Rimbey housing costs lower than the average By Treena Mielke Potential homeowners might want to check out Rimbey to get the best bang for their buck when they shell out for a new home. A report by Coldwell Banker Canada comparing housing prices for the first half of 2012 states a fourbedroom, two-bathroom home can be purchased in Rimbey for an average price of $201,950. According to the report, the only other community with even lower affordable housing was Windsor, Ont. whose average price for the same housing came in at $170,000. Mayor Sheldon Ibbotson believes people are beginning to see Rimbey as a community of choice. He noted $9 million in commercial and residential development permits have been issued this year, a clear indication that the town is flourishing. “That is a good number for this town,” he said. Ibbotson pointed out that low-cost housing is only one of the attributes Rimbey offers, noting the town’s hospital, the RCMP detachment, the community centre, recreation services and schools are also drawing cards. “We’re that hidden gem in central Alberta people need to find,” he said. Jeff Collins, a realtor with Cold-

well Banker Ontrack Realty in Rimbey agreed. “I think Rimbey is number 1. You can’t beat Rimbey or the people here.” Collins, who has been in the real estate business for 20 years in Rimbey, said the town is centrally located making both major airports easily accessible. He also noted the town is near recreational centres making it appealing to families. People who live in Rimbey and work in Fort McMurray may do so because the average cost of a fourbedroom, two-bathroom home in that community runs approximately $608,655. Fort McMurray ranks 69th on Coldwell Banker’s list, Red Deer ranks 35th with an average cost of $326,151 compared to Lacombe, which was slightly higher at $326,226 and took the next spot. Buying a house in Rocky Mountain House, a community about an hour west of Rimbey, is even more costly. The sample home in that community costs an average of $343,476. In a news release, John Geha, president of Coldwell Banker Canada, said affordable options are available to home buyers, even though home prices have soared in some markets across Canada.

Speed humps going in alleyway By Treena Mielke Speedsters who dare consider putting the pedal to the medal in an alley behind Drader Crescent may find themselves wishing they hadn’t. At its regular meeting Nov. 29, council agreed to have one or two speed humps installed in the alley,

put signage at the end of the alley stating the speed is 20 km/h and ask the RCMP to increase patrols in the area. Last month council agreed to postpone making a decision regarding the alley until public input was received. Continued on Page 9

Council donates to Agrim Centre By Amelia Naismith The Rimbey Ag Society will receive another $500,000 from Ponoka County council for their Agrim Centre project. At the Nov. 27 council meeting an update of the society’s endeavors were discussed, as well as considerations for next year’s budget. “They’ve proceeded to move along with their facility’s project, they’ve completed their business case study,” said County CAO Charlie Cutforth. Rimbey’s Ag Society Charlie Cuthford, CAO County of Ponoka is looking for additional funding for the centre, which is estimated to cost around $5 million once completed. “To bring it to a usable state the cost is at $2.5 million,” said Cutforth. The society has already spent money with support from the county, approximately $200,000, to buy three parcels of land, and has committed $245,000 to Ironwood for architectural drawings and steel deposits, he said. Cutforth knows more money will be coming from other sources but said it would be desirable for the county to contribute more, in addition to the $500,000 they’ve already given. “My recommendation is that, from the municipal funding program, we consider a final contribution of $500,000 to the Rimbey Ag Society.” The money disbursed from the Municipal Sustainability Initiative program. Cutforth also said the society isn’t looking for the money anytime soon but is looking for commitment so they can go to the province for other funding opportunities. “The more money you’re sitting on the better it looks, the more viable it looks to everybody.” Open Creek Dam given support Ponoka’s County council is donating $10,000 to the Rimbey Fish and Game Association to help save the Open Creek Dam from erosion damage, even though it’s outside county boundaries. Cutforth received a letter from the association, saying they want to improve the dam and are looking for support. Cutforth said a cheque for the project could be cut as early as Jan. 1. “We’re budgeted for a substantial surplus this year.” There was a inspection done on the dam, and

I tell myself no. No, I do not want to leave this cocoon of blankets and warmth and softness. No. I’m not ready to rise and shine — or even to simply rise. I want to dream some more dreams where life is all happy and good and people smile a lot, eat crazy amounts of pastries filled with whipped cream and still maintain Barbie Doll figures. I want to dream some more about warm places where love and joy and good news floats around on idyllic breezes that sigh little sighs of pure happiness. The alarm jangles a warning into my fantasies. “Get going, girl, the new day has arrived,” it says in alarm talk language. Obediently, I get going. I’ve been awake for less than three minutes when I remember what I’m supposed to do next. Exercise! Right! The benefits of exercise which seemed so clear the night before now escape me. I decide to simply imagine it is one of my good habits. I have the habit of exercising, I mutter like a welltrained zombie, zipping up my coat and stumbling out the door. One step, two steps, three steps, four. Wow! This is me. I’m doing it, I’m walking. I trudge along, my footsteps creating little tufts of white in front of me.

Alberta in the morning. White on white. Alberta in the evening. Same, only darker. This morning the temperature hovers between cold and really cold and the sky is weird; not black, not blue, but just kind of in-between. The weird blue light Treena Mielke that tells me it is very On The Other Side early yet. As I trudge along, head down, really cold hands thrust in pockets, I watch the snow come to life in the weird blue light, sparkling like a great many really expensive diamond rings. And the street lights illuminate everything, like stage lights in a magnificent, silent play. I tell myself to become one with the landscape and I won’t be so cold. I imagine golf courses and being one with the ball. I remember making two pars in a game. Okay, that would be a false memory, but, whatever, it certainly makes this walk seem more fun. I walk some more, facing reality, cold and white. I am an Alberta girl, born and raised on this prairie soil, where winter white lasts a really, really long time.

I am a windshield scraper, snow shoveller, snowman maker, hat, mitt and scarf wearer, who went through her teenage years dressing really silly in little coats, no mitts and running shoes, who has since learned to defy fashion and dress in 14 layers and wear wool socks. And because I am an Alberta girl, I know there are much better ways to wake up than to feel the sting of a thousand icicles against your face, which is what facing a north wind feels like. And yet, I’m glad that at least in most mornings I lose the argument against myself and get my complaining self out the door and go walking. I don’t miss it, then. The magic. The magic of the soft blue light of morning, the silhouettes of dark and still houses against the street lights and the hush that lies over everything. And, for that very reason, on my last walk, after I had trudged my layered self back to my own yard, I cast a quick glance around, hoped no one was watching, and allowed myself to act much younger than my years. And, later when my husband asked me who made the snow angel on our front yard, I said, “What snow angel?” But when I left for work this morning I gave the angel a secret little smile. And I swear, she smiled back.

Separatist dreams won’t be reality for nationalists In other parts of the world, separatist movements are usually violent (e.g. Kashmir, Sri Lanka, the various Kurdish revolts) and they sometimes succeed (South Sudan, Eritrea, East Timor). Whereas in the prosperous, democratic countries of the West, they are generally peaceful, frivolous and unsuccessful. A case in point is the various separatist movements in the European Union. Scotland will hold a vote on independence from Britain in 2014, and both Catalonia and the Basque country in Spain have just elected nationalist governments that promise to hold referendums on independence. But it will probably never happen. The Scots, the Catalans and the Basques tend to see themselves as victims but nobody else does. They are self-governing in most matters except defence and foreign affairs, they have their own budgets, and they maintain separate education systems and cultural institutions. What really drives the separatism is emotion, which is why popular support for it is so soft. Rectifying the historic defeat of (insert name of centuries-old lost battle here) by declaring independence in the here and now has great emotional appeal but most people put their economic interests first. Nationalist leaders therefore always promise that independence will change nothing important on the economic front. The way they do this in both Scotland and the separatist regions of Spain is by insisting membership in the European Union would pass automatically to the successor state. The opponents of secession, however, argue that there’s nothing automatic about it. Recently, when Scotland’s First Minister, Alex Salmond, agreed to the terms for the 2014 referendum with the British government, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo promptly declared that an independent Scotland would not automatically be an EU member, and that any one of the 27 EU member states (like Spain, for example) could veto it. “In the hypothetical case of independence,” he said, “Scotland would have to join the queue (for EU membership) and ask to be admitted, needing the unanimous approval of all member states to obtain the status of a candidate country.” The European Commission president, Jose Manuel Barroso, also said in September that an independent Scotland would have to apply to join. This was furiously disputed by Salmond, who knew that his chances of winning the 2014 referendum were nil if the Scots believed that they were voting to leave the EU. For months he insisted that he had sought the opinion of his government’s law officers, who had

Gwynne Dyer Guest Columnist

confirmed that Scotland would inherit EU membership automatically. Alas, he was lying. It has become known that Salmond had not actually asked for the law officers’ opinion at all. Now he has been forced by public opinion to pop the question — and he may not like the answer. An even bigger defeat for Salmond came in his negotiations with British Prime Minister David Cam-

eron, where he had to agree the referendum would ask a simple yes or no question: in or out? This goes against the instincts of all separatist leaders, who prefer a fuzzy, feel good question that doesn’t mention the frightening word “independence” at all. So it’s now quite unlikely independence will win in the Scottish referendum. As for Catalonia and Euskara, the national parliament in Madrid must approve of any referendum on separation, and the current Spanish government has no intention of doing that. So it’s mostly just hot air and hurt feelings, really. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist whose articles are published in 45 countries.

Anglin’s detractors act irrationally Dear Editor: Recently there have been two criticisms leveled at MLA Joe Anglin by Messrs. Vetsch and Finnen. Finnen questions Anglin’s honesty, and Vetsch claims confusion. MLA Anglin’s record in the legislature concerning the use of HVDC is consistent with his position since 2006. It is consistent with the analysis of Jeffrey Church, Department of Economics University of Calgary. It is consistent with the analysis by William Rosehart and John MacCormack, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Calgary. Anglin recommended the use of HVDC technology in 2006 because the Government of Alberta proposed to export electricity from Fort McMurray to California. To export electricity from Fort McMurray to California HVDC technology would most likely have been more appropriate. When the government proposed using HVDC technology only between Edmonton and Calgary, MLA Anglin and the aforementioned experts all opposed the use of HVDC on the basis that it was an uneconomic misuse of the technology. Each HVDC lines costs $1 billion more than an HVAC line, and neither line makes use of any of the advantages of HVDC. The two current transmission line proposals do not take advantage of any of the savings HVDC technology could provide. In fact, the two proposed HVDC lines are expected to add to system loss (each are designed to operate at about six per cent loss) at a time when the raw loss factor was last reported to be 2.93 per cent. Vetsch or Finnen would not know this because they didn’t ask Anglin or any of the nu-

merous experts practicing in this field. On the other hand, Anglin has met with the CEOs of all of the major companies involved in this proposal, along with many independent experts in the field of electricity generation. Mark Lisac, editor of Alberta’s independent newsletter, “Insight into Government” went so far as to described Joe Anglin as a “diligent researcher with a friendly manner.” It’s Finnen and Vetsch who are confused. All that Anglin ever did was to help Vetsch and Finnen fight a transmission line that was not needed, and now they attack him in the newspaper without first giving him the common courtesy of at least asking him about what they don’t understand. To further illustrate Finnen and Vetsch’s confusion, Vetsch says it’s the ratepayers who pay for the transmission lines and not taxpayers. This is a silly argument. Every electric bill has a line item on it called “tax.” Anyone who pays an electric bill is a taxpayer. Vetsch should know this if he would take the time to look at his bill. Finnen and Vetsch have taken comments out of context, and in one case quoted from an unreliable liberal blog, which MLA Anglin is on record refuting. If anyone needs to re-evaluate their integrity and honesty, I suggest Vetsch and Finnen look in the mirror. Why do they persist in attacking Anglin with false and inaccurate allegations? Why did Vetsch do a title search on Anglin’s house? Both opposed MLA Anglin during the spring election and now they are behaving irrationally. Both will do well to stop the nonsense. Council defers parking ban By Treena Mielke Council has given the yellow light to a decision banning big trucks from parking on a major route in town. At its regular meeting Nov. 29, council agreed to postpone a decision of enforcing a parking ban on Highway 20A (51 Street) from 50th Avenue through to the alley north of 57th Avenue to be effective from Nov. 1 to April 30. Last month, council posted an advertisement in the Rimbey Review giving notice council was considering a parking ban during the snow season. CAO Tony Goode said the ban would mean snowplows would have more access and be able to keep the street free of snow. However, council was not quick to endorse the proposal. “I would like to see if there is another solution,” said Coun. Gayle Rondeel. Several residents from Kansas Ridge Estates phase 2 signed a document that was sent to council stating they supported the bylaw.

Ken Pillman, vice-president of the Kansas Ridge Estates Association, said there have been problems with trucks parking in the area for many years. “It’s worse in the wintertime,” he said. “Some of them start up at 4:30 or 5 a.m. And on 51 Street the exhaust comes right into the condos.” However, a letter from Mary Leighton stated council needs to consider all vehicles, not just big trucks, if they want to put such a bylaw in place. She said alternative parking needs to be put in place for big trucks. “I cannot see why the town could not provide a place off-street for the heavy trucks to park, if the town doesn’t want them on the street. Alternatively, allow them to park at home and it will help the cars to get to ploughed roads when heavy snowfall occurs, as they will pack down the snow on the roads that aren’t gong to see a plough for a long time.” Council will address the issue at its Dec. 10 meeting.

Rimbey tops in hospitality at girls provincial volleyball tourney By Treena Mielke According to Scott Reiling, the Vauxall girls’ volleyball coach, Rimbey’s hospitality and friendliness shone even brighter than the gold medal his team garnered after the provincial tournament held here Nov. 22 to 24. “Don’t get me wrong, it helps receiving a gold medal, but we were blown away with the hospitality we received in Rimbey,” said Reiling, after the ASAA 2A Girls Provincial Volleyball Tournament. “Everywhere we went and everything we did, we were treated so well. We left with a smile on our faces.” Reiling was humble about Vauxall’s first-place finish. “I don’t think we were the best team there, but everything seemed to work for us.” Reiling gave credit to his team, noting that every player played her best and gave her all. “At the end of the day, it’s out of the coach’s control.” Vauxall did not begin the tournament in good form, losing its first game to StrathconaTweedsmuir School. However, they bounced back quickly, gaining momentum as the tournament progressed. “That (first game) was a heartbreaker. We didn’t execute well. After that game it seemed the girls took a deep breath and played really well.” Vauxall went on to defeat Vegreville 23-12 and 25-21 in the gold medal match Nov. 24. In the bronze medal games Spirit River Regional Academy defeated Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School 25–15 and 25-19. Rimbey Spartans coach Lisa Shukun said hosting the tournament was a great experience. was extremely proud of the Spartans who continued to play hard even though they didn’t make the playoffs. The Spartans, who finished third in areas, were playing against tough competition, she said. “It was a great experience for them and I think overall they were excited and happy, though a little disappointed they didn’t make the playoffs. Although Rimbey lost by a wide margin to Vauxall in their first game Nov. 22, they held their own the following day against Bearspaw Christian School and Mayerthorpe High School.

“They still lost, but they played much better,” said Shukun. “They never gave up.” The coach said the new gym floor in the community centre was a great boon to the tournament. “Having the new gym floor was definitely an asset. Having that floor means we can bring in other events like this. We could host basketball, as well.” Teams competing in pool A in

the tournament were Spirit River Regional Academy, Vegreville Composite High School, St. Dominic’s Catholic High School, Christ The King High School, Three Hills High School and Magrath High School. Teams in pool B were StrathconaTweedsmuir School, Vauxhall High School, Mayerthorpe High School, Bearspaw Christian School, Peace River High School and Rimbey High School.

The atmosphere among the fans who filled the bleachers at the school gym and the community centre for the recent ASAA 2A Girls Provincial Volleyball Tournament was charged with excitement. The tournament, held Nov. 22 to 24, gave Rimbey Spartans a first-time opportunity to play host to 11 high school volleyball teams from schools throughout Alberta. It also gave volunteers, school staff, coaches and Rimbey itself, a chance to showcase the community as a friendly, hospitable town. According to comments from players and parents, it was an opportunity well taken. “It is very well organized,” said Doug Broadhead who was here from Magrath to watch his daughter Shelby. Denise Heerink from Vauxhall thought the tournament was excellent and the hospitality in Rimbey evident. “Everybody is friendly and nice and they have been very good at the hotel as well.” And we had no trouble finding both facilities. They are not that far apart.” Phoenix Riggin, a player from Magrath, said the tournament was a great experience.

“It is a great way to make wonderful memories which highlight the fun of playing volleyball,” she said. Cindy Buist, whose daughters Leanne and Caitlin play for the Spartans, said the organizers and volunteers deserved credit for a job well done. “They did an awesome job. Everything is going really smoothly.” Buist said the competition was tough at the provincials, but the Spartans, who never made the playoffs, knew that when they went in. “They had been geared up for this for a long time. And it’s good for the girls to play up. It gets them geared up for next year.” “Having two different venues is really tremendous and adding the new floor allows us to host events such as this,” Principal Tim Lekas said. The teams all seemed to be having a good time, he added. “They are having a lot of fun and that’s what it’s all about.” Lekas gave credit to coach Lisa Shukan and athletic director Jarrod Robertson for the work they put into making the event a success. He also gave credit to the school staff and the volunteers for their commitment of time and effort. “It’s been good for the school and good for the community,” added high school teacher Gary Hiebert.

School board deficit covered by reserves By Amelia Naismith Wolf Creek Public School’s newly adjusted budget shows an approximate $2 million deficit. The school division’s revenue within the new budget has increased by more than $1 million and the expenditures increased by $2.5 million. The huge change in expenditures came with new hires, which came with increased enrollment levels, resulting in an additional $2,500,274 in costs. However, the projected deficit is fully covered by reserves. In the facilities department there was a decrease in its deficit and transportation is sitting at a $104,323 surplus, aided by fuel rebates. Without the rebate transportation would also be in a deficit. Almost $1 million more will be added to the early childhood services revenue due to increased enrolment, putting its total revenue at approximately $3 million. As of Sept. 30 there were an additional 28 full time equivalent students counted that will bring in $893, 921 on generated based instruction funding, which is approximately $5,000 per student that a school re-

ceives in funding. An additional 34 English as a second language students will generate $40, 052. Federally funded severe needs students increased by 10, resulting in an additional $180,000. Class size funding also increased by approximately $100,000. Within the division there was a 128-student increase, which is 49 more than in 2011. Rimbey Elementary School had an 11-student increase, however, Ponoka Composite High School decreased by approximately 18 students. “I would have to say funding is not adequate to the kinds of needs that we have said superintendent Larry Jacobs. He also believes this isn’t just true for Wolf Creek but for school divisions across the province. “”Even though we’ve managed to handle our budget we don’t have enough to provide everything we need to,” Jacobs added. In addition to enrolment there are other funding changes within the division. The Alberta Teacher Retirement Fund received a $620, 000 increase and there was a $162, 050 increase in provision for the unemployed funding.

Council decides on speed humps Continued from Page 1 Coun. Gayle Rondeel, who made a motion for council to consider speed humps, sees this as a good solution. “A speed hump is a gradual rise in the road as opposed to speed bumps that are a sharp rise. The design would determine how much you want to slow or curb traffic,” she said. Coun. Scott Ellis spoke to the residents from about 20 homes on Drader Crescent regarding the issue. He said residents in the seven homes closest to the alley were opposed to restricting access and of the dozen homes off the alley, half were indifferent or sympathetic and the other half were opposed. In a letter, Christine Ellis (Scott Ellis’s wife) stated

her opposition to closing the alley. “I live on Drader Crescent and work as a physician in town. I frequently use this access when I am called to the emergency department or going to deliver a baby. Often when I use this roadway, time is of the essence so it is not purely a matter of convenience.” Jim and Vera Wilson, who also live on Drader Crescent, said restricting access to the alley may solve one problem but it will create another problem on their street. “Agreed this may slow down some of the traffic there, but our concern is that it will increase traffic on our street which at times is bad enough,” the couple said in a letter. The speed humps will be installed in the spring.

creased by $550,125, resulting in a $7,390,182 total. This total is calculated before the reserve is used to cover the division’s deficit. “The government will accept that budget as long as we have the money to cover that,” said Jacobs. At the Nov. 22 school board meeting the trustees accepted this updated budget as information stemming from the preliminary budget, which was approved by the school board May 31.

There was also an increase of $2,699,399 in total expenditures. The largest expenditure increases came from board and system administration. Bellamy Payroll Maintenance fees are $153,504 and SRB training costs are $140,625. There is also a decrease in overall operating reserves and a decrease of $340,583 in capital reserves, after purchasing 14 buses. Wolf Creek‘s reserve balance in-

Council looks at relocating to Provincial building By Treena Mielke Town council and staff could pick up stakes and move to a new location and, in the process, Rimbey Municipal Library could find themselves with a new, expanded facility. At its regular meeting, Nov. 29, council discussed a report by CAO Tony Goode stating word has been received the town could lease the space at the Provincial Building for $2,917 per month including utilities on the condition they assume a 10-year lease. Goode said the town could move to the Provincial Building and sell the town office building to Rimbey Municipal Library Board for $1 and turn operational costs over to them. The final option Goode suggested was leaving the office where it is. The CAO said it makes sense to sell the pres-

ent building to the library board. “We can’t afford to operate two buildings,” he said. Goode noted the Provincial Building now houses FCSS on the main floor. “Moving there would accommodate town services, which is a plus. On the other hand, the disadvantage would be it would no longer be in the centre of town.” Mayor Sheldon Ibbotson said moving to the Provincial Building is worth seri-

ous consideration. “If we don’t move out the library would have to find another location. And the province would be responsible for the upkeep of the building. It might end up being cheaper in the long run.” Earlier this month council agreed to a request by librarian Jean Keetch to include a letter of support for the library to apply for a matching federal government grant of $189,750. The funding would go toward the expansion

and renovation of the library in anticipation of acquiring the town’s portion of the building. The town provides an $82,000 grant for the town. The issue is to be discussed at the library board meeting in December and will be taken under review during the town’s budget deliberations. “If everything came together we could be moved in the spring,” said Goode.

Kid’s ideas prove to be well worth listening to Luz Makes a Splash by Claudia Dávila c.2012, Kids Can Press $16.95 U.S. and Canada 96 pages You thought you might roast to death. Yep, it was hot last summer. The hottest you Terri could remember, and your Mom said the same Schlichenmeyer thing. All you wanted to The Bookworm do was spend the day inside or in the pool, except that it was dry outside, too, which might’ve changed your pool-going. You were sure you might roast. But did you know that there are actions you can take to help your neighborhood when it’s hot and dry? Luz discovered a few things, and in the new book Luz Makes a Splash by Claudia Dávila, you’ll see what she learned. Luz and her friend, Anika, were running out of options. It was hot outside, and they’d been going to the mall to cool off. But since it was bad for the environment to use air conditioning all the time, the mall started having brownouts and the girls didn’t know

what to do. Maybe a dip in Spring Pond would help. Luz, Anika, and their friend, Robert, headed to the pond but when they got there, they were saddened to see that it was almost dry! They were sadder when they learned that a local soda pop company was at fault. They actually liked Top Cola, but… With the neighborhood adults looking into the pond disappearance, Luz went to find somewhere cool to sit. It wouldn’t be in Friendship Park, though. Water restrictions meant that the park and its gardens were drying up. Then Luz saw Mr. DeSouza with a big pickle barrel. He was taking it to the park to catch rainwater but there hadn’t been rain for a long time. Luz asked Mr. DeSouza how wild plants withstood drought, and when he told her that they survived with groundwater, it made her think. She saw that Junebug Café was throwing out dishwater, which seemed wasteful. Hmmm. When Gordo, a man in the neighborhood, told Luz about graywater, she got a really great idea…

If Junebug Café could brings its dish- and laundry water to the park, and if Mr. DeSouza could collect any rainwater that might fall, and if Luz could somehow figure out how to filter all this water, it might mean that the Friendship Park gardens could be saved! So could everybody work together and save the pond, too? Sometimes, when you’re a kid, it’s easy to think that a tiny voice won’t make a difference in this big world. Luz Makes a Splash shows your child otherwise. Using a comic-book style that’s fun, author Claudia Dávila tells the further adventures of a girl who loves to make the environment better for the planet and for her neighborhood. I like this book and what it stands for, but I especially like Dávila’s Luz: she’s sharp and resourceful, which subtly encourages kids to find their own solutions to environmental issues they might find locally. Even though this book has a roasting in the summertime theme, I think kids ages six to 12 will learn a lot in any season. For them, Luz Makes a Splash might get a few ideas cooking.

Wooddale Ladies Club keeps on helping out By Treena Mielke Helping others, sharing laughter and tears, working hard and genuine caring has brought ladies together for generations. These old-fashioned values have not changed and in the Rimbey area, women’s groups continue to embody these characteristics, providing a strong social network of friendship, generosity and community spirit. The Wooddale Ladies Club is one of these organizations. This year the Wooddale ladies organized the Community Bazaar held at the Rimbey Drop In Centre Nov. 24. Twelve community groups took part in the bazaar, giving shoppers an opportunity to purchase Christmas gifts, enjoy a visit and lunch. Teri Ormberg, treasurer for the ladies’ group, said the bazaar is planned by community groups on a rotational basis. This year the lunch was provided by the Anglican Church Ladies. The Wooddale Ladies Club was formed in 1941 when a group of zealous woman got together during the Second World War to do their part to give back to the community. At that time Wooddale School was

still operational in the district located east of Highway 20. Activities in the group included quilting and handicrafts. Proceeds from the sale of these items went to help families who had suffered loss through a fire and to the hospital and library. Wooddale Ladies now donate to the Beatty House, library, hospital and Kids in Sports. They also contributed to the new Rimbey pool. The ladies take turns hosting monthly meetings. Activities continue to centre around quilting and handicrafts, although Ormberg said those skills are not a prerequisite to becoming a member. Members take part in a special outing in June. Last year they travelled to a nearby greenhouse. They have also visit the police dog training centre at Innisfail. New members are always welcome. “Our group has stayed fairly steady. We don’t try to solicit members, but new members are always welcome. It’s a good way to give back, do a bit of fundraising, and get to know our neighbors,” said Ormberg.

Teri Ormberg, Sadie Noble, Pauline Fisher, Georgina Treason and Lammie Kisjes from the Wooddale Ladies Club organized this year’s Rimbey Community Bazaar held Nov. 24. A good crowd attended the event and 12 groups participated. Treena Mielke Photo

Community chorus brings Christmas here with song The spirit of the holiday season will soon be brought to life at a special performance presented by the Rimbey Community Chorus. The chorus, which has been practicing every week since October, will perform Dec. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Rimbey Community Centre. Annette Boorman will lead the singers, who will be accompanied by pianists Kim Siebold and Grace Bennik. Boorman is looking forward to the evening, noting that 42 singers have joined the chorus this year. “Some of our music is new; some is the same. We have different styles including some African pieces and some traditional. It’s all Christmas music. During its performance the chorus will sing 12 selections. The audience is invited to join in during a

couple of the songs. Boorman said the chorus was open to anyone in the community who simply wanted to sing. “We have some people who read music and some who don’t even read a note. Boorman, who has led the group for several years, is pleased when the audience enjoys the music. She is especially happy to watch the singers come together and to help them blend their voices and combine their musical gifts to make beautiful music. “That’s very rewarding for me. A free will offering that will be donated to the Canadian Foodgrans Bank will be taken during the performance lasting about 90 minutes. The Rimbey branch of the ATB is picking up the cost of the hall rental.

Bridge club proposed for card enthusiasts By Treena Mielke Even with the upward surge in popularity of digitally generated computer games, the simple, old-fashioned pleasure of sitting down at a card table with a partner for a game of cards cannot be duplicated. For Rick Cookson Hills, bridge is the card game of choice and he enjoys nothing better than to face his opponent across a bridge table and challenge him or her to a competition. Cookson Hills wants others to experience the pleasure of playing the game and he would be delighted to see a bridge club formed in Rimbey. “To my knowledge it (bridge) is the largest competitive game in the world,” he said. “It’s absolutely international in scope.” Cookson Hills, a retired teacher from the Bentley area, has played the game since he was a teenager. He was first introduced to bridge when he was being treated for a serious head injury by Dr. Bill Parsons from Red Deer. “I had a fractured skull after being run over,” he said. “Dr. Parsons thought playing bridge would help me recover from my injuries faster as it was a new skill to be acquired. He also encouraged me to

write with my left hand.” The teenage boy found he enjoyed the game and it wasn’t long before he became proficient enough to pit his skills against other accomplished players. Now, many years later, Cookson Hills is happy to spend time playing and teaching bridge. “It is an intelligent use of leisure time and it’s a wonderfully ethical, moral game. When I’m playing bridge I can forget what time it is.” The long-time bridge player organized a club in Rimbey in the late ’70s. Players came from Edmonton and Calgary to take part in tournaments hosted by the club. Cookson Hills would like to see a similar club running again. Any proceeds the club generate would go toward Rimbey Municipal Library, he said. Anyone interested in taking part in a bridge club may contact Cookson Hills at 403-748-2407. Bridge is a trick-taking game using a standard 52-card deck. It is played by four players in two competing partnerships with partners sitting opposite each other around a table. Millions of people play bridge worldwide in clubs, tournaments, online and with friends at home making it one of the world’s most popular card games.
