Support staff ready to strike at university Talks continued Monday in effort to avoid job action at VIU BY JENN M C GARRIGLE THE NEWS BULLETIN

Cyclist killed in nighttime collision with vehicle A cyclist has died after colliding with a car in central Nanaimo on the weekend. The incident happened shortly after 8 p.m. Friday near 111 Wall St. when a 28-year-old man, riding a bicycle southbound on a steep downhill section of the street, collided with the right side of a northbound Mazda 3 car as it turned left into the driveway of a condominium complex. The cyclist suffered massive head trauma in the collision and died in

hospital over the weekend. Police said it was raining and dark when the crash occurred. The cyclist was wearing dark clothes and had no lights on the bicycle, making it almost impossible for him to be seen, and was also not wearing a helmet. The cyclist had also been consuming alcohol. The cyclist’s name has not been released. Nanaimo RCMP Traffic Services, a collision analyst and the B.C. Coroners Service are continuing the inves-

tigation and it has not been determined if any charges will be pending against the 36-year-old Nanaimo man who was driving the car. “It’s a coroners investigation and we’re working with the coroner right now,” O’Brien said. Police are reminding all cyclists to use lights and reflectors and wear helmets and for all cyclists and pedestrians to wear bright clothing, especially when winter weather conditions limit visibility.

Strike action could shut down Vancouver Island University today (Nov. 20). By press time Monday, the university’s nearly 300 support staff were on track to join workers at several other institutions in an all-campus walkout Tuesday and Wednesday, but labour action could be called off if the provincial government is willing to enter talks with the union, said Deborah Hopper, president of CUPE Local 1858. “We’re asking for the government to talk to us,” she said. “The work with the mediator went well … but the government is required to sign off on the proposal. The real sticking point is that the government will not respond.” Hopper said the union did not hear from the province over the weekend as anticipated, but she was still hoping for some progress by the end of the day yesterday. “The university is keeping very up-to-date information for students on their website,” she said. If the walkout takes place, support workers will be back to work Thursday and will reassess the situation at that time, Hopper said. The other unions representing VIU workers have informed CUPE that they will honour picket lines, she added. Fred Jacklin, VIU’s registrar and director of enrolment services, confirmed that classes will be cancelled today and possibly tomorrow if picket lines are up. “It’s starting to look more possible,” he said, adding that the strike, if it happens, would affect all campus locations. ◆ See ‘UNIVERSITY’ /3

University actively working with union ◆ From /1 Secondary sites like the Deep Bay Marine Field Station and Milner Gardens would not be affected. Jacklin said public sector negotiations are complicated, involve many par ties and the university is still actively and earnestly working with CUPE to achieve a new collective agreement. He expected an update on the situation to be available Monday afternoon after press time. The university’s support workers, which include food services, clerical and maintenance staff, have been without a contract for more than two years and on Oct. 30, support staff voted 86 per cent in favour of job action. If the strike happens today, it will be the second time in recent years that classes are disrupted – a monthlong faculty association strike shut down the university in the spring of 2011. Hopper said CUPE workers are concerned about the impact job action will have on students, but members feel the province has backed them into a corner. The other institutions that could set up picket lines today are Camosun College, North Island College, College of the Rockies and College of New Caledonia. Campaign starts early to get students voting BY JENN M C GARRIGLE THE NEWS BULLETIN

CHRIS BUSH/THE NEWS BULLETIN

Light duty Martina Turok, a worker with the city’s horticultural department, wraps tree trunks with Christmas lights at Maffeo Sutton Park Thursday. Trees decorating downtown streets and parks are being spruced up in preparation for the holiday season.

The provincial election is six months away, but the Vancouver Island University Students’ Union kicked off a youth voting campaign Wednesday. Youth voter turnout during provincial elections is traditionally lower than other age demographics, which is why the union is participating in Rock the Vote B.C., a provincewide initiative of the B.C. chapter of the Canadian Federation of Students. “The goal is to get students and young people to the ballot box,” said Patrick Barbosa, students’ union organizer. “It’s never too early to start talking about voting and the issues.” He said issues important to young people are lower priorities for government because politicians focus platforms on issues that will get them re-elected and since young people aren’t voting in substantial numbers, the attention is on those who do vote. The declining funding for post-secondary education is one example of how youth are not a priority for politicians, said Barbosa. “If you look at the patterns around funding for post-secondary education … we believe that getting young people to the voting stations will put a lot of pres-

sure on politicians to reverse that strategy,” he said. The union plans to set up tables in different locations on campus to register people to vote. “We have voter registration forms, we’re setting up tables,” said Barbosa. “Our goal is to register a substantial number of students. There’s something to be said about receiving your voter’s card, knowing where your polling station is. If we get an additional 1,000 students voting, we would call that a victory for sure. We’re going to work for more than that.” The union plans to organize a big rock concert event in the spring to bring further awareness to the issue. Green bin program helps reduce household waste by half BY NIOMI PEARSON THE NEWS BULLETIN

Nanaimo residents are kicking excessive garbage to the curb, by diverting nearly half of their household waste from the landfill through the green bin program. During a recent survey completed by the City of Nanaimo, city collection crews tracked the number of garbage bags, use of extra garbage tags and frequency of green bin use for about 24,000 households. The vast majority of households put one bag or fewer of garbage out on collection day (every two

weeks), and 60 per cent regularly used their green bin. As of October, food waste collection was extended to all city-serviced homes, however, multi-family complexes still remain the responsibility of the private hauling companies who service them. “We now divert 64 per cent of household waste through composting or recycling, twice as much as five years ago, but as our recent survey shows, there is room to improve,” said Gary Franssen, manager of sanitation. “We would like to see more households take advantage of the green bin pro-

gram and we will be exploring ways to increase participation.” Sharon Horsburgh, RDN senior zero-waste coordinator, said it is up to each multi-family building, complex or strata to contract with their service provider for green bin collection if the facility lends itself to food waste collection, which can be a challenge. “Each one is very unique – townhouses versus apartment buildings, they have a different service collection system,” she said. “We [can] work with the property owners in the city to advise them on how best to incorporate the green

bin into their service levels.” She added that certain townhomes within the regional district that have been able to emulate residential household collection have been incorporated into the regional service. Canada Post began delivering the fall 2012 Waste Line newsletter to all Nanaimo homes. The newsletter contains more information on how the city’s curbside programs are helping make it more sustainable, and about improvements at the Nanaimo Recycling Exchange. Ship’s wheel dedicated at Departure Bay walk BY NIOMI PEARSON THE NEWS BULLETIN

A beautification project initiated and paid for by the Departure Bay Neighbourhood Association tur ned into a wheel of a deal for local residents and visitors to Departure Bay Beach. On Oct. 25, a re-finished steering wheel belonging to the working sailing ship Alumna was unveiled along the beach walkway, complete with an infor mation plaque and dedicated to Canadian mariners. Since that time, the new fixture has attracted plenty of attention. “I am actually surprised at what a destination marker it has become,” said Karen Hovestad, association president. “I live very close to it and every time I go by there are people standing there looking at it.” Hovestad said the project took about two years from start to finish. Members of the DBNA were participating in banner paint-

ing at the Nanaimo Museum when the wheel was spotted in the basement by executive member Joan Shillabeer, who suggested it be utilized for a public art/beautification project. “We’re always looking for ways of doing something inspirational at Departure Bay,” Hovestad explained. The wheel was originally donated to the museum by the late Capt. Martin Higgs, a local tugboat captain known for his collection of maritime artifacts. It was donated on the condition that Canadian mariners be honoured at its site of display. The ship wheel had been saved from the Alumna, which was built in 1901. “Its remains are now laying in Mud Bay, which is very close to Denman Island,” Hovestad said. The wheel was sent to Port Alberni for sandblasting and refinishing, and then installed, with the plaque, by Nanaimo’s

Parks and Recreation department. All in all, the project cost just under $5,000, and was paid for by members of the association, and a contribution from the Nanaimo Heritage Commission. “It’s a little piece of history that has now been rejuvenated and it’s wonderful to see how excited people are to have a look at it and how it ties what we see and do in the bay and its history,” Hovestad said. “Departure Bay was a major shipping port at the turn of the century, and the spot that we chose to mount it, if you stand in front of the ship’s wheel at certain points between low and high tide, you’ll see pilings from where the ships used to come in.” Hovestad said the wheel is one of a number of projects the association wants to see take place. “Our hope is that the sidewalk will be leveled and make the walk a more comfortable and pleasurable activity,” she said. reporter3@nanaimobulletin.com

Learning bond eases post-secondary cost School trustees want to get the word out to Nanaimo families about a federal grant program that helps families save early for their child’s post-secondary education. The Canada Learning Bond is available to children who meet specific criteria outlined by the Canada Education Savings Program – children born in 2004 or later are eligible if their families receive

the National Child Benefit Supplement. Each child can receive up to $2,000 toward a post-secondary education program. The federal government makes a one-time, $500 payment into the Registered Education Savings Plan of children who qualify and then a $100 deposit each subsequent year the child’s primary caregiver receives the

National Child Benefit Supplement, which is paid monthly to lowincome families with children under the age of 18. Caregivers do not have to put any of their own money into an RESP to get the grant.

Jamie Brennan, school board chairman, said trustees want information on the bond to be included in newsletters to parents. More information on the bond can be found at canlearn.ca.

REPRESENTATIVE FOR Children and Youth looked into 89 cases in child protection system.

BY TOM FLETCHER BLACK PRESS

B.C.’s child protection system has lost most of its ability to deal with severely abused, de pressed and suicidal teens in provincial care, their independent advocate says. A review of 89 cases by Representative for Children and Youth

Mary Ellen TurpelLafond finds common circumstances of severe problems, notably mental illness, domestic violence, sexual and physical abuse, alcohol and drug abuse by young people or their parents, and running away to live on the streets. workers, in some cases from infancy. Three quarters of them were removed from their homes because their parents’ behaviour was a threat to them. The study revealed that they were shuffled to different group or foster homes an average of a dozen times, with some moving as much as 30 times in three years. Fifteen of the children in the study killed themselves, and the other 74 severely injured themselves d u r i n g t h e s t u dy period, 2007-2010. More than half were aboriginal. The review found that the youths, aged 12 to 19, were not assessed or treated for trauma, and caregivers are not trained to deal with mental illness or the effects of abuse. Turpel-Lafond said in an interview that while she admires the willingness of “mom and pop foster parents to take in abused and mentally ill children, the tur nover shows they can’t do the job without specialized training and a constant presence to help stabilize the teens’ home and school life. “This is a pretty horrific foster care sys-

tem for kids with mental health needs, and that’s something that we have to face, Turpel-Lafond said. “The gover nment has to face down the fact that they’ve mostly gutted therapeutic foster care over the last decade. Other risk factors identified in the study are learning disabilities and lack of attachment to school, and in a third of cases a “significant romantic conflict within 24 hours before killing or injuring themselves. Children and Family Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux said the ministry accepts all the recommendations in the report, and is preparing a two-year action plan for mental health services that includes improved training of both social workers and foster parents. After consultations, including aboriginal communities and agencies, the plan is to be made public by February, Cadieux said. editor@nanaimobulletin.com

Patten’s volunteer work earns commendation One of three Nanaimo men who serve as aide-de-camps to province’s lieutenant-governors during their terms BY NIOMI PEARSON THE NEWS BULLETIN

T

hey don’t use horses anymore, but a first glimpse of aide-de-camp Jack Patten in his crisp, freshly pressed uniform tells you that he is just the man for the job. His jacket is a living history book, with its row of medals, gorget patches, and aiguillette (an ornamental braided cord), which Patten says was used by aide-de-camps of yesteryear to tether horses. “In the old days, the generals and kings would have an aide in the field when they went into battle, and he always had a spare horse,” he said. “So if the battle was going awry, the king or general would turn to his aide and say ‘we’d better get out of here’, so he’d get on a fresh horse and away they’d go.” Over the last 23 years as aide-de-camp, Patten has served five different lieutenant-governors. In recognition of his years and quality of service, Patten was recently awarded a commendation from outgoing Lt.-Gov. Stephen Point. It was presented Nov. 1 in Victoria. “It came right out of the blue and it’s a great honour,” Patten said. In B.C., aide-de-camps are in service to the Queen, who is represented by the lieutenant- governor. Much of the volunteer, unpaid role requires them to ensure

protocol is followed, traveling to official occasions and engagements to make sure the governor’s appearance runs smoothly. “We’re just a little cog in the wheel, but we try to make them look good,” Patten said. “Whatever happens, the lieutenantgovernor always follows the aide, the aide is in front and always knows what’s going on, if he’s good.”

Sometimes I stand there and I look around and think, ‘oh Mum, if you could only see me now, your scruffy little boy.’

Some of the duties an aide-de-camp might take on during an event include setting up the microphone and stage for a speech, while making sure the lieutenant governor enters and exits the on time. she is unable to attend. Born in South Hampton, England, in 1937, Patten joined St. John Ambulance at the age of seven. He came to Canada in 1956, and after returning to England to marry his high school sweetheart, settled in Nanaimo and started up Bastion Trophies. He is now retired but remains a member of the Canadian Scottish Regiment, and serves as provincial administrative officer for St. John Ambulance. During his 23 years as aide-de-camp, he has had many memorable moments, such as having lunch with the Queen in the Palace of Whitehall, and dancing with Princess Alexandria. Patten, a First World War historian, has even taken a couple of former lieutenant-governors on battlefield tours of Europe. “Sometimes I stand there and I look around and think, ‘oh Mum, if you could only see me now, your scruffy little boy,” he said. There are approximately 25 aide-de-camps in B.C., said Patten, and three are from Nanaimo. Nanaimo RCMP Officer In Charge Norm McPhail was appointed to the position earlier this year, and former Nanaimo RCMP OIC Jeff Lott, who retired in 2011, has been an aidede-camp since 1999. He recalls that he had just been transferred to Victoria with the RCMP at the time.

Nanaimo resident Jack Patten, an aide-de-camp for the B.C. lieutenant-governor, was awarded a commendation from outgoing Lt.-Gov. Stephen Point.

“I’d never been involved in anything at that level at the time and I thought it would be an interesting opportunity for me and a good opportunity to represent the force as an aide-de-camp,” Lott said. He said some of his more memorable moments have included traveling through the

province delivering books to First Nations communities alongside Point, and a First Nations cadet ceremony in Duncan, where, as a surprise, Point announced he had designated the cadets as his own official cadet group. “That was very exciting, the entire group was

First Nations youth, and he saw that this would be something that would have a profound effect on them, to be taken under the wing of the office of the lieutenant-governor,” said Lott. To learn more, please visit http://www.ltgov. bc.ca. reporter3@nanaimobulletin.com

Season calls for road safety We might be quickly closing in on the most wonderful time of the year, but with our dark and wet roads, it is also one of the most dangerous. This combination has already claimed the life of one Nanaimo resident this fall – a 28-year-old male cyclist died after a collision with a car on Wall Street Friday. As the Christmas season approaches, we find ourselves hustling in all directions. Normal work and family obligations become more complicated with the need to shop for presents and attend social events. Everything speeds up. Unfortunately, it is at a time when our roadways become the most dangerous. In dark and wet conditions, it is virtually impossible to see that pedestrian crossing the street in a marked crosswalk, or that cyclist moving toward you as you try to make a left-hand turn, or that deer running out from the ravine. But steps can be taken to not only be safer on the roads, but to also reduce the stress level of people on the move. Driving the speed limit is a good start. At 50 km/h, drivers can often react in time to a avoid an unexpected cyclist, pedestrian or animal. Making sure your tires are up to the job of winter driving also helps. Cyclists can reduce their risk by ensuring they are visible, and are in a position where drivers can see them by riding in a predictable manner. Even pedestrians can reduce accidents by crossing the street only when it is certain that drivers in both directions are aware of their intentions. Making smart decisions, like planning effectively and not drinking and driving, can also reduce risk and stress. The Christmas season is a busy one in Nanaimo, but with a little care and attention to how we move around, we can ensure that everybody makes it home safely to enjoy the festivities. As horrific as this thinning of the herd may be, it also offers an opportunity for the horse racing industry to be stripped down to its bones and be rebuilt. It can start with quality over quantity. Improve breeding practices, improve the culture and create an honest, responsible industry. I stand by my previous claim that the best five words in sports is “down the stretch they come!” When done correctly, horse racing is a beautiful thing, an event that inspires and awes. It has been difficult to watch the slow death of horse racing over the years, but the veins that supply the sport with its lifeblood have become filled with toxins. I hope this sad waste of life awakens a new order, and that in the future the lives of horses will be regarded higher than the profits they are bred to provide.

Park deserves enhancement To the Editor, Re: City plans to remove two century-old dams, Nov. 1. As I understand it, city council received an engineer’s report in 2010 saying that if the dams at Colliery Dam Park fail, about a dozen people on the flood plain would die. Since then, developers have built numerous high-density housing units on that same flood plain – which was also farmland. In 2012, council received another engineer’s report saying several hundred people would die if the dams fail. All of a sudden council is so worried that survivors will sue the city, that it has decided to tear down the dams and return Colliery Dam Park to its “natural state” of 100 years ago. Is the dam at Morrell Lake next to go? In recent years, council allowed developers to build on the south side of Colliery Dam Park, and because there wasn’t enough water to service the area, installed a pipe criss-crossing the park from Nanaimo Lakes Road to Harewood Mines Road at taxpayers’ expense.

NEWS BULLETIN FILE

Since taxpayers picked up the tab for supplying water to new housing developments beside the park, let developers pay for reinforcing the dams, ensuring safety for people living in their developments on the flood plain. Council should immediately stop further development on the flood plain, and make land owners either farm the remaining land or lease it to someone who will.

Colliery Dam Park is an innercity nature refuge. It provides swimming and fishing holes, cycling and walking trails and freshly oxygenated air – despite the Nanaimo Parkway cutting through it – for anyone wanting a nature break or simply too poor to afford vacations away. Enhance it, don’t destroy it. Christel Martin Nanaimo

Readers respond: Feedback on news items Council epitomizes new word definition To the Editor, Re: City plans to remove two century-old dams, Nov. 1. I recently learned a new word, literally new, that has just been added to the Oxford Dictionary; ‘Omnishambles’ defined as, “a situation that has been comprehensively mismanaged, characterized by a string of blunders and miscalculations.” While originally coined to describe ongoing public relation blunders, gaffes and perceived mismanagement of the British government, it immediately struck me the word could easily apply to mayor, council and those city staff with the power to inform in Nanaimo. A perfect and current example of an omnishambles would be the issue of removing Colliery dams. A decision once again made behind closed doors with no public

input and raising the ire of citizens. When will they learn? Now that Nanaimo actually has a working communication manager – met him, like him – I have to wonder if or how much input he had into council’s decision to forgo public participation? Communication and transparency have been catch phrases for this council, and yet, they have had by far more in camera meetings and made more decisions in private, with no consultation to or from the public, than any other council I can remember. There is another definition, by Albert Einstein, that would also apply equally as well as omnishambles; insanity – doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. When will they learn and how much will it cost us before they do so? Gordon W. Fuller Nanaimo

To the Editor, Thank you for the Remembrance Day supplement in the Nov. 6 issue of the News Bulletin. As a footnote for local interest, Orville Fisher, the painter of D-Day – The Assault featured on the cover page, collaboratively painted the Malaspina Hotel murals in Nanaimo along with Paul Goranson and E. J. Hughes. The trio signed their works as The Westcoast Brotherhood. All three painters later individually served as official Canadian wartime artists; depictions by Goranson and Hughes are also part of the Beaverbrook Collection of War Art displayed at the Canadian War Museum. Darrell Ohs Nanaimo

The Island Corridor Foundation, the non-profit that owns the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway, recently started asking regional districts up and down Vancouver Island for $3.2 million to repair bridges along the route. Island taxpayers need to be concerned. A Capital Regional District report stated the $3.2 million won’t cover the upgrades needed for commuter and freight rail services. Worse yet, the ICF has not obtained any commitment from VIA Rail to resume basic passenger service. Regional districts should think twice about handing over funds without asking hard questions about how the ICF will spend the money and how it is governed. First, the ICF’s claim that it will cost only $3.2 million to get all 48 bridges and trestles up to basic operational level strains credibility. A February 2012 report conducted for the Ministry of Transportation said it would cost at least $8.7 million to get the bridges operational and operating for 10 years. Has the ICF got any estimates from contractors? Where is its business plan for this work? It seems the ICF has decided that only its board members and employees need to know what its plan is for this money. The public is supposed to provide cash, and not ask any questions even though serious questions need asking. VIA Rail provided the railway with an annual subsidy of $1.2 million when it ran the passenger service. The ICF also receives $340,000 annually from Telus for telecommunications lines that run along its right-of-way. What happened to all those funds? Why has the ICF performed practically no maintenance to the railway?

I have been a member of the ICF’s rail operations committee for several years after it acquired the E&N from Canadian Pacific in 2006. In 2010, our committee began questioning the poor condition and overall safety of the railway, but were told this was none of our concern. In January 2011, the committee was told it was no longer needed and two months later, VIA stopped passenger service due to the poor condition of the track. What concerns me is that safety violations had to be brought to VIA’s attention before anything was done to stop the train from operating. Now, ICF admits that it needs millions to bring that track up to basic operational safety – effectively admitting that the track was unsafe when passenger service stopped. In its pitch to regional districts, the ICF has given the impression that the bridge repairs were unexpected. But the problems have been known for some time: in October 2010, a different consultant submitted a report about the state of the E&N’s bridges. That report, however, has remained a secret. What don’t they want the public to see? Regional districts need to see the October 2010 report and ask why the ICF is claiming that the bridges only need $3.2 million for the next decade. I want to see railway service return. However, I believe the regional districts should refuse the funding request until the ICF has a new executive, a transparent board, and a realistic plan. ◆ Jim Sturgill is a railway consultant, a former E&N locomotive engineer and a member of the E&N Railway Action Group.

Lorraine Markin, left, and Sarah Smith, right, of the Zonta Club of Nanaimo, present Shannon Farahbakhsh of Nanaimo Hospice with a cheque for $1,000. The money goes toward the Expanding the Heart of Hospice fundraising campaign for a new home for Hospice.

North Oyster and Area Historical Society hosts its annual children’s Christmas event Saturday (Nov. 24). Bring the kids and arrive hungry for this year’s Christmas Pancake Breakfast with Santa. There will be fun, hands-on activities for the whole family including face and nail painting, temporary tattoos, cookie decorating, the Wheel of Surprise, a creative crafts table plus door prizes for children under 12, a Christmas raffle and entertainment by the Shriners Mount Arrowsmith Clown Unit, Island Farms’ Farmer Vickie and Daisy the Cow and Jumping Jiminy. There will also be photos with Santa by News Bulletin photographer Chris Bush after Santa is chauffeured to the event by the North Oyster Volunteer Fire Department. The breakfast happens at Cedar Community Hall 9 a.m. to noon. Admission: $5 adults, $2 children. Families are also asked to bring nonperishable food items for Christmas hampers and items for babies, to be donated to local charities. For more information, please call Irene at 250-245-2559 or Sue at 250-245-3358.

Musician shares gift BY RACHEL STERN

Nanaimo’s Jayden Holman as a guest performer (see related story below). “We have all the bells and whistles. Or sometimes it’s just me and my guitar and I take requests or sit at the edge of the stage, said McCoy. “It’s kind of like having 1,000 of your closest friends in your living room. During the show he’ll perform traditional Christmas songs such as Jingle Bells and Walking in a Winter Wonderland mixed with some of his own songs. McCoy’s career in the music industry has spanned 25 years. The country musician was nominated for a Juno award in the Country Recording of the Year for his first solo album, Everything. He has also won the Canadian Country Music Association’s Male of the Year and Songwriter of the Year. He founded The Road Hammers, the highest selling country band in Canadian country music history. Jason McCoy performs Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $40/$35 members and groups/$15 students and available at www.porttheatre.com, the Port Theatre box office, located at 125 Front St., or by calling 250-7548550.

THE NEWS BULLETIN

The greatest gift is love. It’s a philosophy that shaped Canadian country artist Jason McCoy’s song The Greatest Gift. It also inspired his The Perfect Gift tour. “First of all I wanted to think about what the greatest thing in the world is. It’s not a hotrod car or a mansion. It’s not the thing I see. It’s the people surrounding it ‌ which is the essence of Christmas,â€? said McCoy. “What’s exciting is when the doorbell rings and grandpa is there and every one runs there for a hug.â€? McCoy is performing in Nanaimo at the Port Theatre Thursday (Nov. 22). His Christmas concert blends sophisticated technology and his acoustic playing to create an intimate evening with the artist. McCoy said during the performance his home videos will be shown on big screens, which will also be used to display greetings from special guests who will interact with the audience. It will also show clips from his upcoming Country Music Television special Christmas at the Grand, which is expected to air in early December. It will also include

Their work is on display at the downtown Nanaimo Art Gallery until Dec. 8. Day uses layers of colour and texture, using both the ancient technique of encaustic painting and contemporary practices to create her pieces. She has painted professionally for more than 25 years. Carroll is inspired by abstract expressionism. She uses stamps and washes transparent colours over surfaces to express what she calls “a slice of time. For more information please go to www. nanaimoartgallery.com.

YYoung Nanaimo musician performs with award-winning country artist Jason McCoy BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN

It’s not often fans get to perform in a concert with a musician they love. For young Nanaimo musician Jayden Holman

he’s getting that opportunity Thursday (Nov. 22) when he performs as a guest artist during Jason McCoy’s The Perfect Gift Tour at the Port Theatre. “It’s pretty exciting, said Holman, about the perfor-

mance, adding he will have the opportunity to speak with McCoy before, during and after the concert. During his guest appearance Holman will perform some new original songs. Holman is attracted to

many musical genres, but lately his work has taken on a country-pop vibe. “With writing it just kind of happens to me. I’ll sit down and the words just kind of flow, he said. Holman recently won

ONE DAY S

the youth category in the PNE’s Star Showdown contest in August with his rendition of Van Morrison’s Into the Mystic. That win garnered him the opportunity to perform during the Canadian Association

of Fairs and Exhibitions National Conference in Winnipeg. The musician is currently working on songs for a debut album, which doesn’t have a release date yet.

Band unveils family treasure BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN

Braeden Marshal is celebrating the release of its debut album with a benefit concert Saturday night. The album, Treasures, was created from songs the band perfected over the last two years. Initially the band created the event solely as an album launch, but decided to also make it a benefit concert. Joel Wiggers, lead singer and guitarist for the band, said his father has colon cancer that has spread to his lungs and liver. “It’s spreading pretty aggressively,” said Wiggers. “My parents are not financially well off. We’re just going to honour my dad that night.” Braeden Marshal is a family affair, made up of Wiggers and his two sons Marshall, 19, and Brayden, 17. The band formed in 2009 and plays rock, “reminiscent of Soul Asylum,” says the band. Some of Wiggers’s

favourite songs from t h e d e bu t a l bu m include Breaking, which explores the subject of relationships, and a cover of Oasis’ Wonderwall. “I like the way the song came across,” said Wiggers about the cover of Wonder-

wall. “It’s so true to the original but also so Braeden Marshal.” Wiggers said the concert is also a way for the band to thank its fans. The launch party is Saturday (Nov. 24) at the Vancouver Island University theatre.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door, which includes a copy of the album, and are available at w w w. b r a e d e n m a r shal.com.

Film explores mystery of severed feet For five years, severed feet continued to wash up on the shores of Western Canada and Washington State. Between 2007 and 2011, twelve feet in running shoes were discovered, yet no other body parts were found by police. The film, Severed Footage, explores the mystery. It follows university students who are filming a history project on Kanaka Pete, an axe murderer who was hung for killing his family in Nanaimo. He was buried in an unmarked grave and the site is rumoured to be a hotspot for paranormal activity. The film won best Sci-Fi/Horror Film at the Mississippi International Film Festival in October and the Award of Merit from the Lucerne International Film Festival in Switzerland. The film makes its Canadian premiere in Nanaimo Thursday (Nov. 22) 7

p.m. at Avalon Theatre in Woodgrove Centre. Tickets are $10 by calling 250-751-3657 or at the theatre.

Barsby wins grudge match to move on

GREG SAKAKI/THE NEWS BULLETIN

Nanaimo Clippers forward Jesse Neher, right, skates away from Langley Rivermen opponent Ben Greiner during the second period off Friday night’s B.C. Hockey League game at Frank Crane Arena. The Clippers skated to a 6-1 win.

Clippers just miss chance at first place

I

BCHL TEAM beats Langley, loses to Vic.

BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

The Nanaimo Clippers showed a lot of firepower on the weekend, but not enough to win a first-place showdown. The city’s B.C. Hockey League club won one of its two games at Frank Crane Arena, blowing out the Langley Rivermen 6-1 on Friday before dropping the next night’s game against the Victoria Grizzlies, 5-4.

In the first game of the weekend the Clips totally dominated the Rivermen, outshooting the visitors 51-28 and tallying three powerplay goals. “A lot of the close games would have been broken open if we’d scored on the power play and that’s what we’ve started to do the last couple games and it’s made a big difference, said Mike Vandekamp, Clippers coach, after the win. Trevor Fitzgerald, Chris Rygus, Gre g Fraser, Kevin Miller, Kyle Kramer and Josh Bryan scored the goals that night and Jarrod Schamerhorn earned

the win in the crease. Vandekamp said he liked the way his team continued to play hard in that one even when it had a healthy lead. “We have habits that we’re trying to form with the team, we have some goals we’ve set for ourselves every game and we really were focused on that, said the coach. The Clippers had gone into Friday’s game coming off a 4-2 midweek loss to the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. “Really it was just trying to get back to the basics, get back to our game plan and play the game that we know how to play, said Fraser,

“

We have habits that we’re trying to form with the team.

who was chosen first star. The win gave the Shipmen an opportunity to try for the Island Division lead on Saturday against the Grizz, but Vic built up a two-goal lead heading into the third period of that game and held on.

Michael McNicholas scored twice for N a n a i m o, B re n d e n Forbes and Kramer had the other markers and Jayson Argue and Schamerhorn split time in the crease. Former Clippers forwards Gerry Fitzgerald and Leo Fitzgerald had three points each to lead the Grizzlies. Shots were 31-25 in favour of Nanaimo. GAME ON ‌ The Clippers visit the Powell River Kings for backto-back games Friday (Nov. 23) and Saturday. Next home action for the Clippers is Dec. 1 when the Kings come to Frank Crane Arena. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

The Barsby Bulldogs were the better team and the more sportsmanlike team, and they’re the ones moving on. John Barsby Community Secondary School’s AA varsity football team won its quarter-final playoff game 58-9 over the Pitt Meadows Marauders on Saturday at the University of British Columbia. “We played really disciplined. We showed up for a football game; the other team thought they were in a UFC fight,â€? said Rob Stevenson, Barsby coach. “Seriously, I was pretty appalled at what took place.â€? There were incidents, he alleged, of head-butting, kneeing, eye-gouging and ankle-twisting, but the Bulldogs kept their cool. “You go hard because you’re protecting yourself,â€? Stevenson said. “The best defence is aggressive play within the rules.â€? Barsby’s D played its best game of the season, said the coach, giving up perhaps 65 yards of total offence on the afternoon. Those defensive stops, plus a “dialled-inâ€? effort on special teams, gave the offence good field position. “It was chainsaw offence; it was relentless,â€? said Stevenson. “We wound up punting only twice and we found the endzone plenty.â€? Dexter Shea scored four rushing TDs and Kalven Kellock had a pair of touchdown receptions from quarterback Brody Taylor. Duc Truong and Jacob Odynsky scored run TDs for the ’Dawgs. Stevenson said he’s very proud of his guys, who not only won the football game, but became a stronger team. “A real unifier,â€? said the coach. GAME ON ‌ The Bulldogs play the South Delta Sun Devils in the semifinals Saturday (Nov. 24) at UBC’s Thunderbird Stadium in a 3 p.m. kickoff. Look for more on the game in an upcoming issue. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Bucs extend win streak

The Nanaimo Buccaneers didn’t give the opposition any chance at a comeback. The city’s Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League team defeated the Oceanside Generals 4-1 on Thursday night at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. Up 3-1 going into the third period, the Bucs weren’t content to sit on the lead – they continued to keep most of the action in the Generals’ end of the ice. Jordan Levesque scored a hat trick and Daniel Foglietta had the Buccaneers’ other goal. Cameron Large made 26 saves for the win as his team outshot the visitors 39-27. The Bucs won the next night, too, doubling up the Campbell River Storm by a 6-3 score up Island. Will McNamara scored a

Singing Christmas Tree a 20-year tradition Thousands of volunteer hours required to host the annual free production, spread holiday cheer

F

TI FI M RS EE T VE R!

or 20 years, ET Family Church’s Singing Christmas Tree has been providing central Island residents with a holiday tradition. This year’s production is entitled Special Delivery. It’s the story of cousins Mary and Elizabeth and the peculiar circumstances regarding their pregnancies. With Elizabeth’s husband unable to talk, Mary’s fiancée threatening to leave and a mysterious angel added into the mix, the question remains, is this really God’s plan? Performance dates are Dec. 7-9 and Dec. 14-16. Nightly performances are at 7 p.m. for all dates as well as 4 p.m. matinee performances Saturdays and Sundays. At nearly eight metres tall, the Singing Christmas tree requires 3,500 lights using 42,000 watts and needs 12 technicians to put on the production. Add the choir members and more than 40,000 pieces of tinsel, the tree tops out at 4,000 kilograms. It takes 120 volunteers 18,000 man hours of planning and rehearsing the program – as well as constructing the tree to put on the show. Tickets are free and available at ET Family Church, 1300 Princess Royal Ave. and Tia Mei’s Cafe, 741 Third St., in the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre. Tickets guarantee a seat at the show and doors open 15 minutes prior to the performance. For more information, please visit www.etfamilychurch.com e-mail info@nanaimoet.com or call 250-753-0258.

Information and contest rules are available at guest services near the food court and centre court near the clock. As for other holiday magic, Santa Claus has arrived and is greeting children at his sleigh at centre court. Santa’s hours are Monday-Tuesday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday-Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; in November. T h e h o l i d ay s j u s t wouldn’t be the same without the sounds of Christmas. Woodgrove is hosting Vancouver Island’s choirs, choral and musical groups in the food court from Dec. 1-16. It’s a wonderful opportunity for schools and community groups, small and large, to perform in a unique setting. For a schedule of performances, please visit guest services or go to woodgrovecentre. com. And once again, Woodgrove is hosting a charity gift wrap from Dec. 1-24 in support of the Nanaimo Child Development Centre’s Little Drummer Fund. Hospice invites individuals and families who have recently lost a loved one to a Gathering To Remember Dec. 2 at St. Paul’s Anglican Church at 2:30 p.m. Enjoy music, readings, candle light remembrance with visual and silent reflection followed by tea and light refreshments. The event is also the kickoff to Hospice’s
