Firefighters set for Movember Sheri Regnier West Koortenay Advertiser

Its Movember, and time for the Mo Bros to once again start their moustaches. Since 2003, growing a moustache in November is not just for kicks, but also to raise awareness and money for prostate cancer and research. “I want to support people and their families in the greater Trail area who have been affected by prostate cancer,” said Kyle Boutin, captain ‘moustache-grower’ of team Trail Professional Firefighters Local 941. This year, the firefighters have 12 members on board for the challenge. The men start growing Nov. 1 and for the rest of the month, they can groom, trim or wax their way to victory. “There can be

The annual Christmas Craft Faire at Castlegar’s Community Complex was a popular destination over the weekend. Regional Fire Rescue. “I’m going to grow the old handlebar type this year, the kind that curls up at the ends,” said Rick Morris, firefighter. Gerick’s Cycle and teachers from Crowe may also be seen around town sporting some extra above lip hair for the Mo Bros campaign. “Gerick’s Cycle is looking forward to growing hair to raise money for a good cause,” said Kyle Shannon, Mo Bros team member. This year, JL Crowe is broadening its team by having the student

body grow some extra lip hair, along with the male teachers. “Moustaches will be everywhere,” said teacher and organizer Kyle Percy. “Hopefully we can educate, raise some money as well as keep a few upper lips warm as the weather turns south during the month of November.” But sporting a handlebar this month offers more than a good laugh. After humble beginnings in Melbourne Australia, Movember has grown to become a global movement that has inspired more than 1.1 million people to participate. In 2011, Canada was the hairiest country in the world and set

a record for the most money raised. Nationwide, more than $42 million was raised by 246,000 participants. The public can join the fun of viewing the teams and members by logging onto movember.com, which tracks donations and the ranks “Mo Bros” until Nov.30. Donations can be made at the site (movember. com) or directly to the Kootenay Boundary Fire Rescue Hall on Rossland Avenue. The provincial government is also showing its support for Movember. “Prostate cancer affects one in seven men,” said Minister of Health, Margaret MacDiarmid in a press release.

Celebrating Teck Trail Operations’ 40-year Medallists Trail Operations is pleased to pay tribute to sixteen employees who are celebrating a milestone achievement of 40 years of employment with the company. We thank Darcy Ashby, Bruce Borsato, Rick Brown, Steve Coe, Pat Dabner, Brian Kuffner, Paul Lesiuk, Beni Marrandino, Mike Martin, Danny Mason, Bruce Olson, Randy Peebles, Chris Rhodes, Gord Tarasoff, Al Venier, and Willard White for their longterm commitment to our company. These employees were joined by family, friends and coworkers at a gala on November 1, 2012, where they were recognized and presented with a 40-year gold medallion, a medallist’s jacket, and a Teck gift. Every 40-year employee at Teck is presented with a gold medallion, in recognition of their long-term service, a tradition that dates back over half a century. To date, 1,494 individuals have achieved 40 years of service. The longest service employee was William “Mystery” DiPasquali, who holds the record of 52 years of service to the company, achieved in 1967. Forty years ago in 1972, Teck Trail Operations produced 220,068 metric tonnes of zinc, compared to current production levels of 291,000 tonnes. We produced 184,083 metric tonnes of lead, compared to current production levels of around 86,000 tonnes.

GF Atom 1 hockey team starting to gel

KARL YU

West Kootenay Advertiser

The Grand Forks Grizzlies Atom B hockey team is making steady progress as the season progresses. There are two Atom B teams in Grand Forks and Kevin Sawyer (pictured right with the team), head coach of the Grizzlies, says that his team, comprised of nine and 10-year-olds, is starting to gel. “We (the coaching staff ) have really been impressed with how well they’ve come together as far as how keen these kids are,” explains Sawyer. “We ask them to be here

an hour early and they’re here ready to go. We’ve taught them some positional play and that’s a challenge at this level for kids that young and it’s amazing to see how they really absorb what we’re teaching them and we’re still in early-November and they’re so much farther ahead then we thought they’d be.” Grand Forks Grizzlies’ defenceman Emily Stewart says that she enjoys playing hockey and there are a number of benefits. “It’s fun because you get to work together as a team and it’s exercise and you get to travel to a lot

of cool places and you get to make really good friends on the team,” she explains. Like Stewart, centre Jack Thomas says he enjoys playing as well. “I like playing hockey because it’s physical and it’s just fun,” says Thomas adding that the team has shown improvements since the beginning of the season. “It’s been a lot better. Some of the players have really improved throughout the last couple of games and practices. I have better conditioning and I’m backchecking.” Continued on P. 5

Saints’ Wood named BCIHL player of the week

Submitted

A trio of Selkirk College men’s hockey players have been recognized by the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League for tremendous individual performances that have helped the Saints build an 8-0 record and jump into first place in the league standings. Team captain Jordan Wood has been named the BCIHL’s Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 4 after a pair of multi-point games on the Saints’ recent twogame road trip. On Friday, Wood scored twice and set up another Selkirk goal as his team won their first-ever road game at Thompson Rivers University. One night later he set up a pair of goals

by linemates Jackson Garrett and Logan Proulx as Selkirk won their first ever game against Simon Fraser University and ended the Clan’s 25-game regular season home unbeaten streak. Wood currently leads all BCIHL skaters in goals and points with 10 goals and 19 points. “Our games last weekend at TRU and SFU were an opportunity for our guys to show that they could get the job done against top teams on the road,” says Jeff Dubois. “You get points from those games by working hard, winning battles and taking full advantage of the chances that come your way. Jordan led by example and played two of his best games of the season, so he’s fully deserving of this rec-

While there is certainly no reason for West Kootenay residents to panic, the Oct. 27 7.7-magnitude earthquake in the Haida Gwaii region is definitely a wake-up call to all citizens. Southeastern B.C. is not immune to tremors as recent history can attest. A 2.7 magnitude earthquake near Osoyoos in January was felt in the West Kootenay and one of many over the years. However, Saturday’s major quake, one of the biggest in Canadian history, hasn’t prompted a run on emergency kits at the local St. John’s Ambulance. “No, there doesn’t seem to be any heightened interest in safety alternatives – the earthquake and

Postcards recall Kaslo soldier’s WWI service

GREG NESTEROFF West Kootenay Advertiser

Part of an ongoing series about local historical items on eBay. Three postcards mailed from Kaslo in the 1910s that sold last month were as notable for their recipients as for their images. The first, a fairly beat up bird’s-eyeview of the town, went for $13 US. Although the stamp had been removed and the postmark obscured, it was dated at Kaslo, January 12, 1917 and ad-

dressed to Pte. Frank H. Abey, No. 442319 of the 54th Kootenay Battalion, London, England. Someone amended the address to read France. The message said: “Dear Frank, Just a card to let you now I’m off to the coast in the morning. The weather has just turned lovely now. Suppose you are in England by this time. Hope you are enjoying yourself. Best love from all the folks. Will write you a long letter as soon as I get down to Vancouver. Love, from Lola” (It’s not clear who Lola was.) The second card, a beautiful picture of the SS Kokanee, sold for $65 US. It was also mailed to Frank Abey of the CEF (Canadian Expeditionary Force) at London, but the address was scratched out and replaced with BEF (British Expeditionary Force) and France. This one was dated January 24, 1917 and read: “Dear Boy,

Wishing you a Happy New Year. All well and send their love. No letters from you for three week[s]. Yours Dad” Despite the impatient and somewhat

“Wishing you a Happy New Year. All well and send their love. Not letter from you for three weeks.” letter to soldier, ca. 1917 ominous tone of the message, Frank made it home safely. The son of Frank T. Abey and Kate Kelly, he enlisted at Vernon in 1915 at age 20 and spent four years overseas. Frank married Myrtle Lingard in 1920 and ran a dairy ranch seven miles out of Kaslo. According to the book Pioneer Families of Kaslo, Frank’s brother Harry joined the British Air Force and was shot down in Belgium eight days before the armistice. He also survived and

came home. The third card, a 1918 view of the lake taken from behind the Kaslo Hotel, went for $18.50 US. It was addressed to Hazel Fleener of 1780 Bryant Ave. S, Minneapolis, and postmarked September 17, 1918. The message reads in part: “Sent a box of plums, peaches and apples this morning, Tuesday 17th.” Fleener was raised in Kaslo in the 1890s, the only daughter of a miner-turned-dairy operator and dressmaker. Hazel studied music at conservatories in Berlin and Minneapolis. Pioneer Families of Kaslo says she had a “beautiful contralto voice” and periodically returned home to perform benefit concerts. She married Donald B. Loye and gave birth to a daughter, Joan, in Kaslo in 1926. Hazel Fleener died in California in 1983. This postcard of the SS Kokanee, which sold recently for $65, was mailed in 1917 to Kaslo’s Frank Abey by his father. Abey was then serving overseas with the 54th Kootenay Battalion. Top right is the back of the postcard - “No letter from you for three week[s],” the message reads. Frank returned home safely.

Trophy donated to museum

In time for Remembrance Day, a curling trophy named for Nelson’s most famous World War II veteran has been donated to the city’s sports museum. Here the museum’s Bill McDonnell receives the Hampton Gray VC Memorial Trophy from Terri Richardson of the curling club. The award, also known as the Hampton Gray Cup, was bestowed annually from 1946-62 to the winner of an annual bonspiel in memory of Lt. Robert Hampton Gray, a pilot who died in an aerial attack in Japan shortly before the end of the war. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. The trophy was in a case at the curling club, but too high up for anyone to read. Earle Cutler donated an old display case that used to be in Norm’s Sport Centre to house the trophy and other curling memoGreg Nesteroff photo rabilia.

Green Party calls for smart meter review staff West Kootenay Advertiser

Nelson-Creston's provincial Green Party candidate doesn't want wireless smart meters installed in local homes. Sjeng Derkx thinks the power company should opt for the wired-in meters instead. “The health concerns of individuals about wireless smart

meters are still a matter of debate in the scientific com-Cmunity so Greens only endorse the installation of hard wired smart meters that make use of existing electricity or telephone lines,” Derkx said in a press release. In July, FortisBC filed an application with the BC Utilities Commission requesting approval to begin installing smart me-

ters on homes and businesses in its service area. If the application is successful, meter exchanges would take place over a two year period beginning in 2014. Derkx, along with Green Party energy critic Michael Jessen, successfully applied for intervener status to speak against the application at a BCUC community meeting in Trail on

November 6, as well as at a hearing in Kelowna in February. The Greens are also adding their voice to the call for a review of the BC Hydro smart meter program, something Nelson NDP MLA Michelle Mungall requested in the legislature last April. “Nelson-Creston Greens are very concerned with the way BC Hydro was al-

lowed to implement their smart meter program," Jessen said, referring to the fact the Liberal government exempted BC Hydro from the BCUC adjudication process on smart meters. “The Green Party is calling for a moratorium on further smart meter installations by BC Hydro." Derkx echoed Jessen's concern. “Hydro’s smart me-

ter program is costing $1 billion and no alternative uses for that money were considered,” Derkx said, “$1 billion would have funded free home energy retrofits for 50,000 low-income homeowners, for instance.” Meanwhile, Nelson Hydro has nearly completed replacing 10,000 mechanical metres with digital meters that include

a radio-read feature, but are not the same smart meters being installed by other utility companies. The new Nelson Hydro meters emit a 900 megahertz radio signal, while smart meters installed by BC Hydro emit a signal between 902 and 928 MHz. In both cases, the signal strength is far less than safety limits set by Health Canada.

Opinion Atamanenko column -Veterans deserve the best of services

Bi-monthly column from Southern Interior Member of Parliament Alex Atamanenko. There is a fair amount of debate today about Canada's role in the world and the role that our military continues to play. Many feel that Canada should be returning to a peacekeeping role, while others feel that the current direction is more appropriate in today's world. Regardless of how we feel about this issue, I firmly believe that we must do our

utmost as a society to look after those men and women and their families who have chosen to serve in our Armed Forces. This includes giving them the very best support when they return from combat or retire from active service. In this Remembrance Day column I would like to share some thoughts of my colleague, Peter Stoffer, a passionate advocate for veterans for many years. "It is important for us to remember be-

cause those who went to war will never forget. We need to ensure that the men and women who served, and their families, have the best of resources to meet their needs over the course of their lifetime - from the moment they sign up to the moment they pass away. New Democrats are leading the way with practical proposals to improve the care of our military and RCMP veterans and their families. For many years we

have proposed the following: end the clawback of retired and disabled CF and RCMP service pensions, expand the Veterans Independence Program to all veterans including widows and the RCMP, and grant veterans’ ‘marriage after 60’ pension and health benefits. We continue to press for a public inquiry into CFB Gagetown defoliant spraying, long-term care for all veterans, and the elimination of the politically appointed

Veterans Review and Appeal Board. We are pushing for reforms to the New Veterans Charter, an increase for funeral expenses, action on veterans’ homelessness, and better care for those suffering from PTSD. We advocate for a system that will evolve with the changing health care needs of veterans and that will treat all veterans equally. Veterans should not have to fight the government in court to get the ben-

deserve." In addition to Peter's comments I would to say that, since being elected to Parliament, I have observed how some military personnel need to fight with the current government to receive the benefits they justly deserve. I remember one case of a woman from Ontario who had to go public to finally shame those in authority to ensure that her son, suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), would receive adequate treatment. It seems ironic that a government that finds enough resources to send our soldiers into combat often lacks the resources to assist them when they return. Therefore, as we take time to reflect on the sacrifices that Canadians have made for our country, let us also do everything in our power to ensure that our veterans have the very best support available through their benefits. They deserve it.

efits they need. If Dennis Manuge of Musquodoboit Harbour, Nova Scotia, had not launched a class action lawsuit against the federal government over the clawback of injured Canadian Forces veterans’ disability pensions (SISIP), the issue would likely still be unresolved. It is outrageous that the federal government spent over $750,000 to fight these injured veterans in court. We also know that the federal government has not settled with RCMP disabled veterans in a case that mirrors the SISIP issue and the RCMP have now filed their own class action to end the unfair deductions from their long term disability payments. As well, veterans exposed to chemical spraying at CFB Gagetown, veterans subjected to atomic weapon testing, and veterans unhappy with the New Veterans Charter lump sum payments may plan to launch class action lawsuits against this government to try to get the benefits they

Miracle molecule spelled N.O.

to abortion

Imagine for a moments a "miracle molecule" that could dramatically improve your health-if you could increase the amount in your body. Nitric oxide-otherwise known by its chemical formula as NO. Evolving research is now bringing to light the wonders of nitric oxide and the importance of having enough in your body. The Nitric Oxide Nobel Prize

Three scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1998 for the discovery of the critical cardiovascular role of nitric oxide. The discovery of NO and its function is one of the most important in the history of cardiovascular medicine. Dr. Nathan Bryan, Chief Science Officer. Nitric oxide is a signaling molecule. When it's created and released, this gas easily and quickly penetrates nearby membranes and cells sending its signals. In less than a second, NO signals: arteries to relax and expand, immune cells to kill bacteria and cancer cells and brain cells to communicate with each other.

Truly The Miracle Molecule - It can: prevent high blood pressure (hypertension), keep your arteries young and flexible, prevent, slow, or reverse the buildup of artery-clotting arterial plaques; help stop the formation of artery clogging blood clots, the result of plaques bursting-spilling their contents into their contents into the blood stream and reduce inflammation. By doing all of the above, it can reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke, the #1 and #3 killers of Americans. But, this molecule has more miracles to perform. It can also: improve penis erections, enhance sexual sensitivity and blood flow to the clitoris, reduce the risk of diabetes and disastrous diabetic complications, such as chronic kidney disease, blindness, hard-to-heal foot and leg ulcers, and amputations. Limit the swelling and pain of arthritis, boost the power of pain-relieving drugs, calm the choking inflammation of asthma, protect your bones from osteoporosis, help provide the moodlifting power behind anti depressant medications, assist the immune system in killing bacteria and limit skin damage from the sun. Many symptoms of nitric oxide insufficiency occur with age: loss of energy, we begin to forget things, our sexual health and performance declines and we begin to develop aches and pains. The loss of nitric oxide may be responsible for many of these symptoms of aging and at the root of cardiovascular disease. And the most reliable way to know if you are nitric oxide-insufficient or not is your age. If Your Over 40, You Probably Don't Have Enough and restoring your nitric oxide level is one of the most important things you can do for your health. More NO, Less Arthritis Pain

NO is decreased in joints stressed by "chronic load-induced stress" (such as knee arthritis in people who are overweight) and "blochemical change-induced stresses" (such as the oxidative damage in bones caused by diet high in saturated fat and low in antioxidant rich vegetables and fruits). "NO-based intervention may produce substantial pain relief with painful osteoarthritis." Skin Diseases: Less Sun Damage with NO?

NO plays a vital role in the skin, orchestrating normal regulatory processes. It helps maintain the "barrier function" in keeping out unwanted germs and toxins, and may help protect from the sun's UV radiation.

You are invited to a

Veterans Celebration Luncheon Wednesday, November 14 1 - 2:30pm at 2350 72nd Ave, Grand Forks, BC Come out for free food and live entertainment.

Sexual Function

Research shows that erectile dysfunction is usually a circulatory problem. Adequate amounts of Nitric Oxide are necessary to produce dilation of penile arteries to allow sufficient amounts of blood to enter the penis. The same applies to woman: without proper blood flow to the clitoris, they cannot experience orgasm or increased sensitivity. Aging is THE Risk Factor

There are many risk factors for heart disease-high blood pressure, high cholesterol, family history. But one risk factor that is common to everybody is reaching age 40. Aging is a risk factor for a heart attack or stroke because it leads to an accumulation of protein in artery walls, making them stiffer. You have fewer capillaries, the tiniest, cell-wide blood vessels. As you age, so does your endothelium: you don't generate as much NO, and your arteries don't dilate as easily as widely. So What To Do? Restore Your Nitric Oxide!

For more information call (250) 442-0667

Thankfully, nitric oxide restoration is not only possible but EASY! There are plenty of ways to generate more NO: a diet rich in NO-producing nitrate and nitrite (mainly from leafy greens); a NO-boosting supplement such as Neo 40 Daily; NO-restoring regular exercise; and a lifestyle factors that preserve and increase NO, such as sufficient sleep and stress control.

Horoscope Michael O’Connor

for the

Week

November 9, 2012

Tip of the Week: The next round of U.S. presidential leadership has begun. This will be a particularly potent stretch of years, according to the planetary alignments. With Uranus and Pluto locked in a tight match, a cycle which will continue until early 2016, the tone is tense. Of course, the same can be said of all governments and leadership in the world. True, we have been in revolutionary times for decades, even centuries, yet this next few years especially presents a very sharp turn in a narrow channel boasting a significant descent. Like a lively river with a swift current and many bends and narrows there is plenty of reason to be excited, and alert. A global culture is clearly being born. Cosmopolitan cities and even countries is the emerging norm. Humanity is being pushed to acknowledge and embrace the fact that the lines of division which once seemed so clear are dissolving at a steady rate. Secular traditions, customs and philosophies in all sectors of society and on a global scale are where the casualty is most evident. Beyond race, religion, creed and so on, the clashing of economies due to multi-national interests, a centuries old theme, rages on. Of course, woven within it all is politics. True democracy both invites and challenges increased participation. Thanks to the internet, uncensored public opinion has reached unprecedented levels and these records will be broken yet. What interesting times! (PS – Mercury is Retrograde in Sagittarius/ Scorpio: Nov. 6 – 26th)

You are likely a very forward oriented person and this is especially important now. You may however feel the urge to retreat, but can you? Affordability may be one issue. Anticipating this significant change of pace and rhythm is important now. At best you’re perspective is reflective and philosophical. At worst you feel lost. Tune in!

Getting extra clear on where your commitments lie continues. Your sights are set on the future. A revolutionary urge is leading you forward. Ambition is certainly a factor and you are not so inclined to reveal all of your reasons, plans or strategy. This may be causing some upset with others. The floating question is: whose interests are you truly pursuing?

These are both expansive and contractive times for you. Increasing your scope of influence and/or travel and adventure is the expansive part. Becoming more disciplined in your daily rhythm is the contractive element. The latter emphasizes health. Deciphering just where you belong or best fit in the world is featured. Avoid paying lip service, speak your truth!

Tapping your own and the creative resources of others is a current theme. The pace of change has likely slowed and now you need to pursue new interests. The sooner you can decipher a direction the better. This is an invitation to explore and cultivate latent talents. Key people and circumstances continue to push and now it is time to push back!

Focusing to fortify your base and build-up your core strengths is a central theme these days. Discipline is required and organization is implied. This process of setting the stage and preparing the ground is important. Once you do, your confidences will rise and you feel not only ready but excited and determined to break through.

You have entered a deep and dynamic learning curve. If you feel at all uncertain of your direction, take the time to decipher it now, the sooner the better. You stand to achieve a great deal. By outlining the parameters you will know where, how and when to fill in the blanks. There is reason to say you want to share something deep and beautiful. Begin it now!

The time has come to build upon new foundations. Yet, renovating existing ones is also implied, so both are true. What you used to deem important is fading fast. The time has come to explore new possibilities. Opening to new knowledge, philosophies, cultures and/or places are all ideal considerations. Accept the challenge; it is here to stay anyway!

Dealing with, or is it duelling, with dual desires may not be a new theme yet it is probably strong of late. Self-assertion is important and ideal. You will not be swayed easily from your course anyway. How can you ‘have it all’? The simplest answer is to be honest and negotiable. Conservative attitudes and even secrecy do have their place, but this may not be the time.

A deepened soul searching journey has begun. This adventure can prove to be one of the highlights of your life, despite the deep tone. Alternatively, it could prove to be a nightmare, if you do not tune-in and cooperate. You are meant to reconsider who you truly are. A clue: you are much more than you likely think or know. Enter the mystery!

Making the most of your own and the creative powers of others, continues. This is a call to exercise a fuller measure of discipline and integral action. Stepping it up will increase confidence, win votes and open doors. The deepening of commitments to your goals may well stir fears. The key to managing these is to acknowledge and confront them, within.

Your power potential is on a steady rise. Of course, with it come increased levels of responsibility; are you prepared to assume more? While having a vision is healthy, allowing your imagination to stray too far away from what is required of you in the here and now could cause problems. Focus to bring your imagination fully under your control!

A great adventure has begun. You have been summoned to scale the slopes of your higher mind. Deepened awareness, a greater sense of communion with life and heightened states of awareness and clarity that sees through and beyond previous veils of illusion are all features of this adventurous ascent. Pack well, this journey will take time.

Reg Parsons

‘Private Eye’ (bronze)

Reg Parsons is truly an artistic renaissance man. A gifted sculptor and painter, the Cranbrook resident is also something of a poet, using verse to occasionally accompany and summarize the subject he has captured in stunningly lifelike detail. Take his entry in this year’s exhibit. It is a magnificently realized bronze of a red-tailed hawk sitting on a fence post in all its splendor.

As important to me is getting the details of the setting just right.” Chuckling, he says with a smile, “I guess that’s my training as a taxidermist coming to the fore!” Parsons’ work is appreciated and treasured by collectors across western Canada and the U.S. and can be found in public and private collections around the world. P H O T O G R A P H E R’ S DELIGHT…another beautiful waterfalls picture in the making. Here is Cal Him, president of the West Kootenay Camera Club (WKCC) in action, doing what he loves so much. Now Cal and the rest of the club members cordially invite all you photographers to join in the fun and submit your favorite pictures to the “23rd Annual WKCC Photo Show 2013” competition, to be held early next year. As in the past, there are several categories to be displayed and judged. With many new categories and one additional category -Wildlife added, there will now be a total of ten, giving everyone lots of latitude for their skills and artistry to be displayed. The categories are; Nature, Wildlife, Human Interest, Creative Image, Flowers/Plants/Fruit, Portraiture, Architecture, Weather, Travel, and an

Open category. Please go to the club’s web site {www. westkootenaycameraclub. com) to get all the relevant details and changes for next year’s competitions, information is posted there for the public to view. This will permit a lot of creativeness as well as traditional photography techniques to be shown. All entries will be judged by a team of experienced judges and each photograph will be critiqued and suggestions for improvement will be given. There is nothing like a little competition and fair commentary to bring out the excitement and creativeness in us all. We sure hope this will spark the interest of the many artistic members of the public for which the West Kootenay region is so well known. We look forward to viewing your best photos in our photo show. Hope those reading this announcement will relate the facts of the event to all their friends and acquaintances. Come one…come all!
