Grateful Heart, and are donating all proceeds to a program that helps support new mothers. It all started in the summer, when Brandy Dyer began to mull over contest ideas to create awareness for her new store, Creative Fix (on 10th Avenue north, across from the fire hall). “I wondered who I could partner with who is good at marketing and is also creative,” Dyer said on Friday. “Of course I thought of Natalie.” Natalie Santano is a photographer, specializing in weddings and portraits. She also has a huge following on social media like Facebook.

“I wanted to have a contest that would have a really awesome prize,” said Dyer, whose Imagine Ink graphic arts business is at the back of Creative Fix. “I’m very grateful that I’ve been in business here for 12 years, so gratitude became a theme early in our discussions.” Dyer was so impressed with submissions from the public, mostly via Facebook, that she concluded a book was warranted. She went back to Santano with the suggestion that she pair short pieces about gratitude with Santano’s photographs (eventually Dyer used a few of her own pics, too). An artist who typically combines graphics with her paintings, Dyer set to work using her trademark style and A Grateful Heart was born. Dyer credits her partner, schoolteacher Grady Hunt, for the decision to direct the proceeds to the Pregnancy Outreach Program (POP). Hunt has worked for the Creston and District Community Resource Centre (CRC), the umbrella organization that operates POP. “I told him that I didn’t want to make money from the gratitude project, that it just didn’t seem right,” Dyer said. “He suggested POP and Natalie and I thought that gratitude and a program that supports new mothers was a perfect match.” “It is very gratifying to be offered a donation without having to ask,” said CRC executive director Serena Naeve. “This is the kind of people that Brandy and Natalie are — thoughtful and generous.” More than 100 people jammed into Creative Fix on Oct. 25 for the evening book launch, and the initial printing of 75 copies quickly sold out. One customer purchased 10 books for gifts. Dyer said she is placing another order immediately and is taking pre-orders for them now. For information, drop into Creative Fix or call 250-402-6071.

How did it become a race?

The most surprising thing about Tuesday’s U.S. presidential election is not that, if the recently notoriously inaccurate opinion polls are to be believed, it’s a neck-and-neck race. It’s that the American people have even allowed a Republican candidate into the race only four years after the debacle that was the George W. Bush area. Think about it. Bush walked into the job as head of a country that had enjoyed one of the planet’s greatest runs of economic success in history. In short order, that economy ground to a halt, the horrific and never fully explained air attacks on the World Trade Centre and other targets took place and, ensuing, Bush and his vice-president, Dick Cheney, were taking credit for another attack not having happened. Instead of responding to the bombings as a crime, the BushCheney brain trust sold them as an act of war so they could attack hated regimes in Afghanistan and Iraq. They conveniently ignored the fact that if any one country was responsible for the attacks it would have been Saudi Arabia. To their credit they did learn from the history of the Vietnam era — if you want to send young men to face death against an enemy they don’t even know, at least send them where the drugs are good. That Bush was so eager to send troops into battle was hardly a surprise, he himself having had the fortunate experience of never having to enter battle himself, thanks in all likelihood to the wealth and connections of his family. After an eight-year debacle so profoundly and wantonly incompetent that it dragged the entire world

Sad to see church turned into thrift store To the Editor: A few days ago, I had a very sad experience. I made the opportunity to check out the thrift store at the Trinity United Church. I thought it was some one-time effort, but here it was set up as a permanent business, the most beautiful church in Creston converted into a thrift shop. It is my understanding that the cost of heating the building was too high, so this action had to be taken. Canada is wallowing in oil, and the powers that be are stumbling over each other desperately trying to find someone, anyone, to buy our oil, while a church cannot afford to pay for the cost of heat. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, that scoundrel Hugo Chavez in Venezuela has nationalized the nation’s resources, and is selling gas to his citizens for two cents per litre. Should we be falling on bended knee and praying for our great capitalist system? I think it sure needs help. I think there is food for thought here. Alex Ewashen Creston

Votes in Scotiabank contest appreciated To the Editor: The last regional game changer in the Scotiabank Game Changers for the BC Lions has been selected and no, it was not Alex Nilsson. A welldeserving lady from Kelowna was awarded the last place of regional game changer. We extend our thanks to all who voted and voted every day, and who asked family and friends to assist. That

was a great effort from many people! We are grateful and appreciative. To Myrna Johnson, our campaign manager, a big thank you. We also thank Creston businesses for being so supportive. But all is not lost. Alex’s selected charity, the Creston-Kootenay Foundation, received an anonymous donation of $1,000 to initiate an endowment fund in the name of Creston and District Society for Community Living’s Therapeutic Riding Program. Wow, the universe works in wondrous ways! Just to clarify for persons not aware of the Scotiabank Game Changers competition. The regional game changer selected receives $1,000 for the charity of his/her choice and qualifies for the national competition, when one person receives $100,000 for the charity of their choice. Again, a huge thanks to all who voted and supported Alex Nilsson. Creston area is a really smart and caring community, the vision for Community Foundations of Canada. Nicole Nilsson Creston

‘Despot’ Harper signs bad deal with China To the Editor: Thirty-one years is a long time for Canada to commit to a trade deal that Canadians haven’t even had a chance to debate or find out the details. For 31 years, Canada can get sued by the Chinese if we threaten any of their potential earnings by limiting their business in Canada. For 31 years the Chinese government will have more rights than Canadians to determine what happens to our environment in our own country. Even if we vote in a beneficial government next time that puts the priority on training Canadians instead of hiring temporary Chinese slave workers, the Conservative government is by law locking Canadians into a deal that we cannot get out of without funneling all our taxpayer dollars into court fines. Harper is committing economic

treason with the Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA) and we don’t seem to be able to stop him. People are not going to accept this. Trouble is coming — planning ahead, Harper has given permission for the FBI and the CIA to take care of Canadian troublemakers and install them in his prisons for profit. Lawyers, we need you now! There must be some way to get clear of this despot! Susan Eyre Yahk

New deal allows China to sue Canada To the Editor: I am writing to express my concern about the Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA), the new trade agreement that Canada is about to enter into with China. Stephen Harper signed it in Vladivostok, Russia, on Sept. 8 and tabled it in the House of Commons on Sept. 26. It is due to become law Nov. 2. Most people are only now becoming aware that this is happening. I can’t believe that our federal government would commit us to the biggest trade deal since the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) without any discussion, debate or vote. This deal will make it easy for Chinese companies to buy up huge amounts of Canadian resources. After that, the Chinese can sue Canada in a secret tribunal if any level of government from federal to municipal makes any regulation that impacts the Chinese company’s expected profits. Also, we’ll be locked into this treaty for over 30 years. It’s absolutely ridiculous that our government would try to slide something like this through without most Canadians even being aware. I hope my fellow citizens will pick up their phones to contact their MPs and insist that this deal be deferred until Canadians have a chance to understand and debate its ramifications. No substance to message of hope

From page 6 As good a communicator as President Obama can be, his greatest message has been one of hope (so great that Romney has co-opted it late in the campaign), and not of how to achieve it. despite his inability to get co-operation from his opponents in Congress, might eventually be judged as a miracle, though. Fall in full swing at community complex

With fall officially here (a.k.a. the first dose of the white stuff), we are busy doing the same things you are around your house: drain and roll up hoses, blow out the

clearing and the increased cleaning necessary for the inside of the building because we haven’t reached the stage, nor do I ever see us there, of everyone nicely taking off their boots at the front door and neatly placing them in a row. All the fall activities are firing up around town, as well — for instance, last Neil Ostafichuk weekend we loaded up the sprinkler system, get the grass cut truck at home and made stops at one last time, try and pick up the the recycling depot, the bottle junk laying around before the depot and the Hazardous Waste permanent blanket of snow Roundup being held at the Creston removes it from our sight and and District Community Complex make sure all the mechanical sys- parking lot. PAWS Volunteer of the Month for October is Carol Freeman-Ryll

As treasurer of the Board, Carol is responsible for financial management of the shelter, but her contributions do not end there. Her energy and drive, whether seeking funding or wielding a hammer or a paintbrush, or driving the tractor, has contributed greatly to the completion of the caretaker’s cottage this fall. She is equally adept at recruiting volunteers or scooping poop. She and her PAWS rescue dog Sheba are in the office regularly to welcome visitors and new residents to the shelter. She is a star in the firmament that is PAWS. Thanks, Carol- We couldn’t do what we do without you! This ad space donated by the Creston Valley Advance

around town: we also saw a snowmobile swap meet happening in the same parking lot, regular minor hockey at the rink, the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market going full swing, a coat sale at Gleaners and were aware of a whole raft of music or entertainment happening at various venues around town over the weekend. Once again, for those that say there is nothing to do, well... We always like to hear how we are doing at the community complex — if the experience or facility is good, we want to continue or improve upon that; if there was a problem or complaint, we will try and act upon it. Of course, as in life, everything can’t always be perfect — someone wants music in the pool, someone else doesn’t, the room is too hot for one, it’s just right or too cool for another. That’s

just the price of doing business with a large number of individuals, and it is what keeps things interesting and sometimes challenging. One thing is for certain, though; we will never tire of hearing people say good things about your community complex and I will always endeavour to share those thoughts with you because it is important, and it reinforces why we have it in the first place. Case in point: The other week I was chatting with a young woman who is from San Francisco and was visiting her grandfather for the weekend. Looking for something to do along with her three-year-old son and having shopped downtown, checked out the coat sale and not having any hazardous waste to drop off, decided to check out our pool. She couldn’t say enough about it and was amazed we had such a facility

available to us here. She ended up coming swimming all the days she was here and even brought her grandfather up to get his golden age pass, which allows anyone 85 years and older to use the facility at no cost. With the grandfather at 96 years and the great-grandson at three years, it really accented the span of ages that the facility is available to. While I know we have had virtually newborns using the facility (not by themselves, of course) I believe this fellow is our oldest member currently. It’s interesting — when we create programs and enter them into the computer, we typically use a default setting of 0-99 years of age. Who would have ever guessed that we are now crowding those boundaries? Neil Ostafichuk is the recreation supervisor at the Creston and District Community Complex.

Chamber of commerce keeps active in community

Well, October has just flown by, I guess, in part, to us being so busy at the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce. While tourist numbers are slowing down now, as of the end of October we had seen almost 16,000 people come through our doors looking for information, use our free Wi-Fi, get directions, ask about local services, places to eat, places to stay and things to do (and of course use the public washroom). Top on the list of requests include: 1. Where to get fresh and u-pick fruit; 2. Where the corn mazes, pumpkin patches, farm tours (agritourism opportunity) are; 3. Horseback riding (another business opportunity); 4. Hiking/biking trails; 5. Wildlife centre; 6. Farm market; and 7. Art galleries. Overall, our tourism numbers are up almost 11 per cent from 2011. Lots of other things are going on, too. We had a great presentation by Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) BC president Barry O’Neill on the Ten Percent Shift, a shop local strategy. The big thing about the Shift is that it is not intended to guilt you into anything or require anything from you. It is not saying buy local and that you should buy local at any cost to you, or that you’re letting down “the team” if you don’t. What it is saying is that you should think local first: “I need X product — can I purchase it from a local producer or retailer?” There was an excellent turnout for the first event planners meeting on Oct. 17. Over 25 different groups/organizations and events were represented. The focus was on working together planning community activities and using crestonevents.ca to avoid scheduling conflicts. We discussed sharing information with the chamber to get event messages on the free electronic message board and get information packages out to tourists and press releases to media. The group discussed creating festival packages so we could jointly market our events, saving each of us time,

money and reaching a bigger potential audience than we could individually. The next event coordinators meeting will be held in January. Speaking of community special events, the chamber is very pleased to be involved with the new Creston Valley Bird Fest being organized for May 10 and 11. The festival is in conjunction with World Migratory Bird Day. The group is very excited about the possibilities of Jim Jacobsen this event and our ability to capitalize on the enormous tourism and economic potential of bird watching and related ecotourism. Birding is one of the fastest growing recreational activities in the world. According to information from a US Fish and Wildlife Service survey, 90 million people (38 per cent of all Americans 16 years and older) participated in wildlife-related recreation in 2011 and spent $145 billion dollars, with nearby Montana having the highest participation rates in the country (source: Garner News, “National survey of outdoor sports surprising”). That is a lot of potential! Other projects the chamber is working on include: finishing touches on our new marketing strategy, Creston Valley: Growing Together, including a brand new Creston Valley website for tourism and economic development, an agriculture sector development project with Columbia Basin Trust, a banner art project, a new ecotourism map, and the 2013 Home and Garden Show featuring the annual quilters guild show and sale on April 12 and 13. Next up is the annual Santa Claus Parade of Lights and Festival on Dec. 1. Parade entry forms are now available at the chamber office. The parade will take place from 6-7 p.m. along Canyon Street from (16th to 10th avenues). New this year, we will be having a special holiday decorating event on Nov. 17 with local artists Sandy Kunze and Cory Cannon creating decorations for the Spirit of Creston Square. Call the chamber at 250-428-4342 to learn more. Remember to take the shop local pledge at www.tenpercentshift.ca. Jim Jacobsen is the executive director of the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Tech career opportunities booming in B.C. Black Press

“British Columbia has a ready source of great jobs and careers in technology. Our education programs need to keep up with that demand.” John Leech, executive director of the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC, explains, “Every system we rely on — water, roads and transportation, telecommunications and Internet, hydro and natural gas, environment, health, forestry, and many more — utilizes engineering and applied science technology professionals working in the background. B.C.’s telecom and IT, animation and many other sectors produce new careers every month.” ASTTBC has more than 10,000 members currently working in thousands of careers available to graduates of two-year diploma programs available at the British Columbia Institute of Technology and other B.C. colleges and institutes. “Our members enjoy rewarding, wellpaid and often recession-proof careers in public service and the private sector alike,” Leech states. “For huge numbers of young men and women, technology is the answer. In B.C. and across Canada, technology permeates every workplace and job. We need to get capable students involved and engaged in applied sciences and head off workforce shortages by building a B.C. ‘science and technology culture’.” Leech calls on government for renewed efforts to build student skills and confidence in math and science programming.

“We especially need to interest young students in science and how things work,” Leech says. “Young students use technology every day — smart phones, iPads and computers. They play video games, even build robots.” Leech lauds the recent Year of Science program that encouraged students toward so-called STEM subjects — science, technology, engineering and math. Citing the recent $6 million B.C. campaign to encourage careers in trades, Leech urges a similar effort to build awareness of engineering technology education and careers. BC Technology Industries Association employers like Telus and BC Hydro and many smaller technology-rich companies say the single most important position they now struggle to fill is specialty technician/technologist. Even the Canadian Council of Chief Executives expressed concern that only 37 per cent of 16- to 18-year-olds were interested in taking even one post-secondary course in sciences, according to a recent Angus Reid survey. Leech says the opportunities for those seeking work in the technology field are considerable given a wave of retirements of present-generation B.C. technology professionals that is already underway. “Half of our membership is now middle-aged at 45-plus, and 22 per cent are over age 55,” he says. “Every region of B.C. shows growing demand. New two-year technology diploma programs are still needed in the north and central B.C. However, young people are investing to travel so they can earn the necessary tech qualifications.”

It would appear their investment is a smart move, as it will result in a broad range of career opportunities. Industries in all regions of B.C. support programs for local trainees to fill engineering and applied science technologist, technician and technical specialist positions.

Heather Andreychuk and Paul O’Neill are recent Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC Technology Award recipients. Andreychuk is supervisor of transportation engineering for the City of Prince George, overseeing major construction projects, and O’Neill works in the FortisBC electricity calibration lab in Penticton. Two changes of personnel were recorded on the board of directors of the Creston-Kootenay Foundation (CKF) as the organization celebrated a year of significant growth at its annual general meeting on Oct. 24. Sherri Fowler joined the board, replacing Bob Ewashen, who retired. Fowler was elected to a one-year term, as was Larry Brierley, who has chaired the board since the CKF’s founding. Creston town councillor Joanna Wilson continues to represent the local government entities in the area served by the CKF for another year. Elected to three-year terms after serving one year were Heather Suttie and Ted Hutchinson. One vacancy on the 10-member board remains to be filled. On the fiscal front, the financial statement presented by the CKF’s auditors, GadikeMinichiello-Carr, showed net assets at the year ending May 31, 2012, of $846,533, up from $624,855 a year earlier. As Brierley noted in presenting a brief history of the organization, the Creston-Kootenay Foundation is a community foundation with membership in the Community Foundations of Canada. It accepts donations in the form of cash, stocks and bonds, real estate, bequests and art. These assets are invested in perpetuity and some of the interest they generate is distributed annually through grants to non-profit groups providing community services in the Yahk-toRiondel area. Its registration with the Canada Revenue Agency allows the foundation to issue income tax-deduction receipts to its donors. In his annual report, Brierley noted that the CKF had made grants totalling $35,000 in 2011. Major recipients were the Creston and District Society for Community Living’s Therapeutic Riding Program and, in partnership with the Tuck Shop at the Creston Valley Hospital, the Interior Health Authority and the East Kootenay Foundation for Health, for the purchase of a new colonoscope for the local hospital. Brierley also recalled that a very successful soiree was staged in June, in co-operation with the greenhouse group at the local branch of the College of the Rockies and he thanked CKF director Nicole Nilsson, who was primarily responsible for organizing the event and the Creston Community Band and the Prince Charles Secondary School AVID students for their volunteer help. Another target of the chair’s gratitude was Alex Nilsson, whose 24-hour golf marathon on the longest day of the year was highly successful in attracting donations. Finally, Brierley noted that the CKF has the lowest administration costs among community foundations in the Columbia Basin, with all its board members volunteering their time. At a board meeting following the AGM, Brierley was re-elected as the foundation’s chair. Hutchinson, who continues to head the investment committee, was chosen as vice-chair, while Vern Ronmark and Suttie were returned as treasurer and secretary, respectively.

Tims donates $5,040 to Creston hospital’s Tuck Shop TIM HORTONS and TUCK SHOP

The annual Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign took place from Sept. 17-24, and thanks to the efforts of the team at Tim Hortons and volunteers from the Creston Valley Hospital Tuck Shop, over 5,040 cookies were sold. “All of those Smile Cookies seem to stare back at you by the end of the week,” said Creston

Tim Hortons manager Scott Seitz. “But by far it’s the smiles I see on the faces of the Creston Tuck Shop ladies that makes it all worth it. That because we know this funding is helping our local hospital.” This is the third year that the two organizations have worked together to bring either a piece of equipment or some kind of patient comfort to the Creston Valley Hospital. The chunky chocolate chip delights this year

are seeing $5,040 being allocated to furnishing a CVH room. The Tuck Shop wishes to thank all those that supported the campaign and for continuing to show Seitz and those at Tim Hortons that Creston is a place of giving and is truly making a difference in health care, one cookie at a time. For more information on the work of the Tuck Shop, contact Mabel McCowan at 250-8665245.

Footlighters holding auditions for production of musical, Annie FOOTLIGHTERS THEATRE SOCIETY

Life can be rough, but it’s nothing compared to the hard-knock life of seven girls living in the New York City Municipal Orphanage — run by the nasty Miss Hannigan — in 1933. Of course, there is a lot of fun in store for the girls who will play those characters in Footlighters Theatre Society’s spring production of Annie. To choose them, a round of girls-only auditions will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Snoring Sasquatch. “We had two dozen girls try out for four parts in The Sound of Music,” said director Brian Lawrence. “We have seven parts available this time around, so we’re anticipating a big crowd.” One of those seven is Annie, a tough-as-nails yet bravely optimistic 11-year-old who dreams of one day finding her parents. “This is a big part,” said Lawrence. “Annie sings, or participates in, eleven songs and reprises — and she’s in nearly every scene. And she has to be able to belt that last note of Tomorrow!” The other orphans are described in the script as “Molly, the little, who is six; Kate, the next-to-littlest, who is 7; Tessie, the crybaby, who is 10;

Pepper, the toughest, who is 12; July, the quietest, who is 13; and Duffy, the biggest, who is also 13.” Those six take part in four songs and reprises, and must be able to sing and perform simple choreography. “The ages given in the script are a guideline,” said Lawrence. “We’ll take the best performers we can find even if their ages don’t match exactly.” To assist the actors with their music, Footlighters will again be enlisting the talents of music director Geri Buchanan. Together, she and Lawrence previously staged The Music Man, The Sound of Music and last season’s non-musical, Deathtrap. Next week’s auditions are just the beginning — auditions for all other roles in Annie will be held Nov. 18 at the Snoring Sasquatch. Those roles include Oliver Warbucks, Miss Hannigan, Grace Farrell, Rooster Hannigan and Lily St. Regis, as well as smaller parts, such as President Roosevelt, and chorus. “This is a really fun and touching show,” said Lawrence. “I’m looking forward to working on it, and it all starts with finding our Annie.” For more information contact Brian Lawrence at 250-428-2266 ext. 103 or editor@crestonvalleyadvance. ca, or Geri Buchanan at 250-428-5562.

Old culverts (above) at the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area are being replaced with new ones (right).

Ducks Unlimited investing in CVWMA upgrades CRESTON VALLEY WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY

Water control infrastructure upgrades are in full swing at the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area. Ducks Unlimited Canada is investing in upgrading and fixing several water control structures (culverts) and repairing some of the dikes. The work is progressing nicely and is expected to be completed sometime in November. This work is necessary to ensure the long-term management of this important wetland. The system of dikes and culverts

allows the CVWMA to manage the water levels and therefore the wetland habitat. Many of these structures are aging and in need of repair. Thanks to DUC, multiple projects are being done this fall, which does mean some inconvenience to people wanting to use sections of the dikes, but the CVWMA hopes people understand and have patience — things should be back to normal sometime in November. Areas with construction taking place include the Corn Creek Marsh, located near the Wildlife Interpretation Centre, and the Leach Lake unit, located north of the centre and accessed through the

Summit Creek Recreation Area. Some of the dikes are having the “rodent runs”, made by muskrats and otters, repaired. The holes created by these runs have weakened the dikes over the years. Excavators are digging trenches two metrers deep and 1.5 meters wide, and then repacking the dirt to cut off the tunnels that run from one side to the other. Please use caution if you come across these areas while work is in progress. With the coming rains, these areas are also going to be muddy and slippery until a layer of gravel is added in the spring (settling has to occur before the top layer of gravel is added).

Most dikes will remain open to the public for the duration of the work, but there will be temporary closures to allow the work to be conducted safely. Large machinery and truck traffic will be on the dikes near the construction zones in Corn Creek and Leach Lake. Areas of closure will be of short durations and marked with signage. Pedestrian access will be limited in these areas, so please obey the signs and do not venture into the construction zones. The CVWMA appreciates everyone’s patience during this upgrade process. It is an investment in the continued future of the CVWMA.

Lifelong passion leads to artistic career art

Who: Eileen Gidman What: Watercolours and fabric

Where: Her home studio in Arrow Creek, winters in Yuma, Ariz. When: She’s been making art since she can remember Why: “I loved art from day one.”

BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff Eileen Gidman loved her nursing career, one she spent 20 years at. But she’s taken everything she learned from that experience, added a lifelong interest in painting and is now carving out a career in her true passion, art. Born in Bentley, Alta., the youngest of four siblings, Gidman grew up in Dawson Creek and then came to spend a year with an aunt and uncle who lived in Canyon when she was 16. She completed her high school education at Prince Charles Secondary School, where art teacher John Grigoruk was a well-known figure. It wasn’t her first education in art, though. “I took my first adult education course in art when I was about 13,” she recalls. “My mother realized I wasn’t going to be a basketball player even though I was tall so I got enrolled in an art course because that was where my interest was right from the beginning. “I loved art from day one. It’s not in my family, so I don’t really know why. I have early memories of Grade 2, painting watercolours.” Her nursing career also was varied. For nine years she also taught the resident care aide program at the College of the Rockies, learning that even an introvert can stand in

front of a classroom when she is confident about her subject. While she was nursing, she took any art classes she could. “I’ve had a lot of mentors,” she says. “I would say that (artist and former PCSS art teacher) Ute Bachinski has been my strongest role model. More than anything, I have learned to be who I am by watching other people and emulating what I like in them. “Ute shares everything about art and when I was transitioning from nursing to art she was very strong in helping me be the person I wanted to be.” Gidman describes herself as a lifelong learner, and credits her husband for giving her the support to follow her passion. “Whatever has come to me in art has come to me through nursing and everything else I have done in life, including building a log house. I built 50 per cent of my home and that self-reliance and discipline comes through in my art life. “After about 20 years in my nursing career I started to realize, with encouragement from my husband, Greg, that if I was going pursue an art career I had to do it, as time was ticking.” She went to Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver to get a certificate in art and has returned several times since. “That gave me the confidence to change,” she says. “I think where I am today is I’m more mature and I know who I am. I am not as afraid to share that in the world. My husband has given me a lot of confidence — without him I’d still be painting in the basement. He’s encouraged me to get out there and share myself. “I’ve done a lot of textile work in the last five years. It’s not traditional type of artwork. I fight the craft/art thing a lot but it’s of great interest to me. It’s who I am and I’m going to do that.” When she took an interest in working with textiles, there weren’t a lot of opportunities, at least regionally, to take classes. But Elaine and Andy Alfoldy, who have been making cloth and paper batiks for most of their very successful careers, have served both as examples. Now, she herself is becoming the teacher. “I’m just starting to share what I

have learned over five or six years with others because it was a lot of learning, a hard row to hoe,” she says. A plein air (outdoor) painting enthusiast, Gidman likes to paint what she sees around her Arrow Creek neighbourhood — scenes, plants and flowers, clothes hanging to dry outdoors (more about that shortly) — and to get out on hikes. “I had the most wonderful experience this year to go to Cathedral Lakes, out of Keremeos, on a hiking trip,” she says. “I got to paint there in fields of flowers, on the top of mountains. One of the things I’m very, very proud of is that I painted a mountain goat.” She had been watching the animals and sketching from a distance for a couple of days, and was prepared when she saw a mountain goat coming back from the lake. “I got maybe a three-minute watercolour sketch of him and I’m so proud of that. I’m so happy. It’s a rarity.” See GIDMAN, page 28

What is up with the FLU Vaccine Recall? Many people have no doubt taken notice of recent stories in the media regarding a problem with this year’s flu vaccine. In Canada there are five manufacturers licensed to produce the flu vaccine. Abbott labs which makes Influvac, AstraZeneca which produces FluMist, GlaxoSmithKline which distributes Fluviral, Novartis which markets the 2 flu vaccines Agriflu and Fluad, and Sanofi Pasteur which supplies 3 vaccines - Fluzone, Instanza and Vaxigrip. (Vaxigrip is the vaccine used by Creston Pharmasave this year). Each year scientists at the World Health Organization research trends in flu spread and predict which flu strains are likely to strike each year. The flu vaccines in Canada provide immunity to the 3 influenza strains most likely to strike as determined by these scientists. All products are manufactured by a process that is in accordance with international standards. The production of all vaccines currently available in Canada involves the use of chicken eggs which means that all vaccines may contain trace amounts of egg proteins. The vaccines that have been cited as potential problems are those made by Novartis ( i.e. Agriflu

1118 Canyon Street • 250-428-9080 Locally owned and operated • FREE Delivery

and Fluad). Health Canada asked Novartis to suspend the distribution of these 2 vaccines in Canada pending further examination of white floating material which was discovered clumping in the vaccines supplied to several European countries. Clumping in vaccines is not an uncommon occurrence; however, as a precautionary step distribution of the vaccines has been halted until a review is completed. To date the Public Health Agency of Canada has not received any reports of unexpected adverse effects or serious side effects related to the use of these vaccines. All other vaccines are NOT affected. Each province contracts its own supply of vaccine. It is estimated that in B.C. 30% of all purchased vaccines were obtained from Novartis. In Manitoba only 1% of the vaccine supply is affected. In Alberta 22% of the vaccine supply is compromised. At this time Interior Health is still advising individuals who are at risk from the seasonal flu to continue to get vaccinated with supplies of vaccine that are unaffected by these problems. To date one million doses of the Novartis vaccine have been administered with no unexpected adverse effects noted. Heath Canada remains vigilant and should a safety concern be identified immediate action will be taken and the public will be notified. If you have any further questions please contact your doctor, pharmacist, or local public health department.

She started working at an early age and one of her Àrst Mobs was a housekeeper for the Spiers family. After marrying William (Bill) Wocknitz and living in various communities in BC, they returned to Creston upon Bill’s retirement as a business representative with the Operating Engineers. Violet was preceded in death by her husband Bill, her parents John and Margaret Parkin (Creston Pioneers), as well as all her brothers and sisters. She leaves to grieve her passing one son Ken (Patsy) Wocknitz of Fraser Lake BC, as well as three beloved grandchildren, Catie, Steven and Jordan. Numerous nieces, grand nieces, and great-grand nieces and nephews, grand nephews and great-grand nephews and their families on both the Wocknitz and Parkin sides will also miss her. Violet was a dedicated caregiver and homemaker. She looked after her siblings’ children as three sisters were conÀned to a sanatorium at various times. Her niece Martha and husband Bill Marken were close friends as well as Robert and Verna (Bill’s sister) Fleck (all deceased) and their families. She had many friends in and around Creston; two of her dearest friends were Vona Anderson and Eileen Jesson. Auntie Violet had a subtle but wicked sense of humor and she kept us light and taught us not to take ourselves too seriously. We will remember the Moy and laughter she brought to our lives. She died as she lived, quietly and peacefully, at North Okanagan Hospice House in Vernon surrounded by loving family with the tender care of hospice personnel. Interment will take place in Erickson, BC at Forest Lawn Cemetery in the spring of 2013. Thunder Cats beat Border Bruins, Rockets BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

The Creston Valley Thunder Cats earned two wins at home on the weekend, beating the Grand Forks Border Bruins 9-3 and the Golden Rockets 7-3. Sunday’s victory over the Rockets was particularly sweet, as it followed a 2-1 loss in Golden on Friday. “We had our chances,” said Thunder Cats head coach Josh Hepditch. “Unfortunately, a

goal was called back in the third period. We were right there and just couldn’t find a way to get that extra goal.” He said the teams were well matched in an “even-keel game” that saw two Golden goals in the second period. Two returning players — Creston’s Matti Jmaeff, who started on the Nelson Leafs this season, and Jesse Collins — gave the Thunder Cats their only goal early in the third period, with Collins scoring and Jmaeff assisting. “They made an instant impression on the team,” Hepditch said. The Thunder Cats played in Creston on Saturday, taking on the Border Bruins. Although the visitors are a more competitive team this season than in previous years, the Thunder Cats outshot the Border Bruins 49-29, with 10 Thunder Cats earning points that night. There was no scoring in the first period, but goals by Trevor LeBlanc, Trevor Hanna, Brady Ward, Joey Berget, Collins and Marcel Fuchs, gave the Thunder Cats a five-goal lead by the end of the second. The Border Bruins started third-period scoring with an early goal, but Hanna scored the Thunder Cats’ seventh less than two minutes later. After another goal by Grand Forks, Collins and Hanna each scored, with Hanna earning a second hat trick in as many weekends. “Saturday was finally the breakout game we were looking for — we exploded for one game, which was nice to see,” said Hepditch, who added that he was impressed with the line of Collins, Hanna and Colby Livingstone, who earned 12 points between them. Sunday’s win over the Golden Rockets was much needed, as the Thunder Cats now sit three points behind them, with 14, in the standings for the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s Eddie Mountain Division. The Kimberley Dynamiters and Fernie Ghostriders lead with, respectively, 20 and 19 points, and the Columbia Valley Rockies are a point behind the Thunder Cats with 13. “The guys were ready to go and they stuck to the game plan all game,” said Hepditch. There was no scoring in the first period, but Jmaeff scored early in the second, with two Rockets goals following about one and 10 minutes later. The third period saw a big change with Kevin Warwick (two), Collins (two), Angus Johnston and Andrew Hodder scoring, while the Rockets managed only one more goal.

Creston Valley Thunder Cat Andrew Johnston (20) evades a Grand Forks player as teammate Matthew Sonntag looks on.

The Thunder Cats stay at home this weekend, the team’s first parents weekend, to host the Osoyoos Coyotes on Friday and the Kimberley Dynamiters on Saturday. The Coyotes are at the top of Okanagan Division with 24 points, which could make for a tough game, but

Hepditch is most looking forward to seeing the Thunder Cats take on the Dynamiters. “It’s going to be a good measuring stick for us,” he said. “And obviously, Kimberley’s had our number in the last couple games, so we’re going to have another crack at them.”

I’ve clipped it out of the paper every year and it sits on my fridge. “This year I sent off an email to them about my Clothesline Series to say I

have my work in shows, trying to promote clotheslines usage. They were very interested and tweeted it around and then got back to me after a few months and asked me if I would paint a painting for them. How cool. So I did.” Fortis has since used the painting as part of an award presentation to help promote conservation efforts.

“Artists throughout history have had a voice to make change and speak for issues. I’ve had some percolating in the back of my mind about Creston for quite a while,” she smiles. Gidman’s self-confidence and passion for sharing is reflected in the way she approaches her textile art. Some pieces she finishes in frames or quilt-style. Others are intended for the purchaser to use as part of their own creation. “People can take my work and put it into their own work, into a wall hanging or a quilt. And they are often scared to do so. It’s a big excitement for me when they do. Sometimes they just frame it, which is fine, too. “Some pieces I’ve cut right into strips so people know it’s okay to make something with them. “I’ve had people commission me for a particular show they are in of textiles, like maybe a theme. I’ll produce something for them and they will maybe applique on it or something. I’ve had somebody win an award for that combined work. I’m so proud of that.” Like many artists, Gidman has no illusions of getting rich with her creations. But she is learning to treat art as a vocation that deserves her best marketing efforts. “I like to sell my work but most-

ly it’s to share it with others more than the financial rewards.” To promote her art, she has taken up blogging and is building a following on Facebook. She credits Community Futures for helping small business people learn about social marketing and she now meets monthly with a group of artists who gather to talk, not about art, but about the business of art. Gidman has shows planned for Cranbrook (Key City Theatre) and Kaslo (Langham Cultural Centre) next year and sells her work at Creston Card and Stationery, markets and at Your Arts Desire in Kaslo. Pieces are also available via the Internet (www.eileengidman.com) and her blog can be found from a link on the website. Her advice for artists? “Have a willingness to grab on and don’t be so focused that you think you know what you’ll be doing for the next five years. You need to be ready to veer off when new opportunities present themselves. You’ve got to be uncomfortable sometimes. “As I get a little more mature I’m less concerned about getting into that uncomfortable state. It was much easier to go to work and know what was expected of me, but now it’s only self-driven. That’s a big change.”
