Why is the East Kootenay important to you? What do you value most about our environment? These questions and others will be asked next week when Kootenay residents are invited to important workshops about the future of the Columbia River Treaty. The treaty is a water management agreement between the United States and Canada for the Columbia River and the Kootenay River, which unite in Grand Forks. The agreement covers the construction of dams and storage reservoirs along the course of the rivers, including Koocanusa reservoir. This helps to prevent catastrophic flooding in both Canada and the U.S., and optimizes power generation along the rivers. Under the treaty, which was signed in 1964, B.C. agreed to build three dams: Duncan, Arrow and Mica. The U.S. built Libby Dam in Montana in 1973, creating Koocanu-

sa reservoir. Columbia Basin Trust, a Crown corporation, was created in 1995 to support social, economic and environmental well-being in the Columbia River Basin using some of the proceeds of the treaty. The treaty doesn’t have an end date, but the U.S. and Canada have the chance to terminate the agreement on or after September 16, 2024. Either side has to give at least 10 years’ notice of the termination, meaning that both countries are reviewing the benefits and future options of the treaty ahead of the September 2014 deadline. Here in B.C., the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Natural Gas is heading the treaty review. The team will conduct economic, environmental, social, legal and hydrological analyses in order to make a decision on whether to continue, amend or terminate the Columbia River Treaty.

GOODBYE, OLD PAINT: Cranbrook lost a bit of its history with the demolition of the old Jones house on Wednesday, Nov. 7. The house on the corner of 2nd Street North and Cranbrook Street North was built by Frank Jones in 1941. Frank Jones and his brother Art were the builders responsible for much of Cranbrook’s architecture, especially downtown. Frank and Art took over the company from their father, A.E. Jones. Some of the buildings they constructed include the Cranbrook Police Station, the Invermere Police Station, the old Cranbrook Library (since torn down), and dozens of homes in Cranbrook. A dentist’s office will rise on the site.

Girl Guides get new campsite SALLY MACDONALD Townsman Staff

Cranbrook’s Girl Guides will soon have a brand new camp facility in Wycliffe. After a long road of fundraising, construction has finished on a kitchen, dining and activity hall, and bunk room for 36 people on a 10 acre property in Wycliffe. What’s more, there will be three tenting areas, two closer to the buildings and one further out for older girls.

“It’s more of a wilderness site so they can learn independence and how to camp,” said Pam Cross, chair of the Girl Guides camp committee. The organization sold a property in Moyie eight years ago after encroaching development made the campsite not very private anymore. Cross said they hope to have the Wycliffe site up and running by Spring. It has 10 undeveloped acres on either side, so there will be 30 acres that

campers can explore. “The girls can go out on the trails and learn wilderness skills,” said Cross. So far, the new camp – a much higher calibre than the local Girl Guides have had before – has cost about $400,000. “Several companies donated materials or labour. We are very fortunate to have good community support,” said Cross. But the work is not done. While the buildings are com-

plete, water and sewer still need to be put in and the kitchen, dining hall and bunk room stocked. “We need everything – we have no dishes, no pots, nothing,” said Cross. Once complete, the facility will be used by Girl Guides groups travelling from all over Canada and North America, as well as Scouts and church youth groups.

Dave Gollogly, Trickle Creek Golf Course, presented a $1,937 cheque to Dana Osiowy, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cranbrook, after a fundraiser in October. The golf course celebrated its 20th anniversary with a tournament, and golfers took part in a “closest to the pin” challenge on the 11th hole. The event raised almost two thousand dollars for Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Osiowy said it was a great opportunity to tell people a little more about the organization’s work.

Fire hall’s future still up for grabs Arts council, Search and Rescue both have sights on Cranbrook’s decommissioned fire hall downtown Sally MacDonald Townsman Staff

Cranbrook and District Search and Rescue is worried that it will soon be out of a home. The organization moved into the decommissioned fire hall in downtown Cranbrook in 2010, after 36 years operating out of a onebay garage with one truck staying outside and no washroom facilities. Now they are happily ensconced in the old fire hall, where they can conduct training, store vehicles and gear, and run search operations. But the lease from the City of Cranbrook is for four years only, expiring in 2014, because council hasn’t yet decided about the best use for the fire hall in the long term. Search and Rescue president Greg Bedwell wrote to city council last month, asking for certainty about a new lease, while the organization sets up its five-year operating plan. Cranbrook and District Arts Council has pitched the facility to city council as a new

home for the arts, with a gallery, office and studio space. But Mayor Wayne Stetski said at council’s Monday, November 5 meeting, the future of the fire hall has not yet been determined. “The question that is before city council is: what is the best use for that important piece of real estate right here in downtown Cranbrook?” he said. “We have put money into the 2014 budget potentially for converting the fire hall to an arts facility as a home for the arts. But there is a lot of discussion that needs to happen between now and then.” Councillor Denise Pallesen stressed the importance of Search and Rescue for the community. “I’d like to see a situation where we have them in a building of their own. Maybe they can stay in the fire hall on the main floor, the arts council could take the second floor. I think we really need to help this organization out wherever we can,” she said. Cranbrook has lost one of its greatest volunteers. Peter Relkoff, a founding member of Cranbrook Search and Rescue in 1974, passed away on October 22, aged 74. On Monday, November 5, two Cranbrook councillors offered tributes to the dedicated volunteer. “He loved his community and loved to volunteer more,” said Councillor Denise Pallesen. “I don’t know many people who can say they have volun-

teered for 36 years.” Councillor Angus Davis said he knew Relkoff personally. “He is going to be greatly missed in this community. He was a fine gentleman and a good citizen, a good example for the rest of the community. We miss you very much, Peter,” said Davis. As well as his work with Search and Rescue, Relkoff volunteered for Fernie Ski Patrol, Cranbrook Ambulance Association, and the Chamber of Commerce tourist information booth. A funeral service was held on October 27.

the assurance that whatever the future of the decommissioned fire hall, Search and Rescue will not be neglected. “We will be working with Search and Rescue to make sure there is a suitable home if they don’t continue to be there in the fire hall,” said Stetski. “Our responsibility as a council is to make sure the old fire hall located right here downtown finds its best use for moving into the future. But we certainly won’t abandon Search and Rescue as part of the process.”

The Cranbrook and District Arts Council prepped its annual Perfect Gift Christmas exhibit on November 8. The exhibit features CDAC members and includes a variety of mediums such as acrylic, mixed media, pottery and watercolours. The show will run until Dec. 5 and a reception is planned to celebrate Black Friday on Nov. 16. The artists will all be on hand that evening from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The CDAC gallery will be open for Black Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. for some unique gift shopping which now includes two permanent jewelry and postcard displays. This year has seen meltdown in the Arctic, heatwaves that killed over ten per cent of the main grain crops in the U.S., big changes in the jetstream (which may be responsible for the prolonged high-pressure zone that steered Hurricane Sandy into New York), and then the fury of the storm itself. It has long been argued that what is needed to penetrate the American public’s resistance to the bad news of climate change is a major climate-related disaster THAT HURTS PEOPLE IN THE UNITED STATES. Even if Sandy may not have been a direct consequence of global warming, it fills that bill. It may get the donkey’s attention at last. There is no guarantee of that, and each year the risk grows that the average global temperature will eventually rise by over 2 degrees C (3.6 degrees F) and topple into uncontrollable, runaway warming. Moreover, the Republicans still control the lower house of Congress. But hope springs eternal, and at last there is some. The past two weeks have seen an unexpected and promising conjunction of events: a weather event that may shake the American public’s denial of climate change, and the re-election of a president who gets it, and who is now politically free to act on his convictions. As “Businessweek” (a magazine owned by Michael Bloomberg) put it on last week’s cover: “It’s global warming, stupid.” Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist based in London

The Great Fernie Fire of 1908 What’s Up? JANUS: Cranbrook Then & Now

he summer of August, 1908, was not a good year for forest fires. Hot, dry weather created conditions ripe for disaster. On the day of Saturday, Aug. 1, many Cranbrook citizens battled a threatening blaze just to the south of the city. At 4 o’clock that afternoon a message came down the wire from Fernie saying that the FernieFt. Steele Brewery was on fire, then the lines suddenly went dead. When communication was restored a few hours later came the unbelievable news that the town of Fernie was gone, wiped off the face of the map. The people of Cranbrook, their own fire reasonably in hand, immediately undertook preparations for the aid of their sister city. The first relief train left for Fernie shortly after midnight with another following soon after. The wellsprings of the fire began over a week before, nothing more than smouldering embers in the timber limits of a logging company to the west of the city. At the time it was not considered serious and was ignored. Big mistake. On the morning of August 1, a light breeze soon changed to a high wind that fanned the embers. As the wind grew to a gale the flames began their inexorable drive towards the town. The blaze jumped the river while taking out the bridges and rolled into the west side of Fernie. The pest house (a hospital holding smallpox victims, all of whom escaped) and the Fernie Brewery were soon afire. The flames carried on to lumber yards near the city where volunteer fire fighting efforts proved futile. Within minutes three hotels were in flames. Smaller fires started throughout the town and soon converged to form a cyclonic fire spout of nearly indescribable proportions. The Opera House roof blew off before the building caught fire while the roof of the Fernie Hotel flew into the air and scattered across the townsite. The front of the Waldorf Hotel blew diagonally across the street and through the windows of the buildings opposite. Large, red hot sections of corrugated roofing from the arena flew in the air for several blocks. Men and animals were flattened by the winds while large trees were uprooted or snapped like toothpicks. Within an hour almost all was lost. Those who had not already escaped to the river

The process of rebuilding begins. Many people took refuge during the fire in the present day City Hall (centre). The gutted Post Office (centre right) is now the public library. huddled in and around the Crows Nest Coal Co. office (now Fernie City Hall), the Western Canada Wholesale warehouse and the Catholic priest’s residence (all concrete structures which managed to withstand the blaze). Many left on a train headed towards the east but it was forced to retreat from the fire near Hosmer and discharge passengers to spend a harrowing night on the river. The Cranbrook trains managed to get in and return through the flaming forests with hundreds of refugees clinging on for dear life. The first train arrived in Cranbrook at 4 a.m. as the city prepared to do everything possible to ease the suffering of the victims. The Auditorium (the site of the present day Armond Theatre) and the Curling Rink (in what is now Rotary Park) quickly became living and eating quarters, but it was not nearly enough for the 3,000 refugees. With the population of Cranbrook practically doubled every available space was utilized: Hotels, lodge halls, houses, stores, railcars and vacant

lots soon filled to overflowing with stunned refugees, many in need of medical attention and all frantic for news of missing relatives and friends. Relief committees provided shelter, food and clothing while local societies began the task of fundraising (the efforts of which would soon spread across the continent while nearby cities including Nelson, Spokane and Kalispell would offer unstinting relief). Fernie, once a town of over 5,000 people, was now a wasteland within a wasteland: 100 businesses and 700 residences in smouldering ruins. The death toll turned out to be remarkably low. The lists (and not all agree) included Mrs. Clara Barton, Lena Bell (of the red-light district), John Cupik, three unidentified bodies including a young girl in the Waldorf Hotel and, perhaps most tragically, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ford and their two children who took shelter in a well and, according to eyewitness accounts, boiled to death. In true pioneer fashion the people of Fernie, once recovered, soon rose to the challenge

of creating the town anew. A tent city rapidly grew on the site as men began the construction of temporary wooden shelters for themselves, their families and their businesses. The recently installed and undamaged sewer system was soon put to use and within a few days the CPR had the yard up and running. The King Edward Hotel opened for business on August 8, followed shortly by a bank, a bakery, three more hotels, a general store and a livery stable. Music once again echoed through the valley as the Salvation Army band reclaimed their undamaged instruments hastily stored in the vault of the recently constructed Post Office which, although gutted, still stood. The first wedding in the new town took place on August 13. Although life in Cranbrook gradually returned to normal over the next two weeks, for the people of Fernie it would take somewhat longer as, undaunted, they began the task of laying the bricks and mortar of the future. janusthenandnow@shaw.ca

Times may be tough for the Kootenay Ice, but no one is moping about their recent record, which includes seven straight losses. Defenceman Joey Leach said no one likes to lose, but pointed out that a couple games came close to ending in Kootenay’s favour. “You can think if you get a bounce here or there, or if you do one more simple thing, you can get that win,” Leach said. “…We just got to stay positive, make sure everyone’s heads are still in it and keep a positive attitude.” They will bring those good vibes to Western Financial Place this Saturday night, where they face the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors. The Warriors have had struggles of their own, dropping their last six games. However, two of those games went to overtime, while another pair were decided in shoot-outs. Kootenay’s record of seven straight losses hides the fact that the Ice have played some very close games. Last Sunday’s result was decided in the last ten minutes, when Medi-

cine Hat scored halfway through the third period to break a 1-1 tie. Despite putting nearly double the shots on goal against the Blades, the Ice lost 3-2 in overtime last Friday. Ice head coach Ryan McGill hopes that hard work and an emphasis on the basics in practice translates into improvements on the scoresheet. “You got to continue to get better at all the fundamentals. Passing, shooting—you have to be real good in your decision making and communication,” McGill said. “You go through everything and make sure that it’s consistent, and if they can be consistent, then they have to apply that to games, and inside games, their consistency will show through.” One thing McGill has been waiting for is his players to rise up and take on leadership roles in game situations, which means developing that consistency. “I think that’s a good sign of leadership, is when every individual is ready to play within the confines of their game,” said McGill, “and then that, in turn, provides leadership, and that’s what we’re looking for

GUELPH, Ont. Maxim Shalunov’s goal at 13:05 of the third period gave Russia a 2-1 win over the Ontario Hockey League’s all-stars on Thursday in Game 3 of the Subway Super Series. It was the first time the Russians have beaten the OHL in 19 games and gave them a 2-1 lead in the series. Game 4 is on Monday in Sarnia, Ont., as the OHL will look to tie the series. The Avs continue their home stand this weekend, as one team is hungry for revenge, while the other is hoping to continue their winning ways. The men’s team swept the competition last week against the visiting Columbia Bible College Bearcats, while the women suffered the opposite results at the hands of their opponents. This time, it’s the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades that will venture into Avalanche country. The Cascades are on the bottom of the Pacwest league in the men’s division, however, the women’s side reign undefeated at the top. The Avalanche ladies are still smarting from their weekend performance against the Bearcats and disappointed that they didn’t take any sets away from their opponents. “They were not satisfied last weekend when they lost to CBC and I think they want to prove that they can be a

good team this coming weekend,” said head coach Agata Bendkowska. Bendkowska predicts UFV will put up a good fight and added it’s always better to play against good teams, as it forces her girls to rise to the occasion. “…We know that we have to just play hard and own points, because we know that they are not going to

give us free points. We know that we need to come here tomorrow [Friday] and be ready to go 100 per cent.” Andrea Taylor, who plays left and right side for the team, said the team has been practicing hard over the last week. “We really need to focus on getting our kills in, getting around the block is our major focus against UFV,” Taylor said. Taylor added that the squad learned a hard lesson against the Bearcats a week ago.

“We didn’t really come together as a team as well as we did against Douglas and Capilano, but this week, we’ve worked a lot harder at coming together as a team, so hopefully we can play together.” For the men, the standings indicate that UFV is on the bottom, but that doesn’t mean head coach Steve Kamps and his guys are

taking the opposition lightly. “Their record is 1-5 but they’re a stronger team than that,” said Kamps. “They faced both top teams already and that’s four of their losses and we definitely can’t take them lightly. “If you don’t prepare, any team can beat any team on any given night.” His squad will benefit from the return of Drew Hamilton, a setter who was out with a virus for a few weeks. Over the course of the week, his team has

been working on scoring with the outside hitters and stopping the opposition when the ball isn’t passed very well. That being said, left side Kieran Read said the team needs to focus on their game and what they can control. “Even CBC on Friday, when they weren’t at their best, we had to keep the focus on ourselves instead of them, because once we start playing down to their level, if they’re having an off game, that’s how we get beat. “We just need to focus on our side and we’ll come out on top.” The Avs are hosting students from Adam Robertson Elementary in Creston, and any Cranbrook-area volleyball students can gain free admission if they wear their school jerseys. NEW YORK - The NHL and NHL Players’ Association will meet for a fourth straight day in an attempt to salvage a shortened season. Key negotiators from the league and union, including NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr, met for more than five hours Thursday and indicated talks will continue on Friday. “I don’t really have much to say,” said Bettman. “We met with the players’ association the last three days and we’re planning on meeting again tomorrow. But I’m not going to discuss the negotiations or the substance of what we’re talking about. “I really don’t think that would be helpful for the process.” Fehr was similarly tight-lipped. “All I can say is that we discussed a wide range of topics relating to the issues between us,” he said. “I really can’t say more than that at this point.” Reporters managed to uncover the “undisclosed” location where the talks are being held. The sides have been congregating this week at the midtown Manhattan offices of Proskauer Rose, the law firm

where NHL lead counsel Bob Batterman works, and across the street from the building where the 2004-05 CBA was hammered out. Little is known about exactly where talks stand.

On Wednesday, the NHLPA tabled new offers regarding revenue sharing and the league’s “make whole” provision, with the union suggesting a system where the players’ share in revenue drops to 50-50 in the third year of the deal. The “make whole” provision is seen as the fundamental issue left to solve. With all regular-season games cancelled through Nov. 30, negotiations have reached a critical and delicate stage. Ten days will be needed from the time an agree-

ment is struck until the season starts and there is still hope among the parties that a shortened schedule could begin by Dec. 1. For that to happen, signs of progress need to emerge soon. “Every day that passes I think is critical for the game and our fans,” said Bettman. The sides have met for more than 20 hours over the last week, starting with an informal eighthour session between deputy commissioner Bill Daly and NHLPA special counsel Steve Fehr in Chicago on Saturday. Larger groups that included owners and players spent more than seven hours together on Tuesday and another five hours on Wednesday. Thursday’s meeting were viewed by both sides as extremely important. Other weighty topics, including revenue sharing and contract rules, were discussed by the NHL and NHLPA earlier in the week and still need to be worked out before the 54-day lockout comes to an end. The push is clearly on now to see that happen. Both sides have cleared their schedules and will continue to do so as long as positive momentum exists in negotiations.

paper that the fossils were first discovered at a dig near Foremost, Alta., by American paleontologist Jann Langston Jr., who was working in Canada at the time. They said Langston, now a professor emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin, left the bone fragments wrapped up and shelved in the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa. Evans and Ryan started to wonder in 2003 about two pieces of the neck shield stored loosely in metal cabinets at the Ottawa museum. One was a spike and the other was an unusually large socket. He said the pieces aroused his curiosity in part because they came from rock formations that contained some of the oldest dinosaur fossils in Alberta. That led them to investigate further in 2009, when they found Langston’s bone fragments from at least three animals, wrapped in a plaster and burlap casing. The paleontologists took the fragments to the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, where

Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I often feel sharp bites like pinpricks on different places of my body, especially at night. At first, it happened only in the bedroom, but now I get them while sitting in my family room and even in my car. I thought it might be bedbugs, but an exterminator ruled that out. He said he had no idea what was causing the bites and couldn’t help. A second exterminator told me the same thing, so I was really disappointed in them. But the bites are becoming worse. I’m not imagining them, because other members of my family have experienced the bites, as well. We cannot see the bugs, but we know we are being bitten. It is unpleasant living this way, and we certainly don’t want to spread the problem to others. I am so frustrated that we cannot get this diagnosed and treated. Can you tell us where to turn? -- Twice Bitten Dear Bitten: In many states, it is illegal for exterminators to apply pesticides without knowing the type of bug they are targeting. Talk to your doctor, and also see a dermatologist to find out whether you have physical evidence of bites and can identify the culprits. Some doctors consider “invisible bugs” to be psychological in origin, but there are plenty of tiny mites that cannot easily be seen. You may also have an infection or allergy. Have you made any changes to your environment (new shampoo, soap or detergent, recent gardening, getting a pet)? Wash all your clothes, sheets, towels, etc., in hot, soapy water and put them in the dryer. Seal blankets and other items in plastic bags. Clean the floors and carpets. And now we’re going to do the same because your letter made us itchy. Dear Annie: I have given baby showers for each of my close friends. However, these same friends are now expecting showers for their second and third kids, too. I believe every child is a reason for celebration. But I find it tacky for them to think everyone should attend another large baby shower within two years. I am happy to visit the mother and baby after the child is born and bring a gift. But has etiquette changed so much that there are multiple baby showers within the same family? -- Still Friends Dear Still: No, etiquette has not changed that much. The intent of a baby shower is to welcome the new child into the world and provide necessary items for the child’s care. With subsequent births, those items can be handed down, making another shower unnecessary. However, it is OK to have a second shower if the guest list is small and limited to family, very close friends and those not invited to the first one. Also, it’s OK if there is a large gap between births (making hand-medowns less likely) or a couple has moved to a new city with new friends. And some friends host a “shower” for the overwhelmed parents, which is also fine. Of course, whether or not to participate is entirely up to you. Dear Annie: I read a response to “Disappointed in Ohio,” who complained that the husband of one of her friends kept attending their regular all-girl get-togethers. I am part of a small group of women who worked at a bank together 60 years ago. We have been having lunch for several years. One of the women developed Alzheimer’s and lives in a care facility. When she could no longer drive to our lunches, her husband brought her to the restaurant and picked her up when we were done. After a while, we invited him to stay. We enjoy his company. Beautiful questions: Learning again to ask

ne of my favourite ways of talking about Christian faith is to affirm that faith is not so much about finding the right answers as it is about learning to ask the right questions. I remember a campaign in the 1980’s which used bumper stickers and billboards to proclaim proudly that “Jesus is the Answer!” I understand what was behind that, but it seems to me to be a limited kind of approach. It reminds me of a joke about a minister telling a children’s story, in which she asked the kids, “I have something in mind that is small, has a bushy tail, and stores nuts for the winter. What do you think it is?” A smart young boy raises his hand and says, “It sure sounds like a squirrel to me, but I bet you think it’s Jesus!” I want to affirm that the church needs to learn not just to honour questions, but to actively welcome a questioning attitude. I believe that questioning helps us grow. It’s a sad truth that many people, both inside and outside the church, are afraid to ask questions. For some, it’s because our society equates intelligence with knowing things. Questions reveal that we don’t know something, and so we keep quiet. Maybe we should change our opinion, and remember that questioning isn’t a mark of a lack of intelligence; it’s evidence of a curious and lively mind which seeks to know more. Inside the church, there is also a sense that asking questions seems to indicate a lack of faithfulness. It seems that many folks have been taught that questions are a sign of doubt, of not believing enough. It’s time to change this as well, since I don’t think questions are the opposite of faith. Faith has to do with trust, and that kind of faith grows in the midst of such questioning. There are all kinds of deep and profound questions which prompt us to think more deeply. What is life’s purpose? Imagine spending some time with a group of people talking about that!

Does God exist? And if God does exist, and if God is supposed to be so good, why do so many innocent people suffer so tragically in this world?

Why do people treat each other as badly as we so often seem to do? Why is it, that in the midst of terrible human tragedies such as Hurricane Sandy, some people are busy trying to figure out how they can use the situation to their benefit? Why do they use the opportunity to steal, vandalize, brutalize others? Why do so many oppress those who are different — gays and lesbians, Muslims, or different in some other way? Related to that, why is it that evil seems to work so well for some people? Why does it

seem that taking shortcuts is so successful? What about prayer? What is prayer all about? Does it work? I must admit that I have a lot of questions about prayer. At the very least, it seems to me that prayer has to do with connection. We connect with God when we pray. We also connect with those whom we hold up in prayer, or those events and circumstances for which we pray. We connect with others who are praying for the same situations. These questions, and others like them, are important. I think that asking questions about God, about our faith, about our lack of faith, about why people relate to each other the way we do —questions about whatever! — is crucial to the life of faith. We need to nurture an environment in which questions are invited, encouraged, embraced, welcomed. Questions are one of the important ways in which we progress, learn and change. There are a few wonderful sites on the internet which help us ask questions of faith and life. One is called “40 Questions Everyone is

Afraid to Ask”. It begins with “If today were the last day of your life, would you want to do what you are about to do today?” and ends with “What’s one easy way to waste a life?” In between are a bunch of

Sharon Gibson was born March 16, 1950 in New Westminster, British Columbia. She passed away on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 in Cranbrook, British Columbia. Sharon was known for her beautiful smile, her signature laugh, compassion, kindness and generosity. She loved her Plecas and Waterston families. She was predeceased by her parents John and Myrtle Plecas. She is survived by her husband Bruce Gibson, her beautiful daughter Alanna (Brandon) Cavener, her granddaughter Maurianna Jane (William) Cole whom she dearly loved. She is also survived by her three brothers Dr. Darryl (Joanne) Plecas and children Ryan and Sean; Daniel (Gwen) Plecas and children Stephen, Nadine, Cherie and Christina; Mike (Tamarra) Plecas and children Jodie, Adam, and Owen Coleman; her sister Penny Jack and children Tabitha and Tecia; her brother-in-law Ian (Judy) Gibson, her sister-in-laws Trudy Gibson (Stew Craig) and Jill Plecas. A memorial service for Sharon will be held on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at First Baptist Church in Cranbrook at 1:00 pm. Her Interment will follow in Fort Steele Cemetery. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in honour of Sharon may do so to the: B.C. Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospital Foundation, 4480 - Oak Street, B321, Vancouver, British Columbia, V6H 3V4, as she had a great love for children.
