Food will be one less thing hundreds of struggling families and individuals will have to worry about this Christmas. Residents opened their hearts and their cupboards throughout the North Okanagan Wednesday evening for the 35th annual Realtors’ Food Drive. In Greater Vernon, between 350 and 400 volunteers went door-to-door and collected 35,200 pounds of food, filling 55 apple crates. In Armstrong, upwards of 20 volunteers collected approximately 10,000 pounds of food. Food drives also took place in Enderby and Lumby. “We did very well,” said Dawn Taylor, food drive coordinator. Despite the immense generosity of the community, this year’s donations are down slightly from last year’s in Greater Vernon. “We didn’t match last year, we’re a little bit short,” said Taylor, as 60 apple crates were filled last year. And the need is only growing at the Salvation Army food bank in Vernon, where it’s anticipated 850 Christmas hampers will be handed out. “We’ve interviewed significantly more this year (for hampers) than this time last year,” reports David MacBain, community ministries director. Since the economic downturn, more people continue to rely on local food banks. “We haven’t seen a reduction in demand,” said MacBain. “We’re still being asked by many new clients. Many are working but just can’t make ends meet.” The growing need is similar in neighbouring communities, like Armstrong where 140 hampers were given out last

Approximately half of all food bank clients are singles, but there are also a number of families. “Approximately 30 per cent are children,” said MacBain. Despite the growing demand at food banks, MacBain is confident they can keep up with the need thanks to events such as the Realtors’ Food Drive. “There was a lot of new participation this year and that kind of ensures a future for this 35-year tradition,” he said, noting new realtors as well as the involvement of Junior Chamber members and help from Students Without

Borders for the second year. And the donations collected Wednesday are expected to grow, as missed households contact local realtors or bring donations down to the food bank. “We know that many more will still come through our doors over the next few couple of days,” said MacBain. Those struggling to make ends meet this Christmas can pick up hamper applications at the food banks, as well as the Salvation Army thrift stores in Vernon – 3102 29th Ave. and the new location at 5400 24th St. (behind Future Shop), which opens Saturday.

There’s growing pressure on local politicians to ensure public access to parks. The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee was lobbied by residents Thursday to maintain Heritage Park even though the owner, the Vernon School District, is proceeding with selling the Bella Vista site. “This was purchased by taxpayers of the area (as a possible school site) so we should get a deal on it,” said director Gyula Kiss. Neighbours of Heritage Park are concerned the land could be sold to the highest bidder. “It is utilized not only for dog walking but by young and old alike,” said Andy Hume, with a residents’ committee. “There’s seniors walking the paths, children and young adults for bicycle riding, kite flying and remote control aircraft flying as well as a general space to get out and enjoy.” Hume envisions the site eventually having a community garden. “Our committee firmly believes it is in the best interest of all Vernon residents as well as those in the Westmount/Bella Vista

area to maintain at least the amount of useable park space that now exists,” he said. “Such a green space site as this will be increasingly important as development in the area continues to increase the population density. Once the green space is gone, it is gone forever.” The City of Vernon will ultimately be responsible for local park matters under a new parks structure. But until that process is finalized, GVAC and the Regional District of North Okanagan remains involved. “We will endeavour to keep the park as it is,” said Trafford Hall, RDNO administrator, of Heritage Park.

There needs to be a lot of clarification.” Beyond the conflict between rocky mountain ridge mussel and milfoil, OBWB is looking towards a potentially more significant issue. There are concerns that zebra and quagga mussels will eventually show up in local lakes after spreading across North America since the 1980s. Both are native to eastern Europe. “It’s shocking how easily this infestation could impact our waters,” said Cunningham. “One mussel will have one million larvae.” These non-native mussels clog water intake pipes, pumps and boat motors. They also deplete food sources for fish and produce toxins that kill fish and birds and contaminate drinking water. “They thrive in high calcium water, which is Kalamalka Lake,” said Dirk.

Two down, and one to go. The Regional District of North Okanagan board unanimously ratified a memorandum of understanding Wednesday that will see the parks function in Greater Vernon restructured. Coldstream endorsed the plan Monday, leaving Vernon as the only jurisdiction still not on board. “I’m fairly optimistic they will ratify the agreement,” said Bob Fleming, BX-Swan Lake director, of the city. Bob Fleming “I would hope this (Coldstream/RDNO support) puts a little pressure on them.” Vernon council will debate the proposal at its Dec. 10 meeting. Rob Sawatzky, Vernon mayor, supports the pact but a majority of council will need to approve it. “I would be surprised (if it fails) but I’ve been surprised before,” he said, adding that providing all of the necessary information to councillors is crucial. “We have attempted in the process to have as much of council involved as possible.” Under the agreement, some parks will remain regional in scope while others will revert to the individual jurisdictions for ownership and maintenance. The proposal calls for the city to take over regional district-owned beaches on Lakeshore Road while the city would turn over ownership of Kal Beach to RDNO. “This will be a durable agreement. It meets all of the expectations of those involved,” said Fleming of finding compromises.

The requirement for off-site works, such as sidewalks and storm sewer, will also be negotiated with the District of Coldstream.

A military judge sentenced a former instructor at the Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Centre to a year in prison for sex-related offences. The judge sentenced Capt. Daniel Moriarity to 12 months in jail, dismissal from Her Majesty’s service and reduction in rank to the rank of 2nd Lieut. in relation to various sexual offences committed against two cadets in 2010 and 2011. The judge also ordered Moriarity to provide a DNA sample and to comply with the Sex Offender Information Registration Act for life. Moriarity is appealing the decision and has been released from custody though he must obey a number of conditions. Standing court martial proceedings against Moriarity began on Oct. 15, 2012, at Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt in Victoria. On Oct. 18, the court martial found Moriarity guilty of four offences: two counts of sexual exploitation; one count of sexual assault; and one count of invitation to sexual touching. The incidents for which Moriarity was charged occurred in Vernon and at a cadet corps in Victoria.

The man accused of killing Brittney Irving, a North Okanagan woman who vanished after attending an apparent drug deal in 2010, is seeking to have his trial moved out of Kelowna. The court heard Monday that Joelon Verma’s lawyer has applied for a change of venue. That legal remedy is typically sought if the defence feels pre-trial publicity has prejudiced an accused person’s ability to get a fair jury trial in the city where the crime they are alleged to have committed occurred. Verma was arrested in connection with the 24-year-old Irving’s death on June 25, 2010, two and a half months after she vanished. The Kelowna woman was reported missing on April 7, 2010, and her Ford Explorer was found abandoned the same day on Philpott Road. According to those who knew her, she was allegedly taking part in a drug transaction of some sort the last day she was seen. Weeks after her disappearance, police announced Irving’s body had been found. Police never disclosed the location of her body, nor the cause of her death. Verma’s case returns to court Dec. 14. He remains in custody.

Police officer pleads guilty CHERYL WIERDA Black Press

In a surprise move, the officer caught on video kicking Buddy Tavares in the head during an arrest has pleaded guilty. The change in plea came Wednesday afternoon, after a Kelowna courtroom had filled to hear the defence begin to call its case in the Const. Geoff Mantler trial. Instead, defence lawyer Neville McDougall asked for Mantler’s plea of not guilty to be “expunged” and a plea of guilty entered to the charge of assault causing bodily harm. Geoff Mantler The charge stems from a Jan. 7, 2011 arrest where Mantler, of Armstrong, kicked Tavares in the head after ordering him out of his truck while investigating a shots fired complaint. The court heard that Tavares was complying with Mantler’s commands and was on all fours when the blow was delivered to his head. (Police were later told by Tavares that he had been firing shots to scare off geese at a local golf course). For Tavares, 53, the guilty plea means he won’t hear from Mantler why the officer decided to kick him that day. “I’ve been waiting a long time to hear why he did that. I’m not going to hear that,” said Tavares. “That’s why I’ve been hanging around.” And while the guilty plea was surprising, Tavares didn’t see how the case could have ended without Mantler, now 29, being held responsible for the kick. “How do you explain that? You can’t.” “You tread water as long as you can, but then you eventually drown,” he said. “I think he was at the point he was drowning.” What frustrates Tavares more is Mantler’s potential sentence.

The Crown has indicated to the Tavares family that they will be seeking upwards of 18 months house arrest, said Tavares’ sister Pam Weiher. The courts, said Tavares, have an opportunity to “make an example here.” He says “nothing” ever happens to police found guilty of misconduct and hopes the judge will send a message with his sentence. “Let’s see if he takes the opportunity or if he says, “Go home and watch TV again.’” Tavares also said it is “staggering” how much taxpayer money was spent on the case, which was in its eighth day of trial when the guilty plea came. Sentencing will happen at a later date, and when it happens, Tavares said he will not be there. “I’ve had it with Mantler, I’ve had it with everything. I’m leaving,” said Tavares, who heads to Mexico Thursday. His sister, Wieher, said Mantler finally did the “right thing” with his guilty plea and said she’d like to see Mantler resign from the RCMP. He’s currently suspended without pay. A civil suit is pending, she added. Mantler had no comment as he left court. n Nothing has changed for Const. Geoff Mantler from an employment perspective, according to RCMP Superintendent Bill McKinnon. “I won’t make any statement in relation to the charges before the court,” McKinnon said when news broke the suspended cop had changed his plea to guilty in his current court case. The superintendent went on to say Mantler will remain suspended without pay, as per the decision levied by the RCMP National Headquarters in Ottawa in May 2011. At the time, he had two assault charges and the superintendent told reporters the decision to suspend his pay, while unusual, was due to the severity of the allegations against him. There will be no change in leadership at the Regional District of North Okanagan. Patrick Nicol, a Vernon director, was elected to a second year as board chairperson Wednesday. “I am honoured to represent the board and the citizens of the North Okanagan,” he said. “The regional district is an area of 85,000 people with good services.” Patrick Nicol Nicol believes the focus for 2013 will include restructuring Greater Vernon’s parks, recreation and culture functions, and pushing the province to change meat processing regulations. Enderby director Howie Cyr was also nominated for the chairperson’s position. Rick Fairbairn, rural Lumby director, was acclaimed to another year as vice-chairperson.

The group that oversees Armstrong Spallumcheen Parks and Recreation is intrigued by the idea of outdoor ice at the Nor-Val Sports Centre. Representatives from Canlan Ice Sports are making their way to the facil- Van Tienhoven ity this weekend. “They’re coming up to look at the feasibility of put-

ting in outdoor ice there,” said Joe Van Tienhoven, Spallumcheen councillor on the parks and recreation board. Van Tienhoven added his praise of parks and general manager Byron Sayer who has done such a great job promoting and booking programs, there is no more prime-time ice available to rent at the Nor-Val Sports Centre. So Sayer was given permission to investigate the possibility of adding an outdoor sheet at the facility, which would hook up to the existing ice plant. Other parks and recreation updates from Van Tienhoven included the fact shower repairs in the Nor-Val dressing

rooms will be done after the ice is taken out and before lacrosse season. And because it’s too expensive to maintain, too short to play on and too dangerous with the aging fence, the tennis court at Memorial Park is being removed. A new boiler will be installed at the Memorial Park pool in the spring, and will be ready for the 2013 outdoor season. And Van Tienhoven announced that, after many complaints about navigating Canlan’s website to find information on Armstrong programs, a local website has been created. A Vernon producer of pet treats is under new ownership. CanAm Pet Treats has acquired the assets of the Darford brand of natural treats for dogs and cats. “We are committed to the continued production of top-quality treats and to ensuring our customers’ needs are met,” Brian Connolly, CanAm chief executive officer. CanAm is a new company that was formed by private investors to acquire Darford. Treats will continue to be produced at the Vernon plant. In the near future, a U.S. plant will be added to supply the American marketplace while the Vernon plant will be responsible for the Canadian market. The spirit of giving

hey crept across my lawn, like Christmas elves in the night. In reality, there wasn’t a pointed ear in sight, just big-hearted local realtors collecting bags of food for the food banks of the North Okanagan in their annual Realtors Food Drive. It’s just one of the ways all of us in the North Okanagan are encouraged to give back to those in need and it’s a way of stepping back from the excess and greed that threatens to overwhelm the more spiritual aspects of this holiday season. And it’s a lovely way of giving back without breaking the bank: grab a few cans of soup, some boxes of pasta and anything else that is nonperishable and that might make a nice meal for someone who is down on their luck. Katherine Mortimer As the spending season heats up, it’s wonderful to remember those less fortunate. We all treat each other with a little more love, a little more tolerance, a little more patience and kindness. How wonderful it would be to keep that holiday spirit going all year. But if we could find a way to keep that feeling going all year, this would be a kinder, gentler world. I had a friend who, years ago, decided to serve at a soup kitchen. This was a woman who did not work, and who did virtually nothing to give back, yet had both the time and the resources. So while I admired that she wished to help out at a soup kitchen on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, I wondered why she didn’t feel compelled to help out at any other time of the year. But I suppose it’s a start. And I often think Christmas is a great time to teach our children about giving back. As they get caught up in the frenzy of asking Santa for the moon,

sometimes literally, if not figuratively, it can be a great lesson to teach them that others don’t have enough to eat, let alone a brand new Barbie, Spider Man action figure or Lego set. We can’t pass a Salvation Army Christmas kettle without my daughter wanting to put some money in, without expectation of anything in return, which always makes me feel very proud. Of course, five minutes later she is begging for something she “really, really wants.” One of the best events in town is the annual shoe box packing party held every year at Coldstream Christian Church. There, for a donation, you are given a box that is marked for either a boy or a girl. Upstairs in the church hall, there are tables filled with gifts for children of all ages, from toys to games; there are toiletries from tooth brushes to soap; there are school supplies such as pencils, markers and notebooks. Once you’ve decided on the age of the child, you start grabbing stuff and filling the box. You’re encouraged to add a letter, and a photo is taken to include in the box. The first time I took my daughter she was six years old and I wasn’t sure how she’d react to seeing a room filled with toys that were not for her. My fears were unfounded as she quickly got into the spirit of giving and we ended up doing several boxes. We returned this year with her friend and the two girls were shoe box-packing machines, filled with enthusiasm, never once asking what they were getting. It was lovely to see, made more special to imagine a young child on the other side of the world opening the box and seeing the delights it contained. I hope to carry the lessons of that evening throughout the year, not just for my daughter, but for myself as well. That Christmas doesn’t have to be some mad frenzy of gift-buying, baking, decorating, visiting and endless activities. In the words of the Grinch, “Maybe Christmas doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!”

The smile on the face of the premier illuminated the early morning gloom as the new Port Mann bridge was officially opened to eight lanes on Saturday. It’s hard to say how long the honeymoon will last. Especially when commuters and truckers start to see the effect the full cost of tolls will have on their wallets every month. Sensing the backlash that financial hit could spawn, crossing the bridge will be free for the first week, half price until Feb. 28 for drivers who haven’t registered for a special windshield sticker and until next November for those who have. Like a drug pusher trying to establish a marketplace, the government is hoping if they get drivers hooked on the new bridge, they’ll pay whatever it takes to keep moving and won’t blink when they start getting dinged three bucks a crossing. But they may be underestimating the determination of Greater Vancouver motorists to drive for a bargain. Already burdened by the highest cost of living in Canada, extracting another $1,500 a year out of the household accounts of regular users of the Port Mann will be one debit too much. Not to mention the increases in the cost of food and consumer goods that are transported by trucks over the bridge. Three years ago the tolled Golden Ears Bridge that links Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows to Highway 1 via Langley was opened with similar fanfare. Yet every morning drivers heading west from those communities line up bumper-to-bumper on the Lougheed Highway to cross the free Pitt River bridge as the six lanes of the Golden Ears sit largely empty. While tolls help pay for the infrastructure we so desperately need to keep up with Greater Vancouver’s booming population, those tolls need to be kept affordable for all. Black Press

write this letter to the editor after putting the key in the door one last time, handing that key over to the future and closing the Zellers store in Vernon for the final time. First I would like to thank all of the customers whom have loyally shopped in our store over the years making it the successful location that it was. The familiar faces and positive experiences we encountered was a sure reason we enjoyed working and serving each of you every day and it has been a true privilege to have been a contributing member of the community to which we served. I would also like to thank the management, staff and tenants of the Village Green Shopping Center for your continued support over the many years that we have been involved. THANKS On Sept. 15 I was out doing some errands, and had parked in front of Hunter's store for a few minutes. While I finishing up my purchase inside, I heard a voice asking,"Is that your car?" I turned around to see a young man gesturing at my vehicle outside, and explaining that my right front tire was flat. Horrified, I looked out, and sure enough the tire needed attention right away. André (that was the young man's name) and his father, Dennis, took charge immediately. André said that he would walk over to Partly Dave's to see if Dave had a portable compressed air pump he would be willing to lend. Dennis and I followed a couple of minutes later, to find that Dave was filling a portable tank with compressed air, and was happy to loan it to us for a few minutes. We three walked back to my car, and within about three minutes André had pumped up the tire sufficiently for me to be able to drive the car to the auto dealer for a speedy inspection and repair job. During the 10 minutes or so that this matter took to resolve, I learned that André works in Alberta, and his dad in Saskatchewan. They just happened to be in Hunter's when I needed their help. They gave unstintingly of their time and energy to assist and reassure someone in need, and they did

Jo Jones DISABILITY PENSION Re: article by Richard Rolke, Disability rate increase urged... I keep reading articles and hearing news stories about people on disability pensions. What I only see and hear is about provincial disability payments and not one iota about Canada Pension Disability recipients, such as myself. What the news neglects to mention is this, a person on provincial disability also has free medical, free prescriptions, free eye and teeth care, can get cheaper bus passes and cheaper recreation passes if they so desire. True there is not enough low cost housing but that is not only occurring in Vernon but throughout the province of B.C. and elsewhere in the country. What I do not hear or see is any information on people on Canada Pension Disability. I'm one of the " lucky ones" I guess if you want to call it that. I worked prior to becoming disabled, and went through so many hoops just to get accepted on disability. The way it works in this province is this, if you become disabled whether it is permanent or temporarily, and you have worked in the past four years, you must first apply for Canada Pension Disability, then

you can go to Social Services and apply for welfare until you have been accepted for disability. Trust me when I say it is not easy to apply for disability, your doctor must fill out forms which you have to pay for by the way, and if your doctor does not answer the questions in the right way, it can and will take longer to jump through the hoops. Once you have the forms filled out correctly it takes any where from six months to a year for those forms to be looked at. If you do get accepted you can now go from regular welfare benefits, which is so miniscule it's ridiculous, to Provincial Disability, then once Canada Pension gets the doctor reports you will then be put on Canada Pension Disability. The only benefit of all this is this, since you applied in the first place for Canada Pension Disability, they will back pay you any money that you would of got had you been on CPD in the first place, minus the money you already got from welfare on regular benefits. Yes it's true you can work on both disability types of payments but first you need to find a job that fits your disability and trust me when I say this, it is not an easy task to find first, part-time work that fits your disability, second, usually once an employer finds out you have a disability they judge you on the fact and then you don't get a call back for an interview.

I realize up until now I did not mention what my CPD pays me per month, so if you're ready this is it, $782.54 per month. I went from earning over $21 per hour when I was not disabled down to living on welfare for almost a year of just over $550 a month. Thank the stars I was able to find a 13 hr a week p/t job, unfortunately I only make min. wage at it. I have to say, yes the disability rate must be increased but what I also want to see is an even amount of disability payments for both federal and provincial and I want to see benefits included in the Federal Disability. I also want to see more low-cost housing built especially in my city, the City of Vernon. And I'd like to say not everyone is an older person when it comes to collecting Canada Pension Disability. Battle shapes up for BCFGA post JUDIE STEEVES Black Press

With Monday’s resignation of the embattled B.C. Fruit Growers’ Association president, both the vice-president and a former vice-president are locked in battle to replace him at January’s convention. With Kelowna grower Kirpal Boparai’s resignation, vice-president Jeet Dukhia of Vernon has taken over the helm of Jeet Dukhia the BCFGA until the Jan. 19 annual general meeting, when elections are held for the board of directors. And, at four regional council meetings held up and down the valley last month, both he and former vice-president Fred Steele of Kelowna were nominated for the top spot for 2013. Dukhia was also nominated for vicepresident, along with Joe Sardinha of Summerland, who did not run for re-election last year, after seven years as president

of the BCFGA. Neither Steele nor Dukhia believe that cultural issues are at the root of the past year’s controversy in the tree fruit industry, although Dukhia admits there have been some misunderstandings which could have come about because of that. But, he says there has been a succession of growers of different enthnicities who have represented the industry over the years. “A grower is a grower. We’re all hard workers and we can’t let anything get in the way of our working together,” said Dukhia. “The past is past. I want good relations now with the executive of the BCFGA and the board of the co-op. I’d like to heal the wounds and I’ll talk to anyone with a problem.” Dukhia admitted he had heard some growers who have hard feelings about the last BCFGA election, but he said you can’t stop delegates from getting their supporters out to vote. Steele said he doesn’t really think cultural differences are the reason for this year’s controversy. He’s relieved but says there’s no joy in Boparai’s resignation. “The reputation of the

industry has suffered,” he commented. Boparai was voted out of the industry’s major co-operative packinghouse in the summer for shipping his fruit to an independent, contrary to the contract he’d signed with the co-op. At the annual general meeting of the Okanagan Tree Fruit Co-operative in October, members passed a resolution calling for the BCFGA board to remove Boparai from his position as president. No action was taken. Steele said now he would like to use his experience to bring everyone together, set a new course and rebuild. “We need to make sure our voice is heard; that the membership is well-served and informed; and we need to involve ourselves in programs that will benefit us, such as the Columbia River Treaty discussions,” he said. Now that he is serving as president of the organization, Dukhia said he too would like to take a different approach. Hundreds of volunteers will hit the streets to distribute winter kits to homeless shelters across Canada, including in Vernon. The annual Angels in the Night homeless shelter project takes place Tuesday as volunteers from InvisMortgage Intelligence provide new winter clothing and supplies to those in need. This annual event is the culmination of 12 months of community fundraising efforts by Invis-Mortgage Intelligence in support of homeless shelters in the community. Volunteers work directly with shelters to find out what they need most, purchase new items and distribute them on a single night. The top five items requested by the shelters this year are: hats, gloves, basic toiletries, personal items such as underwear and socks, and bedding.

Tourism group hired Morning Star Staff

Lake Country is hoping to expand its profile with tourists. The district has decided that Tourism Kelowna will be its official community destination marketing organization. “Tourism Kelowna has been working with Lake Country attractions for many years,” said Ryan Roycroft, economic development manager. “The District of Lake Country believes that a formal partnership will further enhance the marketing effectiveness for these and other Lake Country businesses in a highly cost-effective manner.” As part of the partnership, the district can leverage the $2.5 million annual budget that Tourism Kelowna works with. “This will dramatically expand Lake Country’s external marketing reach in the area of tourism, in addition to work done with local partners for local marketing,” said Roycroft. The operation of the Lake Country Visitor Centre is not included in the agreement with Tourism Kelowna. District staff and council continue to work on options for operating a visitor centre. “Meetings are scheduled during December to work with stakeholders further on an economic development strategy to explore and pursue opportunities for growth,” said Roycroft.

The Irving K. Barber B.C. Scholarship Society has granted funds to five local students to support their post-secondary studies. The recipients include Amanda Neufeld from Lumby, and Bernadine Brown, Jennifer Leason, Danielle Saddleman and Taryn Schroeder, from Vernon. A total of $459,000 is going to 167 aboriginal students in B.C. Awards of between $1,000 and $5,500 each are issued to students through a competitive process every year. “These awards are an investment in the skills and talents of B.C.’s aboriginal students,” said Hugh Gordon, society chairperson. “They will help to open doors to B.C.’s educational system for aboriginal people in all regions of the province.”

There was a North Okanagan presence at the seventh annual Western Canada RoboCup Junior Games in Kelowna. Nelson Schier, 13, of Vernon Secondary School, placed third in the soccer category during the event hosted by Okanagan College. Nelson is familiar with competition as he and his brother Hudson won the dance competition at the 2011 World event in Istanbul, Turkey. At this year’s RoboCup Junior Games in Kelowna, Hudson, 15, represented Clarence Fulton Secondary. Four teams from Constable Neil Bruce Middle School in West Kelowna dominated the awards in three categories. The winners were among almost 200 students competing in a record number of teams registered. “This was one of the best competitions I have seen,” said Nadir Ould-Khessal, an electronic engineering technology instructor at Okanagan College. Winners from the competition have a chance to go on to compete in the Netherlands in June.

The District of Lake Country has launched a new website. The site featured multi-media resources for the community including interactive Google maps of parks, trails and facilities; video clips; downloadable reports and documents as well fillable, submitable pdf forms. “We needed to address concerns that information was hard to find on the municipal site,” said Reyna Seabrook, corporate services manager. “We researched the number of hits on each of our existing pages and looked at the top searches to determine what people were looking for. Snakes swap Soleway for Dancs GRAEME CORBETT Morning Star Staff

The Vernon Viper den has been more like a beehive of late. Completing their third B.C. Hockey League trade in less than a week, the Vipers paired up with the Penticton Vees for a rare deal, sending forward Jedd Soleway to Penticton for forward Dexter Dancs. The last time the clubs made a bargain was in October 2003 when Vernon sent d-man Jason Blucke to Penticton for future considerations. At 6-foot-2, 208 pounds, Soleway was Vernon’s largest forward and perhaps the owner of the team’s hardest shot. The 18-year-old Vernon native was fifth in team scoring with 5-11-16 in 26 games. “It was a little surJedd Soleway prising, but definitely if you’re going to pick another team in the BCHL it would be Penticton, so I think it’s exciting for sure,” Soleway told Black Press. “They know how to win hockey games; I want to be a part of that. Hopefully I can help them out, score and be physical.” The 6-foot, 165-pound Dancs lit up the Junior B loop last season with the Osoyoos Coyotes, racking up 67 points (29-38) in 42 games. He and Yotes’ teammate Alex Jewell, a Vernon product, earned a call-up from Penticton, joining the club on its march to a

and is listed as a ‘C’ prospect on NHL Central Scouting’s list for the 2014 draft. “I just like to use my size and skating ability and move my feet to create opportunities for myself and my teammates,” said Dancs. “I’m sort of a power forward, but I need to fill out more. I like to use my reach to beat defencemen.” The 17-year-old made his Viper debut Thursday as Vernon (10-11-0-6) entertained the Trail Smoke Eaters (12-18-0-1) at Wesbild Centre. While the Vipers will miss Soleway’s brute force, Dancs adds some speed up front and perhaps a little more offensive upside. “It’s a hockey trade that works for both sides,” said Vipers’ head coach/GM Jason Williamson. “It gives Jedd an opportunity to get away from home and play, and Dexter is a highly touted kid we’ve had our eye on. “We recruited him in the summer and we’re going to expect big things from him. He’s a big left-shot guy and we needed to add that to our lineup.” Dancs has only five points – two goals, three assists – in five games with the Vees’, however, Williamson projects those numbers will increase as he develops. He has also witnessed first-hand that Dancs can play with an edge when necessary. “Dexter can play that way too,” said Williamson. “He fought Pearce Eviston in one of the games we played this year.” Penticton head coach/GM Fred Harbinson agreed that a change of scenery might be in both players’ best interest.

The School District #22 fencing team put up some solid gold showings at their home tournament last weekend at the Beairsto School gym. Carlie Bickel of Seaton won the gold in both the Cadet Girls and Open Women Epée categories, beating out her little sister Landrey for the top spot. Jaxsen McKay beat out his training partner David Enns of Kalamalka Secondary for first place in Cadet Boys Epee, while Chris Dhlouey of Vernon shared the bronze with Finlay Nichol of Kamloops. Miles Forrest of Beairsto stopped Ty Cheyne to strike gold and silver medals in the U12 boys Epée while Andrew Schmidt and Ian Oliphant of Beairsto shared the bronze. On the girls U12 side, Hannah Zandvliet iced Danica Ariano of Beairsto for the gold, while Ayano Robertson of Beairsto bagged the bronze. Pendrel pursues B.C. Cup at Sovereign Lake JULIE MELANSON For the Morning Star

Two-time Olympian Catharine Pendrel got into mountain biking in Grade 12 because, as she once put it, she “sucked at all the school sports.” Pendrel grew up on a New Brunswick horse farm and dreamed of competing at the Olympics in one of the equestrian events. Instead, she began riding a bike and finished fourth in the cross-country event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and ninth last summer in London. She was the 2011 world champion with three World Cup gold medals. Pendrel, who turned 31 in September, has got wheels on snow, too. She entered the masters world

nordic championships in Vernon last year, winning the 15- and 30-kilometre events in skate skiing in the 30-35 age category. She said the big competition was in the 40-plus event, where some former Olympians were entered. This weekend, the Kamloopsbased athlete will take on skiers from Sweden, Brazil, Peru, Switzerland and Australia for the Teck B.C. Cup and Haywood NorAm races at Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre. Pendrel, a guest and keynote speaker to Supercamp, was brushing up on her technique over the past two weeks with the Supercamp coaches. The early-season ski camps were hosted by Sovereign

They called it the Santa Shootout Pee Wee Rec Hockey Tournament. Fittingly, the Bannister GM Flames and Sub City Donair Devils went 14 shooters before Carly Southam ended the drama in a 5-4 Flames’ victory in Sunday afternoon’s final at Civic Arena. Both Vernon teams played a tight, defence-first, four-on-four overtime period before going to penalty shots. Chapperon Chillihitza was the lone skater to beat Flames’ goalie Reece Hawthorne, while Jacob Brewer went roof daddy past Dalton Stenberg to keep the Flames alive after two attempts. “Carly has sweet hands and she had a confident smile when I called her name,” said Flames’ head coach Kevin Mitchell, assisted by Jim Erickson and Jeff Southam. “The kids learned what it takes to win with some inspired play all weekend, and we got all-planet goaltending from Reece.” Game MVP Nick Mitchell scored twice from the point for the Bannister crew, singles going to Chase Batchelor and Jonas Ramsey, who skated miles to cover Devils’ dynamo Finnian O’Keefe, who still managed to pull the hat trick and earn game MVP. VSS Panther sophomore wrestler Jordan Sheppard shocked the crowd as he powered half and pinned each of his opponents to claim the 84-kilogram division at a high school tournament Saturday at NorKam Secondary. It was the season opener for the Panthers, who are coached by Brad Wyse and Rob Eggert. VSS placed third in a field of 10 teams for Grades 7-10. “This is our third official season of wrestling here in Vernon and some of the boys showed just how far they’ve come in their skills this weekend,” said Wyse.

Added Eggert: “Jordan’s journey to gold was remarkable given the fact he just picked up the sport last season. He is such a quick learner with a positive attitude. We were so proud of his success today.” Lightweight Joe Eggert picked up where he left off last season to earn Vernon a second gold in the 38-kilogram category, while his older brother Sam pinned both his Salmon Arm and Pentiction opponents before bowing to a NorKam rival and taking silver in the 45-kilogram class. The B.C. government is appointing nine new provincial court justices and launching a pilot project to reduce the wait time for hearing child protection cases. Attorney General Sh i rl e y B ond announced Tuesday that two judges will be assigned to work with Chief Judge Thomas Crabtree on the child protection case management project this spring, and a second pilot program to reduce criminal court waiting times. Two of the new judges will be assigned to Surrey, the busiest provincial court in the province. One each will go to Port Coquitlam, North Vancouver, Vancouver, Kamloops-Okanagan and the northeast district. The changes are based on a review of B.C. court delays by lawyer Geoffrey Cowper, who called for a system to enforce timely hearings of evidence, to overcome a “culture of delay” and a tendency of defence lawyers to seek delays that weaken the prosecution case. The B.C. Crown Counsel Association has also identified Nanaimo and Richmond as having excessive delays. Association president Samiran Lakshman said in Surrey, it takes 14 months or more to schedule a half a day for a brief trial. Bond said the extra judges bring the B.C. total to 132 full-timeequivalent, with each judge and support staff costing $1.6 million a year. “The addition of nine new judges and the backlog reduction projects – and specifically the assignment of judicial resources to those projects – sign a shared understanding by all parties that changes need to be made to improve the justice system,” Bond said. Cowper noted that 98 per cent of criminal cases end with a guilty

Enderby opens Santa’s Workshop

Kids are invited to do some Christmas shopping at Santa’s Workshop in Enderby. Children aged 12 and under can take part in a Kids Only Shopping Spree today from 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. “The donations this year have been fantastic,” said Jackie Pearase, co-ordinator. “We have great gifts for mom, dad, grandparents, siblings and everyone in between.” Volunteers have spent the last month cleaning, sorting, fixing and organizing the many donations brought in by the public for the various shopping events being held over the next week. “Today and Saturday are dedicated to helping youngsters pick out suitable gifts for the people on their Christmas lists then wrapping up their selections so they get to share in the true excitement of giving something that no one else knows about,” said Tracy Ell, co-ordinator. The selection includes everything: household items, toys,

The province has granted a one-year reprieve from its directive that health workers wear a mask this flu season if they refuse to be vaccinated. Those who don’t comply won’t be disciplined, deputy health minister Graham Whitmarsh said in a letter to health authorities. Enforcement that was to begin Dec. 1 is on hold while the ministry carries out more consultation with unions and other affected staff to help determine how best to fully implement the flu control policy, he said. Provincial health officer Dr. Perry Kendall gave the needle-or-mask order this summer, citing an inadequate flu immunization rate of less than 50 per cent among B.C. health care workers despite free shots and much encouragement. But unions denounced the policy as a privacy violation, saying the threat of discipline to compel unvaccinated workers to wear masks would have forced them to disclose their decision not to get a flu shot. Those who did get vaccinated were expected to wear badges or pins to assure patients they were immunized. Health Sciences Association of B.C. president Reid Johnson said the union encourages its members to be vaccinated but defends their right to choose. “If they choose not to be vaccinated for any number of factors – including experiences with bad side effects to vaccines and fundamental, philosophical, or religious objections to vaccination – that is their right,” he said. Rather than enforcing a season-long order to mask up, he said, that step can be taken during an actual flu outbreak, along with other long-standing options such as relocating staff or having them stay home. Hospital Employees’ Union spokesperson Margi Blamey said some members questioned the research on the benefits of vaccination, while others refuse to have foreign substances put in their bodies or considered it a human right to make their own decision. According to Kendall’s office, more than 60 per cent of full-time health workers are now vaccinated. A ministry spokesperson called the decision not to enforce in the transitional year a “balanced and measured approach.” The rule was to apply to hospitals, long-term care homes and other publicly funded health facilities and included health authority staff, doctors, volunteers, students, contractors and vendors who work in patient contact areas. The ministry will continue to encourage workers to get vaccinated to reduce the risk of flu transmission to vulnerable patients and seniors.

Lumby firefighters are taking a break from their regular duties to help Santa Claus. Members of the volunteer department will hold a Christmas toy drive at Super A Foods Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “We’re always amazed at the tremendous support we receive from the residents of Lumby and area,” said Cory Rudsvick, a firefighter. “Each year, we receive hundreds of toys and cash donations that go directly to families in need. We receive gifts for all ages, from toddlers to teens.”

Vernon glee club shares its love of singing The Beatles’ music that inspired Across the Universe KRISTIN FRONEMAN Morning Star Staff

It sounds like a musical a certain supergroup from the ‘60s would have written. A young British lad named Jude sets sail from Liverpool to the U.S., meets a girl named Lucy, and immerses himself in the burgeoning rock ‘n’ roll culture amid the turbulent years of anti-war protests, the struggle for free speech, and the civil rights movement. Throw in a few psychedelic mind trips, and you have just a taste of Across the Universe. For those who have seen the 2007 musical film directed by Julie Taymor, and featuring cameos by the likes of Eddie Izzard as Mr. Kite, Bono as an existential drug guru, and Joe Cocker as a homeless person, Across the Universe stands out for many reasons. The story spans a decade that to this day remains one of the most revolutionary, but it’s the music that resonates. The film incorporates 34 compositions originally written by, you guessed it, The Beatles. Across the Universe is about to get a new life on the stage when the Vernon Community Music School’s glee club presents its version at the Powerhouse Theatre in Vernon Dec. 14 to 16. “We’re actually performing 26 songs that will take people through the British Invasion up into the psychedelic, spiritual era,” said glee club director and VCMS vocal instructor Therese Parent. This is the second time the club has brought a famed musical film to the stage. Last January, members presented the ABBA music from Mamma Mia! to three sold-out houses at the Powerhouse Theatre, and this year they are hoping to do the same. And

They will know the music. It’s amazing when you talk to teenagers or talk to adults, they all know The Beatles,” said Parent. With both new and familiar faces joining the club for this production, almost all of them auditioned to perform solos. The club’s mandate is to give everyone a chance to perform, said Parent, adding those expecting the songs to be performed the way The Beatles did them originally should expect a surprise. “It’s a different twist on their music. It’s all (The Beatles’) lyrics but done in a different way,” said one of the original glee club members Lori Hancock, who performed The Winner Takes It All in Mamma Mia! and this time will perform Let it Be. “You wouldn’t know that some of our members haven’t performed before — now they own it.” To some of those more seasoned members of the group who grew up with the Fab Four’s music, performing such iconic songs in a different manner has been an exciting challenge. “We take I Wanna Hold Your Hand, which is a rock song, and the way we’re doing it is a ballad,” said Michael Wardlow, who plays an older version of Jude and will open and close the show with a solo. “I am an old rock ‘n roller and listened to The Beatles all the time in my youth, so I was prepped to do the

show. Then I got the CD (of the film) and thought ‘oh, God,’ but I am thrilled with the way it has turned out.” The glee members will not just be standing there pumping out The Beatles’ catalogue, there’s a lot of dance, movement, and drama in the show, said Allison Inkpen, who performed in Mamma Mia! with a broken leg and this time is looking forward to actually moving around in the show to perform two solos. “We stage these vignettes that are centered around the music. There’s more dynamic choreography,” she said, adding 17-year-old Melea Ward has come in to choreograph the show, and will dance in the song Something. The club has also welcomed other special guests to perform. One of them is no stranger to singing in front of thousands of rock fans around the world. Vernon’s Darby Mills, of Headpins fame, is slated to bring her multi-octave vocals to Don’t Let Me Down. “Therese used to see The Headpins in Regina and didn’t realize Darby lived here. I know Darby, so I asked her if she could be part of the show, and she couldn’t commit at first, but then I received a phone call from her and she was in,” said Hancock, adding “Therese has done a massive job of picking the right songs for each singer... She has amazing insight.” The club has also enlisted local actor Clive Goodrich to get “trippy” (without hallucino-

gens, of course) in Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite and joining Hancock in singing Let it Be is young talent Lynley Gordon-Mason, a student of Parent’s who is only 11 years old. John Phillips is also bringing along his mandolin to perform in Blackbird, while a live band, consisting of Mike Parent, Rod Neufeld, Elishiva Phillips, Peter McKillop, and Luke Mortensen, is backing the singers in all the numbers. “We were able to do some fundraising this year and get some sponsors on board to upgrade our sound,” said Parent, adding new headset microphones will be used so every singer can be heard loud and clear. “We really appreciate the sponsors support.... It makes for a better show and helps us cover the technical aspects, the costuming, makeup, the production team and the theatre rental.” The glee club is also giving back by donating proceeds from Across the Universe to the VCMS’ Sound Foundation Campaign to build a new foundation and conduct repairs on the 100-plus-year-old Smith House, where the music school is housed. “We raised $7,000 from Mamma Mia! for the campaign and we are hoping to match that,” said Parent. he second album from Vernon bluesman Les Copeland is a pared down, focused recording that emphasizes acoustic country blues and boogie raunch. It Ain’t Easy Being Sleezy is a trio effort. Copeland is joined by Bill Haner on bass and Charlie Fisher on drum. The recording begins to take off on the second track, Caught Up in Your Love, an evocative acoustic backwoods blues chant that kicks in with a high holler, then moves on to some skipping slide work. Tracks like these are where Copeland shines, displaying an affinity for past sounds that’s uncanny. The song mixes in quick picking and a sparse vocal, leaving the space between to provide the atmosphere. The LCB’s sound shifts on to some grinding blues rock that has the crank/distortion button pushed on with the volume high. Big Mouth is a change in sound for Copeland and the song’s sinewy drive and nasty vocal recall Big Sugar’s cranked take on blues riffs. Copeland’s vocal and dirty guitar entwine in a tough union of bad attitude that’s a contemporary update of blues rock. The cautionary tale Billie Joe and A Shack Out in the Woods are lyrically driven ideas that recall Bobbi Gentry and John Lee Hooker in their themes of rough

Killing Them Softly

illing them softly is the preferred method of gangster heavy Jackie Cogan (Brad Pitt). By keeping his distance and not making things personal, Jackie believes the business of murder is less stressful for both he and his victims. Unfortunately, it seems even in the world of professional tough guys, life gets in the way Taylor & Howe of day-to-day business and everybody wants to talk about it. We say, “It’s a boring movie disguised as a clever movie.” TAYLOR: I think this movie shoots itself in the foot. The plot is simple: three dumb guys rob a gangster poker game and then have to deal with the consequences. But this isn’t only a gangster movie. The setting is during the 2008 Obama election, around the time of the Wall Street bailout. The film makes a narrative of a political and economic siren’s song. So much so that it takes away from what should have been the focus. HOWE: It felt like they had a concept of a movie that lasted roughly over an hour and 15 minutes and that was just a tad too short. Instead of spicing the storyline up a little, they cheaped out, throwing in 15 minutes worth of election speeches here and there to fill it up. I feel a snooze coming on. TAYLOR: Everyone in this movie is suffering under the American way and I get the point this film makes about trickle-down “gangsternomics.” I just don’t care. If they had focused more on

Brad Pitt stars as gangster Jackie Cogan in Killing Them Softly. the idiot gangsters, it could have been a dark comedy. As it was I just felt sorry for all these sweaty losers, doomed to count out their last, few paranoid hours before becoming statistics. This is a film of political, economical and social satire that isn’t funny, mashed into a world of monsters with issues and ultra-violence, rather than the other way around. One heist at a time, fellas. HOWE: I can see what director/ writer Andrew Dominik was after — a Tarantino type movie, and to some extent he was able to pull it off; the long convoluted conversations, the old style music and lots of blood. But to me it just doesn’t work, there’s something lacking. TAYLOR: The subtext takes over. They put a bunch of tough guys together and made a gangster film about econom-

A quiet farming community is about to have a mystery on its hands when North Okanagan Junior Academy stages A Spallumcheen Christmas Mystery on Saturday. This original musical theatre production, starring NOJA students from kindergarten to Grade 8, is set in the 1920s in the township of Spallumcheen and centers around the reactions of the towns-

people when a stranger arrives to the Grandview Flats area — a big deal considering it was then, and still is, a tight-knit community. “The ending is a mystery to everyone that will not be revealed until the final scene of the play on the night of the performance,” said director Laurisa Defehr, adding only two people know how the play ends.
