According to Stephanie Melvin, B.C.’s deputy superintendent of motor vehicles, 45,000 seniors are tested by their doctors each year. If they’re flagged by their physician, the drivers can be forced to take the province’s DriveABLE test — a series of in-office and on-road assessments. In 2011, Melvin said, about 2,500 drivers took the test. Of those, approximately 65 per cent failed.
AGE an issue behind the wheel? By Tim Petruk STAFF REPORTER
tim@kamloopsthisweek.com
In Royal Inland Hospital right now, two Kamloops women are fighting for their lives. One is 19. She has been in a coma since September, when she was struck by a vehicle while walking through a crosswalk on Fortune Drive. The other is 53. She is in critical condition after being hit by a car on Willow Street on Nov. 3. In both cases, police have said the drivers were men in their 80s. The two collisions are the latest in a string of crashes involving elderly drivers dating back to last year. Remember those two days in June 2011, when two separate storefronts were demolished by two separate vehicles driven by two separate — both identified by police as “elderly” — drivers? In the weeks that followed, two pedestrians — one
a six-year-old girl walking on an Aberdeen sidewalk, the other a 45-year-old man walking near a downtown parking lot — were hit in separate instances by elderly drivers. It raises the question — are too many Kamloops drivers too old to be behind the wheel? The answer is no, according to those charged with keeping our community safe. “It’s not age being a factor,” Kamloops RCMP Staff Sgt. Grant Learned said. “It’s making sure people have the physical and mental capabilities to drive effectively, no matter what their age. “You can’t cast aspersions on a person’s ability to drive simply by virtue of their age.” But, Learned admitted, health problems making driving difficult become more likely as a person gets older. “There is a recognition that as you get older, things
like your reaction time slow down,” he said. “But, it’s not automatic. It’s not every person. You’ve got to be very, very careful in tarring all seniors with the same brush. “You have a cross-section of bad-driving behaviour that fits every segment of driver.” However, age is a concern, at least according to the provincial government. In 2010, Victoria enacted a law requiring drivers to undergo a medical exam every two years once they reach 80 years of age. City, Blazers make hockey extra special By Adam Williams SPECIAL TO KTW editor@kamloopsthisweek.com
The second season of Hockey for Youth with Special Needs has begun and the kids can’t wait to get back on the ice. With the support of the Kamloops Blazers, the Kamloops Blazers Sports Foundation and Consignor Sports, the program had a successful first season and has grown in popularity this year, with seven new members and 14 returnees. Participants and family members visited Consignor Sports last week for an equipment fitting in preparation for their first on-ice session on the weekend. Coach Ashly Hay and Kamloops Blazers Matt Needham, Mitch Friesen, Brayden Gelsinger and Josh Connolly were on hand to help the kids get suited up. “It’s nice to help out young guys,” said Connolly as he helped Andrew Watkins lace up a pair of skates. “It’s been a privilege to play for the Blazers, so it’s nice to help out and give back to the community.” All of the program’s participants are of differing disabilities, ages and levels of hockey experience. Despite their differences, Hay said, the kids are able to connect with each other quickly because of their com-

mon love of hockey. “They have quite a bond with each other, with myself and the coaches,” Hay said. “It’s funny because even though we have
seven and eight-yearolds and we have 17-year-olds, they all mesh well and they all get along fantastically, so it’s a lot of fun.” Between the City
of Kamloops and Consignor Sports, participants are given most of the basic equipment, such as hockey gloves, shin pads, elbow pads and hockey pants.
They also receive a $35 discount from Consignor Sports to help pay for a helmet, a stick, skates and any other equipment they still need. “What we love about [the program] is its innocence,” said Consignor Sports owner Ted Desireau. “These kids are so excited to just put on their hockey equipment. If it’s 10
sizes too big, they don’t care. They just want to go out and play hockey.” For Dave Watkins and son Andrew, who also participated in the program last year, the experience has been rewarding. “Andrew couldn’t skate when he started,” Watkins said. “He was skating after two practices and, by the time

we finished, he was a lot faster than I am.” Dave and Andrew learned about the program from Andrew’s teacher. Andrew, whose favourite part of playing hockey is skating, lights up at the mention of trying on a pair of skates and saying hi to a friend from last year’s team, “He’s definitely getting interested in sports more,” Dave said. “He watches hockey all the time now and he’s thrilled about going skating again.” From the city’s perspective, the program is aimed at providing the kids with a forum for socialization, while at the same time encouraging them to get physically involved in a team sport. Last season, the team travelled to a tournament in Penticton, involving clubs from Kelowna, Penticton and Vernon. The squad plans to head to Kelowna for a tournament this year. The city hopes the program will continue to grow and that it can one day develop a local league. But, even in its current form, the benefits for the participants are evident. “All the kids are happy,” Hay said. “It’s such a special program to watch because it’s kids that are facing challenges every day. “This is an extra challenge and they’re succeeding at it.”

Review finds nothing went wrong with 911 service There is nothing wrong with Kamloops’ 911 system. That’s the word from Kamloops Fire Rescue Chief Neill Moroz after an investigation into the response to a Nov. 3 fire at a North Shore home. Moroz told KTW the investigation — which involved the Kelowna regional 911-dispatch centre, KFR’s own fire dispatch centre and service providers like Telus and Shaw — showed at least one person misdialed 911 in the moments after fire broke out at a home on Stewart Avenue. “All the records show that, at the very beginning, 911 was misdialed,” Moroz said, adding the caller likely pressed another number on his or her phone

before hitting 9-1-1. “The first call that was dialled correctly came into the [dispatch] centre, was answered in four seconds, dispatched in 11 seconds and we were on-scene four minutes and four seconds later.” Moroz acknowledged the fact that more than one 911 caller received a message saying the system was busy. He said the first busy tone lasted just over 20 seconds, after which an operator picked up. The second caller who received a busy tone hung up after 22 seconds. “A delay of 22 seconds is not something I’m concerned about,” Moroz said. “It’s well within what we’re trying to do.” Investigators believe the fire, which gutted the home of a family of six and killed a pet cat, was caused by faulty electrical wiring.

Son not criminally responsible for dad’s death By Tim Petruk STAFF REPORTER
tim@kamloopsthisweek.com
A 19-year-old Kamloops man charged with the seconddegree murder of his father has been found not criminally responsible by way of a mental disorder. Josh Steel’s fate was decided on Thursday, Nov. 8, by B.C. Supreme Court Justice Hope Hyslop after a one-day trial that included evidence he was experiencing hallucinations prior to beating his father, 63-year-old Phil Steel, to death in September 2011. Steel will be released into the custody of the B.C. Review Board, which will determine this treatment and future path. The board is an independent tribunal established under the Criminal Code of Canada. It has the power to hold hearings to make and review dispositions (orders) where people charged with criminal offences have been given verdicts of not criminally responsible on account of mental disorder or unfit to stand trial on account of mental disorder, by a court. During Steel’s trial, court heard he had been presented a choice by “the devil.”
Either he kill his dad — and, in the process, be given control of the world — or do nothing and watch as he and his family die slow, painful deaths. Steel had been experiencing psychotic hallucinations for a period of months before the murder. He was put on medication after a visit to Royal Inland Hospital in February, but stopped taking his pills after a doctor in the Philippines told him they were not necessary. That was in March 2011. After a period of improvement, Steel’s mental state began to deteriorate and he was experiencing hallucinations and having conversations with the devil, even believing his television was sending him messages. Steel’s mother was concerned when, in late August, her son began spending hours on end in his bed, staring at the ceiling. He would not join her for bike rides or walks and refused to leave the house for work. Steel also spoke about receiving messages from the TV show Friends. In particular, he said a character on the show told him to turn a light switch on and off 11 times or risk seeing his family
“get hurt.” On Sept. 10, 2011, two days before Steel killed his father, police were called to the family’s home for a reported disturbance. Steel had apparently been fighting with his parents and eventually left the house and began smashing car windows in the neighbourhood. When police arrived, he tried to run away, but was arrested a short time later. Court heard Mounties were concerned about Steel’s mental health. Defence lawyer Jordan Watt said police made notes about “unusual verbal sounds” Steel was making while in custody. Steel was checked out by a mental-health counsellor in jail, but eventually released on a promise to appear in court. Court heard testimony from psychiatrist Sam Iskander, who examined Josh Steel at a Lower Mainland forensic hospital after his arrest. Iskander said he has provisionally diagnosed Steel with schizophrenia, but said it could prove to be schizo-affective disorder. He said Steel’s symptoms were likely intensified by marijuana use.

Actually, councillor, this is exactly why council is here
I
T WOULD APPEAR THE Kamloops Cadet Society will be able to repair the furnace in its aging Brian Avenue hall, after all — no thanks to a Scrooge-like city council. What city council refused to do via a pittance of a loan the community has done via a Kamloops Daily News-led fundraising drive to find the $4,000 or so needed by the society to fix its furnace before winter arrives and allow some good kids to keep doing good things. The society’s need resonated with common folk who had the wisdom to see that donating such a small amount now can and will result in untold savings later in the form of boys and girls being moulded into fine young men and women who will give back in value far exceeding the initial $4,000. When society director Linda Ingalls approached city council, she was asking for a loan — a loan, to be paid back, not a grant, not a handout, but a loan — to cover half of what was needed to replace the furnace. The society was seeking the loan from the city so it could qualify for a Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund grant, which requires groups to have half the funding for projects already committed. The improvement fund is a twoyear national program that has set aside $150 million to rehabilitate and improve existing community infrastructure across Canada. The cadet society was trying to access a paltry $4,000 in the $46 million portion allocated for Western Canada via Western Economic
CHRISTOPHER FOULDS Newsroom
MUSINGS Diversification Canada. “If we cannot heat this building, then we will not be able to let the cadets use the building,” Ingalls wrote in a letter to council. “If they cannot use the building, then they will not have a place to use for the next training year.” The building is used nearly every day by 150 cadets between the ages of nine and 18. That the majority of city council could not see the value in the request boggles the mind. That it took citizens of Kamloops to reach into their pockets and meet and exceed the cadet society’s need is shameful. We can debate myriad expenditures at city hall. Communities in Bloom, sister-city agreements and sending various councillors to various conferences are some that come to mind, all of which can be rightfully debated. But, helping the cadet society keep great kids doing great things for a loan amount less than that of one city councillor’s travel budget? Ridiculous. The rationale for the refusal was weak.
Coun. Nancy Bepple argued approving the loan could result in a precedent as other organizations could then follow, coming to council to ask for loans to repair their facilities. It might. But, it’s council’s job to determine, on a case-by-case basis, the fate of contingency-fund loan requests. Coun. Tina Lange argued council does not exist to entertain such requests. “This isn’t what we’re here for,” she said. “We’re not the bank. It’s a no-interest loan that will be paid back, but there’s other places where they should be looking for that money.” Actually, this is precisely what council is here for — to help local organizations when they are in need. Lange’s bewildering interpretation of the role of city council echoed her baffling comments last year, when she opposed a motion to place a covenant on the proposed parkade, to inform future councils that council in 2011 supported a height limit on the structure. “To me, it would be a waste. I don’t want to presuppose what the community of Kamloops would want 10 years from now,” Lange said at the time. Again, with all due respect, that is precisely what elected representatives at city hall do — presuppose what the community of Kamloops might want 10 years from now. Council is also here to recognize rational requests that benefit the community without unfairly burdening the taxpayer. With the Kamloops Cadet Society, city council failed miserably. editor@kamloopsthisweek.com
Marijuana reform advocates hope the decision by voters in Washington and Colorado last week to legalize and tax marijuana sales will add momentum to their push for change in B.C. While it’s not yet clear if the U.S. federal government will allow stateby-state legalization of recreational marijuana use — other states already allow medical marijuana sales — the vote has huge implications here. Washington state estimates it would collect $560 million in the first year from a planned 25-per-cent tax on the sale of licensed, regulated marijuana through authorized stores. If enacted, this could also cause a partial collapse of B.C.’s estimated $7-billion-ayear illegal pot industry, as growers relocate to the U.S. to avoid the need to smuggle. Recently, the Union of B.C. Municipalities passed a resolution calling for marijuana to be decriminalized. They’d rather pot be regulated and taxed instead, much like alcohol. The U.S. votes are a progressive move toward responsible marijuana use. It’s time for B.C. to take a similar step toward decriminalization, if not legalization of marijuana. The potential tax revenue and the opportunity to reduce law enforcement costs, and help unclog our court system is too much to pass up. The poll results south of the border sent a message that U.S. drug policies are not working. As Canada’s drug policies follow the U.S. closely, it means ours aren’t working either — it’s time for a change. Sensible B.C., a campaign headed by B.C. marijuana activist and medical pot dispenser Dana Larsen, wants to follow in the footsteps of both Washington campaigners and B.C.’s successful anti-HST drive. The group aims to get enough signatures on a petition to force a provincial referendum on marijuana decriminalization, through B.C.’s Recall and Initiative Act. The proposed Sensible Policing Act would block B.C. police from spending time or resources on searches, seizures or arrests for simple cannabis possession. It’s time we take our antiquated marijuana laws and follow the lead of our neighbours to the south and let the people decide if it’s time for a change. — Victoria News

Much good work has been done for homeless

A selection of comments on KTW stories, culled online
Re: Concert review: Trenchers drenched in Marianas music: “I think the real controversy should be whether or not parents are letting their young kids (especially girls) go to this kind of show. “If you listen to any of these bands’ albums, many songs are what iTunes calls ‘explicit’ in big red letters and often speak of alcohol and girls taking off their clothes. “To say these bands should leave that kind of thing backstage is not necessarily fair just because there are young fans in the audience. “If parents didn’t want their children listening to music with that kind of profanity, there should be no reason to buy these kids tickets to their concerts.” — posted by Carlin Bolt
Re: Story: Cadets get cold shoulder from city council: “The cadets is an excellent organization for kids to belong to. “The cadet movement has been as much a part of Canadian history as anything else. “For the city to invest even $4,000 into this program would have an invaluable return as they would then be a part of the success to our future.” — posted by Rick Tolhurst
Editor: Re: Dale Bass’s column of Nov. 8 (‘Rather than count homeless, we should confront apathy’): What Bass refers to as stunning information — that more than three-quarters of respondents to a KTW online poll indicated they will not be helping homeless people — I find quite exciting. What this poll reveals is that almost 25 per cent of Kamloopsians who responded said they will be helping the homeless population — and that number is staggering.
I would like to remind Bass it was just a few short years ago (12, to be exact) that, as a member of the social planning council, I found out pretty much nobody was helping, other than social agencies. I was one of the original members of the Kamloops Working Group on Homelessness and we were tasked with trying to build bridges with the private sector, partnering in a strategy to help, and we were met with, “It’s not my problem” or, ‘Just get those bums off the street.” We have come a long way in the last decade.
The business community has taken a sense of ownership of the issue and the community as a whole understands it has a role to play in alleviating the problem. The recent City of Kamloops’ citizensatisfaction survey even indicates social issues are a lower priority than they were a few years ago. There is obviously a lot of good work being done by these 25 per centers. There is still a lot work ahead of us and I am looking at this as a glass half-full. Ray Jolicoeur Kamloops
Selective anarchy as practised by ruling class
These TRU students are crossing Summit Drive the safe and legal way. However, too many students are risking injury and death by jaywalking, according to KTW reader Chengcheng Wang. KTW file photo
An accident waiting to happen Editor: Frequently, some TRU students jaywalk across Summit Drive when they walk to or from school. The main reason those students cross Summit is because they live in Upper College Heights or somewhere around Dalgleish Drive. It is easy to take a shortcut across Summit instead of following the sidewalk on McGill Road and using the crosswalk. Although there is a sign that warns of a $121 fine for jaywalking, people still cross Summit. I believe most people do not jaywalk. People start jaywalking when they see others, especially their friends, jaywalking in front of them. We know it is dangerous to do such a thing, but we feel less guilty when it becomes a habit or we do it with other people. With more people crossing the

ingridpf@shaw.ca kamloopsrealestatewithingrid.ca
street, the chance of having an accident on Summit is increasing. I think there are two ways to avoid disaster: Stop people crossing the street to help people to cross the street. Stopping people from jaywalking is easier. In this situation, the road sign has been powerless. Barricading the street to prevent jaywalking is a good idea. When people find the street is too difficult to cross, they will walk up to the crosswalk. The way to help people to cross the street is much more difficult. We may build an overpass across Summit. which will cost a lot of money. Regardless, the City of Kamloops should do something before a traffic accident happens. Editor: I would like to help dispel a commonly held myth that the wealthier folks in our society, also known as the ruling class, would like to see governments play a smaller role in our country. What they really want is for governments to only provide the services they need. What we typically hear from these folks is that governments should really only be in the business of policing, the military and the court system. That fact shouldn’t come as any surprise because it is these three branches of government that are designed to ensure the wealthy will have their property and privileges protected. The police ensure their vast personal and corporate wealth cannot be endangered without severe consequences. The military ensures any semblance of civil unrest to challenge the status quo will be quickly and violently repressed. And, the courts ensure those with the deepest pockets can afford to keep their opponents mired in legal challenges until they run out of money. The courts are also increasingly responsible for ensuring innocent folks who can’t afford the costs of a good defence will plead guilty to lesser charges in order to escape the real risk of being convicted of a much greater crime, or in order to keep their family from being bankrupted by legal costs. What the ruling class really wants is for everyone to pay for services that best protect the ruling class’s interests while eliminating services that are needed by the masses. You could call them selective anarchists — a so-called law-and-order agenda to protect those with the most property and anarchy for everyone else. Peter Kerek Kamloops

Number of vehicle break-ins in Kamloops plummets The number of vehicles being broken into in Kamloops is the lowest it’s been in a decade, according to numbers recently released by the provincial government. ICBC’s statistics for reported vehicle break-ins show just 89 such incidents in the Tournament Capital in the first half of 2012 — down more than 25 per cent from 2011 and nearly 85 per cent since 2003. Last year, ICBC received 120 reports of vehicle break-ins in Kamloops between January and June, up from 103 in 2010 and 95 in 2009. In 2003, there were 569 reports between January and June. The number stayed above the 300-mark until 2008, when it dropped suddenly to 156. The Kamloops RCMP put in place its prolific-offender management program —
POLICE BEAT which measures thefts from vehicles as one of four major indicators — in 2007. Merritt also saw a drastic decrease in thefts from vehicles, according to the figures.
In the fist six months of 2012, ICBC received three reports of vehicle break-ins, compared with 14 over the same time the previous year.
Shed theft nets motor Logan Lake RCMP are asking for the public’s help in finding the person behind the theft of an outboard
motor from a Lac Le Jeune shed. Police say that, some time between Nov. 4 and Nov. 9, the shed at a cabin at the lake was burgled, with the thief making off with a Minn Kota electric outboard engine, which is described as being 30 inches, with 30 pounds of thrust.
Anybody with information on the theft and the whereabouts of the stolen engine is asked to contact Logan Lake RCMP at 250523-6222 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222TIPS (8477).

Seniors’ agency head says more diligence needed X From A1
Melvin stressed the fact the seemingly high failure rate is due to the fact all of those tested were determined to have some sort of cognitive or health-related impairment. “It’s not a very high [pass] rate because these people are people who have been identified by their physician as having a cognitive impairment,” she said. “It’s a way of assessing somebody’s cognitive abilities as they relate to driving.” The flagging system puts a lot of faith in the doctors conducting the initial tests. According to the head of a Kamloops seniors’ agency, that’s not necessarily a good thing. Brenda Prevost, executive director of the Kamloops Centre for Seniors Information, said she knows there are elderly drivers on local
streets who have no business being behind a steering wheel. In one instance, she said, a local woman had three driving accidents in a one-year span due to reduced eyesight. When she went for her mandatory testing, the doctor gave her the allclear. “I think the doctor
still needs to be more diligent to say, ‘Your driving days are over,’” Prevost said. “It should be a medical decision.” But, Prevost said, medical testing should not be mandatory. “I think there should be a test, yes, but I think if a person is doing well, they shouldn’t
have to be tested,” she said. “What’s age got to do with it? It’s health.” That sentiment is echoed by Al Dobbs, an Edmonton doctor who worked as the chief scientific officer in the creation of the DriveABLE program in Alberta in the 1990s. “We’ve had drivers who are over 100 years
of age who have looked good,” he said. “Not many, but it’s possible. But, we’ve had drivers who are 18 who you would not want out on the road. It’s not age, although, as we get older, we’re more likely to have a problem
G
affecting our ability to drive.” According to Learned, the issue of elderly drivers is only going to get more attention. “It’s a really tough argument, but it’s a relevant argument to have
because of the growing senior population,” he said. “There’s going to be a whole wave of the boomer drivers that are going to be out there — the roads will be filled with a higher percentage of older drivers.”

Seeking shelter from the cold Program in effect in time for below-zero temps By Andrea Klassen
With the mercury falling, Kamloops shelters will see more and more people coming in from the cold for the night. Dave Eagles/KTW
STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
With overnight temperatures still in the single digits, organizers at Kamloops’ cold weather shelter weren’t expecting a busy start when they opened their program on Nov. 4. But, in its first two nights of operation, the Out of the Cold program at St. Paul’s Cathedral is already seeing the kind of guest numbers it typically gets when the mercury plummets to below zero. “It’s kind of shocking because it’s not that cold out yet and, typically, our shelter’s more for the people that usually sleep outside and then come in when it’s really cold,” program co-ordinator Sasha Smode said. Out of the Cold runs Sundays and Wednesdays at St. Paul’s Cathedral, 360 Nicola Street, and on any other night when the temperature drops below -10 C. The shelter runs from 7 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. and provides guests with a hot dinner and breakfast, as well as a place to socialize and sleep. On the first Sunday of the season, 18 people showed up for the evening meal and 12 stayed
at the shelter for the full night. Because the shelter locks its door at 10 p.m., Smode said some guests choose to grab a few hours of sleep and leave for the night. “It’s a lot of new faces,” she said. “Typically, I know the majority of our guests by name.” Smode said there seems to be more elderly and young people using the program, which is organized by the St. Vincent de Paul Society, as well as more women. “Typically, we get way more males than females but, this year, too, there were more females that have been coming in and actually staying,” she said. “It’s a change.” For the past several years, numbers at the shelter were on the decline. In 2009, the average number of people using

Out of the Cold was 17, compared to 14 in 2010 and about 13 in 2011. Smode said she’s not sure why demand for the shelter seems to be starting earlier this year, but Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) executive director Doug Sage said the program may be picking up people who can’t find a bed at Emerald Centre. The 35-bed emergency shelter on Victoria Street West — operating in the former Rendezvous Hotel location — is consistently full, Sage said. “I think the reason they’re seeing these people is that there’s no room with us, so my hunch is that it’s going to be a busy year for
everybody.” Sage said the CMHA shelter is also seeing a number of new faces, but it’s not clear if they are transients moving through the city on their way to warmer locales or permanent residents. He also suspects that, as Kamloops’ homeless population ages, people who have chosen to sleep outdoors as much as possible in the past are starting to come in. “The older they are, the more difficult it is to be in colder weather,” Sage said. Environment Canada’s forecast for this weekend calls for much colder temperatures, with lows of -4 C to -7 C expected on Saturday, Nov. 10, and Sunday, Nov. 11. With a potentially busy winter looming, Smode is calling for more volunteers to help out with Out of the Cold, as well as donations of winter boots, gloves, hats and socks. Donations can be dropped off at St. Paul’s Cathedral downtown or at the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 168 Briar Ave. To volunteer, contact Maybelle at 250-3764161.

Mounties have said Alhedaib, 28, punched Almotairi, who struck back with a pool cue. RCMP Staff Sgt. Grant Learned said the pool cue went through the victim’s eye and penetrated his brain, causing severe trauma. Almotairi was released the following day after a bail hearing with a justice of the peace. He was ordered to

The backpack project, originally started by now-retired Dufferin teacher Donna Greenlay, has playing a key part in helping orphaned Russian children and street kids. Stuffing their packs are students Kennadee Wilkie (left) and Brooke Shank. For 13 years, Greenlay and her family have been collecting hundreds of backpacks for lessfortunate kids in Russia through their church and an organization called New Manna Ministries. Blazer Browns By Marty Hastings STAFF REPORTER
sports@kamloopsthisweek.com
H
OWARD AND FREDA BROWN have been married for almost 38 years and never had children of their own — but they adopted the Kamloops Blazers. “It’s a beautiful relationship,” said Howard, who, along with Freda, first started volunteering for the Western Hockey League club in 1992. “We adopted the Blazers and, for some reason, they adopted us.” None of the work they do — locking down the building, setting up tables, organizing ushers and doormen, baking goodies for scouts and media, helping the
Blazer Booster Club get set up and doing whatever is asked of them by the Blazer office staff — is glorified, but those behind the scenes know how much they contribute. “They virtually dedicate their lives to helping the hockey club,” said Dave Chyzowski, the Blazers’ director of sales and marketing. “They’re not only volunteers, they’re really genuine people.” “I think it’s really important that we make sure they continue to be a huge part of our game nights because, without them, I don’t know if we’d be as successful off the ice.” Howard and Freda — both of whom are now employed by the city and work most concerts and shows that
come to Interior Savings Centre — go above and beyond the call of duty, as is the case with many who volunteer or work for the Blue and Orange. No more is that evident than in the press box, where home-baked goodies mysteriously appear — and magically disappear from their container before game’s end. “The Blazers are our family up here in Kamloops and we just love working for them,” said Freda, who was perched high above the ice in the press box during an interview with KTW, the Zamboni droning on below. Freda talked about how Crohn’s disease forced her into a threeyear hiatus from working at ISC. X See LIFE A16

Howard, who also manages Lyons Landscaping and Garden Centre, joined his wife in temporary retirement from their work with the Blazers. “We do absolutely everything together,” Howard said. “It’s just the way we are. We’ve always worked together. We do this together. We volunteer together. We’re buddies.” They survived just fine away from the Blazers, but felt a void in their lives. The club asked Freda to come back when she felt up to it and provided her with a less-taxing role, which sees her mostly help the media in the press box. Among her duties is tending to the popcorn machine — no small task, considering its fame around the WHL. Just ask CKNW’s Dan Russell, who wrote about the tasty intermission treat on Twitter: “Not a popcorn lover, but Giants
and Blazers have the 2 best “press box popcorn servings” that I’ve ever had in WHL. #fresh.” Freda used to cook pre-game and postgame meals for the Blazers’ on-ice stars, but that’s one duty she is no longer able to handle. The Browns’ roles have changed over the years. Howard started on a volunteer basis as a doorman and has moved to the top of the game-day staff ranks. Freda’s disease has forced her to scale back a little bit. One thing, however, has always remained the same — the couple’s love for the Blazers, their staff and their volunteers. “This isn’t work,” Howard said. “I love this. This is my second home. “I don’t even know where we would go from here if we couldn’t do this.” Luckily for them, there are no plans in the works to remove
the Browns from their posts. “We will be here
as long as the Blazers will let us stay here,” Freda said.

TRU places fourth at nationals in P.E.I. The TRU WolfPack women’s soccer team is not bringing any hardware home from the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Championship in P.E.I. TRU was beaten 1-0 by the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology Ooks in the bronze-medal match on Saturday, Nov. 10. The WolfPack also placed fourth at nationals last year. The bronze-medal tilt was played in extremely windy conditions. “It’s disappointing,” WolfPack head coach Tom McManus said. “You come to a match like this and you are playing so well, then you have to play in a stupid wind like this. “The ball was out of bounds more than it was in play today.” In the post-tournament award ceremony, first-year forward
TOURNAMENT CAPITAL SPORTS
Kelsey Martin of Kamloops was named to the all-tournament team. “It was a good experience to be here,” Martin said. ‘It was more about the team, but I think the two goals I scored yesterday [a 4-0 win over F.X. Garneau] helped me being chosen.” TRU was awarded the Fair Play trophy for the second straight year.
Okanagan dreams The junior boys’ volleyball teams from Norkam and Sa-Hali secondaries qualified for the Okanagan Valley Championship, held on Friday, Nov. 16, and Saturday, Nov. 17, at a yet-to-be-deter-
mined location. NorKam’s Saints beat Sa-Hali’s Sabres in straight sets (2510, 25-11) in the final of the West Zone Junior Boys Volleyball Championship, held at NorKam on Wednesday, Nov. 7. Taylor Labonte led the Saints, notching 17 kills, three blocks and two service aces. Evan Cave also contributed for NorKam, adding 14 kills, four blocks and 12 digs. Connor McKenzie racked up 41 set assists.
Sabres survive The Sa-Hali Sabres came out on top at the junior girls’ West Zone volleyball championships, held last week at Sa-Hali secondary. The home team downed Westsyde secondary in straight sets (27-25, 25-20) in the final and clinched a berth at the Okanagan Championships, held
this month in Kelowna. Merritt secondary topped Westsyde in three sets in a challenge match and claimed a place at the Okanagans.
Blazers battered Oh, how the mighty have fallen. The Kamloops Blazers have lost four games in a row and five of their last six after going on a franchisebest 14-game winning streak. Kamloops fell 3-1 to the Portland Winterhawks on Sunday, Nov. 11. The Blazers lost 4-2 to the TriCity Americans in Kennewick, Wash., on Saturday, Nov. 10, one night after losing 5-2 to the Chiefs in Spokane. Kamloops will play seven consecutive games at Interior Savings Centre. Next up are the Portland Winterhawks on Friday, Nov. 16.

2013 BC SENIORS GAMES
cribbage By Sarah MacMillan SPECIAL TO KTW editor@kamloopsthisweek.com
Gloria Gartner is a card-playing Barriere resident who is looking forward to the BC Seniors Games coming to Kamloops in August 2013. “We certainly plan on [participating],” Gartner said, “especially when it is in our own backyard.” Gartner is the BC Senior Games Zone 8 event co-ordinator for cribbage, a card game she became interested when she and her husband lived in Northern Canada. “When we lived up North, before the time of televisions, cribbage became our entertainment,” she said. Cribbage is a card game that can be played with varying numbers of players, but within the BC Seniors Games, it’s played with two pairs of two with a standard 52-card deck. The games are divided into flights and set up in a triple roundrobin format, meaning each pair competes against one another three separate times. The objective of a crib game is to score more points than the other team. When the cards are first dealt, each player receives five cards and selects four they wish to keep and one they wish to put face down into the crib, a pile that is later used by the dealer. The player to the dealer’s left then cuts the deck and reveals the starter card. Each player then lays a card down, stating out loud the total value of the placed cards.
For example, if the first person lays a five, they say, “Five.” If the next person lays an eight, they say, “Thirteen.” The cards are played until the cumulative value nears or hits 31 without going over. This continues until all cards in the players’ hands have been played. Points are than calculated in each player’s hand by using the held cards to create different card combinations that total 15. Points are also given for having runs and pairs. Though there are many things to remember in the game, Gartner says she does not find the game mentally demanding — but that may be because of her outlook. ““One must remember it is a game and, in all games, someone will win and someone will lose,” she said. For Gartner, though, it’s not the winning that makes the game enjoyable, but rather the unpredictability of the cards and, therefore, the game. “I can honestly say that no two games are the same,” Gartner said. “It helps to get good cards, but it is also what you do with what you are dealt.” For more information on cribbage and to participate in the BC Seniors Games, call Gartner at 250672-5239 or send her an email at gegartner@xplornet.com. More information is also available on the BC Seniors Games website at bcseniorsgames.org.
The Cold War is back.
Kamloops will host the 2013 BC Seniors Games from Aug. 20 to Aug. 24, 2013. The city is expecting about 3,500 athletes, ages 55 and up, to attend the Games, which will feature more than 20 events, ranging from cribbage to ice hockey. KTW continues its biweekly feature page, with each page focusing on one of the Games’ events.

EAN MEILLEUR GREW UP LISTENING TO THE MUSIC OF ELTON JOHN. Levon, Your Song, Tiny Dancer — the songs of those early years, the nascent part of John’s long career. When Meilleur steps up to sing Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Burn Down the Mission or Saturday Night’s Alright next weekend, he won’t be mimicking the British singer. He won’t be wearing funny glasses or dressed in outrageous costumes. “You’ll be sitting there and you’ll remember the tune but it will be different,” said Meilleur, who has spent the past quarter century touring the country as part of the Jeans ‘N Classics (JNC) series of shows. Created to combine rock singers with symphony orchestras, JNC will do its Madmen Across the Water — The Music of Elton John with the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra on Friday, Nov. 16, and Saturday, Nov. 17, at Sagebrush Theatre. The show starts with Meilleur on vocals and guitar, with Donald Paulton on piano, Mitch Taylor on Bass and Paul DeLong on drums. The orchestra and KSO Chorus join for the second half. Meilleur — Wisconsin-born, with a stop in Detroit before the family moved across the border to Ontario — said the JNC concept, developed by Peter Brennan, a guitarist and music director, “fit like a glove” for his musical desires. Brennan, born in Britain and influenced by the music of The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Gilbert and Sullivan, “takes rock music that’s been around a long time and does it differently.” With songs that don’t have much of an orchestral background, he creates it. “It rejuvenates the music,” Meilleur said. “It takes it to another level.” Once a genre of music or a particular singer or band is chosen, the group that will be performing works meets with Brennan to personalize the set list, sharing ideas and songs. The Kamloops show is one of two featuring John’s music. The other doesn’t

involve a choir, Meilleur said, and the songs chosen are somewhat different. The Kamloops show will include: Funeral for a Friend, Love Lies Bleeding, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, I Guess That’s Why They Call it the Blues, Rocket Man, Daniel, Honky Cat, Your Song, Take Me To The Pilot, Tiny Dancer, Circle of Life, Burn Down the Mission and Saturday Night’s Alright. It ends with Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me. Meilleur doesn’t have a favourite song; he said it depends on how the night is going and the vibes he’s feeling.
Tiny Dancer is one of his favourites, though, he said. It’s important the orchestras not be ignored, Meilleur said. “We try and get songs that we can really feature the orchestra with so it’s not just the band with an occasional violin flurry,” He said. The challenge with the John show is to ensure certain inflections, breaks — moments in the music that are classic John signature sounds — “have to be there because Elton had them. “But we don’t clone the artist,” Meilleur said. “We interpret and celebrate the music.
“It’s not often you can go with an orchestra and sing songs that have been around for 35 or 40 years in your own voice.” The JNC bands aren’t tribute bands, however. “It’s fun. People come and expect to see us dress up like them. “We don’t. We play the music the way we hear it — quite soulful and listenable.” The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. each night. Tickets are at the Kamloops Live Box Office, 1025 Lorne St., 250-374-5483, kamloopslive.ca.

Are you tired of feeling saggy, lumpy, pinched or strained? Well you’re not alone. As you’ve probably seen on Oprah or read in women’s magazines, over 80 per cent of all women wear the wrong size bra. Here’s where Barb Chapman, the Bra Lady, comes in.
Chapman is coming to KAMLOOPS ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 29TH to outfit you with the best possible bra for your body. Chapman said she will be seeing clients on a oneon-one basis, explaining the benefits of good bras and measuring their bodies properly. “Most women just want to find a good-fitting bra that’s not uncomfortable,” Chapman said. “What they don’t realize is that a good support bra is also important for blood circulation and enhanced lymph drainage.” Chapman has over 200 bra sizes available for ordering, ranging from 30AA to 52KK. It’s likely that you’ll fit somewhere between those sizes. Elantra adds sporty two-door coupe LORNE DRURY First DRIVE
N
ICHE IS THE NEW NORMAL THESE DAYS IN THE AUTOMOTIVE MARKETPLACE. Years ago, the cost of the research and development needed to bring out a new model meant automakers were choosy about what vehicles they introduced. Today, however, automakers are finding spinning off several models from one platform is the way to go — it’s all about economies of scale and niche vehicles are becoming much more common. Even relatively modest sales of a model can still be profitable because the flexible assembly lines allow manufacturers to produce more than one model at a time.
Take, for example, Hyundai and its bestselling Elantra.
Hyundai Elantra Coupe 2013 at a glance Body style: Compact sports coupe. Drive method: Front-engine, front-wheel drive. Engine: 1.8-litre DOHC four-cylinder (148 hp, 131 lb/ft of torque). Fuel economy: Six-speed manual, 7.2/5.2/100 km city/highway; six-speed automatic 7.6/5.3L/100 km city/highway. Cargo: 420 litres. Tow rating: Not recommended. Price: GLS manual, $19,949; GLS automatic, $21,149; SE automatic, $25,199. Website: hyundaicanada.ca.
It has not just one or two, but three versions of the Elantra now on the market. The sedan, which is manufactured in the U.S. at a plant in Alabama, has been a huge success for the South Korean firm, winning both North American and Canadian Car of the Year honours in 2012. Hyundai also had an Elantra wagon variant sold in North America (called the Touring edition) that was getting near the end of its shelf life, so it brought out a replacement — the
Elantra GT — for 2013, based on the i30 model sold predominantly in Europe. The GT is more of a crossover than a wagon — and all this vehicle has done so far is win Best New Small Car over $21,000 in the recent Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) 2013 Car of the Year voting. It is now up for the same Canadian Car of the Year honours its sedan sibling won last year. But, Hyundai was not done. It has added a third
model to the Elantra lineup for 2013 — the Elantra Coupe, built in Korea at the same plant as the GT. In Canada, sales of the Coupe are not expected to be huge (perhaps five per cent of the Elantra total), but it offers another variant that will bring new customers into the Hyundai fold, competing against cars like the Honda Civic Coupe, Kia Forte Koup and the new Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S sporty coupes. The Elantra Coupe is similar to the sedan mechanically, with the
same 1.8-litre fourcylinder engine that makes 148 horsepower and 131 pound-feet of torque. Standard is a sixspeed manual transmission with a six-speed automatic a $1,200 option. The “Nu” DOHC 16-valve engine is not new, but is improved with enhanced dual continuously Variable Valve timing (D-CVVT) that improves fuel economy and burns cleaner to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. The Elantra Coupe is built in Korea at the
same plant as the GT and has a suspension featuring MacPherson struts up front and torsion beam at the rear. This is similar to the sedan, but the suspension has been tuned for a sportier ride. Since I didn’t drive the two back-to-back it’s difficult to really compare both cars, but I didn’t find the ride in the coupe overly firm or rough. The car handled well in urban and rural environments. X See SPORTY B8

Carbon monoxide prevention Natural gas is used safely and reliably in homes across B.C.
Even the GLS is well-equipped, with features like a power sunroof, heated front seats, six-speaker audio system, air conditioning, 16-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, Bluetooth hands-free phone and power windows/door locks. The SE gets 17-inch
alloys, leather upholstery, aluminum pedals, intelligent key system, automatic climate control and a navigation system with seven-inch touchscreen and rearview camera and an upgraded 360watt sound system. The compact segment is where it’s at in Canada and Hyundai
has the market covered with three different versions of the Elantra. Hyundai has found a niche market with the Elantra Coupe, appealing to those who want a sportier, twodoor look rather than the family sedan. There’s something for everyone now in the Elantra lineup.

With a wheelbase the same as the sedan and with a light steering feel, the coupe is easy to manoeuvre in tight parking lots. For a vehicle priced under $26,000, the Elantra Coupe has a nice-looking interior with room for four adults. Getting in and out of the back seat is made easier by the generous fore and aft travel of the front seats and rear headroom is fine, even for a sixfooter like me. Rear-seat legroom is on par with the sedan version. Up front, seating is comfortable, although I would have preferred an inch or two more of length in the bottom seat cushions. The Elantra Coupe’s 148-horsepower engine is no match for the 201 horsepower of the Honda Civic Si Coupe, but the car does move out nicely from a stop, albeit a bit noisily until speed is generated. Hyundai has revised its fuel-economy numbers for the Elantra Coupe. They now read 7.2/5.2/6.3 L/100 km hwy/city/combined for the six-speed manual and 7.6/5.3/6.6 for the automatic. The trunk is roomy, with 420 litres of cargo space and the 60/40-split rear seats fold down for added space if needed. Styling wise, the Coupe mimics the sedan, with the same “Fluidic Sculpture” design language, featuring a hexagonal grille and upwardflowing double character lines along the side that arc up to the rear, with its integrated spoiler. Two trim levels are offered: GLS and the SE model which I tested. Prices start at $19,949, rising to $25,199 for the SE, which only comes with an automatic. The GLS with automatic is $21,149.

AUTOMARKET Mazda heads for the hills EXPERIENCE LIFE ACROSS ALL TERRAIN
Mazda Canada has announced a new partnership with Canada-Snowboard, the official governing body for competitive snowboarding in Canada. It will also back Snowboard Jamboree, host to the FIS Snowboard World Championships, a 12-day snowboard and youth lifestyle event featuring world-class athletes competing for gold in six disciplines. The partnerships will see Mazda Canada become the official vehicle of the Canadian National Snowboard Team through the 2012-2013 season and the title sponsor for the upcoming FIS World Snowboard Championships, which includes the Half Pipe presenting partnership in Quebec City in January. The dynamic action, extreme agility and
youthful appeal that the sport of snowboarding embodies is a fitting match for the cutting-edge technology and fun-to-drive characteristics that Mazda injects into each of its vehicles. “We are thrilled to be the official vehicle provider for the Canadian National Snowboard Team and see this as the perfect avenue to support Canadian athletes in a sport that embodies so many parallel qualities to Mazda vehicles, said Krista Kelly, national manager, brand communications at Mazda Canada. “Their focus and dedication to the sport is the same way we feel about Mazda vehicles, and to share that passion is a great opportunity for us.

J
AMES BOND. Devastatingly handsome, well-mannered and well-dressed, with an exquisite taste in beautiful women, fine liquors and fast cars. Those are all characteristics that you share with the famous 007, correct? One thing Bond has that you may not, however, is deep pockets. So, if an Aston Martin DB5 doesn’t exactly meet with your bank manager’s approval, you’ll need to go with Plan B.
A United Kingdom classiccar insurance specialist has compiled a list of alternative Bond cars without the hefty price tag. Here are the alternatives with UK auction prices in good condition. • 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 – Diamonds Are Forever ($25,993): The 1971-1973 Mustang was arguably the most -controversial of the first-generation Mustangs. Still great-looking but quite a bit larger than its predecessors — as was Sean Connery in
1971’s Diamonds Are Forever. You could argue that both Connery and the Mustang had put on a bit of a middle age spread. • 1961 Sunbeam Alpine Series II – Dr. No ($15,700): The Sunbeam Alpine was said to be the only sports car available to the producers of Dr. No when they were shooting in Jamaica. A little softer and more luxurious than a Triumph or an MG of the day, the Alpine was stylish and well built.

• 1974 AMC Hornet – The Man with the Golden Gun ($1,914): AMC stepped up in a big way when The Man with the Golden Gun was in production, with some very prominent product placement. In the famous scene, Commander Bond commandeers a new Hornet from an AMC showroom in Hong Kong. Mayhem ensues. Not many AMCs of the era survived in part because Chrysler disposed of large numbers of spare parts after buying AMC. • 1981 Alfa Romeo GTV6 – Octopussy ($7,017): Alfa Romeos are great driver’s cars and the great stunt driver Remy Julienne put the new six-cylinder GT to good use in a chase scene in the movie Octopussy, after Bond swipes the car and heads off the detonation of a nuclear bomb. GTV6s are among the greatest collector-car bargains available now — a starter Ferrari for less than $8,000. • 1977 Lotus Esprit
S1 – The Spy Who Loved Me ($14,671): After the famous Aston Martin DB5, the white Lotus Esprit is probably the sexiest and most-recognized Bond car. In the movies, the Lotus was capable of transforming into a submarine and offing the helicopter henchwoman of the villain with missiles that shot out of the trunk. In real life, a bad Esprit is capable of doing villainous things to your bank account. Pay up for a good one. They’re surprisingly reasonable. • 1996 BMW Z3 – GoldenEye ($6,774): The little Z3 roadster was BMW’s entry into the convertible sports-car world. It did it with a bang, from a marketing standpoint, and this little bit of product placement into Pierce Brosnan’s debut as 007. Sales of the Z3 spiked and, even today, Z3s in the James Bond colors of blue and tan bring a little bit more on the used car market. • 1997 BMW 750 IL
– Tomorrow Never Dies ($6,299): BMW owned product placement in the Bond franchise during the early Brosnan era (strange to see a British spy driving a German car, but money talks). The Seven Series was and is the ultimate BMW executive sedan. This version was the last of the pretty ones before controversial stylist Chris Bangle remade

AUTOMARKET Nissan rear-camera innovation brings luxury features to 2013 Altima EXPERIENCE LIFE ACROSS ALL TERRAIN
Nissan will offer three features on the 2013 Altima that before were only seen on luxury models. The new 2013 Nissan Altima can come with “lane-departure warning,” a feature that warns a driver if the vehicle drifts from the lane. How? The specially developed rear camera is constantly scanning the roadway for lane markers.
If it detects the car leaving the confines of the lane, an icon lights up and an audible cue sounds. The 2013 Altima can also help the driver know more about his or her surroundings with “blind-spot warning.” This icon lights up to signal when a vehicle is detected in the vehicle’s blind spot area. If the warning is ignored and the driver attempts a
lane change by putting on their turn signal, a beeping cue also beings to sound. “Moving-object detection” is another perk available in this latest car from Nissan. When a driver puts the car in reverse, the rear camera scans the area behind the vehicle. If a moving object is detected in this area, a yellow frame appears around
the rear camera image in the centre-dash screen and a beeping prompt sounds. These features usually require additional sensors and cameras, but Nissan’s 2013 Altima does it all using only one camera. This first-of-its-kind innovation means the camera is equipped with a wide-angle lens to see more, and sophisticated software to accomplish more advanced functions.
Another world’s-first related to the new Altima is the self-cleaning capability that comes with this new camera. A drop of windshieldwiper cleaning solution is regularly carried from the front of the car to the back and released onto the camera lens. Then, an air compressor releases a burst of air to finish the cleaning process and dry the camera.
crew-seat crash tests, speed-brake testing, ultimate load tests, European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) windshield bird-strike testing, wind-tunnel icing tests and night-lighting testing. The company recently further completed the first in a series of remote testing to validate the HondaJet aircraft’s performance under extreme temperatures. Hot-weather flight tests were conducted in Yuma, Ariz., and included critical case tests for both aircraft systems and infrastructure such as hotfuel testing, fuselagestructure temperature validation and pow-

AUTOMARKET Corvette packs a punch
B13
EXPERIENCE LIFE ACROSS ALL TERRAIN
When the new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette arrives late next year, it will be powered by a technologically advanced, race-proven 6.2litre V8 delivering an estimated 450 horsepower and helping produce zero to 62 m.p.h. times in fewer than four seconds. The new Corvette LT1 engine, the first of the Gen 5 family of small-block engines, combines several advanced technologies, including direct injection, active fuel management and continuously variable valve timing to support an advanced combustion system. Output, performance, and fuel economy numbers will not be finalized until early next year. It should be the most fuelefficient Corvette ever, exceeding the 2013 EPA-estimated highway consumption of 26 miles per gallon, or around 9L/100 km/h.
Increased power and efficiency were made possible by an unprecedented level of analysis — including computational fluid dynamics — to optimize the combustion system, the directinjection fuel system, AFM and variable-valve timing systems that support it. More than 10-million hours of computational analysis were conducted on the engine program, including six-million hours (CPU time) dedicated to the advanced combustion system.
Direct injection is new to the engine architecture and is a primary contributor to its greater combustion efficiency by ensuring a more complete burn of the fuel in the air-fuel mixture. This is achieved by precisely controlling the mixture motion and fuel-injection spray pattern. The LT1 head features smaller combustion chambers designed to complement the volume of the unique topography of the pistons’ heads. The smaller chamber size and sculpted pistons produce an 11.5:1 compression ratio, while the head features large, straight and rectangular intake ports with a slight twist to enhance mixture motion. This is complemented by a reversal of the intake and exhaust valve positions, as compared to the previous engine design.
Aston Martin has always been preferred ride Even though Bond didn’t actually drive it, the car garnered the most screen time of any car in the movie (far more than Bond’s Aston Martin DBS), and Tracy drove it with the skill and verve of Bond himself. • 1980 Lotus Esprit Turbo – For Your Eyes Only ($18,338): Bond, Lotus and Lotus’ customers all thought the basic Esprit was in need of more power — and that’s precisely what the Esprit got in the form of an exhaust-driven turbocharger. It catapulted the car from a junior supercar to a real heavyweight capable of taking on the best from Italy without resorting to eight or 12 cylinders. Bond’s car was fitted with a rather extreme anti-theft/anti-tamper device. The car exploded when the villain’s henchman tried to break in. • 2002 Aston Martin Vanquish – Die Another Day ($103,665): The DB7 was a very nice car with a price tag that was competitive with the top of the line Mercedes SL of the day. The Vanquish was
Aston Martin’s return to true supercar status, so it was a natural that, when Bond returned to Aston Martin after several movies in the
woods with BMW, the Vanquish would be his ride. While anything but cheap, through the miracle of depreciation,
a car that once pushed $320,000 can now be had for about $100,000. Not bad for a true James Bond Aston Martin.

Mutrie quits as head of business association By Christopher Foulds KTW EDITOR editor@kamloopsthisweek.com
Peter Mutrie, manager of the North Shore Business Improvement Association (NSBIA), resigned at an association board meeting on Thursday, Nov. 8. “It’s time,” Mutrie told KTW. “It’s just time. My work there is done. I’ve brought what I could to the program.” Mutrie, the longtime public face of the association, attended the 7 a.m. board meeting and promptly announced his decision. “It was a shock,” administrator Dorothy Felling said. “Just when the meeting was being called to order, he announced his resignation. It totally caught me off-guard.” Mutrie cited “shifting human dynamics” in his decision to step
away from the position he has held for 12 years — though he declined comment when asked why he did not give the customary two weeks’ notice. “People see the world differently. I don’t want to hurt the organization and they don’t want to hurt me. It was a case of, ‘Let’s pick a time when we can both go on to new horizons.” The NSBIA’s existence — and, by extension, that of its manager and any staff — is one that is reviewed every five years by members of the association. It was last reviewed in September 2008, when 51 of 324 business properties opposed the NSBIA’s continuation. In order for the NSBIA mandate to be disbanded, 162 properties would have had to vote no.
POPIL, FRANK
June 23, 1926 ~ November 5, 2012
The association receives its funding from a portion of North Shore business property taxes collected by the city. The city, on behalf of the NSBIA, previously collected $125,000 a year from area businesses. In 2009, that increased by 2.5 per cent a year for the next five years. With its mandate up for renewal in less than a year, Mutrie said his timing should give the board time to position itself in preparing for the review. When asked if he will receive a severance package, Mutrie replied: “They haven’t come back to me yet. We’ll see.” As for what’s next in his career path, Mutrie said he is considering options. “Change is not a bad thing,” he said.
“I’m pumped. I’m scared and excited at the same time.” Mutrie’s departure was noted in a terse email from NSBIA chairwoman Lynda Douglas: “The board of Directors would like to announce that Peter Mutrie resigned as manager of the NSBIA today (Nov. 8), effective immediately. We would like to thank him for his contribution to Kamloops North Shore and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavours.” The NSBIA has not been immune to controversy in the past. In June 2008, Meleva Peravich quit as association vice-president, citing a board meeting at which she said members spoke crudely about the poor, homeless and addicted on the North Shore.
