RCMP tracking vandals on rampage in community By Treena Mielke Vandals who broke into the community centre, smashed a window at the Shell gas station and broke into the high school could soon be apprehended and charged. Rimbey RCMP Const. Luke Halvorson said the forensic identification section has gathered evidence from the crime scenes. “We don’t have suspects, but we do have persons of interest,” he said. The incidents occurred between midnight and 5:30 a.m. Nov. 20. Recreation director Rick Kreklewich found the damage when he arrived at work Tuesday morning. “It was very disheartening to walk into,” he said. Kreklewich said the culprits smashed the front glass in the north door and stole a television that displays game scheduling and a laptop. The concession was also broken into, the cash register broken and food and a small amount of cash taken. Kreklewich said staff worked hard to clean the up the damage and keep operations running smoothly. Halvorson said a few items were smashed at the school. “It seemed they were breaking things just for the sake of breaking them,” he said.
In the early morning hours of Nov. 20, culprits broke into the Rimbey Community Centre and caused extensive damage by breaking several doors and panes of glass. They stole food, electronic and computer equipment along with a small amount of cash. The crime spree continued with the suspects breaking into and vandalizing the high school, then smashing glass at a local gas station. APN Photo

RCMP respond far too often to domestic violence calls By Treena Mielke Domestic violence. “It happens far too often”, says Rimbey RCMP Const. Luke Halvorson. “And if it happens once, chances are good it will happen again. “Domestic violence is far more prevalent than we want it to be. It can happen day or night. It’s usually worse at night and often the violence is fueled by alcohol.” Halvorson said the RCMP get three or four calls a week dealing with domestic issues, ranging from property disputes to child custody issues. “All of these have the potential to escalate to violence,” he said.
The yelling and screaming, punctuated by the sounds of someone being slapped, kicked or punched, may be loud enough to disturb the neighbors. That’s when the RCMP is usually called. “Typically it’s a neighbor or friend who calls. We always go to those calls with two members. Police officers have been killed responding to a domestic.” When members respond to a domestic call they obtain as much information as possible before they arrive at the call. “We find out things like how many other people are in the house, if there are weapons and the history of the peo-
Demand high for foster care By Treena Mielke The demand for foster families in Alberta continues to be urgent, as children from dysfunctional families continue to slip through the cracks and find themselves with no safe place to go. Marty Klipper, a foster parent recruiter for Crossroads Family Services, said in today’s society many families lack a support system for the times when family difficulties are being settled. “All too often families are now living isolated from their extended family and support circle. If someone isn’t able to parent, their kids used to go to their grandparents, or to an aunt and uncle’s home. Now, families who are having trouble often don’t have family nearby to turn to so the kinship options are not always there.” Foster families help fill the void for these children, who, through no fault of their own, find themselves without a safe place to live. “We need to find homes within our extended community (and people) who are able to care for these children,” he said. Crossroads, a not-for-profit, accredited agency that works under contract with the provincial government recruits, trains and supports foster parents so that the best possible care is provided to children in need. The primary goal of the organization is to provide a child with the strength of a fully loving and caring family while allowing them to grow alongside their biological family. “Only by working together and maintaining the healthy bonds that a child has with their biological family can the best outcome for a child be achieved, said Janet Ryan Newell, executive director of Crossroads. “We want to honour biological families in our attitude and by maintaining the family bonds for the children in care,” she said. However, even though foster care is designed to be a short-term option, sometimes it is not viable for the children to return to their biological family.
In such situations, some foster families go on to provide permanent care. Providing a foster home involves going through a screening process and a criminal record check. Home licensing requirements, character references and extensive training are also part of the process. While there is a tax-free per diem stipend provided to foster parents to support the child’s needs, the benefits cannot be measured in financial gain. “A foster parent needs to be a stable, reliable, caring human being able to work with both professionals and in some cases the child’s birth family,” said Klipper. The foster parent recruiter noted that all too often “what is broken in the foster care system” has made headlines, but he said there are many unpublished positive stories about how the system has worked. During the last 15 years Crossroads has cared for more than 3,800 children from the Greater Edmonton, central and northern Alberta communities. Currently more than 200 children are in the care of over 100 families but more foster families are needed and calls for placements come in daily. Anyone interested in finding out more about fostering through Crossroads please contact Cathy or Sarah at 780430-7715 or 1-877-430-7715 or visit their website at www.crossroadsfs.ca
“It happens far too often. And if it happens once, chances are good it will happen again.” Rimbey RCMP Const. Luke Halvorson ple involved.” When the officers arrive, they assess the severity of the call and if possible, talk to each person separately in an attempt to defuse the situation. Of course this approach only works if the people involved are rational and co-operative and sometimes it’s clear the best course of action is to charge the person involved. “If the victim has a black eye or bruises and has obviously been physically abused, we can charge the person even if the victim doesn’t want to lay a charge,” said Halvorson. The abuser, if charged is arrested, taken away in a police car and put in a holding cell for 24 hours. Release is dependent on conditions such as a bail hearing and not being allowed to have contact with the abused person. Domestic violence often shows itself as a long cycle that rears its ugly head over and over again. “They go back, break away and then go back over and over again. And when children are involved it’s especially sad,” said Halvorson. The police officer added in the majority of cases, the person being abused will make a statement against the abuser and then later want the charges dropped. “It takes a lot of courage to call and then stand by the charge.”

However, police who see obvious signs of abuse or have witnesses can take matters into their own hands. “If we have enough evidence we go ahead without the co-operation of the abused person,” said Halvorson. Anyone who is being physically abused needs to remove himself or herself from the situation and get help, said Halvorson. “They need to take of themselves and their children. That has to be a priority.” Domestic violence happens when adults are unable to control their anger. Anger management and drug and alcohol counselling may help individuals learn to deal with their issues. Halvorson noted children growing up in homes where domestic violence occurs may be abused themselves and may be prone to repeating the cycle. “We are a reflection of our parents, even if we don’t want to be.” The fact people are being abused and not notifying the authorities is disturbing, said Halvorson. “The really scary ones are the ones we never hear from, but we know they are out there.” Halvorson encourages anyone who is dealing with domestic violence to reach out and get help. There is a lot to be said for the simple things in life. Like coffee! And coffee with a friend is kind of like having a double-double without any worry about gaining weight. In fact, even if you have coffee with two Treena Mielke friends you’re good. On The Other Side They say meditation, exercise and giving thanks is good, too. But, me, I like wrapping my fingers around a steaming cup of black java, smiling across the table at a dear and special friend and proceeding to wisely waste a few precious minutes of my day. For me, this little visit to the place the world at large calls Tim’s is kind of like going to a therapist (aka) Tim’s. The sessions take about as long as it does to sip a medium double-double — a large takes too many swallows and interferes with our talking and a small is simply not big enough for us to feel the jolt of well being we are after. At the beginning of our sessions we allow ourselves to fret, complain and worry out loud. Then we tell each other how tired we are. “I was so tired yesterday, I could hardly keep my eyes open.” “I was comatose on the couch exactly three and a half minutes after completing the supper dishes.” “I didn’t even do the dishes,” said her companion (that would be me). We take a sip. Companionably. We ponder our problem, trying to figure out how to wake up. We can’t. And so we face it. We are destined to be tired. We take another sip. And, then we compliment each other on how good we look that morning. Usually, we love something about the other person, whether it be her scarf, her hair, her necklace or some item of her clothing. I’m thinking we should just get over with and say, “I love everything about you this morning,” but that would only warrant a small, black. And, then if we have run out of stuff to say about ourselves, which is highly unlikely, and we still haven’t drank all our morning brew, we start loving things about other customers we secretly scrutinize as they walk in. We love their hair or the way they dress or their beautiful smiles. By this time we are feeling pretty good and haven’t yet had time to be tired, so we hug, walk out the double doors feeling all good and warm and fuzzy because we are fortified not only with caffeine, but with friendship. And then I, because I have a tendency to forget things, inevitably turn around and come back in through the double doors to retrieve my phone or scarf or purse, or sometimes all three, and away I go again. And I happily drive away. This week, I am even happier to drive away because I have learned how to park backwards. It’s a very cool skill! Having coffee with a friend probably doesn’t rank up there with bucket list stuff or 50 things you want to do before you die. But, for me, it is, and always will be, one of the highlights of my grateful list. It’s an unexpected gift like sitting beside my daughter on the way to a medical appointment and sharing a laugh, not a pathetic little giggle, but one of those honest to goodness belly laughs. Or being lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the magical winter white beauty of hoar frost on the way to work. True, they are all only moments in time; quick and fleeting. But, perhaps that is all we need!
A return to Middle Ages After the loss of 10 million American lives in the Three-Mile Island calamity in 1979, the death of two billion in the Chernobyl holocaust in 1986, and now the abandonment of all of northern Japan following the death of millions in last year’s Fukushima nuclear catastrophe, it is hardly surprising that the world’s biggest users of nuclear power are shutting their plants down. Oh, wait a minute — This just in! Nobody died in the Three-Mile Island calamity, 28 plant workers were killed and 15 other people subsequently died of thyroid cancer in the Chernobyl holocaust, and nobody died in the Fukushima catastrophe. But they really are shutting their nuclear plants down. They have already shut them down in Japan. All of the country’s 50 nuclear reactors were closed for safety checks after the tsunami damaged the Fukushima plant, and only two have reopened so far. The government has now promised to close every nuclear power plant in Japan permanently by 2040. The new Japanese plan says that the country will replace nuclear energy with an eightfold increase in renewable energy (wind, solar, etc.), and “the development of sustainable ways to use fossil fuels.” But going from four per cent to 30 per cent renewables in the energy mix will take decades, and nobody has yet found an economically sustainable way to sequester the greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels. The truth is that as the Arctic sea ice melts and grain harvests are devastated by heat waves and drought, the world’s third-largest user of nuclear energy has decided to go back to emitting lots and lots of carbon dioxide. In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel has promised to close all the country’s nuclear reactors by 2022. She also promised to replace them with renewable power sources, of course, but the reality will be that the country burns more fossil fuels. Even France, which has taken 80 per cent of
Gwynne Dyer Guest Columnist
its energy from nuclear power for decades with no problems, is joining the panic. President Francois Hollande’s new government has promised to lower the country’s dependence on nuclear energy to 50 per cent of the national energy mix. He had to do it, even though closing down the nuclear plants will lead to a sharp rise in greenhouse gas emissions in precisely the period when the race to cut emissions and avoid a rise in average global temperature of more than two degrees C will be won or lost. Nuclear energy is a kind of witchcraft, and the public is frightened. Fortunately, their superstitious fears are largely absent in more sophisticated parts of the world. Only four new nuclear reactors are under construction in the European Union, and only one in the United States, but there are 61 being built elsewhere. Over two-thirds of them are being built in the BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India and China), where economies are growing fast and governments are increasingly concerned about both pollution and climate change. But it’s not enough to outweigh the closure of so many nuclear plants in the developed world: the price of nuclear fuel has collapsed in the last four years, and uranium mine openings and expansions have been cancelled. More people die from coal pollution each day than have been killed by 50 years of nuclear power operations – and that’s just from lung disease. If you include future deaths from global warming due to burning fossil fuels, closing down nuclear power stations is sheer madness. Welcome to the Middle Ages. Last, but certainly not least, Carl Ziegler. Monday, Nov. 12 was a holiday for some businesses. I had forgotten about that and went to get some prescription medication for my grandmother. When I got there I saw they were closed. I turned around to leave and who pulls up but Carl and his family. He asked me what I needed and I said I would come back tomorrow since they were closed. Without hesitation he told me to come in and he would get it for me. He most certainly did not have to do that but he did because he is a generous, caring man who cares about his customers. I read far too many letters complaining about Rimbey or its residents. So again I say I am proud to live in a town with such selfless people From the bottom of my heart I thank you. Emily Breton

Keyera project will expand plant’s processing capacity By Treena Mielke A $210 million project in the works at Keyera Corp. Rimbey Gas Plant will bump up the plant’s processing capacity and may result in additional temporary jobs for area residents. The project includes the installation of a new turbo expander unit with the capacity to handle 400 million cubic feet of natural gas per day and the construction of a 34-kilometre, six-inch diameter ethane pipeline to connect to the Alberta Ethane Gathering System. The new expander will allow Keyera to recover more than 90 per cent of the ethane and other natural gas liquids from the raw gas stream at the Rimbey Gas Plant. John Cobb, vice-president Investor Relations for Keyera, said the expander unit and pipeline is being built in response to the tremendous level of activity in the Rim-
bey area. “The geology is very exciting,” he said. “There is a tremendous level of activity. Keyera is a service business and we value added services and being responsive to our customers’ needs.” “We are excited about this expansion opportunity,” said David Smith, president and chief operating officer of Keyera. “With increased liquids-rich drilling activity in the area, raw gas processing capacity with deep-cut liquids extraction capability is in demand.” Cobb said the project is now in the planning stages with start up expected in late 2014. During the construction phase, expected to peak in around the first quarter of 2014, about 200 tradespeople will be working on site to complete the project. Once the project is in place, employee numbers will return to status quo.

Songwriter shares love of holiday season with her latest CD By Treena Mielke
Christmas truly is her favorite time of the year and she is looking forward to being in the heart of Alberta where she said the cold and snow brings its own special kind of beauty. In keeping with the spirit of the season, Bergeron’s latest CD, The Gift, brings with it the flavor of a down home country Christmas. The CD features 12 tracks, nine of which have been written by Bergeron.
Debbie Bergeron loves Christmas and is pleased to be able to share her love of the season through her own special talent of singing and song writing. The songwriter/recording artist/producer, who recently moved to Rimbey from Hope, B.C., will spend Christmas here surrounded by family and friends. It is an exciting time for her as

Lacombe County Council has given first reading to Bylaw No. 1165/12, the purpose of which is to dispose of a strip of Municipal Reserve on Lot 29 Block 6 Plan 856MC in the Birch Bay Subdivision on the north west side of Gull Lake. The reserve that is proposed to be disposed of will then be reinstated in the middle of Lot 29 as part of a subdivision application to consolidate Lot 29 with Lot 1 and Lot 28. The music offers a variety of styles such as swing, two-step, lullabies and ballads. It also includes the traditional Christmas carol, O Holy Night. Moving to Rimbey has been a major change for Bergeron but she said the people here have been friendly and caring and already she feels like it is home. “I feel like I am very lucky to be here. It’s easy to meet people and everyone is very willing to help and are so friendly.” She is looking forward to meeting other musicians/songwriters in the area and would be more than happy to perform at local promotional events. She has even stopped by the Rimbey Drop In Centre to sing for the seniors. For Bergeron, who began singing at the age of four when her Aunt Norma set up her amp and microphone in the centre of the living room and encouraged the little girl to sing, writing songs and singing is as natural as breathing. She writes from the heart. “I write what I feel.” She recorded her debut CD, Makin A Connecion in Nashville in 1998 at the Gatlin Brothers Studio. “It was a dream come true to go to

Her second CD, She Drives, produced by Mesh Studios in Burnaby, B.C., received rave reviews in Canada and European countries and was nominated for Album of the Year through the British Columbia Country Music Association. Winfield Legion to receive some federal funding Wetaskwin MP Blaine Calkins recently announced federal funding for interior upgrades to the Royal Canadian Legion building in Winfield under the Harper Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF). “Our government, through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund, is continuing to support communities across Canada,” said Calkins. “By improving amenities such as this, we are helping to boost economic activity and maintain a higher quality of life for Canadians.” Federal funding of $30,300 will assist with several interior upgrades to the Legion Hall, including renovations to the kitchen and other structural enhancements. “The Winfield Legion was formed on Oct. 6, 1947. We currently have a membership of 50 including two Second World War veterans, Korean War veterans, as well as many other retired or still active military service personnel,” said said Al Farmer, branch president. “The original legion building was built in 1934 as a home. Through the strong commitment of our local community we were able to re-build the legion facility. CIIF funding will allow us to complete the interior of the building so that we can continue to meet our goals and support our local veterans.”

Injuries a factor in Spartans finals loss By Amelia Naismith
The Spartans’ Scott MacOnochie races down the field, attempting to avoid the Drayton Valley Warriors during Rimbey’s last chance to make it to the provincial finals. Their strong, controlled semifinals victory was held in Lacombe on Nov. 20. Photo by Amelia Naismith
The Rimbey Spartans lost only one football game this season —42-36 against the Millwoods Christian Royals in the provincial championship game. The team played an incredibly strong season against other competitive teams. “I think we had a really good season. We were eight and zero,” said Spartans linebacker Tyler Wurmlinger. Wurmlinger attributes part of the team’s success to head coach Bill Bramfield. “He’s very supportive; he always gives us pep talks.” Bramfield helped the boys with their plays and always showed them where they needed to be. According to Wurmlinger, Bramfield spent hours each week reviewing game videos so he’d be able to help the boys improve their game. Teammate Garry Fehr agreed success started with the coaches’ effort. “All four of our coaches were always there for us; they taught us everything we know.” And there may have been a lot to teach: this year the Spartans had 15 players who hadn’t played football before. The last couple of games before the championships went well for the Spartans. They defeated the Hannah Hawks 48-6 on their home turf. However, despite the huge lead they came off with the team and Bramfield took to the Nov. 20 semifinal game in
Lacombe ready to play hard to earn another win. “We played a very strong game,” said Wurmlinger. Rimbey defeated Drayton Valley’s Frank Maddock Warriors 3422. “That was a really awesome game for us,” added Fehr. “Everybody played strong and hard; it was pretty close.” During the semifinals the Spartans took the field and control of the game despite freezing weather. While their journey to the 6-man Alberta Bowl Provincial Final, held in Edmonton Nov. 23, ended favorably, that final game did not. At one point the Spartans where dominating with a 22-6 lead. However after two Spartans’ linebackers were injured, one of them being Wurmlinger, who injured his knee, the game started to go downhill. The final score was 42-36. “I thought it went very well,” said Wurmlinger. “They (the Millwoods Christian Royals) just got the last points on us.” Wurmlinger recalls there were a couple of interceptions by the Royals and then two Spartans players suffered injuries. “That’s pretty much what got us.” Fehr added that because of the injuries, substitutions were brought in who normally wouldn’t play at those positions. Despite the injuries Wurmlinger feels the Spartans’ offense was strong during the game, but so was the Royals’ defence. “Our defence was good, until the injuries.” During the first half of the game Rimbey’s defence was able to hold their opponents back, but during the second half the Royals’ offence stepped up. “Defence was good” agreed Fehr. Like his teammate, Fehr thought the game turned around when the injuries occurred. However, despite the challenges they now faced on the field the Spartans’ continued to play with the same spirit they had all ! season. “We kept on goR ing and fought until the YEA end,” said Wurmlinger.

Tap9 releases debut CD at Blackfalds party By Amelia Naismith As individuals they performed all over North America and have recorded on many albums. Now that they’ve come together, Tap9 held a release party in Blackfalds last weekend to introduce the world to their collaborative debut CD, Tap9. The central Alberta band consists of Tony Hoffmann, Steve Tanner, Orion Donison, Brad Harsent, Grant Harder and Sheryl Kreil. Tap9 came together in 2010 and while they can be defined as alternative rock their style and skills range from rock to jazz to country. “It’s kind of exciting,” said Tony Hoffmann, vocals and guitar. The band’s mem-
bers had performed with each other before in a variety of settings, from cover bands to larger jazz ensembles. “We just decided to come together because we all enjoy writing original music,” said Hoffmann. Ponoka was given a taste of the band at this year’s Chamber of Commerce business awards banquet, and once the band began to play people of all ages couldn’t help but dance. “We had a lot of fun doing that,” said Hoffmann, who also said he was thankful for the opportunity. Tap9’s first released song is Alberta Home and the album was released in September.
Alberta Home was released in 2011 and spread not only through Alberta but also across Canada, the United States and Europe. Tap9 was recorded over the past year at Ma-Me-O Music Records in Pigeon Lake and is already available on Itunes and where music is sold. “I don’t know if people know who we are but if they call us we can get a CD to them,” said Hoffmann. However, the band is in possession of a limited number or CDs. Hoffmann said actually making and producing the album was a fantastic experience. From the release party the band is hoping for more exposure. “Hopefully people like us,” he said.

Junior girls volleyball team wins CWAJHAA tournament Submitted Rimbey Junior/Senior High School has the best junior girls’ volleyball team in central Alberta. The big win came in the CWAJHAA tournament in Delburne on Nov. 17. It was a thrilling end to their season that was filled with difficulties, disappointment and finally, an amazing win to be top dogs. The season started with a solid team, with nine girls returning from last year, three first-year players, and second-year coach Katelyn Fesyck. Difficulty started early in the season when Coach Fesyck had to relinquish her duties under doctor’s orders as she is soon to give birth to a set of twins. Injury, illness and absenteeism resulted in inconsistencies throughout the year. The first three tournaments of the year resulted in a third-, second- and first-place finish under the guidance assistant coach Sherilyn Semenyna. The league playoffs were next where they came second, losing to Lacombe Christian. At the qualifying tournament for the CWAJHAA, they came second again, losing in the final to Ponoka’s
St. A Queens. Fortunately, the top two advanced into the final tournament. At the final tournament, eight teams (two groups of four) were vying for the top spot. Rimbey went into the tournament missing four experienced players. As a result, Megan McFadden and Laura Lee, two players from Rimbey’s junior B volleyball team, were recruited to support the short bench. Rimbey emerged from their division in round robin play undefeated with a record of 3-0. They played Ponoka St A Queens in the semi final game where they were again victorious. The final game came down to Rimbey against Lacombe Christian. Rimbey won the first set but in the second the tides turned in Lacombe’s favor and they took the second. Down 7-2 in the final set, Coach Semenyna called a crucial time out. She rallied the girls on the floor and upon their return, momentum swung their way and the girls fought their way to victory with a 15-8 win. Thank you to the parents, grandparents, siblings and fans who supported the team throughout the year.
