Hundreds bid fond farewell to VSS ROGER KNOX

eople searched for their lockers. For names on the drama department’s legendary Green Room walls. They scooped up old yearbooks, class photos, bid on photos from the years they attended. They bought bricks that the school is famous for, or pieces of the gym floor. One woman even remembered the three numbers of her combination lock from more than 30 years ago. It was a night full of memories, laughter and smiles as several hundred people toured the hallowed halls of Vernon Secondary School one last time during a public open house Thursday evening. “Nostalgia,“ said VSS Class of 1991 grad Lori Shippy on why she attended the open house. “The school’s getting torn down and I’m kind of sad about that. The teachers were great, very helpful. I played sports throughout my five years here, all types of sports.” The old school opened in 1968 as Vernon Senior Secondary, which housed Grades 11 and 12 students until 1984-85, when it expanded to Grades 8 to 12 and became Vernon Secondary School. It gives way in January to a new VSS, being built on the same 18th Street site. Shippy attended Grades 8 through 12 at VSS, and said she made friendships at the school that still exist today. The new building that will open Jan. 7, 2013 has drawn some envy from the former Vernon Panthers athletic standout. “It’s huge, nice and I’m really jealous,“ smiled Shippy. “I hear the gym’s amazing. And it’s got windows.“

That was a very popular topic, particularly among original VSS graduating Class of 1969 members Juliette Bru Cunningham and Judy Inglis Hermanson. “It was difficult getting used to not having windows in the classroom. I think it‘s been proven that was a bad idea,“ said Cunningham, who holds a soft spot for former VSS teacher Anna Cail. “She was an excellent teacher and her classes were pretty inspirational,“ said Cunningham. For the girls in the first graduating class of VSS, they took the protest movements of the 1960s into their own hallways. “We were the first girls not wearing dresses anymore,“ said Hermanson, adding that students “froze to death in winter” at the new high school. “They said we couldn’t come to school in jeans. One day, we all showed up in jeans. That was the turnaround.“ While current staff members manned

tables that were selling souvenir bricks, pieces of the gym floor, T-shirts, yearbook and photo sales, plus silent auction items, former staff toured the old hallways. Those included John Baumbrough, one of the most popular teachers in VSS history who was part of the first faculty in 1968. “The first year was a bit difficult, everybody was getting used to it and we did our best to break the school,” said Baumbrough, whose five kids are all VSS alumni. Among those purchasing souvenir bricks was Class of 1976 alumna Helen Schnyder, who flew in from Whitehorse Thursday to visit her parents, who still live in Vernon, but also to attend the open house. “It was amazing,” said Schnyder, who met her future husband, Craig Smith, in Grade 8 at Fulton Junior Secondary. “It brought back all sorts of memories and it was great to be here with my old high school friends.” Also wandering down the four levels of hallways in the main building was Vernon School District board chair Bill Turanski,

who had three of his four kids graduate from VSS. “The turnout tonight is incredible,“ said Turanski. “I expected quite a number of people but I’m overwhelmed by what I’m seeing.“ Current VSS students were also helping out. Demetre Kontos (Class of 2015) and Keiryn Young (Class of ‘16) were selling burgers and hot dogs. Both were impressed by the turnout. “I wasn’t sure people would hear about it but it makes sense they’d want to come one last time,” said Kontos. Young is looking forward to moving into the new facility in January. “I’m excited for the windows,” she laughed. “It won’t feel like a prison anymore.” Funds raised from the sale of items, and from a barbecue held in the school cafeteria, will go to the VSS Scholarship Fund and athletic department. An open house at the new VSS will likely be held in the spring.

The wife of the accused was the first witness for the defence in the Vernon Supreme Court trial of a Coldstream man accused of striking and killing a pedestrian with his car. Marcia Donaldson told defence lawyer Paul Danyliu that on the evening of April 30, 2010, she and her husband, Chase Garett Donaldson, had been to a 60th anniversary celebration for her grandparents, and that she had left the party at 7:30 p.m. “Chase and my brother (Nick Hlina) stayed behind to help clean up chairs and tables,” said Marcia. Chase Donaldson has pleaded not guilty to one count of criminal negligence causing death and one count of failing to stop at an accident causing bodily harm in connection with the death on April 30, 2010 of Kiera-Leigh Carlson, 22, who was struck by a vehicle on Aberdeen Road as

she was walking to Vernon to work. Marcia Donaldson told the court that her husband came home with her brother, came inside and got the keys to the family’s 2006 Subaru Impreza – the Donaldsons also had a company pick-up vehicle – before heading out again, and that he left the house “at close to 8:30 p.m.” “Chase came back a half-hour later,” said Marcia. “I could tell something had happened because Chase was upset and a little shocked. “He said ‘I hit something, I’m not sure what I hit.’” Marcia said she again asked her husband what had happened. He replied he had been driving down Aberdeen Road toward the stoplight at Highway 6, and that “when he was coming to the corner before the light, he checked his rear view mirror.” “When he looked ahead again, he saw headlights coming toward him and swerved to avoid them,” said Marcia,

fighting back tears. “He felt a bump and said he slammed on the brakes, did a U-turn and pulled over behind a car on the side of the road.” Under cross examination, Crown lawyer Iain Currie asked Marcia Donaldson why she didn’t tell police in her statement about her husband checking his rear view mirror. “I tried to be helpful to the police,” she said. “I’d suggest looking into his rear view mirror then seeing a car coming at him is a pretty significant fact the police ought to know,” said Currie. “Yes,” answered Marcia. Marcia Donaldson testified she went outside to examine the damage to the Subaru and “saw the driver’s side headlight broken, the panel on the driver’s front side was indented, the mirror was gone and there was a dent on the roof.”

Staff may get a better sense of the process that is scrutinizing how the City of Vernon operates. Council will receive an update on the core review from consulting firm KPMG Monday. “This will be the first information session we will have had on the review,” said Mayor Rob Sawatzky. “They will provide timelines and what they have done so far.” Council approved an $80,000 contract in September for KPMG to look at internal operations. According to a document being presented Monday, the objective of the review is to “identify cost savings opportunities and find innovative and sustainable approaches.” Among the issues for the review to consider are making sure the services delivered are of the highest value, removing lower value services and directing limited resources to the delivery of communityvalued programs. As part of the process, there will be a workshop with the city’s senior management team Nov. 27. That will be followed by a project update to council Jan. 28 and a public workshop Jan. 30. The final report will be presented to council March 31. “There’s lots of work to do yet. It’s a large process to review an organization,” said Sawatzky. Sawatzky admits there may be some concern among city staff about the final outcome of the review and where it may lead to layoffs. “Because of the experiences like Penticton (downsizing occurred there), we are aware that staff has some anxiety,” he said. “That’s not conducive to performance so we want to get the process done.” Sawatzky insists that there hasn’t been a predetermination that programs or staffing levels will be cut. “We can’t make any predictions because we haven’t seen the recommendations (for the review),” he said.

of the Highway 97A business Monday at about 3 a.m. It’s still not known if the building can be restored or if a new structure is required. “Our economic development board is looking at options,” said Christian. The station is also home to the Quilakwa Art Gallery. The Enderby Fire Department, the RCMP and the fire commissioner’s office are still trying to determine how the fire started. “We have a pretty good idea of what the cause is,” said Kevin Alstad, fire chief. The fire is not considered suspicious and the RCMP is involved because fires on First Nations land fall under its jurisdiction. It’s been determined that the fire began in an electrical room. About $500,000 in damages was done. “Everything in the store is a total write-off from smoke and water damage,” said Alstad. Damage was also done to the roof and some walls. “I’m not sure if the building is salvageable. They may have to get a structural engineer in,” said Alstad.

Measures are being taken to ease congestion on a popular bus route. The Regional District of North Okanagan is proposing to add two daily runs between Vernon and Kelowna when the University of B.C. is in session from fall to spring. The goal is to try and accommodate more students, many of whom are left standing on the side of the road because the two buses are full. “It’s clear that there’s a need,” said chairperson Patrick Nicol. The number of trips per day would go from eight to 10. To ensure there are the Patrick Nicol funds to add the two runs, about four runs will be cut during the summer when the university is not operating. Initiating the new schedule will depend on approval from B.C. Transit. If the plan proceeds, the trip changes will be reviewed in May. “How did that work? Is there still a demand for a third bus?” said David Sewell, general manager of finance. While some residents have demanded a third bus, RDNO officials have stated that other options for improving service should be considered first. “It’s a gradual way to do it. The costs of the service are increasing,” said Nicol. The local contribution to operate each bus is about $120,000 per year, with B.C. Transit providing a similar amount. Besides students, the other focus for the Kelowna route is residents accessing doctors’ appointments, work or shopping. “There is the potential for the general public to use the bus as a connector,” said director Juliette Cunningham. RDNO is currently going through a legislative process to establish a transit service to UBC. Virtually all RDNO members fund one bus to UBC. But when a second bus began in 2010, only Vernon picked up that cost. RDNO members have now agreed to fund the second bus and that requires the creation of a funding service. If 10 per cent of electors sign an alternate approval petition opposing the service by Monday, the function cannot proceed.

The Morning Star advertising rep has sported a moustache since 1973, so anyone who knows him has likely never seen him without one. “I’ve just trimmed it, that’s all I’ve ever done,” said Rasmussen, of the thick cookie duster he’s been growing since he was just 23-years-old. So when Movember rolled around, a few of Rasmussen’s co-workers convinced him to shave his moustache off. They coined it the reverse Movember – as most men grow out moustaches for the month of November in support of prostate cancer awareness. “I said if we’re going to do it we’re not just going to shave it off, we’re going to raise some money,” said Rasmussen. So the bounty was set. A $2,000 goal was set to free Rasmussen’s lip. Posters were drawn up, sent to clients and advertised in the newspaper, and the result has generated $1,600 towards prostate cancer research so far. “I feel really good about doing it,” said Rasmussen, of supporting what he calls the men’s equivalent

A federal Liberal leadership hopeful believes the party must be relevant to Canadians if it’s to rebuild. Jonathan Mousley says he is noticing a sense of optimism among Liberal members but they can’t be complacent that voters will naturally flock back to them once they are tired of the Conservative government. “We need to connect to the day-to-day concerns of Canadians,” said

Mousley, who stopped in Vernon Saturday. The Liberals, who formed government for years, placed third behind the Conservatives and the NDP in last year’s election. “We have to earn every vote. We have to

give people a reason to vote for us and not a reason to vote for someone else,” said Mousley. Among the issues he is focused on is youth employment. Mousley says there is a need to focus on vocational training and apprenticeship pro-

grams. “We need to expand co-op programs across all colleges and universities.” Mousley also wants a focus on improving infrastructure in communities. “People sitting in traffic for hours is a national competitive issue and not just a local infrastructure issue,” he said. Mousley is a senior economist with the Ontario’s Ministry of Finance and he pursued the Liberal nomination in the Toronto riding of

Don Valley West in 2008. He admits that one of the challenges in his current leadership bid is making people aware of who he is. “That’s starting to change as more and more people meet me and I am getting some national exposure now,” he said. “I am talking about my vision for the party and for Canada. Accident trial resumes Monday Continued From A3 She also testified that she and her husband went out at separate times back to the scene the night of the accident, but both “saw nothing.” Chase Donaldson went out the next morning, around 7 or 7:15 a.m. to survey the scene, but returned home five or 10 minutes later. “He said the scene was surrounded by cops and that it looked like a crime scene,” said Marcia. A missed call number on Chase’s cell phone Friday night turned out to be a police operator returning a call after Chase accidentally dialed 911, and the Donaldsons reported that Chase had hit “something.” The next day, the Donaldsons called the same number, spoke to three different people and Marcia said she was told “Chase must be the guy that hit the girl.” “Police came over and arrested him,” said Marcia. Crown wrapped up its case Friday morning with Hlina being the final witness. Hlina told Crown of a phone conversation he had with Chase Donaldson after the accident. “He said ‘Dude, I think I hit something,’ I can’t remember much more than that,” said Hlina. “I think I said I believed he hit the black car (coming off of Highway 6).” Asked Donaldson’s

Raining on my parade

ou know what they say about the best laid plans, but then again it was supposed to be a no-brainer and I was even sort of prepared. I mean the 100th anniversary of the Grey Cup, as Canadian an event with a rich tradition as you can get, and very worthy of maybe even throwing a party, if you can get the house clean in time and actually get your act together. And I already knew all the words to the B.C. Lions fight song – Come on and roar you Lions roar etc. etc. – to impress the three or four couples we would invite, and a good time would be had by all, especially if B.C. Glenn Mitchell could successfully defend their title. Except. Well. Ahem. I think you probably know what happened. You see first the Lions had to beat the Calgary Stampeders in the Western final but that was supposed to be a sure thing, even though the Stamps were the hottest team in the second half and there are no sure things in sports, and especially in the CFL. Heavy sigh. I could go into a rant about the B.C. defence, well offence too, but, hey, I’m over it. Sort of. Not enough to host a party though. I don’t know the Argo or Stamp fight song and I don’t own a horse, or a ship for that matter. But it’s still an historic anniversary for the Grey Cup. And it’s still a tradition worth celebrating and it might even be a good game, as it usually is, so I’ll watch it. And I’ll try not to be bitter. But go Argos go.......... .........and speaking of depressing, this rain lately is starting to get to me. It’s dark, it’s wet, it’s the kind of cold that goes right through you, and I’m starting to think we

live in Prince Rupert. It’s also not white, or snow, or cheery or Christmassy at all. However, the forecast is for flurries today so I’m semi optimistic they may know what they’re talking about and things will improve and skiers can soon strap the boards on and get on with the season. I know some people, like the ones at the Coast, will say “at least you don’t have to shovel it” to all the rain we’re having, but that’s just what Coastal people say to justify living where they do and well, not here, where we enjoy snow, for the most part. I don’t even mind shovelling it as it’s one of the few ways I get exercise and it’s at least bright and not dreary like the weather of the last few weeks....... .......went to the VSS open house and so-long ceremony Thursday night and it was anything but depressing. Well done to all the staff and students that helped host the hundreds of grads and former staff and friends who came to take a look and relive old memories. Well, I guess the brick and concrete and lack of windows and, I swear, the same lockers that I used in 1978, were a tad on the depressing side and helped tell the story of why the new school is needed, but still it was all good. I saw enough fellow grads and former teachers and friends and family to make it a feel-good community event, and from the lip dub to the food to the silent auction with all the cool memorabilia, it was the perfect mix of organized but casual. I only spent two years at what was then VSSS, the only senior high school in town, so it went by in a hurry, and it was a few years ago, ahem, but it’s surprising what floods back when you walk the halls. And most of it good. I only wish they’d done the same thing at the old Fulton in Polson Park before they tore it down, as I spent three good years there. Oh well, thanks again for a great night and good luck with the move. Now, about that rain.

It’s may not be the answer many residents want, but it’s the responsible one. There has been significant pressure on the Regional District of North Okanagan to put a third bus on the road between Vernon and Kelowna. And obviously there is a problem as many University of B.C. students are unable to get to classes because the existing vehicles are beyond capacity. It is a situation that clearly needs addressing. However, there has to be an understanding that public transportation comes at a cost. Presently, local taxpayers are pumping about $120,000 per year into each of the existing buses. On top of that, B.C. Transit, a provincial agency, provides a similar amount. And the budget escalates annually because of salaries, maintenance and rising fuel costs. Public transit is vital if we are to reduce greenhouse gases by getting vehicles off the road. Fewer vehicles also eases demands to maintain roads. However, the recession has placed significant restrictions on individuals and their ability to pay taxes. How much of a subsidy are taxpayers to provide for students wanting to get to school or people heading to Kelowna to shop or see their doctor? So instead of simply agreeing to a third bus, RDNO directors have made a logical decision. Two runs daily will be added between Vernon and Kelowna while UBC classes are in session from fall to spring. Four runs will be cut during the summer. The plan is budget-neutral but what it may do is provide more space for students and others to climb aboard the bus. Instead of making a radical, costly move, RDNO is demonstrating that it’s aware of community needs, including those paying the bill.

Reforms required soon

ince at least the 1930s, we in the west have demanded and received (so we perceive) ever greater benefits and subsidies from our governments. Simultaneously, we have acceded to ever more and higher taxes, public indebtedness that would make the fathers of Confederation laugh out loud in disbelief, and the outright creation of money from thin air, with nothing to back it up. We hear everywhere now of the fiscal cliff facing the U.S., caused by the factors listed above, a point of no return that can only be averted, some say, by raising taxes and increasing so-called stimulus spending by government. If that sounds to you like dousing a campfire with kerosene, you're quite right. But if you think it is only the States that stands on the edge of this cliff, you are mistaken. If anything, they are one of the least serious offenders. Social democracies like the U.K., France, Belgium, and yes, Canada, are in even worse shape. We are all staring into the abyss, and serious reform is needed now. The public sector, as it now

stands, is unsustainable. Change will come, like it or not. Our only choice is whether we realize the need and make the reforms in an orderly fashion, or simply cobble together the scraps and pieces left after a collapse. The responsibility of federal governments will primarily be monetary. They must stabilize the money supply, let interest rates find their natural levels, and begin the move toward asset-backed hard currency. This will automatically enforce fiscal discipline on all three levels of government, as they will no longer be able to rely on the printing presses to finance their vanity projects. This will require the reform of the public sector, and the sooner the better to avoid undue disrup-

bx ranch park As identified in the 2004 Greater Vernon parks and recreation master plan, Vernon suffers from a chronic shortage of parkland within the city. The master plan recommended the acquisition of, “40 hectares for a new destination park in the North Vernon area to meet the current deficiency and future needs," by the year 2014. Fortunately, a historic opportunity has arisen recently to establish just such a park immediately adjacent to the city boundary, within walking distance of East Hill. The last 166 acres of the BX Ranch is for sale, and the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee should capitalize on this rare opportunity by purchasing these lands and adding them to the current 27-acre BX Ranch Park. Otherwise, this land likely will simply continue to be subdivided into five and 10-acre properties for the wealthy few, and the opportunity to establish such a beautiful park for current and future needs will be lost forever. That would be a shame. An expanded BX Ranch Park has the potential

Hopefully, GVAC can resolve its governance issues in time to capitalize on this historic, fleeting opportunity. Corporate welfare, including the funding of myriad non-governmental organizations, must be eliminated. Debt must be taken on solely for the financing of the infrastructure upgrades (ie. freeways) we so desperately need. And taxes and regulation must be reduced as much as possible, to create an environment wherein all (legal) enterprises of whatever type or size have an equal chance of succeeding on their own merits. If we institute these and other reforms soon, we can avert fiscal meltdown and preserve the essential services and order to which we have become accustomed. If we do not, we can watch our own future being played out in the streets of Athens and in the dozens of major U.S. cities that are laying off their police forces and firefighters before declaring bankruptcy. Further investigation of the job numbers show that B.C. actually is fifth or sixth in job creation over the last year. Clearly, the B.C. Liberals are not up to the challenges that face B.C. today. The issue that was being addressed in the article was the increase in food bank usage and with this type of continued misinformation and spin from the B.C. Liberals, it appears they have lost their focus. Life continues to be less affordable today for the people of B.C. We continue to have the worst overall poverty rate in the country and the worst child poverty rate in Canada for eight years in a row. We need a clear plan that offers change for the better. must work towards: moving people from poverty to possibility, healthy people in strong communities and helping kids be all that they can be. The Family Place program at Enderby and District Community Resource Centre works in these focus areas. For the past fourand-a-half years, Angela Casey has been coming to Family Place with her kids.

“Some of the moms and I put our heads together to come up with why we like coming to Enderby Family Place,” said Casey. “We came up with a long list of reasons; anything from the kids getting together and learning to share and play; to visiting and having coffee with other moms where we can relax and not think about the dishes, laundry and making meals. The kids enjoy crafts, colouring, songs, stories, snacks and playdough. There

The board will write a letter of support for the Grindrod Recreation Association, which is applying to the provincial government for a grant for the new community hall, which is under construction. “They’ve done a phenomenal job,” said chairperson Patrick Nicol of the association. However, executive director Lesley Dieno says the agency still circulates three million print items a year. “Lots of people, and especially teens, want print,” she said. “They (teens) read computers and phones all day long and when they are ready for pleasure, they want print.” There is also a growing demand within print materials for books with large type and languages other than English. But many ORL patrons are embracing the latest in technology. “So far this year, 83,000 ebooks have been downloaded,” said Dieno. Other services are also proving popular. The number of downloads of music from the Freegal database is up 80 per cent and the collection of magazines from Zinio is being used at a high rate. “But we are still circulating CDs. That hasn’t declined,” said Dieno. With increasing demands for reading material and music in various forms, financial pressures are being placed on ORL. “We’re just adding things on, we’re not getting rid of anything,” said Dieno. “Libraries have to provide something of everything.”

Lumber of Westbank has completed its purchase of the Federated Co-operatives forest products operation in Canoe, comes little or no change. “The purchase agreement provides that all employees will be offered employment by Gorman Bros. Lumber on substantially the same terms and conditions as their present employment,” states the news release announcing the acquisition. The sale includes Federated’s plywood plant, sawmill and log harvesting and forestry operations within the Okanagan Timber Supply Area surrounding Shuswap Lake. Although rumours have circulated that the planer might re-open, Rick Scott, Gorman Bros.’ chief financial officer, says no. “We’re not planning on expanding the operation. The planer will not be operated. Possibly the kilns will be used, but they only take one or two people.”

A Lumby man has been recognized for his effort in rescuing motorists in a fiery crash. Mayor Kevin Acton presented Paul McMann with a certificate of commendation on behalf of Gov.-Gen. David Johnston during Monday’s council meeting. “It’s really quite something. I never expected anything to come of it,” said McMann. McMann and his son Stephen were travelling on Highway 97, between Vernon and Oyama, July 29, 2009 when they witnessed a motor vehicle accident. “We were right behind the one guy and we got out to see if we could help,” said McMann. Both vehicles had caught fire and the McManns and others were able to pull the drivers out of the vehicles. McMann says he was never concerned about being at risk. “We had to do what we could to help,” he said.

The Ministry of Education is providing funds to the North Okanagan-Shuswap and Vernon school districts for new buses. “In smaller and far-flung communities, it can be a challenge to get kids to school on time. More new school buses will help,” said George Abbott, Shuswap MLA. The North Okanagan-Shuswap district will receive $631,899 for six new school buses while the Vernon district will get $526,582 for five vehicles. “For a lot of students, the school day starts and ends with a bus ride,” said Eric Foster, VernonMonashee MLA. “Hopefully, these new, cleaner buses mean a nicer ride, and a better school day.”

Veteran presence boosts Vipers Morning Star Staff

The injection of three 19-year-olds into the lineup did wonders for the Vernon Vipers in B.C. Hockey League action Friday night at the South Okanagan Events Centre. Colton Sparrow and Brendan Persley, both returning from injury, and Liam Board, making his Viper debut after being acquired from the Prince George Spruce Kings a day earlier, all factored in Vernon’s 2-1 win over the host Penticton Vees. From their own end, Sparrow and d-man Brett Corkey set up a streaking Aaron Hadley with a cross-ice clearance for the game’s opening goal eight minutes into the second period. Vees’ netminder Brendan Persley Chad Katunar came out to play the puck, but got caught in no-man’s land, leaving Hadley an open net for his eighth of the season. Persley, working on a line with Board and Michael Roberts, drove to the net four minutes into the third period, with the puck squirting out to Ryan Renz (2nd goal), who buried the top-shelf winner through a swarm of bodies in front of Katunar. It was Persley’s first game back after missing the last 10 with a surgically repaired broken leg. It was Vernon’s first win against Penticton (16-7-0-2) in three attempts, improving the Vipers to fourth in the Interior at 9-9-0-6. The Snakes entertained the Vees Saturday night at Wesbild Centre. In other BCHL action Friday night, Adam Clark recorded 28 saves for the shutout as the Salmon Arm SilverBacks blanked the host Trail Smoke Eaters 4-0 at Cominco Arena. Vernon’s Alex Gillies led the SilverBacks with a goal and assist. Both Gillies and Jeff Kennedy, counting the opening goal, scored with the man advantage. Anthony Croston converted shorthanded and Steven Iacobellis rounded out the offence. Armstrong’s Dylan Chanter scored once and Derek Huisman collected 2+1 as the Merritt Centennials upended the leagueleading Chilliwack Chiefs 5-3 at Nicola Valley Arena. The Sun Valley Source for Sports Renegades struck six times in the final period to outgun the visiting Salmon Arm SilverBacks 10-5 in Bantam Tier 1 hockey league action Friday night. Tied 4-4 after 40 minutes, the Renegades used singles from Jagger Williamson, Nick Higgs, Eammon Miller, Kaden Black, Bryce Pyle and Donte Nowell to put the game away. The ‘Backs opened the scoring on a turnover in the first period, but the determined Renegades answered with a two-man advantage goal by Harvey Pawsey, the first of four powerplay markers by Vernon on the night. Williamson then scored back-to-back goals, assists to Gage Kopp and Black. Nowell, from Nick Higgs, made it 4-2 before Salmon Arm equalized with two goals in two

minutes before the end of the second period. Adding assists were Williamson (2), Higgs, Miller, Nowell, Matt Kowalski, Michael Lenoury and Pyle. Said Renegades’ head coach Jim Armstrong: “Our team drove hard to the net and put themselves in position to score tonight, and it paid off.” Meanwhile, the Vernon Auto Fix Vikings opened up Salmon Arm Bantam Tier 3 Tournament with a tough 2-1 loss to South Okanagan Friday. Vernon was led by some strong goaltending from Ethan Huizinga and by the non-stop hustle from MVP Austin Caldwell. South Okanagan started the scoring with five minutes to go in the first period against the flow of play. The Vikings equalized on a deflection off a Carl Main shot near the end of the second period.

The Vernon Panthers came one play short in their bid to become the first Interior team to ever qualify for the B.C. Junior Varsity football championship, losing 21-16 to the host Abbotsford Panthers Wednesday at rain-soaked Moaut Field. Down five with five minutes remaining, the Panthers faced a fourth-and-five from the Abby 20-yard line. QB John Garvie (7-of-15 for 58 yds, 1 TD) threw to the end zone to a streaking Zac Kronbauer (5 receptions for 85 yds, 1 TD), but the pass was well defended and knocked to the ground. Abbotsford finished 1-7 last season with a roster predominantly comprised of Grade 9 athletes. They meet the Mission Roadunners next Saturday at B.C. Place for the provincial title. “To play where the B.C. Lions play, it’s unbelievable,” marveled Abby quarterback Grayson Marquardt, who rushed for all three Panthers’ touchdowns. “I’m kind of at a loss for words. But we’re ready for it, I think.” Abby coach Rick Funk said earning a B.C. berth was a just reward after taking their lumps last year. “They got beat up physically, they got beat up on the scoreboard, and they never gave up hope for one minute,” Funk enthused. “All their bruises became badges, and this year it’s paid off.” Abbotsford took over the ball and ran for three straight first downs to take the clock down to 30 seconds before VSS could stop them. With no time outs remaining, Vernon failed to move the ball. “I am more proud of our boys after this loss than I was following our quarterfinal win last week,” said

VSS coach Sean Smith. “We took a lot of punches from a very tough, physical, top-ranked team and gave ourselves a chance to win it at the end.” Abby opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 60-yard quarterback run. Vernon responded with the only score of the second quarter on a 15-yard strike from Garvie to Kronbauer. After a two-point conversion by Levi Nicholas, VSS took an 8-7 advantage into the half. Abby came out strong in the third quarter, scoring on their first two possessions to take a 21-8 lead. “We were depleted on defence as we had to leave two defensive starters at home due to illness, and had three more go down in the game,” said Smith. “It took our replacements a while to get acclimated to the speed of the game. Once we made the necessary adjustments, the boys settled down and shut them down for the rest of the half.” Levi Nicholas and Justin Haverkamp led the Panthers with 12 tackles apiece. To end the third quarter, Nicholas took a four-yard toss to the end zone and Kyle Ryder caught the two-point convert. “This one is going to sting for a while, but the consolation is that we know we can compete with the top teams in the province. If this group continues to dedicate themselves to getting better, I am confident they will have another shot at a championship before they graduate. “I’d like to thank my assistant coaches (Jeff Collins, Tim Thorpe and Dave Tetrault) for their commitment to Panther football. Chris McEachran-Law of Vernon finished in a three-way tie for eighth in the Maple Leaf/Boston Pizza National Junior Golf Tour championship last weekend in Phoenix. McEachran-Law, 18, carded 76-71-147 at the Legacy Golf Resort. There was a field of 31 in the boys 17-19 age group. Keaton Jones of Kitchener won the division at 71-69-140, edging Derek Roach of Calgary, Jared du Toit of Kimberley and Jason Fritz of Lethbridge by one stroke. Several college scouts watched the 72 players from three age categories. Highlighting the weekend was keynote speaker Tim Mickelson, head golf coach at Arizona State, and younger brother of PGA star Phil Mickelson.

An anemic powerplay doesn’t seem to be hampering the North Okanagan Knights all that much. Firing at just 9.38 per cent, secondworst in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, the Knights whiffed on eight powerplay attempts Friday night and still earned a 3-1 win over the Princeton Posse at Nor-Val Sports Centre. “We had numerous chances on the powerplay and we couldn’t get out of our zone,” said head coach Kris Mallette. “Our reaction time was late, and that’s what was frustrating for me. Our guys were waiting for things to happen rather than making it happen.” Logan Mostat, a 15-year-old call-up from Salmon Arm’s Midget Tier 1 squad, scored on his fifth KIJHL shift for the 17-7-0-1 Knights, burying a post-and-in shot on a 2-on-1 with Tyler Bolduc. “The kid plays with jam,” said Mallette, of Mostat. “He’s not a big kid, but he’s not afraid to stick ya. “Even in camp he was a greasy little kid; he’s a disturber.” Derek Andrews (7th goal) beat Phoenix Logan-Hill (23 saves) with a shot from the slot late in the second period for the 2-0 goal. Tanner Burns (16th), assisted by Colton Thibault after a textbook breakout, put North Okanagan up by three goals early in the final period. A Dryden Profeit brain cramp set up Kurtis Klinger for the 14-8-0-1 Posse’s lone goal, ending Austin Buzzell’s shutout bid. Buzzel had 31 saves. North Okanagan’s matinee today against the Sicamous Eagles has been postponed due to a scheduling conflict.

VSS seeks sports shrine

SS Panther athletic director Sean Smith recently checked out the Husky Fever Hall of Fame in Seattle. The 5,000-square foot display room is located on the west end of Bank of America Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion and pays homage to Washington’s rich athletic history and traditions. For the record, the Huskies went 11–11 in Warren Moon’s first two seasons as a starter; but during his senior year, Moon led the Don James coached Huskies to a 27-20 win over the favored Michigan Wolverines in the 1978 Rose Bowl and was named the Kevin Mitchell game’s MVP on the strength of two short TD runs and a third quarter 28-yard touchdown pass to Robert (Spider) Gaines. Moon, a two-time Grey Cup MVP, is naturally featured prominently in the Husky Fever Hall of Fame room which includes displays featuring all 23 of Washington’s current athletic programs, retired varsity sports, and a room for the school’s athletic Hall of Fame inductees. “They’ve got Warren Moon’s stained jersey in their,” laughed Smith. “It’s an amazing place.” A $1 million naming gift funded the Hall of Fame by Husky Fever, a support organization for Washington’s department of intercollegiate athletics. Formed in 1977, it includes retailers, manufacturers and brokers from the food industry. The total project cost for the Husky Fever Hall of Fame was $1.8 million. Now, the shrine Smith envisions for the new Vernon Secondary School gym area won’t be nearly as elaborate as UW, but it will serve as a nice

historic venue for a school which opened in 1968. “We’d like to get a jersey from J.D. Jackson (hoops), a putter from Chris Baryla and a boot from (pro cowboy) Ty Elliott,” said Smith. “These accomplishments need to live on in our new school.” Smith and the rest of the jocks at VSS have secured the old gym floor to jumpstart fundraising for the shrine. “Our plan is to frame one piece of the floor to represent each of the 43 years of athletes that have contributed to the history of the Vernon Panthers,” said Smith, who runs the football program. “The 43 pieces will be transferred to the new school and individually displayed for future Panthers to see.” Each piece will have the year and list of athletes from that year. Alumni are asked to donate at least $25. They will receive a keepsake while also having their name displayed in the shrine. “We want to get as many athletes’ names as we can,” said Smith, a Fulton grad. “Shelley Budgen has already stepped up to be the rep for her year. We’d like to get at least $100 from each year. Leaders for each year will send out our message to other athletes in their year and encourage them to participate. Our goal is to have all 43 years represented in the new school.” Former VSSS (Vernon Senior Secondary School) Panther basketball shooting guard Morris Vardabasso is the current school principal and has give his full blessing to the shrine. All money from floor sales will go directly to Panther athletics. New equipment, badly needed, will be purchased. The rest will support the shrine. Donations will of course be accepted and former athletes are urged to check out the Facebook page entitled LEGACY OF PANTHER ATHLETICS.

Okanagan College’s Kelowna campus is offering a new sevenweek bar, wine and service industry training program beginning Jan. 7. “Tourism and hospitality is the largest primary resource industry in B.C.,” said Lorrie Forde, program administrator. “GO2, the B.C. tourism industry’s human resource association, has forecast the tourism industry as a leader in provincial job growth. With such a large portion of the wine industry concentrated in the Okanagan Valley, Okanagan College can help enhance the communities it surrounds by providing trained employees for its premiere businesses.” There are no academic admission requirements for this program, however students must be 19 years of age or older at time of admission. This program will accept 12 students and will be seven weeks long. three times each week on Vernon’s radio station CJIB with the broadcast “Echoes of Blessing.” In the course of his 40 plus years of ministry in Alberta and British Columbia, Goldsmith visited scores of people in hospitals and care homes. Besides giving counsel and sympathy, he always tried to brighten his visits with a little humour. His eyes were always open for jokes and humorous stories. He gathered quite a collection. After he retired in 2000 and living in Abbotsford, he still did a lot of visitation and came to the realization he had never encountered a book containing the kind of jokes and stories he used. Why not collate all the material he had, search out new stuff and publish just such a book? The result: Jokes Quotes & Anecdotes — Made Especially for Citizens with Seniority. Not able to find a publisher who would print his book, he had a local office supply company run off 50 copies. His brother David, who was the recipient

With the majority of accidental deaths among seniors aged 75 and older resulting from falls, fall prevention has become an increasingly important issue in Kelowna. Nurse Next Door, a leading provider of home care in Vernon, is giving back to the community it serves through its annual Fall Prevention Week Nov. 26 to 30 by offering free home safety inspections to local seniors. In 2010, the direct medical cost of senior falls in North America was $30 billion. One in three people over 65 fall each year and 85 per cent of injury-related hospital admissions in seniors are the result of falls. Also notable is that 90 per cent of hip fractures are the result of falls and 20 per cent of seniors who suffer a hip fracture from a fall die within one year. The most striking fact is that the majority of senior falls are actually preventable. Nurse Next Door’s Fall Prevention Program sends staff trained in fall preven-

tion into local homes to conduct free home safety assessments for seniors with the aim to educate and help families make their homes safer for seniors. “We are making the lives of local seniors safer by checking their homes for common fall hazards,” said Mechal Corbett, BSN, owner of Nurse Next Door in Vernon. “Our goal is to offer this free program to 100 seniors in our community and ensure that none of these individuals end up in the hospital this winter due to a preventable fall.” Common causes for falls include: area or scatter rugs; improper footwear; lack of grab bars or hand rails; poor lighting; pet toys, dishes, and other animal related items; lack of rubber mats in bath tubs “Our home safety assessment allows us to show seniors how to make their homes safer by minimizing risks,” said Corbett. “We’re urging seniors and their families to call us early to book their free fall safety assessment.” Nurse Next Door’s local Fall Prevention Week is part of a national program that will be running in communities across Canada and the United States. The program, now in its eighth year, has already reached hundreds of seniors across the country. There is something that is a regular occurrence at Camp Winfield, one of three Easter Seals camps for disabled children run by the B.C. Lions Society for Children with Disabilities. As parents drop their kid off at Camp Winfield the children dissolve into tears, not wanting to let go of the warmth and security of the parental unit. A week later, after the child has spent time with camp counsellors and friends, has taken part in activities and bonded with peers, the parents come back and so do the tears, as the child doesn’t want to leave Camp Winfield. Such is the way things go at Camp Winfield, where up to 35 camp counsellors and a multitude of volunteers host hundreds of children each summer in a variety of week-long camps. “Having a disabled child takes 24-7 care,” explained Rick Harker, manager of Easter Seals Camp Winfield. “Quite often it’s mom and dad who have to sleep with one eye open. When the child comes to camp they get one week of respite. It’s a good break for the parents and the child gets away from TV, gets away from routine and from all the activities they are forced to do.” While at Camp Winfield, children are pushed to explore new boundaries all the while with camp counsellors close at hand. Usually there is one counsellor for every two children as they take part in activities like canoeing, rock climbing, swimming and arts and crafts. But recently, Camp Winfield did things a little differently. For the first time ever, parents and siblings of the disabled children were invited to take part in Camp Winfield, spending the weekend with their family at the camp and experiencing the things that take place togeth-

“What happens is a lot of the children that we host have siblings that aren’t disabled,” he said. “They come with their brother or sister to

Most importantly, families of disabled children were able to get an idea about the camp and its benefits for their kids. “Now siblings and families can witness and see what their brothers and sisters are doing,” said Harker. “It’s a very positive thing.” Camp Winfield is one of three Easter Seals camps in B.C. with the others locat-

ed in Squamish and Shawnigan Lake on Vancouver Island.

Parking Advisory Committee Request to Fill One (1) Vacancy The Council of the Corporation of the City of Vernon is seeking to fill one (1) position on the newly created Parking Advisory Committee representing the Community at Large. Under Section 3.04 of the Parking Advisory Committee’s Terms of Reference, “members must be residents of Vernon and unaffiliated with the groups requested on the Committee”. The Committee is comprised of a total of seven voting members, representing the general public: one (1) representative from the Chamber of Commerce, two (2) representatives from the Downtown Vernon Association, and two (2) members from the community at large with at least one (1) member being a representative for persons with disabilities. The appointment is for a two (2) year term. Members shall be selected on the basis of their demonstrated interest on matters related to parking in the City Centre Development District in the context of the City Centre Neighbourhood Parking Implementation Strategy. ust recently, the Research Universities Council of B.C. (RUBC) released its submission to the provincial government on the goals and direction they think the government should pursue in providing funding for post-secondary education. The research council consists of the six research universities which are UBC, SFU, UVic, UNBC, Royal Roads and Thompson Rivers University. As a group their mandate is to identify higher education issues and lobby government. Their latest report which is titled “Opportunity Agenda for British Columbia” identiJane Muskens fied a plan for the future of post-secondary education based on three pillars. The first of these pillars is that there should be a space for every qualified student in B.C. In other words the government should fund colleges and universities so every qualified applicant is offered a seat. No students would be turned away because a program or class is full. According to the report we can’t afford to turn

students away because our labour market demands an educated work force. According to B.C. labour market projections 78 per cent of jobs will require some form of post secondary education. With that in mind, the council is proposing that the government fund 11,000 new student seats over the next four years. This means the council is asking the government to commit $130 million so colleges and universities can add more classes and offer more programming. They are requesting funding for 3,600 seats for degree programs, 3,000 seats for graduate programs, and 4,400 seats for colleges and trades. The second pillar is a guarantee for students in need. This pillar looks at the current B.C. student aid program and suggests a number of improvements. Compared to some provinces, such as Alberta and Ontario, B.C. doesn’t have a grant system. Students apply for a student loan and if they graduate they then can apply for a loan reduction. This type of loan system with no upfront grants may lead some students to study outside of the province or in some cases not go to college or university at all. The council is proposing a grant program where students will receive grant funding on a yearly basis, a loan reduction program that is significantly more generous than the current program, and the establishment of an “Opportunity and Innovation Graduate Student Scholarship” which would provide approximately $15,000 to graduate students. The final pillar is a commitment to innovation and jobs. This is where the council is looking for government support to fund research across its sector. They are asking the government to bring together some initiatives to provide them with funding they can count on for research and innovation. They are also asking the government to provide more money to the B.C. Knowledge Development Fund. This government fund provides support in helping universities build or improve their longterm ability to engage in leading-edge research. Its goal is to fund projects that provide both economic and social benefits to the province. All of these pillars are lofty goals, and should not be discounted. The only thing we know right now is that all colleges and universities in the province are facing funding cuts – the current year’s provincial budget included reference to pending funding cuts in the 2013-14 fiscal year for the post-secondary sector. There are so many things we can do with our children in preparation for the Christmas season that could forever bring fond memories back to them. When my children were small, we would gather with a number of other families and head to an Armstrong mountain to cut our own Christmas trees. Mr. Coldicott, one of the grandparents, always went ahead and had a big fire burning near small hills that the kids could slide down, or near a pond where they could skate for awhile. We’d all stand around the fire warming up before heading back to Grandma Coldicott’s house where she had the dining room table all set up for making little candy houses. While our potluck supper was heating, the moms would help the kids and the men would set up the old folks’ tree. We built wonderful memories and I’m so thankful for having been included in this yearly event. With a month to go before Christmas it’s time to think about building memories with your children by including them in fun activities. Perhaps this year making candy or gingerbread houses could become the start of a tradition. The first recipe below is for Candy Houses. They can also be made without the cartons by simply icing graham crackers together to form the house. Another activity kids enjoy is making gifts in a jar for their teachers and relatives; I’ve included two recipes for gifts in a jar today. Enjoy the next couple of weeks before the rush and spend time with the kids. Graham Cracker Candy House Graham crackers Assortment of candies for decorating 2 egg whites 1/8 tsp. cream of tartar 2 tsp. water 2-1/2-3 cups sifted powdered sugar Clean an empty half gallon or smaller cream or milk carton in chlorine bleach and water solution. Let carton dry and trim until straight sides measure 2-1/2 inches in height. Staple the top closed. Prepare icing as follows: Beat egg whites, cream of tartar and water until frothy. Gradually add powdered sugar. Beat until mixture holds soft peaks. Fix carton to a square of cardboard with icing. Attach graham crackers to the milk carton using the frosting mixture as “glue”. Decorate with candy and extra frosting. Even small children love doing this. Gingerbread House 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, at room temp.

A gingerbread house is a perfect activity for young children, who love to decorate with candy and other delights, and they can be simple or elaborate like this detailed Victorian house. 1/2 cup dark brown sugar 1/4 cup light molasses or dark corn syrup 1 tablespoon cinnamon 1 tablespoon ground ginger 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cloves 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons water For assemblage and decoration: Melted white chocolate or Royal Icing (recipe follows) Gumdrops, licorice and peppermint, and candy as desired To Make the House: In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter, brown sugar, molasses, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and baking soda together until the mixture is smooth. Blend in the flour and water to make a stiff dough. Chill at least 30 minutes or until firm. Preheat oven to 375 F. Cut paper patterns for gingerbread house: Two rectangles, 3 by 5 inches, to make front and back of the house. Two rectangles, 3 by 5-1/2 inches for roof. Two pieces for ends of the house, 3 inches wide at the base, 3 inches to the roof line, and slanted to a peak 5-1/2 inches from the bottom. Four smaller rectangles, 1-1/2 by 1 inch for the roof and sides of the entryway. And one piece, 2 inches wide at the base, 1-1/2 inches to the roof line, and slanted to a peak 2-1/2 inches from the bottom for the front of the entryway. Roll gingerbread dough (1/4-inch thick) out to edges on a large, rimless cookie sheet. Place paper patterns onto the rolled out

dough. With a sharp, straight-edged knife, cut around each of the pieces, but leave pieces in place. Remove pattern pieces. Bake at 375 degrees F for about 15 minutes until dough feels firm. Place patterns on top of the gingerbread again and trim shapes, cutting edges with a straight-edged sharp knife. Leave to cool on baking sheet. Place royal icing into pastry bag with a writing tip and press out to decorate individual parts of house, piping on decorations, windows, door, etc., as desired. Let dry until hardened. Glue sides, front and back of house together at corners using royal icing. Place an object against the pieces to prop up until icing is dry (it only takes a few minutes). Glue the two roof pieces to the pitched roofline of the house. Then, similarly, glue the sides and roof of the entryway together with icing. Attach the entryway to the front of the house. Continue decorating the house, glueing on gumdrops, licorice and peppermint, as desired. Royal Icing: 1 pound (3-3/4 cups) powdered sugar, sifted if lumpy 1 to 2 large egg whites, or substitute 4 tsp. packaged egg whites and 1/4 cup water (liquid egg whites are available) 1 tsp. almond extract, vanilla or lemon juice Mix all of the ingredients together using an electric hand mixer, until the icing is smooth and thin enough to be pressed through a pastry bag with a writing tip. Add more lemon juice, if necessary.

Gift in a Jar Cookie Mix 1-1/3 cups all purpose flour, spooned into measuring cup and leveled 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup cooking oats 3/4 cup M&Ms 3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed 1/2 cup white sugar 1/3 – 1/2 cup chopped pecans Order of appearance of items in the jar: 1. flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt 2. oats 3. M&Ms 4. chocolate chips 5. brown sugar 6. white sugar 7. chopped pecans Instructions on jar: Place all the dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl, then add the following: 1 slightly beaten egg 1/2 cup butter (melt slightly in microwave) 1 teaspoon vanilla Combine with dry ingredients in your mixing bowl, and mix well. Use the back of a large spoon to work it all together. You may even need to use your hands to get everything incorporated. Roll the dough into 1-1/2 inch balls; place onto a parchment-covered baking sheet and bake in the oven at 350 degrees for approximately 10 minutes. Make sure the oven is preheated fully before adding cookies. Country Soup in a Jar 1/2 cup barley 1/2 cup dried split peas 1/2 cup uncooked white rice 1/2 cup dry lentils 2 tablespoons dried minced onion 2 tablespoons dried parsley 2 teaspoons salt 1/2 teaspoon lemon pepper 2 tablespoons beef bouillon granules 1/2 cup uncooked alphabet pasta 1 cup uncooked twist macaroni In wide mouth 1 quart jar, layer barley, peas, rice and lentils. Then layer around the edges the onion, parsley, salt, lemon pepper, bouillon and the alphabet pasta. Fill rest of the jar with the twist macaroni. Seal and attach a gift card, which should read: Add contents of jar to 3 quarts of water, 2 stalks of chopped celery, 2 sliced carrots, 1 cup of shredded cabbage (optional) and 2 cups diced tomatoes. Over medium low heat, cover and simmer about 1 hour, or until vegetables are tender.

Growing for Movember

arrived at UBC last November to find my only son looking less like himself and more like my first boyfriend did in 1971. As I looked at this earnest young man with the crooked moustache I felt transported back to the UBC of days long past when long hair, facial hair and bellbottom trousers ruled the campus. When I quizzed my son about his new facial feature he told me that many students were sporting moustaches not to recapture a bygone era, but to support Movember as November has come to be known. The new name, he patiently explained, is a moniker to enhance public awaredr. April Sanders ness that November is prostate cancer awareness month. Being a supporter of prostate cancer awareness, I congratulated my boy for his participation in a cause. After all, both of his granddads had died from prostate cancer and this was my son’s first venture into a political issue of some personal relevance. In Vernon I found many of my male friends were also moustache clad but I remained skeptical. It was not clear to me how looking goofy for a month would translate into a political movement. Would all these Burt Reynolds and Tom Sellecks get on the bandwagon and contribute dollars to improve prostate cancer awareness because they had a moustache? Would their facial appendages encourage others to do the same? Would a handlebar moustache increase the turnout at Do It for Dad, where our Hospital Foundation raises funds for the Prostate Cancer Support Group, PSA testing and new equipment to treat the disease here at home? Sadly, I have not seen evidence to suggest that many have made the leap from facial hair to prostate cancer support. I have looked at the international statistics for Movember and around the world the donations are paltry. Prostate Cancer Awareness and

Prevention and the support of the general public for this issue lacks momentum This is especially true when we compare funds donated or raised for Breast Cancer Awareness, provincial mammogram screening programs, breast cancer support services and public education. Despite the fact that just as many men get prostate cancer as women do breast cancer and that the impact of both are equally devastating for individuals and families, the latter is big news and the former is not. The problem is the same as it was 10 years ago. Men do not talk much about their health issues and are not regular visitors to the doctor for prevention screening. Prostate cancer is still a tough one for many men because the disease involves a rectal exam and the treatments can have devastating sexual side effects. Prostate cancer can affect a man’s sexual ability and that kind of conversation is just too much for many. All of these facts do not make the disease go away. Early diagnosis is still a goal. I fully support Movember and I like to see men have fun. Every man who can, should grow a moustache but when you do, make the direct link between that facial hair and support for prostate cancer awareness. Have your friends and family and coworkers donate to the cause in support of your effort. Hold a raffle among your supporters where the winner gets the satisfaction of giving you a clean shave at month’s end. Offer kisses for a fee. Contribute in a way that makes prostate cancer an issue that we all support and discuss freely. When other men ask you: What’s up with the stash? encourage them to see their doctor for a rectal exam at 40 if there is a family history of prostate cancer and at 50 if there is not. Support the community and the Hospital Foundation at Do It for Dad, our local Father’s Day effort to make prostate cancer something we treat in a timely manner with good equipment here at home. It’s up to each of us to make the connection work between Movember and how we best serve the sons, husbands and fathers of our community.

Long, long ago, a wee duckling, who looked quite different from his siblings, experienced what could be perceived as barnyard bullying. He was teased and pushed around by the other birds and animals, making him wander around his farm aimlessly looking for a place to fit in. It’s true the message of Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen’s 1844 fairy tale, The Ugly Duckling, still resonates today, but it also has an interesting backstory. It’s part autobiographical. “Andersen wrote the tale based on his own experience of being bullied and teased for his big nose and big feet and passion for theatre,” said Julie Dorsey, an Armstrong-based director who is bringing a musical/ comedy version of The Ugly Duckling to the local stage. Asparagus Community Theatre’s fall musical Honk! touches on a very serious subject, but it doesn’t take

itself too seriously. Although the main character finds himself ostracized by the farmyard community because he is different and ends up going off and putting his trust in the wrong place, the ending as we all know, is a happier one as he finds out who he is really is, said Dorsey. “One of my favourite lines in the play is from the mother duck: ‘He’s my son and I love him. This duckyard would be so boring if we all looked the same,’” she said. “This theme seems very timely with the bullying headlines we have faced over the last few months. (However,) there is lots of fun to be seen. in the play.” Adapted to the stage with music by George Stiles and book and lyrics by Andrew Drewe, Honk! features a cast of 16 — a mix of theatre veterans and newcomers of all ages. Actor flies high as downed pilot

hip Whitaker (Denzel Washington) is a commercial airline pilot, functioning alcoholic and substance abuser. On one particularly harrowing flight, a technical malfunction causes his plane to go into a nose dive. Captain Whitaker is able to regain control of the plane in a fashTaylor & Howe ion that’s never been done before and manages to glide the plane to safety, saving more than 100 lives. Through the investigation of the crash, the public wants to get to know the hero pilot, the airline and pilot’s union want to hide the fact that their pilot is a drunk, while the transportation officials need someone to blame. Will the truth come out? Is the truth even relevant? We say, “Come for the acting. Stay for the social commentary.” TAYLOR: I’m not a Denzel Washington fan. He’s fine. He’s just always the same. Luckily for all of us, Whip Whitaker is a quiet, serious character with occasional bursts of anger and as such, he fits Washington like a sharp pilot’s uniform. HOWE: I like Washington. I don’t think I’ve seen anything bad that he’s been in. Flight lets him act, whereas, in some of his past movies, he runs around shooting his mouth off and being cocky. John Goodman has a very small role as Whitaker’s dealer. Both times he appeared he made me chuckle to myself. Don Cheadle was very good as the cold, calculating lawyer, and Kelly Reilly (from the Sherlock Holmes movies) was excellent as another suffering substance abuser who befriends Washington.

Denzel Washington is an airline pilot with a substance abuse problem in the Robert Zemeckis drama Flight. TAYLOR: On the surface, this film is about a proud man with a substance abuse problem. Underneath, Flight has a societal subtext concerning modernity’s systemic complexity. Namely, that the truth is not nearly as important as what we perceive to be the truth. HOWE: What are you waffling on about now? TAYLOR: As soon as Whitaker wakes up in the hospital, bureaucrats are telling him what to say and do, knowing he’s got a problem, but without addressing it. Whitaker’s criminal lawyer, hired preemptively, has as his primary concern to kill the toxicology report. Yet, it gets to a point where these people begin enabling Whitaker’s substance abuse, if only to get him to court on time. His religious co-pilot is able to convince

himself there is no need to report Whitaker reeking of gin when he showed up for work that fateful morning, for if an act of God had caused the plane crash, their survival too must be part of God’s plan. Whitaker himself points to his abilities to work from within his thickening fog, rather than admit to a damaging truth. Flight stabs at the absurdity of life on its way to a hackneyed, but no less true, conclusion: The truth shall set you free. HOWE: Great cast, some excellent acting, and good story. The only drawback to Flight is that it makes me not want to fly ever again. –– Howe gives Flight 3.5 bottles of vodka out of 5. –– Taylor gives it 4 red eyes out of 5. he North Okanagan Community Concert Association invited piano trio Triple Forte to entertain at its gala evening at the Performing Arts Centre Wednesday. It would open with one of Beethoven’s finest creations, Piano Trio No. 7, universally known as The Archduke, and be followed by one of Christine Pilgrim Shostakovich’s earliest works - a love hymn, written when he was 17 to a young lady who captured his heart for almost a decade. Ravel’s Piano Trio in A Major, commonly considered a masterpiece, would round off the evening. But it was the unannounced encore that transported all present to giddy heights and brought them spontaneously to their feet. When he introduced the piece, champion cellist Yegor Dyachkov said, “You do not always get what you want. Sometimes you get what you need. And we’ve decided you need this.” Audience members who preferred “a good tune” feared the worst, partic-

ularly when Dyachkov said the composer was a modern, young Canadian woman born on a NATO base in Italy. But Kelly-Marie Murphy’s furiously fast-paced Give Me Phoenix Wings to Fly had the spirits of even the most conventional soaring as high as the gut that flew from the bows of Dyachkov and virtuoso violinist Jasper Wood who, along with Governor General gold medallist David Jalbert at the piano, comprise Triple Forte. These three masterful young musicians have known each other since they began their respective journeys into musical history in various national and international competitions as children. And, while their rapport in the Beethoven did not quite match that of the Gryphon Trio, it was certainly remarkable. Speaking of the Gryphon Trio, they commissioned Murphy’s Give Me Phoenix Wings to Fly for their Atlantic debut tour in 1997. It was reviewed by Warren Wilson in The Globe and Mail as a “craggy tour de force ... an almost uninterrupted study in tension.” I apologize for quoting another reviewer’s words, but they so echo my own that I’m compelled to continue: “... one wondered whether the phoenix had gone from the fire to the frying pan. It was a pulse-pounding barrage on the senses...”
