Season to give Nanaimo charities are feeling the pinch this year CHRIS BUSH/THE NEWS BULLETIN

Loyd Sherry, former Nanaimo city councillor, rings up donations in front of the liquor store at Terminal Park Plaza. Sherry is one of dozens of volunteers across the city taking time out to collect cash for local charities and food banks over the holiday season.

BY NIOMI PEARSON THE NEWS BULLETIN

All they want for Christmas is a little help from their friends. With just over two weeks to go before Christmas and with numbers down across the board, Nanaimo’s local charities are feeling the pressure but remain hopeful the Harbour City will pull through for

families and pets in need. “Quite simply, we need the food,” said Jim Duddridge, Christmas Hamper Program spokesman. “This is the first time in Nanaimo since I’ve been doing this that I’ve been at a point where I say we’re going to be hard pressed to get enough food in here. “We’ve got time to turn it around but if we don’t reverse this trend soon, we’re

VOL. 24, NO. 95 going to be in trouble.” The Christmas Hamper Program, in partnership with the Salvation Army and Loaves and Fishes food bank, collects, organizes and distributes hampers to registered families and individuals. This year, while registrations are down, Duddridge said he still anticipates more than 2,000 hampers will be handed out, helping more than 5,000 residents. Duddridge estimated there is a 6,000-kilogram deficit from the amount of food collected this time last year. “We’re still forecasting we’re going to be low enough in food that we probably will have to cut back on some of the hampers,” he said. “The amount of food we’re asking them to stretch over 10 days is challenging. “The good news is we have lots of volunteers helping and sorting.” For ideas on how to donate, please visit www.hamperville nanaimo.org, or call 250-7519780. Donations are also down for the Great Nanaimo Toy Drive, said director Carolyn Iles. “It appears to be somewhat slower than collections have been in previous years, but we’re sure Nanaimo will come through in the next couple of weeks,” she said. “We could really use cash donations if people are too busy to purchase toys. This helps us top up the toys in various age categories wherein toys are not donated.” The toys will be distributed Dec. 19-20. In the meantime, drive organizers will work on setting up the distribution centre. Donations of new toys can be taken to Woodgrove Centre, North Town Centre, Country Club Centre, all Nanaimo fire halls, Coastal Community Credit Unions and the Port Theatre. One of the toy drive’s biggest revenue generators is the Nanaimo News Bulletin’s Pennies for Presents campaign, which collects change to give to the toy drive, the Nanaimo Boys and Girls Club and the Salvation Army to ensure no child is left empty handed at Christmas time. “We think that this is going to be a good year,” said Jenn McGarrigle, campaign coordinator. “Since the federal government is phasing out use of the penny, we

NANAIMO

hope people looking to rid themselves of the copper coins will donate them. If everyone gives a little, it goes a long way for the children in our community.” For a list of penny drop-off points, please go to www.nanaimobulletin.com. Meanwhile, the Salvation Army’s Dawne Anderson is looking for more volunteers to help cover 100 kettle shifts a day ((please see related story, page 4). 4 The answer as to why donations are down is a mystery to local charity organizers. “I think it takes a bit for some people to get into the Christmas spirit,” Anderson said. “Nanaimo is awesome at their donating so I’m hoping they pull through for us.” Those inclined to help our furry friends in the yuletide season should take note that the Nanaimo SPCA does not take donations of dry food. “Hills Science Diet have, for a couple of years now, been donating as much food as the animals can eat for free,” said Leon Davis, branch manager. “So to keep them on a consistent diet, we don’t feed them other brands of donated food.” He added that dry food donations that do come to the shelter are given to the Loaves and Fishes food bank for distribution in the hamper program. The SPCA will gratefully accept donations of things like clean towels, pet toys, cleaning supplies, paper towel, wet (canned) dog and cat food, and printer paper. With the ringworm outbreak that occurred earlier this year, the shelter was set back about $20,000 and every little donation helps the bottom line. “I know it’s not very sexy to donate office supplies but we have to have record management for every animal and all their medical stuff,” Davis said. The Nanaimo SPCA is looking to adopt approximately 100 of the animals in care between Nov. 25 and Dec. 25. Davis said they are about 60 adoptions away from that goal, with 86 animals currently in care. “It’s ambitious,” Davis said. “To adopt 60 animals in a month is kind of average, so to do it in [less than] three weeks, I think is very do-able.” ◆ See ‘SHELTER’ /4

If we don’t reverse this trend soon, we’re going to be in trouble.

HYDRO CREWS rescue cat stuck on power pole. BY CHRIS BUSH

A jolt of electricity meant life to Frankenstein’s monster, but it would have meant certain death for a terrified, exhausted cat named after the fictitious scientist that was stranded atop a utility pole in Nanaimo Wednesday. Frankenstein’s saga started in front of his home at 408 Milton St. about 10 a.m. when he was chased up a utility pole by a big yellow dog, neighbours said. If black cats bring bad luck, Frankenstein had plenty of the opposite cross his path throughout the day. In his flight, he scrambled about six metres up the pole and found a perch on an insulator surrounded by wires feeding 120 volt power to a house. Unfortunately Frankenstein couldn’t figure out how to get back down, so there he sat, centimetres away from power lines that could kill him with one touch, meowing for help, for the next six hours.

By late after noon Frankenstein was exhausted and getting desperate. When attempts by neighbours and passersby to coax the frightened cat down failed, they tried calling police and Nanaimo Fire Rescue. But cat rescues from utility poles are not in the emergency services area of expertise. Frankenstein’s having a bad year, said one neighbour. He got hit by a car this summer. Frankenstein, 7, has lived at 408 Milton all his life. His original owners took him with them when they moved, but he kept returning to the home he’d always known. The home’s owner, Don LePan, finally agreed to keep him. LePan arrived home from work to find a small gathering of neighbours plus two B.C. Hydro linemen in front of his home who responded to calls for help and was shocked to see his cat up the utility pole. “You hang in there, Frankenstein,” LePan yelled up to his cat. A bucket truck had been dispatched to the scene, but with all trucks and crews out repairing power lines damaged from a wind storm Tuesday, it took a while before a

truck could respond. Just as the truck was about to arrive on scene, Frankenstein figured he’d have a more room to perch on top of the pole and mustered his dwindling strength to shimmy the rest of the way up to crouch under a power line carrying 14,000 volts. If Frankenstien lifted his head a few centimetres it meant instantly an explosion of current. “Don’t look,” said Brian Gueldenstern, B.C. Hydro lineman, certain the cat was done for. “You don’t want to watch a cat die like this.” Gueldenstern and his coworker, Tim Somerville, rushed to cut power to the block, hoping to save the cat. With the power down and the bucket truck on scene, it took Gueldenster n, Somerville and co-workers Shane Sandferd and Jason Yanda mere moments to set up the truck, pluck Frankenstein from the pole and reunite him with his owner just before 5 p.m. “I can’t thank everyone enough,” LePan said to the linemen and neighbours after rushing his exhausted pet into his home. “Thank you all so much for all your help.” photos@nanaimobulletin.com

More volunteers are needed to help with the Nanaimo Salvation Army’s annual Christmas Kettle campaign this holiday season. Hundreds of bellringing and carol-singing volunteers donate their time to the campaign each year, but at this stage, a couple hundred empty shifts remain between now and Christmas, said envoy Dawne Anderson, Salvation Army fundraising coordinator. “We need lots more volunteers,” she said. “Some people are doing it every day, but I’m

sure they’re going to start to get burnt out. We’ve gone through most of the people who have said they would be on board, so we need some fresh blood.” It is a constant battle for Anderson to fill the 100 daily shifts on kettles at 25 different locations from North Nanaimo to Ladysmith. If no one can be found to man a kettle, that means lost revenue for the Salvation Army, which uses the money raised for the community services work it does – the emergency shelter, food hampers, the meals program, clothing and furniture for underprivileged individuals and fami-

lies, counselling and referral services and affordable housing. The organization expects to give out at least 2,300 Christmas hampers to local families. “It’s huge to have all our kettle shifts filled,” said Anderson. This year’s fundraising goal is $400,000 between the organization’s mail-in donations and the kettle campaign. Last year, the kettles brought in slightly more than $200,000. To volunteer, please call Anderson at 250740-1004, 250-716-6595 or e-mail kettles@sananaimo.org. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

while the SPCA does not encourage animals to be given as Christmas gifts, the holidays can be a good time for a family to make a collective, responsible decision to bring a new pet into the home, when there is plenty of time to spend on helping it get settled. At least two of the collisions occurred in marked crosswalks. “What we’ve learned from these tragedies is not only the weather, but darkness and a lack of reflective gear played a part, said Ted Swabey, the city’s general manager for development services. “We want to bring this to everybody’s attention, especially during the holiday season, that it is everybody’s responsibility to drive safe and pay attention to pedestri-

Public Art is created by artists for publicly visible sites. It can increase the sense of place and energize public spaces and the City as a whole. Some art pieces can be permanent (such as the "Pacific Sails" on the Harbourfront Walkway), while others are temporary (such as pieces in Maffeo Sutton Park).

the Earth is the key to human existence. Doesn’t it make sense to take care of it?” And Michael Welbank, past president of Britain’s Royal Town Planning Institute, asserts, “How can we possibly take any new land for development and claim we have discharged our responsibilities to future generations? It is a finite resource and however little each generation uses, in time it will all be used … We need a greater effort to ensure the reuse of previously developed land as a continuous process until we reach the stage where new land is never taken.” And we need to stop behaving like finicky aristocrats who want never to be “soiled” or “dirty.” Dirt is good for us in an earthy way that is priceless. ◆ Marjorie Stewart is chairwoman of the Nanaimo Foodshare Society. EDITORIAL

Help needed in tough g times The economic crunch that enveloped the world in 2008 is far from a thing of the past. Despite claims by politicians that Canada – as well as B.C. – has weathered the storm better than other countries and provinces, one just has to look a little less globally and little more locally to see it’s not true. More and more people are suffering in Nanaimo. Food banks are seeing an increase in the number of children, seniors and families registering for their services. Even those with jobs are not immune to the tough times we are experiencing. The working poor often has to decide on a roof over their head or food on the table. Others might have to forego any semblance of Christmas, including gifts for children, so that rent or medical bills get paid. With this increasing demand on Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank and the Salvation Army which help the lessfortunate, comes a demand on other organizations fundraising cash, food and toys for those non-profit providers. And that demand can only be filled by the generosity of the public. The ‘fortunate’ who are being tugged in every direction with requests to give, and then give more. For it’s not just Hamperville or the Great Nanaimo Toy Drive that needs help. Haven and Hospice societies, the United Way, even Nanaimo SPCA have campaigns underway – all to help others. And while times are more than tough, thankfully Nanaimo has a history of pulling together and coming through for those in need. There’s still time to make a difference and give those who face the possibility of a bleak holiday season a little Christmas cheer. And even if there is only a little to give, it doesn’t matter. Because every little bit counts. The Nanaimo News Bulletin is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. you’re dead because the car didn’t – or couldn’t – stop. Two close calls come to mind when running at night. In both cases we were well into the crosswalk but drivers barrelled through, forcing me in one case to pull my wife, and the other my daughter, out of harm’s way. I bet neither driver did it on purpose and were probably as shook up as we were. They simply didn’t see us despite the fact we were in the crosswalk, under street lights and wearing reflective clothing. Yes, we were completely in the right, but it wouldn’t matter much had either vehicle hit us. Both drivers and pedestrians have responsibilities and I know when I walk or drive at night, my head is on a swivel, making eye contact at every chance. But when you get right down to it, a walker or runner will never win in a confrontation with a motor vehicle, so the onus is on them. Be seen and you will be safe. Whether it’s a reflective vest, flashing lights or simply a flashlight, make sure that driver knows you are there. Bite your tongue and take a deep breath when that driver doesn’t stop at the crosswalk for you. It’s only a delay of a couple of seconds. And besides, you’re out there in the dark and cold and wet for stress-relieving exercise. Take the high road. In the end it will be the safe road. news@nanaimobulletin.com

All road users must take care

To the Editor, Re: Season calls for road safety, Opinion, Nov. 20. The editorial makes some excellent points in response to the tragic death of a 28-year-old cyclist on Wall Street on Nov. 16. We agree all road users must take extra measures during the winter months. Motorists must respect speed limits and keep a keen eye for more vulnerable road users. Cyclists must also observe the rules of the road, as required by the Motor Vehicle Act. However, these measures alone are not enough to ensure the safety of cyclists. Cycle routes must be well laid-out, adequately illuminated and safe – which is often not the case in the Nanaimo. Our hope is that the timely implementation of the Transportation Master Plan will lead

the city to invest in the necessary highquality infrastructure such as segregated bike lanes to make cycling in Nanaimo truly safe, convenient and enjoyable. Our organization is also concerned about the general media response to this fatality, which in some cases implicitly blamed the cyclist because he wasn’t

wearing a helmet and because the bicycle lacked lights. First, while our organization encourages cyclists to wear helmets, it is important to point out that whether a cyclist is wearing a helmet in no way lessens motorists’ responsibility to drive safely. As for proper lighting, we strongly encourage cyclists to

equip their bicycles with the legally required front and rear lights and reflectors. As to whether the cyclist had in fact exceeded the legal alcohol limit, our organization will await the final police or coroner’s report. David Grey chairman Greater Nanaimo Cycling Coalition

Hamas attacks justify Israeli ‘aggression’ To the Editor, Re: Support for Israel furthers atrocities; Palestine stance erases objectivity, Letters, Dec. 4. When writers refer to Israeli “aggression” against Gaza, I wonder what their perspective is on the thousands of rockets fired out of Gaza into Israel by the Islamic Hamas movement and other anti-Jewish factions. The latest Israeli retaliation was provoked by Hamas firing their latest Iranian-supplied missiles, which can now reach major cities in Israel. Am I missing something by believing, like our government, that Israel has a right to exist and defend itself ? I agree with Lloyd Atkins who, as master of the obvious, claims negotiating peace agreements requires imagi-

nation and compromise. But it also requires two countries, or in this case, one country and one geographical entity, who both want peace. As long as there are Palestinian Arabs who opt to be governed by Hamas, whose sole raison d’etre is to obliterate Israel, there will obviously be no peace. As for the suggestion that Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird “bang a shoe on the podium” during his next United Nations visit, I say why waste energy. I’d rather he simply tell the UN that we’ve had enough of their corrupt, dysfunctional organization and we’re pulling out. My rationale for that would require another letter. Jim Corder Nanaimo

Consumers will pay for recycling change To the Editor, Re: Plan will shift recycling costs, Nov. 27. I don’t know how anyone can think the taxpayer/consumer will not be paying the tab for this change in where recycling costs are placed. Any extra fees that the manufacturers and stores are assessed will be recovered through higher pricing. Some of the largest contributors of non-recycled waste – the food industry, and especially the fastfood industry – are among the Multi-Material British Columbia group. They should change how they package their products as a first step. J. Sharpe Nanaimo

active life Exercise smooths road to recovery BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN

D

on Varney never thought going to the hospital for knee replacement surgery would lead to him spending more than two months in a coma. After surgery, he contacted an antibiotic resistant bacteria and went into septic shock. His liver began to shut down and one of his lungs collapsed. He was sent to the intensive care unit at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria where they induced a coma. During that time, he was also placed on kidney dialysis for a month. “I was pretty desperate. I don’t remember much of it,” said Varney. When he returned home he tried to get back in shape. Always an active individual, Varney was a physical education teacher early in his career, later taught math and was school counsellor. He was also involved in Nanaimo’s basketball scene for a number of years. “I’ve always been concerned about fitness,” he said. Varney started with cardio exercises on an elliptical trainer, and at first could only manage 90-second spurts. However, he didn’t let that deter him. “I kept working away on it,” he said. “You stop trying, you start dying.” Varney said his daughter inspires him to continue working and striving for improved fitness. She was diagnosed with leukemia and has fought the disease for the past 11 years. “She is a gem,” he said. “She’s so upbeat. She never complains. I could never feel sorry for myself.” Varney, 76, said he continues to carry on with his exercise routine. The senior enjoys to exercise at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre because the city facility offers flexibility with year-long, monthly or drop-in passes. He also loves having the convenience of a number of amenities in one place.

RACHEL STERN/THE NEWS BULLETIN

Don Varney enjoys the gym and facilities at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre. He uses the equipment to aid in recovering from a health issue that led to medical personnel putting him in a coma for more than two months.

He often works out in the centre’s weight room and then heads to the hot tub and steam room. The weight room has a variety of machines to meet people’s workout routines. Attendants work select hours during the day and can answer questions on how to use certain pieces of equipment or how to attempt new exercises.

The weight room is open seven days a week at varying hours. People looking to ramp up their fitness routines can also meet with one of the centre’s personal trainers and purchase a personal workout package. The trainers help develop programs to meet individual fitness goals and level of ability. There are also various weight

room courses people can sign up for throughout the year. The courses are advertised in the city’s parks, recreation and culture activity guide. Holidays mean exercise BY AMANDA DALY

First there was Halloween quickly followed by Thanksgiving. And Christmas dinners, holiday parties, and all the wonderful treats will be here before you know it. Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, candy, chocolate, cookies … the list goes on. But this doesn’t mean your healthy eating and active lifestyle has to go out the door. The trick is not overdoing it and staying active, whatever your active looks like. That’s where Nanaimo parks, recreation and culture comes in. We are here to keep you motivated and provide you with tips to enjoy an active holiday season. Challenge yourself to exercise at least three times a week during the holidays. You don’t have to run a marathon – take a brisk walk after dinner, try out the new equipment at one of our fitness centres or spend some family time at our arenas or pools. Parks, recreation and culture can help you stay on track with our fitness holiday schedule at Oliver Woods Community Centre. Can’t make it to Oliver Woods? Try a drop-in aquafit class

at Nanaimo Aquatic Centre or free everyone welcome skating on Sundays. Skate the Rideau Canal at our Winter Wonderland Dec. 26-30 at the Frank Crane Arena. It is a great place to spend time and stay active with family. Help others stay active, too, by giving the gift of health and fitness. Gift cards are a great gift idea for all the people on your gift list – even the impossible ones. They are a simple and thoughtful way to encourage friends, family and co-workers to live an active lifestyleand can be purchased at recreation centres and come in dominations of $20, $50 and $100. They can be used to pay for program registration, RecPasses,

Jane Anne Paul

LOST AND FOUND FOUND: Men’s watch on Robin Hood Dr. (250)758-4425

Devoted wife, mother and friend, passed away Friday, November 30, 2012 in her 79th year. She was the matriarch to an extensive family and a devoted servant to the Lord. Born March 28, 1933 as the only child to Charles and Vera Funk in Brockville, Ontario, Jane was an active member of her school. Jane took her training as a Registered Nurse through Sick Kids in Toronto and graduated from the program in 1956. On March 2 1957, in Brockville she married Richard (Dick) Paul and they began a wonderful life together, with a love that bound them through their faith in Christ.

Jane and Dick welcomed daughters, Elizabeth (Liz) and Martha and brought into their lives son, Steven when they moved to Montreal. Jane helped establish roots in every new town through the Presbyterian Church in Windsor, Montreal, Toronto, Owen Sound, and Everett Washington before settling in North Vancouver, BC. As a faithful servant to the Lord, throughout her life, she was active in the Presbyterian Church. She served numerous roles including a Sunday school teacher, church elder, Bethel teacher, Stephen minister and lastly as a prayer partner. During her summers, she would serve as a nurse and head cook at Camp Douglas. Jane and Dick travelled to Indonesia where as a nurse and family practitioner, she consulted with doctors by radio. When Jane and Dick had become full time missionaries they were assigned to Kinshasa, Zaire. In Africa, Jane’s roles included hospitality, leprocy mission and secretary for the medical clinic. After ďŹ ve years, the Pauls were relocated to Nyankunde in eastern Zaire. For another ďŹ ve years, acting as base nurse, Jane continued to welcome other new missionaries to Africa, acted as host to travelers, held Bible studies, ight following and teaching English as a Second Language.

sports Nanaimo Utd. takes to pitch versus Gorge Gorge FC isn’t having the best of seasons, but it’s not a team to be taken lightly and Nanaimo United knows that. United (8-4-1) hosts Gorge (2-10-1) tonight (Dec. 8) in Vancouver Island Soccer League Div. 1 men’s action. Just as United has added some Vancouver Island University players recently, Gorge has added some University of Victoria players. “So they’re going to be a lot stronger team than what the standings are showing,” said Tony Maestrello, United midfielder. “It should be a really good, tough battle.” He said his team will need to try to play its own game, keeping the ball on the turf and moving it quickly to the outside of the pitch and then back inside. Coach John Valentim said United’s ball movement has been excellent, which makes for good soccer for the fans to watch. “They like to see a soccer game where the ball can circulate properly – good passing, good defending, good attacking. That’s exactly what Nanaimo is doing this year,” Valentim said. “It’s always playing with the head, then the feet goes after. And the movement, it’s very nice to watch.” GAME ON … Nanaimo United and Gorge FC play tonight at 7 p.m. at Merle Logan Field. Admission is always free at the turf field … It’s the last action of 2012 for United, who won’t have another league match until Jan. 19.

TEAM PLAYS final home tilt of 2012.

BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

The Nanaimo Clippers will try to take down the high-flying Surrey Eagles. The city’s B.C. Hockey League team plays its final home game of 2012 on Sunday (Dec. 9) as it hosts the league’s hottest team in a matinee. It’s the only action of the weekend for the Clippers and they’re viewing it as an important game, a chance to right the ship before a series of road games. “We need to get the ball rolling here heading into that long road trip,” said Kyle Kramer, alternate captain. “A win here could start the ball rolling.” The Clippers have lost three in a row and “haven’t been happy with anything” over t h o s e g a m e s, s a i d Kramer. “We’ve got a little bit of a burr in the saddle right now,” he said earlier this week. “And I think it’s a perfect opportunity to have a long week of practice, fix some things in our game and then come out on Sunday and have a good performance.” The Clippers (14-110-2) haven’t played the Eagles (17-7-0-2) yet this season, but Surrey tends to ice speedy teams with skilled forwards. “Anytime you play a

Buccaneers win, eye big game BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

The first-placed Nanaimo Buccaneers won again and gave themselves a chance to try for a perfect weekend. The Bucs beat the Campbell River Storm 4-1 on Thursday at the Nanaimo Ice Centre, then played the Storm again Friday up Island after press time. Tonight (Dec. 8) Nanaimo plays its third game in three days when it takes on the Oceanside Generals in Parksville. The Bucs were shorthanded due to both illness and injury on Thursday, but affiliate player Curtis McCarrick stepped in and scored two goals, his first

at the junior level. Will McNamara and Derian Hamilton had Nanaimo’s other markers and Riley Medves got the win in goal. Shots were 29-29. A turning point in the game came late in the second period with Nanaimo up 2-0. Hamilton’s breakaway goal to make it 3-0 was only possible because Medves made an acrobatic save on a Storm three-onone seconds earlier. “If that goes in, all of a sudden it’s a totally different hockey game,” said Brad Knight, Nanaimo coach. The coach said his team skated well and had good control of the puck in the offensive zone. “It’s nice to have that

confidence and be playing some good hockey so you have something to reference to,” said Medves. For example, the Bucs know they haven’t had their best games against the Generals this season, so they’ll look to do better and take a lead in the season series, currently 3-3. “Because there’s so many Nanaimo kids on that [Oceanside] team, it’s a real nice, competitive rivalry; it’s a positive rivalry and it’s always exciting when we play them,” Knight said. GAME ON … The Bucs (14-11-2) and Gens (10-14-2) face off tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Oceanside Place in Parksville. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

team like that you’ve got to be hard to play against, be sound in your defensive zone and manage the puck well with no turnovers, because a team like that can counterattack real quick and can make you pay,” said Kramer. Also on Sunday, the Clippers will be holding their annual Christmas hamper drive. The club is encouraging fans to bring a non-perishable food item that will then be directed to Hamperville Nanaimo. “We are well aware that the need is great for food in our community, particularity at this time of year,” said Jen Kennedy, the club’s director of sales and marketing, in a press release. “We do food drives throughout our season, but our fans are always the most generous at this time of year.” GAME ON … The Clippers and Eagles face off Sunday at 3 p.m. … The following weekend the Clippers play road games at Chilliwack, Penticton and Trail. sports@nanaimobulletin.com
