East Kootenay Drug Awareness Week November 18 to 24, 2012
Being aware is the first step in addiction recovery In 1987, the Honourable Jake Epp, the then Minister of Health and Welfare for Canada proclaimed that National Addictions Awareness Week (NAAW) would take place on the third week of November of each year. The purpose of NAAW is “to provide information, materials and to promote activities
that will serve to generate awareness of addiction issues which affect people across Canada”. The Nechi Institute, an Aboriginal education and health promotion centre, is now responsible for setting the date for this event every year and in 2012, National Addictions Awareness Week will celebrate the joy of an addictions-free
lifestyle between November 18 and 24. The addiction to alcohol, illicit and prescription drugs, tobacco and other substances, as well as problem behaviours such as gambling, affect people of both genders, of every age, young or old and of any means and backgrounds. Moreover, addiction also has a direct and
important impact on their families and friends as well as their communities. This November, during National Addictions Awareness Week, communities throughout Canada will provide young people and adults with the facts on addiction issues, through various events held throughout the

community and activities for children in the schools. If you have questions about addiction or if you feel that you, or someone close to you may have a problem with alcohol, substance abuse or any other type of addiction, take part in these events, read the material and find out about the available resources and where to get help. Get informed about addiction; experience an addictions-free lifestyle.
Signs that you are addicted to drugs • You’ve built up a drug tolerance. You need to use more of the drug to experience the same effects you used to attain with smaller amounts. • You take drugs to avoid or relieve withdrawal symptoms. If you go too long without drugs, you experience symptoms such as nausea, restlessness, insomnia, depression, sweating, shaking, and anxiety. • You’ve lost control

over your drug use. You often do drugs or use more than you planned, even though you told yourself you wouldn’t. You may want to stop using, but you feel powerless. • Your life revolves around drug use. You spend a lot of time using and thinking about drugs, figuring out how to get them, and recovering from the drug’s effects. • You’ve abandoned activities you used to enjoy, such as hobbies, sports, and socializing, because of your drug use. • You continue to use drugs, despite knowing it’s hurting you. It’s causing major problems in your life—blackouts, infections, mood swings, depression, paranoia—but you use anyway.

Harm reduction and education for a healthier society
For those who have an idea of what harm reduction is, you may tend to think that we are giving special services to a particular population, but harm reduction benefits everyone. Harm reduction refers to any effort to reduce the harm in our lives from drugs, alcohol or any behaviour that may cause a negative effect in our life, meaning, it’s any positive step or movement forward. The goal is to keep us safe, while minimizing death, disease and injury in our lives. The focus is on potential harm and goals for improving overall health, rather than on the drug use itself allowing easier engagement for some than with an abstinence based model. It simply allows us to make more informed choices and better decisions, taking personal responsibility while encouraging self empowerment and self management. Harm reduction gives us tools to make better choices for ourselves allowing us to start where we are at and build from there. It respects and accepts what we are able to do
and reminds us that we already have valuable skills we can build on. It can lead to behaviour change or not; it gives us an opportunity to do what we do while changing our behaviour at the same time. It finds the positive, without judgement or expectation of change. Harm Reduction serves everyone.

them into contact with other services. These services aim to involve people in their own health by keeping them connected to the health system. While accessing harm reduction services in that moment little do people know that they’re already going down that long road of responsibility or recovery. No matter how chaotic or low on the social rung a person appears to be or feel, they still do have choices especially if we help them and give them the tools to make these choices. The harm reduction philosophy has respect for people’s strengths and love for their differences. Harm reduction is cost effective and a
needed link to the continuum of care. Research shows harm reduction activities can: • Reduce HIV infection and Hepatitis • Reduce overdose deaths and other early deaths among people who use drugs • Reduce injection substance use in public places, and reduce the number of used needles in public places • Reduce the sharing of needles and other substance use equipment • Educate about safer injecting and reduce injecting frequency • Educate about safer sex and sexual health and increase condom use • Reduce crime and

The Power of the Flower
Since last week, a blanket of snow has been covering our gardens, and it is time to concede that this outdoor season has come to an end. So now we can turn our attention to the houseplants - which in my home have been somewhat neglected all summer long. Houseplants can brighten up any room and add some life and colour to the grey winter months. Not to mention, they clean the air for you. There are two main types of houseplants - foliage plants and flowering plants. As their name suggests, foliage plants are grown for their desirable foliage. This includes hanging plants like spiderplants or standing specimen such as a ficus. Whereas these plants will flower every once in a while, their blooms are usually very non-descript and sometimes even downright ugly or stinky. If you are looking for colour, you want to choose flowering plants. Given the proper conditions and care, these plants, such as hibiscus or lipstick plant will flower year after year. Well-lit rooms suit most varieties of houseplants, although some plants can survive in lower light levels. All plants will benefit from good quality light, as this is necessary for photosynthesis, the plants’ way of creating energy to fuel their growth. One rule of thumb is: If your plant has light coloured or variegated leaves, it likely requires more sunlight. If it has solid dark green leaves, it will usually do alright in lower light levels. Rooms with south or west facing windows often provide the most light and north facing windows providing the least. During the winter months, it might be necessary to move your plants to a brighter location until the spring, although generally, plant growth slows down during winter’s short days. Many plants don’t grow or flower as well, if at all. Growth and flowering resume in the spring as the days lengthen. Just as they can do with a little less light, many plants also need less water during the winter months. In general, over-watering seems to cause more houseplants to die than not watering enough. Plants have different watering requirements, some want constant moisture while others benefit from drying out completely, and others are somewhere in between. One quick check to see if the plant might need watering is to stick your finger into the soil and feel for moisture. When you do water your plants, do so liberally until a little water escapes through the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot. Make sure, however, to not let plants sit in water in a saucer or outer pot. Premature leaf drop and discoloured, dried tips, or spotty leaves can all be signs that you are overwatering your houseplants. Unfortunately, the plant often looks more like it is dying of thirst, causing some plant owners to give them even more water. Too much water drowns the roots, making it more difficult for the plant to soak up oxygen and nutrients from the soil. If your plants seem unhealthy or are no longer growing as well as they used to, look for signs that over-watering is the problem. Just like people, without food plants will not survive. Fertilizer is a plant’s food and how much you have to feed them again depends on the season and your plant’s growing cycle. Plants need fertilizer when they are actively growing, which for most plants is from spring until fall. The exception are winter blooming plants, such as Christmas cactus or amaryllis. These should be fertilized in the winter as well. There are specialized houseplant fertilizers on the market that are designed to meet the specific requirements of many plants. Just because there is snow on the ground does not mean you have to do without plants and flowers in your life. Houseplants can brighten up even the gloomiest winter day and let you nurture your green thumb while you are waiting for the white stuff to melt again. Till next time... happy growing. Kimberley’s improving its brand, and wants your voice. Kimberley is strengthening its brand, and it needs help from the people who call Kimberley home. No, there’s no steer wrestling experience necessary. Gloves and jeans aren’t required. There’s no cattle or branding irons. All that’s needed is your thoughts, insights and opinions about Kimberley. But first, what is a brand and why is it important? What’s a brand? Kimberley’s brand is the collection of perceptions and hopes of the people who live here. Kimberley’s brand is the way community members live their lives, how business is conducted and how the community is shared with each other and visitors. Kimberley’s brand is Kimberley’s story: it’s who we are, what we do, how we do it and who we want to be in the future. Kimberley’s brand is also the story people tell about Kimberley when Kimberley people aren’t around. Kimberley’s brand is a collection of places, experiences and attitudes. If you live in Kimberley, your story is part of Kimberley’s story. Kimberley is strengthening its story to ensure its people remain proud of who they are and where they live, and so they work better together for our community’s future. As with many communities, Kimberley experiences some challenges in communicating our story and articulating our vision. Strengthening our brand will help develop stronger vision, increase confidence in decision making and better represent Kimberley’s pride and spirit not only to each other in the community, but also to the world at large. “You Can’t Take It With You” eagerly await for all of their hard work to pay off. Over the past two months, various students from grades 10-12 have dedicated their time and dramatic flair in order to put on a spectacular show. In a tale of a close-knit and uniquely quirky family who can’t help but stick their noses into their lovesick daughter’s business, “You Can’t Take It With You” will make you keel over in a fit of laughter, sit right on the edge of your chair in anticipation, and leave you scrambling for your tissues. The characters will be brought to life by Desiree Lepine, Joelle Winkel, Trevor McGovern, Jayla Toorenburgh, Angus Liedtke, and many more comedic young actors. Directed by Mary Hamilton, “You Can’t Take It With You” illuminates the stage from November 29th – December 1st at Key City Theatre. Tickets are available at the Key City Theatre box office: $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. on November 29th and 30th and 2 p.m. on December 1st. “You Can’t Take It With You” will have you talking about its featured rambunctious family for weeks after the performance. Don’t miss out on this hilarious prize winning comedy!
