Acwsalcta students win Aboriginal Traditional Knowledge poster contest PRESS RELEASE FOR FORED BC The annual “For Education about our environment and its natural resources” (FORED BC) Traditional Knowledge and Medicine themed poster contest celebrates the rich cultural and heritage traditions of BC’s aboriginal people. Each year, FORED provides cash prizes to aboriginal youth in primary, intermediate
and secondary grade levels. “But more important than the cash prize, is that youths are learning from their elders about their own traditional knowledge, often used in healing and land stewardship,” says FORED Program Director Cheryl Ziola. “If we don’t make an effort to preserve all that knowledge in some kind of written and artistic form, it may be lost forever.” Hundreds of
entries were received from all across BC, including band schools, as part of FORED’s Aboriginal Heritage, Education & Dialogue (AHEAD) program. A $50 prize was awarded to the following students: Primary Winner: Sekoija Spencer, Falkland Elementary School, Falkland, BC. Intermediate Winner(s) joint entry: Tiffany Pootlass and Lori Saunders, Acwsalcta School, Bella Coola, BC.
Secondary Winner: Preston Squinas, Grassy Plains School, BurnsLake, BC. “We also hope that seeing their talented poster work on our website, promoted in the media, and displayed at the Ministry of Education Office for National Aboriginal Day, will help foster a stayin-school ethic for aboriginal youth, ideally increasing their grade 12 completion rates,” added Ziola. FORED grate-
fully acknowledges the long-term support of the Province of BC, our members & our Foundation sponsors. Corporate sponsorship available. FORED BC Society, est. in 1925, provides sustainability tools, resources & consulting to communities throughout BC, including First Nations. FORED & Landscapes magazine have won seven awards, including three international awards.

Our Dreams Matter Too TAMARA HYND AND CHRISTINA BOUCHER Upwards of 200 local community members are taking action to increase culturally based equity for First Nations children. On June 15, in a walk and day of action organized by Dorothy Pootlass, Touchstone of Hope Coordinator for the Nuxalk Nation Administration, awareness was brought to the Our Dreams Matter Too movement. After the procession through Bella Coola ended at the Qw’asmals building, Dorothy commented, “I got goose bumps all over me when I saw all these kids walking here today. It was very powerful.” Dorothy Pootlass is a recent graduate with a Family & Community Counsellor Diploma. When I spoke with her after the procession, her passion and excitement for this movement was evident and inspiring. I was meeting a strong leader with a healthy vision. To Dorothy, seeing the children walking in the procession filled her heart with hope. Across Canada on the week of June 11, members and supporters of the First Nations
Caring Society of Canada participated in the day of action “Our Dreams Matter Too,” a walk for culturally based equity for First Nations children. Participants have the mission of insuring that First Nations children have an equal chance as all Canadian children to grow up safely at home, get a good education, be healthy, and be proud of their cultures. Participants across Canada as well as in the Valley believe in equity in funding for children's services on reserves, in community-based solutions, and that everyone can make a difference. As part of this movement, support is growing for “Jordan’s Principle.” Here is Jordan’s story, taken from the Caring Society’s website: Jordan Anderson of Norway House Cree Nation was ready to go home from hospital when he was two years old, but he went on to spend over two years unnecessarily in hospital as the Province of Manitoba and the Government of Canada could not agree on who should pay for his at home care. Tragically for Jordan, he passed away at the age of 5

The Our Dreams Matter Too Bella Coola chapter walks the townsite on June 15 never having spent a day in a family home while governments continued to argue. First Nations children are often denied services available to all other children because of
payment and jurisdictional disputes within and between the federal and provincial/territorial governments. As part of the walk, participants will post letters they
have written to Members of Parliament and the Prime Minister on the dreams that matter to them and to their community.
Book Review: Sow Simple (100+ Green and Easy Projects to Make Your Garden Awesome) CHRISTINA BOUCHER I can’t resist crafty books. I don’t actually do a whole lot of crafting, but I do like to read books about it, and imagine the possibilities of what I could do with my old wine corks, fabric scraps, or broken pottery. As gardening is another hobby of mine, this book on home garden crafts caught my attention in the Harbour Publishing catalogue immediately. The authors are a couple from Roberts Creek who somehow have found out how to turn a passion for gardening into a financially lucrative living. Christina Symons is a freelance writer and
photographer specializing in garden, food, and lifestyle topics. John Gillespie is a landscape designer and horticulturalist, master arborist and green roof technician. The book offers ideas for the usual garden tasks (preparing the garden plot in the spring, transplanting perennials, arranging veggie and flower beds, pruning, propagating) with some new “green” twists. In line with ecothemes within the book are suggestions on how to look differently at our gardens and lawns. Instead of spending time and energy (and gasoline) running our mowers over and over green spaces, the authors urge us to form a
whole new perspective. For example, the authors promote the progressive theory of ditching the traditional mown turf lawn for something new. Keep the manicured look, but reduce your clipped lawn to pathways through a wildflower field. Plant a “lawn” of a scented, pretty herb such as camomile, or let your clover and dandelions go wild for a low-maintenance edible herb garden. Additionally, add a rock garden, or a firbark garden (this is actually my tip – fir bark looks really sharp when placed in rows or swirls and survives the Bella Coola weather for years. I’ve gotten more than a few
compliments on my fir bark arrangements!) Speaking of dandelions, the authors offer up just a few of the uses for this so-called “weed.” A cleansing herb tea can be made from the young green leaves, or the leaves can be eaten raw in a salad. The roots of dandelions (if a gardener is patient enough to extract these tap roots, which can get up to ten or more inches long, sometimes annoyingly banking to the side rather than growing straight down!) can be roasted, ground, and brewed into a caffeinefree coffee substitute. As gardening is so much about eating, the book includes some innovative recipes for asparagus
(which grows well in sandy soil here in the Valley), borage and nasturtium blossoms, rhubarb, pumpkins, and apples. One neat thing I learned from this book that I didn’t know
before is how to make a “solar photo.” Solar photos are made with special light-sensitive paper. Basically, you place objects such as leaves on top of the blue side of the paper and leave it all in the
sun for a few hours – the image will “burn” itself in white. For more information about the authors of Sow Simple, visit their blog at everydayeden.com.

To: Central Coast Regional District Box 186 Bella Coola, B.C. V0T1C0 Dear Directors: In the wake of last November’s local election, I was most encouraged to see a number of new residents elected, directors who would bring new energy and ideas to the CCRD. Having successfully worked with David Anderson while he served as Economic Development Officer, I was particularly aware of the excellent skill set he would bring to the director’s chair as our area E representative (the Bella Coola townsite). More than six months have passed since

the November election, and I note with considerable disappointment that director Anderson, with the exception of a very brief attendance (some 8 minutes) at the December inaugural meeting, has been a no-show. In fact, he has missed the last four regularly scheduled monthly meetings. This puts him in clear violation of provincial statute (B.C.’s Community Charter, section 110b). As you may realize, I served six years as a CCRD director without missing a single regularly scheduled meeting. No, I am not asking for a medal! But I do wish to emphasize that serving in public office at any level carries with it an obligation to represent your electors. You do this by attending meetings, putting forth the issues that you know are of concern to those that you represent and, where necessary, building alliances with other area directors to further those concerns. Whether you serve in local government or as a member of band council, respect for that government or council as an institution is a prerequisite to any degree of public service. By his absence, Mr. Anderson has demonstrated a clear lack of accountability to his own electoral area residents. Furthermore, he has shown complete disrespect to his fellow directors who have been taking your public duties seriously by attending those same monthly meetings. Therefore, I request that you declare David Anderson disqualified from service on the CCRD under the provisions of the Community Charter, declare his seat vacant and prepare to hold a by-election. At the very least, this will provide the taxpayers of area E with the representation to which they are entitled. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Kevin O’Neill
Editorial: On the issue of CCRD Director meeting attendance CHRISTINA BOUCHER As a review for readers who may not read the CCRD monthly meeting minutes, here is a quick summary of attendance for regular meetings held to date (there is no January meeting). December: Area A Director Cathi McCullagh; Area B Director Rhonda Bolton (phone) and Alternate Director Reg Moody (in person); Area C Director Brian Lande (Chair); Area D (none present); Area E Director David Anderson was present, but left the meeting after 10 minutes. February: McCullagh, Moody, Lande, Area D Director Ivan Tallio, and Area E Alternate Director Sam Schooner. March: McCullagh, Bolton (phone), and Lande, with no representatives from Areas D or E. April: McCullagh, Moody, Lande, Tallio, and Schooner. In May, no meet-

ing was held due to a lack of quorum. Chair Lande offers some clarification on the May meeting attendance: “Electoral Area B representation did not attend the meeting because it was band council election day for the Heiltsuk Nation, and they had previously informed us they would not be attending. David Anderson phoned into join the meeting to tell us that there would be no meeting.” On June 14, attendees included McCullagh (phone), Area B newly appointed Alternate Director Maria Martin, Lande, Area D Alternate Director Archie Pootlass, and Schooner. The lack of a meeting in May resulted in the failure of a contract for construction design of the proposed Airport Dike upgrade to proceed. One purpose of this project was to determine information for electors to decide whether to undertake the project by referendum. The Municipal Finance Authority, the lender to local governments for such infrastructure projects, only approves financing twice annually. The CCRD cannot meet the deadline for the fall intake, and the next opportunity will be in March of 2013. The earliest that work could proceed is next spring. Regarding the lack of attendance by Directors, Chair Lande comments: “Valley Directors have made the CCRD completely dysfunctional with their lack of interest in the betterment of the community.” Commenting on the topic of Electoral Area E representation, Chair Lande

comments: “Mr. Anderson's actions show a complete lack of professionalism.” Chief Administrative Officer for the CCRD Joy MacKay provides some facts on policies pertaining to missed meetings: “The Community Charter and Local Government Act provide that a director is subject to disqualification for missing four regularly scheduled consecutive meetings. Should a director be subject to this disqualification, an application to court for a declaration that the director be declared disqualified may be made by either their local government (requiring a resolution supported by a two-thirds of all directors), or by 10 or more electors (by way of Petition). “Should such a declaration be made, a by-election would be held in that Electoral Area. A director is not ‘saved’ from disqualification by virtue of his/ her alternate attending in the director’s stead. The principle at issue here is the intention that representation of constituents be by an elected representative, not an appointed individual.” Can CCRD business still get done if Alternate Directors are showing up instead of elected Directors? Yes. The only issue with Alternate Directors doing the work for an elected Director is a philosophical one – it’s not really how democracy is supposed to work. What difference does this make? Well, that’s for the individual to decide. If it matters to you, you can contact your local area director through the CCRD office at info@ccrd-bc. ca. STAFF:

Fire destroys house in Smith Subdivision TAMARA HYND On Wednesday, June 6, 2012 a house fire destroyed a home in the Smith Subdivision. Constable Rod Holland recounted the following events. The RCMP received a call reporting a fire at 21:12 at 2676 Michelle Drive, owned by James and Jennifer Taylor. The
caretaker of the home had started the wood furnace. Luckily she had a persistent canine companion who was very eager to go outside. When the caretaker let the dog out, she saw the top seven feet of the roof of the house was on fire. At the same time, the Hagensborg Fire Department was finishing their weekly

fire practice when they noticed smoke accumulating above Smith subdivision. Four members decided to investigate with the fire truck allowing them to arrive before the RCMP. The house was fully engulfed in flames when the firefighters arrived. The house burned to the ground, but the fire department managed to contain the fire which prevented it from spreading to the adjacent buildings and forest. The firefighters were there for several hours and left a sprinkler system running as it took a considerable
amount of time for the site to cool down. Thankfully, no one was injured. The suspected cause of the fire is an ember or spark from the chimney landing on the cedar shake roof after a wood furnace was started. James and Jennifer had left town for the upcoming birth of their child. They expressed thanks to those who provided assistance during their absence and were relieved no one was injured.

This weekend marks the 27th Annual British Columbia Rodeo Association (BCRA) Bella Coola Rodeo, hosted by the Valley Ridge Riders (VRR). This year’s celebration kicks off with an open gymkhana at 3:00 pm on June 29. Activities continue Friday evening, our traditional family night. This year, the VRR plans to host a way-out-west dinner with some of the finest chili around, and some dancing for the whole family. Awards will be presented to gymkhana winners, and participants can expect lots of opportunities to interact with cowboys, cowgirls, campfires, livestock and music. The refreshment garden will be open afternoon to evening, with an informal, family-friendly atmosphere. The weather
has promised to cooperate, and we look forward to visiting with our friends and neighbours, and to celebrating our community’s volunteer spirit. If it’s live dancing music you crave, don’t fret: Saturday and Sunday nights will feature country-rock band Off the Wahl performing from 9:30 pm until you walk to your campsite or our friends from the Bella Coola Bus Company deliver you to your doorstep in the wee hours. Saturday and Sunday’s actionpacked rodeo performances get underway at 1:00 pm, following the Grand Entry and a heaping plate of Cowboy Breakfast, served from 7 to 10 daily. The 2012 rodeo will feature two one-day rodeos. All the usual events and excitement will abound, but with more contestants and

action, due to the opportunity for competitors to accumulate more season points, hardware, and prize money. This format is expected to bring more contestants from across BC, as the opportunity to “double up” makes the cost of traveling all the way down our Hill that much more inviting. On Monday, the VRR plan to continue celebrating Canada Day long weekend with the traditional Bull-a-Rama, Calcutta-style, starting at 1:00 pm. Barrel racing will be offered between the bullriding sections as the bull-riders prepare to be auctioned off to the crowd, a feature of the Calcutta format. All the auction proceeds go to the pot, which usually exceeds $2000 – and could be yours, should your cowboy prevail! Announcer/auctioneer extraordinaire, Brian Baldry will auction off the bull riders on Monday, as well as call the events throughout the weekend. Stock will once again be supplied by Wild West Entertainment Rodeo. Dale’s outfit comes complete with superior bucking horses, steers, bulls and cowboys – and we hear they all like to dance! The weekend will provide plenty of other opportunities for spectator involvement as well. The now famous Cow Patty Bingo will
be offered daily, along with a Calf Scramble for the kids during the daily intermissions. Hot-buttered corn-on-the-cob, our famous Rodeo Burgers and the King of Beers will all be on hand to enhance the rodeo fans’ experience. We look forward to seeing everyone at the rodeo grounds on Walker Island this weekend, where outstanding community support is what ensures the continued success of this event. The VRR have worked this year to replace a large portion of grandstand seating, and to continue to reclaim the facilities following the effects of the 2010 Flood. We value the large show of support we receive from the community, whether it comes in the form of an event sponsorship, or by pulling a shift at the Main Gate or in the Beer Garden. Watch for posters outlining additional activities for the weekend, and check out the display of prize buckles at Kopas Store. Don’t forget to check out the Facebook Event Page: Bella Coola Rodeo. There are some great pictures posted there! Anyone who would like to offer a helping hand or finalize your sponsorship donation, please contact Caroline (982-2525), Heather (982-2208) or Joy (957-7975). See you at the Rodeo!

Steppin’ Out West dance performers wow audience at BCE TAMARA HYND Steppin’ Out West Dance troupe from Anahim Lake and the Bella Coola Valley held two colourful performances on June 5, in the BCE gymnasium. The variety of dances ranged from ballet, jazz, and taps to acrobatics. The
afternoon performance at BCE was also attended by students from Acwsalcta. The evening performance brought down a packed house of cheering family and friends. This year the dancers have more experience from another year of dedicated prac-
tice and training from instructor Miss Marie Jones. She is a professional dance instructor and Certified Canadian Examiner for the stage. Miss Marie travels from Anahim Lake three weekends a month to instruct dance classes at BCE for local children.
Kirsten Schieck, whose six year old son Jaymen has been taking dance lessons for two years, shared her thoughts. “A dance program is unique for Bella Coola. It’s an absolutely wonderful program offered in a professional manner. Miss Marie is wonderful with the
kids and they respect her very much. It gives them self esteem and there is a huge improvement in the children’s dance skills. They have a lot to be proud of themselves. The quality costumes are beautiful and the children are beginning to perform at a higher level.” Angela and Jim Clair’s two daughters, Kristen, 11, and Kayley, 9 have also trained for two years
with Miss Marie. “It’s fun,” comments Angela. “They get to learn proper dance etiquette, what it means to be a dancer and how to prepare for a performance. It means things like putting their hair back, no (chewing) gum, smiling and proper posture. Miss Marie is very supportive by encouraging practice and reminds them to do their best. It’s good for their overall health
as it’s about fitness, taking turns and working together. Learning the dance steps is good for their memory too.” Dancers and parents took a bus to Anahim Lake on June 10 for their final performance. It was wonderful for the kids to have a third time to perform with the children from Anahim Lake and share between the two communities.

The first ever Turkey Shoot was held on June 10 at the Puntzi Airport Rifle Range. Participating were approximately 28 individuals, with each one competing in an average of 4 events. In attendance were 75 individuals of all ages from Tatla Lake, Chilanko Forks, Redstone Reserve, Anaham Reserve, and Williams Lake. Jan Coates at Woodland Caribou Resort at Puntzi Lake reports that no actual turkeys were shot during the Turkey Shoot event. She explains: “A turkey shoot is usually done in the fall to win your Thanksgiving turkey. The June 10 event was a first run, to see if any families wanted to participate in such an event. What a shock to have so many show up. They cleaned us out of chili at the concession stand, laughed, and encouraged all of the participants in each event. It really was a blast.” Events included Balloon Shots, Standing and Bench Rest Shots, Buddy Shots, Single and Group shots at 25, 50, 100, and 300 metres. The top prize for men’s, women’s and youth’s events won turkeys as well as cash and a trophy. Chilcotin Guns donated several of the prizes. Trophies to high points went to: Lawrence Elkins (men’s), Bev Rondeau (women’s), and Toby Charleyboy (youth). Thanks to the event committee members: Andrea Charleyboy, Dan and Jan Coates, Mary William, Chris Anderberg, and Steve and Jill Horsman. Volunteers that worked on upgrading the site were: Dan Coates, Chris Anderberg, and Rob Jansen. Lumber was donated by Steve Horsman.
The event was sponsored by Puntzi Mountain Community School Association to promote safety with firearms and a healthy family event in the community, and to encourage adults to interact positively with youth and children.
