Dyson wins NDP nomination for Fort-Aldergrove

Shane Dyson won the NDP nomination in Fort Langley-Aldergrove on Sunday afternoon.

Dyson, a longtime Aldergrove resident, won the nomination by defeating Gail Chaddock-Costello, who ran for the party in the riding in the 2009 election. She is also president of Langley Teachers Association.

It was the first contested nomination in memory for members of the NDP constituency association executive, and the contest helped the party double its membership in the riding.

The event began with a speech from party leader Adrian Dix, who has made many appearances in Langley in the past two years.

He repeated his assertion that the party can win seats in the Fraser Valley — including Fort Langley-Aldergrove, and cited the results of the Chilliwack-Hope byelection, where the NDP won a seat it had never won.

“We are not satisfied with writing off 30 to 35 seats any more,” he told the 130 people in attendance.

Dix said the party will continue to press the government on issues, but will not engage in personal attacks.

“We are not going to disrespect people involved in the political process,” he said.

Dix said the party has had far more influence on B.C. than winning three out of 21 elections would indicate.

“The NDP is not about me, nor is it about me sitting in the premier’s office.

It is about a more just, fair and equal society,” he said. “We do it by getting a Shane Dyson mandate for change. We need to take the fight to Rich Coleman, Mary Polak and change the way people of Langley think about the NDP.” After Dix spoke, the two candidates outlined their visions for the province and the riding, and the audience asked questions of them.

Dyson said the NDP has steadily been gaining votes in both Langley ridings provincially, and said the 2011 federal election was particularly successful, with candidate Piotr Majkowski getting more votes than the NDP had ever received in Langley.

He said there must be more effort made to get commuter rail into the Fraser Valley, south of the Fraser. He said water issues are important, particularly in rural Langley, and called for strengthening of the Agricultural Land Reserve and farmworkers’ rights.

“This (Liberal) government is a tired government and well past its best-before date. Let’s move away from the current government’s obsession with lowering taxes. It’s all a shell game anyway.

payments and ferry rates and bridge tolls,” he said.

One questioner asked Dyson and Chaddock-Costello how they would convince people who are disillusioned with the Liberals to vote NDP, and not just stay home.

Dyson replied that the party had a much better record as government in the 1990s than it is given credit for.

“We do need to engage people,” he said. “We will certainly not fall in the trap the Liberals did — say one thing before an election and a few days after the election, start work to bring in the HST.” On Monday, Dyson said he expects a far more vigorous campaign in Fort Langley-Aldergrove than the NDP has run in the past. The party has committed to give Fraser Valley campaigns more resources, and he expects there will be an enthusiastic team of campaign workers.

Dyson said he also plans to learn from recent political examples and make good use of social media to engage potential voters.

Mudslide mess closes 264 Street

Lucas Warkentin said that when he saw the river of mud in his driveway on Wednesday morning, “it took all of two seconds” to realize something was very wrong.

Mud from a landslide on the opposite side of the street from his house in the 7800 block of 264 Street cascaded across the road and down his driveway and into the carport.

Some of it seeped into his house when he answered a knock on the door at 6:30 a.m.

Armed with flashlights, Langley Township firefighters asked him to leave his house.

Warkentin said he had slept through the night’s heavy rain.

Something stirred him at 4:30 a.m., but he went straight back to sleep again until he heard the knock on his door. He thinks that it may have been at 4:30 a.m.

When he looked outside, he was stunned. “It looked like a gravel truck backed into my driveway and dumped a load of mud. Then I thought, who did I

make mad?”

There are more than three feet of mud on his driveway. His car, a Dodge Charger, took the brunt of the slide, Warkentin said.

Fortunately, his house sus-

tained no structural damage.

But an email which he received at 8:30 p.m. from the Township left him “disappointed.”

It stated that he was responsible for cleaning up the mud and the five concrete barriers which were swept down onto his property from the edge of the road.

“That’s my disappointment,” he said. “Other than that, I was fortunate. It could have taken out my house.”

Later on Thursday (Nov. 1), Township engineering manager Ramin Seifi toured the slide site and Warkentin’s property.

Seifi confirmed that once the critical work of the road cleanup has been completed and 264 Street is safe for the public, the Township will remove the concrete barriers from Warkentin’s property, and help as much as possible with clearing the other debris from the private property.

Christmas Bureau doors open for another season Aldergrove Star

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas ... at least in one location in downtown Langley.

The stockings have been hung with care, the tree is decorated and lit, the decorations have been put up and the windows are painted with winter scenes as Langley’s Christmas Bureau opened its doors at the former Coast Capital building at 20550 Fraser Highway on Nov. 1.

The long-standing Christmas charity that makes sure all kids get a visit from Santa began accepting donations of toys, gift certificates and money on Nov. 1. It was also the day they start taking applications from parents who want to make sure their kids enjoy everything about this special holiday.

“We had 200 new families

register last year so the need continues to grow,” said Leigh Castron, Bureau co-ordinator.

Last year, the volunteer-run bureau helped 793 Langley families and 1,800 kids.

There were more Township families registered last year than City residents, said Jim McGregor who has co-chaired at the bureau for a number of years.

Last week, volunteers were busy getting the building ready.

Langley Secondary’s football team did some heavy lifting, bringing in tables and toys.

Murray Piper, a retired Telus employee, was setting up the phone lines. He has volunteered for nine years. Jim Bug also dropped by to talk about updating the website he built for the bureau for free. More than 75 volunteer elves make the bureau

run like a well-oiled North Pole.

Parents looking to register in Aldergrove can do so at the Horse Council of B.C., 27336 Fraser Hwy. That office will be open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There will be three toy days (Dec. 18-20) during which, with help from volunteer elves, parents can come to the bureau and pick out toys for their children.

Each child is also given a new, quality book courtesy of the Wrap-A-Read program put on by Langley Literacy.

A tradition that spans a long length of time, the Gifts Tree will go up at Willowbrook Mall on Nov. 30.

“We had a guy come by with his four-year-old son last year and he said he remembers his parents bringing him to the tree

to donate a gift. That’s why he brought his son,” said McGregor.

“It’s nice to see it had lasting meaning for him.”

The tree has always been hugely popular, said McGregor.

Despite the increase in need, sponsorship of families was down last year, said Castron.

They are hoping that will change this year.

Already 16 people have registered online to sponsor a family.

Each year, the Christmas Bureau matches up sponsors with one or more registered families.

The sponsor then hand-delivers a food hamper and gifts for the children.

Zoo mourns giraffe Aldergrove Star

A 12-year-old male giraffe was found dead in his heated barn Sunday morning by animal care staff during their pre-opening routine.

On November 4 at approximately 7:30 a.m., animal care staff doing their morning routine came upon Jafari, collapsed in his heated barn.

Jafari was a healthy 12 year old male giraffe. He arrived at the Greater Vancouver Zoo in late 2001 at the age of six months from the Granby Zoo. The cause of death is unknown at this time and a necropsy will be performed.

Greater Vancouver Zoo general manager Jody Henderson said, “This is extremely hard on all of us at the zoo, although we take comfort in knowing visitors of the zoo had an opportunity to learn more about this beautiful endangered species.”

Township to host ‘Town Hall’ meeting Aldergrove Star

A joint Town Hall Meeting with Township of Langley Mayor Jack Froese, Langley MP Mark Warawa, and Langley School Board Chair Wendy Johnson will be held Saturday, Nov. 17 from 1 – 3 p.m., at the Aldergrove Kinsmen Centre, 26770 - 29 Ave. The event will give residents a chance to hear from their representatives and ask questions in person or through Twitter. Moderator Frank Bucholtz will be on hand to accept written questions from the audience and submit them to the panel for discussion.

Fire hits Bradner home Aldergrove Star

A West Abbotsford home suffered major damage due to a basement fire on Friday morning.

The blaze was reported to Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service at about 10:30 a.m. Nov. 2 after a helicopter pilot flying over the area noticed smoke coming from the house at 857 Bradner Rd. When crews arrived, light smoke was coming from the top floor of the home, and the lone occupant was standing in the yard.

Deputy Fire Chief Mike Helmer said that due to the large amount of items in the basement, the fire grew and caused major smoke damage to the entire house.

Thirteen trucks and 35 firefighters were on the scene to battle the blaze.

Helmer said damage is estimated at $250,000. The cause is still under investigation.

VICTORIA – Two very different scenes unfolded at opposite ends of the province last week.

In the remote northwest corner of B.C., the first power line towers started going up to connect Highway 37 communities to the BC Hydro grid.

The Nisga’a, Tahltan and other aboriginal communities will soon have reliable power, as well as much-needed training and jobs during clearing and construction.

Meanwhile down on the Gulf Islands, the most hysterical, dishonest campaign against smart meters I’ve heard of so far went into high gear.

I’ve obtained a mass e-mail from the head anti-smart meter organizer on Salt Spring Island that shows the mentality at work here. (Corix is the BC Hydro contractor that has installed more than a million meters and has approached the Gulf Islands with trepidation, the last area of B.C. to be done.)

“Corix is attacking with 30 trucks on Mon the 22nd,” Chris Anderson wrote in October. “Poelpe [sic] are advised NOT to attend the Victoria pipeline rally but instead help defend agianst [sic] spymeter installations in their neighbourhoods.”

Anderson’s self-appointed supporters fanned out across the island, attempting to turn away installers on the false assumption that everyone has

fallen for their crackpot fear campaign. They managed to stop 12 per cent of the installations.

Coincidentally, Anderson has been doing a brisk business selling $35 meter locks to gullible Salt Spring Islanders in recent months. They don’t work, and you’re not allowed to lock BC Hydro property anyway. Others have been sold official-looking “no smart meter” signs that don’t identify the customer, so they don’t work either.

As for the term “spymeter,” I’ve reported on the weird theories spread by Bill Vander Zalm in a video interview, where he claims smart meters are part of a global surveillance system that can even tell what you’re cooking. Vander Zalm has been outdone by one Brian Thiesen, who styles himself as the “chairman” of “Interior Smart Meter Awareness.”

In September, the Merritt Herald reported on Theisen’s presentation to 20 unwary people in a church basement.

He claimed wireless meters not only provide video surveillance of your house, they are also responsible for “dying bees” and “defective sperm and eggs” as well as disease and fires.

Thiesen even claimed radio frequency signals can “pull your PIN number directly out of your head.” Is there no limit to the nonsense some people will fall for?

Surrey Fire Chief Len Garis co-authored a study that shows residential fires have decreased with the advent of smart meters. Which brings me to the ugliest opposition to this modernization, the criminal element.

Here in North America’s marijuana mecca, installers have encountered many meter bypasses, wired up to steal hydro and conceal high consumption for grow ops.

In addition to being illegal, they are a fire hazard that is removed when discovered.

Installers also find more sophisticated cases of hydro theft. Removing the mechanical meter reveals a hole cut in the back of the case, so the dials can be turned back to hide a grow op’s power consumption. No wonder some people want to lock them down.

Of course all of this is defeated by a smart grid system, so the growers and other crooks are angry.

A BC Hydro official told me about one case where a user was told he had a bypass, and that it was being removed.

His bill went from next to nothing to a reasonable level.

The customer complained to the media, falsely inflating the amount of his bill and blaming an inaccurate smart meter.

This Sunday is Remembrance Day. It is an important time to mark the sacrifices of soldiers in many past wars, who have made Canada what it is today. In Langley, there will be many opportunities to mark the day. There will be services at the cenotaphs in Langley City, Fort Langley, and the Aldergrove Legion.

All of these events will be focused primarily on the sacrifices made by the diminishing group of Second World War and Korean War veterans. They are the backbone of the veterans’ community locally, and their efforts from 1939-1945 and 1950-53 were very significant.

Remembering takes on new importance as their ranks diminish due to aging. It’s good that many younger people in Langley have taken this to heart in recent years, as attendance at Remembrance Day events has grown significantly.

On Sunday afternoon, a significant event takes place that focuses almost exclusively on the most recent sacrifice by Canadian veterans — in Afghanistan. The effort by Canadian troops in Afghanistan has been a lengthy one and the exact result of all their work remains unclear.

What is very clear though, is that 158 of them lost their lives there, and Langley young people Elizabeth and Michael Pratt are determined that they also are remembered. The Walk to Remember area of the Derek Doubleday Arboretum is a living memorial to these young soldiers, and a formal ceremony, which includes a dedication of a new structure which lists the names of the fallen.

It’s a reminder that those who died in war were young and missed much of their lives. They defended an ideal.

The important role played by the military in preserving our way of life is often not well understood, but on many occasions, young people have risen to the call to serve. Some of them made the ultimate sacrifice, and it is our duty to remember them.

It is the least that we can do.

NDP are on a roll here The Fort Langley-Aldergrove NDP nominating meeting Sunday was a far cry from most NDP events held in Langley over the years.

About 130 people were present; 97 were eligible to cast ballots and there was a genuine race for the nomination.

The eventual winner, Shane Dyson, is well-known in both NDP and Langley circles and has even run in the riding before, taking on incumbent Rich Coleman in 2005. The other candidate was Gail Chaddock-Costello, the current president of Langley Teachers Association, who ran against Coleman in 2009.

The fact that there was a competition for the nomination, for the first time in the memory of NDP executive members, boosted party membership in the riding substantially. This ties in with efforts that party leader Adrian Dix has made to raise awareness that seats in the Fraser Valley can be won by the party if it is willing to put the money and effort into doing so.

Dix spoke to the meeting and again emphasized the winnability of seats in the Fraser Valley. While the NDP has frequently won seats north of the Fraser River, its efforts south of the Fraser and east of Surrey have been for naught — until the byelection win in Chilliwack-Hope this spring. Dix is hoping to build on that momentum in the general election in May. Dyson is very familiar with local issues and spoke to a number of them in his speech — specifically a light rail system south of the Fraser; transportation planning; improving the ability of farmers to make a living and market their products.

I spoke with a number of party members at the event and was impressed by their enthusiasm. They know that taking on Coleman in a general election is a formidable task, but are more enthused about doing so than ever.

There is no doubt that the NDP tide is rising in B.C. Polls show that the party is likely to form government. While the BC Liberals are almost certain to rise in the polls by election day, Premier Christy Clark will have a tough time holding on to power.

Dix has been helped by his refusal to go negative. This strikes a chord with a lot of voters who are tired of intense partisanship and personal politics.

I believe this is one factor in the NDP’s high standing with female voters. Clark is having a tough time connecting with a lot of women.

While the Liberals have to be the favourites in the two Langley ridings, and particularly in Fort Langley-Aldergrove, the NDP will be putting up a much more polished campaign.

Intersections need improvements Drivers

Editor: Re: “Township to take second look at ‘scary’ intersection,” (The Times, Oct. 25).

Your story about the 256 Street and Robertson Crescent intersection and council’s belated plan to install an overhead flashing light makes me wonder about our decision-makers in Langley. It’s another example of closing the barn door after the horse has escaped.

I’ve lived in the neighbourhood for over 35 years and have witnessed many drivers fail to stop at this intersection, so much so that my family usually slows to a crawl when crossing Robertson.

I, however, don’t believe that the intersection is at fault. The stop signs are large, reflective and always clean, the post has a red reflector, the road has a white stop line, the centre line is double and always freshly painted, and you can see the eastbound stop sign from 248 Street, with good eyesight.

I believe that most drivers who fail to stop are distracted or deliberately don’t stop, often assuming that no one was coming the other way.

The Township, TransLink and the B.C. government are all responsible for various roads in Langley, and none of them seems to know how to mark the roads. There are very specific guidelines for lane marking and signage so that drivers are aware of lurking hazards and when it’s safe.

Too many roads and intersections are in desperate need of correction. Signage needs to be visible from a reasonable distance, while centre lines need to be double, single, dotted, or a combination of a single solid and dotted line.

It only takes half an hour to drive around rural Langley to find a dotted line going right through an intersection (264 Street at 36 Avenue), or a dotted line leading up to an intersection and starting again immediately on the other side, or a single line where a double line should be, or a double solid where there should be a single solid going one way with a dotted going the other way.

Recent changes by the Township to replace dotted centre lines with solid lines on straight, safe stretches of rural road will in fact lead to increased crashes. Drivers won’t be able to identify approaching hazards because everything looks the same. It follows that many will also try to pass when it’s not safe.

An intersection needs to look like an intersection. If that means an overhead flashing light, fine, but let’s make sure the basics are in order first. Many intersections are completely invisible until you’re in the middle of it. Double yellow centre lines, stop signs, stop lines, a dedicated mower for intersections and police enforcement are all important.

There also needs to be a review of which intersections need two-way stops, four-way stops, overhead warning lights or traffic lights. This is long past due.

Even moving the two-way stop signs to the road with less traffic would help, since fewer cars means fewer cars going through stop signs.

And finally, a word of advice: stop means stop. I bet many drivers don’t even cast a quick glance to either side before entering an intersection. That means they’re partly

at fault, even if the other driver missed the stop sign.

My heart goes out to all those touched by last year’s tragic collision. Let’s fix Langley’s roads before somebody else dies.

Ross MacIntosh, Aldergrove ***** Editor: Regarding the intersection of Robertson Crescent and 256 Street, all that is needed is to change it to a four-way stop. The only scary thing about the intersection is whether or not someone is going to run the stop sign on Roberton Crescent.

I live not far from the intersection and it isn’t any more dangerous than 20 other intersections in the Township. I have seen a driver approach the stop sign westbound on Robertson Crescent, almost stop and look north, start moving through the intersection and then look south. That is when he saw my truck.

By the time he stopped, his car was across the centre line of 256 Street. Fortunately, I had just enough room to swerve around the nose of his car, avoiding him and the ditch.

A flashing red light wouldn’t have stopped him from doing what he did. He knew there was a stop sign, but his bad driving habits just about ruined his day.

A red flashing light would not make a difference to that person’s disregard for traffic safety.

The stop signs on Robertson Crescent are highly visible. They are not obscured by any bushes or branches and the visibility from the stop lines both north and south is good.

Editor: My home on 264 Street was the one in the path of the recent mudslide. My car was buried in mud, and my home was hit by the slide and damaged, with mud even washing over the roof in spots.

Several 600 lb. concrete abutments from 264 Street were flung onto my property along with all the debris.

Editor: Another accident on 56 Avenue and 264 Street the other day.

This road in Gloucester Industrial Estates is being used as a second highway.

Big rigs are parked on the median in middle of road for drivers to get their coffees at Tim Hortons, making visibility hard, and worse in bad weather.

Pulling out onto the fourlane junction is like playing Russian roulette because the car far away may be driving 100 kph instead of the posted speed.

The traffic in this area is very high during work hours. There is not anything to slow the drivers down in this industrial area.

I do not know why they made this road four lanes if there is nothing to control the speed.

If the police were to stake out this area for a week they would realize the congestion at Tim Hortons. The speeding drivers.

The illegal parking of big trucks on road and middle median. The crazy drivers tailgating and weaving in and out of traffic. The cellphone talkers.

This road is a tragedy waiting to happen. And everyone I work with knows it, because they drive it every morning and night too.

Letter to the Editor I am a member of the War Amps Operation Legacy, which consists of young members and graduates of the Child Amputee (CHAMP) program who are dedicated to preserving and commemorating Canada’s military heritage by teaching younger generations about our nation’s wartime history.

I have had the privilege to learn about Canada’s military heritage and also know what it is like to live without a limb – a strong bond that I share with war amputee veterans. CHAMP was started by war amputee veterans and I want to give back to those who have given me so much.

It’s important to remember our veterans for countless reasons.

The individuals that left their families, homes and lives behind to fight for us and our country deserve more than just remembrance.

Wage levels vary with age and skills Aldergrove Star

Wage levels in B.C. are very dependent on the age and skill level of the workers.

The graph on this page makes the point.

Workers aged 15 to 24, many of whom are relatively new to the workplace, make an average of $13.80 per hour. Those aged 25-54 make an average hourly wage of $25.32, while those 55 and over make slightly more, an average of $25.92.

The wage levels reflect the fact that many people 25 and over have found a job that pays high enough wages to allow them to live an independent life, including owning or renting a home, owning a vehicle and establishing a family.

Within Langley, it has long been a goal of Langley Township to have enough jobs within the Township to match the working population. This figure has been gradually on the rise, with large-scale industrial developments in places like Gloucester Industrial Estates adding significantly to the jobs total within Langley.

Additional commercial developments within both the City and Township are also adding jobs. The development of a luxury auto brand mall in Langley City has added good-paying jobs within Langley, and construction activity here is a major job creator.

Across B.C., many good-paying jobs are being created in the resources industry. Some of these jobs can’t find enough applicants, as has been widely-publicized with a northern coal mine that wishes to undergo some test mining.

Young people wishing to make good wages in the future have options of a wide variety of skills training programs. Some take place within specific industries in the form of apprenticeships, but most involve post-secondary training at institutions like Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

The Aldergrove Kodiaks returned to their winning ways on Saturday night at Sungod Arena, with a 3-2 win over North Delta Devils.

It was a good night for Kodiaks’ Ryan Veillet, who opened the scoring in the second period after a scoreless first. Veillet’s goal at 34 seconds into the second period would be the only goal that period too. Veillet’s assist came from Spencer McHaffie and Stefan Gonzales.

The Devils evened the game up at 1:01 in the third on a power play, but 38 seconds later Veillet scored again, this time assisted by the twins Scott and Spencer McHaffie.

The Devils evened it up again at 6:53 but Gonzales scored the winner on a power play in the last minute of the game, assisted by Kenny Prato and Stephen Ryan.

Gonzales and Kodiaks’ keeper Mark Menicucci earned the game’s first and second stars, respectively. Shots on goal were 31-26 in favor of the Devils, with goalie Steve Myland earning third star that night.

KODIAKS PUT FRIGHT INTO WOLF PACK The Kodiaks blanked the visiting North Vancouver Wolf Pack 6-0 in the first two periods on Halloween night at Aldergrove Arena, until a third period rally by the Pack brought the final score to 6-3 for the Kodiaks.

The Pack outshot the Kodiaks 19-6 in the third for a game total of 43-37 in their favor but they couldn’t score on any of six power plays, while the Kodiaks scored on two of five.

The twin brother team of Spencer and Scott McHaffie earned first and second stars for their outstanding work in the first period, scoring and assisting on the first three goals of four in the first period.

Aldergrove’s Ron Dietterle has been hired by the American Hockey League as a linesman and his next game is on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre when the Abbotsford Heat hosts the Lake Erie Monsters.

Dietterle was an Aldergrove Minor Hockey player and referee since his youth. He has gone on to referee Junior and Western hockey league games and now is working in the highest level of hockey in North America.

Totems soccer boys head to B.C. championships Aldergrove Star

Aldergrove Community Secondary School’s senior boys soccer team have qualified for the 2012 B.C. High School AA Championships in Burnaby this November 21-23.

The Aldergrove Totems posted six wins, one loss and one tie during league play this season in the Langley division, to top their group.

As a result they qualified for the Fraser Valley playoffs which started last week by hosting Samuel Robertson Technical school from Maple Ridge on Tuesday, Oct. 30.

After going down a goal in the first half Aldergrove slowly took control of the game and eventually tied it up with 20 minutes to play. Then owning SRT in the overtime and capitalizing on some nice passing Aldergrove scored the go ahead goal in the second half of overtime for the win. This win put the Aldergrove team into the semi-final against the number one seed in the valley, Delview Secondary.

On Thursday, Nov. 1 the Totems traveled to Delta to take on the Delview squad and the teams looked up to the task, providing some top quality soccer for the fans to watch. After the Totems lost two players to injuries the Delview side started to take control of the match
