Cranbrook’s new fire engine perfect for fighting fires in rural areas
Photo City of Cranbrook
Cranbrook Fire Department’s new fire engine is purpose-built for the demands of the area. Submitted A new Pierce Dash CF PUC fire engine was delivered to the City of Cranbrook Fire Department and now begins active service. This is the first Dash CF provided to a department in North America for front line use. The engine combines the most rugged and reliable technologies available in a configuration designed for performance and safety. Fire fighters quickly notice the improved visibility, ease of access to the cab and equipment, and the vastly improved handling. The engine has the tightest turning radius available on the
market and a unique pump and roll feature which will aid fire fighters in getting water to the fire faster. “The improved outward visibility, lower step-in height and easy access for service are just a few of the features our team was drawn to when evaluating the Dash CF,” adds Wayne Price, Director of Fire and Emergency Services. “Everything about this state-of-the art truck adds up to enhanced safety and ease of maintenance.” The fire engine was designed from the ground up for service in the Cranbrook area, with large onboard water and foam capabilities to im-
prove initial response to fires in rural areas and enough room to house the equipment required to deal with the wide variety of services CF&ES provides. “I am impressed with
the exceptional value our community is getting in this new fire engine, its design and function is ten years ahead of any other new fire apparatus on the market,” says Dave Lind, Deputy Director of Fire and Emergency Services. “Due to some fortunate timing we were able to purchase the truck without additional costs and today, the same truck would cost significantly more.” From a mechanics perspective the fire engine is easy to work on, requiring little maintenance and providing better access to components when repairs are required. For example,

a pump impellor can be changed out in less than three hours, a task which takes several days on most fire apparatus. “Cranbrook is setting a precedence of quality
which should result in increased dependability and reduced long term maintenance costs,” says Brian Howe, mechanic with the City of Cranbrook. “This is one
of the best built trucks that I have seen in my twenty four years of working with fire apparatus.”

Breathing Techniques and Weight Lifting
Usually what is commonly taught to weightlifters is to breath out when they lift the weights and breath in on the eccentric phase (when they come back to the initial position). While this can be true for exercises involving heavy weights and/or specific workouts, at the CHEK Institute our philosophy is a little differAurélie ent when it comes to beginners. Wiedemann When people practice yoga or martial arts they usually breath in when they perform movements that open the rib cage and breath out when they do movements that close the rib cage. When we think about it, it is quite logical to adopt a similar approach to beginner weight training. If we take for example a push exercise (a push-up or a cable-push) the classic approach would be to exhale as we push the weight and inhale when we come back to the initial position. In this case the CHEK approach to breathing is coherent with the classic approach, since we close the rib cage when we push using exhalation muscles and we open the rib cage on the eccentric phase using inhalation muscles. However when we analyze a pull pattern whether it is a cable pull or a bent over row, both approaches contradict each other. With the classic approach we are supposed to exhale as we open the rib cage (lifting the weight) which is tricky because the muscles used to exhale are normally made to close the rib cage. In the same way we are asked to inhale when coming back to the initial position, which consists in closing the rib cage, again the muscles we need to use to inhale are muscles that open the rib cage thus we are giving very confusing orders to our bodies. As a CHEK certified trainer I teach my beginner clients that any exercise that pulls you in the fetal position or in flexion is an exercise where you exhale to start and inhale to go back. For example while doing a jackknife you would exhale while bringing the stability ball in and inhale as you unfold. Similarly while doing an un-weighted squat you would exhale while going down and inhale as you go up. Any exercise that pulls you into extension such as reverse flyes or horse stance require you to inhale first and exhale when you come back to the initial position. Of course, as I mentioned earlier, these rules change as soon as we start working with heavier loads. a warm and festive Christmas dinner. Last year, the drive yielded around $16,000, divided between the Food Bank and Salvation Army. Jason Wheeldon, one of the organizers of the event, said that each year they try to find out just how many hampers the two community groups require and try to fill that need as best as possible. For this year, there are about 750 families that could use the support and the Chamber will be looking to raise $20,000 to help make the holiday better. The drive happens on December 5 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and people looking to pledge money for this cause are urged to contact the Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce at 250-4265914.

Kimberley residents looking to learn the basics of computer usage or who don’t have access to a computer of their own can once again turn to the College of the Rockies Kimberley Campus. The Community Access Program (CAP), funded by the Government of Canada, is designed to bring free computer and internet use to communities. This is the seventh year that the program will be running at the Kimberley Campus. Program Assistant, Josh Lockhart says, “The CAP program provides an opportunity for our Youth Intern to work with community members to teach them basic computer skills. We can show users how their employability and educational opportunities are increased through the free access to our high-speed internet computers.” This year’s Youth Intern will be Shane Peltzer. Shane brings web design and computer skills to the position and is eager to share his knowledge with the community. The program offers free one-to-one tutorials that anyone in the community can sign up for. There are also basic computer courses, ranging from computer and internet basics to using Facebook to stay in touch with distant family members. The program this year runs until February 2013. To sign up for a class or for a one-to-one tutorial contact the Kimberley Campus at (250) 427-7116 or email kimberley@ cotr.bc.ca
