Ernie Baird is reflected in a collection of photos from his service in the Second World War as a pilot of Lancaster bombers, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

It’s perhaps fitting that Burnaby Second World War veteran Ernest “Ernie” Baird, who grew up dreaming of flying airplanes, was an airforce bomber pilot before he could even drive a car. It’s a dream that might never have come true growing up in the village of Nakusp, in the West Kootenays of British Columbia, if it wasn’t for
military recruiting teams that came to town. So it was at age 19 that Baird began his string of good luck, or close calls, depending how you look at it. After joining the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 and going through training on the Prairies, he showed he had what it took and made the cut as a pilot, earning his wings and a commission. Once overseas in England in 1944, assigned to 12 Squadron of the Royal Air Force based out of Wickenby, it wasn’t long before he

had his first brush with the dangers of the job. Baird had just taken off on a training flight when he saw the plane of another crew-in-training crash and burst into flames at the next base over, only 10 miles away. That crew would never get a chance to fly a real mission, he thought to himself. After working his way up flying increasingly larger planes, from the Wellington to the Stirling and Halifax, Baird was assigned to fly Lancaster bombers, the primary heavy bomber used by the RAF.
The Lancaster rarely had a co-pilot, leaving Baird responsible for entire flights of upwards of 10 hours long. He recalled on his first flight as first pilot, captain of a six-man crew, he experienced his first encounter with anti-aircraft fire from below. “At that point, you weren’t allowed to look scared. You had to show a lot of confidence.” He had to show that calm demeanour on every one of the 30 missions, or sorties, that made up the full tour he completed. Please see CLOSE CALLS, A5

Burnaby homeowners will see hikes in their next property tax bills from $65 to $95 after council approved a new fee structure for garbage disposal Monday. The increases are to cover the rising cost of disposing of garbage collected from residential toters, according to a city staff report. Metro Vancouver tipping fees have increased by 50 per cent between 2008 and 2012, from $1.4 million to $2.2 million for Burnaby alone, and are set to jump another 41 per cent in the next several years, from $107 a tonne in 2013 to $151 a tonne in 2016. Meanwhile, despite a move in 2010 to the automated pickup system using toters and a fee structure that Burnaby city hall had hoped would encourage waste reduction, the amount of garbage being picked up from single and two-family homes has remained almost constant, the report said. see INCREASED, A8

Crimson gold The red tide is in. But this one won’t make you sick. Every fall, Mayberry Farms floods its 170 acres of cranberry vines in south Burnaby, so crews of labourers can shake the cranberries to a soft, soggy landing, creating a colourful red sea between Marine Way and the Fraser River. The berries are then corralled with booms to be loaded by conveyors into hopper trucks for transport to the processing plant. Cranberries harvested this way are destined for juice and sauces. Fresh cranberries are harvested dry. Cranberries are one of B.C.’s largest berry crops; the 70 million pounds produced annually represents 95 per cent of the cranberries grown in Canada. B.C. is the largest producer of cranberries after Masachusetts and Wisconsin.

Close calls, and a little luck ⫸
continued from front Page
Those ranged from participating in the infamous bombing of Dresden (“on the way back, from 50 to 60 miles away, we could see the huge fire”), to his final mission, bombing Berchtesgaden, Adolf Hitler’s former hideout. He also had to show it during the close calls, of which Baird vividly remembers two. In one, a flight to Norway, his aging blue logbook held together with Scotch tape lists the mission simply as “gardening.” “What it really was, you were dropping mines to land in shipping lanes,” Baird said. “They were designed to float just below the surface of the water.” Norway was occupied by the Germans during the war and Baird’s crew had been assigned to target the narrow fjord of Oslo harbour. Such mining missions required that the mines be dropped in a line, then the pilot had to continue flying straight ahead for about 30 seconds so cameras on board could shoot photos of where they were located, allowing navy minesweepers to find them in future. But this time, just as Baird started on his straightaway, the anti-aircraft fire erupted from below. “After a few seconds, with this stuff all around us, there was a huge bang. It just felt like we hit a brick wall.” On the way home, the flight engineer and the rest of the crew checked the plane, and couldn’t find any damage. The next morning, when Baird and his crew went to their plane, “the ground crew had taken the whole wingtip and removed it. A shell had gone right through the wing.” The hole was about four inches going into the bottom side of the wing and on the top side, where the shell came out, the hole was closer to the size of a large pizza. Just a few inches in one direction and the shell would have hit one of the Lancaster’s gas tanks and caused an explosion. Mid-air close call
Baird’s plane wasn’t even hit on his second close call. They were on a night bombing mission over Germany with a long string of bombers. After the bombs were dropped on their target, pilots were told to fly for a few minutes before turning left or right and head home. He had made his turn when he saw another Lancaster had turned the wrong way and

was headed straight for Baird’s plane. “I threw my stick down and went underneath him,” he recalled. “I looked back and he just flew right over top of us.” The sudden move had the rest of his crew losing gravity and hitting the ceiling, resulting in much cursing of the pilot. “That was probably the closest we came. Just a fraction of a second difference, that’d be curtains for you.” luck on his side
Baird figures he had luck on his side. After completing his tour, he was on leave in London when Victory in Europe was declared. “Everyone was just celebrating. Hundreds of thousands of people in London. You could hardly move.” After VE day, Baird and his friends figured they could get home to Canada more quickly if they volunteered to serve in the Far East. It worked. The war in Europe ended on May 8, 1945. He arrived home in Nakusp on July 1 for a few weeks leave before being posted to Nova Scotia where he was supposed to start training on planes even bigger than the Lancaster to help the Americans in their bombing campaign of Japan. Before that training could take place, on Aug. 6 and 9, the Americans dropped the atomic bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and Japan’s surrender was announced Aug. 15. Flying Officer Ernest Baird was discharged within a couple weeks, made his way back home
and the following year took up Ottawa’s offer of free tuition and studied civil engineering at UBC. Thanks to his military service, Baird was the only one of 10 kids in his “dirt poor” farming family who went to university, eventually working as an engineer at the City of Vancouver. Now 89, he and wife Joan have five kids and 12 grandkids and have lived the past 61 years in Burnaby. In 1950, he was presented with the Distinguished Flying Cross, the citation stating that while completing numerous operations he “displayed the utmost fortitude, courage and devotion to duty.” Of course, every year at this time, Baird remembers the friends he lost, in particular a buddy named Jack East. East was a fellow small-town B.C. boy from Keremeos and they had done all their training together. Once in England they were separated, East posted for a time in Scotland before ending up on a base only 10 miles from where Baird was stationed. The plane Baird saw crash in the distance on that training day in 1944 was being piloted by East. All but one crew member, the rear-gunner, had burned to death. The man relayed that in the last moments before the crash, East said, “I wonder what Ernie will think of this.” Almost seven decades later, the memory is still enough to make Baird choke back tears. “Those were probably his last words.”

ADRIAN RAESIDE:
QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
Timely warning The recent 7.7 magnitude earthquake near Haida Gwaii came as a shock in the Lower Mainland. Many here not only didn’t feel it, but didn’t even hear about the tsunami warning until almost an hour later, which is also shocking given it was the second biggest earthquake in B.C. history, larger than the one that devastated Haiti in 2010. Emergency Info B.C. issued its first public warning at 8:55 p.m., almost an hour after the quake hit. It explained that regional operation centres were notified within 12 minutes. Regional authorities then contacted local ones. Phone calls were made in order of priority, as information was verified. So the multi-faceted emergency management system in B.C. is a phone tree? What if some wires had been knocked down by a fallen tree? The system also sends out faxes. May we remind those in charge that it’s not 2001 anymore. Many adults, and children, have cellphones, with e-mail and text and face-to-face messaging, not to mention Facebook and Twitter and Instagram accounts. The latter could be used to inform the public instantly. To suggest that the ground shaking is itself an earthquake warning is a feeble response given a train can do the same. Time is critical in such instances. It shouldn’t take an hour to issue a tsunami warning. Minister of Justice Shirley Bond has admitted aspects of the earthquake response could have been done better. Televised alerts are already being discussed. The government should consider every tool available, including social media, to inform the public when people’s safety is at stake. We deserve fair warning, not excuses and platitudes. —Black Press

Road pricing has merit The idea of road pricing was explored in some detail at a recent forum hosted by Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts, and is a subject worthy of far more attention. The issue of who pays for what in the area of transportation has got far more attention in Surrey in the last couple of years, as work on the Port Mann Bridge project has proceeded. As the tolls come closer, more and more people question the wisdom of having those who cross the bridge pay hefty tolls, while all other drivers using the vastly improved freeway do so for free – as long as they don’t cross the bridge. When coupled with the Golden Ears Bridge, the only other toll bridge in the Lower Mainland, it seems that people living in Surrey and Langley are the primary targets of toll collectors. The other area of discussion about who pays revolves around transit users. Most of them pay their fares, and they pay a hefty price to ride the system if they are regular users.
Frank Bucholtz While much attention has been focused on cheats and the lax system of fare enforcement, the fact remains that it costs $5 to ride from Surrey to Vancouver during the work day. While there are discounted rides available through passes and other programs, that’s a lot of money – more than it will cost to cross the Port Mann Bridge. A fairer way to pay for use of the transportation system seems to be a logical step. Watts suggests that if there was road pricing on a per-kilometre basis, the cost could be modest – but revenue could be significant. She anticipates that such a system would allow for a reduction in gas taxes, and if drivers see that those who drive the most actually pay the most,

OIL SANDS ARE CANADA’S TREASURE Re: Protest or apathy (Editorial, NewsLeader, Nov. 2) Kudos to Black Press for openly questioning the public opposition to the Northern Gateway project. As very little information about the safety precautions being incorporated into the project is being published, public opinion is strictly based on irrational fears repeated by the greens. Increased fees avoid need to take money from general taxes ⫸
continued from front page
The city aims to change that with the new fees along the principle of “use more, pay more and use less, pay less.” Choosing the smallest-sized toter, 120 litres, had previously triggered a $40 credit on the tax bill to encourage people to use that option. Starting in 2013, that will cost $25. The default size, 180 litres, had been free but will now cost $75. The cost of the 240-litre toter will
go from $117.50 to $205 and the 360-litre size, from $290 to $385 in 2013. The increases are limited to recovering the cost of tipping charges the city pays Metro Vancouver and does not include other garbage service costs such as recycling, composting, labour, fuel or equipment. Coun. Dan Johnston, chair of the city’s finance committee, said the idea is to move the garbage disposal charges to the March tax
bill to clarify what it costs to get rid of trash. “Right now it’s buried in the residential tax bill. The average person doesn’t have a clue what they’re paying to dispose of their garbage.” The belief is that the higher fees will provide a financial incentive for people to recycle and compost more, which would lead to less garbage going into bins and a related drop in what the city pays to dispose of it.
He added that informal audits found that in many cases, toters are currently only being filled half to two-thirds full every week, apparently the result of people being cautious and choosing toters that were larger than they actually needed. Residents will get the chance to exchange their toters for more appropriate sizes for free from Jan. 1 to March 15. After that, such exchanges will cost $50. Coun. Colleen Jordan noted

The G stands for “Guaranteed.” As in “Guaranteed to reduce money stress.”
At 1.60%,* our 9-Month GIC can make investing your money seem a lot less nerve-racking. Because it’s guaranteed, your money grows while your risk and anxiety shrink. It’s also RRSP eligible, since it’s never too early to start planning for a stress-free financial future. Like all of our GICs, this one’s backed by our Haggle-free Guarantee,® so you always get the best rate without having to negotiate – ’cause, we know haggling can make us all a bit tense too. that without the fee hikes, the increased tipping fees are being subsidized by general residential property taxes. That can’t continue without the city having to cut its budget in other areas. The change wasn’t approved unanimously, as Coun. Sav Dhaliwal was the lone council member to oppose it. He noted that property tax bills won’t be going down even when the garbage disposal fees are charged separately.

When Burnaby’s Jadene Lim attended the We Day event in Vancouver earlier this month, she was an admirer of those who assist communities in the developing world. This summer, she’ll become one of those people after she won an all-expenses paid 12-day trip for herself, a teacher and four other students, to India to volunteer on a community project. “It was just shock and excited,” Lim said of her reaction to having her ballot drawn at the event. “It took me so long to actually process what happened.” Lim, 16, is a Grade 11 student at Burnaby North secondary. She’s also the secretarytreasurer of the school’s Free the Children club, which raises money for projects in developing countries. While the details have yet to be worked out, Lim believes she and her schoolmates may help to build a school in India. She’s also excited to see firsthand how the money they raise helps people in those Lim communities. The Burnaby North students will be joined by groups similarly chosen at We Day events in Toronto, Winnipeg and Calgary. The trip will be taken in July 2013 and will include a visit to New Delhi, and sights such as the Taj Mahal, before moving on to a Free the Children community where they’ll be working on a project to be determined, said Greg Owen, vicepresident of public affairs for EF Educational Tours, which partners with Me to We and Free the Children in organizing such volunteer trips. Owen noted that tickets to We Day events are not available for sale. Rather, to get a ticket, students and schools must already demonstrate a commitment to Free the Children, to being active in the community and to social justice issues. In past years, participating students have returned from the volunteer trips as changed individuals. “Travel certainly changes lives,” said Owen. They come back more mature, with a deeper understanding of other cultures, with a renewed commitment to contribute to their local and overseas communities and often they find a new passion. “It really does open up their eyes to the world and to their possibilities as individuals.”

Trucking industry has plenty of opportunity Trucks move 90 per cent of consumer goods and foodstuffs in Canada, creating opportunities for employment Odds are you wouldn’t be reading these words if it weren’t for trucks. If you’re holding a newspaper, the wood and ink that comprise these pages traveled on trucks, from the forests to the pulp mills to the printing plants to the carriers. If you’re seated in front of a computer monitor, the components likely all traveled to the assembly plant by truck, from there to the distributor, on to the retailer and maybe even right to your doorstep. The light bulbs that allow you to read on these dark fall evenings traveled by truck as did the clothes that keep you warm, the food in your pantry and refrigerator. Trucks touch our lives in every way, every day. According to the Canadian Trucking Alliance, trucks move 90 per cent of all consumer goods and foodstuffs within Canada. In 2005 British Columbia’s 23,000 registered trucking companies transported 66.7 million shipments; that’s 6.15 billion tons of cargo. It’s a big industry that’s getting bigger. According to Statistics Canada, the trucking industry grew by 42.2 per cent from 1997 to 2006. Truck transportation represents 1.23 per cent of B.C.s gross domestic product; that’s more than the pulp and paper industry,
ThinksTock
There’s more to the trucking industry than just driving. Job opportunities also exist for dispatching, maintenance and repair, shunting, loading and unloading.
agriculture and coal mining. Of course with those kinds of numbers come opportunities, for jobs and entrepreneurs. There are more than 260,000 truck drivers in Canada, according to the latest Census, making it the leading occupation
among males. But that workforce is getting older; in 2011, the Canadian Trucking Human Resources Council (CTHRC) reported more than 18 per cent of the industry’s workforce is 55 years of age or older. Attrition, coupled with the increasing
demand from economic growth has led the British Columbia Trucking Association to estimate the province requires more than 4,000 new truckers per year. They’ll end up working for companies like Argus Carriers of Burnaby, which has been moving goods around the province in its distinctive green-and-white trucks since founder Gerry Royston delivered parcels in his Austin truck in 1948. Today the company has more than 45,000 square feet of warehouse space from which it ships around the Lower Mainland, Okanagan, Vancouver Island and the Pacific Northwest. But you don’t need to know how to grind your way through 16 gears to be working in the trucking industry. Trucks must be loaded and unloaded, they must be serviced and dispatched. Trucking-related employment accounts for another 140,000 jobs. Skills needed for some of those positions can be learned at the BCIT School of Transportation’s heavy equipment group, commercial transport mechanic and mobile equipment and forklift operator programs. With more than 60 per cent of employers surveyed by the CTHRC reporting difficulty filling positions like transport trailer technicians, shunt drivers and supervisors, opportunities abound for graduates. newsroom@burnabynewsleader.com

only having to deal with the occasional foray into Rebel territory. “If I make one mistake, it was going to be all over. He kept his team in the game. He gave our team nothing,” he said. Marroquin missed the past couple of weeks of action because of a blood clot in his left arm which had become infected. But he wasn’t about to miss an opportunity to advance to the provincial championship for a second consecutive year. “Not for nothing. I wanted
to be part of this win,” said Marroquin, who plays club soccer for the South Burnaby Metro Club. His play drew the admiration of Puni. “He’s gone through a lot of adversity, and he’s got a lot of talent, but now I know he’s a fighter.” Nicholas Leonard was the shooter that put the final dagger in the Highlanders’ hopes by beating Greensides with an emphatically taken penalty kick.

As darkness descended upon Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West on Tuesday afternoon, so did a dark feeling in the minds of the Burnaby South Rebels soccer squad. They had fired shot after shot after shot at West Vancouver Highlanders goaltender Shawn Greensides, and the tall, lanky keeper kept thwarting their thrusts. There was no doubt Greensides was getting into the heads of the South shooters. “He was even in my head,” said South head coach Robbie Puni. “This guy’s got a big wing span.” So it was a bit of a surprise when the game went to a penalty kick shootout after scoreless regulation and overtime sessions and Rebels shooters managed to connect on their first four shots on Greensides while the Highlanders missed two. The 1-0 win propelled the Rebels into the AAA high school championships to be held at Burnaby Lake Nov. 22-24. “It was a huge win. We did control most of the game. Their goalie was outstanding. I told these kids to keep working,” said Puni. Puni praised his own goalie, Alex Marroquin, particularly for coming up with two stops in the shootout. Marroquin admitted to being a bit nervous heading into the shootout. “I was trying not to hesitate. I was trying my best to stay calm,” said Marroquin, who is nearly a foot shorter than Greensides. The drama built for him during the game as he watched his teammates dominate and

Cornish up for two CFL awards St. Thomas More Collegiate grad Jon Cornish will be going to the Grey Cup, or at least to its awards ceremony, where he’ll not only be up for top Canadian honours but best player as well. The CFL announced Wednesday that Cornish, a graduate of St. Thomas More Collegiate, has been voted as the West finalist in not only the most outstanding Canadian category, but the most outstanding player as well. Cornish will be up against Toronto receiver/kick returner Chad Owen for the top award, and Montreal Alouettes linebacker Shea Emry, a native of Richmond. Cornish broke a 56-year-old CFL record for Canadians by leading the league in rushing with 1,437 yards this season. The CFL will hand out its awards in Toronto on Nov. 22.

St. Thomas More quarterback Liam Feenan escapes a Vancouver College tackler in the first half of their BC High School Football grade 8 game, Tuesday at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West. The Knights lost 34-7 and are 3-3 on the season while VC is 5-1.
After three consecutive losses, Burnaby Lake Rugby Club’s men’s premier league squad took it out on Bayside AA slamming the visitors from South Surrey 52-0 last Saturday. Burnaby is 2-3 on the season with their next game being against Meraloma Rugby Club (5-1) at Connaught Park on Nov. 17. In first division play, BRLC beat Bayside 41-0 to improve to 3-2 on the season while the tier 1 women’s squad downed the Meralomas 5-0 and sit second at 5-1.
Chemistry brews confidence ⫸
continued from pAgE A21
“I just thought stick with the way I always go in the penalty kicks and I did and he went the other way,” said Leonard, who admitted it was nice to see the Rebels shooters connect on all four penalty kicks. “I was surprised, especially him being the keeper he was. I thought he would dive the right way at least once.” Leonard had a second half shot on which he thought he would score but Greensides dove and managed to knock it around the net for a corner kick. “We just kept going at him. We were trying to do everything we could to beat him, but unfortunately we couldn’t put it in the back of the net,” said Leonard. Last year’s Rebels also advanced to the provincials finishing fourth, and Leonard believes this year’s club is better situated to win it all even though it tied for third during the regular season and lost the BNW banner final game to the AA Cariboo Hill Chargers. “Now we just have better chemistry through
the team, and we still have just as many good players,” said Leonard, who felt there was too much bickering on last year’s team. “We didn’t have any of that this year. We just play as a team, no negativity on the team, it’s all positive.” He didn’t get any argument from Puni on his analysis. Puni said there was a lot of infighting with the seniors last year, possibly because he was a new coach trying to install a new system. Another reason for the Rebels to be confident is South was playing without its best player, Matt Shannick. “He’s the guy that stirs our drink,” said Puni. West Van still has a shot at the provincials. The Highlanders were to play the Handsworth Royals on Thursday for a second berth. Handsworth edged Byrne Creek 2-1 on penalty kicks, outscoring the Bulldogs 4-1 in the shootout in a battle of the BNW and North Shore No. 2 teams. Also on Tuesday, Cariboo Hill defeated St. Thomas Aquinas 3-1 in North Vancouver to secure a berth in the AA provincials to be held at Burnaby Lake Nov. 19-21.

Onni commissions study from Urban Analytics
Adding value near rapid transit The availability of rapid transit is one of the most important things that buyers are looking for in a home development in recent years, and a report by Urban Analytics for Onni has demonstrated the increase in value that comes with this convenience. “Transit plays a big factor in the market,” says Nick Belmar of Onni. “This report just substantiates our argument about what people could expect when they buy near transit.” The report notes that new condos located along the Canada Line in Richmond and the Cambie corridor saw an increase in value, with Richmond seeing an increase of 21
per cent and Cambie finding a 33 per cent rise between 2009 and 2010. In Richmond, values increased by 15 per cent before the line was completed, and then six per cent over its first year. Cambie saw similar results, with a 19 per cent increase before the line opened and a continued rise after. “Values of newer condos located near a new rapid transit line will see an increase in value in the period ... preceding the completion of a rapid transit system, and ... while the rate of value appreciation tends to slow in the months after ... completion, higher values are sustained in the long term,” says Urban Analytics’ Michael Ferreira.
developers recognize this area as a hot spot.” Carlsen says. “Buyers want to live here.” It’s no wonder, with Willowbrook Shopping Centre just a five minute walk away, and schools, recreation, dining and shopping all in the neighbourhood. The area is incredibly family friendly, but it also works well for first-time buyers and downsizers alike. Owners will be able to take possession of their new place at the
end of 2013. Over 50 per cent of the 69 homes are already sold, and Carlsen attributes this to three very important factors. “This is a fantastic product at a fantastic price in an unbeatable location,” he says. “I really think it comes down to value.” Two-bedroom, two-bathroom homes at Salix start at $229,900. For more information, visit www.salixliving.com or call 604-530-0054.
‘It’s really worked out well’
Salix offers great value in Surrey’s Clayton Heights By Kerry Vital
Woodbridge Homes is bringing a touch of modern elegance to Surrey’s Clayton Heights neighbourhood with its condominium development, Salix. That elegance starts outside your home, with the five-storey building’s classic Georgian-inspired architecture. Red brick and styled ironwork combine with the craftsman woodwork accents to make for a chic entrance. Salix is surrounded by lush greenery, and includes a courtyard for residents with arbors and benches.
“
This is a fantastic product at a fantastic price in an unbeatable location,” says sales manager Rob Carlsen.
Inside, buyers have three different interior design schemes to choose from: two contemporary and one traditional. The contemporary schemes (called Sallow and Osier) feature stone countertops and chic white satin flat panel upper cabinets and Teak or Wenge laminate flat panel lower cabinets, complemented by a modern stainless-steel feature hood fan and a ceramic tile backsplash with glass tile accents in the kitchen. Meanwhile, the traditional scheme (called Willow) includes elegant granite countertops and Victorian cabinetry in a dark wood, with its own custom Broan hood fan and tumbled limestone backsplash with a custom hand-set centrepiece. Both options are beautiful, so it’s up to you what style you want in your home. “This allows purchasers to pick and choose,” says Carlsen. “It’s really worked out well.” All three options feature stainlesssteel appliances and under-cabinet lighting, along with spacious bathrooms with walk-in showers surrounded by ceramic tile and well-lit large vanity mirrors, so your morning routine will be easy as possible. There are 15 different floorplans available, ranging from 474 to 1,290 square feet in a variety of one-, twoand three-bedroom configurations, and all have proven popular with buyers, Carlsen says. “The larger ones have done really well with downsizers. They don’t need a
big house anymore, but they still want space,” he says. Nine-foot ceilings are included throughout, with 10-foot ceilings on the top and bottom floors. Laminate flooring is featured in the main living areas, while comfortable trackless nylon carpeting in the bedrooms is great to sink your toes into first thing in the morning or late at night. Oversize windows let the natural light flood your home no matter what the weather is doing outside. If you’re in the mood for a bit of outdoor living, every condo at Salix has a private balcony or patio. One thing that Carlsen is particularly excited about at Salix is the storage space that comes with each residence. Located in your parking stall, the fourfoot by eight-foot space with its solid metal roll-down door could really be called a mini-garage. “It’s safe, secure and convenient,” says Carlsen. “It’s been huge with buyers.” The Clayton Heights area has seen a boom in new home projects recently. “I think it speaks to the fact that

Homes at Salix include a private storage space for each unit, top, that serves as a mini-garage. The spacious floorplans include plenty of natural light and opulent master suites, above.
