Earthquake shakes northern coast region By Martina Perry

174 5th Street, Kitimat Hours: Monday and Tuesday from 10am to 4pm.

PRINCE RUPERT - A 7.7 magnitude earthquake rattled the north coast on Saturday evening, with countless aftershocks following. Luckily. no injuries and or substantial damage was done. “We missed the bullet. We’re very, very fortunate. We’re taking it as a good opportunity to practice for something more severe,” Carol Kulesha, mayor of Queen Charlotte City, said. The earthquake occurred at 8:04 p.m. at the epicenter on Oct. 27, 139 kilometres south of Masset. The quake happened 17.5 kilometres below the surface. Although the earthquake happened in the ocean, many felt or noticed signs of it. The quake

was felt as far inland as Chetwynd through the Pine Pass and as far south as Vancouver. Tsunami warnings were issued shortly after for Haida Gwaii and the north coast, as well as parts of central B.C.’s coast, Alaska and Hawaii. Local Emergency Services and the Prince Rupert Port Authority mustered at the Emergency Operations Command Centre at City Hall, where they closely monitored the situation. The Prince Rupert Port Authority’s (PRPA) operations were also evacuated as a precaution. Port Edward residents living near the shore and in low laying areas were notified to move to high grounds. Fortunately, because the earthquake was caused by the earth’s plates sliding hor-

izontally across each other in a strike-slip action instead of the plates sliding vertically, the threat of a large tsunami was not likely. The US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed a 5.8 magnitude aftershock happened ten minutes after the initial quake, with over sixty smaller shocks happening over the next day. The largest aftershock, a 6.3 magnitude, happened at 12:09 p.m. on Oct. 28 159 kilometres southsouthwest of Masset. According to National Resources Canada, the Oct. 27 earthquake was the second largest in Canadian history, behind 1949’s 8.1 magnitude earthquake that also happened offshore of Haida Gwaii. The third largest Canadian earthquake occurred

in 1970, hitting south of Haida Gwaii with a magnitude of 7.4. Although no major damage or tsunami occurred, response times by provincial officials are being heavily criticized. Kelli Kryzanowski, the B.C. manager of strategic initiatives for Emergency Management B.C., told CBC she was pleased with the way local governments and individuals reacted. She said EMBC sent out thousands of phone calls, faxes and e-mails to first responders but was evasive why EMBC’s warning came some 42 minutes after a USGS warning. Any tsunami that would have developed from the Haida Gwaii earthquake would have already enveloped Prince Rupert in those 42 minutes.

Participants linked arms, spanning the length of the Lazelle Ave. mini-mall, and heard from speakers and organizers about why the fight to protect the coast is so crucial, as cars passing by honked their support. “I’m guessing there was closer to 200 at the high point of it,” said Mikael Jenson, the Terrace coordinator. “Young and old community members were present at this event,” he said, noting that the issue is as topical today as when the Enbridge Northern Gateway oil pipeline project was first announced. “The current provincial government has suggested that our environment has a price attached to it, all present

at the rally disagree with this idea,” he said. The gathering was part of the larger Defend our Coast province wide day of action organized by Leadnow.ca and Dogwood Initiative. Rallies were held in front of MLA offices province-wide in order to pressure politicians to commit to banning oil tanker expansion off the coast, a move that organizers say would stop the Enbridge Northern Gateway and Kinder Morgan pipeline projects. The Oct. 24 protests follow the mass sit-in in Victoria on Monday, Oct. 22 that saw 2,000 people rally in front of the provincial legislature. Seventy communities across the province participated.

WEEKLY SUDOKU

KITIMAT - Rallies were held in front of politicians’ offices in Kitimat and Terrace Oct. 24 to protest any expansion of pipelines and tankers. The Defend Our Coast rally brought out nearly 100 people to the City Centre Mall in Kitimat and close to 150 at the Lazelle Ave. mini mall in Terrace to protest Enbridge’s Northern Gateway Pipeline Proposal. The Kitimat event was organized by Lucy Tolhurst-Mcrae and coincided with numerous other Defend Our Coast rallies in the province, which were spunoff from a major rally in Victoria on Oct. 22, which drew close to 4,000 people. “My biggest concern with the whole Northern Gateway project is the tankers,” said Lucy. “This is our place here. I spent most of my teen years down on Douglas Channel with my dad on his boat...and I just can’t imagine coming upon those tankers every single time that you go out on the Channel.” She believes an environmental catastrophe is inevitable if the pipeline were to go through. As people gathered they heard words from speakers such as Douglas Channel Watch’s Murray Minchin and the Haisla’s Gerald Amos. “My real concern...is food security. Security of our grandchildren’s ability to harvest like I’ve done all my life,” Amos told the crowd. “I want to say that every time we gather like this, my hope gets even deeper that we are going to look after the legacy that we leave our children,” he continued. Minchin was back in Kitimat for the rally, hot on the heels of days of questioning at Joint Review Panel hearings in Prince George. “Even if it’s greenlit, it’s going nowhere,” he said. The crowd filled the upper corridors of the City Centre Mall after, passing by MLA Robin Austin’s office, chanting in opposition to the pipeline project. More than 100 people rallied in front of the shared offices of Skeena NDP MLA Robin Austin and Skeena NDP MP Nathan Cullen Oct. 24 in opposition to pipelines and to tanker traffic off B.C.’s coast.

Avalanche claims man’s life The Northern Connector

By Anna Killen

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a man who died as the result of an avalanche near Stewart on Oct. 23, 2012. He was Pat Lawrence Desmarais, aged 50, of Telkwa. What appears to be a routine surveying job turned tragic when an avalanche 65 km north of Stewart claimed the life of Desmarais. He was working in a remote area near Sulphurets Creek as a surveyor for a sub-contractor of Seabridge Gold when the avalanche struck him and another colleague late afternoon on Tuesday, Oct. 23. The avalanche carried Desmarais and swept him off the 300-meter cliff, while the other man was unharmed. This is the first avalanche death of the year. “From my understanding it was surveying type work, in the exploratory stages, taking GPS coordinates,” said Barb McLintock, who speaks for the coroner’s or FAX changes 638-8432.

office. “I think the problem arose in a sense because they were on a really steep slope doing surveillance work ... the problem was the steepness of the slope, so that when this avalanche did hit the unfortunate fellow who died ended up being carried down the slope. “The other guy managed to get out of the way of the avalanche in time to not be carried down the slope,” she said, noting that he was not injured. Avalanche technicians and search crews close to the area assisted in the search and located the victim. Desmarais was then taken by plane to Stewart, she said. “In the end we decided we’re not going to actually send the coroner [physically] in because in fact people from the mine had gone in and moved the body and got it out last night, so there’s really no scene left,” she said. A mines ministry inspector, in charge of health and safety for mining operations, is also involved and has been working with the RCMP, she said.

“This will require a lot of investigation to find out what was going on and whether anybody could reasonably have anticipated this,” said McLintock. “It’s very early for an avalanche death,” she said, noting that last year’s first avalanche death happened in midNovember. “On the other hand,

there’s so much country up there where there are no people, maybe there are a thousand avalanches every October only one never met a human before,” she said. “We don’t really know.” Seabridge Gold issued a statement after the accident had taken place. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of

our colleague, and extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends he leaves behind,” said Seabridge Gold’s chairm and CEO Rudi Fronk. This was a tragic event, and our thoughts and prayers are with them all at this difficult time,” he said. Services were held for Desmarias.

Flop house is searched By Staff Writer

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

NEW AIYNASH - Officers from the LISIMS/Nass Valley RCMP detachment have executed a search warrant on a problem property that has been the source of numerous criminal complaints in New Aiyansh, says detachment commander Sgt. Donovan Tait. The residence, located in the 4600 block of Wright Blvd., was first served with a “Problem Property” notice by the RCMP in March in an effort to curb the rampant illegal activity occurring there, he said. The house is well known as a “flop house” where alcohol and drugs are used to excess, Tait continued. “At that time the RCMP offered the residents information and support that may assist them with changing the behavior at the house. Officers noted evidence of extreme drug and alcohol

consumption in the house,” he said. A quantity of non-prescription drugs were seized and one adult male was arrested and detained on unrelated matters. “In the spirit of crime reduction, we have monitored this residence for quite some time and we are working with the village officials in an effort to effectively deal with the activity,” said Tait. “This residence is a place where our vulnerable youth and those struggling with dependency issues can get access to liquor and drugs. We exercised great discretion in dealing with the resident’s of the house but public safety was now in jeopardy - they left us no choice.” New Aiyansh village government officials attended the scene to provide support to our officers and the offenders, Tait added. He said RCMP is important.

MK Bay Marina has been the focus of much attention at the Regional District of Kitimat Stikine. Kitimat Councillor Corinne Scott has asked that a meeting be arranged between Kitimat’s council and the regional district board to emphasize MK Bay’s importance.

All Proceeds Donated to Kitimat Humane Society

MK Bay discussed

WorkSafeBC ruling which has penalized the marina close to $40,000 due to safety concerns for employees. Reporting back to Kitimat Council from an Oct. 19 RDKS meeting, Scott said that she has requested a service review be done regarding the marina. Meanwhile, Councillor Phil Germuth took advantage of the discussion regarding the marina to move that council write a letter to the RDKS, requesting that the Marina Function Committee be reinstated. The Committee had, at one time, be in charge of the operation of the marina, to take the responsibility away from other communities in the RDKS which had no direct benefit from the marina. Germuth said it only makes sense for the marina to be managed by the people who have the most to gain or lose from it. He had unanimous backing for his motion.

KITIMAT - Corinne Scott, Kitimat Council’s representative on the Regional District of Kitimat Stikine board, has asked that a council-tocouncil meeting be arranged between Kitimat and the regional district to discuss MK Bay Marina. Scott said that with so much recent controversy regarding the marina a face-to-face meeting would be worthwhile for Kitimat to formally emphasize the marina’s importance to the community. The regional district board has been hearing a lot regarding MK Bay Marina over the past several months. Numerous delegations to their meetings from concerned citizens and members of the MK Bay Marina User Group have brought up many concerns, from things such as wash-down policy to the marina’s reaction to a

TERRACE - Wade Stewart, 4, and his brother Calum, 2, won the giant pumpkin at the Terrace Save-on-Foods raffle. People gave a donation of $2 to enter and all the money raised, $375, went to BC Children’s Hospital. This is the first time the store tried to raffle off a giant pumpkin, which likely weighs more than 100 lbs and took three men to lift it, said Darren Davies, manager of Saveon-Foods in Terrace.

Railway safety project underway By Shaun Thomas The Northern connector

PRINCE RUPERT - A major project by CN and the Prince Rupert Port Authority to improve safety at the crossings near the BC Ferries and Alaska Ferry buildings is now well underway. So far the approximately $900,000 project has seen new towers with significantly new lighting erected at the crossings, electronic sensors to control a new electronic crossing bell have been installed, a camera has been put in place and housing for the automated systems is in place. Now the bells will stop ringing

once the train is 15-20 feet past the crossing as opposed to continuing to sound. What’s left to complete, however, is six-foot fencing along the rails from the crossing down to Fairview Terminal and down to the BC Ferries terminal. Dave Fisher with the Prince Rupert Port Authority notes that there are no plans for barb wired or razor wire on the fencing, but that it is designed to drive pedestrians through the crossing area. The material for the fencing was shipped out of Vancouver on Wednesday and will be arriving in Prince Rupert on Saturday, with construction expected to begin on

Monday. CN will still have to put in a walkway up to the bus stop, install more signage and stop lines in front of the railway. “It’s important to the port that we do this and it is important for CN to do this so the public can have safe access to the public,” said Fisher, noting that plans are underway for a public education plan but that no firm strategy is in place as of yet. As part of the work, the parking lot located beside the crossing will be closed as all of the fencing that exists there is being taken out and replaced with new safety fencing.

GATEWAY perspectives

Hearing from all sides By now, you’ve probably heard about last week’s sit-in at the Provincial Legislature in Victoria, calling for a halt to oil tanker traffic along B.C.’s coastline. Everyone has a right to speak their mind, and we respect the opinions of those who have reservations about the Northern Gateway Project. In fact, we encourage the people of British Columbia to express their opinions — because that’s the best way to have an open, honest dialogue, and separate Gateway fact from fiction. In the spirit of honesty, I’d like to share some of my thoughts on last week’s protest. It seems a great many people believe Gateway will introduce oil tanker traffic to B.C.’s coastline for the first time. This is simply not true. Oil tankers have docked at Kitimat for a quarter-century, and refineries have been part of Vancouver’s port communities since the 1930s. In fact the first imports of petroleum to Vancouver date back to 1915. As well, after reviewing Gateway’s marine safety program, an

independent study has declared it as safe with measures that exceed national and international regulatory requirements. I’m from Prince George. Thankfully, we no longer have a one-industry economy here in B.C.’s North, but I’m sure many of us remember those uncertain days in the job market. Establishing the Gateway terminal at Kitimat, and linking Canada’s energy supply to the Pacific Rim, would continue the diversification of our region’s economy. That means job security and prosperity. It means a better future for B.C.’s North.

Plans for Watson Island By Shaun Thomas

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - The company hoping to convert Watson Island in Prince Rupert from a run-down pulp mill to a export terminal says work on the site needs to be done much sooner than later. “If we do not get the mill remediated in the next 12 to 18 months, there will be a spill of some kind that will make remediating the site unrealistic...The cost of remediating the site will cancel out any economic benefit if we don’t work fast,” said Watson Island Development Corporation (WatCo) chief operating officer Tanner Elton, noting that the mill was never properly shut down and a number of tanks are still filled with chemicals. “The clock is ticking. We’re working against time.” The company plans to tear most of the old pulp mill buildings located on the approximately 300 acre island down to the ground, saving some building and structures like warehouses and water treatment tanks for re-purposing, and create a logistics and export facility. The plan calls for light industrial and ancillary uses near the entrance, significant bulk storage on the site, bulk liquid storage for products like Canola oil and improvements to an existing concrete dock that can currently handle two handymax ships at a time. There are also plans for a rail loop around Watson Island to carry the goods. Destruction of the former mill, which was left with equipment like computers, chairs tools and

food still on-site, is expected to take 18 months to complete. But there are challenges. Along with outstanding legal challenges by former owners Sun Wave Forest Products about the ownership of Watson Island, WatCo estimates that the cost to clean up previous contamination to be between $47 million and $200 million. Included in that contamination is 2.3 million cubic metres of hog fuel - wood chips used in the creation of pulp - covering 70 acres of the site, and Elton notes that it would take one train per day for three years to remove. WatCo, has reached a tentative agreement to purchase Watson Island for $5.5 million, with $5 million going to the City of Prince Rupert and $500,000 going to the District of Port Edward. The sale is contingent on the resolution of the pending legal action and the development of a remediation plan. KITIMAT COMMUNITY HUMANE SOCIETY

In the front, Alexx Muller; Middle row, left to right, Ashlee Wojnarowski, Eve Mitchell, Hailey Mitchell, Mikaela Jeffery, Sarah Flach; Back row, left to right, Coach Frank Marrelli, Carly Davies, Alex Butjas, Rochelle Diaz, Anke De Wit, Monica Mann, Kierra Cey, Chelsey Loset and coach Heath Muller.

Demons blank Kings in penalty-filled match up By Submitted

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

KITIMAT- The Kitimat Ice Demons scored three goals in the second period and added two more power play goals in the third to defeat the Terrace River Kings 5 – 0 in a penalty-filled contest on Friday, Oct. 19, at Tamitik Arena. A total of seven Terrace players and two Kitimat players were ejected from the game. Two on each side were sent to the showers for fighting in the third as Terrace goaltender

Patrick Leal scrapped with Kitimat center Nick Markowsky just five minutes into the period. The Demons’ Terry Whelan got into it with Terrace’s Cameron Kerr at the 10:02 mark of the period after a scrum in the Terrace corner. Kerr and Whelan each earned an additional minor, Whelan for head contact with Ryan Holtom in the corner and Kerr got two for instigating. Holtom also got a rare minor for a head butt. By the score sheet,

Terrace had 115 penalty minutes, including the misconducts, and Kitimat earned 55. On the brighter side, a shut-out for Tyson Craven was well deserved as he was seeing the puck all night — although one shot from Steve Cullis got close in, behind Craven, but rebounded off the upright into his pads. Terrace’s Rich Clair was ejected with a misconduct late in the first, mainly from what looked like complaining to referee Steve Bell about a missed butt end

that sent his helmet flying. About eight minutes later, Calen Findlay was next to go, for a more righteous offence — a high head hit five minutes into the second. Kitimat’s main scoring came in the second period as Brandon Wakita scored two rapid fire goals with low hard shots – the first at 7:26 (Derek Wakita) and again at 9:04 (Derek Wakita, Jeff Mildenberger). Wakita was robbed of a natural hat trick when goaltender Leal

dropped on a loose puck in the crease as #15 stabbed at it. Derek Wakita made it 3-0 barely four minutes later, tapping the puck across the line after Leal stopped attempts by Ian Coleman and Jeff Mildenberger, who earned assists. With the solid lead firmly in Kitimat’s hands, the River Kings reverted to the Kings of old for the third period with Mark Dhami getting a game for a check from behind, followed by Corbin Legros, ejected for a cross check to

the head at the same time as Derek Jurista was earning the same punishment for another cross check from behind. The Demons scored twice on goaltender Darren Beaulieau in the ensuing short handed situation — a goal by Ian Coleman (Jon Aiken, Dan Jerrett) and another under a minute later by Jon Aiken (Dave Venman). Total shots in the game were Ice Demons 14-12-15 for a total of 41 and River Kings 1011-4 for a total of 25.

The River Kings had opportunities in the game with a five minute 5-on-3 and a four minute 4-on-3, and had some pretty good shots at Craven but were unable to beat the youngster in just his third game for the Demons. The goal tending of Patrick Leal was very good in the first two periods but Kitimat had pretty good puck control throughout. Leal should likely have refrained for getting into the fight with Markowsky, who was pushed into him.

Rupert Rampage pick up three of four points on the road By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT The Prince Rupert Rampage were on the road again last weekend, and picked up three of a possible four points from division rivals Terrace and Kitimat. On Friday night the team made their way to the Terrace Sportsplex to face off with the River Kings and it was the Kings’ Ryan Holtom

who opened the scoring on the powerplay, getting one by Keano Wilson just over six minutes into the first, followed by six minutes later by a goal from Terrace’s Josh Murray to give the Kings the 2-0 lead. Ninety seconds later, the Rampage’s Kory Movold found the back of the net on the powerplay to pull the Rampage to within one heading into the second. In the second, the period’s

only goal was the tying marker by Justin Fontaine with 7:48 to go in the period. All tied up at two, the third saw Terrace pull away again on a goal by Dawson LeBlond in the first three minutes. But the Rampage fought back, with goals by Josh Kierce and Movold giving the Rampage the lead. And with time winding down and Prince Rupert on the powerplay it looked like

a sure win, but Terrace captain Steve Cullis was able to score the shorthanded goal with just 2:03 to play — forcing a shootout. In the shootout, Movold’s goal in the first round was followed by a goal by Josh Murray in the second round to tie things up. In the third round, Jared Meers put one by netminder Darren Beaulieu while Wilson shut the door on LeBlond to give the

Rampage their first win of the season. The next night the team traveled to Kitimat to face the Ice Demons, and the home squad opened the scoring early on a goal by Nick Markowsky just over two minutes into the period. But the Rampage would take the lead with Josh Kierce scoring five minutes later and Movold beating Thomas Mildenberger just over half way through the first for a 2-1

lead. There would be no scoring in the second, but just over two minutes into the third Josh Slanina beat Wilson to tie things up at two. With no more scoring in the period, the Rampage would head to their second shootout in as many nights. The shootout would follow a similar format to the previous night, with Movold scoring for Prince Rupert in the first round and Slanina scor-

ing for the home team in the second, but this time there was no scoring in the third round which meant it went to sudden death. In the fourth round, Mildenberger stopped Bryan Tates while Steve Venman beat Wilson to give the Demons the two points. The Rampage are off this weekend, and will host their first home game of the season on Nov. 10 against the Demons.
