Jingle down Main Street on Saturday SHERI REGNIER West Kootenay Advertiser
Christmas lights will turn on for the first time and Santa will make his debut at the fifth annual Jingle Down Main event in Fruitvale on Dec. 8. Festivities begin at 9 a.m. at the Memorial Hall with local firefighters flipping flapjacks and Beaver Valley NiteHawks serving up the plates, which include sausage and eggs. “This year we are hoping to break the record and serve more than 450 people,” said Kelly Walker, from Beaver Valley Recreation. “Last year we raised $1,900 and this year we are hoping for the same or better.” All proceeds from the meal will be donated to the Community Chest Christmas
Organizers hope to break records with the number of people served.
Hamper program. The popular Santa’s train will board four times that day, leaving the pole yard in the centre of town and running to the falls on Beaver Creek and back. The train leaves the station at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., noon and 1:30 p.m. There is limited seating of 40 persons available for each ride, so those wishing to enjoy the trip must first pick up tickets at
“This is the only line owned by Burlington Northern that this type of community activity happens on.” Lila Cresswell the Fruitvale post office in exchange for a non-perishable food item or new toy. No ticket is required for those under two years of age,
but an adult must accompany those under 12. The rides, hosted by the Beaver Valley Rotary, are courtesy of Columbia Power Corporation and the Nelson & Fort Sheppard Railway Company. “This is the only line owned by Burlington Northern that this type of community activity happens on,” said Lila Cresswell from the Village of Fruitvale. The family movie “Arthur Christmas” will screen at 3 p.m. at the hall with a nonperishable food item or new toy as price of admission. From 5-7:30 p.m., Main Street will be closed to traffic as the town hosts a funfilled evening that includes Christmas music, stage entertainment, hot dogs
and roasted chestnuts. Street vendors will be selling their goodies, and merchants will be open with deals for the season. Santa has promised to make his appearance to hand out treats to the kids, and the firefighters will warm the crowd with a bonfire. “Last year, we had a great turnout, more than 800 people, hopefully this year will bring in even more,” said Patricia Cecchini, Mayor of Fruitvale. All donations of food and toys will be put directly into the Community Chest Christmas hampers. More than 160 hampers were assembled last year; with 80 of them going to families, said Dorothy Connelly, volunteer for the non-profit organization.

Trail airline booming
1.877.364.2333 LOCAL 250.364.2333
Trail briefs An extra daily flight to Trail from Vancouver should net the city’s lone air passenger carrier a 35 per cent increase in air traffic volume this year, says the company’s vice president of commercial services. Spencer Smith said Pacific Coastal had targeted a 38 per cent increase in air traffic out of Trail when they elected to add a third daily flight to the Lower Mainland last spring. But it is likely the company will realize a slightly lower increase at 35 per cent — or around 7,000 passengers per year — when it is all said and done, he said. The airline added the evening trip to and from Vancouver Sunday through Friday, something that had never been tried in the Silver City. “We felt it was a good scheduling and timing for flights, but we really had no way to know for sure if the region would welcome a flight at that time of the day,” said Smith. “And they did. We had real good regional support for that time.” Smith also pointed to the longevity of the carrier in the market, earning the confidence of people that they are here to stay. As well, he said the reports of a greater success rate in getting into the West Koote-
nay than Castlegar’s Air Canada flight service has helped boost traffic. Students get gym Students of Fruitvale Elementary are getting a Christmas treat. Students will sing “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” in a renovated gym, after being displaced from the structure since the beginning of the school year. “The issue, initially, was some ceiling tiles coming loose,” said Steve Morissette, director of operations for SD20. “Once we went into the ceiling space and saw signs of damage, we had to bring in an engineer, who discovered that a ceiling truss was showing signs of failure.” The engineer was then appointed to draw up a repair plan. “It was determined that the cheapest and cleanest fix would be to add steel beams above the ceiling trusses, to add support,” explained Morissette. The next step was to put the plans to tender. “Until we received the bids from multiple tenders, we did not know what the cost would be.” In total, the school district has to pony up $295,000 for the repairs, which include repainting walls and resurfacing the gym floors.
Constituents honSUBMITTED
Castlegar — Katrine Conroy, MLA for Kootenay West presented Queen’s Jubilee medals to four deserving constituents during November. As a Member of the BC Legislature, Katrine was allowed to nominate four people for the Queen’s Jubilee Medal which is being given out for outstanding community service. She
had a committee that made sure all areas of her constituency were represented and four names were forwarded to the Governor General’s office for the medal. The four award winners were presented with the medal by MLA Conroy in their own home towns and in locations that were special to them. “I wanted to make sure that the award winners were presented
with their medals among family and friends,” said Conroy. “We also wanted a celebration to happen in the places that were meaningful to them”. On November 1, a medal was presented to Glady Manahan from Castlegar at the Castlegar & District Public Library. Glady has volunteered with the Library for 59 years and still works three shifts a week helping her community. On November 20, a medal was presented to Ray Fur-
teacher and educator. Ray’s dedication to the youth of this area deserved recognition. On November 21, Rosemarie Parent from Nakusp

the Arrow Lakes Historical Society they have made invaluable contributions to our historical knowledge. An addition to the Nakusp Library for the new archives is a testament to Rosemarie and Milton’s many years of volunteering. On November 23, Joanne Ellis from the Village of Slocan was presented an award at the W.E. Graham Community School. Joanne is the Executive Director of the W.E. Graham Community Services Society and has spent many years helping people. From aiding with applications for assistance, filling in forms and paperwork, and running a food bank, Joanne has spent many years assisting her community. “All of these recipients, through their many years of selfless volunteerism, have made our communities and region a better place to live”, said Conroy. “I congratulate them all.”

An oasis of fibre arts at Nelson’s “Community Threads” Nelson Staff West Kootenay Advertiser
There`s a buzz on Nelson’s Mill Street. Women of all ages are making their way through rain and snow to the Nelson and District Women`s Centre, armed with yarn and needles. Once inside the coffee is on and the fun begins. Pull a chair up to the spinning wheel and let volunteers show you how it works. Choose some yarn and learn to knit or crochet. On Fridays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the women’s centre Community Threads provides an opportunity to come together and learn
how to do all sorts of textile arts — knitting, crocheting, spinning, sewing, embroidering, felting, making rugs and moccasins twice a week at the Nelson and District Women’s Centre. Did your mum sew? Did your grandma teach you to embroider? Nope? Here`s your chance. Come and meet mentors – the women’s centre adopted aunties and grandmas. Learn these skills before they get lost and forgotten. Every Friday from 10 a.m., drop in and join in the fun – there`s always laughter and someone spinning a yarn. Hooked on crochet? Come show them how.
Fancy making a quilt? Drop in on Wednesdays between 9 a.m. and noon and volunteers will guide you through the process, inspiring you all the way. Bring some fabric you like or choose some from the sewing room. They will have the sewing machines set up for you to use. Every month they have been offering free workshops on specific topics. So far they have had a beginners knitting workshop, counted cross stitch, moccasin and rag rug making workshops. For those with mobility issues, the centre has a gentle access from the back, across
the street and down from the Nelson Fire Hall. To register or ask questions call Penny at 250-551-4951 or email penny@nelsonwomenscentre.com. Do you have skills you`d like to share? They need mentors and workshop leaders. What can you teach? They can provide childcare and transport for the workshops – just give us some notice. Community Threads is supported by local businesses: Shannon`s Fabrics, Share Nelson and Positive Apparel. The project has been running for more than four months, and the participants range in age from six to 85.

With the hopes of giving area musicians a voice, a guild has started up in the Boundary – the Kettle River Musician’s Guild. “It’s about furthering the interests of musicians and musical groups in a region all the way from Rock Creek to Christina Lake,” explained guild president Gary Smith, adding that an aspect of that would be a mu-
sician database. “If someone’s looking for a particular person that plays a particular kind of instrument and is available at a certain time and plays a certain genre, they can connect more easily because right now, it’s by word of mouth,” he said. Social media and technology will play a role, with a Facebook page and guild website projects that are currently in the works and Smith said both
are expected to go live within a few weeks, if not earlier. Smith said some long-term goals include looking for a permanent performance venue and joining the Boundary District Arts Council to give musicians even more of a voice. The musician’s guild idea was conceived by Smith and Christina Lake’s Rick Richards, who fittingly enough, was someone Smith had played with in the past.
“He and I were ones that basically brainstormed this but we do have a board now,” said Smith. “Right now we’re opening it up to everyone so we can just get more input and see where people would really like to go with it.” There is a yearly guild membership fee of $20 and people wanting more information can contact Smith at 250-4431256 or by email at bugsyblues@gmail. com.

What’s new with what’s old? Bidders’ value comes in all shapes and sizes Greg Nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser
Another in a series about items of local note on eBay. Something doesn’t always have to be particularly old to fetch a decent price. Case in point: two envelopes bearing POCON postmarks — post office computer organization numbers — from the Grand Forks sub office No. 1, dated 1989 and 1998, sold for $80 and $66 Cdn respectively last week. A better-informed postal collector will have to let us know what made them so desirable. In both cases the same two bidders drove up the price. • A cleaning fluid bottle from the Boundary ghost town of Phoenix sold recently for $37 US. Prepared by J.B. Boyle, the label promised “A finish preserver, cleaner, and polish for furniture, fixtures, and all woodwork.” John Borland Boyle was, as of 1898, a druggist in Victoria. The 1901 census found him, age 30, living in Phoenix

with wife Ella. He advertised weekly in the Phoenix Pioneer, and through its pages we learn he was a member of the local Liberal association and served on city coun-
cil in 1904. His drugstore was on Knob Hill Avenue. By 1907, Boyle moved to Vancouver, where he had a drug store at 2001 Alma Road in Kitsilano,
and published postcards under the name “Boyle the Druggist.” He was last listed there in 1920 before Leonard G. Couzens took over the business.
• Collectors can never get enough of sternwheelers, it seems. Recently, a postcard of the Kootenay Lake ship SS Nasookin sold for $93.50 US The rare view, dated 1913, shows a large crowd at the Nelson wharf. It may have been the ship’s launch, for it was built that year. Along with the SS Bonnington and Sicamous, it was among BC’s largest inland steamers. From 1931-47, the Nasookin operated as a vehicle ferry between Gray Creek and Fraser’s Landing until being replaced by the MV Anscomb. Part of the ship survives as a home on the North Shore. A postcard of the Bonnington, meanwhile, sold for $77 US. It showed a large number of people on board and standing at the Nakusp wharf. This steamer operated between Arrowhead and Robson from 1911-31 before it was dismantled in the 1950s and sank. Another card showing the ship lit up at night went recently for $66 US. See pictures of all of the above at nelsonstar.com.
Amphitheatre project eyed for east Boundary Grand Forks briefs After the successful completion of the Christina Living Arts Centre, the Christina Lake Arts and Artisans Society (CLAAS) is looking toward phase 2 of the project. It would see a second building located behind the current centre.
The building would become a studio centre for local artisans and also would function as an outside amphitheatre for summer music and performances. Trail project to connect Grand Forks to Christina Lake Work is underway
to connect Grand Forks to Christina Lake with development of the Cascade Kettle River Heritage Trail. The goal of the Grand Forks Community Trails Society is to connect the 17.5 kilometres between Grand Forks to Christina Lake with an accessible trail as a part of continuing the Trans Canada
Trail. The trail would also cross through the Boothman’s Oxbow Provincial Park and the Gilpin Grasslands Provincial Park. Grand Forks’ Santa Parade The Christmas season officially kicks off in Grand Forks with the Santa Claus Parade.

The Trail/Castlegar Registered Music Teachers’ Branch recently held a workshop and recital to celebrate Canada Music Week. During the morning and afternoon of November 24, students attended a workshop on composition. They learned where to begin when writing a piece of music, and how to develop that idea into a piece. The clinician was Arne Sahlén of Kimberley who performed many of his own compositions, as well as pieces written by other Canadian composers, at the workshop, and worked with students on turning ideas into pieces of music. The celebration continued in the evening with a Canada Music Week Concert, that featured students performing pieces composed by Canadians. The evening concluded with local students receiving Branch awards for the highest practical and theoretical marks in their respective exams. The award winners are as follows: The Helen Dahlstrom Practical Awards – Grade 1: Benjamin Scully, Grade 1 Contemporary Idioms: Sam Miller, Grade 2: Aden Goertzen, Grade 3: Caleb Kavaloff, Grade 3 Contemporary Idioms: Martin Vickers, Grade 4: Hannah Klemmensen, Grade 5: Emma Profili, Grade 6: Gabriella Kenna, Grade 7: Victoria Francis, and Grade 9: Lisa Leffelaar. The Dora Tweeddale Theory Awards - Theory 2: Gabriella Kenna, and Advanced Rudiments: Jeanine McKay. The Margaret Purdy Scholarship for a student continuing studies at the senior level was presented to Lisa Leffelaar.

Healthcare New CT scanner For Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital Trail – A new state-of-the-art CT (computed tomography) Scanner will improve diagnostic support for services provided at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital. “This is excellent news for patient care in the Kootenay Boundary area,” said Health Minister Margaret MacDiarmid. “The new scanner will provide faster, higher quality images to support the care clinicians are already providing. We are very pleased to support this significant upgrade for regional patient care.” The new scanner is a 64-slice GE Optima 660 and replaces the older 32-slice scanner at KBRH that is now requiring regular, ongoing maintenance and is in need of replacement. The new scanner has twice as many detector rows (64 versus 32) as the old unit. That means that it can either scan the same region twice as quickly, or with more detail. The system’s advanced computer
and software processing also improves the scan speed, while at the same time lowering radiation dose. In addition, this is GE’s first scanner designed with a “green” philosophy. It is built to have more recyclable components, takes less power, and requires less cooling than the older scanners. “Interior Health recognizes the importance in having the latest technology to support the services at our regional centre in Trail,” said Interior Health Board Chair Norman Embree. “I’m pleased to see this important upgrade that will benefit patients from across the Kootenay Boundary.” Interior Health expects the new CT Scanner will be delivered in December and anticipates the unit will be fully operational by January. By trading in the current unit and taking advantage of other rebates Interior Health was able to secure a highly favourable, time sensitive price for the new unit for Trail. The Minis-

rite Rotvold. “Our contribution to this new CT Scanner and to other important capital projects and equipment show this Board’s commitment to all the residents we serve.” CT provides detailed, cross-sectional views of all types of tissue. It is often the preferred method for diagnosing many different cancers and plays a
role in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of a variety of vascular disease, spinal problems and injuries because it can clearly show bones, muscle and blood vessels in highly detailed cross sections. Non-invasive assessment of coronary arteries with CT is one of the most promising applications for this latest generation scanner.

So long to November soaker... wettest one since 1984
Craig Lindsay
Castlegar News Reporter
The month just past was the wettest November the West Kootenay has seen since 1984 with 175 per cent of the normal precipitation. “The most significant storm cycle occurred between the 17th and 21st with 83.5 millimetres of precipitation falling,”
said Ron Lakeman, weather forecaster at the Southeast Fire Centre. “The 29th and 30th were also excessively wet with a set of Pacific frontal systems producing another 39mm of rain.” The month was also much milder than normal. “The mean monthly temperature was 1.8 degrees warmer

than normal, the mildest November since 2001,” said Lakeman. “Record daily maximum temperatures of 16.8 and 14.3 degrees were set of the 5th and 7th, respectively.” The monthly snowfall was less than normal and the vast majority of the snow that did occur melted on contact, said Lakeman. “The only snow
of any significance was the 5.6cm which fell during the night of the 11th. “The total amount of precipitation so far during 2012 is well above normal,” said Lakeman. “A near normal amount of precipitation during December will make 2012 the wettest calendar year on record.” The amount of pre-
cipitation for November was 162.9mm, which included 136.7mm of rain and 26.4mm of snow. The days of measurable precipitation were 19, which is 12 per cent above the norm of 17. The high temperature for November was 16.8 degrees on November 5, while the lowest was -6.7 on the 11th. The mean temperature was 3.7.

The annual Rekindle the Spirit of Christmas was held on Dec.1 and included a parade down Columbia Avenue with Santa, an outdoor market and the lighting of the downtown Christmas tree. Arne Petryshen photo
ARNE PETRYSHEN West Kootenay Advertiser
Rossland’s downtown was officially lit up for the season this past weekend with the annual Rekindle the Spirit of Christmas taking place on Saturday. The day was a chance to get out and see Santa, have a hot chocolate and get in the holiday spirit. It was also a chance to take a tour of the decorated storefronts and do some window shopping. Businesses offered festive deals and each store gave the chance to vote on the best storefront, as
well as win a basket of goodies. The Rossland Light Opera Players added to the festivities with music by roaming the streets as a merry band of carolers and Cafe Books West featured Christmas children’s storytelling. There was an outdoor market off of Columbia Avenue, where you could buy crafts, cupcakes and other local items. There were a number of groups fundraising around town as well, including the Rossland Figure Skating Club, the Rotary Club, Rossland Secondary School grads
and the Lions Club. You could pick up a Christmas tree as part of the Red Mountain Racers’ fundraiser. Fortis also gave an opportunity to exchange your old incandescent lights for LED strands which drastically cut down on holiday lighting costs. At 1 p.m. Santa arrived from nearby Pioneer Park, escorted by a large crowd. Kids could get their picture taken with Santa at the library. Later that night as the street lamps began to light up and the day faded, everyone gathered downtown for the
lighting of the Christmas tree. After a count down from ten, the tree lit up and completed the city’s transition to holiday mode. A fire pit was set up in Harry LeFevre Square, near the tree, to help warm up. Later in the evening the Spirit of Red hosted the Snowdance at the Miners’ Hall. It was a chance to get your feet moving and summon the snow gods. It was also a fundraiser for the soonto-be unveiled Olaus Jeldness statue, which required some repairs after a long trip from China.

Announcement
Bus route soon to be supplemented Rossland briefs
Tourism Rossland announced last week that it would supplement a city bus route that makes its way from the city centre to Red Resort. Spokesperson Deanne Stevens said the loop would top up some of the days BC
Transit doesn’t run. It would help ferry people to the hill on holidays. Stevens also announced a new service that will make the trip from Spokane to Rossland, then Nelson. Diamond Jubilee awards again presented
Two local residents have been awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal on Thursday in recognition of their outstanding volunteer efforts in their communities. Longtime Rossland resident Jackie Drysdale and Trail resident Robin Michelle Legere were each
honoured with the medal, given out this year as a celebration of Queen Elizabeth ii’s 60 years as monarch. A crowd turned out for the ceremony, held at the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary office in Trail, just prior to their regular meeting.

Horoscope Michael O’Connor
for the
Week
December 7, 2012
Tip of the Week: Sagittarius is symbolic of seeing the big picture. In light of the rapidly encroaching 12-21-2012 end date of the Mayan Long Count Calendar, it helps to see it from a wider angle. Hardly an arbitrary fact, the Sun is currently in the process of crossing the Galactic Center, from the earth’s perspective. This only occurs once about every 26, 000 years! Due to the size of the Sun against the backdrop of the Galactic Center, it takes 36-42 years to fully cross over that point. This crossing began in the late 70’s and will continue for at least 3-4 years yet. This time period has been called era 2012. Some people have been lead to believe that this will bring about the end of the world and have, at worst, sensationalized this with a wide array of disaster scenarios. Yet, if we consider the time period that constitutes Era 2012, we can actually see that the world has and continues to change so dramatically that we are actually on the threshold of a new world. Here is a short list of some of those changes: WWW, cell phones, social media, DNA, Higgs Boson, Stem Cell Research, New Age, wide spread acceptance of multi-dimensionality, crop circle phenomenon, orbs, unprecedented cloud formations requiring new name categories, recognition that pyramids exist all over the world, revival of interest in Atlantis, challenges to popular notions of ancient and pre history, widespread conspiracy theory, torus tube convection around planets, solar energy revolution, proof of influence of solar activity on weather, rapid climate change, Carbon 7, black holes at the centers of galaxies, recognition that the Classical Maya knew about galaxies and that we live in one and that there is a black hole at the center of it. Yes indeed, a brand new world is being born and the old one is rapidly ending.

A busy pace continues and you are covering a lot of ground. Yet spurred on by various ambitions and perhaps a host of duties you are willing to do what you must. Yet, may thoughts about how things can and will be different are running beneath the surface of daily communications. Meanwhile completing and creating closure somehow feels good, right and necessary.
Some cycles are bigger, deeper, more intense and or involved and passionate than others, like the current one. A steady deepening of commitments with a long-term focus on the future is featured. Yet rather than feel contracted, you feel expansive, exuberant and willing. Yes, the work load is heavier than it used to be but you are okay with that. Go figure!
While the focus remains on health and strengthening your overall constitution and/or fortifying your base continues, you want to get out, to play. Meeting new people is in the mix. Experiencing the unexpected with people has been a standing theme for a while and you are ready for a change that way. Expect to take new leads this week.
Oh to be free of fear and worry. It sounds easy, so why isn’t it? Too much thinking is the classic issue. Some would say excess lower mind, that of the ego. Worry can be interpreted as caring, but it actually does not help much, if at all. Practicing being present in the moment with ‘what is’, is the classic solution. Genuine gratitude for life helps and meditation is the real deal.
Your world is opening up in new and exciting ways. With the crack in the door and the light coming in you are wise to do what it takes to swing it wide open. Laying claim to latent gifts and talents meanwhile, is stirring at deeper levels. These require vision and courage. If you are having trouble seeing this light, seek counsel and do it now!
A dynamic learning curve continues and the lessons are coming from all angles, some unexpected. The time is right to flirt with new possibilities. The tried and true, at least in some areas, is beginning to lie. Since two wrongs don’t equal right, your best option is to redirect your focus towards more truthful, stable and reliable sources.

It is said that the karmic lords never sleep and they never forget. Life knows who we are, what is owed to us and what we owe. Graceful acceptance of the dues and penalties as well as the rewards is a sign of true wisdom. Reaction, blame and self pity only serve to deepen the suffering. Fortunately, the light of a new day is steadily growing.
A pioneering mood is lingering. You have been seeking new answers, insights and leads. Now you may have to contend with deciphering which ones are the best. The likely answer is: those that stand to reach furthest into the future. The best choices usually involve a tight weave between health and a genuine sense of service, which is truly a privilege to render.
You are in the mood to enter new territory. Yet, you may feel both called within and without. To reconcile this conflict consider the famous lyrics, ‘you gotta get in to get out’. Listening to your inner voice and heeding its urgings is the ageless wisdom. Be extra careful of excessive logic now. To trust your feelings, acknowledge them and feel your silent truth.
The returns for many of your past efforts are rolling in now. Hopefully they are the kind you want. You may feel the need for some time out to manage the flow effectively. Be deliberate and concise with your communications, unless the exchange is deep, sincere and valuable. Your ability to make fine distinctions now is at a peak, make the most of it.
You are in the mood to cut loose, get away, break free. A creative diversion might help. Yet, you may feel duty bound and restricted. How can you take good care of yourself in this stressful cycle? Patience is one way. The coming New Moon cycle will bring some needed relief. That is in one week. Accept this time as one of building character.
Getting the attention you feel you want and deserve is a current focus. A learning curve is implied. Perhaps you need to increase your social media skills or learn how to ask for a raise. Either way, it is important that you be pro-active and give to the situation. Your confidence levels should be rising steadily these days so ride that wave!
