Kimberley needs your input on new brand
Photo Wanda Caven
On Saturday, December 1, at Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet, owners and their pets lined up to get their picture taken with Santa Paws. This was the 12th year for the fundraiser for the East Kootenay SPCA. English Mastiff Cash (pictured with Santa and owner Nola Bates) was not entirely sure about the bearded man. Thanks to the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group, the Kootenay News Advertiser, Santa Paws and all the participants for making this another fun day.

KimberleyVisitorSurvey.com In the meantime, the Kimberley’s process for strengthening their story is moving right along. “Kimberley’s branding process is proceeding quite well. To date, there have been over 340 surveys filled, which is far more participation than many communities that have engaged in this type of process. There were over 80 people in attendance at a recent brand information meeting. There have been some group presentations and interviews, and now we’re looking forward to a further series of interviews and Community Conversations,” said Kevin Wilson, Economic Development Officer for the City of Kimberley. For questions or further information about strengthening Kimberley’s story please contact Kevin Wilson with the City of Kimberley at: 250.427.9666 or kwilson@Kimberley.ca or you can go online and sign up for Community Conversations at www.KimberleyMeeting.com.

Deck the Halls
I don’t know if it is the distinct and intense fragrance or the vibrant green that nicely offsets the bright-coloured ornaments, but for me, Christmas is not complete without a real tree. Even while living in small student apartments, I made sure there was at least a bit of room for a vase with boughs of fir. Evergreens have had a special meaning for people in the winter since ancient times. It was sometime in the 16th century that people in Germany and along the Baltic Sea started the tradition of decorating an evergreen tree with candy, baubles and bells and the Christmas tree was born. Today, there are many choices: real or artificial? Plantation-grown or native tree? At Top Crop, we offer fresh cut, BC plantation-grown trees as well as locally-grown, natural-shaped trees. All fresh-cut trees are kept in our climate-controlled greenhouse for the freshest tree possible. Cultured trees are grown on a Christmas tree farm and have been sheared and groomed to perfection. We carry several different varieties and are sure to have the right tree for you that will please the entire family this holiday season. Here is a brief overview of some of the different trees we offer: Douglas Fir: The Douglas Fir is the most economical cultured tree available. Douglas Firs are liked for their dense, bushy shape and fine soft needles. They have a distinctive pine like scent that often lasts throughout the entire season. If you like to put on lots of lights, then this is your tree. Noble Fir: With a beautiful, almost spruce-like appearance, the Noble Fir has soft blue-green needles on evenly spaced, strong branches. They are perfect for heavy ornaments. Noble Firs keep really well and have a very pleasant mild fir scent. Fraser Fir: This tree has an upward branching habit, making it a thinner tree. Because of the upward branching it enables the perfect view of the underside of the needle, thus giving the tree a silver appearance. Grand Fir: This variety is a popular tree as it has a glossy dark green color and is soft to the touch. With the Grand Fir you would want to use light-weight ornaments. If you have pets and small children and you don’t want a poky tree, this is your best choice. Nordman Fir: This tree has achieved the status of the ultimate non-needle-drop Christmas tree. The Nordman Fir is very symmetrical and graceful. Its shiny bright green needles are soft and delicate to the touch. For better needle retention, cultured trees should not be frozen. If the temperature is below -6° C, you may want to consider bringing an old blanket to wrap around your tree to take it home. And whatever you do, do not leave it sitting outside in freezing conditions as freezing is the number one reason for needle drop. Once your choice is made and you get your tree home, make sure to re-cut the bottom and immediately immerse it in warm water. You will be surprised how much water your tree will take up in the first 24 hours, so keep it well watered and never let your tree dry out. Place your tree well away from heating elements and vents, or cover and tape them shut. If you have an exceptionally dry house, an anti-desiccant can be applied to help retain moisture in the needles. When the holidays are over, please dispose of your tree in an environmentally responsible manner by taking it to be chipped. Often youth groups offer a tree round-up for a small donation. Till next week... happy holidays Submitted by Kerstin

Lower Cost for Generic Drugs
1. BC is reducing the price of generic drugs to 25 percent of the brand name come April 1, 2013, and to 20 percent as of April 1, 2014. Currently, British Columbians pay 35 per cent of the brand name price for generic drugs. 2. For example, current cost of a 30 day prescription of Lipitor is $55 (not including pharmacy fees). Today, the generic version costs about $19. On April 1, 2013, the generic cost will be $14, and on April 1, 2014, $11.00 3. BC families will pay less at the till to fill their prescriptions. And government will benefit too, providing more resources to enhance patient care for seniors and families. When most people think about the holidays, family festivities and good cheer likely come to mind. What few of us consider is that the holidays also present an increased risk of home fires. Home fires during the holiday season often involve cooking, Christmas trees, candles and holiday decorations. By taking some preventative steps and following simple rules of thumb, most home fires can be prevented during the holidays and beyond. For many great fire safety tips around Christmas trees, candles and holiday cooking, please visit our website. Have a fire safe and happy holiday season!

part of the performance. When director Terry Miller was asked why he would want to revive It’s a Wonderful Life, the Live Radio Show merely two years after he originally presented it, he replied by listing off a long list of contributing factors. “First,” he said, “was the observation that Christmas is interlaced with a wide variety of traditions. There are many styles of tradition involving the arts, including entertainment like movies, plays, choirs and even ballet.” “Then,” he continued, “Wonderful Life is such a good story, it is sometimes so important to be reminded that our place in the world is not without consequence. This story deserves to be told over and over again. And, it’s an odd bit of theatre. Theatre is the most fun when we work slightly outside of the normal boundaries. There are so, so many ways to tell a story.” He carried on with the final piece of his explanation. “This is also a very important piece for the actors. Two of them play the very interesting, emotion-filled roles of George and Mary Bailey who are the lead characters of the story. These roles are what anchors the rest of the story. The other three actors play about 25 characters amongst them, an extremely challenging undertaking. I told these multi-character actors see Wonderful page 9

BCTS audit gives local program thumbs up Submitted An audit of BC Timber Sales’ (BCTS) operations in the Rocky Mountain District found that forest planning, silviculture, fire protection, harvesting and road activities complied with provincial forestry legislation, according to a report released today. “In particular, the BCTS and its timber sale licence holders’ activities in the Mark Creek Community Watershed were well done,” said board chair Al Gorley. The audit area includes portions of the Columbia and Kootenay rivers, as well as many lakes and smaller rivers, and the audit area also provides many recreational and tourism opportunities. BCTS’s activities are subject to the Kootenay Boundary Higher Level Plan Order (KBHLPO). The audit examined forestry activities carried out between August 2010 and August 2012. About 425,000 cubic metres of timber were harvested during that period. One cubic metre of timber is equivalent to approximately one telephone pole. The Forest Practices Board is B.C.’s independent watchdog for sound
forest and range practices. The board audits forest and range practices on public lands and appropriateness of gov-
ernment enforcement. It also makes recommendations for improvement to practices and legislation.
