A major pedestrian highway crossing in Fruitvale that has been the scene of numerous near-misses in the past has once again come to the attention of the Fruitvale council after a hit and run Halloween night had near tragic consequences. At its regular meeting Monday night, council unanimously passed a motion to, once again, petition the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure for additional lighting and enhanced safety in the form of pedestrian activated flashing lights at the crossing of Highway 3B at Nelson Avenue, next to the Villagers Pub and Motel.

Village of Fruitvale Mayor, Patricia Cecchini, says she was approached by a constituent who reported her nephew was struck by a passing vehicle Halloween night as he was crossing the highway at the crosswalk and the incident has renewed calls for crossing lights across Highway 3B. Fruitvale resident, Shalaume Leslie, said her 15 year-old nephew, Michael Hamilton, was on his way home after the village's Halloween bonfire at approximately 8 p.m. Halloween night when the incident occurred. Leslie said that, fortunately, her nephew wasn’t seriously injured in the hit and run but suffered scrapes, bruising, and a mild concussion.

Leslie says his parents took him to Emergency at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital but didn’t call the RCMP until the following day. “They said the RCMP constable told them they could file a report but they didn’t really have anything to go on,” said Leslie. After the Trail Times contacted the local detachment, a press release was issued by the RCMP asking for the public's assistance. The vehicle is described as a darker, SUV type, said the release. Police are requesting anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or has any knowledge of it, to please contact the Trail and Greater District RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

Sports Golden medal pool haul

West Kootenay Advertiser

At 88 years of age, Grand Forks’ Betty Brussel is a regular swimmer at the Grand Forks Aquatic Centre and has won many medals while participating in the BC Senior Games. She swam in her first senior games in 1991 when she was 67, and has taken part in 22 BC Senior Games since then. In total, she won six gold medals, one bronze and one silver medal in this year’s Senior Games. “I only knew how to do the breast stroke,” Brussel said when asked about when she first be-

gan swimming, “and I didn’t even do it right!” Though she learned to swim in the lakes and streams in Holland, when she started swimming competitively, she trained at the Castlegar pool where instructors taught her how about the proper strokes and how to turn. “I swim in the 800-metre freestyle, 400-metre freestyle, 200-metre freestyle, 200-metre breast stroke and 200-metre backstroke,” she noted proudly. What Brussel doesn’t like to boast about is how she holds the Canadian swimming record for

all five events, including one record when she beat a fellow swimmer by three seconds. Brussel attended this year’s National Summer Championships in Kelowna, and also competed in World’s Masters Swimming Australia three years ago. “The Canadian Championship in Kelowna is my proudest medal,” Brussel said. “I consider myself quite blessed to be able to still be able to swim.” Brussel plans to participate at the World’s Masters Swimming next year in Italy. “Never give up,” she concluded.

aging editor of Powder, said it was a natural to include the two local resorts. “It’s simple, they’re badass. You’d be a fool not to select them. Our associate editor spent a good time in Nelson and I think it changed him for the better.” He said the West Kootenay slopes are known for an abundance of powder, which explains why the editors also included Fernie and Revelstoke, along

with Whistler, as the other Canadian entries in a field of 32 towns. The competition is set up in a bracket-style format with four regions featuring eight towns and seeded by the editors. Rossland/ Nelson is the top seed in its eight-city bracket, including towns in Montana, Oregon, Washington and Colorado, dubbed the Backscratcher Region. Continued on P. 4

Atamanenko weighs in on U.S. election Guy bertrand West Kootenay Advertiser

The impact of Tuesday’s U.S. presidential election isn’t limited to the confines of its borders. The aftermath of President Barack Obama’s re-election wasn’t lost on Canadian politicians including Alex Atamanenko, the MP for Southern Interior. “I’m happy that Obama won,” Atamanenko said from his office in Ottawa on Wednesday morning. And while the pundits dissected the Democrats’ victory and the Republicans’ loss, the Canadian parties were reviewing their own game plan. “I’m sure the strategists are looking at this and seeing how that will reflect on what’s happening here,” he said. “The one thing that I take from this, and I’m hoping, that

it will put a brake on the whole Tea Party, the extreme do-awayw it h - gove r n me nt , libertarian philosophy that is even permeating our culture. “We cannot allow that to happen in this country and I think this election will help us put a stop to that.” Atamanenko agreed the fallout from the U.S. election was the Republicans inability to broaden their demographic appeal, which was limited to mostly white, middle-class men. The MP said the NDP began addressing that issue on the heels of the 2011 federal election. “We certainly are reaching out to people of all demographics. Even after the (2011 Canadian) election we went out working with students and reaching out more to the ethnic communities to hear their concerns.

“We understand this as a party. These people are part of the total mosaic and we have to appeal and represent people from all sectors of society.” He noted even Alberta’s demographic, long a stronghold for the Conservative Party, is changing. Atamanenko pointed to Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi and the upcoming by-election in Calgary. “It’s not a given it’s going to be a Conservative walkover. There are other people who aren’t white, middleclass males that are in Alberta. “We have to keep that in mind as we try to go out and reach out to folks across this country.” B.C. residents were also watching the developments of initiatives in Washington state, which included the passing of a recreational marijuana proposal.

Atamanenko agreed the issue is growing and pointed to a resolution passed at the recent Union of B.C. Municipalities meeting and the support decriminalization has received from mayors, law enforcement officials and voters. “I think we need to really talk about this and come up with a solution because the current policy we have is not really working. “As we move forward I can see that coming up. But one has to appreciate that we are in really tough times in dealing with this current government. “We’re trying to make sure Canada survives and a lot of things that are near and dear to us. “But I wouldn’t say this debate is on the front burner. “We’re battling these guys to keep the values we have and

some sense of democracy.” As for the neverending gridlock clogging the U.S. Congress, Atamanenko can only hope Americans right their own ship. “People will realize that Obama has four more years, he is the president and if they want to move their country forward they’re going to have to work together. “I think Obama understands how to work with allies.”

The process is complex – 15 steps at least - and labour intensive, and hasn’t changed dramatically from how it was done ages ago. The end result is hugely satisfying though. When the artist is ready to apply a patina, you recognize the permanence of what you’ve done.” After graduating from Augustina College in Sioux Falls with a combined degree in art and anthropology, Haugen learned his trade working with Minnesota sculptor Paul Granlund for five years as an assistant. Rare Taghum-area postmark nets $116 Greg Nesteroff Advertiser Reporter

Another in an ongoing series about Kootenaiana on eBay. A century-old postcard with a rare cancellation from Williams Siding sold last week for $116 Cdn. Williams Siding was synonymous with Taghum. The post office opened under the former name on February 1, 1906 with James Williams as postmaster. He resigned in October 1907 and was succeeded first by John Bell and then A.G. Lambert — partners in a Sproule Creek sawmill. Joshua Marsden became postmaster in 1918, and the office changed its name to Taghum in 1924. Taghum had by then been in common use for about 15 years. It’s the Chinook word for six — but six what?.. is a bit of a mystery. Possibly six miles from the Nelson wharf or Bonnington Falls. The card in question was mailed February 17, 1912 by a

Mrs. E.P. Horton to Mrs. John McKenzie of Duval, Saskatchewan and read: “Just a ppc [picture postcard] to let you see I still think about you. How do you like this pc? Would you like to come? I should like to see you again. The weather is very mild. We have had some fine tobogganing. Remember me to Mrs. Dan and all others.” The lithographed card, published by Nelson bookseller and stationer W.G. Thomson, depicted a common view of the Nelson lakefront and was missing the corner where the stamp was. • Last week’s column about postcards sent to Kaslo’s Frank Abey of the 54th Kootenay Battalion during the First World War brought a call from Abey’s grandson, Dr. Lloyd Abbey of Edmonton, who shed additional light on several things. First, the Lola who sent one of the cards was Frank’s sister. Second, Frank was personal aide to Lt.-Col. Arnold Kemball, commander of the 54th,

and a fellow Kaslo-area resident prior to the war. Kemball died at Vimy Ridge. “I remember my grandfather talking about him,” Dr. Abbey says. “He was a brave man. He told my grandfather ‘Frank, I’ll be killed today.’ And off he went.” Third, different branches of the family spell the name differently — some with one B, others with two. The original spelling is Abbey, but for unknown reasons, when the fam-

ily came to B.C. from Ontario, they dropped one of the Bs. Subsequent generations restored it. The Abbeys in Kaslo and Meadow Creek today are descendants of this pioneer family, and Abbey Manor in Kaslo is also named for them. Dr. Abbey’s father, Kenneth Ross Abbey, who now lives in a veterans home in Edmonton, was a rear gunner in 419 Moose Squadron during World War II. “I’m proud of my

granddad and my dad and what they did,” Lloyd says. “War is scary at the best of times.” Kenneth was a veterinarian, like his uncle before him and his son after him. He and Lloyd practiced together in Edmonton for a number of years. The other occupation that runs in the family is pharmacist: Frank Abey’s father was one, and so is Lloyd’s daughter. “It’s in the DNA,” he chuckles.

brated last weekend, with area residents descending on the downtown core to celebrate the official grand re-opening of the city’s core at the Rediscover Rossland re-opening party. A large crowd gathered on Columbia Avenue despite the cool November air and overcast skies. Fire pits were brought in, and hot chocolate and barbecued food were close by to warm up any cold fingers or bellies. Local bands played in the newly finished Harry LeFevre Square, a historic photo was taken of everyone in attendance and the local Cub Scouts cut

the official ribbon in front of the large crowd, attended by members of Rossland council and others. “The turnout was excellent,” Rossland Mayor Greg Granstrom said. “I think it’s a great sign that Rossland is moving ahead.” He felt that the new downtown reflects Rossland’s positive attitude. The mayor also noted that they wrapped up 27 weeks of Columbia Avenue Task Force meetings last week. The task force provided weekly updates on the progress and upcoming schedule to the public.

Horoscope Michael O’Connor

for the

Week

November 16, 2012

Tip of the Week: There is a lot going on now astrologically as we shift from Scorpio time to Sagittarius. The recent Solar Eclipse New Moon on November 13th is one of the more significant factors. The fact that Mercury re-entered Scorpio from Sagittarius in its retrograde cycle deepens the plot. So, at the exact time of the eclipse Mercury was stationary, meaning it appeared to be at a standstill it its motion precisely at 0 Sagittarius. As we look at the whole chart for the eclipse the energy pattern of itself illustrates a somewhat scattered and confused theme. Mercury Retrograde in Sagittarius is a complex and unstable aspect as is Jupiter Retrograde in Gemini. With the advent of 12-21-2012 fast approaching, the many angles of interpretation of its implications are illustrative of this relative state of confusion. The fact is there is no single way of interpreting anything. As the advances of quantum physics itself has re-asserted, life is much more like English class than Math because it is much more subjective and interpretative than the strides of material science would have it. This is itself is a feature of the revolution in consciousness presented by the end of the Mayan Long Count Calendar which measures 5125 year cycles of which the current one is poised to end and the next round to begin. More light will be shed on this hot topic over the coming weeks. In the meantime, this week’s Horoscope will emphasize the implications of the Solar Eclipse for each sign.

Some deep changes have been brewing in you and these are being strongly activated now. These changes may be for the better so have faith. However, it remains important that you consciously cooperate with them. A process of metamorphosis let alone a mere transition has begun. Direct your attention to the butterfly.

The seeds of change have been planted in your relationship life. Some of your core beliefs and associated perceptions, attitudes and approaches are all under review. Reaching out to a wider scope of association is likely and ideal. Variety in your social life may be the spice. Decipher what are ideals, dreams, goals and fantasies.

Taking charge of your health continues. Various features of your entire lifestyle stand to undergo needed change. Seeking counsel and guidance and/or education and instruction for long-term consideration is ideal. A change of pace, rhythm, habit, attitude and perhaps location are all implied. Decide what is needed, focus and follow through!

A creative, inspiring, passionate and romantic cycle has been seeded. Yet, to realize the fulfillments implied you will likely have to work diligently. Adjusting your scope to encompass long-term considerations is ideal. Patience and faith in the eventual outcome is implied. Increase your awareness, get clear; what and/or who do you need, want and desire?

Getting a firm grasp on your dreams may sound like an oxymoron but it is the theme outlined in the stars. To succeed you will need some leverage. Learning new skills, cultivating latent talents and/or laying claim to anything else that will increase your personal power is implied. Confronting fears and/or clearing blocks are featured in the plot.

Some significant changes in your perceptions are being activated. Above all, your self concept is under review. Do you over or underestimate your abilities, worth and value? Are your current lifestyle rhythms or daily habits conducive to your goals and ambitions? Get clear, get honest, and get on it!

What does a deep sense of security mean to you at this stage of your life? Answering this question accurately is extra important now. The time has come to make some key investments. Returns from past choices are coming in to show you where and how you need to redirect your focus. Review your priorities!

The solar eclipse new moon in your sign indicates a whole new mode of expression and self assertion. Your ambitions are rising again. You still may not be as clear as you would like as to you direction and priorities, however. Some needs are more immediate and personal while others require more discipline and sacrifice to achieve higher purposes.

A process of regeneration and renewal, of death and rebirth has begun. The new you that will emerge will be very different than who and how you are now. There is at least a gold vein of the spiritual implied and perhaps a much larger reserve yet. You can choose to cooperate to achieve a better outcome, or not, but this process will occur anyway.

A new tide of creative purpose and passion has begun. Yet in order to ride the waves with confidence you will have to make some extra efforts. These include the inner work of overcoming lack of faith, doubt and worry. The associated task includes knowing what these are, what their source is, how they operate and how to replace them with faith, assurance and vision.

The seeds of change have been planted in your career and/or social life. A steep learning curve is implied. This will challenge you to face your fears and lay claim to hidden reserves of power. Yet, the journey implied can prove to be enjoyable and even fun. A pioneering spirit is required guiding you into new territory.

A fresh stimulation of your higher mind is now underway. Some measure of training is implied and is necessary to strengthen your confidence. Yet, allowing for creative variety is important for the sake of synthesis and innovation. Avoid singular pursuits yet aim to manage a rich and varied approach.

MATERIAL: The product being transported is called biosolids. This material is a residual from our treatment process and consists mainly of wood Ă€bres and bacteria. Approximately 110 m3 is produced daily with 70% to 75% moisture content. The average weight in a tandem truck with triple pup during the 2012 hauling season was 22 tonnes, or 31 m3 for the fresh biosolids (14 m3 in the truck and 17 m3 in the pup). Composted biosolids are heavier and weights can reach 29 tonnes. Approximately 10,400 tonnes of fresh biosolids was delivered to 25 application sites from late April to midOctober in the 2012 hauling season. During this same period, approximately 6,000 tonnes of composted biosolids were delivered to 22 application sites. For the 2013 hauling season, the volume of composted materials will be considerably less and limited to what is produced across the winter months. SCOPE: Deliver fresh and composted biosolids to designated locations Monday to Friday from 8:15 AM to 4:15 PM. Both products will be paid under a tonne rate. LIABILITIES: Carriers must provide evidence of Work Safe registration and evidence of a minimum Commercial General Liability Coverage of $3 Million. Celgar assumes no liability in transportation of biosolids to their destinations. Trucking Companies are responsible to ensure that loads are secure and designated trucking routes are taken. Carriers are responsible to ensure that their employees or subcontractors follow all Zellstoff Celgar¡s safety policies and procedures. For more information and details on the contract, please contact Jason Tait at Zellstoff Celgar at (250)365-4294.
