The provincial government is seeking public consultation on its new Wolf Management Plan that will provide guidelines on a region-by-region basis to deal with B.C.’s growing wolf population. Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Steve Thomson told the Townsman the plan does not mean the province will begin culling wolves, but instead lays out the guidelines to manage the wolf population in a sciencebased manner in each region of the province. “The report will help inform future policy,” he said. The plan is the first of its kind dealing with the management of the grey wolf in more than 30 years.

It represents an $800,000 investment; it’s a significant project,” said Telus spokesperson Shawn Hall. “We are really thrilled we can turn this site on.” The new site also brings high-speed internet access to residents between Moyie and Yahk who have until now only had dialup internet.

o what’s a female southron to do? Where can a gal go to get away from the cloying embrace of Louisiana social life, the sofa slug she’s married to, the dog with the mysterious skin ailment? Where can she escape to for a short, refreshing while, to reemerge with her hair looking fabulous? You are entering women’s territory when you enter Truvy’s homebased beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana. Check your cares at the door. In “Steel Magnolias,” a new, tightly performed Community Theatre production, secrets will be revealed, parsed and cross-referenced, sometimes to great turmoil in the soul — but nothing will interfere with the ability to do good hair. The outside world, with all its lummox menfolk, is a loud place outside Truvy’s door. The neighbourhood echoes with the sound

Who makes up this haven of female camaraderie, this pride of lionesses? There’s Truvy

And then there’s the hair itself, which is coiffed, curled, cut, styled and shaped throughout the play, as though it were running a sideline commentary in the secret sign language of the stylist, straight out of the pages of “Women’s Day,” or “Southern Hair.” But as it turns out, you cannot just check your troubles at Truvy’s door. coming — the bottom occasionally sags underneath all that sunny, wise-cracking eccentric southern pleasantry, and the dark gothic under-current is revealed. That’s “gothic” as in “Southern Gothic.” Watch out! Everyday situations that we joke about one day are actually poised on edge of tragedy. In the irony of the Southern Gothic genre, you can see tragedy coming from a great distance away, but you are seemingly powerless to prevent its arrival. Director Bob McCue has brought forth great performances from his sextet of actors. They disappear into their characters and reemerge larger than life, with distinctive personalities and compelling story arcs of their own. Of particular note is the acting of Kasner and Michelle McCue, whose co-dependent motherdaughter relationship drives “Steel Magnolias” to a very southern conclusion. “Steel Magnolias” opens Friday, Nov. 16, at 8 p.m. in the Studio Stage Door in Cranbrook. It continues Saturday night, Nov. 17, and on November 21 to 24 and 28 to 30, closing on December 1. Directed by Bob McCue, the cast features Susan Hanson, Michelle McCue, Kirsten Kasner, Elizabeth Ross, Joanne Wilkinson, and Hannah Van der Roest. Job action up in the air for COTR Annalee Gr ant Townsman Staff

CUPE Local 2773 will be waiting one more day for a response from the B.C. provincial government before College of the Rockies support staff decides to take job action, says local president Pam Catsirelis. “We decided as a group that we would give the government one more day,” she told the Townsman. A 72-hour strike notice was delivered this week setting a potential for strike action on Monday, November 19. But on Thursday the decision was made across CUPE to allow one more day for a response from the B.C. Liberal government. Job ac-

tion could happen on Tuesday but Catsirelis said it’s up to the entire CUPE Local 2773 to decide. “It’s a provincial group so we make our decisions as a group,” she said. “It’s fluid.” Catsirelis said the union has been meeting with their employer, the B.C. Post Secondary Employers Association (PSEA), since August 23. The PSEA represents smaller universities like COTR in the province on behalf of the provincial government. Tuesday would be the latest the union could strike under the current 72-hour notice. Catsirelis said support workers that would participate in the job action would include library

technicians, media techs, facility and administration staff. “It’s broad, it’s not just grounds keepers,” she said. The action would in-

clude all COTR campuses in Fernie, Golden, Invermere, Kimberley and Creston. Catsirelis said the strike would not include faculty, however she said they had

indicated they would not cross the picket line. The contract for CUPE Local 2773 expired on June 30, 2010 and local bargaining was completed in the

spring of 2011 according to Catsirelis. COTR is providing updates as they come in for students online at cotr.ca/ jobaction.

Jumbo or Qat’muk Ktunaxa announce Nov. 30 as filing date for judicial review of Jumbo Resort Townsma n Staf f

The Ktunaxa Nation has announced it will file an application for a judicial review os the Jumbo Glacier Resort on November 30. The Ktunaxa Nation will submit their filing with the BC Supreme Court in Vancouver, where a contingent of Ktunaxa leadership will make a public statement. In conjunction with the filing, a rally will take place in Cranbrook, where it is intended the court proceedings will ultimately be held. Once a court date is set, the Ktunaxa will argue on how the approval of the resort represents a desecration of a principal Ktunaxa sacred site, the likely undoing of Ktunaxa traditional spiritual and religious practices, and consequently a significant and unjustifiable violation of Ktunaxa constitutional rights. In March, the B.C. Government approved the resort in the heart of an area the Ktunaxa call Qat’muk (GOT MOOK). Located an hour west of Invermere, the Qat’muk area is home to the Grizzly Bear Spirit, and is vital to Ktunaxa culture and spirituality and the region’s environment. “The Ktunaxa have clearly and consistently indicated that if this resort is built, it will critically damage our religious rights and freedoms, which are provided to us by the Canadian Constitution,” said Kathryn Teneese, Ktunaxa Nation Chair. The Ktunaxa Nation said in a press release Thursday that Qat’muk is where the

Grizzly Bear Spirit was born, goes to heal itself, and returns to the spirit world. For the Ktunaxa, relying on the continuation of traditional spiritual and religious practices, Grizzly Bear Spirit is a unique and indispensable source of collective as well as individual guidance, strength, and protection. Qat’muk’s importance for Grizzly Bear Spirit is inextricably linked with its importance for living grizzly bears now and in the future. “Ktunaxa have been on record as being opposed to this resort since it was first proposed,” Teneese said. “Our opposition is based principally on the spiritual importance of the Qat’muk area for Ktunaxa people, as well as the concerns for the protection of wildlife populations, biodiversity and water quality.” The Ktunaxa said that despite efforts made by the First Nation to convey the cultural, spiritual and religious significance of Qat’muk, the B.C. government approved the resort on March 20, 2012. “The resort was approved despite the strong evidence of the critical impact it would have upon our spirituality and culture,” said Teneese. “We now have no other choice but to challenge the B.C. government’s decision making process. We feel that this decision will not stand in a court of law, and will be found to show that the B.C. government did not make the correct decision in approving the resort in the heart of Qat’muk.”

SD5 incorporates new calendar regs Parents to get glimpse of future with new calendar regulations

Annalee Gr ant Townsman Staff

B.C. families will have more time to plan with new calendar regulations for school districts launched this week as part of Bill 36. Bendina Miller, superintendent of School District 5, said the new calendar regulations set forth by the Ministry of Education will allow greater flexibility for school districts to plan their calendars including the ability to set a calendar for three years in advance. Public consultation has always been an important part of planning for the next school year, but Miller said it will now have a deadline of March 31 instead of May so that families will know what

the next year holds much sooner. “By March 31 parents can know what the calendar is for the next year,” Miller said. Under provincial law, children in kindergarten must be in school for 853 hours, Grade 1 to 7 for 878 hours and Grade 8 to 12 for 950 hours. Miller said the calendar must meet that minimum number of hours, but how they plan those out is up to each individual district. “How we spread those hours out is flexible,” she said. According to the Ministry of Education, the new regulations mean school districts will be able to determine the

number and dates of days in session, the number and dates of each non-instructional day, the dates of vacation periods and the dates of each non-instructional day. Miller said SD5 utilized a more flexible calendar in recent years to allow students to have every other Friday off by adding minutes to the end of the other days in the year. “We’ve always been in compliance with the former calendar regulations,” she said. Consultations have always included parents and staff, and that will of course continue according to Miller. What has changed is the deadline and more guidelines for school boards

should they choose to adopt a year-round schooling system. Miller said the consultations will be open for parents and staff to comment, and they will take any recommendations very seriously. “We would go into the consultations with an open mind,” she said. The district received the new regulations on Sunday and will work through them before the consultations begin so that parents will be fully aware of the new changes and what’s available to them and their children. There are currently no dates set for the public consultations but Miller said the district will announce them later on.

Now those residents can connect through Telus to high-speed internet using the wireless network. Hall said Telus offers a range of affordable wireless modems that plug into the computer’s USB drive. “For some people, that’s a great option, a great way to access the internet.” It also increases safety along the stretch of Highway 3, especially for access to 911. “When you consider

that more than 60 per cent of 911 calls come in from wireless devices, there are some real safety benefits to bringing in these new sites, as well as economic developments,” said Hall. That will be a relief for East Kootenay drivers, said MLA Bill Bennett. “Having access to cellular service along that road will provide a measure of comfort and safety for all motorists in the area,” said Bennett. “The stretch of Highway 3/95 between Yahk and Moyie

is well travelled both by locals and those en route to beautiful destinations such as Moyie Lake Provincial Park.” Telus signed a 10-year agreement with the B.C. government this year to connect more than 1,700 km of highway with wireless service across B.C. “This will not be the last wireless site we are building in the area. We are continuing to look for locations for additional wireless sites and will be building those out over the coming years.”

Wolf plan provides region-by-region guidelines Continued from page 1 The last report was completed in 1979, and Thomson said it was important to complete the plan to participate in the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). “Those are the main drivers of having an updated plan out there,” Thomson said. The plan lays out seven management tools that the province will be able to use with information on their effectiveness, advantages and disadvantages. It was developed by biologists and other stakeholders and has compiled the scientific evidence that could be used in the future to make decisions. “That’s why it’s important that we put it out for public opinion,” Thomson said. Among the tools suggested, the direct removal of packs is listed as the most effective method; however, the plan says that the threat is eliminated in the short term but the pack quickly rebounds. It also says elimination of packs is “politically difficult to implement.” Moderately successful solutions are to launch a public education

campaign to encourage hunting and trapping of wolves. There are currently no bag limits for hunting in the Rocky Mountain Trench below 1,100 metres. The removal of individual wolves from a pack can often help when the animal is targeting livestock, but it is moderately successful because the pack will often respond by more females being available for breeding if the alpha-female is removed. Typically only the alpha-female will breed each year. Thomson said it was important to outline a number of options for wolf management, because every region has different priorities. “We live in a unique province,” he said. “This is not a plan that outlines specifically, there are many options.” Thomson said the focus in the Kootenay region is to manage the relationships between predator and prey when it comes to preserving livestock and endangered species. Research included in the new report suggests that the predator-prey relationship between wolves and the mountain caribou is paramount for that species’ survival. “One of the key elements is to make informed plans on predator-

prey relationships,” Thomson said. “It’s going to be important to make the decisions based on science.” Thomson said the plan includes the information available on wolves at this time, but it acknowledges that there are knowledge gaps, such as the relationship between wolves and other predators. “The plan provides a lot of science behind the species,” he said. What is known is that wolves are a hardy species that is growing across the province. There is no exact population number available due to the species’ elusive nature, but it is estimated in the total Kootenay region the population is between 550 and 850 wolves. The population was nearly wiped out of the Kootenay region by hunting in the 1970s. The season was closed until the 1980s when it began to rebound and has seen a harvest of between 20 and 60 wolves each year since the mid-1990s. The harvest spiked in 2009 when a record number of wolves were taken by hunter and trappers. The plan did not list the exact number of wolves harvested in 2009. “Wolves are a very durable species,” Thomson said. Not only are wolves rebounding, their territory is expanding and many are returning to regions where

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Nathan Denette

Wolves on average have five pups per litter when prey is plentiful. Hunting is difficult to rely on as a management tool even though in the Kootenay region there are no bag limits in areas adjacent to caribou habitat beginning September 1. “Often wolf hunting is opportu-

nistic,” Thomson said. Thomson said the provincial government is looking forward to feedback on the wolf management plan from the public. “It’s a subject that people are very interested in,” he said. To view the entire plan and provide feedback, visit http://www.gov. bc.ca/for/.

Skills training offered to local First Nations Annalee Gr ant Townsman Staff

The Ktunaxa Nation Council and College of the Rockies have partnered to provide 12 participants with access to the Aboriginal Training for Employment Program (ATEP). The 18-month agreement was signed this week and will provide for skills and job opportunity training for 12 Aboriginal participants. “The Ktunaxa Nation is pleased that Aboriginal learners within Ktunaxa Traditional Territory will have this incredible opportunity available to them,” said Ktunaxa Nation Chair Kathryn Teneese. “We are once again very happy to part-

ner with the College of the Rockies as we collectively create a better future for our region.” ATEP is being expanded to include the 12 new attendees and will provide an introduction to industry and certifications. It was introduced in 2010 through the Canada-British Columbia Labour Market Agreement. At that time the B.C. government invested $4 million through its BC Jobs Plan. It has previously been available at 17 other Aboriginal organizations and will now be available locally. As of January more than 500 Aboriginal people have graduated from the program. MLA for Kootenay

East Bill Bennett said ATEP is focused on the needs of Aboriginal students. “This type of funding, which ensures that Aboriginal learners’ needs are met, is very important,” he said. “ATEP has been very successful in teaching in-demand job skills and I’m very happy to see this program expanded.” Participants in ATEP must be of Aboriginal heritage and over 18 years of age. They must not be on EI benefits. They can be employed but must not have a high school diploma to qualify. For more information visit http://www.aved. gov.bc.ca/aboriginal/ programs.htm.

for being tolerant of non-Sunni minorities. This has persuaded most non-Sunni Syrians that they are under attack – and thirty percent of Syria’s population, with a big, wellequipped army and air force, can probably fight 70 percent of the population with only light weapons to a standstill. In fact, the Syrian battlefield, after only a year of serious fighting, is already coming to resemble the Lebanese battlefield after the first year of the civil war there. Large tracts of the countryside are under the military control of the religious or ethnic group that makes up the local majority, while the front lines in the big cities have effectively congealed into semi-permanent boundaries. In Lebanon, the level of fighting dropped a lot after that first year, apart from the period of the Israeli invasion and occupation in 1982-83, but the country continued to be chopped up into local fiefdoms until the Taif accord in 1989 led to the end of the fighting. There are obviously differences between the Lebanese and Syrian cases, but they are not big enough to justify any confidence that Syria’s future will be different from Lebanon’s past. Assad will continue to have access to arms and money from Iran and Russia, and there will be no large-scale military intervention from outside to tilt the balance decisively one way or the other. A split in the Baath Party or a military coup could open the way to national reconciliation if it happened relatively soon, but that is not likely. Apart from that, the only thing that might really change all these calculations and break the stalemate is an Israeli attack on Iran and a general Middle Eastern conflagration. That is not a price anybody wants to pay. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist based in London

W

illiam Henry Wilson, a jeweler and optician by trade, arrived in town in 1902, at the age of 25. Born in Farnham, Quebec, it is likely his decision to move to Cranbrook was due to the presence here of his first cousin Samuel Hungerford, a local CPR locomotive shop foreman. W.H. Wilson was not the first jeweler in the city, indeed he came in about fourth on the list although two had come and gone, but Cranbrook was a booming town and there was room for duplication. Thus, W.H. Wilson Jeweler happily settled in to ply his trade. He opened his first store on Armstrong (9th) Avenue in June 1902. The jewelry trade proved profitable but it was his skill as an optician in which he truly excelled. A man of energy and ambition, it was not long until he married Miss Emily Amelia Johnson of Knowlton, Quebec, in a quiet wedding at the Cranbrook Methodist Church and rented a larger storefront on Baker Street to increase the visibility of his business. He would move again within a year to a spot on the opposite side of the street near the Manitoba Hotel (now demolished). Ever the modern man, Christmas of 1902, saw his large plate glass display windows declared amongst the finest in the Kootenays, not just for the contents but for the very impressive electrical revolving display that captivated shoppers. Business increased and in June, 1904, he hired Thomas McKee as watch repairmen while he himself set up rooms in the rear of the building dedicated to the optical trade. He took a very active part in civic affairs, a practice he was to continue throughout his life. He joined the city band, developed a serious interest in automobiles, donated trophies (which he engraved using the most up-to-date equipment) to any and all sporting events and generally became a stalwart of the community His stock grew as he added

His stock dwindled as his assistant Mr. McKee regularly pilfered a large degree of inventory, much of which made its way to the red-light district as gifts for the ladies whom Mr. McKee swore he was trying to “lead to Jesus.” The path eventually led to a five-month jail sentence in Nelson where he spent time with Charles Delaney, who was arrested trying to rob Wilson’s Jewelry with

the use of a piece of hay wire through a hole drilled in the display window casement while cleverly disguised in black greasepaint. Mr. Delaney received a one year sentence. In August, 1906, construction began on the Wilson residence, one of the finer homes of the area at the time, a mantle it carries to the present day. The well-crafted lines of the two-story structure are highlighted by a verandah featuring a triangular pediment into which is set a unique decorative medallion. Until recently it was one of the last homes in the Baker Hill district to retain

its original picket fence (or any picket fence for that matter). Mr. and Mrs. Wilson moved into their new home in October, 1906, and added their only child, daughter Jean, one year later. William’s sister May, a nurse, also joined the family. Sept. 1907, saw the jewelry store move to its final location in the former Bank of Commerce on Baker Street, near the present day clock tower. The Wilson’s travelled back east frequently, not only to visit family but to allow Mr. Wilson to further his optician’s education, allowing him to eventually grind his own lenses as part of his services. He travelled to the St. Louis World Fair in 1904 and found himself in New York City in 1909 to witness the famous flight of Wilbur Wright around the Statue of Liberty. On a more local note he is credited as having driven the first automobile from Cranbrook to Moyie and Yahk, a feat which, given the roads (or lack of) at the time, placed him among the upper echelons of automobilists of the day. His ability to captivate window shoppers came once again to the fore in 1911 when he introduced a novel device; an electric projector which, through the use of a strong light bulb, two powerful lenses and glass advertising disks, allowed him to project advertisements as far as 30 feet, although he mostly confined them to the sidewalk in front of his shop, to the great delight of passersby. Mr. Wilson retired in 1939, selling his building, one of the very first constructed in the city, to Aris Catsirellis who demolished it and constructed a brick edifice that became the Pat Coffee Shop many years and was, in turn, eventually demolished by the City of Cranbrook. William Henry Wilson became Cranbrook’s first “Good Citizen of the Year” in 1953, in honour of his many years of contributions to civic causes. He died at the St. Eugene Hospital on Jan. 17, 1958, having outlived his wife by two years. Endnotes: W.H. Wilson’s sister married A.H. Eager, after whom nearby Eager Hill is named. His first cousin Samuel J. Hungerford went on to become president of the Canadian National Railways and Trans-Canada Airlines. In memory of ManWoman 1938 - 2012

Russia beats WHL all-stars 5-2 to end Super Series C ANADIAN PRESS

VICTORIA - A win against each Canadian junior hockey league had Russia in a mood to party Thursday. Five players scored as the Russians defeated the Western Hockey League all-stars 5-2 in the final game of the Subway Super Series. Mikhail Naumenkov, Andrei Sigarev, Kirill Dyakov, Alexander Khokhlachev and Yaroslav Kosov scored for Russia, which tied the best-of-six series at three.

“We’re a proud team and our kids did their best, but we made too many mistakes and they capitalized.” Don Nachbaur Russian goalie Andrei Makarov, who was a standout in the series, said he and his team were ready to celebrate after winning Game 6. “I feel happy and it was lots of fun. I feel amazing, actually, and it was a big step for us each game that we won,” said Makarov, who made 22 saves. “The team is feeling great. We will be celebrating a little bit.” The Russians finished the series with a win against each junior hockey league, after previously beating the QMJHL and the OHL. WHL coach Don Nachbaur said he was proud of his team for hanging with the Russians after beating them 1-0 in Game 5. “The kids did their best and we’re not blam-

ing anybody. Last night it went our way and tonight it didn’t,” said Nachbaur. “We’ve got to give full credit to the Russian team - they know how to play. “We’re a proud team and our kids did our best, but we made way too many mistakes and they capitalized.” Ty Rattie and Adam Lowry scored for the WHL. Russia opened the scoring when Naumenkov fired a long wrist shot from the point through a screen that fooled WHL goalie Laurent Brossoit. With just under 10 seconds left in the period Russia took a two-goal lead when Sigarev took a drop pass, toe-dragged the puck past the WHL defence and fired a wrist shot top corner past a stunned Brossoit. The WHL got on the scoreboard when Rattie grabbed the puck at the Russian blue-line and deked to the outside past their defence, bouncing it off the post short side on Makarov. Russia responded just 28 seconds later when Dyakov picked up a rebound and snapped it low past Brossoit, making it 3-1. Later in the period Russia took a commanding lead on a two-on-one right in front of the WHL net. Khokhlachev faked the puck to his backhand and roofed one over a down and out Eric Comrie, who had replaced Brossoit at the halfway mark of the period. Early in the third the WHL made the game 4-2 on the power play Lowry tapped in a feed from Colin Smith.

Curlers off to national championship TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor

Tom Buchy and his team are heading out to Quebec on Friday to represent B.C. for the Canadian Mixed Curling Championships after earning the honour by winning the provincial play down last spring. Buchy and his wife, Lori, are joined by teammates Dave Toffolo and his wife, Robyn, who booked their third trip to the national tournament in their nine years of curling together. For Dave Toffolo, it’s his fourth time competing in the event, but it was with a different team 18 years ago. “You still get a little nervous and excited, but I think we’re going to have to be able

to go play our best,” said Buchy. “Our goal is to make the playoffs and see what happens after that, but it’s a good field this year and it’s certainly different, going for a third time instead of your first time, as far as nerves-wise.” The four have been hitting the sheets at the Kimberley Curling Club as much as possible over the last few weeks to get themselves back into game-shape, according to Dave Toffolo. “It’s more getting your body where it was in the spring, the strength in your legs to push out of the hack, the strength for sweeping and there is some endurance involved in sweeping,” Toffolo said. “That’s kind of what you’re

working on at this time of year to try and get there really quick. It’s tough but we’re working as hard as we can.” Anytime can be practice time for the team, as Toffolo makes the ice at the Kimberley Curling Club and has keys to the building. The field is pretty tough. Team Alberta, who came in second last year after losing the final in a close game against Saskatchewan, is back with the same team, but with an Olympic pickup in Cheryl Bernard, who replaced a pregnant team member. Bernard represented Canada in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, skipping her team to the gold medal final where they lost a heartbreaker to Sweden.

“She’s going to be throwing third rocks for them and that’s a pretty good pickup for any team,” said Toffolo. Robert Campbell and his team out of P.E.I.—the 2011 championship team—is back for another shot at glory and will be a tough opponent as well. However, each team at the tournament is the top team in their province, meaning everyone will be tough. “They’re all so solid, but I would say P.E.I and Alberta are the top two favourites,” added Buchy. “But you can’t take anyone lightly because every team is really solid.” The team flies out on Friday to Mont-Royal, Q.C., and competition begins on Saturday for the following week.

Pessimism grows as NHL labour talks stall CHRIS JOHNSTON Canadian Press

TORONTO - Pessimism is growing around the NHL’s stalled collective bargaining talks. With no future negotiations scheduled, the league is getting close to another round of game cancellations that will further shorten any

potential season. Asked on Thursday if the labour dispute had yet put the entire year in jeopardy, deputy commissioner Bill Daly replied: “I hope not.” “But I’m more discouraged now than I have been at any point in the process,” Daly added. The NHL is expected

to start wiping games beyond Nov. 30 off the schedule early next week. There had previously been hope for a shortened 68-game season starting Dec. 1, but that now appears to be gone. In total, the lockout has already forced the cancellation of 327 games, including the

Winter Classic between the Maple Leafs and Red Wings at Michigan Stadium. The league’s other big mid-season event - the Jan. 27 allstar game at Nationwide Arena in Columbus - is also expected to be formally cancelled in the near future. Talks between the NHL and NHL Players’

Association have fallen silent one week after representatives from both sides met over six consecutive days in New York. They broke off after last Friday’s bargaining session ended with a heated exchanged and a meeting on Sunday afternoon lasted barely more than an hour.

Stampeders QB Drew Tate out of West final with arm injury Donna Spencer Canadian Press

CALGARY - The Calgary Stampeders’ soap opera of a week took another dramatic turn with the news quarterback Drew Tate is out for the rest of the season with a fractured forearm. Kevin Glenn will start for the Stampeders in Sunday’s West final in Vancouver versus the B.C. Lions. Tate was sidelined 14 of 18 regular-season games because of a shoulder dislocation. In just his third game back, Tate fractured a bone in his throwing arm during the third quarter of Sunday’s divi-

sion semifinal versus the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The 28-year-old finished the game and threw a 68-yard touchdown pass to Romby Bryant with 20 seconds to go for a 36-30 win. But Tate says he felt pain in his arm prior to that drive. Tests confirmed a broken bone in his lower right arm. “I guess 2012 just wasn’t my year,” Tate said following Thursday’s practice at McMahon Stadium. “One door closes. Another opens and the opportunity is now Kevin’s. Kevin will take advan-

tage of it and I think our team will respond.” Glenn went 9-5 when Tate was sidelined during the season. “We won 10 out of the last 12. Kevin started eight of those wins so we’ll just move on,” Stampeders coach and general manager John Hufnagel said. It’s been one thing after another for the Stampeders this week. Tate’s head and not his arm was the issue after Sunday’s game. When the quarterback said during postgame interviews that he couldn’t remember the first half, that sparked fears he’d suffered a con-

cussion. The quarterback issued a statement the following day saying he’d been misunderstood. Just as that fire was getting put out, Calgary receiver Nik Lewis posted this questionable tweet on his Twitter account: “I just bought OJ’s gloves on eBay. Now all I need is a white girl named Nicole.” He added the hashtag #MaybeALittleToFar. The reference was to the 1995 murder trial of former NFL player O.J. Simpson, who was asked in the courtroom to put on leather gloves found at the crime scene.

GSP heads to hotel for fight in Montreal backyard Neil Davidson Canadian Press

MONTREAL Georges St-Pierre may be fighting at home this weekend but he’s not sleeping in his own bed. The UFC welterweight champion has moved into a hotel, leaving the comforts of home ahead of Saturday night’s UFC 154 main event with interim title-holder Carlos (Natural Born Killer) Condit at the Bell Centre. He wants no part of the hometown feeling, other than to have friends and family in the stands.

“At this time, I try to isolate myself, not get sick—not catch cold or stuff like that. Stay very focused on the main goal.” Georges St-Pierre “I want to feel like it’s another fight, like normal,” he said. The move has cut into his privacy. Fans in the lobby have pretty much restricted his ability to leave his hotel room. But that plays into another priority ahead of the fight. “At this time I try to isolate myself, not get sick - not catch any cold or stuff like that. Stay very focused on the

main goal,” St-Pierre told reporters. The fight is the first for St-Pierre (22-2) since April 2011 when he beat Jake Shields. He underwent reconstructive surgery after injuring his knee in training last fall. Condit (28-5) defeated Nick Diaz in February to claim the interim title during StPierre’s injury layoff. After Friday’s weighin, when he has to make 170 pounds, St-Pierre’s immediate plan is to “eat and drink.” An ice cream is high on his priority list. Both main event fighters attended a public workout at a local nightclub Thursday, although St-Pierre did little other than sign autographs and give fans some training gear. He says his training is done for the fight so it makes no sense having a session just for show. Using golf as a metaphor, he says he has already hit the ball. It’s in the air and he can’t influence it any more. “Even if I were to do 100 push-ups, I’m not going to get any stronger,” he said. “So it’s all in the mind. My training is done. “There is nothing I can do to be stronger, sharper, better than I am. The only thing I can change is my mind, so I try to stay positive and enjoy every second of it. Even though there is a lot of stress.”

Lewis’s semi-sincere apology Wednesday obviously wasn’t enough for the Stampeder ownership group, which is the NHL’s Calgary Flames. He was much more contrite in both a printed and verbal statement Thursday. “I never would condone violence to anyone, especially women,” Lewis said after practice. “I made a mistake by making that comment on Twitter and I take full responsibility for that comment. “I would like people to know I am a better

person than that.” Lewis will donate his paycheque from Sunday’s game to the women’s emergency shelter in Calgary and the team will match the amount with another donation. Back to the quarterback plot, an X-ray on Tate’s arm earlier this week didn’t show cause for alarm, but he didn’t take any snaps Wednesday. Hufnagel had expected Tate to participate in full practice Thursday, but tests conducted later Wednesday found “a small fracture” that will take five to six weeks to

heal, the coach said. Tate wore a cast Thursday and says the injury occurred in the third quarter when he was tackled by Saskatchewan’s Tyron Brackenridge. “Brackenridge shoelace tackled me kind of rolling to our sideline and I just went down on it,” Tate explained. “It didn’t really bother me until before the last drive of the game.” Hufnagel had signed Tate to a three-year contract extension and jettisoned Henry Burris to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the off-season.

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Board of Directors is considering an application by Bradley Scriver to amend the Moyie and Area Land Use Bylaw. Wreck of 1908 steamship found in South Sask. River C ANADIAN PRESS

SASKATOON — Archeologists say they have found what they believe is the wreck of a steamship that sank in the South Saskatchewan River more than a century ago. The SS City of Medicine Hat hit telegraph wires that had been sub-

merged by spring runoff and then drifted into the Traffic Bridge in Saskatoon in 1908. The ship had been designed by a Scottish nobleman who wanted to establish a steamshipping empire in Western Canada. Horatio Hamilton Ross built the ship and

Tembec losses soar despite lumber recovery C ANADIAN PRESS

MONTREAL — Forest products company Tembec’s losses soared in the fourth quarter even though its lumber business enjoyed its best quarter in several years due to a gradual recovery in the U.S. housing starts that improved demand and prices. The Montreal-based pulp, paper and lumber producer lost $47 million or 47 cents per share for the quarter ended Sept. 29. That compared with a net loss of 17 cents per share or $17 million in the comparable prioryear period. The higher losses was largely due to a $50-million, non-cash impairment charge due to the idling in September of its pulp mill in Chetwynd, B.C., due to weak market conditions. A total of 115 employees work at the mill, which Tembec purchased in 2002. The high-yield pulp produced at the mill is used in printing and writing papers, paperboard as well as tissue and towelling. Production from Chetwynd, which had an annual capacity of 240,000 tonnes, was shipped primarily to Asia. Tembec’s sales in the quarter increased 5.2 per cent to $443 million from $421 million in the year-ago period. Adjusted pre-tax operating earnings (EBITDA) were $23 million compared with $19 million in the fourth quarter of 2011 and $27 million in the third quarter.

For the full year, Tembec lost $82 million or 82 cents per share, compared with a loss of $5 million or five cents per share in 2011. Sales were flat at $1.7 billion. Excluding the impairment charge for Chetwynd, the company’s high-yield pulp segment still lost $9 million in adjusted EBITDA while sales jumped 31.5 per cent to $100 million from $76 million in the prior year. Even though it is increasing prices and it will be operating its two lowest-cost facilities going forward, Tembec said it expects market conditions for highyield pulp to remain relatively weak. The specialty cellulose and chemical pulp segment earned $16 million on $167 million of revenues, down from $30 million on $180 million of revenues a year ago. Market conditions for specialty cellulose were stable while those for NBSK pulp were very weak, with U.S. dollar pricing reaching “trough“ levels, the company said, noting that the annual millwide maintenance outage at the Skookumchuck pulp mill also impacted the segment’s quarterly results. The company has some 4,000 employees, and operates market pulp, paper and wood product manufacturing units, and produces silvichemicals from byproducts of its pulping process and specialty chemicals.

decided to take his friends and family from Medicine Hat, Alta., to Winnipeg. Archeologist Butch Amundson says more than 1,000 pieces including ceramics, metal parts and tableware were found in August during work on the bridge. The artifacts were found about eight metres down in the sandy layer of river bottom.

Realistically, saying “no” might be more appropriate than letting yourself be overwhelmed. Tonight: A must appearance. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You have the ability to see beyond the obvious, and you often nix situations because of their likely ramifications. On the other hand, you know when to take a risk on something worthwhile. Friends often scratch their heads at your decisions. Tonight: Go for exotic. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) One-on-one relating becomes successful, if you go with the flow. You might feel as if you do not have enough energy to do everything you want to do. A loved one occupies your thoughts and interests. Tonight: Enjoy your space. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Work, tasks and your to-do list all catch up with you today. Tonight: Party the weekend in. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Though you might not be sure of your weekend plans yet, your mind could be long gone. Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My husband and I have been married for 16 years. We have two children, one with Asperger syndrome. Over the years, my sex drive has waned because of stress, age, work, children, etc. I try to make an effort to be intimate every week. I’ve seen a doctor to check my hormone levels, and we are already in family counseling because of our child. Additional counseling to discuss intimacy would be cost prohibitive. But, Annie, sometimes I just don’t feel like having sex. Rather than trying to “woo” me just a little, or even initiate sex when we have quiet time and our kids aren’t likely to walk in, my husband sits and sulks until I make the first move. He does this every single time. During one particularly stressful summer, I didn’t make any moves, and he ignored me for two months. He later admitted that he was just waiting to see how long it would take me to ask for sex. He finally apologized. My husband is otherwise a good guy. He helps around the house and with the kids. But he rarely talks to me unless the conversation has sexual overtones. I have told him that I would prefer more real dialogue -- which would, in fact, lead to more sex -- instead of being bombarded with sexualized comments. Once, he excitedly called me outside, and I thought he had something of import to say. Nope. He thought I looked nice in my shorts and wanted to grope me. I can’t just switch it on like that. And when I don’t respond, he becomes offended. I appreciate that he finds me sexy, and I know I could work on my libido, but why is it always up to me? Why do I get the guilt trip? What can I say to help him understand that I’m perfectly willing, but would also like him to pay attention to me when he doesn’t want sex? -- Some Talk, Please Dear Talk: Your husband sounds amazingly clueless. His behavior toward intimacy is passive-aggressive, and your resentment only undermines his attempts to have sex. If you cannot get him to understand this, please look into free or low-cost counseling through your church or United Way. It will be worth it. Dear Annie: A few years ago, we got a dog. Our next-door neighbor made it clear he didn’t like “ugly” fences, so we put up a smaller, aesthetically pleasing fence. The neighbor’s trees prevented us from placing it on the actual property line, so he gained a foot or so. I purchased climbing roses and planted them along the fence. The neighbor then planted an intrusive vine that is wrapping around my rosebushes. He also has tomato plants draping over the fence and heavy clay pots hung on hooks. It’s burning me up that they are so inconsiderate. The year before, we went away for a week, and while we were gone, they picked all our ripe cherries. What is the best way to deal with the situation? We’ll probably be neighbors for another 15 years. -- Wondering What’s Next Dear Wondering: You are much too accommodating, and your neighbor is taking advantage of you. We say put up a high, no-nonsense fence on your property line. If your neighbor objects, tell him, “Good fences make good neighbors.” Dear Annie: This letter is in response to “Letting Go,” whose boyfriend’s wife died three years ago, and he still has her things in the house. I married a widower and also found it strange that he had all of his late wife’s belongings in the house. But I am not threatened by these items. My husband’s first wife is only a memory. She was a truly wonderful woman, and I am very lucky to have this man in my life. I am accepted and loved by his first wife’s family. We still have a picture of her prominently displayed in our house. -- California Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. The value of standing in solidarity

I

read a story recently about Stu Rasmussen, who grew up in the small town of Silverton, Oregon (about half the size of Cranbrook), an hour south of Portland. He runs the local movie theatre, has worked as the cable guy, ran one of the first computer stores, and knows just about everyone in town. So far so good. But here’s the twist. In 1975, while Stu is watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show, he sees a transvestite and is intrigued. The image stirs something deep inside. Stu begins to change. First he paints his nails. Then he dresses up as female characters from the movies, such as Princess Amidala from Star Wars and the like. Next he starts wearing a padded bra, and before long, Stu is full out cross–dressing. It causes a stir in the town. Lots of folks just don’t know what to

make of it, or of him. People start whispering. Kids stop going to his movie theatre. His friends begin to wonder if there is going to be some kind of a backlash. So it was quite amazing when the people of this sleepy, fairly conservative little town elected cross–dressing Stu Rasmussen as mayor of Silverton in 2008, making him the first transgendered mayor in the USA. No one seems to be sure how this happened. I tend to think that the fact he grew up in Silverton was part of it. People went to church with him; they watched his movies; they had him in their homes installing their cable; they went to him for help with their computers. In short, they knew him, and because they knew him so well and for so long they simply accepted him. Not everyone. Some of the folks in town had a problem with him. The election was very close. Some didn’t vote

Rev. Yme Woensdregt for him because of their religious convictions; others because cross– dressing goes against their sensibilities. After the election but before his inauguration, a group from the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas, came to Silverton. (I’ve written about this group before who have elevated hate to a new level.) They came with signs such as, “God hates Silverton”, “God hates your mayor,” and others which I can’t mention here. They came to protest against Stu as an abomination. Stu encouraged people not to give them the time of day, but then

something else amazing happened. The townspeople staged a counter–protest. Lots of ordinary, everyday folks cross– dressed. Men dressed as women, grandmas dressed as men. Kids joined in. Liberals, conservatives, young, old, on this day in Silverton it just didn’t matter. They were determined to stand with Stu, to identify with him, to stand up for him. Near the end of Matthew’s gospel, Jesus tells a parable. All the people in the world are divided into two groups. To the righteous, the judge says, “Come, you who are blessed; inherit the kingdom prepared for you … For I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me. As you did it to the least of these my brothers and sisters, you did it to me.” (Matthew 25:31–36) This parable is

about God’s solidarity with us, and our willingness to live in the same way. You don’t stand in solidarity with other folks because they agree with you or because they look like you or believe like you. You stand with them just because we are all human. We stand together as fragile, vulnerable, and beloved children of God one and all. We confess that Jesus came and took on our life and our lot, identifying with us in every possible way, so that we might know God’s love and in turn identify with and love each other. How do we imagine “the least of these”? Those who are hungry, alone, naked, thirsty? Sure. But maybe even more, “the least of these” is simply anyone in need. On that day, the people of Silverton stood in solidarity with Jesus by standing in solidarity with Stu. In the same way as we can feed and shelter people for the sake of the gospel, these folks gave witness to the love of God by cross-dressing for the gospel.

NY exhibit focuses on Tiffany’s objects for houses of worship Weekday Morning/Afternoon

NEW YORK — Louis Comfort Tiffany was the quintessential tastemaker of the post-Civil War Gilded Age. He’s famous for his iridescent leaded-glass windows and lamps. But most of his commissions were for America’s houses of worship at a time of unprecedented churchbuilding. “Louis C. Tiffany and the Art of Devotion’’ is a new exhibit at The Museum of Biblical Art in New York City. It’s the first major show to focus exclusively on Tiffany’s religious output of altars, baptismal fonts, mosaics, windows and other liturgical ornamentation. It features 84 objects. Ten are stainedglass windows. The exhibition runs through Jan. 20. There’s also a luminous window at New York’s Temple EmanuEl of the Ten Commandments. The museum will lead tours to see it Dec. 6 and Jan. 9.

YOUR AD in the BULLETIN has staying power. has selling power!

With so many advertising mediums dividing the attention of potential customers, newspapers remain the most effective source for reaching consumers. Why? Simply put, newspapers reach more people, more often. Highly portable and highly visible, newspaper ads go with people and stay with them. That means your business is more likely to be on their minds when they’re in the market for related products or services. When it comes to spending your advertising dollars, make the choice that’s tried and true: newspaper advertising works harder for you.

Help

the SPCA With Cats!!

At the present time the East Kootenay SPCA is full, full, full with cats and kittens. Unfortunately the number of cats in our area, and in all municipalities is much greater than the numbers of loving homes. We have been doing our low-cost spay/neuter program for six years and still cannot see much reduction in the numbers of cats looking for homes. The spay/neuter program is to help lower income families keep their pets without the expense of having kittens and the problem of finding them homes. It is not an animal control method for wild or “loosely owned” cats. These are cats that wellmeaning, loving people feed. It is a fact that if a female cat is malnourished, she will not come into heat and therefore, will not have kittens. This is Mother Nature’s way of helping to control the cat population. This is what keeps the actual “feral cat colonies ” in the wild from over-populating. Last month we hosted an “adoption for donation” event to help some of the older cats find homes and that was a success. Nearer the end of November, we will be trying it again – this time a two for one event, if you pick an older cat or a cat that has been in the shelter for a long period of time. There will be more advertising for this event a bit later in the month. All these cats will be spayed and/or neutered!!!!! You will be asked to fill out a pre-adoption form. We have implement a new policy at the shelter. We ask people to phone ahead and make an appointment to surrender cats to our shelter. At the present time your name will be put on a waiting list. We realize this is not the best solution, but it is necessary. Then try your best to find a home yourself. We do not euthenize cats here to make room for more cats. If we get too over-crowded we get sickness from stress. I want to thank everyone who donates (so we can afford to alter animals), and our wonderful foster families (who take litters of kittens) and all the loving people out there who care about the animals. Wouldn’t it be great if we could be the first municipality that did not have a cat problem??
