Feds dedicate funds to Civic Centre improvements By Emily Wessel THE HERALD
reporter@merrittherald.com
The Merritt Civic Centre is set for significant upgrades in the new year with the help of a $128,000 investment from the federal government, OkanaganCoquihalla MP Dan Albas announced Thursday. “It’s nice to see some money coming into the city from the federal government,” Merritt Mayor Susan Roline said. “They recognize things we need to do and sometimes we can’t come up with all the funding.” The funding comes from the Harper Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund, which aims to distribute $46.2 million over two years in cost-sharing for repairs and improve-
ments to public buildings. “It seems everything that happens in Merritt happens in this facility,” Albas said in a speech to about 40 people. “The Civic Centre is an important part of community life, but there’s always room for improvement.” Some of those improvements include installing an audio-visual system, refinishing the existing floors and upgrading the centre’s main electrical system. “We have trade shows, and if all of a sudden the breakers go and somebody’s demonstrating a product, that really detracts from what they’re doing and potentially causes us business,” the City of Merritt’s Leisure Services Manager Larry Plotnikoff said. The City recently received a $5,500 dona-
tion from the Country Christmas Committee and the Nicola Valley Arts Council to upgrade the Civic Centre’s lighting, which will receive more help from the new funding. Albas said the city invited him on a tour through the facility to see what kind of upgrades it needed, and the money will be used to “modernize” the facility. Albas said he expects the biggest spinoff benefits to come from upgrading the centre’s kitchen facilities, which he said could attract conferences, weddings and more fundraisers to the centre. “Merrittonians would want to have events here, but because of the food safety laws, they need a commercial kitchen to be able to follow those regulations,” Albas said. “By having

a commercial kitchen here, you’re going to see more events that are catered locally, whether by a small business, family, or rotary club wanting to put on a fundraiser. I think that’s going to be a major
upgrade for this area.” The economic benefits also extend to the upgrading process itself. The City’s next step is to put out a request for proposals to local contractors for the electrical and
flooring work, among other upgrades. The city expects to begin renovations in January, during the centre’s slow season. Plotnikoff said the upgrades will work around events already booked in the new year.
“We’re happy to work around those events,” Plotnikoff said. “We aren’t going to cancel any event because they’re priorities. People have booked, paid their money, and their events are going to be held.”
Alleged fraudster scams local councillor Robert Robertson is also accused of using shady tactics to con others out of millions of dollars to give him $60,000 for a piece of the action on what turned out to be a property that was never available. “He’s got no scruples at all, that man,” Kroeker said Thursday, after the story broke. “He would take any opportunity that comes his way, and he knew I wanted a house real bad.” Robertson pitched the

plan for the new housing development in 2006, when Kroeker approached Metro for a new home to which he and his wife could retire, he said. That’s when Robertson allegedly told Kroeker he purchased the Coyote Bluffs property and the Kamloops firm was the developer. “I told him I was interested in putting a home
on it,” Kroeker said. “[Robertson] then went over the details with me and I picked out a lot from the subdivision plan and he started to do some work on the property.” Several contractors were also tricked after Robertson didn’t pay for geothermal drilling and for design work, he added. Kroeker said he was taken to the lot, where
Robertson showed him work in progress. Eventually, all the lots were earmarked to buyers who weren’t willing to pay a deposit until seeing construction. “They were smarter than me. They weren’t giving out money until they saw some houses start going up,” Kroeker said.

Local author releases third book By Phillip Woolgar THE HERALD
newsroom@merrittherald.com
Mike Bhangu hangs out at Merritt coffee shops most days vigourously typing away on his laptop. His flow of ideas has cumulated into four books, three of which are released to the public and one that is set to be made public next year. The last book would have been released this year, but Bhangu was sidelined after crashing his Jeep into a rock wall near Princeton. “I don’t remember being scared. I just remember thinking, as I’m driving into the mountain, ‘This is going to hurt,’ he said. “But, in life I’ve been through so many incidences that fear doesn’t trouble me anymore. And that is a part of the Sikh philosophy to which he strongly adheres in his writing. “There is nothing to fear. What is death but an entrance into another type of existence? Death isn’t the end.
Ideas such as these are expressed in his latest release Popular Ideas Broken and Rebuilt and in many of his other books. In his books, Bhangu discusses the differences between the contemporary Punjabi community and the Sikh community. “True religion isn’t about the material world, it is about the spiritual world. Many of his theories stem from political science and philosophy backgrounds, combined with original ideas. “I draw a lot of associations, he said. “But it’s all based on facts. It’s not just pulling it out of thin air. For Bhangu, having ideas and motivation to write, and then having the opportunity to market them, boils down to serendipity. In one such incident, Bhangu was writing at the Merritt Starbucks when he happened to meet the president of Radio Punjab 1110 AM, Canada’s largest Punjabi radio station.

REMEMBER WHEN?
Merritt author Mike Bhangu discusses his beliefs and his third book, Popular Ideas Broken and Rebuilt, on Radio Punjab 1110 AM in Surrey. He is now scheduled to appear on the show on a regular basis from 8 to 10 a.m., he said. Submitted
“That all came about because, one day, when I was releasing my first book, I was sitting in Starbucks and the president walked by and I had a question in mind that I thought he’d be able to answer. I said, ‘Hey, do you mind if I ask you a question?’ That first conversation led to frequent meetings as the pair happened upon each
other on multiple occasions as Bhangu was writing and the president stopped in Merritt when travelling through. “He listened to my ideas and he read my first book. One day he mentioned to me that he has all these radio stations. From there, a radio producer emailed Bhangu and asked him to come on the show.
“Now they would like me to come back on a regular basis. While Bhangu usually writes in coffee shops in Merritt, he also travels to Kamloops for an occasional change of atmosphere, he said. His last book was available at Chapters, but he said the promotional aspects of publishing on that level demanded too much
exertion after his accident. But his latest book is on createspace.com, where people can order an electronic copy for $15. People can receive it for free by “liking his Facebook page (facebook.com/pages/ author - mikebhangu. His next novel, to be released in 2013, is The Separation of God and Religion.
Robertson reportedly moved to Belize From Page 1 When Robertson came up with excuses for delayed development, people became wary. But by that time, it was too late. “I paid him for the lot, and then he took off with our money, Kroeker recalled. “I kept asking him, ‘Where is the house?’ He kept having excuses and then all of a sudden, he was just gone. This isn’t the first time the

alleged con man has taken off with a slew of cash, and now there is a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest. Blogs dedicated to exposing Robertson have attracted people telling their stories about how they have been duped, with one Torontonian reportedly losing up to $850,000. A woman in Penticton allegedly gave Robertson $250,000 for her lot and house that never came to fruition — and a Vancouver man said he
gave $500,000. Robertson also allegedly ran a business into the ground while working as a sales agent for them in Okanagan Falls, B.C. As an owner of the former business venture HomesDelivery, Marten Kroes knows all too well the alleged con man’s tactics. “Currently, he is still operating in Belize doing the same thing, he said in an email. “We have three or four more
people coming forward, currently, but it is a slow process. Global TV, which ran a story on Robertson in October, eventually contacted him in Belize, Kroeker said. “He just told them ‘You can go ahead and do what you want, but you can’t touch me, he said. Merritt Mayor Susan Roline said Robertson approached council to rezone the area to allow for the development.
“This alleged fraudster has travelled through the United States, up through Canada and happened to hit Merritt, she said. “He was in the process of trying to set up a modular home subdivision. Roline wasn’t mayor at the time. The victims say that all they can do now is hope the alleged million-dollar con man is caught, and expose his tactics, warning people of a potentially life-changing encounter.

Craigmont era ends with mill shutdown The flip of a switch and the ensuing silence signalled the end of mill operations at Craigmont Mines and the end of an era in the history of Merritt and mining in B.C. It was Friday, Nov. 26, when a small crowd of miners stood by, an informal guard dressed in green overalls, while 18-year employee Ray Archer pulled the switches. Also standing by were mine manager Bill Diment and representatives from Radio NL, the Merritt Herald and the Kamloops TV station. Many of the 52 remaining Craigmont staff present at the event were long-term employees.

HERALD OPINION Reality check on teen suicide
TOM FLETCHER B.C. VIEWS VICTORIA – If you find Premier Christy Clark’s campaign against teen bullying to be superficial or even self-serving, I’ve got news for you. It’s potentially worse than that. With the greatest respect to the family of Amanda Todd, her tragic case isn’t representative of teen suicide any more than it is typical of high-school bullying.

Passion is a part of being human, and of reporting Emily Wessel Merritt MINUTE While perusing the news minefield that is Twitter last Friday, I came across an interesting link to a story on the Vancouver Observer website tweeted by a friend and fellow reporter. The story was about a reporter in Selkirk, Man., a com-

munity of about 10,000 just a stone’s throw from my hometown of Winnipeg, who was allegedly dismissed for writing unfavourable stories about the politicians in the area she covered. Winzoski alleged she was let go for her “biased” reporting because she allegedly let her own interest in international affairs influence her story choice. I read several blog posts on Winzoski’s situation and, of course, they had many of the same elements: accusations against politicians, her rocky working relationship with Selkirk-Interlake Conservative MP James
Bezan, and her employer’s assertion she was let go because she wasn’t a good fit for the paper. Whatever the reason, the paranoia in these pieces was clear: there is no room for personal passion in the newsroom. As a new reporter, I don’t agree with that message. Yes, journalists are expected to be fair and accurate, and I think a level head and a tendency to ask questions incessantly is a good way to ensure that as much as possible. But I also know that some people can’t wait to catch you slipping up, showing bias, or making a mistake, and they can’t wait to point it out as harshly as

possible, as if it’s some great deceit or vindictive hypocrisy. When reporters make mistakes, it’s (usually) not because they’re arrogantly or sinisterly trying to pull one over on their readers/listeners/viewers. It’s because they too, unfortunately, are sometimes folly to the human condition. Many of the reporters I know passionately pursue stories because they contain elements that pique their interests. It’s a natural tendency to pitch or write the stories you’d want to read, and that is inherently self-interested. One of my passions is music writing,
and throughout college, I often found myself writing and producing pieces with an arts and culture slant. I wasn’t criticized throughout school for having an interest in those kinds of stories, although music admittedly tends to be far less controversial than federal politics. Regardless, the driving force behind news is finding stories that are new, and not writing stories that fulfil your personal agenda. I’ve been a full-time reporter for less than two months and I know that. I’m sure Winzoski, after two years of writing for the Selkirk Record, knew that too.

Whether or not Winzoski was let go from the Selkirk Record for reporting on issues that mattered to her or made an example of for burning a bridge with a valued advertiser, doesn’t change the fact that she, as a reporter, was heavily scrutinized for any inkling of bias or for mistakes. And that’s something I’m learning to be more and more wary of. Of course it’s fair to ask us to be fair, and believe me, it’s what we (sometimes painstakingly) strive for. But to ask us to leave our passions at the door? You might as well ask us not to be human.

YOUR OPINION Report release Merritt gas prices too high, ‘Kamloops better option’ disturbing Dear Editor:
From Page 4 A clearer and more disturbing picture emerges from the latest report of B.C.’s Representative for Children and Youth, Mary Ellen TurpelLafond. It’s a survey of 89 child protection cases from 2007 to 2010, where 15 kids killed themselves and the rest inflicted serious self-injury, in some cases repeatedly. The word “bully” does not appear in the report. It speaks of domestic violence, physical and sexual abuse, addiction, and runaways targeted by street predators. Three quarters of the kids were removed from their homes to protect them from their parents. More than half are aboriginal. Its key conclusion is that shifting traumatized and mentally ill teens from institutional care to foster homes isn’t working. Earnest but inadequately trained foster parents and social workers can’t cope with kids who need diagnosis, treatment and supervision. Without that, kids shuffled through foster homes an average of a dozen times in three years, with little attachment to home or school. Some were violent, no surprise given their formative years. I asked Turpel-Lafond about the B.C. government’s recent focus on bullying. She said it’s worthwhile, and there are parallels between Amanda’s case and more common teen suicides. One is isolation at moments of crisis. “Say you’re a middle-class parent with a child who hasn’t come out of their bedroom in six months, or you have a boy in foster care who’s in his 14th home,” she said. “They both want to kill themselves, so what do you do?” Ideally, you intervene and get them to a child psychologist. Parents or guardians who can’t afford $150 an hour can wait months for the Ministry of Children and Family Development to arrange it. And in the meantime, our supposedly family-based foster care system sends them to school. “I’m really worried about how [school-based anti-bullying programs] will affect the most vulnerable kids, because you start anonymously reporting someone as being a bully,” Turpel-Lafond said. “Yeah, we know they’re in the youth justice system. We know they’re troubled. By the way, they’ve been sexually and physically abused, jumped through 30 foster homes, and now we want to label them again?” This is not to suggest that the existing B.C. effort isn’t substantial. The ministry reports that there are 2,221 front-line staff positions, of which 219 are currently vacant. It’s notoriously difficult to recruit, train and keep child protection workers, especially in remote communities. Turpel-Lafond says her latest figures show the child and youth mental health service has 476 staff, with 21 vacancies and a government-wide hiring freeze. And many of those are doing double duty as community service managers. Those managers don’t even have reliable data on case loads, she said. They just know they’re overwhelmed and many of the kids aren’t being reached. This is not about political blame. I can trace this problem back to when Grace McCarthy was children’s minister, and the NDP did no better. I’ve learned a bit about Riverview and Tranquille, asylums that were closed because of a modern belief that they were inhumane. At least they offered safety and medical care to even the most damaged people. Right now our enlightened, progressive society can’t even help most of the kids we know are at high risk. It’s about time we did something about our high gas prices in town. Did you notice that just a few people made the gas prices fall by about six cents a litre in one day, but the prices are still a rip off when you compare Kamloops prices to Merritt’s. Kamloops prices today are 109.9 for regular and premium is 117.9. Why are ours still way to high? Let’s form a group and force this monopoly down. Neither federal nor provincial governments will do anything, as the
higher the gas prices, the more taxes they collect. The NDP want to do nothing as they’re in line to win the next election. They say to stay and shop local. I would love to do that but in the long-run it’s cheaper to go to Kamloops, bring my jerry cans, fill up with gas, propane — and, heck, why not stop at Costco and fill up with groceries as well? All the way around it’s cheaper to go there and make a nice day of it. J`aime Etchart Merritt
Moving because of gas prices Dear Editor: In regards to the article about Merritt gas price gouging. Yesterday I heard from the Kamloops media that the stations have now reduced the price to 124.9. Well too little too late, we have not purchased fuel in Merritt for about a year now. This tiny price reduction does nothing for the city, as we do not shop here anymore due to the cost of fuel.
We can go to Kamloops, fill up the tank, and gas cans, fill our grocery needs, clothing, and entertainment, have dinner, a whole lot cheaper than here. Why even live here? Just another good reason we are selling and moving on — too bad, but Merritt is a dying town, fueled by high gas prices. Linda Venator Merritt
Cohen addressed salmon poaching Dear Editor: Re: Salmon mystery far from solved (B.C. Views, Nov. 14). Discussing the Cohen Commission report on the decline of Fraser River sockeye salmon runs, Tom Fletcher writes, “Poaching on the Fraser? Cohen didn’t get around to that.” This is inaccurate. In Volume 2, Chapter 2, Page 35, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Bruce Cohen states: “I am also concerned that Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) does not estimate illegal or unauthorized catch to use in its management of the fishery. This information could
be helpful to fisheries managers in a variety of ways — for example, in directing enforcement activities, allocating fishing access, and providing post-season accounting of returns.” Justice Cohen goes on to say: “I accept the evidence of those witnesses who said that conservation is best served by proactively preventing fish from being taken illegally from the water. Preventing the illegal taking of fish will likely involve a combination of community education and stewardship and onthe-ground enforcement activities. “Effective catch monitoring of all sectors is an important component

of this plan, as is the realistic allocation and identification of food, social and ceremonial fish to Aboriginal groups. I do not want to suggest that after-the-fact investigations are not also important; they are. Indeed, enforcement activities aimed at illegal sales may provide an effective deterrent to taking fish illegally out of the water.” On page 54 of the same volume: “In my view, preventing the illegal taking of fish should be the priority consideration when DFO is faced with focusing its resource expenditure within any of the three pillars.” John Newcomb Victoria

Charity aiming for 400 shoebox donations By Emily Wessel THE HERALD
reporter@merrittherald.com
Merrittonians are getting generous leading up to the holidays, and Operation Christmas Child is one more way people can make charitable donations this year. Sue Peachey is the co-ordinator for the shoeboxes full of gifts. She said she’s hoping to fill at least 400 shoeboxes with gifts before sending them to children in South America in December. Peachey said her experience volunteering at an orphanage in Tanzania six years ago inspired her to continue her work, and she has been co-ordinating the shoebox drive in Merritt for five years. “I head it up because it’s dear to my heart,” Peachey said. “I’ve been to parts of Africa and South America and you see these children who have nothing. For them to even get a candy is something. That’s why I like to do it, to see kids who have nothing get a gift.” Operation Christmas Child is an international campaign organized by Samaritan’s
Purse. The program operates in ore than 100 countries. This year marks the 20th anniversary of North America’s participation in the program, and the organization is hoping to send its 100 millionth shoebox overseas this year. The shoeboxes are free to pick up, and once they’re filled with school supplies, toys, hygiene supplies, clothing and hats, Greyhound Canada sends them for free to the main depot in Calgary where they’re distributed to various parts of the world. This year, B.C.’s donated shoeboxes will go to South America.
Peachey has found a lot of help organizing the campaign this year, especially in the form of Grade 6 student Grace Bergmann. Bergmann held a garage sale in September to raise money to put together more than her family’s usual four shoeboxes for the campaign, and she raised enough money for an additional 18 shoeboxes this year. Bergmann was also invited to speak to a Grade 6 class about social action. “I like that it makes an impact,” she said on choosing Operation Christmas Child as the recipient of her fundraising.
Even with Bergmann’s additional boxes, Peachey said the the organization is always short on boxes for teenagers, especially teenage boys. Peachey said she also encourages people to put a note or family photo in their donated boxes. “These kids are so curious about who was thinking about them enough to send them a gift,” Peachey said. Boxes are available for pickup and drop off at any of the city’s churches, Dollar Mart, Curves, Merritt Bench Elementary School, and the Greyhound Bus Depot. The deadline for donations is Sunday.

SD 58 iPad project success so far Merritt Central Elementary is the test market for NicolaSimilkameen School District 58’s iPad project, which put 80 of the Apple tablets in its intermediate classrooms in September. How well the tablets work to promote literacy and learning in the schools will determine whether or not the project will expand into the district’s 10 schools, but so far, it’s looking promising, according to District Computer Support Co-ordinator Jason McAllister. “This is the group that we’ve started with from the ground up,” he told school board trustees in a school board meeting on Nov. 7. “This will tell us the most about expanding the project in the future.” McAllister said the pilot project hit a few snags in the beginning, including licensing issues with mass application installations, but that teachers and students are finding the device useful. “They have been using them in a variety of ways, whether it’s spelling or math or phonics,” McAllister said. He told trustees the tablets have been proving particularly useful with students with learning disabilities, indicating a slideshow photo. “This is a kindergarten non-verbal student using it to learn about feelings,” he said. “In this example, she was learn-
“This has been ready to go in the last two weeks and is being used constantly,” McAllister said. He also said SD 42 (Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows) reported increases in reading fluency in Grades 3 and 4 students after a similar program with iPods, with one class getting every student but one up to grade level after four months. The project is starting
with primary grades and the school district is looking at ways to expand it to higher grades in the future, though no timeline was available by press time. SD 58 Supt. Bob Peacock said one option is to subsidize individually owned iPads by parents and the district, which would let each student take an iPad from grade to grade. “We know we have dollars set aside for tech-
nology,” Peacock said. Board members said the iPad program is an evolution of SD 58’s laptop program, which they said has run its course. “There’s no downtime like with a traditional computer,” McAllister said. “In a 10-minute break, it might not have been worth it to wait five minutes for a computer to start up and then three minutes to shut down. With an iPad, you’re ready to go.”

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS
Update from former Herald editor JADE SWARTZBERG Life After MERRITT A few weeks ago I heard some country music and felt a tiny bit homesick (if it’s possible to feel homesick while drinking a papaya smoothie in a laid-back beach town on the Caribbean Sea). Since I left Merritt nearly two months ago, I’ve visited four countries in Central America (Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and
Belize), stayed in nine different hostels, taken coach buses, chicken buses, taxis and boats, and had all sorts of amazing experiences. Travelling with my best friend from high school, I toured lots of gorgeous Catholic cathedrals in historic colonial cities, went zip lining above the jungle, tried kayaking in a lagoon surrounded by mangrove trees home to howler monkeys, explored Mayan ruins, went snorkeling in the Caribbean Sea, and ate a whole lot of rice, beans and tortillas. Touring Central America in this style wasn’t always easy — we were travelling on a limited budget and spoke very limited Spanish — but things always worked out for us in the end. For example, when our bus was turned around near the El Salvador border, we found
another English speaker we could tag along with, which helped when we ended up in a different city from the one we set out for. Even while it was often apparent that we were far from home — the security guards all carry machine guns or machetes and buses often carry animals as well as people — there were traces of familiarity to be found. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, I often saw our easily recognizable chapels dotting the landscape and even the occasional pair of young missionaries with their white collared shirts and black name tags. Besides that, there were the fast food chains, Wal-Mart, Carly Rae Jepson’s “Call Me Maybe” playing in every car and at every restaurant, and cowboys.
Of all the places I visited during my month-long adventure, it was in western Honduras that I thought of Merritt the most. Farming and ranching appeared to be among the dominant industries in the area. However, instead of the flat farmland that I am used to seeing, the Honduran farms followed the shape of the landscape with crops growing across the rolling hills. Cows were also numerous and could be seen grazing in fields and occasionally walking down the roads. But what stuck out the most was that almost all the men sported cowboy hats, blue jeans with belt buckles and cowboy boots, and this made me smile. My adventure is over, and I’m living at the “coast” now, but I just wanted to send an update and let y’all know that I will always think fondly of my time in Merritt.

Merritt golfer Roger Sloan has made it to the third and final round of qualifying for the 2013 PGA Tour — the most prestigious level of professional golf in the world, featuring stars like Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Justin Rose, Bubba Watson and, yes, Tiger Woods. Sloan, 25, earned a trip to the final qualifying stage, which will be held in LaQuinta, Calif. from Nov. 28 to Dec. 3, by finishing in a six-way tie for 12th at the PGA’s second-stage qualifier in Humble, Texas, last week. Sloan shot rounds of 72-69-67-72 at the Redstone Golf Club in Humble, a suburb of Houston, to finish at eight-under-par 280, six shots behind the winners — Franklin Corpening and Patrick Reed, both from Texas. “It [Redstone] is a course I’ve become quite familiar with over the last two to three months,” Sloan said on Monday. “The first round, there was a little bit of nerves. I took a bit more of a defensive approach than I normally would. The second and third rounds, I settled into a bit of a groove and played quite nicely. The final round was arguably the toughest round of golf I’ve ever had to play. The pressure that was riding on each and every shot. Your career is hanging in the balance.” The Merritt golfer credited experience and increased maturity for his success at this year’s Q-school after failing to get past stage one the previ-

ous two years. “This year, I understood the process a lot more,” he said. “I understood what I needed to do, and what I needed to look after. The first two years at Q-school, I think that there was a bit of naivité and possibly immaturity on my part. This time around, I think I was prepared for all scenarios — good or bad.” At the PGA Q-school finals in California, Sloan and approximately 160 other aspiring golfers will play a grueling 108 holes (six rounds) to determine who will get one of the coveted 25 places in next season’s PGA Tour. Sloan is undaunted by the big numbers and long odds. “It’s one of those things you have to go through to get to the next level. In my mind, it’s no different than four years of college, or 13 years of grade school. You just have to stay focused, and maintain your commitment to the process.”
SWINGING FOR THE BIG LEAGUES Merritt’s Roger Sloan (shown playing in Venezuela last year) will be in LaQuinta, Calif. next week for the third and final stage of PGA qualifying school. Sloan will be attempting to win one of 25 coveted places on this coming season’s PGA Tour which features players like Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods. Herald file photo
