Stay safe and shift into winter Don’t let winter road conditions catch you by surprise

Whether you use your vehicle for work or leisure, take steps to reduce your risk of a crash on winter roads. WorkSafeBC, BCAA Road Safety Foundation, Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, BC Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association, and the other members of the Winter Driving Safety Alliance have a few tips: • First, check your local traffic and weather report or visit DriveBC.ca before heading out. Avoid driving if the weather is bad, even an hour or two can make a big difference. If you can, wait until the weather improves. If you don’t have to go, then don’t drive. • Install four matched winter tires. Winter tires provide better stopping power and traction in cold weather and snow. Check for wear before mounting and check tire pressure every

Watch for us! Our new temporary location will be opening soon!

few weeks. • Equip your vehicle with emergency gear in case you become stranded. Carry a windshield scraper and snow brush, extra windshield washer fluid, flares and matches or a lighter, tire chains and gloves, a first aid kit, a shovel and a traction mat, sand or cat litter, a flashlight and extra batteries, battery jumper cables, a spare tire, a wheel wrench and jack, and extra clothing and footwear. • Slow down and drive for the conditions. The posted speed is the maximum speed under ideal conditions. In winter, it is safer to drive below the posted limit. According to the BCAA Road Safety Foundation, the number of calls to BCAA for roadside assistance typically increases up to 25 per cent during the rainy, snowy winter months.

The

Problems with tires are common because motorists drive over more potholes, which can create a bulge in a tire, break or bend wheel or suspension components and/or cause a flat to occur. A bulge in a tire is also a safety hazard that should be addressed immediately. If you have to drive, be smart. Check the conditions, make sure your vehicle is winterized, drive for the conditions and give yourself extra time, and carry an emergency survival kit. Download the following websites to your phone or bookmark them on your web browser and check them often. • DriveBC.ca is a good source of current road and travel conditions. • ShiftIntoWinter.ca has tips on how to prepare yourself and your vehicle, and how to drive safely on winter roads.

LOOK GOOD FEEL GOOD

Safety first on the Internet Tips for parents

The Internet and social media sites are great ways for families to stay connected, but do you know how to navigate through the risks online to keep your family safe? The B.C. Liberal government is reminding parents of the need to be aware of what to watch out for when their children are on the Internet - viewing inappropriate material, sexual exploitation and cyberbullying, as well as frauds and scams. Instilling real-world judgement and online etiquette in your children can go a long way in keeping your whole family safe. Internet and social media safety tips: • Think twice before posting information

and/or photographs. Once online, information is out of your control and cannot be retracted. • Talk to children about the dangers of sharing excessive information. If advertising that a family is on holiday by writing on the front door or living room window is not

OK, why put that type of information online for the world to see? • Signing a child up to a site before they

reach the user age outlined by the site is a violation of the terms of service. Lying about an age can result in your child receiving advertisements directed to an older audience. • Remind youth that cyberbullies feed on negativity. The best way to make cyberbullying stop is to ignore the online bullying environment and report it in the real world to school or authorities. • Parents shouldn’t be afraid to venture into social media. You may want to take this

on with your children and learn together how to navigate the content safely. This will help you get to know what your children are doing online. • Encourage online etiquette and instil best-time practices with youth. Encourage “cool-down” times and putting away devices when opportunities for family time arise. • Don’t make your passwords obvious and change them frequently. Announcing a ‘NEW’ Fundraiser from DID YOU KNOW: Presbyopia -

Most people over the age of 45 become aware that they are losing the ability to see objects or reading matter close to their eyes. Presbyopia is a loss in focusing ability; it is certainly a nuisance, but it is not dangerous. It is a normal, inevitable part of reaching middle age. The only effective “treatment” for presbyopia is to wear proper glasses or contact lenses.

Pull over for paramedics

When minutes can affect a patient’s outcome, BC Ambulance Service (BCAS) paramedics use lights and sirens to reach their destination as quickly as possible – whether it’s getting to a patient or getting a patient to hospital. Remember: • Stay alert while driving. Avoid distractions and keep the noise level down in your vehicle. • Signal, move to the side of the road, come to a safe stop. This is required in British Columbia.

• Don’t block or drive on the shoulder of the road. Stop, so others can pull over, too. • All traffic moving in both directions must stop (except on a divided highway when the emergency vehicle is on the opposite side). • It’s illegal to follow an ambulance or any emergency vehicle responding to a call. Stay at least 150 metres behind. BCAS crews respond to more than 486,000 events every year throughout the province, nearly one call

Ways to save on event tickets

The Internet has become a boon for the secondary ticket market for sporting and entertainment events, which include tickets bought and sold by professional brokers, speculators and season ticket holders. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) recommends some smart shopping advice to save money before trying to score those event seats. The secondary ticket

sales market is estimated by some to be worth $4.5 billion annually, with companies, such as Stubhub.com, offering a way for consumers to buy and sell tickets. Consumers can pay significantly higher ticket price mark-ups in the secondary market, but there are other risks. Consumers who go online to classifieds,

every minute 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Lights and siren are used only when necessary. Operating under the authority of the Emergency and Health Services Commission, BCAS provides public ambulance service

throughout B.C. The EHSC has the legislated mandate under the Emergency and Health Services Act to provide B.C. residents and healthcare professionals with access to pre-hospital emergency and patient transfer services.

Ban on young people from using tanning beds takes effect

Changes to a provincial regulation banning youth under the age of 18 from ultraviolet (UV) tanning are now in force to reduce the chances of developing skin cancer later in life. Going into effect on Oct. 15, businesses that fail to post the required sign informing the public of the ban, or who violate the ban by unlawfully permitting minors to use their indoor tanning equipment without a prescription, will face a $345 fine for each offence. The World Health Organization has found indoor tanning before the age of 35 raises the risk of melanoma by 75

Book club benefits challenged

Do you, or does someone you know, miss the ability to read? The Canadian Council of the Blind (CCB) 100 Mile House & District Chapter, also known as the White Cane Club (WCC), is organizing its second book club gathering – and it’s not just for the blind. Anyone interested in finding out how to access books in alternate formats is welcome to

attend, says WCC vicepresident Kathy Sanness. “What we’re trying to do is get a book club going for people who can’t read properly because of any type of a disorder.” Many people are “print disabled” due to a variety of health conditions, not only vision loss or illiteracy, she explains. This includes the inability to hold a book (or hold one steady), or eye strain

caused by reading. “The CCB has been trying to get a book club going provincially, but I really had always wanted to do this, so I decided to get one going locally first.” Hosted at the 100 Mile House Branch Library on Nov. 14 at 1:30 p.m., the book club welcomes individuals with reading difficulties; their family members, friends or caregivers; and also

community volunteers to join the group to learn about the various alternative formats available today. Sanness notes for those who can afford them, audio e-readers (with text-to-speech capability) weigh less than many large print books. There are also large print e-readers, which can be more affordable, she adds. “A lot of people who can read a large-

print book can read an e-reader.” However, there are also several other options, including online audio books,

MP3s, CDs, tapes and large-print books. For more information, Sanness invites folks to call her at 250395-4547.w

The 100 Mile House White Cane Club (WCC) had a good turnout at its recent gathering of a new book club open to anyone who wants to explore reading options in alternate formats. This can be especially helpful for folks who love to read, but have any kind of disorder that prevents them from reading properly.

B.C. streamlines permit process

The B.C. Liberal government is introducing a single cutting permit procedure to make it easier for local governments, First Nations and other non-commercial organizations throughout the province to harvest timber from community forests. Currently, organizations that manage community forest agreements have to apply for a permit for each site in their licence area where they want to cut down trees. It’s a system that often leads to the need for multiple permits. The change means

eligible organizations will only need a single cutting permit, good for up to four years, for the entire community forest. It’s a simpler process, which allows community-based forestry operations to be more responsive to community need and market demand. The streamlined process supports the government’s forest sector strategy commitments to improve access to forest tenures for a range of users and identify and pursue community forest agreement opportunities

Community Forest Agreements are longterm, area-based licences designed to encourage community involvement in, and management of, local forests. There are 47 agreements in place throughout the province with an annual allowable cut of 1.3 million

cubic metres of timber. A community forest is a forestry operation managed by a local government, community group or First Nation, for the benefit of the entire community. Community forests provide revenue to support local priorities.

Advice from BBB

From 4

such as Craigslist.ca and Kijiji.ca, can also face legitimate concerns about fraudulent tickets being sold. To secure tickets from anything from concerts to sporting events, BBB offers the following advice to consumers: • Use social media to gain an edge. Many authorized fan websites for music groups and sports teams will have mailing lists or updates about pre-sales. Consumers may want to sign up for these mailing lists to get advanced notice of a ticket presales. • Ask about dynamic pricing options. Find out if the primary ticket seller uses dynamic pricing options. In cases of sporting events, some tickets may be cheaper if the visiting team is in less demand. Ticket prices for concerts can change right until the

day of the event. • Check out online comparison websites, such as Tickpick.com, to get an estimate of ticket price values to ensure that if you are buying above face value, that you are not being price gouged. • Ticket protection for online buys. If you use a fan-to-fan website, such as Stubhub. com or eBay.com, look at whether the website has any protections in place in case your tickets ends up a fake, or for non-delivery of the ticket.

Families can register births of newborns online

British Columbia parents will be able to register the birth of their newborn children online, using a new birth registration system. Registration creates a permanent legal record of a birth and every B.C.-born baby’s birth must be registered with the Vital Statistics Agency. No fee is charged for registrations received within 30 days of a child’s birth. Parents can already go online to apply for their child’s birth certificate. As part of the new online birth registration system, they can also apply online for Canada Child Benefits, the baby’s Social Insurance Number and Medical Services Plan coverage. Registering the birth of a child will take around 20 minutes and requires the presence of the parent(s) who will be recorded on the child’s birth registration. Parents will also need basic information on hand, including the baby’s full name,
