Salmon return to Sullivan

Students thrilled by 7-pound coho spawning in creek near their school Jeff Nagel Nobody at Sullivan Heights Secondary School can remember it happening before. Bright red coho salmon – adult seven-pounders – spawning right behind the school in rain-swollen Sullivan Creek. “It’s truly awesome,” principal Rex Hayes said. “The kids are really excited about this.” Hayes almost didn’t believe it himself when teacher Jeff Vaughan spotted the fish in the creek, which is a tributary of the Serpentine River. “We walk back there and lo and behold, there it is – a seven or eight pound salmon, bright red.” Call it the little creek that could. Sullivan Creek – a stream small enough to step over – once ran underneath where the school now sits. Carrie Baron, Surrey’s drainage and environment

manager, said the creek was diverted when the school was built about a decade ago. Rock and woody debris were carefully placed to make it more welcoming riparian habitat for salmonids, as the creek supports both coho and chum salmon. Baron had assumed the fish were doing well, but said Sullivan Secondary’s report

is the first visual confirmation she’s heard of it. Classes practically ground to a halt as students headed out last Friday afternoon to watch several salmon wriggle up and downstream. “I’ve never actually seen [salmon spawning] before,” vice-principal Bal Ranu said. “It’s the coolest thing to see.”

A Christmas market (without the bridge) By Jennifer Lang A home-grown gift and craft fair is back this Friday and Saturday, offering a taste of the variety of goods available at a larger Christmas market to local shoppers. There will be more than 70 vendor tables to browse at the fourth annual Christmas in Cloverdale Gift and Craft Market. It runs Nov. 30 from 5 to 9 p.m. and Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Shannon Hall and the Alice McKay building at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds (6050 176 Street, Surrey). The annual gift and craft fair was founded in 2009 by Clo-

verdale’s Heather Harasymow, a resident who wanted to provide shoppers south of the Fraser with the variety of a large Christmas market – without having to cross a bridge. She promises you’ll find the perfect gift for those hard-tobuy-for people on your list. It’s family-friendly, too, so bring the kids along. In addition to face-painting, children can visit with Santa and enjoy magic performances by Joseph the Magician, who will also be making balloon animals. There’s will also be door prizes. Admission is free, but please bring a non-perishable food

The marketplace features everything from glass works, handmade and organic soaps and spa products, to hand knitted scarves, hats, and home baked goods. This year there will be some truly unique items on display, including leather goods made from “up-cycled” leather, beauty products, handmade jewelry, watches, original paintings, baby clothes and more. The harness racing season at Fraser Downs gets underway Jan. 1, 2013 and runs to May 11, with the second half of the season starting up again on August. 17 and running to Dec. 29. Meanwhile, the committee continues to study the long-term viability of the industry, and a draft strategic plan to be released in December, with a final version expected in the new year.

Next year’s live harness racing schedule at Cloverdale’s Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino has been finalized. There will be 10 months of racing in 2013, with 82 race days over 39 weeks. That’s the same number of days as the 2012 schedule, the B.C. Horse Racing Industry Management Committee’s director of racing sustainability said in a letter to the industry. A formal announcement will be made once the thoroughbred schedule is approved, and consulta-

ER to fully reopen next week By Jeff Nagel The cost of the Nov. 19 flood at Surrey Memorial Hospital’s emergency department is now estimated at between $2 and $3 million. That figure includes restoring damage to the building, some medical equipment, lost supplies and extra staff time. Fraser Health spokesman Roy Thorpe-Dorward said the initial tally does not include the ER’s MRI machine, which is still to be assessed by a technician coming in soon. “That is still the big unknown for us at this point,” he said, adding a new MRI costing “a few million” could more than double the cost of the flood. Water burst through the back wall of the ER after an excavator broke a water main at the SMH expansion construction site. Fraser Health officials expect insurance held by the subcontractor responsible for the break will cover damage, but that’s still to be worked out. The hospital itself is also fully insured. Thorpe-Dorward said the ER is expected to fully reopen early next week. Restoration work is progressing well. Royal Columbian, Peace Arch and Langley Memorial hospitals have felt the most impact from the diversion of ER patients who would normally go to Surrey. Ambulances are taking new emergency cases to whichever hospital has the most room at

any time. He said patients that are stabilized and admitted at another hospital are often being transferred back to SMH later. “They’ve still go the

full inpatient capability in Surrey,” he said, noting only the ER is closed. Patients arriving on their own at SMH’s ER are being redirected to the nearby Jim Pattison

Outpatient Surgery and Care Centre, which is acting as a temporary ER. As of Sunday, about 550 patients had been treated there. – Black Press

A local paramedic looks at the risks faced by police men and women – from a parent’s perspective Last week, the Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial Ribbon Society posted the following poem and note by Cloverdale paramedic Will Rogers. Dedicated to the memory of fallen officers, it takes on renewed significance following the death of Surrey RCMP officer Cst. Adrian Oliver. “On that Day” On that day, we said hello, and marveled at how you had your mother’s eyes, your father’s ears. We held you tight and said, “my child, nothing will hurt you.” On that day, we all cried together, tears of joy and our world had changed forever. On another day, you took your first step and your world had changed forever. On another day, you fell off your bike and we said, “We will show you how to be careful and safe.” On another day, you went to school for the first time, and were away all day. On another day, you got into trouble at school, and you said, “Wow you can fix anything.” On another day, you said, “We are not dating but I really like them.” On another day, you drove the

car by yourself, and our world had changed forever. On that day, you finished high school we all cried tears of joy. On another day, you sat us down and said, “I am going to serve” and our lives had changed forever. On another day, you wore your uniform for the first time, and we said, “We are so proud of you”. On another day, they gave you a weapon and your life changed forever. On another day, you swore, “I will do my duty and help to keep you safe. On another day, some may have said, “Mom Dad, I’m getting married.” On another day, some may have said, “They have my eyes.” On that day, you went out on your first shift, your first deployment you said, “I’ll be fine,” “I will be careful.” “I will be back,” and “I love you.” On that day, at that moment the phone rang. Door had a knock and somehow, I just knew. It was bad. At that moment, my world fell out from under me and has changed forever. At that moment, I knew I could not fix this. On that day, you did your duty

I felt the same kind of loss when four Mounties were gunned down in Mayorthorpe, and then relived those same emotions when the four were gunned down in Lakewood, Washington. I felt a huge sense of pride when I observed 1,000 Mounties in their Red Serge marching into the Tacoma Dome with a look on their faces that said to me, “You are not alone.” After these events I felt compelled to try and put these feelings into words that could project the emotions that might come with such an event and at the same time say thank you to the fallen and their families. I would be humbled and proud to have my poem associated with your efforts and hope I never have to read it out at a fallen service man or woman’s funeral, but I know that may be a reality that will come.

Points of view

Rogers also posted the following note: I wrote the poem, “On That Day” after watching a CBC special on a military family who had lost a son and husband whose wife was also in the military. I saw the pure, raw emotion emanate from such traumatic event in their lives and how they dealt with such a sudden loss. How they looked to each other for strength to cope and move on knowing deep down that their lives had changed forever. As a father and grandfather I look at my son and wonder if I could be so strong in the face of his sudden loss. I’m not so sure. I have voiced this to him on occasion, “not only is he my son, he is my only son.”

A novel by Kwantlen Polytechnic University creative writing instructor Genni Gunn has been made into a film. The Riverbank, based on Gunn’s novel Tracing Iris, premiered at the Sudbury International Film Festival in Ontario this fall. The movie was filmed in and around Sudbury. Gunn had the chance to be on set for two days, and was amazed at seeing her characters come to life. It stars Keri Matchett and Kenneth Welsh. “I think the actors are perfectly suited for the roles, and although the film is a much simpler version of the book,” says Gunn, “it still retains the very important relationship between a father and daughter, and explores issues of abandonment.” The Riverbank directed by John L’Ecuyer, is a thriller about a woman

more, through games, crafts and projects. They’ll also learn about responsible pet ownership. The last class is a field trip. For those hardto-buy-for teens, the society offers a popular Junior Zoo Keeping course. This is an eightweek course starting Jan. 8. It runs for two hours every Saturday. Teens from 13 to 17 years will learn about animals of all kinds, get lots of hands-on work with reptiles, small mammals, amphibians and many others, plus they’ll learn about zoo-keeping and animal care. They’ll also complete four projects, one of which is training a domestic rat. An unusual gift option for an animal lover of any age is a yearly membership with the Urban Safari Rescue Society. Membership includes three, free guided tours of the animal facility at 1395 176 Street, a monthly newsletter with all the latest news about Urban Safari, plus a 10 per cent discount on all courses, including the Nature Club, along with voting privileges at the annual general meeting (for those aged 19 and older). Membership is tax deductible. To register or for more information on all these gift ideas, contact Urban Safari Rescue Society in association with Cinemazoo at 604-5311100 or email info@urbansafarirescue.ca.

Giving warms the heart. Donating a coat can warm two at a time.

Thanks, Peter

The Surrey Museum Community Advisory Board recently thanked retiring curator-archivist Peter Johnson, centre, for his 15 years of excellent service. He’s flanked by committee chair Bob McMurray, left, and Heritage Services Manager Jacqueline O’Donnell.

Coats for Kids The Greater Vancouver Homebuilders’ Association is once again collecting clothing donations as part of its Coats for Kids campaign. Now in its 17th year, the annual campaign works on behalf of the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau, providing a brighter Christmas for families in need. There are 64 locations in 14 municipalities serving as drop-off sites to Dec. 7. “Last year the response to Coats for Kids was heartwarming as Lower Mainland residents donated more than 3,000 coats,

scarves, gloves, blankets and new, unwrapped toys and gifts for distribution to children, teenagers and adults,” said Blake Hudema, chair of the GVHBA. Surrey residents have a number of dropoff locations to choose from, including Steels Industrial Products Ltd. at 15055 54A Ave., Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., Stor-More Closet & Blinds at 19231 54 Avenue, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Surrey Leader at 200 5450 152 Street, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and BC Classifieds at 102 152 Street, Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Bring Fido in from the cold this winter As temperatures drop and winter’s wrath draws near, BC SPCA constables across the province are responding to more frequent calls about animals being left outdoors in freezing temperatures, with little or no protection from the elements. While the SPCA responds to countless cases where animals are in serious distress after being deliberately neglected outdoors, even well-loved family pets can become sick or injured in harsh weather. Here are some simple tips to keep your pet healthy and happy this winter: • Antifreeze can be a deadly winter hazard for pets, who find the taste appealing. Ethylene glycol antifreeze is extremely toxic to pets and wildlife — a mere tablespoon is enough to kill a cat or small dog. Ensure you are using pet-safe, propylenebased antifreeze, which you will find at automotive supply stores if you’re adding it yourself, or you can

ask your mechanic for it if you’re having your vehicle professionally winterized. • Road salt is toxic if ingested and can also irritate dogs’ paws. When outside with your dog, pay special attention to where he’s walking and ensure you wipe his paws thoroughly after walks and play to remove any salt. (The SPCA recommends using petfriendly, non-corrosive de-icing compounds.) • Ice can also cut your dog’s paws — watch your dog closely for signs he may be injured during exercise, and check for cuts and sores after exercise. • Cats and wild animals have been known to seek warmth inside the motor com-

Antifreeze, road salt, and frozen water bowls are among the hazards facing your pet when the temperature drops.

partment of vehicles during winter. Make it a habit to thump the hood of your car before starting it to chase away any animals who may be hiding inside. The BC SPCA is strongly opposed to keeping pets outside, particularly in cold temperatures. • If you must leave your animal outside for short periods, ensure that he or she has an appropriate shelter that is elevated off the ground and insulated. It should also be regularly cleaned and cleared of any environ-

mental debris. The outdoor shelter should also be appropriate to the weight and coat of the animal; he or she must be able to sit, stand, lie down and turn around freely and easily. • Your dog must also have access to potable water at all times so check regularly to ensure that the water in the dish is not frozen. Visit spca.bc.ca for more information on winter safety tips.

The Christmas lady

Welcome to the home of Sharon Vrecko, where it’s feeling a lot like Christmas By Jennifer Lang When it comes to getting into the Christmas spirit, Santa’s got nothing on Sharon Vrecko. For more than 40 years, the decorating dynamo has turned her home into a Christmas wonderland, an annual tradition she shows no sign of abandoning any time soon. “I just love Christmas,” smiles Vrecko, who is wearing Christmas tree earrings, a Santa teddy bear sweater, and dark slacks patterned with wreaths, candy canes and presents. A visit to her home last week offered a tantalizing preview. “Usually, my target date is Dec. 1,” says Vrecko, who explains it all began in 1967 – the first year she was married. She had $80 to spend on decorations, and went to the Army and Navy department store. It was “more than enough to totally decorate our one-bedroom apartment,” she recalls. These days, she’s got a lot more floor (and wall) space to work with. If she sees a decoration or collectible she likes, she buys it, but keeps strictly focused. “I don’t just ‘buy’ like I used to. I think.” Everything – from the miniature Santas representing countries (and family members) around the globe to tiny, snowcovered Christmas towns – is carefully arranged, contained to specific sections of rooms or pieces of furniture.

EVAN SEAL / BLACK PRESS

Welcome to Sharon Vrecko’s home in Cloverdale, where it’s been feeling a lot like Christmas for weeks now.

“I try and theme everything.” A collection of angels gracing the piano in the corner of the family room is her pride and joy. “I walked into a Christmas store about nine years ago, and I saw them.” She planned to buy one and start collecting. “I walked through the store with one, and then I thought, ‘No! I have to have them all now!’ I went back and I bought ‘em all. And I’m glad I did, because the next year, they didn’t have them. They never made

them again.” Now retired from her job at Canada Post (although she still helps answer letters to Santa) Vrecko used to spend her tips from letter-carrying on Christmas collectibles. As she points to various items, a memory sweeps into focus with each one. A holdout against artificial trees she relented after her husband bought her a rotating artificial tree that was pre-lit. She was skeptical at first. “He

says, ‘you only have to use it for a couple of years, and it will pay for itself, and you can go back to your live tree.” Predictably, she loves it now. She used to take an entire week off work to get all her decorating done, starting as soon as her four sons (now grown) went off to school, taking a break for supper, and then continuing into the evening. It now takes her a month to See A MONTH / Page 15

We were married by Santa and other Cloverdale tales We asked you for your Christmas stories, memories, traditions and photos. Among the submissions we received were these two messages from separate email accounts but apparently coming from the same happy household:

Our Christmas Story My wife and I were married by a reverend 12 years ago. However, we were married by Santa Claus four years before that. My wife and I were dating at the time and decided to get a Santa picture at the mall together. After the picture, Santa held our hands and talked to us. He noted the love between the two of us. After we left Santa’s lap, we both commented on how we felt we had just been married by Old Saint Nick himself. This shows us that Santa knows if you’re naughty, nice, or if you have a love connection! Ryan Stubbings

More of your Yuletide tales In asking readers to share their Christmas stories, we also reached out via social media. “What’s your best Christmas story, Cloverdale? we asked. “The Cloverdale Volunteer Fire Department’s annual kid’s Xmas parties!!!! For volunteers and families,” replied Kathleen Dann Honey, remembering the good times. She lives in Hawaii but keeps tabs on hometown happenings via Facebook. Another reader chimed in with a fond Christmas memory that didn’t happen in December at all. “How about Xmas in June!” replied Twitter user @_EricaDawn. “When they filmed Deck the Halls and all the locals including myself were dressed as if it were.” She recalled how the extras were dressed in full winter jackets, toques, mitts and the works, even though it was 22 degrees out. “So much fun though,” she added. Dawn noted that some of the film’s (many) seasonal set decorations have been put to good use as a legacy in the historic town centre.

Movie magic, lasting legacy Cloverdale’s historic downtown hasn’t changed much in 50 years, making it a popular backdrop for films, TV shows and even commercials seeking a typical small U.S. town. But there’s more to Cloverdale than Hot Rod, the Adam Samberg star vehicle, TV’s Smallville, or, more recently, episodes of Supernatural, Fringe and Stargate: Universe. Cloverdale was the setting for a Coca Cola Christmas commercial that featured a parade down Main Street, and as with the Deck the Halls props, some of the decorations from the production can be seen today festooning 176 Street at this time of year, creating a festive atmosphere. For those not in the know, Deck the Halls is a 2006 movie starring Matthew Broderick and Danny DeVito about two competitive neighbours who try to outdo each

Four-legged retirees grace new calendar

By Jennifer Lang An organization that finds new homes for retired racehorses coming off the track at Fraser Downs presents its 2013 calendar – just in time for Christmas. Greener Pastures, the B.C. Standardbred Horse Adoption Society, is selling the calendars as a fundraiser, making it a natural choice as a stocking stuffer for the horse lover in your life. The society is dedicated to retraining and finding loving new homes for retired Standardbreds. Some of them never quite made it as race horses to begin with. Others earned thousands on the track during their careers. About 50 are adopted out each year. The society operates a rehabilitation centre in South Surrey, where there are an average of 10 horses in its care at any one time. Standardbreds are friendly, loving horses who thrive on having a job to do and try their best to please. With a little training and patience, most adapt well to the

saddle. The calendar features some of the success stories of 2012. In July, a successfully adopted former racehorse named Solar Wind is seen happily frolicking, along with photos Don’t Say Anything and Urworstknightmare, a pretty bay who now goes by the sunnier Dreamfair. Then there’s barn favourite Luongo – a handsome guy with an easy-going personality – who recently

found a new home. He’ll be living in Maple Ridge, where he’ll be a trail buddy for Dawn. The society is a registered charity that relies heavily on the generosity of the public. Tax deductible cash donations accepted. The calendars are $15. The society also sells T-shirts, caps and bumper stickers. Visit the Greener Pastures online store at www.greenerpastures.ca.

The hosts with the most: Chris Boyd and Jordan Birch. Wait a second. Do vests even count?

Bad taste, such fun Are you seeing packs of prancing reindeer and battalions of swaddled snowmen? Maybe you’ve been sampling too many Christmas libations – nope, it’s just your sweater. Well, have we got the party for you. Put on your gaudiest, most outrageous Yuletide sweater and join hosts Chris Boyd and Jordan Birch at the 11th Annual Ugly Christmas Sweater party – billed as “the most fun you can have with your knitwear on” and credited (blamed?) for sparking a trend of ugly sweater parties across the globe. You’re promised a blast of holiday cheer with music by the Dr. Strangelove Band, Greg Drummond, and the Vancouver Sweet Soul Gospel Choir – plus caroling, eggnog,

giveaways and a visit from Santa. Trophies will be awarded to the ugliest sweater, most original sweater, best mustache, and group costume. Partial proceeds this year will help two cancer-stricken parents of young children, Katrina and Mark Bennett of Langley. It’s happening Friday, Dec. 21 at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, starting at 8 p.m. A mandatory Ugly Christmas Sweater dress code will be in effect. Tickets available at Ticketmaster. For more info, visit nowthatsugly.com, follow the @uglysweaterguys on Twitter, or like UglyChristmasSweaterParty on Facebook.

Santa parade to light up Cloverdale Organizers have added a longer parade route, more entries to keep up with the throngs of spectators By Jennifer Lang Cloverdale is the place to be his Sunday, when the 7th Annual Surrey’s Santa Parade of Lights will thrill and dazzle thousands in the historic town centre. It’s a traditional parade with floats, antique vehicles festooned with strings of Christmas lights, horses and more. There’s also an amazing lighted truck parade featuring big rigs, including 10 from Vancouver Island. Along with dignitaries, businesses, and various community groups, look for new additions, including various Girl Guides, Scouts, and even the championship Whalley Little League team. The parade will also see the unveiling of three vintage freight trucks that returned to Cloverdale earlier this year, thanks to the Surrey Heritage Society, which is working to open a new transportation heritage centre at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds. The parade gets underway at 5 p.m. Be sure to bring along donations of nonperishable food items and new, unwrapped toys. Donations for the Surrey Christmas Bureau and the Surrey Food Bank will be collected along the parade route. Don’t forget to drop by the Cloverdale Learning next to Hawthorne Square. It’s holding an open house, with kids’ crafts, face painting and ornament making. Along with hosting entertainment, food, and Christmas displays, Hawthorne Square will also act as a collection depot for dona-

SURREY’S SANTA PARADE OF LIGHTS WHEN: 5-6:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2 WHERE: Downtown Cloverdale; starts at Cloverdale Fairgrounds, right on 177B St., south to 58 Ave., west to 176 St., south to Hwy 10. Please bring along a donation for the Surrey Food Bank and Surrey Christmas Bureau.

tions to the Surrey Food Bank and the Surrey Christmas Bureau. Get there early – crowds will be lining the streets for the parade, rain or shine. Last year’s phenomenal turnout, an estimated 15,000 – so many there were more spectators than the actual parade route could

handle – convinced organizers to add more floats and lighted entries. The parade route has also doubled for 2012, marshaling at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds at 60 Avenue, turning right on 177B Street, south to 58 Avenue, and west to 176 Street. The parade then heads south again to

Highway 10. “We’ve added three additional blocks, based on the fact that last year we reached capacity,” says Paul Orazietti, executive director of the Cloverdale BIA, which co-organizes the parade with the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce. The arrival of the man of the hour – Santa Claus – is always a dramatic moment. Past years have seen the Jolly Old Elf seated inside a fairytale pumpkin carriage or atop a trailer. What will Santa be on this year? It’s a closely-guarded secret, but here’s a hint: it will be a fitting symbol of the transportation heritage theme that’s gaining ground in Cloverdale. The tree lighting ceremony takes place at approximately 6:30 p.m. at Hawthorne Square in the 5700-block of 176 Street. To volunteer, carol or build a float, contact the Cloverdale BIA at 604-576-3155 or the Cloverdale Chamber at 604-574-9802.

Holiday Greetings and Best Wishes

As this photo (pictured on facing page) from December 1963 proves, a visit with Santa has been a long-running Cloverdale tradition. Back in the 1960s, kids lined up at Duckworth’s department store to have their picture taken with Santa. Duckworth’s was located at 5741 176 Avenue, in the building that’s today home to the Cloverdale Learning Centre. Back in its heyday, Duckworth’s also offered free gift wrapping to customers. Today, the tradition of visiting with Santa in Cloverdale happily continues at the Clover Square Village mall.

From Dec. 5 to 23, come by to visit Santa Claus at his cute little white house with the red trim. He’ll be listening to children’s wish lists from noon to 4 p.m. daily. Parents, bring your own camera, and take your child’s picture with Santa. Prints (optional) are available right away. Donations for the Surrey Food Bank are gratefully accepted. A note for shoppers and sight-seers: Santa’s House is close to the pick-up and dropoff point for the free Saturday shuttle that’s operating on Saturdays in Cloverdale to Dec. 22.

It’s been 20 years since the inception of one of Langley’s biggest musical treasures. And to celebrate, Langley Community Chorus presents a fun-filled, anniversary-worthy holiday concert, Merry Fa, La, La. The concert will feature a blend of traditional, classic and contemporary carols and musical selections – from “Ave Maria” to “Zat You Santa Claus?”– that are sure to share the joy of the season with audiences. There’s still time for audiences to catch two upcoming performances – both matinees. The first is 3 p.m. this Sunday (Dec. 2) at Sharon United Church, 21562 Old Yale Road, Langley. The second venue is St. Dunstan’s Anglican Church at 3025 264 Street in Aldergrove, starting at 3 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 9. The choir has been around since 1992, when a small group of singers from Langley got together to form a choral group. They wanted to sing and have fun, as well as provide entertainment. They called themselves the Langley Community Chorus. Membership has grown from 14 to more than 80 voices this season, drawn from surrounding communities, including a contingent of nine singers from Surrey, and who are united by their love of singing.

From Page 13 Aldergrove. Tickets at the door half-hour before concert. Adults $15, students $10, under 6 free. More at www.langleychorus.org.

Movie screening for a good Claus A special visit from Santa himself is part of the fun at an upcoming family-friendly movie screening at the Clova Cinema. The Dec. 8 morning matinee – featuring a family Christmas movie (still to be announced) – gets underway at 10:30 a.m., but young movie-goers can get their picture taken taken with Santa Claus by donation, starting at 9:30 a.m. The photos will be emailed to you the next day, organizer Leeah George says. The special screening is a fundraiser for a cause that’s near and dear to her heart: The Ride to Conquer Cancer. She and her husband will be taking part.a Movie tickets are $5. complete the transformation, working in shifts of up to three hours. (A bad back prevents her from working longer.) Vrecko is so crazy about Christmas, her kids urged her to name her sweet-natured whippet “Santa’s Little Helper” – like the dog on the Simpson’s – but she settled on “Holly” instead. She’s looking forward to having her four sons and their wives and girlfriends over on Christmas Day. She admits her enthusiasm for Christmas decor may have damped theirs a little. “They like it…” she trails off momentarily, then adds: “I said, ‘What would you do if I didn’t do it? They

said, ‘We wouldn’t care.’ But I think they would. I really do.” Fortunately, the newer additions to the family – including a daughter-in-law from China and another from India – joined Vrecko for another favourite family tradition: girl’s night. Each woman painted a window according to a Christmas theme that meant something to them personally, hence the red paper lanterns in one pane and a colourful peacock in another. After Christmas, everything will be packed into boxes, and tucked away for another year. How much has she spent on decorations over the years? “I wouldn’t even hazard a guess.”

Members of The Versatiles take a well-deserved break during a rehearsal.

Versatile, and in demand Cloverdale’s merry band of golden aged entertainers Susie Francis and The Versatiles have another busy Christmas calendar planned, with upcoming shows across the region. The troup features performers in their 60s to their 90s, and specializes in musical comedy revues that appeal to a wide range of audiences, as their list of gigs demonstrates. This Friday, they’re doing a 45-minute performance at Chantrell Creek El-

ementary. Other dates include Dec. 9 at the Maple Ridge Legion, Dec. 13 at the Weatherby Pavillion at Peace Arch Hospital, Dec. 14 at the Cloverdale Recreation Centre as part of a Christmas party for seniors. And on Dec. 20, the Versatiles bring their old-fashioned blend of humour, music and melody to Brookswood Seniors Centre in Langley. For bookings, call 604-613-3116. – Cloverdale Reporter
