School District 70 may be forced to close another school in the Valley next year. District Superintendent Cam Pinkerton said Tuesday that increased costs without correlating revenue will trigger the decision. “It’s crunch time for us in the next year or two, trustee chair Larry Ransom said. “I don’t want to sugarcoat it — it’s not going to be an easy process. In his presentation, Pinkerton said that the district is facing increased cost pressures on two fronts: transportation funding and teachers’ pensions. On the transportation front, the government act that once compelled school districts to provide bus services has been removed along with its previous funding

formulas. The result is that the district’s transportation funding will be reduced by $720,000 over the next three years, Pinkerton said. As well, teachers’ pension plan premiums are increasing by $250,000 in 2013. And the district contingency fund which was built with proceeds from past school closures has been depleted. The result is a $1.22 million loss in revenue. The district is considering several options including reviewing staff and service levels. Other options being looked include altering the school calendar year, reducing transportation costs and increasing international education revenue, which will take time, Pinkerton added. These measures will save the district $1.26 million. Chief among the other options are not
renewing the $110,000/ year VAST lease, and closing an elementary school, which is expected to save the district $300,000 per year. Pinkerton didn’t specify a school, but said that if the option of closing a school is chosen then it should be done before the first board meeting in May, Pinkerton said. “Doing it quickly allows parents to plan for it, he added. The district won’t be left scrambling to make up the shortfall. A special funding protection measure is set to kick in when the district’s enrolment drops by more than two per cent. The district will retain 98 per cent of its funding through the arrangement for three years. The next step is to create a district steering committee, and to commence community consultations in December.

Direct your pennies to a good cause SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
Last November, six-year-old Kyla Devito brought a jar full of pennies into the Alberni Valley News office for our Pennies for Presents campaign. It was a new campaign for us, and Kyla wanted to support it because the money we collect goes toward helping children in our community. Well, Kyla went home that same day
and immediately recruited half a dozen family members to begin collecting pennies and other coins for our 2012 campaign. The jar she is emptying in our front page photo is only part of her effort. We can’t wait to see what she brings in to us. At Christmastime every year, Vancouver Island-based papers in the Black Press newspaper chain promote the charitable

Pennies for Presents campaign. Each newspaper chooses an organization to benefit from this fundraising, and for
the second year in a row we are supporting Port Alberni Toy Run. The Pennies for Presents campaign was the brainchild of the late Frank Legh, a classified advertising consultant with Black Press. In 1996, Legh launched Pennies for Presents with the simple goal that no child should be left empty-handed on Christmas morning. In the 16 years since, the Pennies for Presents campaign has raised close to
$700,000 in pennies, nickels, dimes and other change for various Island charities. We kicked off our campaign last year with a modest goal of raising $1,000, and we managed to beat it by more than $200. This year we would like to beat our total. We’re asking community members to donate their spare change— we’ll take every denomination—over the next five weeks to help provide children
with happy memories on Christmas morning. “The people of the Valley were so generous and we know the money went to good use right here at home,” News publisher Teresa Bird said. “It is a privilege to work with the people from the Toy Run, who do so much for children in the community.” Coins can be dropped off at the Alberni Valley News
office, 4656 Margaret St., beside Big Pig Subs. You don’t have to roll them, we’ll take care of that for you. For more information on Pennies for Presents, or for those wishing to become a drop-off location, please call publisher Teresa Bird or editor Susie Quinn at 250723-6399 or e-mail us at publisher@ albernivalleynews. com. or editor@ albernivalleynews. com.
Women’s centre gets cash Help for Keith Island project The Alberni Community and Women’s Services Society has received $181,536 in funding to partner with the White Ribbon Campaign and North Island College on a student-led “Safer Campus” initiative focusing on genderbased violence on campus. The project is centred around three
goals: to identify and address institutional barriers to advancing gender equality; to engage male students and faculty in campus strategy; and to create culturally appropriate collaborative mechanisms to address key concerns of Aboriginal members of the campus community. “Alberni Community and

The Tseshaht First Nation has received $223,200 in federal government funding to contruct tourism amenities on Keith Island, part of the Broken Group of Islands on the west coast. Nanaimo-Alberni MP James Lunney was in Port Alberni on Tuesday to make the funding announcement as part of the West Coast Community Adjustment Program (WestCCAP). Keith Island is at the heart of the Tseshaht’s creation story, and is thus a sacred cultural site, Tseshaht member Darrell Ross said.

Building a floating dock, ramp and gazebo are all part of the Tseshaht’s Going Home Initiative. “This project provides critical infrastructure for our Tseshaht homelands,” Ross said.
Building these structures will allow the Tseshaht to have someone on site at Keith Island, which is a central hub of the Broken Group, TFN councillor Deb Foxcroft said. “It’s going to bring some economic development projects to our community. It’s going to create some employment. It’s going to bring people to the community where we can protect our ancestral grounds,” she said. The floating dock is the first phase of development for tourism on Keith Island, Ross said. The TFN is looking at building a small lodge or some cabins in the next three to five years. editor@albernivalleynews.com

Old ADSS library to be spared wrecking ball WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News
T
he library at the old Alberni District Secondary School will remain standing for now, even though the rest of the buildings at the old school will be demolished, SD70 secretary treasurer Jerry Linning said. The value in the site is in the land and not in the buildings, Linning told trustees. The community services building and old cafeteria are being used as storage for equipment salvaged from the old school and set aside to be used by other schools. Tentative plans
will see all of the buildings on the Burde Street site demolished except for the library. The two-storey building was renovated in the last decade and meets earthquake standards. It’s the best building on the site and will be left intact, Linning said. The building remains minimally heated and maintained, and it is checked by security, he added. The district hasn’t formally offered the building to the public or community groups; final plans for the area haven’t been made yet, Linning said.
Expressions of interest in the building can be submitted to the board office on Roger Street. The issue of asbestos is complicating the overall demolition. The district is assessing how asbestos, which is considered a hazardous material and that the old buildings are larded with, can be removed in an environmentally responsible manner. Selling the property also isn’t a slam dunk. An amendment to the Official Community Plan is required to change the property’s zoning. The school board also
must apply to the Ministry of Education to dispose of the property. A consultation process with civic officials and the public must be held regarding disposal of the property. Trillium Business Strategies, whose expertise was relied on during the building of the new high school, remains involved with the project, Linning said in an earlier interview. Trillium officials are now assisting in determining the best use of the land and with the sale of the property.
Avenue has taken another step closer to reality. Port Alberni city council voted to support the shelter society’s community consultation process for a new facility. In a letter to council, Port Alberni Shelter Society spokesperson Myron Jespersen said the society is in talks with the Vancouver Island Health
Authority to use their property on Eighth Avenue for the new shelter. Public notification for the intended use of the property has also been completed. VIHA however wants confirmation from the city that their consultation process meets city requirements. In response, Jespersen said that upon access to the property the society will conduct outreach to potential project partners. Also, the new facility’s design will
be compatible with the neighbourhood’s look and feel. The design will be posted for public input, which will be included in the final model and in funding applications. Because the zoning is consistent with a facility, no formal process is required. Nevertheless, it’s important to educate the public and solicit input for the project, Jespersen said. The facility has been in the area for more than 30 years and has developed a good relationship with
the neighbourhood. Comments have been positive so far, but there could be challenges, he said. “Some people enjoy it as an open field. They prefer it to stay that way and don’t want it to change.” The project is a year behind schedule. Jespersen said he expects the early design phase to take approximately five months. Society officials hope to start construction next summer.

Welcome to The Alberni Valley! The sign was welcoming and a friendly reminder that I was only a short time away from catching up with some of my friends from my previous visit to the Alberni Valley. I had left Ontario, cold and snowy, to travel to more temperate climes: all the splendour of truly wintery, mountainous scenery, without the snow days! I was surprised to see that there were other signs as well, that were much less welcoming and something I hadn’t noticed when I was here in the summer. “Closed for the season”, read

Hesquiaht seek vindication over historical hanging CULTURE: | Ida Chong to deliver gov’t ‘regrets’. WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News
The provincial government is making amends to the Hesquiaht First Nation for the wrongful hanging of one of their ancestors 143 years ago. B.C. Aboriginal Relations Minister Ida Chong is delivering a notice of regret in person to Hesquiaht officials on Nov. 17 in Port Alberni at Maht Mahs gym. In her speech, Chong says that the government “regrets” the hanging of John Anietsachist and a man from Mowachaht in 1869 at Friendly Cove. “It’s not a full apology. They say they regret that our people were made to watch a gross indecency,” Hesquiaht member Richard Lucas said. “We accept that though, because they weren’t the government of the
day when it happened. It was the colonial government.” Discussions about making amends have gone on for more than a year, Chong said in an interview with the News. Her predecessor, MLA Mary Polak, got the government machinery moving that led to Saturday’s upcoming announcement. Making amends for the past allows everyone to start taking steps into the future, Chong said. “More than anything else this is culturally appropriate and affords the families some closure,” she said. The expression of regret is not a full apology because few records about the incident can be found. Therefore a complete accounting of the facts isn’t available to determine whether a full apology is warranted or not, Chong said. The arc of events leading to Saturday’s apology began in 1869 when Anietsachist and his wife found
the bodies of a couple who died in a shipwreck on the West Coast. Anietsachist and a man from Mowachaht were ultimately blamed for the couple’s deaths. Medical officials exhumed the couple’s bodies and a subsequent autopsy found no evidence of murder. But conflicting testimony from two tribe members sealed the fates of Anietsachist and the other man. Military officials were dispatched to Hesquiaht aboard the MHS Sparrowhawk to retrieve the pair. The Hesquiaht wouldn’t surrender them, so marines fired on the village with their ship’s cannons then burned the settlement. Anietsachist and his friend from Mowachaht surrendered and were brought to court in Victoria. “They were found guilty in five minutes then sentenced to hang,” said Hesquiaht member Tim Paul, Anietsachist’s
grandson. Government officials returned the men to Hesquiaht, where they were hanged in front of their families. The great-greatgrandson of the captain of the MHS Sparrowhawk who brought the men back to Hesquiaht to be hanged is coming from the United States to attend Saturday’s ceremony, Lucas said. The incident is part of the Hesquiaht’s oral narrative handed down through the generations. Pursuing amends hastened in 2008 when a memorial carved pole was raised at Homiss near Estevan Point in honour of Anietsachist. Making amends has been a long time coming, and writes a new chapter into the oral history, Paul said. “It’s a big step from where we were — sitting and talking about getting an apology,” he said. “It’s finally come to be and it’s about time.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com Twitter.com/AlberniNews

Time for change to B.C. pot laws Salmon mystery far from being solved Marijuana reform advocates hope Washington and Colorado states’ vote Tuesday to legalize and tax marijuana sales will add momentum to their push for change in B.C. While it’s not yet clear if the U.S. federal government will allow stateby-state legalization of recreational marijuana use — other states already allow medical marijuana sales — the vote has huge implications here. Washington state estimates it would collect $560 million in the first year from a planned 25-per-cent tax on the sale of licensed, regulated marijuana through authorized stores. If enacted, this could also cause a partial collapse of B.C.’s estimated $7-billion-a-year illegal pot industry, as growers relocate to the U.S. to avoid the need to smuggle. Recently, the Union of B.C. Municipalities passed a resolution calling for marijuana to be decriminalized. They’d rather pot be regulated and taxed instead, much like alcohol. The U.S. votes are a progressive move toward responsible marijuana use. It’s time for B.C. to take a similar step toward decriminalization, if not legalization of marijuana. The potential tax revenue and the opportunity to reduce law enforcement costs, and help unclog our court system is too much to pass up. The poll results south of the border sent a message that U.S. drug policies are not working. As Canada’s drug policies follow the U.S. closely, it means ours aren’t working either – it’s time for a change. — Victoria News

ICTORIA – Before the 1,200-page, $25-million Cohen Commission report on the Fraser River sockeye salmon fishery slips beneath the waves, allow me to dip my toe into the river of data that has flowed by in the past three years. If your information on this hugely complex subject consisted of skimming a few news stories or watching protesters on TV, you will likely conclude what urban people have been indoctrinated with for years. The whole issue is salmon farms and whether they are bad or catastrophic. “Freeze new salmon farms on sockeye migration route: Cohen” said the headline on a Black Press report. Those who read past the headline would learn that Justice Bruce Cohen
recommended a freeze on further salmon farms around the Discovery Islands group near Campbell River until 2020. It’s up to the industry to show by that time that the risk is “minimal,” or farms there should be shut down. A B.C. Salmon Farming Association spokesman said only nine of 70 B.C. salmon farms are in that area. There are no current applications for more. Let’s say you decide to plunge in, and download the full report from www.cohen commission. ca. If you go to Volume 2, page 102, you will see a series of graphs that show sockeye runs from rivers other than the Fraser, from Washington all the way up to Alaska. It’s not a pretty sight. From Washington up to the Central Coast, the Skeena, Nass and up to
Yukon’s Klukshu and Alaska’s Alsek, most runs show a decline starting in the 1980s or early 1990s. This includes runs that migrate down the west side of Vancouver Island, away from salmon farms. Alaska doesn’t allow farms, preferring “ranching” – a strategy that floods the ocean habitat with millions of hatchery fish. These are commercially fished and marketed as “wild.” B.C.’s North Coast has never had salmon farms. The area has been subject to a moratorium since an NDP-controlled legislative committee gave its verdict on the problem in 2008. The popular villain in those days was sea lice. Skeena MLA Robin Austin chaired the committee that called for an end to open-pen salmon farms in five years. Then-
‘Similar to Cohen, Fraser concluded that there is no simple answer to this complex problem.’

agriculture minister Pat Bell approved one NDP recommendation, a moratorium on salmon farms in North Coast waters. This was after the Pacific Salmon Forum conducted its own fouryear study, led by former fisheries minister John Fraser. Similar to Cohen, Fraser concluded that there is no simple answer to this complex problem. And they agreed that salmon farms don’t explain it. Cohen’s report makes it clear that the problem is far larger than could possibly be explained by salmon farms. How about logging impact? Cohen concludes after much testimony that stream protection has improved significantly during the time of observed sockeye decline. Impact from extra runoff due to pine beetle infestation couldn’t be evaluated. Poaching on the Fraser? Cohen didn’t get around to that. Continued / 11

Salmon runs strong during Cohen hearings
From / 10 His biggest concern was climate change, warming sensitive river waters and affecting ocean conditions. During the Cohen commission hearings, the 2010 Fraser sockeye run came in gangbusters, with 35 million fish. One leading theory is that ash from an Alaska volcano fertilized the ocean, producing algae that supported more salmon feed. Could it be that salmon ranching from Alaska, Japan and
elsewhere is simply depleting the food supply? That too is inconclusive. Finally, Tides Canada, a U.S. front group that diverts attention from U.S. salmon and oil tankers, spent $25,000 to publicize Cohen evidence. But only as it relates to B.C. salmon farms, and how bad they are. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Mailbag: Feedback on news items Transparency clearly missing To the Editor, I filed a Freedom of Information request in August with the Port Alberni Port Authority. My request was: “for all past and current records of the Regional Transportation Committee chaired by the port authority including agenda, minutes and documents produced or distributed for committee members.” The port authority officially responded 30 days later saying their lawyers did not consider the RTC to be subject to the Access to Information Act so they had no obligation to complete my request. I was given a copy of the latest report on the Horne Lake Connector. Due to this refusal to disclose what should be public information, I have lodged an official complaint with the Information Commissioner in Ottawa. I submitted the request, and the subsequent complaint, because I believe it to be abnormal and inappropriate that while the RTC is composed of
mainly publicly elected or appointed representatives, their meetings have been totally closed to the public. The PAPA is now talking about developing a “transportation infrastructure strategy” yet members of the committee have expressed their utmost preference for one development, the highway. Should the public not know what due diligence the RTC has done to come to those conclusions and develop this strategy? With reports from the Lower Mainland about Liberal insiders using hospital expansions to win votes it has never been more important to ensure that all decisions, big and small, be done in the most transparent manner possible. I strongly and respectfully urge the RTC and PAPA to open the meetings of this committee to the public, publish its previous agenda and minutes and allow us all to participate and debate directly to build the future of transportation in the Alberni Valley. Chris Alemany, Port Alberni
Shipping ideas up the creek To the Editor, Under the astounding leadership of Mayor Douglas and the port authority, there’s a proposal for regional economic diversification that would see Ucluelet become a transshipment hub for container ships. Their cargoes would be sorted there and put on barges destined for Port Metro Vancouver and “possibly ... to Seattle and Tacoma”, according to our mayor. The barges could even go up rivers and creeks? Wow! This “gamechanging” proposal is a perfect complement to the role of Port Alberni as an AsianPacific Gateway for raw-log exports, a situation much enhanced by the Hon. Mike de Jong when, as Minister of Forests, he allowed private timberlands to be removed from TFL 44 (our area). Ever since, raw-log exports have skyrocketed, particularly this year. I’m sure that his support for the brilliant idea of unloading container ships and putting their cargoes on
barges will greatly help in moving the project forward. Surely the visions of our mayor and the director of the port authority will soon result in lots of jobs, a new highway and a ring road. Happy days are here again! Richard Berg, Port Alberni
Who supports ‘four pillars’? To the Editor, Passions ran high at a recent gathering sponsored by the Citizens for a Local Economy. Representatives from numerous community organizations (Alberni Environmental Coalition, Transition Towns, Council of Canadians, Food and Philosophy, Port Alberni District Labour Council and Coalwatch) came out to hear speeches delivered by Kelly Drybrough and John Snyder. I imagine it is getting more and more difficult for Port Alberni City Council, AlberniClayquot Regional District directors and Port Alberni Port Authority directors to continue supporting Compliance Coal with its coal port project
when the people of the Alberni Valley vehemently oppose such a venture. Even though Bob Cole and Mayor John Douglas try to put a positive spin on the “Gateway to the Pacific” plan, people in this valley know increased port expansion in this fjord will further contaminate our air and water whether the coal comes by truck or by train. At a recent chamber of commerce luncheon, Mary Polak, Minister of Transportation, was asked “Minister Polak, are you aware that Port Alberni City Council and the chamber of commerce created a four-pillar economic plan without community consultation and without community support...thus, rapid port expansion and the coal port project are not wanted by the majority of the populace who live here? Her response was, “The community will have to adjust and face new challenges.” My, my, doesn’t that sound a lot like a euphemistic way of saying “Let them eat cake?” Ellen Chambers, Port Alberni

Closed: sign of the times? From / 8 As a result, tourism in the the Alberni Valley is highly dependent upon traffic going through on the highway on the way to Tofino, for example. Getting tourists to stop is the ultimate challenge. An even more daunting challenge in winter, when fewer make the trek to Tofino and Ucluelet on the Island’s west coast. Since I had now encountered the information about being on the highway to Tofino for the second time, I wanted to find out more. I figured that if any place would be able to explain this phenomenon to me, it would be the visitors’ centre, run by the local chamber of commerce. Ironically, I tried to go there on a Monday, and the centre was closed. (Editor’s note: The chamber was closed on Mondays for a number of weeks last winter due an economic shortfall in building the new visitors’ centre.) So I approached some local businesses, looking for answers. “There is only one route to Tofino and it goes through Port,” said one business owner. “Over one million cars go through our town in any given summer. It would be nice if we could stop and keep a mere handful.” Her sentiments were echoed by three other business owners in the South Port corridor. I also discovered that some businesses have accepted the reality of the Alberni Valley’s location and aim to capitalize on traffic. Gordon Dick, a Tseshaht First Nation artist and owner of Ahtsik Native Art Gallery even went so far as to choose a side of the highway. He used statistics from the Nuu-chahnulth Economic Development Corporation to help make his decision.
CHARMEAD SCHELLA/Special to the News
A small printed sign on the door of the chamber tells a visitor the centre is closed Mondays.
‘I left the Alberni Valley last winter with a greater understanding of the challenges of marketing to transients...’ – June Kasperski-Wild “I chose the location of my gallery to cater to tourists on their way up the highway to Tofino. My gallery is on this side of the road so that I can attract them on the way up, when they still have money in their pockets.” The story was the same in the downtown where businesses were struggling to build a market based on transients. I was pleased to see though that some of these businesses, like Gayle’s Fashions and GT Vintage (now called The Place and located in Harbour Quay) would also open upon request, which was a nice way to accommodate those that did make it to the valley with money to spend.
The Alberni Valley, like every region, faces the challenge of figuring out what approach to take when it comes to economic development. After visiting in the winter and the summer, I agree with local residents and businesses that in the current environment, they are dependent upon the accidental tourist, of which there are even fewer in the winter. I too did not view the valley as a destination, and acknowledging that first impression, is an essential component to moving forward with a collaborative economic development approach for the valley. I left the Alberni Valley last winter with a greater understanding of the challenges of marketing to transients, but still not happy about the amount of seasonal closures. I couldn’t help but wonder whether or not closing in the winter was the best way to deal with fewer tourists. I had left the Alberni Valley the previous summer, thinking that something, however small, needed to be done to put the area on the map for tourists flying into the Comox airport. Putting those two first impressions together provided me with my last impression— if the Alberni Valley is not easy to find, and the economy is dependent upon the accidental tourist, the Valley would need strong leadership, vision, and cooperation with other areas in order to overcome these challenges, regardless of the season. I am hopeful they will succeed. This is the last of three parts. The first two articles appeared in the Nov. 1 and Nov. 8 editions and are also available online at www. albernivalleynews.com.
Top 20 under age 40 sought WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News
If you know someone you think is outstanding in business or community work, then the Top 20 Under 40 wants to hear from you. Officials from the Top 20 Under 40 are canvassing across Vancouver Island for nominations for the initiative. Roger McKinnon made a presentation on behalf of the organization to Port Alberni city council at their Tuesday
meeting. The Top 20 Under 40 is aimed at recognizing the achievements and work of young professionals under the age of 40. “We also want to showcase young talent to the business community and to show that these young professionals are going to be our future,” McKinnon said. The accomplishments of individuals over age 50 are most often lauded, but people under age 40 put in work of their own
leading up to then, McKinnon said. Nominations for the Top 20 Under 40 Awards aren’t just based on demonstrated excellence in business Judgment, leadership and contributions to communities on a local and regional level are considered. Nominations can be made at the organization’s website: www.20under40. ca and are being accepted until Dec. 15. Regional judges, one of whom is Port Alberni’s Ken McRae, will whittle the list
of nominees down to 100. Finalist judges will chose the top 20. The names will be announced in either February or March. The initiative is an inaugural one. There was a Top 40 under 40 in 2006 but a majority of the winners came from Victoria. McKinnon’s late son, who was from Nanaimo, was among them. McKinnon, 57, originally hails from Port Alberni. He now makes his home there, where he is successful in real estate. reporter@albernivalleynews.com Twitter.com/AlberniNews

Selling property when you already have tenants PETRA BARNFIELD SPECIAL TO THE NEWS
When a rental property is being sold, both the landlord and tenant have rights and responsibilities under the Residential Tenancy Act (RTA). Showing the property s.29 RTA Before showing the rental unit, the landlord must have the tenant’s agreement or give the tenant proper written notice that states the date, time and reason for entry. The tenant must receive the notice at least 24 hours, and not more than 30 days, before the time of entry. Ideally, a tenant and landlord agree on a schedule of viewing times to include in a single notice. Otherwise, the landlord must give the tenant notice each time before showing the rental unit. When notice has been given, the landlord can show the rental unit even if the tenant is not home. A landlord may enter

A notice indicating showings will take place daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for a three-week period would be unreasonable. A lockbox cannot be used without the tenant’s permission. Purchaser wants to live in the unit When the new owner, or a close family member of the new owner, intends to live in the rental unit, the TwoMonth Notice to End Tenancy can be served before the purchaser takes possession of the property, but only after all the conditions of sale have been removed (service of the notice should not be a condition of sale).
The new owner must make the request in writing to the landlord before notice can be served. A “close family member” is defined in the RTA and includes the father, mother or child of the landlord or the landlord’s spouse. If a family corporation owns the rental unit, then a close family member would include an individual who owns, or whose close family member owns, all the voting shares. Purchaser wants to use the rental unit for another purpose The tenant can be served a TwoMonth Notice to End Tenancy after the title of the property has been transferred and all required government permits and approvals are in place when the purchaser intends to: 1 Demolish the rental unit or do major repairs or renovations that require the building or rental unit be empty. 2 Convert the
rental unit to a strata property unit, a nonprofit co-operative or society, or a notfor-profit housing co-operative under the Cooperative Association Act. 3 Convert the rental unit to non-residential use, such as a shop. 4 Convert the rental unit into a caretaker’s premises. Giving notice on a periodic tenancy For a month-tomonth tenancy, or a periodic tenancy with a different period, the landlord must give the tenant a Two-Month Notice to End Tenancy. The tenant is also entitled to financial compensation equal to one-month’s rent (s. 51 RTA). A tenant can end the tenancy earlier by giving the landlord at least 10-days written notice and paying the rent up to, and including, the planned move-out date. Petra Barnfield is housing advocate with Kuu-us Crisis Line Society.

Aging workforce, economic growth spell opportunity in trucking industry Job seekers are in luck when it comes to the commercial road transportation industry in British Columbia. Trucking companies throughout BC require professional drivers, mechanics, dispatchers and operations SPECIAL staff right which FEATURE now, means that job seekers with experience and/or training may find work within their preferred region. For those considering training prior to joining the workforce, demand for skilled workers in the industry is likely to grow – to 2020 and beyond. There are a number of reasons for this. For truck drivers, the industry is facing a North America-wide shortage because most are 45 years of age or older and nearing retirement (in fact, in Canada, according to a report by the Canada Trucking Human Resources Council, 58 percent of longhaul truck drivers fall in this age range). Similar shortages

The trucking industry is facing a province-wide shortage of skilled workers. exist for other jobs, including diesel engine and heavy duty mechanics. Aside from worker shortages, economic growth in the Asia-Pacific Gateway is also driving demand for workers in transportation. This applies not only to
companies in the Lower Mainland, but in other regions as well, since the Asia-Pacific “Gateway” is actually made up of an integrated supply chain of airports, seaports, rail and road connections, from Prince Rupert to Surrey, with
links supplied by trucking. Today’s trucking industry is an exciting place to be. Equipment in many companies is state of the art, meaning increased comfort and ease for drivers and opportunities for mechanics to work with
technologically advanced systems, keeping both their skills and interest engaged. Dispatch relies on sophisticated tracking and routing systems. Others on the operations side also use information technology to deal with everything from licences and permits, to customer services, accounting, sales and marketing. And, people joining the industry have many career choices. Drivers, for example, may work close to home as pick-up and delivery or shorthaul drivers. Those who like the idea of travelling across Canada or North America can become long-haul drivers for an employer or work as owner-operators. Drivers may haul consumer goods, fuel, logs, heavy-duty equipment, livestock – most of what we purchase or consume spent some time on the road with a commercial truck. If you already have experience as a driver, mechanic or operations worker, most companies advertise jobs on their websites. Members of the

BC Trucking Association from across the province may post jobs under Careers on www.bctrucking.com, and the provincial and federal governments maintain job sites at WorkBC (www. workbc.ca/Jobs/) and Working in Canada (www. workingincanada.gc.ca/. Choose to Explore Careers by Occupation, then by Region). Within your own community, it may also pay to approach a company you’d like to work for, drop off a résumé and inquire if and when they’ll be hiring. If you’d like to enter the industry but need training, there are also many avenues to explore. Although there is not a standard training course for professional drivers, there are numerous private schools throughout BC that offer programs. For information on transportation trades in BC, including mechanics and other technicians, visit transCDA (www. tcda.ca/home). And for information on trucking careers in general, see www. truckingcareers.ca.

Christmas in the country DEB HAGGARD SPECIAL TO THE NEWS
As the Christmas season approaches, our thoughts turn to our families and we dream of having a real old fashioned Christmas. We smell the scent of a real pine tree, we see the twinkling Christmas lights, and we smell homemade goodies. Unfortunately, most of us have a “fake” tree, we can’t hang our lights because they are so tangled from last year, and really, who has the time to bake? But if you want to experience Christmas at its best, Cherry Creek Community Hall is hosting their annual Christmas in the Country craft fair. The event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. You can enjoy the Christmas ambience over a delicious lunch. Best of all, you will be able to shop for yourself or that special loved in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. There will be crafters galore with an array of gift giving ideas from jewelry to clothing to home décor. The crafters who come to Cherry Creek Hall always say this is their favourite venue. I always bring my mother-in-law and we have lunch together and I bring
my granddaughter so she can choose a one of a kind gift for her mother all on her own. It is a yearly tradition that I always look forward to doing with my family. Come and visit Christmas in the Country and start your own family tradition. The late Glenn Wong always organized the
New Year’s Eve dance at Cherry Creek Hall. Wong took great pride in bringing people together to have a good time. Cherry Creek Hall decided to carry on the tradition and again host the annual New Year’s Eve dance. Tickets will be on sale at the craft fair or call Karen Sparrow at 250-724-5244.
