B.C. Liberals target the NDP and unions at party convention ation efforts and labour agreements with teachers, doctors and other employees, Clark accused the NDP of a list of sins, including a possible moratorium on natural gas development in northern B.C. NDP MLA Shane Simpson has acknowledged the party is considering labour law changes including union certification rules, but no decision has been announced. And NDP leader Adrian Dix has repeatedly

NDP MLA Maurine Karagianis said the B.C. Liberals want to silence unions in political debates, while allowing their “corporate buddies” to spend as much as they want on campaigns. Horgan said the NDP’s election platform will reiterate the party’s position that both business and union donations to political parties should be banned, as they have been for federal parties.

Pressed on his intentions for personal income tax increases in a radio interview last week, Dix said he would consider a small increase for people with annual incomes of $150,000 or more. Clark’s suggestion that the NDP might put a moratorium on hydraulic fracturing to extract natural gas drew a quick response from NDP energy critic John Horgan, who set out the party policy a year ago. “We will be looking at the scientific impacts but we support the process,” Horgan said. “There’s not going to be

3 Facts you need to Know About...

Local Government’s Request for More Provincial Funding 1. The Association of Kootenay-Boundary Local Government recently stated it wants more funding from the Province. The Province would have to raise personal and business taxes to comply with their request or cut spending to healthcare. 2. Between 2000-2010, local government spending, provincially, increased by 13% a year and debt increased by 6% a year, compared to 8% and 4% respectively for the provincial government. 3. Local governments now receive 100% of all traffic fine revenues and three times the unconditional grants received under the NDP. Cranbrook has also received tens of millions of dollars in infrastructure funding for sewage treatment, roads, the regional hospital, the regional college, spirit square & seniors’ housing projects. The Cranbrook PeeWee Tier 2 ICE had a great hockey weekend, beating St Albert and Spokane before losing to Trail 4-1 in the round robin. In a rematch with Trail Sunday morning, the team won 1-0 with the only goal coming in the second period on a two on one with a pass from Justin Garcia to Roc Truman. In to the final the team were against an undefeated Lethbridge team. With Cranbrook up 3-0 Lethbridge notched two power play goals and made it 3-2 then the Ice went up 4-2. Lethbridge notched another power play goal to make it 4-3 but after Easton Jolie scored on the empty net with 45 seconds left in the third, Cranbrook took home the win.

Busy weekend for Bantam AA C.P.C. by Jeff Bromley The Cranbrook Bantam AA C.P.C. (Cranbrook Pest Control) Hornets gained three of a possible four points in South Central Alberta Hockey League action this weekend, earning a 3-3 tie on the road Saturday against the Badlands Longhorns in Brooks, Alberta before boarding the bus and trekking home Sunday afternoon for a 6-2 win over the Innisfail Flyers at the Memorial Arena. The C.P.C. Hornets fought off some early bus-legs Saturday in Brooks as the Longhorns outshot the Hornets 1610 in the first period, only to come up empty as the teams were scoreless after one period. In the second the Hornets opened the scoring when Shawn Kiedyk notched his 4th of the season with Gareth Osmar and Chase Leroux adding the assists. 90 seconds later the Longhorns tied it and then took the lead at the 12-minute mark before Hornet forward James Rota knotted the score at two on a breakaway to send the two teams into the third period deadlocked. The Hornets then got into some serious penalty trouble at the tail-end of the second and into the third period, giving the Longhorns two, 5-on-3 power play opportunities, only to kill them off before giving up a shorthanded goal halfway through the third period.

With the Longhorns up 3-2 the Hornets surrendered yet another 5-on-3 late on the game, which they managed to kill off, only to go down a man yet again with less than two minutes left. With 44 seconds left in the game Osmar notched his second point of the game with his 6th goal of the season, stripping the puck of a Longhorn D-man at their blueline and then scoring on a low wrist-shot, stickside, to salvage the tie. Caden McCormack was stellar in stopping 33 of 36 shots as the Hornets amassed 66 penalty minutes – including three, ten-minute misconducts for not having their mouthguards completely in place and another ten when some displeasure was voiced - to the Longhorns’ 12. On Sunday the North Division’s Innisfail Flyers visited the Memorial Arena and found themselves in trouble early. Four, first period goals by Korbyn Chabot, Rylan D’Etcheverrey, Gareth Osmar and Tyler Van Steinburg gave the Hornets a commanding 4-0 lead after one period. The Flyers got one back in the second but it was as close as they would come as Osmar and Chabot added two more in the third – chasing Flyers starter Lane Brann from the nets in the process – before settling for a 6-2 win. Robert Nickell stopped 22 of 24 shots to earn the win. The C.P.C. Hornets

www.kootenayadvertiser.com A9 improved to 5-4-3 on the season, good for 13 points in the SCAHL’s South Division and second place behind Medicine Hat. The club now enters a break in the SCAHL schedule and will host an exhibition doubleheader Saturday and Sunday against the Spokane Bantam AA Chiefs. Saturday night the Hornets will entertain the Chiefs at the Memorial Arena at 6 p.m. and on Sunday at noon at Western Financial Place.

Beside the ever popular poinsettia, amaryllis are known as “the other Christmas flower”. So why are we talking about this bulb now - merely days after Halloween? There is a rule of thumb - if you want to have your amaryllis in bloom for Christmas, you must remember to plant the bulb by Remembrance Day. There are, however, some new varieties that require less time to reach maturity. With their tall stalk, topped off with an amazing flower, the amaryllis makes an ideal present, not only for a real plant lover, but also all those people on your list that have everything and it is a fantastic hostess gift as well. Every fall, when I see the new amaryllis bulbs coming in, I just have to try the latest one that I don’t already have. The amaryllis bulb is a marvel, because no other plant delivers such spectacular blooms with so little effort. And, let’s face it, sometimes our winters can be a tad long and over-bearing - watching a plant grow daily and produce beautiful blooms can make it just a little more tolerable. Amaryllis are a native of South America where they still grow in the wild in many areas. They have been cultivated since the early 1800’s. Back then, amaryllis bulbs were extremely costly and only available in fire engine red. Today, amaryllis are very reasonably priced and come in many new and exciting colors and bloom varieties. Growers from as far away as Australia, Israel and India keep developing new varieties in many sizes, styles and shapes and colours range from tangerine to pale green. Whatever type of amaryllis bulb you chose, they are extremely easy to grow. Plant the bulbs in late fall or early winter in a pot with the top third of the bulb above the soils surface. Bulbs hate to be soggy, so ensure you use good potting soil with proper drainage and a pot that has good drainage as well. Heavier clay or ceramic pots are preferred over plastic as they offer some weight to plants that can be somewhat top-heavy. Place the plant in a well lit area and water occasionally. Growth can be regulated to some degree by temperature. For example, if your plant is growing too quickly and you want it blooming for Christmas, placing it in a cool spare room or cold room will slow it down. If you want to speed it up, then a warmer room may help your cause. I found that by placing my growing bulb on the top of my warm fridge speeds it up considerably. Amaryllis bloom a long time - after they are finished and the stalk dies back, allow the leaves to grow normally. Once there is no more fear of frost, put the pot outdoors in a semi-shaded area and fertilize monthly with a well balanced water soluble fertilizer. In late September, stop fertilizing and watering. Once the leaves begin to turn yellow and become floppy, cut them back and bring the pot indoors to store it in a cool room. The temperature should not exceed 17ºC. Do not allow it to freeze and do not water it. After about two months, bring it out into a warm, well lit area and begin watering once the new shoots begin to appear. Now your amaryllis should be ready to do its thing for you all over again. So, whether you have a green thumb or not, try growing an amaryllis. Their huge, colourful blooms really are spectacular and from kids to grandparents, people love to watch their daily growth. Even if you plant them after the holidays - sitting by your blooms on a cold and dreary February day may just take the winter blues away. Till next week…happy gardening. Submitted by Shannon

Len Lahoski April 26, 1926-October 14, 2012 Len Lahoski was born at Spy Hill, SK on April 26, 1926. He was the second of four children. Len's family farmed in the Peace River area. He spent his teen years in Vancouver. As a young adult he returned to Saskatchewan where he met and married Steffie Hrbachek. They started raising their family in Kindersley, SK; then Len's job moved them to North Battleford, SK and then onto Fort St. John, BC. When Len and Steffie retired they chose Cranbrook, BC to enjoy the warm weather and golfing. Even though Len developed various health issues, he remained active and enjoyed golfing and travelling up until three years ago. In recent months, his health declined further and he was hospitalized the week before he passed away. Len was devoted to his wife and children. His strong work ethic ensured they were always well looked after. He was predeceased by his oldest daughter Caroline. His memory will be cherished by his wife of 58 years; Steffie, son Larry, daughter Peggy, son-in-law Ray and grandsons Matthew and Sam. In addition he will be missed by numerous relatives and friends. Donations in Len's honour can be made to the East Kootenay Foundation for Health, 13-24th Ave. N., Cranbrook, BC V1C 3H9.
