Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without a presentation of Charles Dickens’ classic tale A Christmas Carol. Fortunately, in Castlegar five accomplished speakers will take turns reading the iconic story of Ebenezer Scrooge and his nocturnal visits from three spirits. Performing the five staves (parts) will be Glenn Hicks, Jane Sinclair, Chelan Padmoroff, Bob Jackson, and CBC Radio morning host Chris Walker. The reading is a fundraiser for the Castlegar and District Public Library and goes Friday, Dec. 7 at the Castlegar United Church. “We want to create a festive feeling around the Christmas holiday season,” said Darlene Kalawsky, chair of the Friends of the Castlegar and District Public Library. “We’ve got some great guests coming in to read. We’ve also got Glenn Hicks from Mountain FM and his wife Jane (Sin-

r o f h c t Wa pcoming our u

clair). They’re very renowned for this kind of thing. Jane is a theatre producer/actress from Nelson. Chelan is our (Rotary) Rotaract chairperson and she’s a student at Selkirk College.” The featured speaker is Chris Walker, who is the host of CBC Radio’s Daybreak South program. Walker, who grew up on Galiano Island near Victoria, is an award winning reporter who started his career in the alleyways of Egypt after landing his first job with the Cairo Times, an independent human rights magazine. He has also freelanced for CBC News and written for the Lebanon Daily Star. Glenn Hicks, of course, is the news director at Mountain FM and has been for the past eight years. Hicks is used to asking the questions in interviews, but I turned the tables on him and asked what he thought of reading A Christmas Carol. “It’s a good opportunity,” he said. “It’s all about raising

funds. People just like to hear a nice, familiar piece of quality writing. Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and Ebenezer Scrooge is, obviously, very famous.” Hicks has given several performances for various public events and is looking forward to the reading. “It’s great to be with other people and give a little colour to what is a brilliantly written piece anyway,” he said. “When you read it out loud - the diction, the descriptions, and the Dickensian qualities are absolutely fantastic. You get your teeth sunk into it and widen your eyes and try to look at the audience as you do it - it’s great. The audiences are always very receptive and get into the whole spirit of it. It’s fantastic.” Hicks’ wife, Jane Sinclair, may be more well known to Nelson audiences, but there is no overlooking her experience in the theatre both as a director and as a performer. Continued on P. A19

CBC Radio personality Chris Walker will be part of a cast including locals Glenn Hicks, Jane Sinclair, Bob Jackson, Chelan Padmoroff, and Christina Amelio. The reading of the Charles Dickens classic “A Christmas Carol” will take place Friday, December 7 at 7 p.m. at Castlegar United Church.

Council briefs The Baja Men sang Who Let the Dogs Out?, but soon Castlegar residents will have to pay a little more to let their dogs out. Council heard and passed three readings of a motion that would raise the fees for dog licenses in Castlegar. This will be the first time the fees have been raised in 18 years, or as councillor Sue Heaton-Sherstobitoff said, “it’s less than three dog years.” Councillor Russ Hearne of the Finance and Corporate Services Committee said the fees now fall in line with the surrounding municipalities. “We’ve re-adjusted our animal licensing rates for dogs,” he said. “There’s lots of value in having your

Basically, it hasn’t been reviewed since 1994, so we did some housekeeping and raised the fees to put them more in line with our neighbouring communities and keep up with costs.” The rate for neu-

tered male dogs will go from $15 to $20; the rate for un-neutered male dogs will go from $35 to $55; spayed female dogs will go from $15 to $20; and unsprayed female dogs will go from $45 to $55. Hearne expects the final reading and adoption will take place at the Dec. 3 council meeting. Doukhobor Society Dan Sammartino, president of the Kootenay Doukhobor Historical Society, and Netta Zeberoff, curator of the museum, gave a report to Castlegar City Council on Monday. Sammartino said the Doukhobor museum had a total of 2,800 visitors last year. He also talked about ways to improve the museum which includes adding a component where people can come and take pictures wearing traditional Doukhobor clothing. Heritage Society Chris D’Arcy of the Castlegar and District Heritage Society gave a presentation to council on the 2012 activities. He said business has been slower than normal this year. “As a result, we made a decision in late September not to keep normal hours in the fourth quarter of this year at the Station Museum,” he said. “This is the first time in 10 years that we’ve done this. make sure we had sufficient funds to keep our regular operating obligations through the new year.” D’Arcy also reminded council that since this was an even year, there would be no CP Holiday Train. The train will return next year. He said Zuckerberg Island was staffed from May until mid-August, other than two weeks when the causeway was closed. “Repairs to the causeway have been done and we really appreciate that work being done,” he said. “The bridge is still closed due to weakness. The only two minor items that concern us are getting a regular phone line and bear-proof garbage containers.” He said having the phone line would be advantageous for getting alarms out. Vandalism was a problem with several broken windows in both buildings, although they were all repaired quickly. Youth Engagement

Councillors Deb McIntosh and Sue Heaton-Sherstobitoff reported on meeting with students from Bud Gregory’s Student Leadership class at Stanley Humphries Secondary School as part of a Youth Engagement initiative. “In 2010, we did a Youth Engagement strategy survey with about 600 kids getting interviewed for that,” said HeatonSherstobitoff. “It was quite obvious from that survey reply that there wasn’t much interaction between city hall and our youth. “Youth want to have a voice and that’s a good thing because one day they’re going to be our leaders. So I thought about engaging the leadership class. “It’s a varied group of kids from different ages and from different walks of life from around our community. I thought, what better way than meeting with them and asking, ‘what’s going on in your world?’ ‘Where do you see Castlegar

going in the next 10 years?’” The councillors said the students were very excited to meet them and after a warming up process, were very engaging. “They came up with several neat ideas about what they would like to see here and what some of their concerns were,” said McIntosh. “I don’t think they understood quite the gravity of what we were asking them. “I think it’s a huge step. We encouraged them to go and think about it; talk to their friends, talk to their parents. I think it’s huge for them to have input right to city council. It’s never been done before.” McIntosh said Castlegar City Council has made plans to meet with the students a minimum of twice a year. Some of the comments and concerns the students came up with related to public transit safety, school buses, and having a safe place to go that is youth friendly.

The wide-ranging effort which originated in Nashville Tennessee and more locally in Kelowna, has a push going on which began on Monday, November 19 and will continue right through the month of December. Over 300 million children worldwide are without shoes. Shoes are very often considered a required part of the school uniform in developing countries, and without shoes, many children are unable to attend school. Changing the world one pair at a time, Soles4Souls is staging the Million Shoe Mission. In Canada the goal is to collect a million pairs of shoes in the next few years from every province.

At the Nov. 5 Castlegar city council meeting, Val Field and Audrey Polovnikoff from the Kootenay Gallery gave a presentation which included a slide show.

The two said the gallery had a strong season and benefited from a Community Basin Trust (CBT) community initiatives grant through the city. They also said the gallery could benefit from a change of location into the downtown core. “Happily, we can report that it was a very good year,” said Polovnikoff, the gallery’s vice chair. “We are benefiting from being a part of a community that recognizes that art and culture are important components of a healthy, vibrant

Teams are doing us proud

The following points are more often raised as championship banners are waved, or the city/region is hosting some major tournament. Much was said in favour of organized sports during the BC Seniors Games held in the West Kootenays in 2011, for example – the health and social benefits of staying active and sportingly competitive are hard to dispute. But there’s something else that comes with sports that’s valuable too, and that’s the way the teams compete on behalf of their whole school or town. Two teams doing especially well lately are the Castlegar Rebels and Selkirk College Saints. These hockey squads are giving a boost to anyone who happens to follow them, or just hear about what they’re up to. There are more than enough things going on that a person can worry about, so we take our postive news where we can get it. If a Castlegar outfit is having success against a regional rival, let’s say Nelson or Beaver Valley, or the Saints are successfully flying the local colours against a group in Langley or Kamloops... it’s a civic boost that’s as important as someone wants to make it. So here’s a thumbs up to the teams mentioned above, and all the players in all sports who represent this community. Naturally we should support them in tough times too, that makes the good times all the better. We want to hear from you.

Spots in Time - Gord Turner

On being retired I don’t know about you, but I enjoyed being semi-retired. Traveling, golfing, and doing nothing for half a year, and then working half a year was clearly a good situation. Now that I’ve left the College teaching job I loved and am available for whatever or nothing, things have taken on a different perspective. I certainly am not moaning about the lack of responsibility and the free time I now have. You see, I have so much to do in this new space I’ve opened up for myself. I enjoy reading, so if I want to stay up all night to finish a book, I can do so. I don’t have to worry about being tired for work the next day. I just sleep in until 11 o’clock. I enjoy wine and discovering more about it. That’s why I try various grape types and blends. Now that I’m retired, if I want to share two or three bottles with my friends while socializing or playing Mexican train, then I do so. It’s possible to burn the night because there’s no job to have to get to in the morning. When I was working, I never had time for the little jobs that needed Craig Lindsay Reporter

doing around the house and yard. This year of retirement, my wife and I filled 50 bags with leaves, and we cleared the yard of leaves for the first autumn in 30 years. I didn’t have to get home from work exhausted and try to find the energy to tackle leaves. I find I now have time for minor personal items. For example, I took all morning recently to cut my toenails. Not being in a rush, I didn’t cut part of my toes as used to happen when I rushed before—blood all over my socks. I even kept track of the clippings and disposed of them properly. Coffee in the morning used to be a problem when I had to leave early for work. Those who know me know that I am not a morning person, so making coffee was not something I looked forward to. Now, I simply take my time. We’ve bought a coffee machine, which is automatic for everything but the cleaning of it. So I’ve become adept at washing and drying the seven removable parts of this machine. When I was working, I would never have had time or patience to get the machine “ready.” I would simply Chris Hopkyns Publisher

Cindy Amaral Production Manager

have gone without coffee. During my working days at the College, I really didn’t have time to shave in the morning either. But I always scraped the whiskers off my face, sometimes cutting myself in the rush. Now, I can stay unshaven for days and not worry about it. Not having to go to work, I often lie in bed well into the morning. I prop myself up while drinking a leisurely cup of coffee and think about the day ahead. I have all the time to decide if I want to do nothing or perhaps do an odd chore. My retirement, it seems, has allowed me to refocus. Before, I was always thinking about my job. Everything at home and in my private life came second, and I would not do things (or not do them well) because my focus was elsewhere. Now, when we’re not traveling, I am truly at home, and retirement has allowed me to be there—totally if need be. I now spend more time planning—rather than functioning in a helter-skelter way. Need I say it--I’m enjoying this slower pace. Sandy Leonard Production

Castlegar News Thursday, November 22, 2012

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Frustrated by directive Two months ago the Castlegar Post Office had a “restructure” of all delivery routes, resulting in the elimination of one full time letter carrier route. Despite the fact that the local manager recently advised us that the volumes of mail are higher now than a year ago, we have fewer people to deliver the mail and this is causing some serious problems. Especially during this time of year with shorter days, onset of winter and the approach of high volume Christmas mail. In order to try and get this larger

delivery done during regular hours, we have been told by the employer that we are to take shortcuts wherever we can and to not waste time talking to each other or our customers because that delays our delivery. The clerks and carriers have never considered it to be a waste of our time to talk to our customers. In fact, seeing our regular customers and checking in on elderly members of the community on a regular basis is the most enjoyable part of our job. Until now we have always been told not to take shortcuts but now it seems that the new restructure is unworkable without

them. So, if you see us delivering mail in the dark, please keep your porch lights on to help us avoid injuring ourselves on unseen obstacles. If you see us rushing past and not stopping to talk or answer your questions it is because we could be subject to discipline. If you get mail at 7 p.m., please do not get angry with us because on one hand we are told we have to stay out until the mail is all delivered and on the other we are chastised if it requires us to deliver later in the day because of volumes and the larger routes. The workers at the Castlegar Post Office want you to

know that you are not just numbers or percentage of coverage equations to us; you are our valued customers and we do not agree with the reductions of service we are now forced to provide. We hope you will take a moment to let customer service know your concerns by calling 1-866-607-6301, or call our MP Alex Atamanenko and let him know your thoughts so he can continue his quest to stop erosion of service in rural communities. Thank you for your support. Cindy McCallum Miller, Vice President Castlegar Local CUPW

Getting in on the garbage harvest

submitted

The following is the first of a series of ecology-based submissions by students of Selkirk College’s Recreation, Fish and Wildlife program. Just last year, a number of cities and towns in Japan were devastated by the tsunami. One of the consequences of the disaster was tons of debris in the ocean, floating along on the prevailing currents, eventually washing up on a shore near you. Some debris has already started to show up on Canadian shores and a lot more is still to come that will need to be cleaned up. This debris in the ocean was the result of a natural event. Unfortunately, we tend to use our waterways, lakes, and oceans as dumping grounds on a regular basis. In the same way, this debris eventually ends up on a shoreline somewhere, polluting yet another natural space. One of the initiatives to combat this shoreline pollution is The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. This is a national pro-

gram that was started in 1994 by a group of volunteers from the Vancouver Aquarium who decided to start cleaning up beaches in and around Stanley Park. As they collected litter and debris from the shores, they recorded and submitted what they found to a global program called the International Coastal Cleanup Program. Over the years the program has expanded to different communities across Canada and the world as more and more people joined. As of last year, there were more than 56,000 volunteers and the program is now recognized as one of the largest direct action

conservation programs in the world. In early September of this year, the second year Recreation, Fish and Wildlife students from Selkirk College went on a five-day canoe trip on Slocan Lake. It was proposed prior to the trip that they participate in the The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. The class started the trip from the Slocan City boat launch and ventured all the way up to the launch on the northernmost point of the lake. They stayed close to the west side, along Valhalla Provincial Park during the trip, picking up garbage as they went along. The big pieces were

easy to spot and take care of, but they were equally interested in taking care of the micro garbage, the small stuff around the size of a loonie. The group stopped at every beach/ campground. Over the five-day trip the class cleaned about 42 km of shoreline. They found tires, gas cans, cigarette butts, ammo shells, plastic etc., with inflated balloons as being the strangest piece of garbage. Tip of the hat to local volunteers PHARMASAVE CRAIG LINDSAY Castlegar News Reporter

Everywhere you look in Castlegar you can find the many volunteers who make this city a vibrant place. Whether it’s Sculpturewalk, Art Walk, one of the many local festivals, any school or community sporting event, music concerts, - mostly are are volunteer driven. Imagine the city without these events? it’s tough. But without volunteers - quite simply, they don’t happen. Fortunately, there is no shortage of volunteers willing to put their time in for the reward of feeling good about getting something done and

helping people out. Last Thursday evening the City of Castlegar held a volunteer appreciation event at the Fireside Inn. More than 100 people from dozens

of different groups and clubs were in attendance. “We had a great turnout,” said Castlegar mayor Lawrence Chernoff, who, alongside the other

council members, gave a speech thanking all the volunteers. “It’s to give a little acknowledgement to all the volunteers in the community,” he said. “It’s a small thing to do, but important. We as council feel it’s necessary.” Chernoff says that without the many volunteers, Castlegar would not be the great community it is. “It’s a nice way to recognize some of the people who volunteer,” he said. “They put in all this time for no money, it’s about dedication and pride in the community. Without volunteers - you couldn’t accomplish anything in the community.”

During the flu season, pharmacists often hear comments like “I’m pretty healthy, I don’t need a flu shot.” Flu shots protect not only you but the people around you, especially babies under the age of six months and older people with chronic diseases. There is safety in numbers because the more the people that get their flu shots, the fewer will get the flu. Winterfest a little over a week away Staff Castlegar News

This year’s Winterfest runs on Friday, November 30 and it’s all about community spirit and fun. Help your friends and neighbours look on the bright side. Join the crowd at Spirit Square, right in front of City Hall and have some fun. Friday evening the

weekend kicks off with a sing-along at 5:15 p.m. featuring the New Life Assembly Choir; then Rec Rockers, children’s dance class; a presentation at 5:40 p.m. by a local Communities in Bloom contingent followed at 6 p.m. by the parade of lights proceeding through the downtown core as part of the 17th annual Winterfest event.

Countdown to the tree light up goes at 6:35 p.m. then more music and from the choir. The parade is a delight for kids both on the floats and on the sidelines, and the festivities are capped off with the arrival of Santa Claus himself. The tree in Spirit Square is lit up and kids have the chance to sit on Santa’s knee

and tell him what they want. On-site food vendors doing their thing starting at 5 p.m. means you have no supper arrangements to make. The first weekend of December hits, and you feel like doing nothing but hibernating. That is, of course, until you realize that the 17th Annual Winter Fest is going

on. You put on your hat, mitts, jacket and boots, grab the kids, and head to downtown Castlegar in the gently falling snow. Help make the 17th staging the best ever. Get together with friends, family and neighbours for Winterfest celebrations Friday, November 30 at Spirit Square in the heart of downtown Castlegar.

The Bra Lady Is Coming to Size You Up

Are you tired of feeling saggy, lumpy, pinched or strained? Well you’re not alone. As you’ve probably seen on Oprah or read in women’s magazines, over 80 per cent of all women wear the wrong size bra.

Chapman is coming to CASTLEGAR ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 27Th to outfit you with the best possible bra for your body. Chapman said she will be seeing clients on a oneon-one basis, explaining the benefits of good bras and measuring their bodies properly. “Most women just want to find a good-fitting bra that’s not uncomfortable,” Chapman said. “What they don’t realize is that a good support bra is also important for blood circulation and enhanced lymph drainage.”

Chapman has over 200 bra sizes available for ordering, ranging from 30AA to 52KK. It’s likely that you’ll fit somewhere between those sizes. She offers these questions for women to ask themselves: • Do you have a drawer full of bras but none that fit comfortably? • Does your bust line “bounce” when you walk while wearing your “everyday” bra? • Do you overflow the cup of your bra? • Do your bra straps slip off your shoulders or dig into your shoulders leaving red and painful marks? • Does your bra ride up in the back because you tighten the straps to give you added support? • Have you ever begun an exercise class only to drop out because your breasts ached from lack of support while jumping or running? If you answer yes to any of these you are in need of a new bra, and a custom one could be the way to go.

Health event goes over big JIM SINCLAIR

Castlegar News Editor

Good health has always been important, but perhaps the practice of avoiding illness has never had such a high priority as lately. Backing up that suggestion was a wellness clinic, the second within a month, held Friday, Nov. 16 at Castlegar’s Fireside Inn. A Calgary-based, non-profit foundation called Pure North Synergy staged the clinic which drew

Community related fundraiser kicks off submitted

On November 9, volunteers spent hours stuffing 5,000 envelopes for Castlegar & District Community Services annual major fundraising campaign. The target this season is $18,000, most of which will help to combat family violence and support community development services. “Violence destroys families and destroys lives,” said CDCSS Board Chair Roberta Hamilton. “Community support helps us go beyond government funded services into the area of prevention.” Dealing with violence is often after the fact, one-on-one, between a counsel-

lor and a victim or perpetrator, to help them understand and control the causes of conflict. Unfortunately, violence may also involve the police, courts and penal system. Effective prevention is a much cheaper option that must be applied globally and continuously rather than individually. Prevention includes drawing attention to the issue, even persuading people that it is an issue, and education. To draw attention to the problem, CDCSS supports such actions as the annual Take Back the Night march, and the Clothesline Project, the latter displaying t-shirts decorated by children in the com-

munity. Educational and supportive programs include the Parenting Groups, financed by contributions from the community. These help to develop improved parenting skills, which reduce the risk of family violence. In addition, CDCSS assumed a leadership role in furthering the RCMP’s Community Prevention Education Continuum, and in addressing the issue of sexual exploitation of young girls. Last year’s fundraising drive netted $7,000, which went towards the Parenting Groups, resources for families, and Camp Esq. for boys presenting behavioural risks. Fourteen boys have joined community

based activities and linked up with male mentors. Letters and contribution forms will be going to every household in Castlegar and Robson, and recipients are asked to donate what they can during this season when they are bombarded with requests for money. In addition, the community is invited to an Open House on Thursday, November 24, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the CDCSS office at 1007-2nd Street. “Come and see who we are,” said Hamilton. “Check out our building, meet staff and volunteers, learn more about our services, and enjoy some family-friendly refreshments.”

COUNCIL APPOINTMENTS The City of Castlegar invites applications from persons interested in volunteering to serve on a Council appointed Board or Committee. This could include the Board of Variance, Advisory Planning Commission or other committee deemed necessary by Council. Those interested are requested to submit a written application and resume - CLEARLY MARKED “VOLUNTEER POSITION” – to the City no later than 4:30 p.m. on Friday, December 7, 2012. Applications and resumes should be forwarded to the attention of: Carolyn Rempel, Director of Corporate Services, City of Castlegar, 460 Columbia Avenue, Castlegar, BC V1N 1G7 Phone: (250) 365-7227 Fax: (250) 365-4810 Email: crempel@castlegar.ca Applications and resumes will be retained by the City of Castlegar for a period of one year. Pursuant to the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, the information collected will be utilized solely for the selection or appointment of committee members.

Community Making a Mountain into... a... Movember! Craig Lindsay Castlegar News Reporter

Mountain FM is teaming up with the Lion’s Head Pub and Andrew Sheret to make Movember 2012 the biggest men’s health month the Kootenays has ever seen. The Mountain FM team has raised over $800 so far with morning show cohost John Helm leading the fundraising efforts with $350 in donations. Andrew Sherett Ltd. has raised more than $4,000 themselves and their corporate head office has raised $16,000 throughout the prov-

ince. The big event wraps up on Dec. 1 with a big party at the Lion’s Head Pub. The Movember party features live music from local band Such Great Madness and lots of great prizes. “It’s a friendly competition to get more money for Movember,” said Lion’s Head co-owner Troy Pyett. “So we’re having a party on Dec. 1 with a live band and all the proceeds from the door will go to Movember. We’ll have prizes for the best moustaches and that type of thing. We’ll also have some door prizes and announce the final fund raising tallies.”

Chelan Padmoroff is a first year nursing student at Selkirk College and a native of Castlegar. Rebels fall just short of Okanagan trip sweep

Craig Lindsay

Castlegar News Reporter

A weekend road trip to the North Okanagan proved rather fruitful for the Castlegar Rebels as they managed to pick up five of six possible points. All three games were decided by two goals or less. “It was a good weekend,” said Rebels’ head coach Steve Junker. “Obviously, we would’ve liked to have won all three. We showed a lot of character in the last game in coming back (versus North Okanagan) and getting a point out of it. That division is tough. They all played us hard.” Junker was pleased with the all round team effort throughout the weekend. “It was a full team effort in all our games,” he said. “I thought it was a good team building weekend. They were close games, so we really had to pull up our socks.” On Friday in Chase the Rebels earned a 3-2 victory over the Heat, outshooting their hosts 37-24 in the process. The Rebels par-

layed goals by Dylan Bowerman (Darren Medeiros); Bryan Lubin (Riley Ostoforoff) and Hunter Jenerou (Braden Heinrich and Medeiros) into a pair of valuable points on the road. Netminder Jordan Gluck was solid in nets, playing the full 60 minutes and stopping 22 of 24 shots. Finding the target for the Heat were Dominick Hodges (Aiden Silzer-Hooker and Taylor Jordan) and Drew Wilde (Dominick Hodges and Taylor Jordan.) “I thought that was our weakest game of the weekend,” said Junker. “Whether it was the bus legs or not - I didn’t think we had our best outing but we bounced back Saturday against a strong Kamloop team.” The Kootenay group earned a 5-3 win against the Storm in Kamloops in a game that saw several momentum shifts. The Rebels stormed out of the gate with a 3-0 lead at the end of the first period. Putting their squad in control were Brenden Heinrich from Bryan Lubin and Peter

Mingus; Lubin from Darren Medeiros and Kody Disher; then Disher on an unassisted power play effort. With three minutes to go in the second frame the Storm had clawed back on even terms. With the Rebels down a man, Devin Oakes would break the goose-egg with helpers from Daniel Buchanan and Josh Rasmussen. Josh Rasmussen, again on the power play would then draw his team within one, set up by Ryan Skinner and Devin Oakes. The equalizer came courtesy of Buchanan from Oakes and Skinner. Castlegar headed into the second intermission having regained the upper hand with a tally from Jamie Vlanich (Dylan Bowerman). The third period was scoreless until the insurance goal was recorded, unassisted, by Castlegar’s Diego Bartlett into an empty net with under a minute on the clock. It was Connor Beauchamp backstopping the Rebel’s win, while Marcus Continued on P. 21

Saints face off for food bank

submitted

Following a rare weekend off, the Selkirk College Men’s Hockey team will be looking to extend their BCIHL regular season win streak to 11 games when Eastern Washington University (EWU) visits the Castlegar Rec Complex on Saturday night for a 7:30 p.m. faceoff. The evening will double as a food drive benefiting the Selkirk College Student Union’s Food Bank.

No Stars hockey Are you an adult who has played hockey in the past and would like to start up again? Want to get out and get some exercise in a fun environment? Then the No Stars hockey club is for you. No Stars is a group that plays once a week (9:30 p.m. Tuesdays at the Memorial) in Castlegar and has No Stars, no hitting, no slap-shots, no hot dogs, just fun. For info email Chris at cjbarlow@telus.net.

Rebel recap Continued from P. 20

Beesley was in the nets for the Storm. The Rebels had a 4331 edge in the shot department. The Rebels threegame swing covering the Shuswap, Thompson and North Okanagan areas concluded Sunday. Following wins in Chase and Kamloops, on Friday and Saturday, respectively, the Castlegar squad fell in overtime to the North Okanagan Knights in Armstrong. The loss snapped the Rebels nine game winning string. “It was a tough game to lose,” said Junker. “We had a great start. We could’ve been up easily in the first period but found ourselves

All fans who bring a non-perishable food item or donate $2 or more on Saturday night will be entered for the chance to participate in an on-ice turkey bowling contest during the second intermission. The turkey bowling winner will take home their turkey and a prize package from Selkirk College and team sponsors. Providing the opposition this weekend will be an Eagles team that has run hot and cold over the open-

ing six weeks of the regular season. EWU topped Thompson Rivers in overtime on Saturday night to end a three-game losing skid and currently sits third in the BCIHL standings with a 4-40-1 record. “Eastern Washington has some highlyskilled offensive players who will make you pay for your defensive letdowns and errors,” says Saints head coach Jeff Dubois. “They also have one of the better goaltending tandems in our league, so we

need to take advantage of any opportunities that present themselves.” The match-up represents the first regular season meeting between EWU and the Saints. The teams faced off once during exhibition play, with Selkirk notching a 6-1 home win. Dubois expects a much tougher battle this time around. “When we played in preseason everybody was just working on getting the rust out,” says Dubois.

down 2-0. Simply, we couldn’t score. We had numerous chances - I think we outshot them 16-5 or something like that.” Junker credited Knights’ goalie Beesley with a strong effort in securing the win for North Okanagan. “He played really well and we weren’t able to finish off a few nice plays that we had,” he said. “Territorially, I thought we dominated the first period. But that’s what happens when you can’t put teams away. You give them a chance to get back in the game and that’s what they did. They got stronger and stronger as the game went on. It was a battle right down to the end in overtime.” The hosts held a 2-1 lead after the

first period. Scoring for the Knights were Matt Lambert (Nathan Brown) then Lambert again (Derek Andrews and Matty Saharchuk) before Castlegar got on the board thanks to Hunter Jenerou (Tanner Johnson) on the power play. The Rebels tied it in the second with Stuart Walton (from Jamie Vlanich and Diego Bartlett) notching the lone goal of the period before the teams traded markers in the third – Morgan Johnston (Josh Ellis) for the Knights and Darren Medeiros (Erik Alden) with a shorthanded effort for the Rebels. The game was wrapped up in the first overtime period with Derek Andrews (Johnston) finding the mark.

The game was not without its share of chippiness, with the visitors being assessed 12 penalties to the hosts’ eight. Connor Beauchamp was again in nets for the Rebels, stopping 21 of 25 shots, while the North Okanagan’s Austin Buzzell handled 38 of 41. Next up for the Rebels is a Thursday (Nov. 22, 7:30 p.m.) tilt versus the Border Bruins in Grand Forks. On Saturday, the Rebels finish seven straight road games with a tussle in Kimberley against the Dynamiters. Castlegar is in third place in the Neil Murdoch division with a 16-4-3-1 record good for 36 points, two behind division, and KIJHL, leading Nelson.

When he was not walking or hiking, he would swim at the Complex. To keep track of the laps, he would have pennies at one end and, after two laps, would stop long enough to place a penny in a cup. When the pennies were gone, he had done his 50 laps. Dad loved to watch sports, in particular football and hockey and for a few years kept score for the Rebels. He also loved playing crib and whist. In 2002, he and Jessie each took two gold medals playing whist at the BC Senior Games. Dad was lucky to have had two “loves of his life”, Marie Beresowsky, whom he married in 1944, and Jessie Hymers, whom he married in 2000. Both wonderful women predeceased him. He was also predeceased by his parents, his son, Leslie James Johnson, his older brother and his wife, Stanley (Margarette) Johnson, his younger sister and her husband, Mary Isabel (John) Thompson, and his nephew, Glenn Johnson. He is survived by his daughter, Lynne (Keith) Johnson, his step-children, James (Dianne) Hymers, Linda Cripps, Lois (Wayne) Cromarty, and Sherrill (Wayne) Hyde and their families, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, his niece and three nephews. Thank you to Sarah and Bill at Castlegar Funeral Chapel, the staff at Castlewood Village, Dr. Ellen Smart, Dr. David Larocque, the staff at Talarico Place, our friends for your caring and support, and Amy, whose caring and assistance over the past few years Dad and his family could not have done without.
