Burnaby is the third-most expensive market in Canada to buy a home after Vancouver and Richmond, according to a study by Coldwell Banker Real Estate. The study looked at Coldwell Banker’s average listing prices of four-bedroom, two-bathroom
properties on its company website between January and June of this year. In Burnaby, the average price for the company’s listings was $917,968, after Vancouver’s $1.87 million and Richmond’s $1.18 million. Burnaby was well ahead of fourth place, Oakville, Ont. at $745,000. The most affordable city in the study was Windsor, Ont., with an average listing price of $170,991. Former Burnaby Green Party candidate Helen Chang finally has her apology, albeit a year later. And after she filed a defamation lawsuit. Chang was upset with an ad prepared by the Burnaby Teachers’ Association (BTA) and published in local newspapers in November 2011 before the last civic election. The ad indicated which school trustee candidates the BTA endorsed and criticized those it did not. Chang was cited for having run for office “under every banner except BCA (Burnaby Citizens Association) including the Liberals.” That’s simply not true, Chang said in an interview. In 2005, she was elected school trustee as a member of Team Burnaby. The next time around, in 2008, she ran as an independent. In 2009, she ran in the provincial election for the Green Party of B.C. Derby Centre proposes new seniors rental project Wanda Chow

The society operating the George Derby Centre care facility wants to build a seniors market rental housing complex next door. But some Burnaby council members want to see subsidized housing instead. According to a city staff report, the 220-acre site was acquired in 1945 by the federal Department of Veterans Affairs for the former George Derby Veterans Hospital, which was demolished in 1988. The current care centre was built
around the same time. In 1981, Burnaby council approved a land use plan for the property that identified the rest of the land for park and conservation area, low-density, multiple-family development and road right-of-way purposes. The property is now owned by the province and operated by the non-profit George Derby Long Term Care Society under lease. Etherstane Developments Ltd. has applied for a rezoning for the property at 7550 Cumberland St. to allow it to build a five-storey building with surface parking.
The proposed facility would be operated by the society without public funding or subsidy on a non-profit basis. It would provide market rental housing for seniors who are able to live independently, with the help of supports such as dining, housekeeping and laundry services and organized social activities. “The existing care facility, together with the proposed seniors supportive rental building, would contribute to a comprehensive seniors’ residential campus that would allow seniors

Chang said that in 2010, she was approached by the federal Liberal party to run as a candidate in the 2011 federal election. But she withdrew her application for candidacy two months after she submitted it because she no longer felt comfortable representing the party. When she saw the BTA ad in the 2011 civic election, “it was quite a shock,” Chang said, especially since the BTA had endorsed her as an independent candidate in 2008. She complained to the NewsLeader and was satisfied by the prompt response and the correction that was subsequently published. When she contacted the BTA, she said she was told that the NewsLeader’s correction would have to suffice. At first, she thought she would let it go, she said, noting she is “very grateful” for the
education her two children received in the Burnaby public school system and didn’t want to make a fuss. But political and legal advisers thought differently. So, after several attempts at contacting the BTA for a resolution to no avail, she filed a defamation lawsuit in B.C. Supreme Court on Nov. 16. On Tuesday, Chang said she received a letter from the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, of which the BTA is a member local, informing her it was placing ads in the local newspapers correcting their statement. Indeed, in Wednesday’s NewsLeader, an ad stated the BTA’s original statement about her political background was incorrect. “We unreservedly retract that reference and apologize to Ms. Chang for any detrimental impact it may have had on her reputation,” it said. Chang is satisfied with the
outcome. “I’m going to discontinue my defamation lawsuit because they promptly responded this time.” As for what impact the ad may have had on her election chances, Chang said “it could have had a detrimental effect” among voters that didn’t know her personally. She finished 16th with 2.9 per cent of the vote, well out of the running for the seven trustee positions, which were all won by the Burnaby Citizens Association. In any case, Chang said, “I want to say thank you to the BCTF because they promptly reacted to my request and I think it’s a very right and very noble act to correct their mistake.” BTA president James Sanyshyn did not respond to an emailed request for an interview by the NewsLeader’s deadline. twitter.com/WandaChow

“Of course the prices now are so high there so that’s why now they’re coming to Burnaby,” which has its own share of Asian shops and services, said Ng. In recent months, after the study period, Ng said his company’s Burnaby list prices (as opposed to sale prices) have dropped by five to eight per cent. “People are realizing that, the market’s slowing down, if I need to sell I need to adjust my price in order to get some activity on it,” Ng said. “But by no means are we seeing a fire sale.” As for whether prices will drop further, he believes that’s
unlikely since most people are living in or renting out their homes. In the United States, people are scrambling to sell to get out of the market after becoming victims of too much speculation, he said. “But no one here sells their principal residence for no reason just because the market is bad.” Prospective buyers who have been holding off waiting for prices to drop further are starting to see there are no drastic reductions likely and are jumping back into the market while interest rates are still low. “We’re seeing a bit of a turnaround already now.” In 2008 and 2009, local real
estate prices dropped by 20 to 25 per cent “but it came back like wildfire within nine months. That was a global collapse, we’re not in a global collapse now.” Ng predicts prices will continue to go up, but more gradually than in the past when 10 to 20 per cent jumps were common. Instead, in the next few years he sees prices rising two to five per cent annually. Those larger increases simply weren’t sustainable, he said, but the Lower Mainland continues to be an attractive place to live, drawing upwards of 60,000 new people to B.C. each year which helps fuel the local housing market. twitter.com/WandaChow

Covering suicide News media usually avoid writing about suicides but still reported extensively on the death of Port Coquitlam teen Amanda Todd. Obviously, there is huge public interest in her story but many — including Vancouver School Board trustees — say the publicity surrounding Todd’s suicide creates risk for vulnerable youth. It glamourizes suicide, they say, resulting in more suicidal thoughts among young people. The media should follow Canadian Psychiatric Association (CPA) guidelines, they say, and limit coverage, photos and details while publishing more information about alternatives, such as treatments, and resources. Concern is justified. According to BC Coroner statistics, on average in a year, 17 kids under 19 kill themselves in B.C. but there are huge swings; in 2009 there were 11 child and youth suicides, in 2010 there were 31. Copycat suicides may explain the variation in numbers but placing the blame on the traditional media is misplaced. For the most part, traditional media self-censor when it comes to reporting suicides. But Amanda Todd’s story drew a different level of coverage and here’s why: It was largely told by social media. Traditional media had no choice but to follow the story once it had gone viral. For the most part it didn’t reveal details about her death and made sure coverage included details on resources available to those experiencing problems. The ongoing interest in the case makes it an important story. Eventually, that interest will wane but those issues won’t go away without effort and even media attention. There is much to gain by bringing suicide out of the shadows into the public consciousness if it results in more support for struggling kids and their families. —Black Press

Time to build a permanent shelter Burnaby does a great job helping to provide social housing. For most people of modest means, living with a disability, elderly—or all three—there is a decent array of options. It could always be better, of course, but in general this city’s got it covered. And the City of Burnaby deserves credit for working with developers, the province, Ottawa and local non-profit agencies to help that happen. But where it falls short is with the city’s most vulnerable people. The homeless. As many will know, there is no permanent shelter for the homeless in this rapidly growing city of 225,000 people. Vancouver, New West, Surrey, Langley, Maple Ridge and the North Shore all have shelters, but not Burnaby. The only option is during a few months of the year when a local church opens its doors and staff from the Lookout Emergency Services Society operate an extreme weather shelter. And it’s only open on nights when weather is severe enough that it can create a higher health risk to homeless people.

Or they’re forced to go to Vancouver. Or New West, or one of the growing host of cities working to fill this vital piece of the housing continuum. The Greater Vancouver Shelter Strategy website shows more than two dozen shelters for the homeless in Vancouver, depending upon the time of year. Many are year-round. In New Westminster, a city of 60,000, there are four. Burnaby doesn’t do permanent shelters. Why? To prove a point? Mayor Derek Corrigan says

housing is not a municipal responsibility, and under his leadership the city has stood its ground on the issue. In interviews, he’s called the practice of giving people a bed indoors for the night, then pushing them out the door in the morning “ridiculous social policy,” that distracts from dealing with the core issues of why these people are on the street in the first place. He points to provincial government policies that have cut people off welfare, closed mental health institutions and increased the child poverty rate. He points to the fact that until recently, B.C. had the lowest minimum wage in Canada. And he’s also criticized Ottawa for all but ceasing to fund social housing 20 years ago. And those are all fair comments. They really are. But in the ‘90s when Ottawa drastically reduced funds for health care, social programs and infrastructure did the provinces and cities just hold the line on everything to make a point? No, because some things are essential. Back in 2006, the provincial

government put a call out to cities. They said if you put up a piece of land and waive the development costs, we’ll build and fund new housing for the homeless. Eight cities responded. Vancouver put up 14 sites. Cities such as Surrey, Maple Ridge, Abbotsford and Kelowna also put up sites. Where was Burnaby? Why is a city with almost $600 million in reserves—one of the richest municipalities in Canada—doing nothing? Corrigan says it’s a slippery slope: Look at Vancouver’s rising property taxes, he says—aren’t they exceeding their mandate at residents’ expense? That’s a red herring. Burnaby can afford to take the risk. It can make a start by offering a single piece of land, maybe even with a building on it. How about signing this contract? Something’s been bothering me for a while. Seeing as the teachings at home or school aren’t working, or just fall on deaf ears, I have a suggestion. When young adults apply for their driver’s licence, there should be a document they must sign off on. On it could be a list of statements and facts they must read and understand. It could go like this: 1. Do you realize if you drink and drive, steal, hurt or kill someone, you will go to jail for (and that should be forever, but let’s just say) X number of years and you will have a criminal record. Do you understand?: YES/NO 2. That criminal record would prevent you from traveling outside of Canada and make getting a good job all but impossible. You’d have to live with your parents. (That’s just to add a little pressure on the parents to maintain their interest in their kids!) Do you understand?: YES/NO 3. If you participate in something like a Stanley Cup riot, you will be caught and you will get a criminal record. For the consequences, see number 2. I could go on because there would be a lot to cover but I’ll leave it at that for a start. New drivers would be a captive audience if their licences were on the line and if the questions were put to them by someone a little intimidating. Who knows, it might just make someone think twice about their actions. I’m writing this because we’ve had our fourth vehicle break-in. No one caught of course but I don’t blame the police. Generic druG plan doesn’t Go far enouGh Finally some good news from Victoria. Starting April 1 next year the price of a generic drug will be set at 25 per cent of the cost of the brand name equivalent and, a year after that, will be reduced to 20 per cent. We can perhaps expect the BC Liberals to tout this cost saving during the election period that starts two weeks later. But, maybe not, if they
want to avoid yet another embarrassment. The record shows that, by April next, it will have taken three years and the loss of several millions of dollars in cost savings to arrive at a generic pricing level that should have been a no-brainer. It all started in 2010 when the BC Liberals declined to follow Ontario’s example in legislating the generic drug cost at the 25 per cent mark and, instead, negotiated a deal with the pharmaceutical industry. Unbelievably, they agreed to 35 per cent. A year later they admitted there was a $50 million shortfall in expected savings from the “negotiated” deal, and announced an intention to introduce legislation modeled after the Ontario law. Not mentioned was the fact over the same 12 months B.C.ers paid $150 million more for generic drugs than Ontarians did. A similar over-amount will have been needlessly spent by the time the aforementioned legislation comes into effect April 1, 2012. It took a while but, hey, late or not 20-25 per cent of the brand name drug cost is still a good deal, right? Well, no, actually that price level is still far more than what some other jurisdictions are paying. New Zealand, for example, pays considerably less for many of the same generic drugs available in Canada. The difference is that the staterun health plan down there adheres to a system whereby pharmaceutical companies bid for the exclusive right to be the generic drug supplier. As a Capitol Hill resident, I ride the C2 and know it is very important to seniors, students, and other neighbours who live on our steep hill. If TransLink needs to increase its ridership, why not re-route it past Confederation Seniors Centre and Alpha Secondary School, neither of which has direct bus service currently? Why not have it go to the SkyTrain station at Brentwood Mall, where many of us shop, and which will soon be expanded? Hospital pharmacists and medical imaging technicians plan to go ahead with brief strikes Thursday and Friday as a mediator attempts to reach a settlement with 16,000 health science employees at hospitals and clinics across B.C. Mediator Vince Ready was brought in Tuesday after negotiations that started in February failed to produce an agreement. The Health Employers Association of B.C. issued a statement Wednesday warning that the unions intend to go ahead with its first rotating strikes despite the mediation effort. Michael Marchbank, CEO of the employers’ association, said hospitals have no choice but to begin postponing non-emergency procedures, including surgery and diagnostic tests. “Employers are very concerned about the patient care impact that will result from this action,” Marchbank said. The first strike is expected to be by hospital pharmacists, performing essential services only from 9 a.m. to midnight Thursday. That would be followed by a 24-hour essential-service-only strike by medical imaging technologists, who perform x-rays, CT and MRI scans, nuclear medicine tests and other imaging procedures. The Health Science Professionals Bargaining Association, representing a group of unions, says there will be no picket lines. Surrey Memorial Hospital, recovering from a broken water main that forced closure of the emergency ward and damaged scanning equipment, will be exempted from strike action. Reid Johnson, president of the largest union, the Health Sciences Association, said the B.C. government’s “co-operative gains” bargaining mandate has not produced an employer wage offer, and the presence of a mediator alone isn’t enough to suspend strike action. “We tabled a proposal for four per cent [wage increase] over two years, with no benefit concessions,” Johnson said. “And that’s in line with the other public sector agreements that have been reached over the last few months under the government’s cooperative gains mandate.” He said nuclear medicine and other technical specialties are among the highest-skilled positions other than physicians, and there are chronic shortages of qualified staff. B.C. needs to pay competitive wages and also train more technicians at home rather than recruiting from other countries, Johnson said.

Burnaby RCMP are seeking the public’s help in identifying a suspect in a recent supermarket robbery. On Oct. 27 at about 6 p.m., the Choices Market store in southeast Burnaby was robbed by a lone male suspect. The man indicated he had a gun and took an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the store. Burnaby RCMP believe the suspect is responsible for several
other similar robberies. The suspect is described as a 45 to 60 year old white or Aboriginal man, fivefoot-six to five-foot-ten in height, 200 to 260 lbs. with a stocky to heavy build. He has short greying hair and light-colored marks around his eyes. He often wears a baseball cap and aviator-style sunglasses. Anyone with information about the robbery is asked

Burnaby views needed in Urban Futures Survey Online survey continues work started in 1973 Wanda Chow

An opinion survey of Metro Vancouver residents that has helped shape growth in the region is back for a third time and participation from Burnaby is sorely needed. The Urban Futures Survey was started in 1973 by the late Walter Hardwick, an urban geographer based at the University of British Columbia. The survey and its followup in 1990 helped inform the original Liveable Region Plan and its successor, the Livable Region Strategic Plan which was designed to
prevent urban sprawl out into the Fraser Valley. Now Hardwick’s daughter Colleen is carrying on his work using an online public consultation system, PlaceSpeak, which she developed. The software platform allows researchers to confirm the municipality participants are located in when completing the survey, while also ensuring their confidentiality is maintained. It’s also a long way from the methods used by Colleen’s dad. In 1973, the bookletsized surveys were completed in person over an hour. “You could never do that today,” said Colleen, now a UBC graduate
student specializing in geography and planning. Her job as a girl back then was to take the 1,500 surveys, code them and take them to be keypunched onto computer cards, for analysis by a large mainframe computer that took up a whole floor of an office. In 1990, as a young adult, she coordinated surveyors who were sent out into the field. When she went to get the 1973 data to run comparisons, it was on 5 1/4-inch floppy disks. This time around, her challenge was how to do the survey when people often don’t answer their doors or even their phones, assuming they even have landlines anymore?
So she developed PlaceSpeak, which people will be able to complete in about 20 minutes online. The survey is being sponsored by the non-profit Lambda Alpha International, also known as the Honorary Society for the Advancement of Land Economics. Colleen said her father intended for the survey to be done every 15 to 20 years but with his death in 2005 it fell by the wayside, which is why updated data could not be used in developing Metro Vancouver’s Regional Growth Strategy which was adopted in 2011. Already she’s getting calls from TransLink and local municipalities for the survey results for
Bombardier lands SkyTrain deal Bombardier has been picked to supply 28 new SkyTrain cars for the new Evergreen Line to Coquitlam as well as the rest of the SkyTrain system. The $90.7 million contract was approved by the province and TransLink, which will run the new rapid transit line once it’s finished in 2016. The Evergreen Line cars will work on the first two SkyTrain lines and will link directly to the Millennium Line. SNC-Lavalin is the preferred proponent to build the 11-kilometre Evergreen Line from Lougheed Town Centre in Burnaby to Douglas College in Coquitlam.
Health wait times ranked B.C. patients on average wait 17 weeks after visiting a doctor before they are seen by a specialist and actually treated, according to a national survey conducted by the Fraser Instititute. That was the third lowest of provinces in Canada, after Ontario and Quebec. Just over seven weeks of the delay to treatment in B.C. was the initial wait between the GP and the specialist, an
improvement from 9.7 weeks in the Fraser Institute’s 2011 survey. B.C. patients waited
an average four weeks for CT scans and ultrasounds – slightly longer than the national average.

and right now Burnaby has the second-lowest level of participation behind only Surrey. To be statistically relevant and consistent with the previous surveys for comparison purposes, it needs 0.2 per cent of Burnaby households to participate. And it will help prioritize the region’s

The first weekend of the 2012 Operation Red Nose campaign saw donations and rides more than double over the same time last year, thanks to the addition of service to Burnaby and New Westminster. The first night ever for the program in Burnaby saw volunteers provide 14 rides in that city, while in New Westminster six rides were delivered, according to Chris Wilson, coordinator for the local Operation Red Nose campaign based out of the TriCities.
Last weekend, the program’s 53 volunteers provided 84 rides, drove 2,687 kilometres and collected $3,015 donations for KidSport. The same weekend in 2011 saw 40 rides given, 1,338 kilometres driven and $1,455 in donations. The program allows people to book a ride when they decide they shouldn’t drive home from a Christmas party. A team of three volunteers arrives—two to drive the client home or to their destination in the client’s own vehicle, and the third to follow
behind in the team’s car. Donations are accepted and all the money goes to KidSport groups in Burnaby, New Westminster and the Tri-Cities. Remaining dates for Operation Red Nose are Friday and Saturday nights, from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m., on Dec. 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22 and 31. Took book a ride, call 778-866-6673 about a half-hour beforehand. VICTORIA – The B.C. government is appointing nine new provincial court justices and launching a pilot project to reduce the wait time for hearing child protection cases. Attorney General Shirley Bond announced Tuesday that two judges will be assigned to work with Chief Judge Thomas Crabtree on the child protection case management project this spring, and a second pilot program to reduce criminal court waiting times. Two of the new judges will be assigned to Surrey, the busiest provincial court in the province. One each will go to Port Coquitlam, North Vancouver, Vancouver, Kamloops-
Okanagan and the Northeast district. The changes are based on a review of B.C. court delays by lawyer Geoffrey Cowper, who called for a system to enforce timely hearings of evidence, to overcome a “culture of delay” and a tendency of defence lawyers to seek delays that weaken the prosecution case. The B.C. Crown Counsel Association has also identified Nanaimo and Richmond as having excessive delays. Association president Samiran Lakshman said in Surrey, it takes 14 months or more to schedule a half a day for a brief trial. Bond said the extra judges bring the B.C. total to 132 fulltime-equivalent, with each judge
and support staff costing $1.6 million a year. “The addition of nine new judges and the backlog reduction projects – and specifically the assignment of judicial resources to those projects – sign a shared understanding by all parties that changes need to be made to improve the justice system,” Bond said. Cowper noted that 98 per cent of criminal cases end with a guilty plea or a stay of proceedings, but the system treats all cases as if they are going to trial. The number of cases dropped significantly after B.C. police started imposing heavy roadside penalties for impaired driving instead of sending suspects to court.
West Nile virus threat fizzles out Despite years of predictions that mosquito-borne West Nile virus would arrive in the Lower Mainland, the potentially deadly illness is still a no-show here. And Metro Vancouver has now decided to stop spending $76,000 a year coordinating a regional response to the threat. Nobody has ever been infected by West Nile within the Lower Mainland and it’s only been detected here once – in a horse in Aldergrove in 2009. The B.C. Centre for Disease Control now considers Metro Vancouver to be at the very edge of the potential reach of the virus, which has infected people in the Interior and Washington State. The virus had spread rapidly
across North America in the early 2000s but activity in the Pacific Northwest has since slowed considerably. Fraser Health said this year it no longer recommends preemptive use of larvicide to control mosquitoes in its region and provincial funding for West Nile response that used to be administered through a Metro function has been cut off. The Fraser and Vancouver Coastal health authorities will instead work directly with local municipalities to direct West Nile mosquito control and prevention if and when the virus poses a more serious risk in this area. Metro Vancouver will still control nuisance mosquitoes on its own lands, such as Metro
regional parks, as will some cities, including Richmond. Fraser Health has also scaled back its program to monitor mosquitoes, crows and ravens that serve as indicator species for West Nile. There were 24 probable or confirmed West Nile cases in B.C. residents from 2007 to 2010, but nearly all of them are believed to have been contracted travelling elsewhere. There have been no cases anywhere in B.C. in the last two years. About 20 per cent of West Nile-infected people get a fever and other symptoms, recovering within a week or so. About one in 150 get severe illness, such as brain inflammation or polio-like paralysis that can be fatal. jnagel@blackpress.ca

Giants top midget team in province The Vancouver Northwest Giants, based at the Burnaby Winter Club (BWC), hit the halfway point in the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League season at the top of the standings. The Giants head into this weekend’s home games against the South Island Royals with a 17-1-2 record. They hold a four-point lead over the Okanagan Rockets with all teams having played 20 games. The Giants will play the Royals at 7:45 p.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m. Sunday. This past weekend they pulled off a pair of wins over the Thompson Blazers in Chase. On Saturday, the Giants edged the Blazers 2-1 with David Begert scoring an unassisted goal in the first period and Jansen Harkins getting the winner in the second. The next day, Anthony Conti scored twice in a 5-0 triumph with singles going to New Westminster’s Brandon Del Grosso, Zach Landon and Begert. • Another club based at BWC, the Grandview Steelers, is 12-111-1 but their 26 points only have
them fourth in the five-team Tom Shaw Conference of the Pacific International Junior B Hockey League. The same point total would have the Steelers second in the other conference. Last Sunday at the Winter Club, the Steelers lost 3-1 to the Richmond Sockeyes. Karl Schopf was the only Steeler to beat Sockeyes goaltender William Latimer in 28 shots. The goal, on a set up from Jordan Hall in the second period, tied the game 1-1. Grandview game up the winner midway through the third period and Richmond added an empty netter in the game’s final minute. Grandview goalie Joshua Friesen made 26 saves on 28 shots. The Steelers hit the road to play the Mission City Outlaws on Thursday and the Abbotsford Pilots on Friday. They will play host to the North Delta Devils on Sunday, 4 p.m., at the Burnaby Winter Club. Grandview’s Nicholas Hermary, 17, is tied for third in league scoring with 33 points, including 17 goals.
Clan women moving up rankings The Simon Fraser University women’s basketball team is moving on up the rankings. The latest USA Today Top 25 coaches poll has the Clan 13th in the NCAA Division II rankings. They debuted at No. 17 two weeks ago before moving up to 16 last week. The climb comes on the heels of a pair of Great Northwest Athletic Conference victories over Saint Martin’s (82-45) and Western Oregon (80-38) last week. The Clan are 8-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play. SFU won’t play again until they take on Trinity Western University in a non-conference game at the West Gym on Dec. 29 at 6 p.m.

The awards honour the best in new-home construction and renovations in Metro Vancouver, and are judged by a panel of experts from outside of the region. Among the 45 categories this year will be awards recognizing renovations of all types, interior design, marketing and new construction. Sample awards

De Wit already has a few plans now that he’s taken over the reins. “Our focus at GVHBA going forward will be on expanding local government relations activity and encouraging greater intramembership trade,” he says. Prior to starting at the GVHBA, de Wit was the CEO of an investment fund “that has invested in, among other things, technologies for improving energyefficiency in the built environment, which lead to my interest in the residential home building and renovation industry,” he says. De Wit has lived in the Lower Mainland since 1986, when he attended Simon Fraser University for his business degree. He now lives with his wife and daughter in South Surrey.

Phyllis King (Burr) May 23, 1916 (daughter of Percy & LaVerne Burr) passed into the arms of her Saviour and Lord on Nov 24, 2012 in Eston, SK. She is survived by husband Stan, daughter Rhonwen, granddaughter Rhea, sister June Hallonquist, brother David (Carol) Burr, sisters-in-law Bess Gilkinson, Thelma Pritchard, Rhelda Pawulski and brother-in-law Stewart (Lynda) Hunter and many nieces and nephews. Graduating Teachers’ College with distinction, Phyllis taught on Vancouver Island, New Westminster and Vancouver. In 1945 she attended Full Gospel Bible Institute in Eston, SK, subsequently joining the Faculty as Music and Choir Director. Deeply committed to Jesus Christ, Phyllis spent many summers ministering in camps in Alberta and Saskatchewan. In May 1951 she married Stan and was soon blessed with a son, Michael(1952), and daughter, Rhonwen (1953). In 1954 they sailed for Africa to serve their Lord in Upper Volta (Burkina Faso) establishing churches, teaching, and founding Bible schools until 1986 when Phyllis retired because of ill health. Returning to Canada (1986), Phyllis was involved in the Eston Full Gospel Church (Ladies’ Missionary Fellowship, Bible Study and prayer groups), as well as leading weekly devotions at JubileeLodge. The Chilliwack Progress Black Press B.C. The award-winning Chilliwack Progress has an opening for a full-time, multi-media journalist. The successful candidate will have diverse writing capabilities, including experience writing hard news. Advanced photography and video skills will be key attributes, as well as excellent time management. An ideal applicant will have a strong grasp of social media best practices (Twitter, Facebook, etc.), a passion for online journalism, and an understanding of how to tailor content accordingly. Knowledge of basic Photoshop, iMovie and inDesign is a must. Candidates should have a diploma/degree in journalism, or a related field. The successful candidate will show keen attention to detail, work well under deadline pressures, and be willing to learn in a fast-paced environment.
