“There was an interest from people who wanted to get together and tie flies,” Karen said. “So we decided to have a group of people together to exchange ideas and exchange knowledge, and to teach anybody who wants to learn. It’s for everybody interested in coming.” Karen noted that with the Granby and Kettle rivers in such close proximity, there’s been a lot of interest in the hobby. “There are also new people coming into town, including people who are recently retired and want something to do,” she added. The Radfords started up Kingfisher Fly and Tackle Shop three years ago upon suggestion from other fly-tying people in the community. “I’ve always had an interest in it but when we moved here there was nothing available,” she explained. “There was a shop but it closed and since we had the space so we opened a small shop.” The fee for each meeting, which takes place at the Station Pub in Grand Forks, is a toonie towards the club, and a toonie in a jar for the waitress at the Station Pub to clean up after, Karen pointed out. Those under 16 years old are not charged. “We’re open to adults and children, and when we get more members we’ll decide what direction we want to go in,” Karen concluded. The club will be meeting the second and fourth Thursday of every month at the upper floor of the Station Pub, from 7 to 9 p.m. For more information, contact Radford at 250-442-3011.

Postcard, bottle catch collectors’ fancy GREG NESTEROFF West Kootenay Advertiser

Another in a series about Kootenay-related collectibles on eBay. An amazing postcard of the Yale-Columbia sawmill at the Boundary ghost town of Cascade (more properly Billings) sold last month for $105.50 US. The card was unmailed but dated March 2, 1911 at Laurier, Wash. and addressed to Miss Rosie Budow of Tonawanda, N.Y. The message read: “Dear Sister, This is a small town right on the boundary line of the US and Canadain [sic]. The three buildings which are along the track are the GN [Great Northern] station in center and US custom office on our side and the Canadain [sic] custom on other. Have considerable snow here. Expect to be here a few days. Hope you are well. Fred.” The sawmill was established around 1903 by the Genelle brothers of the YaleColumbia Lumber Co., which also had mills at Nakusp, Nelson, and Wesley, near Castlegar. Manager J.G. Billings lent his name to the location. By 1910, when it was sold to the Dominion Sawmill and Lumber Co. the mill had a daily capacity of 75,000 board feet and employed about 100 men. It operated until 1924. One other copy of

this postcard sold in 2010 for the buy-itnow price of $42 US. • A clear bottle from the Lion Brewing Co. of Rossland embossed “This bottle not to be sold” nevertheless sold last month for $147 US. The brewery, on 7th Avenue near Monte Christo St., operated from about 1897 until sometime after 1905. Louis Blue was president, J.S. Deschamps secretary, (followed by S.E. Dias) and Ben Moyses manager. In 1898, the company acquired the property of the Yuengling Brewing Co. of Trail, established by industry titan David G.

Yuengling. His son Frederick moved to Rossland to become manager — and was later accused of absconding back to the US with $387 in company funds (well over $8,000 today). He was arrested and the British Consul-General sought his extradition, but according to the New York Times, somehow “managed to get out of that scrape.” Still, he met a bitter end in 1908: after being arrested for passing a bad cheque, he died of chronic alcoholism in the prison ward of Bellevue hospital. The Times wrote that Frederick “in his

palmy days was said to occupy the handsomest apartment in the city,” and was linked romantically to a baroness — but his hard living finally caught up with him. D.G. Yuengling & Son, established in 1828, is now the oldest brewer in America, with headquarters are in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. Three other Lion Brewery bottles have appeared before on eBay. The first, in 2007, failed to meet the reserve price but sold a few months later for $61 US. The others popped up last year and went for $77 and $120 US.

Teck Trail Operations announced last week that it will put its construction of the $210 million No. 4 Furnace Project on hold. The company cited uncertain global economic conditions behind the decision to defer the project indefinitely. The project is on hold not cancelled, said Richard Deane, Teck’s public affairs manager. “Firstly, global market conditions are such that Teck is getting our capital spending in line with our current cash flow,” explained Deane. “And the deferral of the No. 4 Furnace Project is part of a package of projects where spending is either being deferred or slowed down.” Impact on staff is expected to be negligible. “The Teck employees who were dedicated to this project are going to be deployed to other areas of Trail Operations. There is still some continued work required in order to fully prepare the area of the No. 4 project for a restart when we make a decision to restart construction. “The contract work that would have occurred will now be postponed until we make a decision to restart.” The deferral of the furnace project is the only one to affect Trail Operations with other projects in Chile, Alberta and elsewhere in B.C. also impacted. “Teck remains committed to the longterm sustainability of Trail Operations,” said Greg Belland, general manager, Trail Operations, in a press release. “Current production, including end-of-life electronics and lead acid battery

Rabi’a

‘Dancing Myself ’ (steel, glass and ceramic)

Like her “never to be repeated” artworks, Rabi’a is one of a kind. One of eight children born in Holland, she has lived around the world before settling on her Slocan Valley oasis where she cultivates extensive gardens, operates her bed and breakfast (the Artful Lodger, in a literary nod to Dickens) and creates her highly original art pieces. “I’ve explored a lot of different mediums over the years, and continue to incorporate them into works I’m busy with,” she says. “Lately my passion has been mosaics created from all sorts of things – glass, bits of ceramic, stones, mirror shards – that I come across in my forays. I’ll use them all. “With this self portrait, I’ve incorporated my passion for metalwork with mosaics. ‘Dancing Myself ’ is the result of my life-long credo – “Just do it!” – so of course I did.” She laughs as she explains the shared purchase of a welder prompted the current burst of creativity using metal and steel. The ten foot high sculpture is a feast of colour and form. Oversized metal hands and feet flail, bangles festooning the arms, while the mosaic pants encircle a tiny waisted, shirted torso splashed with bits of ceramic and glass. Thanks to the intricate mosaic work the piece is abstract and incredibly detailed at the

Always eager to enhance her artistic passions, Rabi’a’s newfound love of mosaics took her to Barcelona to study the work of the one of the masters of the form, the late Anthony Gaudi. “I learned so much in such a short time. Now, I’m forever on the lookout for materials to work on. Nothing is safe!” she laughingly exclaims. “Kitchen sinks, farm implements, stones and found metal are just some of the materials I’ve done mosaics on, and they are all uniquely beautiful in my opinion.” They are that, though never mollycoddled. Rabi’a dots them throughout her acreage, combining two of her enduring loves. “My gardens are the stage for my art. My sculptural mosaic pieces are happy to be

They show beautifully in the changing natural light of the day, and enhance the natural beauty I’m surrounded by.” Like her art in all its various mediums, Rabi’a is original and creative. Whether roaming scrapyards, studying with the masters or wielding her torches and brushes she’s content, and always engaged to the fullest at any given moment.

Superstar play coming to Nelson STAFF West Kootenay Advertiser

With the Nelson production of Jesus Christ Superstar just under a week away, cast and crew are busy in final rehearsals for the rock opera. The well-known Andrew Lloyd Webber opera first launched in early 1970s and this is the first time it will be brought alive on the Capitol Theatre stage. The six-run show — directed by Kevin Armstrong — opens November 8 and closes November 11. It has a cast of 58 people, an 18-piece band, a dynamic production team, and the

backing of the Amy Ferguson Institute and Nelson Community Opera. Jesus Christ Superstar is a tragedy, with Judas Iscariot arguably the protagonist; Mary Magdalene and Jesus are represented as passionate humans, with great songs like I Don’t Know How to Love Him and Gethsemane. Always in the background and foreground is the public crowd, the whimsical crowd, that follows a fad with adoration, and then condemns former heroes in the blink of an eye. Tickets are available at the Capitol Theatre box office, by phone (250352-6363) or online at www.capi- Arron Nelson in the role of Jesus (middle) during rehearsal for Jesus Christ Supertoltheatre.bc.ca. ffor th the

Week

November N o 2, 2012

Tip of the Week: Scorpio is a sign of mystery and intrigue. Coming to decipher the inner working and complexities of things is a feature of Scorpio’s domain. Ruled by both Mars and Pluto, which are symbolic of taking action or the execution of plans (Mars) and contending with the realities of power (Pluto), which includes our own and the myriad of outer factors that respectively represent ‘outer power’, are core features. The many questions and challenges we regularly face regarding power and the expression of it is an intricate and intrinsic feature of the drama of life. Currently, the actual voting process regarding the U.S. Presidential Election is underway. Given the scope of power and influence the United States exerts over the rest of the world, the outcome is important. The likelihood of a re-election for Barack Obama is indicated in the respective Astrological portraits of himself and Mitt Romney, his enigmatic opponent. It would almost seem that Mr. Romney received the short straw, a debt owed, prompting his decision to run for presidency. This theory points at deeper hidden powers pulling the strings from behind the scenes to ensure a certain outcome. While not a complete illustration of Scorpio, whose totem includes the eagle, the dove and the scorpion, this certainly is reflective of some of the shadowy side of Scorpio’s complex and mysterious nature.

The capacity to see things clearly and to take effective action comes and goes – some days and cycles are simply better than others. The cycles of change indicates rises and falls, like the waxing and waning Moon. It is all good and natural, yet how we tune-in and handle these processes, especially the waning cycles, is important and sometimes we need help, like perhaps now.

The focus on relationships is front and center. Between realizing a clearer sense of your own individuality within the context of relationship and feeling fulfilled regarding needs and desires makes for a complex plot. Ambitious and determined to succeed, you are a force to reckon with. Creating a win/win ever requires creative thinking and diplomatic wisdom.

Deep changes in your overall lifestyle are underway. It is time to undergo some kind of education, training or apprenticeship. This is not a good time to lean on laurels or even past patterns. Stepping back from your situation will help you to decipher the sort of refinements needed in your overall approach towards a healthier daily rhythm.

Somehow you are in for a long haul now. Big changes have occurred, there is no returning to the way it was; you must move on. If only you could feel more confident on all fronts. The key is to accept the complexity of the process. Exercising that much more critical analysis now and a willingness to work that much harder both without and to create peace within, is the call.

Deep within at core reaches of your being fears are being stirred. These are the fears that often arise at the prospect of laying claim to deeper layers of one’s power. Greater effort, courage and responsibility are implied in achieving and holding power. For now, find ways to play with and simply entertain the prospects of accessing hidden reserves of power.

A growing thirst for knowledge, answers, insights and fresh angles of perception and approach is underway. While this includes increasing returns, it is also linked to realizing ideals of achievement and aspects of self-actualization. To succeed, you need to dig deeper than usual. Aim for increased comprehension of complex matters to fortify your overall foundation.

A new day has dawned for you. Now it is time to take inventory of your resources, potentialities and opportunities. Fortunately your energy levels are running high and so too are your powers of discrimination. Yet, you may still feel the need for space or to go somewhere new to support a fresh perspective. Do what you can to step back or away to broaden your scope.

Your ambition and determination levels are rising steadily. You feel strategic and determined to push through any opposition, within or without. Your entire lifestyle has already and is now changing and the pace is quickening. Yet, you also want harmony and may feel conflicted at the prospect that your success is someone else’s defeat. Honest dialogue will help, a lot.

The slow but sure process of disintegration of habitual lifestyle patterns has begun. It is important now that you take stock of the situation. A proactive approach is required. Since we are all creatures of habit, this is a call to review your own and to make initial efforts to replace outworn and/or unhealthy habits with better ones.

Interactions with people holding key positions of power continue. Beyond wanting access to their influence, your deeper desire is to activate your own personal power and/or to position yourself for opportunity. To achieve your goal, however, you may have to go within to confront some of your own fears, limiting beliefs and/or character flaws.

You have received an invitation to lay claim to a new level of power. Have you answered yet? To succeed you must be willing to do the work and there is plenty to do. Yet, if you pace yourself and work with say, a 3 year plan, backed by due diligence, you will be successful. If you feel confused and/or unclear about what to do, seek counsel.

The next stage of a prolonged learning curve has begun and the slope is getting steeper. However it is precisely this challenge that you need. Anything less would not inspire your determination enough. Commitment remains a key word. You must answer the question ‘to what’? Your overall health is certainly implied.
