❚ ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Grand Forks forms its own downtown business group

CASSANDRA CHIN Gazette Reporter

A downtown business association has been created with a vision on how local businesses can improve the downtown core. Business owners and managers of downtown Grand Forks gathered to discuss the formation of a downtown business association on Nov. 13. Carole Lajoie, owner of Value Drug Mart, acted as a moderator to facilitate discussion on the future of downtown Grand Forks and what direction the group would like to head. “The thing that became clear was that we really needed a downtown association and a group that is focused on what goes on in downtown Grand Forks,” she said. “We started by defining what we felt was downtown Grand Forks. At (an earlier) meeting, we also discussed what issues we’d like to address and one of issues was that we needed Grand Forks to look better and appealing for people who come into town.” The defined area is from 72nd Avenue to 75th Avenue, from Riverside Drive over to 5th Street, with a small portion of Central Avenue to 6th

Street. “We want to put together a core group of people who would be interested in being on a board or advisory capacity,” Lajoie pointed out. “We’re starting this as a volunteer downtown business association.” Lajoie explained she attended a meeting hosted by the Economic Development Advisory

Committee (EDAC) last August. “The EDAC brought in Barb Haynes from the Penticton Business Improvement Association to speak to merchants who had businesses downtown and to talk about what they are doing in Penticton because they have an active group of businesses,” she explained. “There wasn’t a lot of people there but the group of us that were there, and were motivated by what we heard, got together in September to talk about what we wanted to see in Grand Forks.” There were two meetings that followed the Haynes forum, but Lajoie noted it was apparent in the second meeting that the group had to do a better job at communicating with the businesses downtown. “We want a group that is specifically focused on issues that affect us downtown. That’s our mandate,” Lajoie went on to say. “I’d love to see the day when downtown Grand Forks is a happening place and people want to come downtown because Grand Forks is a really cool little community with lots of neat businesses, and services, and interesting things going on.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Marjean Fichtenberg was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal for her work done in establishing rights for victims of violent crime. She was presented the medal by Mayor Brian Taylor, by authority of the queen, at the Grand Forks city council meeting on Monday. She was nominated by Joe Wamback of the Canadian Crime Victims Foundation in Toronto, Ont. “I don’t feel this medal is all mine because I have so much support from so many wonderful people, including my family, my daughter and my grandson, all the courageous people and brave people who have shared their stories and allowed me to take their stories to the government so that I could try and make a difference for victims of violent crime,” Fichtenberg said, after receiving the medal.

Downtown business association forms Continued from page 1

Lajoie noted ideas and brainstorming were required to form a communication plan, followed by a budget plan through a board, before everything will be discussed with the main group. Some questions were raised as to why the Boundary Country Regional Chamber of Commerce (BCRCC) had not been taking charge of creating the group, though they have been assisting with the formation of the association. BCRCC executive director Sarah Winton clarified the BCRCC is a regional chamber that is focused on a larger area. “The reason it’s not the City of Grand Forks Chamber of Commerce is because it’s not financially viable. We have a small community and population base and membership numbers do not support a chamber of commerce,” Winton explained. “It’s regionally based because we have larger numbers and theoretically a larger membership base that will support a chamber.” Winton pointed out the chamber’s mandate is to work regionally but they can provide support services and resources. “We can help facilitate meetings such as this to bring people together, but (the BCRCC’s) focus needs to be on regional initiatives and projects,” she said. The City of Grand Forks’ chief administrative officer (CAO) Doug Allin explained the city is working on its strategic plan, including the downtown rejuvenation plan, to see what the city can bring forward. “We’re currently working on a budgetary program,” he said. “But the council would like to meet with the business association to talk about what these plans will look like.” When Allin arrived from Peachland to assume

the CAO position, he noticed there were several services the city was lacking, including graffiti removal. “Upon talking to council, it has been suggested there be an ability (to provide) a can of paint or using restorative justice to clean up the buildings,” he added. “Another initiative city council is discussing is suggesting a bunch of options so we can get our house in order downtown. We have a responsibility to the community in regards to garbage cans, light poles and fibre optic pieces. We’re bringing forward a menu of business items to city council but we would also look at it through the business perspective. That will give this group a foundation to work on.” Allin noted some ideas suggested include finalizing the fibre optics business plan to draw businesses to the downtown core and working on the tax exemption bylaw. “It’s about how can we provide some opportunities for businesses downtown to improve that won’t cost them,” he concluded. “What we’d like is to bring forward for the group to pick, and not the staff and council picking it. It would be you guys coming up with a consensus of what you would like to do to,” he said. During the meeting, a board and advisory group were created to discuss further options. The next meeting is planned for sometime in January or early February. The board consists of Lajoie from Value Drug Mart, Cheryl Savai from Thistle Pot Gifts, Dale Best from Work n Play, Cathy Boisvenue from Grand Forks Home Hardware, Dave Bachmier from Neighbours Computers, and Donna Soviskov from Joga’s. Coun. Gary Smith is the City of Grand Forks liaison and Winton will be the liaison for the BCRCC.

The state of Washington held a marijuana-related referendum during the recent U.S. presidential election. According to reports, Washington Initiative 502: Legalize Marijuana referendum saw 55 per cent of voters saying yes with 45 per cent saying no. The marijuana issue is a divisive one and Grand Forks city council voted 5-2 to not support the Stop the Violence BC campaign, which is in favour of strictly regulating and taxing taxation of cannabis. The Gazette asked Coun. Neil Krog, who voted against Stop the Violence BC, and Jim Leslie, a federally-licensed medical marijuana patient and president of Life-Line Medicinal Cannabis Dispensary, some questions related to the topic. Do you think marijuana will eventually be decriminalized in B.C.? Krog: Eventually it may be decriminalized but not for the reason that people are touting: reduction in crime, etc. People in B.C. are pushing for legalization and taxation and I have always stated that I do not believe that it will work. As soon as Washington passed its referendum, advocates in B.C. were saying the province will be left behind. In fact I think it is good that Washington will be trying the legalization and taxation method first because B.C. can watch and see if it works, which if it does not, it will save us a lot of grief and problems. Leslie: Yes, and to be clear, “decriminalization” removes criminal penalties for simple marijuana possession, it does not address the regulation and taxation of marijuana but is a great first step. Thoughts about the referendum results in Washington state. Leslie: Finally, science and rational public policy triumphed over fear and propaganda when the citizens of Washington state struck a significant blow against organized crime by voting to regulate and tax adult use of marijuana. This is long overdue and it can no longer be said that the U.S. federal government will shut down the border if we do the same in Canada. Krog: I find it hard to believe the argument made by advocates that

Coun. Neil Krog

crossing the border will be easier now. Both the Canadian and U.S. border services are FEDERAL; both sides will not recognize Washington’s choice. So I think the decision will make it harder to cross the border from either side. What effect do you think the Washington situation will have on B.C., particularly in this area? Krog: Another huge flaw in this decision is the fact that it will be legal to possess but they will not produce, regulate or tax for one year. Ask yourself the following questions: So where is everyone going to get the dope from? Organized crime? I thought this measure was supposed to stop that. Is B.C. going to increase trafficking to meet the new measures? Of note I do not believe recreational users will be too happy with the increased cost. If Washington is going to tax 25 per cent at each step, from production to consumer, it could double the current illegal price, so how will that make illegal sales go away? The new under-the-influence will have a huge impact on both countries’ recreational users as they will not be able to drive even if they have not recently used. Leslie: Washington voting to tax and regulate has already provided a big lift to those in B.C., and other parts of Canada, who are working to tax and regulate marijuana. The Sensible B.C. (www.sensiblebc.ca/) campaign is a way for British Columbians to vote in a provincial referendum in 2014 to alter the BC Police Act so that no police resources would be available to investigate simple marijuana possession by adults. Eventually, Washington’s situation will impact B.C.’s illegal marijuana export market. While it is not clear how much of the estimated $7 billion would be lost, this could potentially negatively impact the economies of B.C.’s rural cities and towns, which illegal marijuana money has traditionally helped keep afloat in tough times. B.C. needs a strategy to transition the current black market marijuana industry into a job-creating, taxed and regulated environment. If the Harper government removed marijuana from Schedule 2 of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, the provinces would be free to regulate marijuana as they saw fit.

❚ Our View

Downtown businesses must work like team There was a meeting relating to downtown Grand Forks last week and a downtown business association was formed. Spurred by an Economic Development Advisory Committee meeting featuring the Penticton Business Improvement Association’s Barb Haynes last August, the group will focus on what happens in downtown and that is good. People have complained about empty storefronts downtown and lack of communication between businesses that can sometimes happen and having a singular unit that will help with this is also good. The defined downtown area is from 72nd Avenue to 75th Avenue, from Riverside drive to 5th Street with part of Central Avenue to 6th Street and there are a lot of businesses situated there. Probably a number of different ideas on how to improve the downtown core and how to increase traffic (both local and tourist) will come forward and hopefully downtown businesses will share these ideas as the association builds itself from the ground up. Going forward however, the most important thing is for all downtown businesses to work together and in fact, one of the things Haynes mentioned back in August was the need for businesses to get involved together – it can’t be one business trying to do everything by itself. This is a team initiative and businesses should be willing to act like a team and put the interests of the team first. Having different ideas about how to improve the downtown core or how to revitalize the downtown core is to be expected and the more new ideas the better. Last summer during the airport appreciation/ fly-in, Market Avenue was closed off and became a pedestrian mall, with a shuttle bus shipping people in from the air show to shop around and it was successful. The buzz that is generated during events like the Santa Parade show that the downtown core has potential but businesses have to work in unison. Downtown Grand Forks and what is best for it should always be at the forefront. If it takes a village to raise a child, it will take the combined effort of downtown businesses to improve the downtown core.

Question of the Week

from www.grandforksgazette.ca Will a year off to regroup benefit the Rail Trail 200 International Sled Dog Race?

YES 72%

‘Tis the season for all things crafty, baked and homemade. As shops pull out the decorations and stock up their shelves, around the community there are many art-oriented events gearing up for the holidays. This past weekend, Christina Lake’s Arts and Artisans Society hosted its Chocolate and Champagne fundraiser, full of deliciously crafted treats, while Greenwood’s library held its annual arts and craft fair at the McArthur Centre Community Hall, full of homemade goods. This coming weekend is gallery 2’s annual wine tasting, as well as Grand Forks’ Royal Canadian Legion’s craft sale and a grad bake sale from the Grade 12 students at Grand Forks Secondary School. As the years go on, I find myself drawn more to handmade gifts (whether by me or

❚ A Chin Up

someone else), as opposed to buying something specifically for a person, unless otherwise asked. Craft sales are a particular favourite of mine because it’s a chance to see how creative people can get with a ball of yarn or piece of fabric. There are also the yummy tidbits baked with care and tenderness from the kitchens of excellent cooks. And call me crazy, but I’ve already begun the process of collecting gifts for my family and friends. In fact, I’m almost done. Don’t get me wrong, no matter

how far in advance I plan, there will always be someone that has slipped my mind. It leads to one of those, “Oh, duh!” moments and shakes of the head that has you wondering how you could forget that person. But in all honesty, though I occasionally enjoy walking down busy streets and crowded shops, the hustle and bustle that comes with shopping is a bit too much for my tastes. I’ve never been a huge fan of walking through swarms of people, mostly because, at my height, it usually results in me receiving several unintentional smacks to the head. When I know there is an event or occasion right around the corner, whether it is a birthday to festive holiday, I like to prepare as far advanced as possible. But maybe that’s just me.

LETTERS z REMEMBRANCE

Ending all wars Editor: In six years the world will celebrate the centennial of Armistice Day. The Royal Canadian Legion, and other legions, should consider winding up their affairs, donate all of their paraphernalia to museums and, at the 11th hour, on the 11th day, in the 11th month of 2018, pass the torch not to another body to honour our war dead and their sacrifices but virile young hands and their dedication to a world order for peace. Our war dead will forever be remembered under crosses, gravestones and at memorials but it seems to me that a century of commemoration of two world wars presents an opportunity to renew dedication to world peace and that this become the legions’ worthy legacy. Otherwise it will all have been in vain. The sands of time erode all memory of events and ineluctably, remorselessly the same will happen for the two most egregious events ever perpetrated by human beings on each other – so far. The grim knowledge that this supposedly most enlightened of species is also capable of devising the most evil forms of destruction should be sufficient proof that we have not only the means but also an inherent streak in us to use them. How much more noble if Canada declared a disbanding of its war machine, declared itself a non-aligned and neutral state and got down to the increasingly urgent war against destruction of our home place – our land and our planet. Do not elect politicians who are not ready to stand for this. The vast treasure spent on arms would be dedicated to global education (despite primitive men who would shoot little girls who want to go to school), global health and welfare, global environmental protection and an assurance of sufficient food and clean water

for all of us. The balance to be spent on assuring sanctity for all the other organisms with which we share this place. Let’s strive to make the white poppy a symbol of renewed dedication to world peace. I have worn my red poppy and medal for the last time. Dave Milton, Grand Forks

More on questions

Editor: I am writing to correct a misunderstanding created by a Nov. 7 story in the Grand Forks Gazette and subsequent letter to the editor on Nov. 14. I believe the article created the impression that the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) board had decided to discourage or disallow public input and questions at RDKB board meetings. This is certainly not the case. Currently, members of the public are welcome to speak to issues at meetings as presentations at the opening of the meeting. As a courtesy, so as to enable planning for the meeting, they are asked to contact the RDKB in advance to be included on the agenda. At the beginning of the meeting, any items dealing with planning and development, which might involve questions or comment by interested parties are moved to the front of the meeting and affected parties are allowed to provide their input at the time of the decision. Finally, at the conclusion of the meeting, members of the press or the public have an opportunity to address the board on items on the agenda or to ask questions. What transpired at the Nov. 1 meeting in Grand Forks was a discussion of a general procedural bylaw for how meetings are conducted. As part of this discussion, a motion arose during the meeting to allow an undefined “open mike” period at the onset of each board meeting. This

z OPINION motion was defeated and the whole bylaw was referred back to committee for further recommendations to the board. The intent is not to reduce public participation but how to make it productive and workable for the citizens and the board. The RDKB is committed to meeting the needs of the public and will continue to do so in the future. Larry Gray, Chair, RDKB

Small tenures anything but small in reality Community forests are commonly referred to as a “small tenure”, but their hopes and aspirations are anything but small. Community forests were created to support local livelihoods ALEX and to promote innovation and ATAMANENKO economic diversification. They also encourage communication and the development of relationships within communities and with First Nations. They provide opportunities for local training and skills development. Forest companies will change owners or come and go; however, community forests and the communities that manage them are here to stay. With area-based, long-term tenures, incentives are created for long-term investment in the land. It is in the interest of these communities to manage their local forests for a range of values, including local jobs, wildfire mitigation and community interface planning, recreation infrastructure and small scale, local bioenergy. There are five community forests in the B.C. Southern Interior riding – Kaslo, Harrop-Procter, West Boundary, Keremeos, and Princeton – and the accounts of benefits derived from their operations are growing steadily. For example, Kaslo contributed funds to build the new clubhouse at the Kaslo Golf Club, a timber-framed structure that also employed a local company for design and construction. Harrop-Procter is the first community forest with Forest Stewardship Council Certification. With its low annual allowable harvest and a focus on protection of watershed values, it has established a small mill to turn its round trees into dimensional lumber products. While community forestry holds great potential for B.C. communities, the economic and ecological changes facing the forest sector as a whole present significant challenges. The British Columbia Community Forest Association (BCCFA) is working to help its members manage for future success. At the recent BCCFA conference in Kaslo, delegates heard about the latest research on how to approach long-term forest management in the context of climate change. They learned about the importance of understanding and monitoring the patterns and impacts of local change and they were introduced to some practical tools to analyze their vulnerabilities and risk. The new insights and tools will assist community forest managers to adapt their decision making to future conditions. Community forests are seeking to diversify their operations and to capture more value for the wood harvested. WoodSourceBC.com is a new BCCFA initiative, which helps to attract a wide group of log buyers and value added manufacturers to the community forest product and to partnership opportunities. Value added manufacturing can provide as much as 10 times the jobs for each cubic metre of wood as can a primary breakdown facility. The higher value product can also provide for an alternative log market for community forests and other small tenures. Value added is a good deal for communities because it can contribute to new jobs, youth retention, economic diversification and community stability. For more information on community forests, visit www.bccfa.ca. – Alex Atamanenko is MP for the B.C. Southern Interior

What has to happen is that people have to store their garbage and waste properly.” The final issue is the costs of the bag liners for the green bins. Dueck noted a liner for a green bin is expensed at around 80 cents, whereas putting an extra garbage bag out is around $3. “The only other objection we’ve heard all over the region is, ‘What took us so long and when is it coming to Greenwood or Trail?’” said Dueck. “We don’t have a schedule for that, but in 2014, there will be major changes to the way recycling is done in the province of British Columbia.” He pointed out that the service is currently a municipal service, but that may change in 2014 when provincial regulations will compel the retail industry to look after their own product and packaging, including newspapers. The City of Grand Forks approved the expansion of the green bin food scraps recycling program to the rest of the city’s residences starting the first week of October. This program will follow the pilot project that the RDKB began in the Valmar subdivision of Grand Forks last January.

Truck from Armstrong found in Grand Forks On Nov. 12, there was a report at 10:08 a.m. of a company truck abandoned on Highway 3 near the Omega Restaurant in Grand Forks. Upon inspection, it was observed that the ignition had been tampered with and Grand Forks RCMP confirmed that the 1996 Dodge pickup was stolen from McLeod’s By-Products in Armstrong, B.C. “Nobody saw who left the truck there but it was reported stolen,” said Grand Forks RCMP Staff Sgt. Jim Harrison. “I’m assuming it was stolen out of Armstrong and brought here but it has been recovered.” Theft from vehicles There was a report of several thefts from vehicles around Grand Forks on Nov. 14. The first was reported at 9:29 a.m. when the complainant noticed that somebody had broken into their 1998 Dodge Car-

Collection of organic materials from the green bins in the first two months of the program has seen a big change in garbage management in Grand Forks. Tim Dueck, the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary’s (RDKB) solid waste program co-ordinator, noted the preliminary data has been amazing. “When I think about whether this has been a success or not, the ultimate matrix for us is the amount of garbage that is diverted,” he explained. “The important stat isn’t necessarily the participation rate or satisfaction rate, it’s the amount of material that we actually got in this green bin program.” In October, 17.5 tons (38,581 pounds) of garbage were collected from the curbside and 22 tons (48,502 pounds) of organic material was collected from the kitchen scraps alone, not including the yard and garden waste. Another 12 tons (26,455 pounds) of recyclables from the blue bags were also collected. “It basically speaks to what is most important about this program,” Dueck said. “This is not a garbage collection program, this is a waste management program and we’re trying to manage our waste a lot better.” Dueck pointed out people have complained about the costs of paying for the garbage and are missing the point of the program. “The point is that we’re managing the material we are getting on the curbside and being more responsible with managing it,” he added. There are three different issues that have come up since the program began and Dueck explained the first problem is that since it is a new program, everyone has to learn a new way of doing things. “There’s no doubt that what we’re doing is completely new and redefining what garbage is and that’s a bit of a learning curve,” he said. “Secondly, we’ve had concerns about bears and bear interaction. The truth is that the material that is in the green bin is the same material that’s in people’s garbage cans.

avan prior to 6 a.m. that morning along Riverside Drive. “There was no damage to the vehicle because it was unlocked but the contents of the glove box were rummaged through but it appears that nothing was stolen,” said Harrison. Another unlocked vehicle was entered on 2nd Avenue on the night of Nov. 13. It was later reported on Nov. 14. “Somebody had rummaged through his ashtray of coins and dumped them on the floor,” Harrison said. “They also rummaged through the glove box, took nothing and dumped the papers everywhere in the vehicle. It was obviously mischief but also attempted theft.” At 4:24 p.m., an unlocked 2007 Chevy pickup truck on 4th Street was also entered. Harrison noted the glove box was opened and its contents searched, and the complainant believes some change may have been stolen.

Chiropractor I have been getting fairly regular chiropractic treatments, now I am expecting, Is it safe for me to continue chiropractic care during pregnancy.

A.

Most definitely, especially if you have been having low back pain. Continuing with your chiropractic care will help keep those spinal aches and pains to a minimum. There should be no fear in getting your chiropractic therapy right up to delivery time. Even if you have not had any chiropractic care prior to pregnancy you could start your care for any low back or spinal aches and pains. The results may take longer if you have never had any chiropractic care previously. Nerve supply to the pelvis comes from the Sympathetic nervous system from thoracic 11, 12, and Lumbar 1 nerves, the Parasympathetic system arises from Sacrum 2, 3, 4, nerves. These nerves supply the pelvic organs which include the ovaries and uterus Afferent nerves from the uterus go to posterior roots of 10, 11, 12 thoracic spinal nerves These nerves allow the organs to function without our conscious having to tell the organs what to do. Eg. Breathing, keep your heart beating etc. Any misaligned or subluxation of the vertebra or pelvic bones will give rise to nerve pressure and may cause menstrual cramps, tendency to abortion, hormonal imbalance, or trouble becoming pregnant, plus other problems. As the time for delivery gets closer, the ligaments of the pelvis loosen to allow for the delivery of the child. It takes time for this to occur. It also takes time for the ligaments to go back to normal. During this time it is easy for the pelvic bones to twist enough to give the “sacro-iliac” slip, which in turn gives rise to backache. You have often heard of backache complaints after the delivery of a baby. After child birth mothers should have their spine and pelvis checked and corrected for any misalignments as soon after delivery as possible. Over the years, I have had patients receive their chiropractic care in the morning and deliver later that evening.

SD51 looks to replace Christina Lake school As a part of School District 51’s (SD51) five-year capital plan, staff are looking to replace Christina Lake Elementary School with a new school. Along with new buses, the school board hopes to replace the aging elementary school with a new school soon when the plan is submitted to the Ministry of Education by the end of the school year. “When I said we needed to replace our school (the ministry) thought we needed a new bus, but a new school has been on our plan for a while,” explained Jeanette Hanlon, secretary-treasurer to the SD51 school board. “It’s the school that’s been ranked, or was ranked, that it needed the most work and that it was replaceable. (Christina Lake) is the school that’s in the worst shape.” However, Hanlon noted that in order to get a school replaced on a capital plan, it requires a major process where money has to be spent

to have plans drawn up, including rationales on why the school should be replaced. “The ministry said that it could be up to five years before you get a school replaced,” she said, nothing that it may not be Christina Lake but it could be a different school that they may want to replace. “They said if you’re lucky enough to get it replaced next year we would be asking about all your other schools and you could change it from Christina Lake. But in order for us to put it on a plan, we would probably have to spend $10,000 to put it on the capital plan.” Hanlon added, “The (ministry) suggested rolling it over and look at our plan for the reports on all the assessments of the buildings. Basically, is there another school that needs replacing more than Christina Lake.”? The replacement of Christina Lake Elementary School was listed as year four in the five year plan, but Hanlon pointed out that it has been the boards plan to replace to school for many years.

Giving is the true spirit of Christmas and Discover Border Country Realty is launching its 16th Annual Coats for Kids and Needy Adults. Organizer Sharon Marshall stated that two full carloads of coats were delivered to the Grand Forks Christian Centre and were given away on Nov. 13 and 14 from the church. “Caring for our community is very important to everyone at Discover Border Country Realty and we decided that with the cold weather upon us, an early giveaway would help people needing the coats. “We are actively collecting coats and winter clothing and ask that they be dropped off at 347 Market Avenue,” Marshall said. People can also call 250-442-2124 and Discover staff will gladly pick up. “The people of the Boundary Country are unfailingly generous in their donations and we look forward to having many coats to give away midDecember!” she added. She said the Grand Forks Christian Centre has been very co-operative in giving out the coats and the Women’s Auxiliary to the Boundary Hospital has been extremely supportive as well. Mountain FM is sponsoring the 16th annual campaign as well. Submitted

A local esthetician is the best nail enhancement artist in the country after taking the 2013 Canadian Hairstylist of the Year award (Contessas) for nail design. Robyn Schwartz, proprietor of Polished & Pampered Hair & Esthetics, placed Top 5 in the same category last year and wasn’t going to be satisfied with that again. “Last year was my first year, so I think I had a little bit more insight as to what they were expecting to see and every year there are different judges, so you don’t know what you’re up against,” explained Schwartz. “It gave me a better perspective as to what I should be doing.” For every category there were specific looks that the judges were looking for and Schwartz said she based her entries on that. “I did a set of French nails (pink and white look), a set of polished nails and the third submission, they always want something wild and crazy so I did a big, long set of stiletto nails with flowers and glitter and they turned out really well,” she said, adding that the stiletto nails were about 7.62 centimetres long.

She said that she had to make photo submissions for the awards, which allowed her to hone everything. “It’s hard because you don’t know what (the judges) want. You’re hoping you’re doing the best work you possibly can and whatever you’re submitting, they’re going to like,” Schwartz explained. Schwartz was in Toronto for the

award ceremony on the weekend of Nov. 11, which she said was the Academy Awards of the beauty industry, and said that she wants to defend her crown next year. “It’s surreal, it still hasn’t quite hit me yet,” she said. “I always feel I need to do better for myself. This is so amazing but I know I can still do better, so I’m always just pushing myself.”

z SPOTLIGHT FILMS

Intouchables screening at Gem Theatre on Nov. 27 Submitted

On Tuesday, Nov. 27 Spotlight Films will be presenting the French film The Intouchables. After he becomes a quadriplegic from a paragliding accident, an aristocrat, Phillippe (Francois Cluzet, The Art of Love) hires a young man Driss (Omar Sy, Samurai) from a poor and working class district, to be his caretaker. When Driss, also a young offender, shows up for the interview for the posi-

tion of Phillippe’s caregiver he isn’t really looking to get the job. To his surprise, and the surprise of his assistant Magalie (Audrey Fleurot, The Women on the 6th Floor), Phillippe chooses him. The two men gradually form a very close friendship and both their lives are changed. This comedy/ drama – inspired by the actual story of Phillippe Pozzo di Borgo and his caregiver Abdel Sellou – is written and directed by Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano and has been nominated for

13 awards and has won seven (as of the date of the synopsis information). The awards include best actor for both Cluzet and Sy at the Cesar Awards and audience awards for Nakache and Toledano at the European Film awards. The Intouchables is subtitled (you are now forewarned) but the effort will reap rewards. The film will be shown at 7:30 p.m. at the Gem Theatre, again on Thursday, Nov. 27. Spotlight Films would like to thank its sponsors and supporters.

The 11th Street Kids Theatre’s Nov. 30 performance of Shrek will unfortunately be its last. Jean Pinto, or Jean Byrnell as she is now known, and Liz Mason, the founders of the youth theatre group, both felt that it was time to close the curtain, figuratively and literally. “It’s been 20 years,” said Byrnell. “That’s the only reason. We’re busy with other things. I wrote a sewing column for the Gazette for 20 years, so it must be a magic number.” “Our kids were young then and now they’re grown and gone,” quipped Mason. It is too hard for Byrnell and Mason to name a favourite production over the span of the 11th Street Kids Theatre’s existence but they have been impressed with the dedication of the kids and things always seem to work out. “The process is the neat part in any production,” explained Mason. “You have to take a huge leap of faith that you will have something that is presentable.” As the name entails, the group got its start at Byrnell’s old 11th Street house but it eventually moved on and so have the kids but according to Byrnell and Mason, taking part in the 11th Street Kids Theatre has many benefits.

“There are kids that certainly were not people that went on to do much with theatre in their lives but they said that when they stand up to give a presentation or are in a job interview, they just go back to that place in drama,” Byrnell explained. “It’s a skill that you keep with you your whole life,” added Mason. In order to aid with that, Mason and Byrnell stray from the usual style of scripts to ensure that kids get their fair share of the spotlight. “When you have a group of between 30 and 40 children, you want to do a piece that’s an ensemble piece, rather than having one star,” Byrnell said. “Jean makes it a point that every child gets at least a minimum of seven lines,” explained Mason. The final performance of the 11th Street Kids Theatre, which as mentioned is an adaptation of Shrek will take place Friday, Nov. 30 at the auditorium at Grand Forks Secondary School at 7:30 p.m. with admission by donation. Anyone who has ever taken part in the 11th Street Kids Theatre group will be invited onstage after the final performance and sing the final song, which is Neil Diamond’s (and not The Monkees’) I’m a believer.

Grand Forks Arena was an active place last Saturday, with the Grand Forks Atom 2 house team tying against Kaslo 5-5. Atom 2 house team head coach Craig MacLellan noted the team played against Kaslo last week and beat them 14-2. “I’m not sure if the kids took it for granted that we would beat them like last weekend,” he said. “I thought it was a great game. At times our kids played really, really hard and at times we sat back and let Kaslo decide how we would play.” Overall, there were several players who had really strong games, stated MacLellan. He also added there are no overtime periods in the league unless it is during the playoffs. “We are a small team: we only have 11 players – 10 players and a goalie,” he said. “Quick shifts are really important for our team. If we stay out there too long, they’ll get too tired and come the third period when it’s stop time and it’s a long period, sometimes we can run out of juice. So our goal is to get better with each game and to stay strong for the full 60 minutes and not burn out too early.” There are two co-ed Grand Forks Atom 2 house teams for children nine to 10 years old. “In the West Kootenay’s there is an Atom House and Atom A pool,” explained MacLellan. “Last year they decided to split the Atoms into two pools, an A team or a B (house) team. This year in Grand Forks we didn’t feel we had the caliber of an A team just yet so we looked at the number of kids we had and split them into two B teams so we’re playing in the house division.” MacLellan pointed out both house teams in

Grand Forks have played against each other since they are in the same pool “We’re trying to get the kids to learn that hockey is a team game,” he concluded. “It’s really hard to beat five other kids plus the goalie on the other team if you do everything by yourself. We try to incorporate each of the kids and encourage them to work as a team – when that happens, it will be a very successful game.” Grand Forks will be hosting playoff games in February, either to the top six Atom A teams or top six Atom B teams. The Grand Forks Atom B team will be playing a tournament in Nelson next weekend. In related news, the Grand Forks Bantam Rep Bruins beat Cranbrook 22-1.

In the story “Bruins shut out defending champs” in the Nov. 14 issue of the Gazette, it was mentioned that the team’s next home game was a designated one in Midway on Nov. 22 vs. the Chase Heat. In fact, the game in Midway vs. the Heat is on Nov. 24 and a home game against the Castlegar Rebels is on Nov. 22 at Grand Forks Arena.

Grand Forks peewee team finishes third in tourney last weekend

www.grandforksgazette.ca A19

Submitted

The Grand Forks Tier 4 peewee rep team placed third in a tournament in Osoyoos/ Oliver last weekend against stiff competition. The team travelled to South Okanagan to face off against 11 other teams: eight Tier-3 teams, two Tier-4 and one Tier-2 team. The Grand Forks peewee rep Bruins defeated Coquitlam 5-1, followed by North Shore Winter Club 8-3 to win its pool. They lost 3-2 to Holleyburn (the only Tier-2 team at tournament) in semifinals.

“You get better by playing better teams and I think we improved over the weekend,” said head coach Darryl Turner. “The players are starting to see how hard work can pay off.” In the game against Holleyburn, the peewee rep Bruins fell behind 2-0 early in the game and were badly outplayed in the first half. As the game went on, the Bruins got stronger and came back to tie the score. Holleyburn eventually scored with five minutes left in the game to win and advance to the finals. In the semifinals, the Bruins defeated Co-

quitlam 4-1 to finish third out of 11 teams, and have improved their overall record to six wins and eight losses so far this year. “It’s difficult to find Tier-4 competition close by so we end up playing up into a Tier-3 league and attending many Tier-3 tournaments,” explained Turner. “This can often get frustrating as success is not always understood by players, they just see a loss as a loss. It certainly was fun to travel to a tournament and compete well against a high calibre of talent and experience success.” The Bruins will be hosting the provincial playdowns from March 17 to 22.

Youth growing up in Grand Forks should get involved with the community. z View From The Pulpit BENJAMIN JEPSEN

Youth are a major part of our community and I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself as a pastor who is involved in youth ministry here in Grand Forks. Like my father, I was born and raised in Grand Forks, getting involved in the community and growing to love life here. This city has always been close to my heart and there has always been a place for me here. After graduating from Grand Forks Secondary School (GFSS) in 2006, I had the opportunity to attend Briercrest College and Seminary in Caronport, Sask. After four years of schooling, I received my BA in youth ministry and a minor in psychology. Near the end of my schooling, I was given the chance to come back to Grand Forks and work in the very church I had attended growing up. Without hesitation I jumped at the opportunity to come back to the town I love and in the fall of 2011, I started a full-time youth ministry position at the Gospel Chapel. In my graduating year at GFSS, I was asked dozens of times what I was going to do after graduation. It was that time of life when I had to start answering the questions of what I was going to be when I grew up. Some of my peers had a good idea of what was next, some wanted to just get out of Grand Forks, and others had no idea. The main thing we all had in common was the constant pressure to answer what was next in our lives. Youth are under incredible stress

and pressure throughout high school. For starters they have to decide what comes after graduation. Then they are faced almost daily with temptations to get involved in things like drugs and alcohol. Finally, they are bombarded with voices telling them they need to act and look a certain way to be cool, not only by media, but also from their peers and even parents! Where is the hope in all of this? My goal as a youth pastor in Grand Forks is to come alongside the youth and aid them in their journey. Teenagers are living in a very complex and difficult world but there is hope for them. In Psalm 23:4 David speaks of his relationship with God saying, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me.” David talks in such a way that even though life can be hard and difficult, God offers hope and help that applies for us today. Christ offers hope in all circumstances. Youth are a great asset to our community and they need direction. Teenagers are looking to us as adults for wisdom and guidance; they need adults in their lives who are willing to listen and whom they can trust. My hope for this town is that we are able to support our youth and help them during this time in their lives. I seek to get to know the youth better in this community and help them on a spiritual level as well. Teenagers want to believe and hope in something and my prayer is that they would turn to Christ as their hope and rock for the tough times now and whatever comes next. – Benjamin Jepsen is associate/ youth pastor at the Gospel Chapel in Grand Forks

In Loving Memory of

Garvin Walter Cox who passed away Noember 22, 1996 It’s been 16 years since you were taken so suddenly from us, But memories of you will never die. We miss you more than anyone knows. As each day passes, the emptiness grows. The tears we shed, we can wipe away, But the ache in our hearts will always stay. No one knows the grief we bear, When the family meets and you’re not there. You left us suddenly, your thoughts unknown, But you’ve left us memories we will always own. We all wanted you to stay, But we’re sure the Lord has shown you a better way You are merely out of our sight.
