Members of Terrace Search and Rescue search a section of Whiskey Creek where Ohio tourist Warren Sill went missing in July. A full scale search in the summer was called off but area search and rescue technicians returned several times to continue searching as water levels dropped. Sill was subsequently found Nov. 17.

Missing hiker’s body is located NEW HAZELTON - New Hazelton RCMP and Search and Rescue located the body of missing hiker, Warren Andrew Sill from Ohio Nov. 16. “Thank-you to everyone who assisted in this search, your hard work and dedication is very much appreciated,” said Terrace Search and Rescue president Dwayne Sheppard. In July of this year, Sill came up from Ohio to film a documentary on the Kermode Bear, telling his family he would only be away for four or five days. New Hazelton RCMP got a call about an abandoned vehicle, which was Sill’s, at the entrance of the Whiskey Creek Trail in the Gull Creek area of New Hazelton. The biggest search, since the

Mount Elizabeth search in 2002, began, said Sheppard. Thirteen search and rescue groups plus other groups started searching for him July 13, eight days after he went missing. “Some days we had up to 200 people [searching],” said Sheppard. After few clues were found, the search was shut down July 20. Terrace Search and Rescue said it intended to continue to look for Sills as part of training sessions. and went back to the area in August, September, and October. On November 10, Terrace SAR used rope rescue team members to lower two swiftwater rescue technicians into the canyon to search the last remaining stretches of Whiskey Creek. The members found a green

On Nov. 16, Terrace Search and Rescue members took rope rescue and swiftwater equipment out again. The members lowered themselves into the creek and went about 75 metres downstream. After lowering themselves through a chute and swimming across a pool, the team arrived at the remaining unsearched area, about 50m below where the tshirt was found. Approximately 35 m below a waterfall was a debris jam of logs, sticks and rocks. At approximately 12:30 p.m., search and rescue members found Sill’s remains inside the debris jam. His body was removed and handed over to the provincial coroner. For more details, see page 6.

Prince Rupert mayor says CN and port flying fish not living up to commitments they made

... cooking, living, giving

By Shaun Thomas

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - Prince Rupert Mayor Jack Mussallem has accused CN and the Prince Rupert Port Authority of failing to live up to their obligations to the community. “While generally supportive of the Fairview Terminal Phase II Expansion Project, Prince Rupert City Council is concerned that a number of issues may negatively impact residents who live near the terminal location... Prince Rupert City Council is concerned that previously made commitments by project proponents have not been met and there seems to be little recourse for members of the public when commitments during environmental review processes are made but not implemented,” reads a Nov. 14 letter obtained by the Prince Rupert Northern View, which is signed by the mayor. The letter points to the environmental screening document completed in 2006, which said that trains would not be using the level crossing leading to the BC Ferries terminal but would depart south from the site, and that the Prince Rupert Port Authority would create a phone line people could call to complain about noise and establish procedures for dealing with

those complaints. “Unfortunately none of these statements have stood the test of time. To this day trains are moving into the Prince Rupert downtown rail yard and a noise complaint phone number has not been established,” reads the letter. However, a search of the Prince Rupert Port Authority website shows a Community Comment Line phone number in the “Contact Information” section of the site. The Prince Rupert Northern View called the phone number, which greets callers with a recording indicating that messages are checked daily, with all messages recorded and directed to the appropriate departments. Further, the message asks callers to leave a phone number or e-mail address so the Prince Rupert Port Authority can follow up on the message. The City also calls into doubt the assurance that “noise and vibration are predicted to be not significant” found in the Comprehensive Study for Phase II based on the operation of Phase I. “Prince Rupert City Council understands what the proponents are stating in regards to potential increase in rail traffic noise the Fairview Phase II Expansion Project will create, but remains skeptical of their

predictions based on an uneven track record of being able to foresee accurately how operations will eventually evolve... As the proponent was unable to predict the amount of traffic entering into the downtown Prince Rupert rail yard for the initial phase of developing the Fairview Container Port, what assurances can the City and members of the public count on regarding predictions regarding noise and vibration mitigation strategies this time around?” Mayor Mussallem also questions whether the Prince Rupert Port Authority should be involved in the decision at all. “Council also notes that the Federal responsible authority for the Fairview Terminal Phase II Expansion Project Environmental Assessment is the Prince Rupert Port Authority

itself. The Prince Rupert Port Authority is also identified as a proponent and this appears to be a direct conflict of interest. Council is concerned that these facts may undermine the credibility of the Environmental Review process,” it reads. The Prince Rupert Port Authority said it will not be publicly commenting on the contents of the letter. “The Port Authority will be responding directly to the City about its concerns,” said Manager of Corporate Communications Michael Gurney. The letter from the mayor of Prince Rupert was addressed to Prince Rupert Port Authority vice-president of project management Lorne Keller, project manager Bryan Nelson and CN’s system manager of environmental assessment Luanne Patterson.

HIV is a real concern within our communities. You can contract HIV primarily through unprotected sex and by sharing needles. HIV can live in your body for years without you knowing and all the while you can be passing it to others. At least 25 per cent of people who are HIV+ do not know and these 25 per cent are estimated to be responsible for 75 per cent of new infections. Northern Health, in collaboration with its community partners, is working with the Province of BC to prevent the spread of HIV by expanding HIV testing, treatment, and support services to British Columbians.

the mountain top, which is the agreement between the Haida Nation and the Government of Canada,” said Edenshaw in describing the design. The date of the last pole raised in Gwaii Haanas is unknown, those involved in the project say it is likely at least 130 years ago as research shows the villages left Sgang Gwaay in 1887 or 1888. And while no new poles have been put up there have been a number of poles removed from the area, including 11 poles removed by the BC Totem Pole Preservation Committee in 1957. The Government of Canada, which is undertaking the pole carving and raising in partnership with the Haida Nation, has committed $130,000 to the carving of the pole.

SKIDEGATE - For the first time in more than a century, members of the Haida Nation will be erecting a totem pole in the areas covered by Gwaii Haanas National Park. The 42-foot Legacy Pole, which will be erected next August, will be carved at the Haida Heritage Centre in Skidegate over the next nine months by Haida artist Jaalen Edenshaw and his apprentice Tyler York. Edenshaw was chosen for the job by a committee made up of the Council of the Haida Nation, a Haida carver, a hereditary chief and two representatives from the Gwaii Haanas National Park. “Today marks the beginning of a year of celebration for Gwaii Haanas, celebration, celebration of the connection between two governments who work together to protect and manage Gwaii Haanas,” said Gwaii Haanas manager Ernie Gladstone. The theme for the design of the pole is “Land, Sea, People” which tells the story of the Haida Nation and the Government of Canada to sign the South Moresby Agreement 25 years ago and includes representation of visitors, archaeologists, the Haida Watchmen and the protestors at Lyell Island. “The bottom figure is a sculpin, and on the very top is an eagle and what they represent together is the protection of Gwaii Haanas from the ocean floor to

Kitimat eagle recovering well THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

KITIMAT - Joseph Pauloski was sitting in his excavator at the Kitimat landfill when he caught sight of something falling into the quarry. When he went in for a closer look he found an eagle on the ground, its wings extended. He thought that could mean only a couple of things; it was protecting some food from other birds, or something was wrong. He gave the eagle five minutes before moving in. “He flew away once but he couldn’t really get off the ground,” said Pauloski. “I went up to him with my jacket, took my jacket off and threw it around him...he didn’t even struggle.” He walked the eagle back to the shed and they called the Kitimat Humane Society. The local shelter manager made the drive to Prince Rupert to get the bird help at the Prince Rupert Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. Since finding the eagle last Wednesday, Nov. 14, and since the eagle was delivered to Prince Rupert the day after, it has been making great progress back to health. “He must have ate something bad,” said Gunther Golinia, who runs Prince Rupert’s wildlife shelter with wife Nancy. “We treated him with charcoal and electrolytes. He’s really perking up.” He added that nothing appeared to be broken on the eagle. He said they receive eagles as far away as Burns Lake and they release them from Prince Rupert once they’re back to health. Eagles are great navigators and know how to travel. He said they get birds coming in from the Prince Rupert landfill at times too, where they had eaten something bad, such as cleaning chemicals mixed with the trash. “It’s awful hard on the birds,” he said. Their shelter has seen about 40 eagles throughout the year, with eight still in their shelter. As of Monday morning, the eagle continued it’s health upswing and was even flying again. Gunther Golinia said that the bird is eating well and isn’t ex-

pecting any further complications with its health. The bird’s discharge date is still unknown. “He lost quite a bit of muscle mass so we want to make sure we don’t prematurely release him,” he said. Gunther said they released five eagles from their shelter on Sunday, leaving only four left in their care, leaving the Kitimat eagle plenty of room to fan out. “He’s doing really good.” As for Pauloski, he said he wasn’t nervous at all approaching the eagle. The fact the eagle didn’t look nervous about him being there helped. But Pauloski also has experience with bird rescue. When he was about 12-or-13-years-old on Masset he said he was walking to school and found a trumpeter swan flailing in the snow. He did then what he did last week; wrapped it up in his jacket and took it to their animal shelter. “That made front page news,” he said. Pauloksi said a huge thanks needs to be given to the Kitimat Humane Society who were quick to respond to the call of the eagle, and of course to the team at the Prince Rupert Wildlife Rehab Shelter. “They are the true heroes in this story,” Pauloski said.

Search for Ohio man detailed stream of the trail/creek crossing. The creek has step sidewalls and at several locations below the trail/ creek crossing, access out of the canyon via the creek side slopes is practically impossible. Team 2, searching the upstream portion of Whiskey Creek, located a hat in the creek bed – 150 m above the creek/trail crossing. It was unknown if it belonged to Sill and it was investigated. Team 2 ended its search inside the canyon above a series of steep pitches and waterfalls; it was unable to safely move downstream beyond this point. Several plunge pools and debris strainers were also searched in this area. Terrace SAR Technicians revisited Whiskey Creek Oct. 24 with a four person team, searching upstream from the highway to the base of the 40-foot waterfall. One section above the waterfall (approx. 65m), consisting of stepped falls and pools, remained the only section of Whiskey Creek not searched. To search the area, SRTs would have to be lowered into the pool area from the upper slope of the river - approximately 25m. During the three revisits since the search end-

ed, the team has been able to find items such as a hat and a glove at different locations in the creek bed and worked on determining if these belonged to Sill. The team decided to continue searching the area as part of training until weather conditions deteriorated. On Nov. 10, eight Terrace SAR members searched in Whiskey Creek; a steep area with difficult access. The team used rope rescue team members to lower two swiftwater rescue technicians into the canyon to search the last remaining stretches of Whiskey Creek. Members located a green shirt frozen into debris in the creek; the shirt had a logo Dr. Casey O’(info missing), Orthodontist and a logo. An internet search revealed a Dr. Casey O’Conor - Orthodontist as a doctor in Ohio. The shirt also resembled pictures from the doctor’s Facebook page. Sill’s parents confirmed that he was a patient of Dr. O’Conor. The team was excited about this clue and considered how to continue search efforts. On Nov. 14, the team returned to Whiskey Creek, travelling upstream from

the highway to the base of the waterfalls where it used an underwater camera and swim goggles to search the bottom of the pool. Considering the shirt was found above the waterfall, the team felt it was necessary to do a second more effective search of the pool. Nothing was found. On Nov. 16, Terrace Search and Rescue started searching in Whiskey Creek. The team hiked 30 minutes into the search area with rope rescue and swiftwater equipment. The members lowered themselves into the creek; they travelled approx. 75 meters downstream. After lowering members through a chute and swimming across a pool, the team arrived at the start of the unsearched area, about 50m below the tshirt). Approximately 35 m below this water fall was a debris jam of logs, sticks and rocks. At about 12:30 p.m., team members located the Sill’s remains inside the debris jam. His body was removed and handed over to the provincial coroner. Thank-you to everyone who assisted in this search, your hard work and dedication is very much appreciated.

NEW HAZELTON - Terrace Search and Rescue president Dwayne Sheppard released the details of the multiple searches for Sill from July when he went missing until his body was found Nov. 17. Warren Andrew Sill of Ohio last spoke to his family July 4 this year – he stated he would be exploring in the area for four to five days. Sill was last seen July 5 at about 1:30 p.m. at the Whiskey Creek Trailhead. On July 10, New Hazelton RCMP received a complaint of an abandoned vehicle parked at Gull Creek. Sill had been missing for eight days when the search started. On July 13, 13 Northwest search and rescue (SAR) teams mobilized their resources; it was a combined effort of SAR teams from Terrace, Smithers, Kitimat, Houston, Stewart, Nechako Valley, Prince George, Lions Bay, Central Fraser Valley, Mission, Maple Ridge, Comox, and Vancouver Island Resources. The teams were assisted by Terrace Emergency Radio Communicators, Bulkley Valley Amateur Radio Society, Salvation Army Terrace Corps, Hazelton Rainmakers and Saw Crew, Prince George Amateur Radio Club, Forestry Crews, BC Parks, and numerous others. The Northwest has not seen a search this large since the 2002 Mount Elizabeth search. SAR teams covered an extensive area with ground crews, dog search teams, swiftwater crews, and helicopters. Few credible clues were found during the search; Sill’s vehicle was removed from the highway and the search was scaled down and then was closed July 20. On Aug. 14, Terrace SAR resumed the search for Sill as an Emergency Management BC training task. Four Terrace SAR members did a walk through in the Whiskey Creek area. The team hiked up the trail and about 1.5 km beyond the stream crossing. An assessment of the water depth and flow determined the team should wait for water levels to drop before searching the stream. On Sept. 25, Terrace Search and Rescue Swiftwater Rescue Technicians (SRTs) conducted a search of the Whiskey Creek Drainage. Four SRTs and one ground support member hiked in 2 km on the trail and began searching at the trail/creek crossing; Team 3 searched upstream 1.7 km and Team 2 searched 1.2 km down-

Athletes World closing in Rupert By Shaun Thomas

PRINCE RUPERT - Prince Rupert will be losing one of its retail businesses early next year. Athletes World, located in the upper floor of the Rupert Square Mall, is going out of business as its parent company restructures its operations. “The store will be closing on Jan. 27, 2013. Athletes World is

being phased out by March because we are putting more focus on our core brands, Sport Chek and Atmosphere,” said FGL Sports Ltd. public relations specialist Brandon Arnold. And while Athlete’s World is closing down, Arnold said the company may not necessarily be done with Prince Rupert. “We are looking at a number of different leases to see if there is a Sport Chek or Atmosphere

near by. If there isn’t then there is some studying to be done to see if it is a possible location,” he said. When Athletes World closes, it will join Fields, Zellers and Salty Crab as stores that have closed in the Rupert Square Mall in the past year. However, during that same time, Walmart, Shoppers Drug Mart, Dollarama and Express News have opened in the mall.

Resident receives Queen’s Jubilee medal By Staff Writer THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

NEW HAZELTON - On Wednesday November 7, 2012, Lyn West, the Office Manager, of the New Hazelton Detachment received a medal recognizing her contributions to Canada. To celebrate her Diamond Jubilee Anniversary as Queen, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II ordered that a commemorative medal be struck and presented to Canadians. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police was allotted 2,300 medals to award to deserving regular and civilian members. This provided the force an opportunity to recognize some of the tremendous work our employees are doing everyday while contributing to a better and safer Canada. Earlier this year, a

nomination period was held and the medal winners were selected. Lyn West was one of the recipients of this honour. “Lyn West has been employed at the New Hazelton detachment for nearly 24 years and has always gone above and beyond while continuously serving in her community” stated Detachment Commander Sergeant Jeff Pelley, “Lyn West’s nominations were known to set a record, where she received 14 nominations from various officers and fellow colleagues posted at New Hazelton over the years”. The medals were awarded by the Commanding Officer of the BC RCMP, Deputy Commissioner Craig Callens, during a ceremony in front of friends and family in Prince George. The medals were

TERRACE - In the winter months storms hit B.C. more frequently. This increases the potential for power outages. BC Hydro is suggesting six easy steps to ensure you and your family are better prepared. 1. Know the number to call when the power goes out. To report an outage, call 1-888-POWERON or *HYDRO on your mobile phone. Automatic notification will be available through smart meters once all meters have been installed and the system is fully operational over the next year. 2. Have an emergency kit ready. The kit should include: flashlights, a battery-operated radio, extra batteries, a corded telephone, warm clothing and blankets, a first aid kit, nonperishable, ready-to-eat foods and a copy of your emergency preparedness plan. 3. If there is an outage, turn off all appli-

ances and electronics, especially electric heaters. When power is restored, power will rush to all items left in the

“on” position which can cause the system to overload and possibly cause a second outage. 4. When the power

is out, turn off all lights except one inside the home and one outside. The inside light lets you know when the power

is back on and the outside light lets BC Hydro crews know.

Madison Violet brings unique colour to Kitimat Contributed

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

KITIMAT - On Saturday Nov. 24 at 8:00 p.m. please join the Kitimat Concert Association in welcoming Madison Violet to the stage of the Mount Elizabeth Theatre. Let this wonderful folk duo use their harmonious melodies to turn your winter blues a delicate shade of “violet’. Brenley MacEachern and Lisa MacIsaac met in a Toronto green room in 1999. They were strangers who were working in different projects at the time and happened to be playing the same venue. They got to talking and wound up talking about their lineage as they were both from the East Coast of Canada. Much to their surprise they found out that not only did they know each other’s families but their father’s actually sat together in high school. From such a serendipitous beginning came the duo now called “Madison Violet”. They first made their mark on the wall of Canadian folk as “Madviolet” with their album “Worry the Jury” in 2004. With each album they’ve released since then it seems that every strummed chord, dreamy harmony, and subtle stroke of the bow brings “Madison Violet” new fans. As they’ve grown together as friends and artists their capacity for crafting rich, memorable arrangements has expanded as well. Their writing styles, though somewhat different, reflect their roots and compliment each other wonderfully. MacIsaac grew up surrounded by the Atlantic on Cape Breton Island while MacEachern’s family is also from Cape Breton but she was born in southwestern Ontario and her output carries a slightly more contemporary tinge. So please join the Kitimat Concert Association as we give a big welcome to the lovely and talented “Madison Violet”. Tickets may be purchased at the door or get them ahead of time at Hollywood Video.

Man found

KITIMAT - Kitimat Search & Rescue (KSAR) was called out Oct. 29 at 4:30 a.m. to respond to a missing 42-year-old male on the Coho Flats trail system. Two teams were dispatched on foot and searched from the trail head, as well as the Hirsch Creek Golf Course trail connector. The man was located at 7:15 a.m. and after being accessed it was determined he could hike out with the assistance of KSAR. He was then handed over to paramedics from the Kitimat Fire Department for further assessment. KSAR would like to thank the Kitimat Fire Department, RCMP, and employees from the Fish Hatchery for their assistance and successful outcome to this task.

City council asked to help address Prince Rupert’s growing feral cat problems By Shaun Thomas

The Northern connector

PRINCE RUPERT - Cat lovers made a passionate plea to Prince Rupert city council on Nov. 13: Become part of the feral cat solution before the problem in the city gets any worse. Alice Kruta of the Cannery Row Animal Shelter was joined by Kim St. Pierre in asking council to reconsider a request by Prince Rupert SPCA manager Anna Terebka to provide $7,500 for a trap, neuter, release program, but also asked council to allow the group to construct feeding stations at various points around town. “Anna was right when she said that we are in crisis mode... If we don’t do something about this Prince Rupert will have cats that are like rats. Prince Rupert will be overrun with cats,” said Kruta, adding that diseases carried by the cats is a major concern. “If we don’t do something to address the population, we’re going to have cats dying of disease. Kids will come across the dead cats and be curious, so you will have kids handling dead bodies,” added St. Pierre. Kruta said that the SPCA, the Prince Rupert Wildlife Shelter and

the Cannery Row Shelter Association are united in their desire to have this addressed, and they feel the community as a whole is largely behind them. “A lot of residents in Prince Rupert are digging deep into their pockets to help solve this problem,” said St. Pierre, who says she has spent thousand of dollars of her own money spaying and neutering cats and helping them find new homes. “I have elders saying they can’t pay their mortgage and that they went to the bank again because they can’t pay their mortgage but they also can’t let the cats they’re feeding starve... I have had so much support from people and from businesses. The only place the support hasn’t come from is from the governments, which is sad when you look at what other districts are doing,” said Kruta, pointing to a $2.8 million animal shelter built earlier this year in Delta. And while council will discuss the impassioned request at the next meeting, some councillors expressed concern about supporting it. “We have social issues in this town, we’re losing money because we’re losing industry and there is not a lot of money left. We’re

stretched thin... We don’t have the resources to do anything about this. That $7,500 may seem small, but it is still $7,500. That $7,500 is money that might not go to a group that is doing things for children in

town, and I put children above cats at this point,” said councillor Gina Garon. “I see inhumanity in trap, neuter, release. What I see with feral cats is starving cats, diseased cats, cats freezing

and with feeding stations I imagine sanitation concerns... As much as I hate to say euthanizing, I hate to see cats suffering and with trap, neuter, release I see cats suffering,” added councillor Anna Ashley.

Lights festival in the works By Staff Writer

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - Organizers are hard at work on the Kermode Festival of Lights. It’s to take place Saturday, Dec. 1 from 6 p, to 8 pm at George Little Park in downtown Terrace. Being planned is a Kermode mini parade through the park, free family activities, music and hayrides. Also in the works is a Parade of Lights down Lakelse Ave. It’s being put together by the Terrace and District Chamber of Commerce. “Apologies for the late delivery of this information but we had thought we had another group that

was going to organize the parade, but at the last minute we discovered that they had opted not do the parade due to the complications of the logistics,” wrote Carol Fielding in an email. “We are very fortunate this year to get the support of Nechako Northcoast’s traffic control crew that work for their Bill-a-Bong division, this gives us the support we need on the street closures and the traffic control, very critical for the safety of everyone,” she said. “As many will remember we ended up cancelling the parade last year due to poor participation numbers, this year we are late making our call for entries, so I am asking that if you are planning to enter a float to please contact

me asap via email or by phone, in order to make the closures viable we need at least 15-plus entries.” “This does not necessarily mean a float, it could be your company van decorated or a walking entry of your group or organization, anything goes as long as it is about the holiday season,” Fielding continued. “Make sure you plan for the cold & wet….although I have sent a request to Mother Nature to help us out this year,” Fielding continued. Fielding can be contacted at the Terrace and District Chamber of Commerce office, 250-6352063. It would take place before the event in George Little Park.

GATEWAY perspectives

Spill response plan Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been talking about the precautions, the safety measures, and the selection criteria involved in the marine elements of the Gateway project — all of them intended to prevent an oil spill on water. I’ve also mentioned, in recent weeks, how Gateway’s marine safety program was examined by an independent risk-assessment group, which determined that the chances of a major spill are once in more than 15,000 years. Although statistics and reports suggest a marine oil spill is unlikely, you want to know — what if one does occur? How will Gateway be prepared? While the chances are slim, we continue to develop a world-class marine response program. The Northern Gateway Project includes a spill response capacity that’s more than three times the Canadian regulation. And while the Canadian requirement for oil spill response is 72 hours plus travel time, our response time will be a fraction of that number — 6 to 12 hours in the marine channels. This is a significant increase to the response capability available to B.C.’s north coast. Additionally, for immediate response, our tug escorts will be

equipped with booms, oil skimmers, and firefighting equipment to provide enhanced initial containment, and they will be available to all marine traffic in the event of an incident. We will store equipment, such as containment and absorbent booms, skimmers, and waste storage, in multiple well-maintained, readily accessible response bases, providing a wider area of coverage in a shorter amount of time. Barges will also be located throughout the marine channels for additional storage and equipment mobilization. We are committed to having staff, contractors, and partners in place to maintain that enhanced state of readiness. The Gateway project will likely never see a major marine oil spill. But if it does, we’ll be prepared to protect our coastline.

PRINCE RUPERT - The courts of the Russell Gamble Gymnasium will host four days of basketball action starting Nov. 21 as 16 teams compete in the All Native Qualifying Tournament. For the first time in over a decade the team from Hydaburg Alaska, who tied a tournament record with seven consecutive championships from 2001 to 2007, will have to earn their way into the tournament after missing the 2012 tournament and putting an end to a new three-title streak the team was on. Other teams competing include Gitwinksihlkw, Kitamaat, Greenville, Terrace, Gitanyow, Kispiox, Gitsegukla and two teams from Lax Kw’alaams. For the women, the team from Vancouver will receive a first-round bye. Joining them are teams from Bella Coola, Gitwinksihlkw, Hazelton, Ahousaht, Kitkatla and Skidegate. As with the All Native in February, the qualifying tournament is a double-elimination format. The final game of the women’s qualifier will get underway at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 24, with the final game for the seniors beginning at eight p.m.

Raymond Allan Lahti

March 3, 1943 – November 17, 2012 Ray was born Raimo Allan Lahdenpara, March 3, 1943 in Pascalis, Quebec to Finnish parents Vieno Oksanen and Victor Lahdenpera (later changed to Lahti). Ray grew up in northern Quebec mining towns, spending most of his school years in Malardic and Val d’Or. Except for short stays in Montreal and Vancouver, Ray spent most of his work life in Northern BC and Yukon isolated communities managing retail businesses and training managers to replace him. He lived in places like Jedway, Old Crow and Faro. Cassiar, where he was nicknamed ‘PeeWee’, was his favorite town where he made lifelong friends and had a short married life with Charlene Rankin. At forty-nine, Ray made a lifestyle change and chose jobs free of stress. He truly enjoyed his highway flagging jobs, meeting travellers from all over the world. In his last decade Ray discovered a whole new challenge; minding and maintaining ‘Bear Creek’ float camps in isolated north coast settings. Ray loved the north; its vast wilderness, its powerful beauty, its history and its people. He enjoyed paddling its remote rivers and built a wee Finnish style cabin above a moose crossing on the Dease River. Here he spent his summers and wintered in Prince Rupert when he wasn’t travelling! He was an insatiable traveller. There was always another place to explore and interesting people to learn from. In this past year, aware of reoccurred cancer, Ray lived life to its fullest! He spent four months at his beloved cabin; renovating once again, splitting a years’ worth of firewood, tending to his raised bed garden, and reading dozens of books. He also discovered cruising, enjoying no less than four extended cruise trips that covered 17 countries, returning home from the Mediterranean only 20 days before his death in Prince Rupert. Newspapers, the CBC and the Economists accompanied Ray wherever he went even his last journey to the hospital. Ray is survived by: his siblings Laila (Neil); Nancy; Julie (Warren) all of BC; Diane (Pat) of Calgary and; Ralph (Lise) of Malardic; his childhood friend Dennis Kirkwood, and his best friend and partner Shannon Mark and her family. A Celebration of Life followed by the spreading of Ray’s ashes will take place at his cabin on the Dease River in the summer of 2013. Ray was a gentleman and a scholar. He was a kind friend to all. He will be sorely missed. In lieu of flowers please donate to The Senior Centre, Prince Rupert, BC.

By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - The Prince Rupert Rampage traveled into the Bulkley Valley this weekend to face the Houston Luckies and the Smithers Steelheads, and returned to the north coast without a win. On Saturday night the Rampage played the Luckies and opened the scoring on the powerplay as Derek Baker put one past Brock Henrickson just under eight minutes into the first, but Derek Dinelle added a powerplay goal for Houston with six minutes to play to tie things up at one. Less than two minute later though, Justin Fontaine found the back of the net to give Prince Rupert the 2-1 lead through the first 20 minutes. The second period proved to be a very even one, with neither team scoring until Fontaine netted his second of the game with 1:09 left to give Prince Rupert a 3-1 lead heading into the final frame. The third, though, was all Houston. Brett Mitchell pulled the Luckies to within one with 13:53 to play, and Dwayne Meints tied things up with 4:31 left in the game. While it looked like overtime might be needed, Jaden Janzen beat netminder Keano Wilson with 3:55 left to play to put Houston up 4-3, and that was how the game would end. On Sunday the Rampage faced off against the Smithers Steelheads, a team that was undefeated last season and remains undefeated this year. The game was largely controlled by the Steelheads, who shut out the Rampage until Josh Kierce put Rupert on the board with 11:15 to play in the third period. In the end it was a 6-1 Steelheads victory. This weekend the Rampage return home for double header action. On Saturday night the team plays the Williams Lake Stampeders, and on Sunday afternoon the team will face off with the Quesnel Kangaroos. Elsewhere last weekend in the CIHL, Terrace fell 7-2 to first-place Smithers while Kitimat squeaked out a 4-3 win against Houston, thanks to a couple of shorthanded goals. Terrace is hosting two games at home this weekend, the first against Lac La Hache on Saturday night and a Sunday matinee against Williams Lake. Quesnel will be in Kitimat Saturday night, with Lac La Hache taking to Tamitik on Sunday to finish their trip.

Kitimat skates at sectionals By Cameron Orr

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

KITIMAT - Two Snow Valley Skating Club skaters took to sectionals in Parksville earlier this month and said it was a great learning experience to prepare them for more competition next year. Mariah Carvalho and Kendra Brousseau were the only two skaters from Kitimat who fit the conditions for attending the sectionals. They say they’ll take what they learned to improve their performance for next year. “It was a good skate, I think I did okay,” said Kendra.

Head Coach Cynthia Medeiros said that competitions are good for local skaters because locally there just isn’t the opportunity to see higher level skating. The skaters in Parksville, by comparison, are from all over the province and in the top flights of their division. Skating performances are done twice. They start with a short skate where they do three jumps, two spins and some footwork sequences. Then they follow later with a longer performance that is a bit more flexible, said Medeiros. She added that the two girls did better in the short skate than they did in the long one.

Kendra competes at the novice level and Mariah is in the pre-novice category. Competitively this is the end of the season for them. The sections were a qualifier to go to higher levels like nationals but with Kendra in 19th place and Mariah in 52nd they are happy to just come home and make sure they shine even brighter the next time. And it’s certainly not to be considered a loss. Kendra revels in the opportunity to meet people and friends, while Mariah said the highlights for her is just being able to perform in front of a much larger crowd.

Bantam girls look to extend streak in Kamloops Contributed

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

TERRACE - Terrace’s Bantam Female Reps hockey team is heading to Kamloops this weekend to see if they can continue their winning streak. They’ll be playing against some of the top ranked teams in the province, and going up against the number one North Shore Winter Club and the number three ranked Surrey Falcons in their first two games of the weekend. They’re looking for a repeat of the tournament earlier this month when they travelled to Vernon for a weekend tournament and took the top spot. They started the weekend falling to the Richmond Ravens Friday,

Nov. 2 after a hard fought game that saw them down by two within the first 10 minutes. “Our team finally got the bus legs out by the end of the first period with Caitlyn Ray getting our one and only goal in the second period,” said coach Mario Desjardins. Terrace outshot Richmond 2722, but Richmond wouldn’t budge, with the final score being 2-1 for the Ravens. Next, the team faced off against the well-coached Kootenay, winning 2-1 despite being outshot 40-32. “Our goalie, Meghan Pritchett, played her best game for our team at the most important time of the tournament,” said Desjardins, noting that they needed this win to have any chance at the finals. In their final round robin game,

they went up against Kamloops. After a close first 30 minutes with Terrace leading 2-1, Terrace turned up the heat and scored six unanswered goals in the final half and taking Kamloops 8-1 in the end. And thanks to Kootenay beating Richmond in their final matchup, Terrace headed to the finals against the undefeated host, the Vernon Lakers. The final game was close for the first two periods, with Terrace leading 2-1. “But again the girls found an extra gear in their game,” said Desjardins. Terrace scored three unanswered goals, winning 5-1, thanks in part to a hat trick by Marissa Nichol. Strong goaltending by Kelsey Roberts, who turned away 23 shots, also contributed to the

win, he said. The win was a big team effort, he said, with all of the girls pulling their weight and contributing in different ways. But the team has an unusual practice schedule—being that there isn’t one. Desjardins says they don’t practise during the week, but they do play games against some of the teams here in town, like the Peewee Rep team. “We have some of the top Female Bantam players in the province and we play a system that no team has been able to adjust to yet,” he said. This is the team’s second gold medal victory in as many tournaments, and they’re hoping they can make it three this weekend.
