Bridge tolls kick in Dec. 8 New bridge, eight lanes through Surrey officially open Dec. 1

By Jeff Nagel Commuters will soon find out if the new Port Mann Bridge ends their gridlock gripes or simply moves Metro Vancouver’s biggest traffic bottleneck further down the highway and onto untolled crossings. The new bridge officially opens with eight lanes on Saturday Dec. 1 and half-price tolls of $1.50 for regular cars will kick in a week later on Dec. 8. The transportation ministry estimates the new bridge will cut commute times 50 per cent and save some drivers an hour a day. But the full 10 lanes on the bridge and on the widened Highway 1 through Vancouver and Burnaby won’t be open until late in 2013 because construction is continuing on much of the corridor. And some critics say even when the full project is complete, traffic heading to those cities will hit heavy volume at the off-ramps, backing traffic up onto the freeway. “My prediction is congestion,” said Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan. “The pinch point will just be moved.” He said Burnaby, New Westminster and Vancouver are all refusing to free up more road capacity in response – by eliminating parking lanes, for example. “The highway is the access point and if that’s where people end up having to sit, that’s where

they have to sit.” But Port Mann/Highway 1 project spokesman Max Logan said much of the westbound traffic using the bridge exits at Cape Horn or Brunette Avenue. “We’re not expecting anything significant in terms of a pinch point or traffic bottleneck,” he said, adding drivers should see similar conditions they now see west of Brunette, until the entire $3.3-billion project is finished in late 2013. It’s a different story east of the bridge. By Dec. 1, there will be four lanes open in each direction running from Brunette over the bridge as far east as 200 Street in Langley, he said, a doubling of highway capacity through Surrey. One of the four lanes each way will be for HOV users, adding 20 kilometres where car pools and other vehicles with at least two occupants can bypass congestion. Registered HOV lane users also get a 25 per cent discount. Drivers who don’t want to pay a toll will be directed over the Pattullo Bridge, via the South Fraser Perimeter Road, which partly opens Dec. 1. NDP transportation critic Harry Bains predicts heavy congestion at that crossing and in feeder routes in Surrey and New Westminster as a result. Logan said he expects some drivers will shift to See FIRST BIG TEST / Page 2

Musical offers ‘bit of a twist’

ea

By Jennifer Lang Who said you can’t have fun in church? A group of performers based in Cloverdale are getting ready for their upcoming show, Sister and Brother Act, It’s a musical comedy presented by A.C.T. Able Creative Theatre, the Surrey Association for Community Living’s drama department, along with Events Unlimited from Sources Life Skills Resource Centre in South Surrey. The show is based on the popular Sister Act movies starring Whoopi Goldberg, and the Broadway musical the films inspired. “We’ve added a bit of a twist,” notes community support worker Sean Rougeau, pointing out the films – which centre around a group of performing nuns – featured mostly all-female casts. “So, we had to get a little creative by adding parts for the gentlemen in our show,” smiles Rougeau. About 16 to 18 members of A.C.T. are involved in the production, which is about half

of the members of the drama department. “They’re really serious,” Rougeau says of the performers involved in the upcoming show, who put on two productions a year. “They have an aptitude in being actors, and they really love it.” A.C.T. also has a theatre sports group for members who prefer improvising and dressing up in a more informal setting. “It’s completely no pressure. It’s just fun and learning some skills.” At Christmas time, the improv unit entertains celebrants at the Surrey Association for Community Living’s annual turkey lunch. Sister and Brother Act is a joint production, with half the performers coming from the Events Unlimited group. It’s presented Tuesday, Nov. 20 at Pacific Community Church, at 5377 180 Street, Surrey. There will be two performances: a morning show at 11 a.m. and an evening performance at 7 p.m. All seats are $10. For tickets, call 604592-5599.

Crews have been phasing in use of the new span in stages. The first big test of whether drivers open their wallets and embrace the new Port Mann will come Dec. 10. How soon is too soon?

When retailers started playing Christmas carols on Nov. 1, was it too soon? The Facebook nation weighs in How soon is too soon when it comes to flaunting the Christmas spirit? For anyone attempting to weigh tradition vs. commercial realities, it’s difficult to gauge. Fortunately, it’s never been simpler to canvass public opinion. Stampede Tack & Western Wear struck pay dirt last week when the Cloverdale business asked its Facebook followers: “When is a good time to start playing the Christmas tunes in a store?” “December 1st and no sooner,” Danielle Fransen wrote, voicing the majority opinion of commenters weighing in with their two cents. “Not yet,” counseled Jacqueline Green. “You will drive your poor staff bonkers!!! My boss started playing all day Christmas music six weeks before… there are only so many Christmas songs… the repetition was crazy-making.” It seems there is such a thing as too much of a good thing when it comes to Christmas tunes. Force the festive feeling too early, and it ruins it for people, and your staff are people, too, I feel obligated to point out. “As a retail worker, hearing nothing but Christmas music for over a month makes the usual

stress absolutely unbearable,” said Jo-Jo Reynen, who favours a midDecember start. Stampede Tack turned to its followers for feedback after hearing about a national retailer who started playing Christmas music on Nov. 1, but pulled the Yuletide tunes after staff complained. “So it got me thinking – when is the right time?” the page’s administrator commented, down thread. “Why play ONLY Christmas music?” wondered Kim Kelly, offering a welcome compromise to those oh-so-fraught weeks between Nov. 1 and Dec. 25. “Can it not be shuffled in and get played more often as Christmas nears?” “November is for Remembrance Day and our soldiers!” Harrumphed Nancy Berry, making a very good point, Stampede Tack agreed. “Appalling before Remembrance Day,” added Bretta Deluca. “Today!!! I never get too much of Christmas music!!!” said Gwen Litke Massie, adding a burst of infectious positivity to the mix. Still, Christmas cheer aside, it

must be acknowledged – seriously, and without snark – that not everyone looks forward to Christmas, for private reasons that may be difficult to reveal, and not because they are grinches or cold humbugs. Quite the opposite. “For some of us, Christmas brings us sad memories, and when we hear Christmas music, it makes it worse,” said Deb Munroe. “Not everyone has a happy Christmas…. it is very difficult to go through the days.” For me, Christmas stirs up PTSDtype memories of perilous journeys across thousands of kilometers of icy, snowy and dark. For more than a decade, I lived in northern B.C., and would venture south to family and old friends each Christmastime. Thanks to a four-wheel drive, cautious attitude, proper winter tires and plain ol’ luck, I’m here to whine about Christmases past to my heart’s content. Speaking of my old haunting grounds, CBC Daybreak North posted this question to its Facebook followers Nov. 5 – Guy

Points of view

Fawkes Day, for those keeping track: “When should people start getting ready for the holiday season? When is the right time to put on your holiday lights?” “One month to Christmas, November 25,” said one northerner, voicing the majority opinion. “I say it’s so much work, and I love it, so the sooner the better,” countered another. “Grinches can waste energy being grumpy.... I will be in Christmas bliss.” Well, perhaps it’s time to take the suggestion of the following Christmas fan and northerner (they’re sensible people) to heart: “I don’t see what they big deal is about when “the right time’ is. If you wanna put up your stuff on Nov 1st then so be it...or leave it till the last week before Xmas...is up to you. “I personally don’t think there is a right or wrong time. I personally wait till December...but there are Christmas lights up and decorations on people’s homes and I quite enjoy seeing it all!” So... let me be the first one to wish you glad tidings of the season. Whatever season it is! – Jennifer Lang, editor

tions basketry, focusing on barter and trade. But those plans soon blossomed into a collaborative exhibit that’s the first of its kind for the museum, McCullough said. McCullough said museum was the catalyst for the project, but the exhibit wouldn’t have been possible without the cooperation and collaboration of the Musqueam and Sto:lo communities. The museum’s basketry, he said, was acquired in an era they were classified simply as “Northwest Coast” rather than by their nations of origin – ignoring millennia of history and geographic reality. Setting the record straight meant reaching out to those who could help provide the answers. Over the span of about two years, Coast Salish expert Dr. Sharon Fortney assessed 109 baskets, discovering that while many were Coast Salish in origin, others were created by Haida, Tsimshian and even Nuu-chah-nulth.

JENNIFER LANG PHOTO

Expert Dr. Sharon Fortney helped identify some of the Surrey Museum’s 109 cedar baskets for a new exhibit.

While it’s not possible to definitively identify each of the works, knowledgable community members and experts can make strong assumptions about an object’s origins, based on design, materials and construction technique. Living memories were accessed as well. McCullough tells the story of Howard Grant, who remembers crossing the Patullo bridge to take baskets onto a reserve in Surrey that’s no longer in use. Another key expert

was Jordan Wilson from the Musqueam Indian Band, who interviewed elders and craftspeople who are continuing the tradition of cedar weaving today. Thanks to his work, elders and contemporary artisans are given a voice, through videos, photographs, display boards and the works themselves. “If one was giving someone berries, it would have been in a basket – and that basket would have been kept and used by the

recipient,” according to Musqueam community member Leona Sparrow, quoted in one exhibit panel. The exhibit highlights three different spots along the river: Musqueam, located at the mouth of the Fraser, New Westminster, and the traditional territory of the Sto:lo, located upriver from Chilliwack. What’s now modern day Surrey was in the middle. Maps are crammed with details visitors won’t easily locate elsewhere, such as names for places that have been in use for thousands of years, to places that have already vanished from contemporary parlance. For instance, the Musqueam had several settlements in the New Westminster area, including one reserve sold in 1959. McCollough said from 1879 to 1916, a general reserve was created in New West for the many First Nations who seasonally visited the town to work and trade. A small reserve for Langley first nations was also located in the area, but was sold. Today, a

small group of people are self-identified as the New Westminster Band. In daily life throughout the centuries, baskets were used as containers for food and water, and were an important aspect of gift-giving at feasts, outlawed along with other traditional practices until more enlightened laws prevailed in the late 20th century. The great skill involved in making them has been passed down through the millennia,

UP TO HOUSE

preserving cultural traditions and knowledge that endure to this day. Cedar bark – harvested from living western red cedar trees – makes for a versatile material. Bark and roots can be woven into many forms, from the practical to the profound: the exhibit includes examples baby carriers, baskets used for berry collecting and storage to chairs, bottles and even tables – examples of these are also on display.

Taking such a collaborative approach is something new for the Surrey Museum, but the result was worth it. “We’re happy they wanted to work with us,” McCullough said. “It’s starts to build bridges and create relationships.” Without the Musqueam, he said, the exhibit’s “soul would have been missing.

an early visit By Jennifer Lang The sight of two Santa Clauses in a red Chevy convertible earned puzzled looks from onlookers last Friday afternoon in Cloverdale. The Saint Nicks were spotted in the bustling 5600-block of 176 Street in the historic town centre at 3:45 p.m. Nov. 9. As a parade of customers streamed in and out of the government liquor store on the block, one of the Santas

could be seen crossing the busy thoroughfare to join his red-suited and white-bearded colleague inside the snazzy classic car. The scene was performed several times, presumably for the benefit of a photographer wielding a camera. The Santas waved as the car pulled out from the curb and the pair made their exit, leaving few clues as to their mysterious appearance.

‘We love helping the community’ Teens team up for toy drive

By Jennifer Lang It’s a holiday toy drive with a twist, a shake, a little bit of dancing, say two local Grade 9 students who are organizing a Punjabi-themed charity event in support of two agencies that help spread the spirit of the holiday season to children and families in need. There will be food, music, dancing, performances and raffles at the women-only event, taking place at the Paradise Banquet Hall this Friday (Nov. 16). “People love Punjabi food, and they love Punjabi music,” says Sushmitha Sidhu, who’s organizing the event along with her friend Navneet Brar. Both teens attend Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary. The event just also happens to be the students’ service legacy project for school. “We love helping the community anyways,” says Sidhu. The teens have already gone door-to-door collecting food donations for the Surrey Food Bank, and will continue doing so every weekend, so don’t be surprised if they come to your home, seeking your support. “We just thought it would be nice thing to help the community,” Sidhu says. “There’s no big major reason, we just wanted to do something so kids who are less fortunate have presents at Christmas time.” Proceeds from ticket sales will to go support the Surrey Food Bank and Deltassist, which operates a toy bank and provides food hampers to those in need. The cost is $20 per person; kids under 6 are free. Guests are also asked to bring at least one item for the food bank. Gift baskets and door prizes will be raffled off at Friday’s fundraiser, taking place at the Paradise Banquet Hall, 201 9385 120 Street in Delta, starting at 6 p.m. The event is aimed at adults but a craft table and games will be available for children. It’s for women only, so guests can socialize in a comfortable and safe environment. It’s the second year in a row for the evening fundraiser. Last year, 100 people turned out. Dresden, Saxony: With the River Elbe to my left and the reconstructed historic city of Dresden below, I stand on the massive city wall wondering: “How on earth did they manage to rebuild this city? And, how much did it cost?” The cost, of course, has to be measured not only in cash, but in lives, determination, pride, and support from former enemies who are now firm friends. Decimated by the Seven Years War in the 1700s, and destroyed again in 1945 by 650,000 bombs in retaliation for Germany’s attack on Britain’s Coventry, this city has consistently, literally, risen from the ashes. The Dresden Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) is, perhaps, the profile to ponder. Built in

the 18th century, it lay in an unsightly city centre heap of rubble throughout “former times’ – Communist rule. After German unification in 1990 the Baroque structure was reconstructed as a symbol of reconciliation with the support of former enemies, historic architectural plans, and much of the stone from the ruins of the original building. This testament to peace took 13 years to build. It was reconsecrated on Protestant Day of Reformation, Oct. 31, 2005. Noted throughout

history for its arts, culture, and technology, Dresden is again a prime tourist destination. My hotel, the new Swissotel Dresden Am Schloss, is ‘sold out’ again this week. A very good year, the manager tells me. Just steps from Frauenkirche, the Semper Opera, the Zwinger Palace, and close to enough shopping to suit any price, the hotel’s preserved Baroque schloss façade blends with local architecture. But, the surprise lurks in the basement. During construction a 15th century stone

cellar was unearthed. It now houses the hotel spa, and is perfect for rejuvenating my aching muscles after days of clambering on and off trains, planes, and automobiles. Although not part of my two-day Dresden Pass, I’ve been told a stop at the Neues Grünes Gewölbe, or the New Green Vault, is a ‘must’. A quick visit, I think, since it’s just blocks away upstairs in Dresden Castle. I’m surprised that admission booking times are mandatory – until I experience the Continued on page 9

Dresden Stollen: a treat at anytime, especially at Christmas.

A prime tourist spot once again From page 7

perience the no-nonsense security which includes synchronized steel doors. Airport security has nothing on this. Once inside, I realize it is indeed a massive vault housing treasures dating back to 1547, but which were assembled in the 18th century by Augustus the Strong as a private treasure chamber for the rulers of Saxony. Named after malachite stone columns in the original severely bomb damaged vault, more time than expected passes. I wander through the rooms admiring the jewels and workmanship, before one gleaming steel door after another firmly shuts me out. En route to dinner I’m side tracked by the Meissen shop. This is the 300th anniversary of the delicate porcelain. Thanks to Augustus the Strong’s passion for porcelain, but lack of funds to import what he wanted, he imported the artist instead. Luring Johann Friedrich Böttger, an alchemist and apothecary, to Dresden, Augustus funded a lab for the 19-year-old deep within the city’s fortifications – far from the clutches of the King of Prussia, who was also pursuing the young science wizard. Thanks to Böttger’s brains, and Augustus’ entrepreneurship, white porcelain was developed, and in January, 1710 August announced the establishment of a porcelain manufactory. Admiring the delicate elegantly painted pieces, I resist the urge to buy a chocolate pot, tea pot, or the little chocolate server figurine. After all, schnitzel awaits on the Brühlsche Terrasse –

beneath which Joseph’s lab was once hidden. Fortified by a glass of Riesling, I admire the early evening river boats depart for local villages, and the Czech border which is only a couple of hours away. Dresden, and surrounding areas, requires more than my rushed 48 hours. Clearly others walking and biking, or tram-riding, through the old city agree. For late autumn, the weather is warm. I reflect on the rewards of friendship versus the devastation of war. Then, I remember – Dresden Stollen! I forgot to buy some of the famous sweet bread laced with raisins soaked in spiced Jamaican rum, candied lemon and orange peel. A large loaf weighed a ton (slight exaggeration), but the halfsize well packed will travel satisfactorily. Do I have room? I make a note to dash out before departure. After all, Christmas is coming. A sign next to traditional sweet said so …only 53 days to go. Suddenly, I yearn to return for the magical German Christmas markets. The wooden toys in the gift store will have to do. It’s a pleasure to have the opportunity to finally enjoy East Germany. My last trip to area was before the Wall came down. Recalling a dismal East Berlin, I reflect on the changes and foresight generated by unification. Tomorrow, I drive to the nearby spa town of Bad Schandau through what is known as the Switzerland of Saxony…but, first, the Dresden Stollen!

overheating

Q

What are some of the most important things to look for when buying a home?

A

Whether you have already looked at over 20 different homes, or you are just setting out on your house-hunting journey, there are a few key things to keep in mind when touring each property. Although your emotional reaction can be an important element (after all, buying a home is one of the most significant investments of your life!), you should try to check that at the door, at least for your first visit. Focusing on the following 5 elements at each home viewing will keep feelings at bay so you can objectively evaluate the property.

Q

With winter weather on the way should i have my cooling system inspected? Just like us, your vehicle has built in temperature limits.

A

In today’s vehicles overheating even just one time can have some long lasting results. Our vehicle’s cooling systems are sophisticated and must be working at peak efficiency. Main components include the radiator, water pump, freeze plugs, head gaskets, timing cover gaskets, heater cores, thermostat, hoses, fan clutch & electric cooling fans. Regular maintenance is the key to ensure every component functions like it was designed.

1) Neighbourhood— location location location… 2) The inner workings — i.e. Furnace hot water tank, etc. 3) Finishes —the quality of materials used throughout the home 4) Proof of past work — renovations, additions, even new appliances 5) Ceilings — Roof and water damage are some of the costliest home repairs

The last thing you need is the temperature to keep rising until something blows!!!

How do I support my “early learner” in their Listings Wanted! “Free Market Evaluation No Obligation” readiness for Full Day Kindergarten? Lunders 4H Aug 22 gurmit kevinlunder@telus.net This question may seem a little early, however, with kindergarten registration beginning soon, now is the time for parents to give it some thought. Let’s begin by affirming that you are your child’s first, lifelong and most important educator. Yes, as a parent I know there are days when this may seem like a daunting, impossible responsibility. All the more reason why surrounding your child with other caring, nurturing and responsive adults is an important first step. Creating a network of supportive relationships — the proverbial “village to raise a child” is time-honoured, well heeded, advice. These relationships and the attachments that young children build with the adults in their lives bring feelings of security, well-being and belonging. A biproduct of healthy relationships for children, is the confidence to interact with their environment, satisfy their curiousity and natural inclinations to play, explore and create. Finding the individuals and the opportunities for your early learner to be a part of a daycare, preschool or early learning centre that believes in these principles and is committed to work with parents, will support the successful growth and development of your early learner.

Q When does a denture need replacing?

A

Dentures should be replaced every five years. Wearing dentures for more than five years without having them checked could be harmful to your health. Here are some of the signs indicating that your prosthesis should be checked: • Sore and irritated tissues • Problems with chewing certain foods • Thinning lips, sagging mouth, a change in facial features • Loose, falling out when speaking or laughing • Has discolored or has an odor • Headaches, neck, or ear pain • Your denture is kept in your pocket most of the time.
