Christmas: A camera. A bit shy at first with a visitor talking to his mom Krystie in their Clayton Heights home, the sevenyear-old becomes interested in a second flash unit going off on his couch during a family portrait session, and he asks how it works. “He’s so smart, it’s crazy,” say Krystie, relaxing at home after spending the week with her son at B.C. Children’s Hospital. He is indeed ahead of the curve academically, being in Grade 2 and keeping up with his grades despite being in and out of the hospital, battling cancer, since the age of three. He’s undergone multiple surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation, all sprinkled with increasingly short-lived remissions of Stage III neuroblastoma. His mother recites the drama over just the past couple of years: Remission, relapse, remission, relapse… and Gage takes one form of medicine or another every day. Early on, tumours on his spine even resulted in paralysis, and Gage underwent a year of physiotherapy to learn how to walk again following major surgery. Last summer, while he was doing better, Gage came back beaming from a one-week stay at the Canadian Cancer Society’s Camp Goodtimes. See LIGHTS / Page 10

CLIMATE CHANGE activists are vowing to fight plans to build a new coal export terminal on the Fraser River in Surrey and expand an existing one in North Vancouver. Fraser Surrey Docks has applied to build a terminal in Surrey that would bring in thermal coal from Wyoming via the BNSF railway that runs through White Rock and Delta. It proposes to export four million tonnes of coal a year initially, with potential to Lois Jackson double that later. Meanwhile, Neptune Terminals aims to increase its exports of B.C.-mined metallurgical coal used in steelmaking from 12 million to 18 million tonnes. To activists like Kevin Washbrook, of the group Voters Taking Action on Climate Change,

Surrey pioneer passes away

It will be a colourful evening in Surrey this Sunday, as two holiday parades take place. The Central City Big Rigs for Kids will see decorated trucks roll from Cloverdale through Newton to North Surrey’s Holland Park, while the jolly old elf himself will make an appearance at the Santa Claus Parade in downtown Cloverdale.

teacher has died. May Isabell Sullivan, wife of Jim Sullivan, died peacefully and surrounded by family at Zion Park Manor in Cloverdale on Nov. 22. She was 98 years old. Sullivan spent most of her life in Surrey, but served overseas as an ambulance driver with her sister Margie during the Second World War. She taught for almost 30 years at Cloverdale Catholic School, and prior to that, in the public school system. “May,” “Mum,” “Granny,” (and “Mrs. Sullivan” to her many students) was a kind, calm, steady person with quiet resolve, her son Brian Sullivan said. Her fatherin-law settled the area around what is now 152 Street and 64 Avenue. May Sullivan was a loving wife, devoted mother, and May Sullivan caring friend, Brian said. Her house was a gathering place for family and friends. Everyone was always made to feel welcome and make themselves at home – and they did. Sullivan was known for her sweet disposition and a sense of humour. She is survived by six children, 15 grandchildren and 14 greatgrandchildren. A memorial service takes place at Precious Blood Roman Catholic Church, 17475 59 Ave., on Friday (Nov. 30) at 11 a.m.

Big rigs light up for holidays; Santa comes to Cloverdale Dec. 2 festivities benefit the Surrey Food Bank and Surrey Christmas Bureau

Black Press THe THIRd-aNNual Central City Big Rigs for Kids, also known as the Lighted Truck Parade, will wind its way through the streets of Surrey on Sunday, Dec. 2. This year, the trucks will leave Cloverdale around 5:45 p.m., travel along Highway 10 to King George Boulevard, and then head north to Old Yale Road, where they will park. The trucks are expected to go by the Newton viewing area (Save-On Foods at 73 Avenue and King George Boulevard) between 6:10-6:20 p.m. and arrive at Holland Park (13428 Old Yale Road) by 6:40 p.m. Spectators are encouraged to vote for their favourite trucks by donating loonies into the containers located by each truck. The “Fan Favourite” will be awarded a trophy. All donations will benefit the Surrey Food Bank and Surrey Christmas Bureau, and both organizations will be on-site to collect canned food and toys. The North Surrey Lions Club will be selling hot chocolate and hot dogs. Last year, this event generated more than $5,000 which was distributed between the two charities. The entertainment at Holland Park begins at 6 p.m. The trucks will be

Santa comes to Cloverdale The seventh-annual Surrey Santa Claus parade takes place in downtown Cloverdale on Dec. 2 from 5-6:30 p.m. Santa will guide his sleigh to town with help from the special guest truck elves from Big Rigs for Kids, colourful floats, antique cars, trucks, boats and horses. Cloverdale parade organizers ask that you bring a donation to the parade for either the Surrey Food Bank or the Surrey Christmas Bureau. The parade route is expanded this year. At 5 p.m., it leaves the Cloverdale Fairgrounds at 176A Street, heads east on 60 Avenue, turns right on 177B Street, heads south to 58 Avenue and then turns west to 176 Street. The parade then heads south again to Highway 10. At the end of the parade, Santa returns to Hawthorne Square for a brief tree-lighting ceremony. SMH flood could cost more than $2 million Damage to MRI still not known; ER expected to reopen next week by Jeff Nagel THe CoST of the Nov. 19 flood at Surrey

Memorial Hospital’s emergency department is now estimated at between $2 and $3 million. That figure includes restoring damage to the building and some medical equipment, replacing lost supplies, and funding extra staff time.

Fraser Health spokesman Roy ThorpeDorward said the initial tally does not include any damage to the ER’s MRI machine, which is still to be assessed by a technician. “That is still the big unknown for us at this point,” he said, adding a new MRI costing “a few million” could more than double the cost of the flood. Water burst through the back wall of the ER after an excavator broke a water main at the SMH expansion construction site. Fraser Health officials expect insurance held by the subcontractor responsible for the break will cover damage, but that’s still to be worked out. The hospital itself is also fully insured. Thorpe-Dorward said the ER is

expected to fully reopen early next week and said restoration work is progressing well. Royal Columbian, Peace Arch and Langley Memorial hospitals have felt the most impact from the diversion of ER patients who would normally go to Surrey. Royal Columbian is running with about 22 per cent more patients in its ER. Thorpe-Dorward said all hospitals west of Abbotsford are now helping pick up some of the overflow from SMH, including Delta, Eagle Ridge and Ridge Meadows hospitals. Patients arriving on their own at SMH’s ER are being redirected to the nearby Jim Pattison Outpatient Surgery and Care Centre, which is acting as a temporary ER.

The port has also notified nearby residents. Crandles said the port is doing a technical review that will consider environmental and

An open letter was issued Wednesday opposing the coal export plans, with signatures from leading B.C. climate change experts Andrew Weaver and Marc Jaccard, as well as dozens of environmental groups and activists. They’re calling for a full public review. But unlike plans for the Enbridge or Kinder Morgan oil pipelines, neither regulators nor politicians can stand in the way. The proposals will both be decided by Port Metro Vancouver managers with no formal public meetings – voluntary or otherwise – or approvals by other agencies. “This is a crazy idea,” Washbrook said, adding Metro Vancouver coal exports may soon emit more carbon to the atmosphere than all the oil that would be exported through Enbridge’s proposed Northern Gateway pipeline. “This is an issue of international importance and it can’t be decided by a handful of staff at the port.” The Fraser Surrey Docks plan would see coal loaded onto barges, which would then sail to Texada Island for transfer to deep-sea freighters. Delta Mayor Lois Jackson said she’s “very concerned” about the proposal and said Delta council has summoned port representatives to discuss it. “I think the coal dust is something people are really concerned about,” she said.

The Fraser Surrey Docks proposal calls for one coal train a day arriving and loading directly to barge, without coal being stockpiled on site. Crandles said Fraser Surrey Docks is currently underused, so fewer trains have been going there than in the past and the increase for coal exports wouldn’t come close to returning rail traffic to historic peak levels. More coal trains to Neptune in North Vancouver would come through the region via the CP or CN rail lines.

More crackdown needed on firecrackers Colourful i would like to add my two cents’ worth (with

inflation $1.50) to the fireworks debate. I have no problems with holiday celebrations or fireworks, but over the last few years I have noticed an alarming trend. As early as three weeks before Halloween in my neighbourhood, the firecrackers have gotten louder and louder and continued well into November, with some being set off last weekend.

As I consider the fact that fireworks in general in Surrey are illegal without permits, this disturbs me. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy fireworks on holidays, but this year the firecrackers could be classified as bombs or explosives, as quite a few of them actually shook my house. I understand that it is impossible for the police to check out all reports, but there has to be something done.

Fireworks need to be limited to a maximum of three days per celebration and more policing is needed. I had a dog that was so afraid of the fireworks that we had to sedate him on Halloween and feed him Gravol for a week before and a week after, and after a few years, he had a heart attack. bia will have the infamous distinction of being the only Canadian province that still allows tobacco to be sold in pharmacies and stores that contain a pharmacy. Pharmacies are places where people go for health care, not to purchase a deadly product that, when used as directed, is still the numberone cause of preventable death and disease in the province. The argument is often made that forcing pharmacies to stop selling tobacco will economically hurt small business – “the little guy” – the independently owned and operated neighbourhood pharmacy. This argument is a fallacy as the vast majority of those independently owned and operated pharmacies in B.C. have already made the voluntary and health-promoting decision not to sell tobacco. The over 400 pharmacies and stores that contain a pharmacy that still continue to sell tobacco in B.C. are primarily large chains stores, whose corporate head offices are placing their own business interests above the health interests of their customers and communities. We, along with our fellow health-related organizations the College of Pharmacists of B.C., the B.C. Medical Association, and the Canadian Cancer Society, B.C. & Yukon, believe it’s time the provincial government did the right thing

mayor and council to ask about any bylaws concerning sidewalk snowclearing. At that time we were assured that businesses and homeowners were responsible for clearing the sidewalk adjacent to their property. We were also told that in the event of future snowfalls, bylaw fines would be issued for failure to do so. This past winter, while road clearing for traffic and business parking lots happened immediately, often overnight, many sidewalks remained impassible for over a week. Parents pushing strollers and elderly folk trying to get around with no other option than using the street risked being hit by cars. This past February, April and June we repeatedly contacted city hall to see how many fines had been meted out for failure to clear snow. With winter approaching we have recently repeatedly contacted Surrey’s bylaw office to find out the total fines issued – to no avail. We suspect the reason no one from Surrey city hall has responded is that no tickets were issued and no fines were collected. Unless folks are actually encouraged through fines to do so, we can expect each snowfall to continue to be far more difficult and dangerous for pedestrians to transit in than it is for the almighty car drivers. Perhaps if Mayor Dianne Watts was getting around by shank’s mare and bus this would more of a priority. Lance Read, Surrey

it iS very difficult for me to visualize the grief and tragedy that Surrey RCMP Const. Adrian Oliver’s family members are suffering after his death in a car accident. However, I am a little surprised at the media coverage of his demise. At least three times as many construction workers die “on the job” as law enforcement officers. When a construction worker dies “in the line of duty,” the death does not receive the headlines that Const. Oliver’s death received, and yet the tragedy is equally tragic for the person’s surviving family. At worst, the construction worker’s death will receive no media coverage or, at best, a paragraph in a newspaper. I have trouble understanding why the death of a police officer ranks as more important than the death of a construction worker. When a person takes on a position in law enforcement, he/she and their family must realize that there is an element of danger in the job, but in any case the job is relatively safe as there are very few incidents. In either case, the surviving family will have to make a very difficult transition in their lives and my sympathy goes out to the family of any person who dies on the job. Stewart Calder Surrey

RCMP seeking wanted woman Warrant for Kyla Murphy Black Press Surrey Mounties are requesting public assistance

in finding a wanted person. Kyla Murphy is currently wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant for auto theft, possession of stolen property, and possession of a weapon. She is also wanted on an outstanding witness warrant for a separate incident. Investigators believe she is currently avoiding apprehension in the Surrey area. Murphy is described as a 22-year-old Caucasian female, 5’6”, 115 lbs, with blonde hair Kyla Murphy and blue eyes, and a tattoo of a star on her left forearm. House fire Blaze leaves five homeless

dramatic fire destroyed their North Surrey home Monday night. The house at 137 Street and 97A Avenue was fully engulfed with flames by the time firefighters arrived. The fire originated in the garage area in the rear of the home, where there was a suite. The blaze was extinguished fairly quickly, but damage was extremely extensive and the home will have to be torn down. Neighbours told CTV News they believe the home was previously renovated and was used as a rooming house. The owner was not inside at the time. Fire officials don’t yet know how the fire started.

Volunteers and donors for the display for 2012 have included RONA, Tri-Tech Machine, Northstar Signs and Lighting, and Derek Strokon of Sun Life Financial. Krystie says that any donations are appreciated at the Christmas display, given the lack of awareness of childhood cancers and the disproportionately meagre funding for research and treatment when compared to adult cancers. According to the Canadian Cancer Society’s (CCS) website, the CCS is the largest funder of childhood and adolescent cancer research in the charitable sector, contributing 23 per cent of total funding. The B.C. and Yukon division of the CCS contributes more than 40 per cent of that funding through donations from the annual Cops for Cancer fundraiser. weekend are now all in stable condition. On Saturday, Nov. 24 at about 11:30 a.m., a car stalled on the Alex Fraser Bridge, and then a second car slammed into the back of it. Both drivers were out of their cars for a short period, then got back in, when a taxi carrying a passenger smashed into the rear car. One person was initially in critical condition, and has now been stabilized. The accident underlines road safety procedures after an accident, police say.

Cpl. Robert McDonald of the RCMP’s Lower Mainland Traffic Services said people shouldn’t try to get out of their cars after an accident unless it’s completely safe to do so. Those conditions are extremely rare, such as if the car is right beside a sidewalk and the occupants can climb out the passenger side onto the sidewalk. Any other time, McDonald said, drivers should stay in their vehicle with seatbelts on and call 911. If on the highway, get over to the curb lane and out of traffic, he said. The investigation into the accident is continuing, and Mounties haven’t determined whether or not charges will be forthcoming.

Earl Marriott Secondary (EMS) has failed to fix overcrowding problems at the South Surrey school, teachers say. And the situation, notes a letter to the school’s Parent Advisory Council, could put students at risk. “With over 500 extra students, many staff at Earl Marriott Secondary believe the safety of students may be compromised in the event of a real emergency,” writes Mark Figueira, who sent the letter last month on behalf of a staff committee. But while school officials agree there are challenges, they disagree with the suggestion the situation is endangering students. Principal Peter Johnston said the situation would be even worse without the flex schedule. It was implemented at EMS last year, when the school day was extended to five blocks from four. Junior grades attend in the first four blocks – from 8 a.m. to 2:10 p.m. – and most seniors in the final four, from 9:24 a.m. to 3:34 p.m. According to Figueira’s letter, there are several problems associated with trying to educate 1,950 students in a space designed for 1,500 that have not been addressed by the new schedule. The volume of students moving in the halls during classchange is “overwhelming,” he writes. As well, it is “virtually impossible” for janitorial staff to keep the school clean; there is not enough lab, home-economics, physical education or library space; and, if a student becomes ill, there is no bed for them to lie down while they wait for a ride home because the former firstaid room was converted into a handicapped washroom.

Student learning is compromised and the sense of community amongst students and staff has also been lost, Figueira writes. Relief is still years away. The provincial government approved the purchase of land last year for a new secondary school in Grandview to reduce the congestion at Earl Marriott. The site was acquired in the summer, and school district offi-

He said the flex schedule has succeeded in reducing some of the pressure on school resources. “It’s not ideal (but) there is nothing short of a new school to address it,” Strachan said. “There

Surrey council was to discuss the issue at a land-use meeting Monday afternoon (Nov. 26). Saturday, transforming traffic conditions for Surrey and the region. The new Port Mann Bridge, running with the usual five lanes now, will begin carrying eight lanes of traffic on Dec. 1, relieving a key congestion bottleneck that has plagued drivers for years. “Drivers will be able to cut their commutes in half,” predicts B.C. Transportation Minister Mary Polak. “Some drivers will have an extra hour a day to spend time with family and friends, rather than wasting their days in traffic.” Port Mann/Highway 1 project officials say they’ve simulated a commute for “Cindy,” a Surrey resident living in Anniedale who commutes to Brunette and Lougheed in Coquitlam. She should see her travel time drop from 35 minutes each way to just over 10 minutes, accordprojections. Mary Polak ingIntoanother example, a delivery truck driver based in Coquitlam near United Boulevard and Lougheed Highway is expected to make his regular run to Guildford in just 10 minutes, compared to 20 now. The convenience won’t be free.

monthly pass – $75 a month while the halfprice toll is in effect, rising to $150 a year from now. How residents respond is yet to be seen. There are fears drivers who refuse to pay the tolls will clog the free Pattullo Bridge, Alex Fraser Bridge and even the Massey Tunnel.

Port Mann/Highway 1 project officials predict the net diversion will be modest, with significant numbers of drivers coming back to the corridor who have shunned it for years because of heavy congestion. The northeast section of the South Fraser Perimeter Road (SFPR) also opens at the same time, providing a speedier route through Surrey to the Pattullo Bridge for motorists seeking a free, untolled crossing. But since westbound traffic would have to get on the SFPR at 176 Street, much toll-averse traffic will instead wind its way through Surrey roads to get to the Pattullo, and then worsen already heavy congestion in New Westminster. Some drivers are dead-set against having to pay to drive over a bridge and some have banded together on social media to boycott the new Port Mann. Other observers are more optimistic, saying the province’s decision to offer half-price tolls as well as other incentives to sign up for TReO should ensure many drivers at least try out the system. That may convince many to stick with it despite the cost once they’re hooked by the ease of the new corridor. The province has promised the tolls will end on the bridge in 2050 when the $3.3-billion highway improvement project is fully paid off. But some experts say one the bridge’s legacies may have been to create a perception of unfair treatment – with tolls applied to bridges in just one part of the region – igniting an ongoing debate about “fair tolling” reforms that could see all major roads eventually tolled.

The Port Mann will be Metro Vancouver’s second toll bridge, after the Golden Ears Bridge, which is run by TransLink. The full project is not strictly a bridge. The highway itself has been expanded and dozens of overpasses have been rebuilt or added along the corridor. HOV lanes now extend all the way to Langley, easing the commute for those who are able to car-pool. HOV lane users who register as such and travel during peak hours also get a 25-per-cent toll discount. Heavy trucks that travel overnight get a 50-per-cent discount. Work on the western sections of Highway 1 in Burnaby won’t be complete until the end of 2013. About the same time, the final two lanes of the new bridge will be connected, providing 10 lanes, five in each direction. Two lanes each way will be for general purpose traffic, one will be for HOV users and buses and two more will be dedicated local traffic lanes to handle the large number of motorists who go between Surrey and Coquitlam. Those local traffic lanes will be separated from the rest of the freeway traffic, so Surrey-Coquitlam motorists won’t have to merge or potentially be snarled in other freeway traffic troubles. They’ll effectively have their own bridge linking those cities.

The old Port Mann Bridge is to be dismantled in 2014. Buses will also run over the bridge for the first time in decades, after the announcement of the #555 ExpressBus from Langley’s Carvolth park-and-ride to Braid Station in New Westminster.

How you’ll pay Drivers won’t have to stop at a toll booth or fumble for coins to pay to cross the new toll bridge. Electronic tolling gantries above the bridge will detect the TReO windshield decal of most frequent users, automatically billing their linked credit card or bank account and sending them a statement at the end of each month. TReO users will get the $1.50 half-price toll for one full year. Those who don’t sign up for a free decal will be detected by licence plate cameras and billed that way. If they don’t pay within seven days, an invoice will be mailed and they’ll have to pay an extra $2.30 processing fee. Those who refuse to pay will ultimately be denied insurance and licence renewals by ICBC and the province says it has agreements with other provinces and states to recoup unpaid tolls from out-of-province drivers.

Operation Red Nose up and running Volunteer-run service in Surrey and Langley offers drivers â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and their vehicles â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a safe way home

ever to find a safe ride home this holiday season. Operation Red Nose (ORN) volunteers are busy hitching up their sleighs in almost every city in the Lower Mainland, with service due to begin in Langley-Surrey this weekend (Nov. 30 and Dec. 1). This year, Burnaby and New Westminster have joined the program

which offers clients a safe ride home (or wherever they want to go) in their own vehicles. The process is simple: Clients call for a ride and the first available vehicle comes to them. A designated driver chauffeurs the client in the clientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vehicle while two more volunteers in an escort vehicle follow them to their destination. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all done at no charge, but ORN volunteers do accept donations on behalf of the charity

that is running the show. In Langley-Surrey, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the Langley Gymnastics Foundation. Since it began, ORN Langley has covered the Langley-Surrey-White Rock area. Over the years, more communities have introduced their own programs and with the addition of Burnaby and New Westminster, â&#x20AC;&#x153;you can pretty much go anywhere in the Lower Mainland,â&#x20AC;? said Garry Geisler, who has volunteered with the Langley

group since its first season 14 years ago and served as co-ordinator for most of that time. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You can party in Richmond and get all the way back to Chilliwack,â&#x20AC;? he said, though youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll probably meet a few new people along the way. When clients want passage from one community to another, a driver will take them as far as the municipal boundary where theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be met by a team from the next city, and so on,

until they reach their destination â&#x20AC;&#x201C; whether thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in Abbotsford or Lions Bay. Vancouver is the last holdout, Geisler said, though he is confident they will come on board. In its early years, a big part of the challenge for ORN volunteers was getting the word out about the service, which was still unfamiliar to a lot of people, said Geisler. These days, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pretty well known, but volunteers still spend the early

part of each evening spreading the word and reminding people to plan ahead for a safe ride home. Joined by their mascot, a fuzzy yellow reindeer named Rudy, they spend the early part of each Friday and Saturday evening making the rounds of banquet halls and bars, saying hello and dropping off business cards. If a plan is already in place to use the service, people are more likely to stick to it than if it is suggested to them once theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve over-imbibed, Geisler explained. Although they already have a number of volunteer drivers, escorts and navigators ready to go,

there is always room for more â&#x20AC;&#x201D; especially on the weekend before Christmas, said Geisler. Anyone who would like to help out is asked to download a form from the Red Nose website at rednose.bc.ca. Volunteers are also required to undergo a background check with the RCMP. For those considering using the service, it will be offered every Friday and Saturday night in December and on New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Eve. Calls will be taken from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. each night and rides will be given until every caller has been safely delivered. Call 604-5320888 to arrange a ride.

The Hawks handled the North Island Silvertips 9-3 Saturday night, then played the same team to a 3-3 tie Sunday morning. Both games were at the Langley Events Centre. Hawks, dropping Valley West to sixth place in the 13-team league for elite 15-17 players. The Hawks scored three times in each period Saturday night, leading 30 and 6-3 at the period breaks. Eric Callegari of Langley and Surrey’s Matt Bradley netted two goals each for Valley West, with Jakob Stukel of Cloverdale, Josh Pollock of Langley, and Surrey’s Cole Plotnikoff, Darien Craighead and Spencer Unger scoring once each. (Cloverdale), and Surrey’s Rhett Wilcox and Ian Bennett had two assists each. Stukel tallied twice and Craighead scored once in Sunday’s contest. Now at 8-7-3 (won-loss-tied) on the season, Valley West will play their next four games against two teams at the bottom of the standings. Haunted by humour

Fraser Valley Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s original, family-friendly musical pantomime, Phantom of the Panto, appears on the Surrey stage

aston Leroux, original author of The Phantom of the Opera, might be turning in his grave. And Baron Lloyd-Webber, who spawned the musical adaptation that became a worldwide phenomenon, would be forgiven for emitting a few falsetto notes of alarm. Regardless, Fraser Valley Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s (FVGSS) latest pantomime – The Phantom of the Panto – hit the boards of the Surrey Arts Centre mainstage this week and continues until Dec. 9. Following on last year’s hit version of Beauty and the Beast (the CTC award-winner for best musical or pantomime production) the new show has the additional advantage of being an original from the society fold. It’s written by regular FVGSS performer Clive ‘Hitman’ Ramroop, whose audacious inspiration is to take the framework of the famous story, adapted many times since it first appeared in 1911, and rework it in broad ‘panto’ style. And according to Tom Cleevely, who stars as the Phantom, and Chelsea Rose Tucker, who plays Christine, the object of his obsession, the result is a very funny spoof that still fulfills all the family-friendly requirements of a Christmas season entertainment. “It’s a hilarious show, and so much fun to do,” said Tucker, who added she has come to terms with the humourous melodramatics and confusion of her character, a sweet young singer who is trained and guided behind the scenes by the compelling, if frightening, presence of the Phantom. “She’s a very positive person, if just a little bit terrified,” she said. “At first I found I was playing her much too seriously after doing regular musicals.” For the ambitious, up-and-coming musical theatre performer, Phantom is a serendipitous opportunity to revisit her See PHANTOM / Page 31

SULLIVAN, MAY

ENGH, Sheila Margaret passed away on November 22, 2012 after a long courageous battle with cancer. Sheila is predeceased by her beloved husband Chris, her father Jack, her brother John (Roberta), her sister Lindy (Erlends) and daughter-in-law Julie. Sheila is lovingly remembered by her four boys; sons Christian (Tonya), Robert (Stacey) and grandsons Taylor and Austin. Sheila will be dearly missed by her mother Thelma, sisters Ann (Chris) and Laurie, brother Jim, sisterin-law Roberta, brother-in-law Reg, sister-in-law Sharon, grandson Jason, granddaughter Amber, nephews Derrick, Steve, Spencer, niece Hayley as well as many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. Sheila loved her life on the farm with Chris and together they worked hard to make it a success. Sheila was a talented cook and all who knew her enjoyed her baking and canning. She was an avid reader and a talented writer and enjoyed the friends she made through many ‘Lord of the Rings’ fan sites. The family would like to thank the many dedicated doctors and nurses at Royal Columbian Hospital and Abbotsford Regional Hospital. A celebration of Sheila’s life will be held at Mt. Lehman Hall 6418 Mount Lehman Road on Sunday Dec 2, 2012 at 1:00pm. May Isabell Sullivan (nee McInnes) was born May 1st, 1914, in Fernridge Langley. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Nov. 22nd at Zion Park Manor in Cloverdale. May was predeceased by her husband Jim and daughter Trudy. She is survived by her sister Glenda; children Brian (Iris), Michael (Diane), twins Vicki and Richard, Patrick (Sharon), and Joni; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren. May spent most of her life in Surrey, but served overseas as an ambulance driver, with her sister Margie, during World War II. In 1941 she married Jim Sullivan who was also a pioneer from Sullivan Station. May taught for nearly 30 years at Cloverdale Catholic School and prior to that in the public school system, starting out with eight grades together in a single room school at Green Timbers in Surrey. “May” “Mum” “Granny” (and “Mrs. Sullivan” to her many students) was a kind, calm, steady person with quiet resolve. She was a loving wife, devoted mother, and caring friend. Her house was, for many years, a gathering place for family and friends. Everyone was always made to feel welcome and make themselves at home - and they did. The Sullivan home was one of constant activity, including sleepovers for the grandchildren in the tree fort, backyard visits and wiener roasts, countless cups of tea, and the occasional shot of rye. She enjoyed walking along the beach in stormy weather and observing nature. May had a passion for gardening and was known for her beautiful dahlias. Other interests included playing scrabble, doing crosswords, painting, and visiting at the picnic table with family and friends. We would like May to be remembered for her warm, friendly, and sweet disposition, her keen sense of humour, and her positive outlook on life. Even in her later years, she had the gift to see the wonder in the everyday. May will be truly missed and fondly remembered for the many lives she has touched and for all the happy times. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff and volunteers at Zion Park Manor for their superb care and support. The Memorial Service will be held at Precious Blood Roman Catholic Church, 17475 59 Ave. Cloverdale on Friday Nov.30th at 11:00, with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests donations be made to a favourite charity.
