U2 Gift Guide 1 Sunday, November 25, 2012 - The Morning Star

Do:

Make sure that you know your company's policy on gift-giving. Be clear about who should be on your gift list. Do you get gifts for everyone in your department or just those individuals with whom you interact most frequently? * Choose thoughtful and tasteful gifts, whether buying a differentitem for each person or the same item for all. * Consider gifts that can be used in the office, such as distinctive office supplies, a photo frame, gadget, calendar, or pen. * Go for gifts that can be shared either at home or work, such as gourmet food items, books or plants. * Find out if colleagues have food or plant allergies before selecting gifts in those categories. * Take the time to package and wrap gifts with care. * *

Do’s and for exchanging gifts don’ts with coworkers

When among the masses shopping for holiday gifts, consumers might want to take a close look at the expressions on their fellow shoppers' faces. Note the ones whose eyes are glazed over, who are anxiously biting their bottom lips or seem to be exhibiting recurring facial twitches. These are not individuals on the verge of a nervous breakdown. In fact, many are otherwise well adjusted people in the throes of choosing holiday gifts for their coworkers or bosses. While there is nothing inherently complicated about choosing tokens of appreciation for one's associates or superiors, the challenge is not just choosing the right token, but in choosing something without the potential to offend or confuse the recipient. To help make the process go smoothly from purchase to presentation, here are some of the chief do's and don'ts for office gift-giving.

j j j

Don’t:

Overspend, especially when purchasing a gift for your boss. Give presents to colleagues outside of your "gift circle" in order to make a good impression or curry favor. * Choose "joke" or "gag" gifts, even for coworkers you think you know well. While the recipient might appreciate the gesture, it could be misinterpreted by others. * Re-gift or give items that are used or in anything but pristine condition. * Stray outside the limits of "good taste." In other words, don't even think about gifts that could be considered too personal (including clothing, perfume or jewelry) or are in any way political, religious, racial, or sexual. And unless you are absolutely certain of the recipient's tastes and habits, steer clear of alcoholic beverages of any kind. * Give gifts that can be misconstrued as having a hidden meaning or agenda, such as flowers (especially roses), cash, lingerie, or personal hygiene products. * Leave anyone out. Hurt feelings are hard to overcome and can strain otherwise productive working relationships * *

Intricately wrapped presents sustain the suspense of the treasure beneath the paper. Many people long to have an area where they can create wrapping magic for holiday gifts, birthday presents and other tokens of appreciation throughout the year. However, with limited space, tall rolls of gift paper may have been stashed in the back of a closet or tucked under a bed, making them inconvenient to use once it is time to wrap gifts. With just a few feet of space, anyone can create a compact gift wrapping station that, while free of fancy bells and whistles, has all that's needed to get the job done. The first step in creating your wrapping station is to find a spot that is out of the way but enables you to easily keep inventory of paper and ribbons. The back of a door or behind the door often provides adequate space to store supplies, and the width of a door might be the right size for the average roll of wrapping paper. If the door is too narrow, the rolls can be hung vertically instead of horizontally. Fortunately, gift wrap is narrow and doesn't take up much space on its own. Therefore, it usually can be tucked into a corner. Also, you just may have enough scrap materials around the house to use to build your wrapping station. Wooden dowels are an inexpensive yet valuable supply. Rolls of wrapping paper can be slid on the dowels and hung horizontally on hooks protruding from a door or wall. For a vertical installation, make a wooden frame the width and length that will be needed. Drill holes in the frame on the top

and bottom through which the dowels can be fed. Then drill small holes on the ends of the dowels. Use cabinet door handles or drawer pulls on the end that are wider than the holes made in the wooden frame. This way the drawer pulls can be unscrewed at the top to remove the dowels and refill with a fresh roll of paper. Then the knobs can be screwed back on to prevent the dowels from falling through the wooden frame. A separate dowel can be used to keep rolls of ribbon neat and within reach. A scissor hung on a hook or attached to a string will ensure that you're never hunting for a scissor under rolls of wrapping paper. It also keeps the scissor safely out of reach of young children. If desired, a tape dispenser can be mounted on the wall or door as well, enabling one-handed measuring and cutting of the tape. Get creative with your homemade wrapping station and then enjoy how efficiently you can wrap gifts.

Holiday decorating is a big part of the holiday season. This year creating homemade ornaments can be a crafty project that helps families make new holiday memories. There are several different ways to create personalized, do-it-yourself ornaments.

and finished. Turn keepsake boxes into painted and ribbon-adorned gift boxes. Stain a treasure chest that can be used to store reindeer snacks for Santa's crew. Turn small decorative pieces into ornaments for the tree. Paint and affix wood initials onto stocking holders to identify to whom each stocking belongs. Crafty individuals also can turn plain wood plaques into signs with clever sayings, such as "Park your sleigh here."

MAKE YOUR OWN

Photo ornaments

Fun photo ornaments showcase how a family has changed and grown over the years. You can glue a photo to a ceramic ornament and cover it with decoupage glaze to set it permanently. Try purchasing clear, glass ornaments, then remove the top of the ornament, which is usually spring-loaded, before slipping a photo inside and replacing the top. You also can laminate a photo, punch a hole in the top and affix a ribbon.

Ceramic ornaments

The popularity of paint-it-yourself pottery has led to an increase in ceramic and crafts shops across

the country. During the holiday season such shops offer many holiday items that can be painted. Often the store will then fire the pieces after they are painted so that they are shiny and hardened for display. Those who want to do their painting at home can visit their local craft or hobby shop, where typically there are unfinished ceramic ornaments that can be

painted with acrylic paints found right in the next aisle. A finishing coat of clear glaze will help protect the ornaments from year to year.

Wood crafts

Many of today's craft centers have expanded to include sections devoted to unfinished wood items. Everything from letters to animal cutouts to boxes and rocking horses can be purchased

Scavenge around the house

Young children can use any medium for making ornaments. Garlands made of macaroni or popcorn are traditional. Fabric scraps can be sewn and stuffed with potpourri for homemade scent satchels. Hand-drawn pictures can be made and laminated and hung on the tree. Homemade items can add whimsy and a personal touch to the holiday season.

Hot gadgets for the holidays (NC)—If you’re confused about which of the latest gadgets to get for your loved ones this holiday season, help is here. Take a look at the season’s ‘gadget trends’. Tablets: A sleek new tablet is probably on the list of many this season. There are many brands and models available, but the Apple iPad is a pretty safe bet. If you’re on a tighter budget, the Google Nexus 7 at under $300 is a good buy. Video game systems: The Nintendo Wii U is expected to be a really big seller this season. Elsewhere, expect good sale prices on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 as they are both a couple of years older. Cheaper HDTVs: Not everyone is sold on the latest fancy 3D TVs. The good news is that if you don’t need 3D, you can expect deals on plain HDTVs – even big ones in the 50-60” range. MP3 players: Smartphones can play music and videos, but there’s has been resurgence of standalone portable music players. They’re great for jogging, going to the gym and other activities where you’d rather leave your pricey smartphone at home.

Shipping gifts more than just timing

• Carefully pack perishables.

When sending perishable items, always send them via next-day delivery and never ship them near the end of the week, such as a Friday or Saturday. Items shipped on Friday and Saturday should be able to withstand a few days of being in transit. But when sending cheeses, fruits or any other perishable items, it's best to do so early in the week and choose next-day delivery.

When shipping holiday gifts… much of the focus is on getting those gifts in the mail on time. While it's important to avoid procrastinating when shipping holiday gifts, there's more to shipping gifts than just getting them sent out promptly. When shipping holiday gifts this season, consider the following tips.

• Protect the gift.

Be sure to protect the gift, especially if it's fragile. Use bubble cushioning and packing peanuts when sending fragile items through the mail. If sending multiple items, wrap each item tightly in bubble cushioning but leave some space between the items for peanuts.

Dolls hpaovwe er staying ay thiassohnolid se

(NC)—From vintage paper dolls and clay action figures to modern ones with an eye for fashion and a suitcase of accessories, dolls have been one of the most popular children’s toys for centuries. This season, a new range of dolls will flood stores in time to spark the imaginations of the kids on your shopping list. MGA Entertainment Canada outlines the top three trends to watch for this holiday season: • Play therapy – For many children, dolls are a great way to deal with and work through complex life events. For example, bald dolls like True Hope Bratz allow children dealing with cancer and other illnesses that cause hair loss to role play, seek comfort and process what is happening to them. • Interactive elements – New technologies are helping toy companies add fun, new twists to traditional dolls to help them pass the test of time. Dolls that talk, dance and sing are not only fun, but they can be an excellent learning tool, too. • Collectability – Many dolls and figurines, like Lalaloopsy dolls, come with their own unique personality and accessories, but are also part of a set.Building a collection gradually can give children a sense of pride, teach them patience and provide years of entertainment as they watch it grow.

• Insure more expensive gifts.

Don't skimp on insurance when sending expensive gifts such as jewelry through the mail. Shipping companies typically only insure items up to a certain amount, so insure more expensive items through your own insurance company so their full value is covered.

• Comparison shop when shipping.

Comparison shopping not only applies to holiday gifts, but shipping as well. Shipping companies, including the post office, compete for business come the holidays, and you can likely find a good deal to reduce the cost of shipping holiday gifts, costs that can add up if shipping several gifts.

Gift Guide 1 Sunday, November 25, 2012 - The Morning Star U7

THOUGHTFUL GIFTS that don't require much thought On the heels of the holiday giving season, most gift-givers realize how difficult it can be finding the "perfect" gift for a recipient. But givers can look to a number of gifts that are very thoughtful but needn't take more than a little forethought. ◊ GIFT CARD: You may be thinking a gift card doesn't sound that thoughtful. However, when paired with a listing of gift items, it's easy to illustrate the thought that went into the gift. It may make sense to simply purchase one of those interesting items, but this way you're giving the recipient the choice of what he or she really wants to select. ◊ SOMETHING ENGRAVED OR MONOGRAMMED: A simple scarf turns into something more special when it includes monogrammed initials or a special saying. The same can be said for anything from a picture frame to candle holders. Taking the time to have something monogrammed or engraved imparts thoughtfulness into the gift.

◊ PET ACCESSORIES: People view their pets as members of the family and often as small children (when small children are not yet present). Providing an adorable gift for his or her pet may be seen as a heartfelt gesture. Be sure to pick up a little something for the pet parent as well, though. ◊ HOBBY GIFTS: Recognizing the interests of a loved one is a clear sign that you're in tune with what he or she enjoys to do. If you have an avid reader on your hands, a new e-reader or some e-books may be ideal. Sports fans could appreciate tickets to the next home game of their favorite team. Someone who dabbles in culinary creations may delight over a gift basket full of top-of-the-line cooking utensils. ◊ A SPENDING SPREE: Take your loved one to his or her favorite store and encourage him or her to pick out a few favorite items. Set a price limit or let them choose regardless of price. This way you can spend time together and see the joySoon m et their face when he or she is choosing hi n treasured item.

(NC)— Guys want to look good no matter whether they’re a ‘man’s man’ or prefer the ‘mad men’ look. Recently, 87% of men surveyed said that personal grooming is important to them and that’s why it’s surprising that so many get even the most basic grooming essentials wrong. Help the man in your life start the New Year off right. Take a look at these grooming tips and gift suggestions: 1. Smelling too good can be bad. Help him update that scent he’s been sporting since high school by taking him to the fragrance department and find a new option that will enhance his manly natural scent. And remember that subtle leaves a better impression. 2. Stubble is sexy. Sporting the right amount of stubble takes work and the right tools. Make sure he has a beard trimmer to keep it well kept. The Styleshaver has a full size trimmer and precision trimmer on one side and a dual foil shaver on the other. The double headed shaver allows men to experiment with new styles, providing them with three precision grooming tools in one. 3. Keeping below the neck in check. While we’re on the topic of hair, only 1/3 of men admit to thinking about the areas below the neck. Make sure he’s got a body trimmer that’s suited for the job. The Philips Bodygroom Plus removes hair below the neck in minutes leaving smooth results for weeks. Its 2D pivoting head can naturally follows his body’s contours, removing unwanted hair from even the most sensitive parts. 4. Bad dental can make you look mental. Dentist’s recommend electric toothbrushes over the manual kind; they provide a better clean and promote healthy gums. The Sonicare Diamond Clean comes with five brush modes for a whole mouth clean feeling that really lasts. It’s even great for guys with sensitive teeth. 5. Skin care is manly. Men’s skin is tougher than women’s, yet it’s still susceptible to aging, wrinkles and other skin ailments. Help him choose a moisturizer suited to his skin type, and a daily face wash to keep his skin hydrated and younger looking.

Giving on a tight

BUDGET

(NC)—To all the husbands wondering what to buy their better halves this holiday season, it’s not as complicated as you think. To get it right, take a look at these guidelines: Do: listen to her and take hints. She might have mentioned a pair of earrings or a weekend getaway. Maybe it’s a designer bag/shoes/coat she’s hinted about all year while assuming you weren’t actually paying attention. Do: buy something to make her feel pampered: a day at the spa, new perfume, or a fabulous bottle of wine (extra points if it’s from the year you met/got engaged/were married). Do: make her feel appreciated: load up a digital photo frame with memorable photos, a new iPod with songs from your past,

or an eReader with books she’s always wanted to read. Don’t: buy something that makes her feel like your mom: avoid sweater vests with cats knit into them, wrinkle creams, supportive underwear, or calcium supplements. Don’t: make her feel like your housekeeper with a vacuum, iron or spatulas, all great items but they might not make the best gifts. (If your wife has hinted at a high-end Dyson vacuum or a KitchenAid stand mixer, you can make an exception.) Don’t: buy the first thing that you see. Chances are she’ll get you something better than a pair of slippers or a picture frame so you should do the same. And if she doesn’t, you still win because now you’re the thoughtful one.

shopping for your wife

As global economic woes continue, holiday spending remains difficult to predict. With the holiday season on the horizon once again, no one truly knows what consumer response will be. But many consumers figure to exercise some restraint this holiday season, sticking to a budget when buying gifts for family and friends. While budgets are good ways to limit spending, a holiday spending budget doesn’t mean shoppers can’t still put a smile on their loved ones’ faces. In fact, with a few tips, holiday shoppers can stick to their budgets and still enjoy a happy holiday season. Get creative. Holiday gifts don’t have to be bought at the local mall or from an online retailer. Gift-givers with unique talents can create their own gifts and save some money along the way. For example, personalized wood carving, knit a scarf, mittens or even a blanket for a loved one. Such personalized gifts are often especially meaningful to their recipients. Be patient. Nowadays, many families are so spread out geographically that they don’t always get together on Christmas Day. If that’s the case and you won’t be seeing your family until a few days after Christmas, take advantage of the special sales offered in the days after the actual holiday. Items are often heavily discounted, and if you can stay patient, your patience might just pay off with substantial savings. Establish spending rules with family members before the shopping season begins. In an effort to reduce some of the financial burden of the holiday season. This saves everyone money and ensures no one finds themselves with substantial debt come the new year. Do a gift exchange with family and friends. In a gift exchange, each member of the family draws a name out of a hat and then only buys a gift for that specific person. This even has the added benefit of allowing shoppers to buy something a little more expensive for a family member since they aren’t obligated to buy gifts for anyone else. Start early. The earlier you begin your holiday shopping, the more you can spread out your spending. This reduces the financial stress of the season while still allowing shoppers to get something special for everyone on their shopping list. Holiday spending may or may not increase this holiday season. But savvy shoppers can still make the most of their spending without breaking the bank.

U12 Gift Guide 1 Sunday, November 25, 2012 - The Morning Star

The majority of cards are bought in boxed packages or groupings of photo cards. Gone are the days of hand-picking individual greeting cards for every recipient. This trend toward general-theme cards has streamlined the process and can help senders start their tasks earlier than ever before. Some people like to take advantage of post-holiday sales to stock up on greeting cards for the following year at a deep discount. This means they can write the cards out at their leisure and then simply toss them into the mailbox at the appropriate time. When sent domestically, it is safe to assume that cards mailed out up to 2 weeks before Christmas will arrive on time. After that point, you may be risking lateness, particularly for rural delivery addresses unless cards are sent priority. For those who need to mail cards internationally, sticking close to the end of November will ensure they arrive in a timely manner. People who want to make a statement and not have their greeting cards get lost in the crowd may intentionally mail them late and lean toward wishing health and prosperity for the new year, rather than sending a card tied to a specific holiday. This gives extra time for mailing and will set cards apart from the many others. Photo cards have grown in popularity, and people interested in having a professional photographer shoot their holiday card photos would be wise to make an appointment as early as possible. Popular photographers often start holiday photo shoots in October. Keep in mind that the photographs can take a while to be processed and arrive. For those who are on borrowed time, taking a photo with a personal camera and having prints made up at a pharmacy or retail store can save time. It is unlikely that professional photos taken in December can be printed and mailed and still arrive on time. Also, be sure to heed copyright laws concerning photographs. It may be illegal to scan an image from a photographer or photo studio and have prints made without written permission. Postage is another thing that will have to be considered when mailing out cards. While many cards fall under the weight and size limits of a regular first class postage stamp, unusually shaped envelopes or heavy greeting cards may cost more. Rather than have them returned, it is a good idea to have at least one card weighed at the post office to ensure the right amount of postage is affixed. Some cards will be packaged with envelopes that state "Additional postage may be required" right on the box. Greeting cards are an important component of the holiday season. Ensuring they arrive on time requires planning and sending them out with ample time to spare.

TIPS for getting

Greeting Cards out on time

Millions of greeting cards are sent out each holiday season and all in a relatively short period of time. Men and women who hope to send holiday greeting cards must purchase, prepare and mail the cards early enough so they are received prior to the holiday. It is never too early to begin greeting card preparation and assembly.

Regifting Can Be “green”

Gift Guide 1 Sunday, November 25, 2012 - The Morning Star U13

If Done the Right Way

The practice of regifting has been the butt of many jokes throughout the years. Some people are known to be serial regifters, and family and friends dread exchanging gifts with these people. However, is it tacky or trendy to give away the items received that can't be returned or put to good use? Regifting in a sense is recycling of merchandise that may otherwise end up in the garbage. Individuals who are serious about making strides to protect the environment say that regifting is being

"green."

Done with finesse, regifting can be a handy and happy holiday experience. Done the wrong way, however, it is a recipe for family feuds or awkward situations with friends. Here are some ways to handle regifting in a tactful manner. Regifting should not simply be a method of pawning off items that are detested or ugly. Only regift items that will have utility for someone else -- even if they do not fit into your lifestyle. For example, duplicates of personal appliances or too many baby outfits in one size can be passed on to another. If you're interested in recycling, regift for the right reasons. Let the recipient know that you're concerned about saving the planet and are passing on this "new" item to him or her to be environmentally responsible. Do not regift items that have been previously used -- even if you saved the foam and other packaging material. A recipient will not appreciate a pair of pants that have the tags removed and have been laundered twice. Do update the wrapping paper on regifted items. It is still a gift after all. It is tacky to simply pass the gift on as is. Also, by not changing the wrapping paper, you run the risk of leaving a gift tag or card in place with your name on it instead of the new recipient's. Do not regift outdated items, even if the tags are still in place. It will be an obvious regift if you're giving away a tie-dyed concert

T- s h i r t f r o m 1986. Don't r e g i f t items that are standard holiday "safe" gifts and ones the recipient probably doesn't want anyhow. These include boxed cologne or perfume sets that feature knock-offs of designer fragrances, scarves and gloves, bootleg DVDs or video games, random books, or other items that can be purchased from a street vendor. It's not a good idea to regift food items, either. You run the risk of the food having gone stale. Plus, food gifts -- unless purchased for a foodie with specific culinary interests -- tend to be tacky to begin with. How many sausage and cheese baskets does one person need? Be sure to regift to a different social circle. That means if you have something from a work friend you may be able to pass it on to a family member. If there is any chance of the previous gift-giver seeing his or her gift used by another person, avoid regifting. When all else fails, and Aunt Betsy's gifted cross-stitch bath towels adorned with unicorns will not be appropriate for anyone on your gift list, consider selling them. Chances are someone on popular auction sites will want items up for regifting. After all, "one man's trash is another man's treasure."

U14 Gift Guide 1 Sunday, November 25, 2012 - The Morning Star

Gifts for your holiday host or hostess

Entertaining is part of the holiday season when hosts and hostesses open their homes to many friends and family to celebrate a time of giving and togetherness. Gifts for the host and/or hostess can show appreciation to the men and women who go above and beyond. A hostess gift can be as simple or as extravagant as your budget allows. Many people tend to gravitate toward food-related gifts because of their simplicity and the idea that they can be served at the gathering of friends and family. But conventional etiquette suggests that hosts and hostesses are not obligated to serve the beverages or foods guests bring and should not feel ashamed to reserve them for their own private use. So guests may want to think outside the box when gifting holiday hosts this season. Here are

some ideas to consider.

* Flavored dipping oils:

Herb-infused oils lend a different taste to prepared foods and also can be used as a bread garnish in lieu of butter. Pair a flavored oil with a loaf of gourmet bread and include a decorative, shallow bowl that can be used for the oil.

* Wine caddy:

The number of restaurants that enable you to bring your own beverages has multiplied. This means that diners can benefit from practical ways to transport their favorite vintage from home to the table. Wine caddies and holders

come in many different designs, from some that resemble a woman's clutch to suitcase-inspired designs.

* After-dinner treat:

Put together a basket of foods that can be served after dinner. A citrusy palate cleanser, like lemon-infused butter cookies, fresh fruit and a sparkling beverage may fit the bill perfectly. Specialty stores often sell gift "towers" this time of year that package together delicious treats. Scented sugars: Oil isn't * the only condiment that can be infused with aroma and additional flavor. Purchase canning jars and fill them with your favorite brand of granulated sugar. Add flavorings, such as cinnamon sticks, vanilla beans, mint leaves, or hazelnuts, to give foods a subtle essence of flavor. Tie a bow around the jar and present it as a thoughtful gift.

* Garden gift basket:

Although the cold weather is here, a garden gift basket can still make a welcome gift. Include flower seeds, fertilizer sticks, a garden trowel, a pair of gardening gloves

and any other essentials you can think of.

* Spa gift certificate:

Entertaining is hard work and a hostess may enjoy some time to recuperate once the holidays have come and gone. A gift certificate for a facial or massage will provide at least an hour of pampering. * Homemade treats: Much in the way a hand-written thankyou note can convey how much you appreciate a gift, a handmade gift can tell a host that you were thankful to be invited to an event. If you prepare a signature dish, whip it up and bring it along. It's also easy to create some simple garnishes and package them in a decorative tin or jar. Think homemade salsa or a homemade chocolate ganache sauce. * Breakfast in bed: Enable the host and hostess to sleep in the next day by having breakfast all ready to go. Put together a basket or tray with individual bottles of juice, packets of tea or instant coffee and some gourmet muffins or scones. Add a jar of jam and some small spreading knives so breakfast can be served with minimal hassle. There are many gifts that can treat a host or hostess to something special as a token of appreciation for opening up his or her home during the holiday season.
