By Jennifer Lang It’s a big job and somebody’s got to do it. Each year, the Cloverdale Christmas Hamper Program spreads the spirit of the season to hundreds of needy local families and individuals who would otherwise go without. It takes a combined effort of many local churches, elementary and secondary schools, businesses and service clubs, plus an army of volunteers to make it happen. It begins after Halloween, when donation boxes are distributed across Cloverdale. Later, they’re collected as they fill up with donations of non-perishable food items from the community. The 2011 campaign brought in more than $50,000 in food and cash donations. Playing a vital role was a team from the Surrey Society for Community Living, who helped deliver and pick up all the boxes from schools and business, and are looking forward to doing it all again this year. “Dropping them off wasn’t a problem for our guys,” says community support worker Sean Rougeau. “We have a good team and they did a good job. The hardest part is picking up.” In the spirit of friendly competition, two schools – Clayton Heights Secondary and Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary – decided to see which could collect the most food. “I believe both of them had over 15,000 items,” said Rougeau. “That was basically, 50
boxes plus. They were absolutely packed to the point that it took three of us just to lift them.” Fortunately, the schools immediately offered up ruby players and other assistance. This year, they’re asking that schools put donations inside smaller plastic bags with handles, so they can be carried out more easily on collection day. The hampers are put together at the nerve centre, a large warehouse at Pacific Community Church in Cloverdale, where an assembly line is put into action each December. Each includes non-perishable food and sundry items, vegetables, a turkey or ham, dairy products as well as toys or gift cards for children and youths, along with a grocery gift card for each family or individual to help carry them through the Christmas season. Last week, the team from Community Living was taking apart damaged donation boxes, stripping off the wrapping paper and tape, and stacking them in a pile for reassembly, making quick work of the job. “I think it’s really cool that we do this for the other kids,” said Christel, one of the team members. Rougeau smiled. “It’s a tremendous thing to see our individuals – I mean, sometimes, society casts them in a certain light – to see them helping individuals who are less fortunate than themselves, is so heartening,” he said. “To see them being totally contributing members to society in a way I’m sure a lot of people don’t see.”

Larson passed away Oct. 27 in Surrey Memorial Hospital due to complications from colon cancer. He was 90. His military career included serving with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in Korea, where his regiment was instrumental in defending Seoul and the Kapyong Valley, earn-
ing both the United States Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary heroism in action and the Republic of Korea’s Presidential Unit Citation. A soldier to the end, he was presented with these citations in hospital before he died. Born in Woodnorth, Manitoba on Jan. 29, 1922, Larson enlisted in the Canadian Provost Corps. during the Second World War, serving in England, Belgium, Germany, and France, where

By Jennifer Lang Bill Larson, a celebrated Cloverdale veteran and tireless campaigner for the Legion’s Poppy Fund, has passed away. Friends and family gathered on Saturday, Nov. 3, for his memorial service. Larson, who served in both the Second World War and the Korean War, came to symbolize the sacrifice of Canadian veterans when his image was immortalized in a mural painted next to the Surrey Cenotaph in 2005. “Lest We Forget”was painted by Sullivan Heights and North Surrey Secondary students to commemorate land, sea

Cinema to raise cash for digital upgrade

Live concert to feature some of Surrey’s brightest musical stars By Jennifer Lang It looks like Martha and Ethel might be forced into retirement after all. The Clova Cinema is hoping to make the switch to a digital projection system, following the industry-wide trend. In less than a year, 35-mm film will be phased out for good. And that means the Clova’s two trusty, if temperamental, film projectors (named to help keep them straight during various breakdowns and repairs) will have to be replaced after 65 years of service at Cloverdale’s famed single-screen movie house. But first, the cinema is looking for ways to iraise some money in order to pay for the switch, an expensive prospect for the cinema, which has been owned by Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary grad Craig Burghardt for the past 16 years. But instead of raising the already low ticket prices (the $8 adult admission is for a double bill) or jacking up the cost of popcorn ($2.50 if you bring your own bowl), the Clova is putting together a familyfriendly all-ages gig Nov. 16 featuring bands, solo artists plus a silent auction. They’re calling it the Road to Digital. “We are planning a very entertaining night for you,” Burghardt promises. The cinema has assembled a talented lineup of local performers, including headliners and indie darlings The Oh Wells, who went from performing at their school’s Terry Fox Run to White Rock coffee shops to Vancouver’s club circuit. Now they’re CiTR Shindig winners, EMP Soundoff finalists, and are in the Peak Performance Project Top 20. Brother act duo Sam Reseigh and his stepbrother Steve – formerly of the groups Conspiracy and Stella – will be performing pop covers and fun songs people can dance to. Soulful singer/songwriter and guitarist Vanessa Bonita Dolezal sings in both Spanish and English, and cites such diverse influences

digital-only movie releases, meaning any theatre that doesn’t invest tens of thousands to install a digital projection system will no longer have access to new movies. “If we don’t convert over to digital projectors soon, then unfortunately, we would have to shut our doors,” says Samantha LeDrew, a long-time member of the “Clovamily.” The Clova is also soliciting items for a silent
auction planned as part of the concert. “We have a few items for our silent auction and a few door prizes,” LeDrew says, “but if any [supporters] are able to donate, we are always looking for more.” The Clova Cinema at 5732 176 Street quietly celebrated its 65th birthday this past May. It was built because the business community agreed a movie house was an important local amenity. Cloverdale residents snapped up $1,000 bonds to pay for construction. The bonds were repaid within two years. Proceeds of opening night, May 26, 1947 – a gala event covered by the press and involving dignitaries – were donated to Surrey Memorial Hospital Fund. Right from the beginning, LeDrew says, up to today, the Clova has made supporting the community that supports the cinema a key operational mandate. “We don’t just use our space for our business, we allow other groups to do fundraising, birthday parties, we’ve hosted four weddings, and we’ve had a huge gala before,” she says. Remembrance tributes will ring hollow to some On Sunday many of us will gather around cenotaphs and in city squares for solemn ceremonies paying tribute to Canada’s service men and women. We’ll hear words like sacrifice and honour, some of them uttered by politicians. But for some veterans they’ll ring hollow. In 2006, Parliament unanimously passed the New Veterans Charter that changed the way injured soldiers are compensated. Instead of a lifetime pension, indexed to inflation, veterans injured after that year, or who had their injury diagnosed since then, would get a lump sump settlement. Veterans Affairs champions the new system as “a more complete approach to helping our men and women injured in the line of duty,” offering them “real hope.” But some injured veterans, like Kevin Berry, say otherwise. They say Canadian soldiers injured in Afghanistan, and those suffering the lingering mental and emotional effects of their tour are getting substantially less support
from the old Pension Act. Recently Canada’s AuditorGeneral criticized the Canadian Forces and Veterans Affairs for their shoddy treatment of injured veterans, saying the system to get them help is “complex, lengthy and challenging to navigate.”

More casino details emerge
A casino and hotel, an 800-seat theatre and a massive convention centre are the key features of a casino proposed for South Surrey, proponents revealed at a preview last week in Langley. Gateway Casinos and Entertainment’s plans show a landscaped complex that includes a 60,000-square foot gaming floor, 200-room hotel, plus a convention and entertainment zone – featuring the largest live venue of its kind in Surrey – along with four restaurants and three lounges. If approved by the City of Surrey, the $100 million project, to be located across 18 acres on a parcel at 10 Avenue and 168 Street, could open 18 months after breaking ground, said Tanya Gabara, community liaison for Gateway Casinos, who was joined at the event by the company’s general counsel, James Chen. The public’s first chance to view and comment on renderings and details of the plan was slated for yesterday (Nov. 7, after the Reporter’s deadline), at the Hazelmere Golf and Tennis Club. By Jennifer Lang As political moves go, it’s not exactly earth-shattering, but it’s a big step for cabinet minister Stephanie Cadieux, who announced last week she will run for the B.C. Liberals in Surrey-Cloverdale come election day. Cadieux made the announcement alongside incumbent Surrey-White Rock MLA Gordon Hogg and former Liberal MP Sukh Dhaliwal, who has decided to run provincially in her current riding of Surrey-Panorama. The nomination in Cloverdale opened up when MLA Kevin Falcon – who was also at the Oct. 31 announcement at Sunrise Banquet and Conference Centre in Cloverdale, decided not to run again, prompting Cadieux, a Cloverdale resident, to consider running in her home riding. “After some thinking, and speaking with family, close friends and some supporters in Cloverdale,
I decided the best move for me would be to seek the nomination in Cloverdale,” she said, adding she is excited about the move. “I did have to think about it,” she told the Reporter, adding she’d always felt very welcomed in Panorama. “But I want to be able to represent the area that I live in. That is important to me, personally.” Cadieux has represented Surrey-Panorama since 2009. While relatively new to politics, she’s held a number of cabinet positions and is currently minister for Children and Family Development. While praising Falcon’s legacy in the riding, Cadieux said she’ll put her own stamp on her role. “I’m going to take a different look at Cloverdale as a new candidate,” she said, adding that she’ll be reaching out to businesses and residents in the next couple of months. The parade and colour party will set out from Royal Canadian Legion Branch 6 to Surrey Museum Plaza, where they’ll be joined by members of the Surrey RCMP, 746 Lightning Hawk Air Cadet Squadron, Seaforth Highlanders Army Cadets, emergency services personnel, local guides, scouts, Sparks and Cubs. Ceremonies begin at 10:15 a.m. They’re held at Surrey’s World War I cenotaph in Heritage Square, beside the Surrey Archives at 17671 56A Avenue. The service will also feature the RCMP’s E Divi-

Surrey Museum and Archives open their doors on Remembrance Day By Jennifer Lang Surrey residents are invited to bring their families to the Remembrance Day service at the Cenotaph at Surrey Museum Plaza, then come in from the cold to the museum or archives after the ceremony is over. The Surrey Museum and Surrey Archives will be open on Sunday, Nov. 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for the annual Surrey Remembers event. The Surrey Museum will have warm refreshments, films, peaceful crafts for kids such as tissue paper poppies and thankful tree artwork to commemorate the day. Write thank you notes on post cards that will be delivered to Lower Mainland veter-
ans and their families. View Second World War documentary videos in the museum’s theatre, take in Remembrance Day projects from a Grade 2 class from Cloverdale Traditional School, or watch demonstrations of weaving and spinning in the textile studio. See the heritage loom used to rehabilitate veterans and try your hand at weaving. The Cloverdale Royal Canadian Legion Branch 6 is also setting up a display in the museum on Remembrance Day. From noon to 1 p.m., join author Robert Mackay in the theatre for Soldier of the Horse, and learn about Surrey’s connec-
tions to the Canadian cavalry in World War One, and the importance of horses during the war. The lecture is by donation and is suitable for all ages. Across the plaza at the Surrey Archives, warm up with refreshments downstairs, then come up to the reference room to see wartime newspapers, documents, photographs, a slideshow on Surrey’s participation in the world wars, and listen to the veterans oral history collection. The Poppy Fund works all year to provide support services and prorams for veterans and their families. With a new generation of veterans coming home, the fund is needed more than ever. Veterans turn to
the Legion for affordable housing, education, and trauma repair, relief and recovery. The fund is also used for disaster relief when declared by governments. The poppy has stood as a symbol of remembrance since 1921. They should be worn on the left breast, over the heart. Use a Canadian flag pin to keep the poppy in place, instead of the L-shaped pin.

Animal neglect and cruelty is heartbreaking to witness at any time of year, but as temperatures drop and winter’s wrath draws near, it is particularly distressing for SPCA constables to find so many animals left outdoors in freezing temperatures, with little or no protection from the elements. While the SPCA responds to countless cases where animals are in serious distress after being deliberately neglected outdoors, even well-loved family pets can become sick or injured in harsh weather.
Ice can also cut your dog’s paws — watch your dog closely for signs he may be injured during exercise, and check for cuts and sores after exercise.
Here are some simple tips to keep your pet healthy and happy this winter:
The BC SPCA is strongly opposed to keeping pets outside, particularly in cold temperatures. If you must leave your animal outside for short periods, ensure that he or she has an appropriate shelter that is elevated off the ground and insulated. It should also be regularly cleaned and cleared of any environmental debris. The outdoor shelter should also be appropriate to the weight and coat of the animal; he or she must be able to sit, stand, lie down and turn around freely and easily. Your dog must also have access to potable water at all times so check regularly to ensure that the water in the dish is not frozen.
Antifreeze can be a deadly winter hazard for pets, who find the taste appealing. Ethylene glycol antifreeze is extremely toxic to pets and wildlife — a mere tablespoon is enough to kill a cat or small dog. Ensure you are using pet-safe, propylene-based antifreeze, which you will find at automotive supply stores if you’re adding it yourself, or you can ask your mechanic for it if you’re having your vehicle professionally winterized. Road salt is toxic if ingested and can also irritate
dogs’ paws. When outside with your dog, pay special attention to where he’s walking and ensure you wipe his paws thoroughly after walks and play to remove any salt. (The SPCA recommends using petfriendly, non-corrosive de-icing compounds.)

He ‘embodied’ Legion values From page one
he was wounded. After the war, he moved to Surrey, working for Fraser Mills. But military life called, and he soon enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, then later the Canadian Provost Corps again, and by 1950, he was part of the PPCLI. He left the armed forces in 1959, embarking on a long civilian career with Canada Post. Music was a great joy of his life. He played both the trumpet and saxophone, performing with a number of bands. He was also physically active: he loved baseball, and played senior slow-pitch up to age 74. He enjoyed writing, published a memoir of his army adventures and also wrote poetry. An active force in the community, Larson was also involved in a number of groups, including the Chamber of Commerce, the Canadian Order of Foresters, Scouts Canada, the junior Olympic training program and the RCMP Auxiliary. He also founded the Cloverdale Jazz Club. He’ll be greatly missed at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 6 in Cloverdale, where he was a longserving and active member. He was awarded a life membership in 1985.
“He gave it his all, to his community and to his country.” - Frank Redekop, Branch 6 A past-president of Branch 6, he was also especially dedicated to the Poppy Campaign, which raises funds through poppy sales to support veterans and their families. During the two-week annual campaign, “He just basically went out eight to 10 hours a day,” Branch 6 president Frank Redekop recalled Tuesday. “He was out there all day, every day. He never sat down.” In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that any donations be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund. Larson was a fixture at Remembrance Day services in Cloverdale, where he played the Last Post on his trumpet at numerous ceremonies. His dedication and service represents what the Legion is all about, Redekop said. “He just embodied the principles that the Legion stands for. He is definitely a man who will be missed,” Redekop said, praising Larson’s honesty and integrity, warmth and openness. “He was a mentor to a lot of people,” he said. “He’s just one of those people who gave it his all, to his community and to his country.” Along with his wife of 35 years, Esther, he’s survived by three daughters: Catherine, Billie, and Patricia, stepdaughters Shirley and Linda, and 24 grandchildren. He is predeceased by son Richard.

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative is a campaign involving the World Health Organization, Rotary International, the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, and the United Nations Children’s Fund, plus the support of governments and private donors. Last month, Rotary pledged $75 million over the next three years to the cause. Since 1985, Rotary has contributed approximately $1.2 billion towards the protection of children through immunization and other programs. It’s hoped polio – a highly infectious disease that causes paralysis and even death – will be the first disease of the 21st century to be eradicated through combined international investment and immunization efforts. It remains endemic in Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. Last February, India was removed from the list of polio endemic countries after attaining a polio-free designation after reporting no new cases for a full year.

The Rotaract Club of Cloverdale will be wrapping presents by donation as part of efforts to eradicate the crippling childhood disease. Club members will be at the Walmart in Langley Dec. 15 to 16 and 22 to 23, with all proceeds going directly to the cause. It’s just one of the activities the youth service club has undertaken to help spread the message that polio can – and must – be stamped out. “I’m working to end polio now because everyone needs to come together and help Rotary with the final push to eradicate polio from the world,” said Janice Khunkhun, president of the Rotaract Club of Cloverdale. Across the globe on World Polio Day Oct. 24, Rotary clubs and Rotaract clubs – Rotary-sponsored service clubs for young people aged 18 to 30 – were taking part in activities to raise awareness in the battle against the infectious disease.
