Jenna’s gift Using sweet sales to spread cheer to kids who need it By Jennifer Lang At a time of year when plenty of other kids her age are concentrating on what they want for Christmas, Clayton’s Jenna Prem is baking up a storm. With the money she raises by selling trays of goodies, she’ll be able to buy Christmas presents for kids she’s never even met. For several years in a row she’s contacted local grocery stores for donations towards baking supplies, then headed into the family kitchen with her mom and turned it into an assembly line. They pump out trays of Nanaimo bars, chocolate haystacks, shortbread, tiger butter, jam tarts and more, then sell the trays to family, friends and supporters to raise hundreds of dollars to buy presents for children at Canuck Place, and their parents. The project’s grown to the point where she had 40 treat tray orders this year. The absolute limit, says her mom, Nicole. It all started when Jenna was eight, and her parents asked her to

find an organization she’d like to give to at Christmas time. When Jenna heard about Canuck Place, she was immediately drawn to it. “So we brainstormed ideas on how we could raise money,” recalls Nicole, “and we baked 20 trays of goodies and sold them for $20 each.” Armed with that year’s proceeds – $400 – and a wish list from Canuck Place, they went out shopping. When they dropped off the gifts, they also got a tour of the facility. Located in Vancouver, Canuck Place Children’s Hospice provides palliative and respite care for sick children from across B.C. “Canuck Place is like a mansion. It’s just like a normal house,” says Jenna, now 11, explaining there’s a front desk in the reception area, and a little waiting room for visitors. Jenna hasn’t gone upstairs – that’s where the bedrooms are. But she knows the hospice has a therapy room and a craft room. See PLAYDOUGH / Page 6

More recently, she became active with the Port Kells hospital auxiliary, and was instrumental in the construction of Port Kells community hall, complementing a lifetime of community service. “I am inspired by the dedication and pride each recipient exudes; they are all very deserving of this honour,” said Cadieux, MLA for Surrey-Panorama. Hayer, MLA for Surrey-Tynehead, added the recipients exemplify the best in all of us, and have put in a life of service for the greater good, “which has gone far beyond their own personal interests,” he said, improving the lives of many and serving as positive role models for us all.” The medal was created to mark the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne, providing a tangible way to honour Her Majesty for her service. Some 60,000 Canadians will be recognized this way, with 700 being presented by the provincial government. All B.C. MLAs have been involved in award-

ing medals to worthy recipients in their constituencies. Other Jubilee medalists recognized last week include Beryl Hamilton, co-founder of Surrey Hospice Society, Bill McNamara,

another founder of the Friends of the Surrey Museum and Archives Society and former firefighter, and 2012 B.C. Summer Games president, Rick Hansen Foundation ambassador to Surrey, Stan

Leyenhorst, and painter Robb Dunfield, who also works for the Rick Hansen Foundation, and has helped other ventillator-dependent quadriplegics move from hospital to the community.

Tune confessions of a Grinch I get a little cranky at this time of year. I blame big box stores and malls for ramping up the holiday hype Do You Hear What I Hear? How could you not? It’s everywhere. It’s inescapable. Christmas music, that is. Now, hold onto something, or sit down for this. Deep breath. I can’t stand Christmas music. Shocking, isn’t it? I hear Christmas carols, and I get all Grinchy. I didn’t use to be like this. I think as a kid I even used to sing the syrupy things. But then, along came mega shopping malls and big box stores which, after hyping Halloween in early September, put out the Christmas glitz in October. And along comes the Christmas music. Add the radio, and television specials, and the medical clinic, and the grocery store, and even, gawd forbid, the office environment, and it’s all carols, all the time. Whoever wrote Silent Night

clearly had no understanding of what one actually sounded like. I have made a rule in my house. No Christmas carols while I am within earshot, or the source will be shot – figuratively speaking, of course. That means no singing, no humming, strumming, or drumming. Especially by Little Drummer Boys. Rum pa pum thump! Decked in the Hall... No Rudolph, no Jingle Bells, and definitely no Twelve Days of Christmas. (Maids a-milking and ladies dancing may be of interest, however.) There shall be Peace on my Earth when there is no saccharine holiday season musical accompaniment. Joy will come To The World when carols pass out of fashion, like serving alcohol at staff Christmas parties. (Oooh, that was trouble a-brewing!)

TOT TOUR: JINGLE JOLLY SANTA Little ones explore Surrey’s many cultures, decorate a cookie then make their own decorations to take home. Friday, Dec. 14 from 11 a.m.-noon or 1-2 p.m. Must pre-register at 604-592-6956. Cost is $6.50, for ages 3-6 yrs. ANNOUNCEMENTS DOES YOUR CHILD NEED EXTRA SUPPORT? We can help. I wait for the day when it can be declared across all the land, Hark, the Herald Angels have put a sock in it! In Excelsis Gloria has finally recognized her excess. God Rest Ye Yaps, Merry Gentlemen. Go Tell It On the Mountain ... way, way up the mountain. On the other side of the mountain, in fact, and take Frosty the Snowman with you. I would rather jam flaming pine cones into my ears than hear another Christmas carol. You can imagine my distress as I researched the Internet for this column. How do you Google Christmas carols without the sappy little ditties seeping into your head? I had to go out in the parking lot and turn on my truck alarm, just to clear my brain. My aversion to ho-ho-ho mu-

sic is all quite disconcerting for my dear youngster, who is quite fond of the tinny tunes, and is inclined to follow the example of the shopping malls in terms of timing and endless repetition. But, blessed be the MP3 player, and ear buds. Whether its Ache-on, or Acorn, or whatever his name is, or Away in a Manger, I don’t have to listen to it. Now if only the big box stores could get with that program, and hand out headsets at the door. If it wasn’t for family, I would be so gone at Christmas time. I’d be lounging on the beach at some tropical tourist trap, where there is nothing to be heard but Bob Marley, and not a hint of O Tannenbaum ... just tanning bums.

By Jennifer Lang Dozens of people gathered at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Cloverdale campus last Thursday to remember the victims of the Montreal Massacre. Dec. 6 is a National Day of Mourning and Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. It coincides with the anniversary of the 1989 murder of 14 female students at the Ecole Polytechnic. In Cloverdale, the names of the victims

were read out as students came forward to light 14 candles in their memory – and one large candle to represent all women harmed in violence. They also left single stemmed red roses on the memorial, set up near the campus book store. A hush fell over the cafeteria and foyer as students and staff observed a minute’s silence near the end of the ceremony, one of several that took place at Kwantlen’s campuses.

“There’s a kitchen so families can come down and they have chefs make food for them.” When it comes to gift requests from Canuck Place, Playdough is big with younger kids while teens like movie tickets and gift cards, says Jenna, who also buys toys and supplies for the craft room. “It’s really fun to do,” she says. “I think about the kids a lot.” Last year when they dropped off the gifts, Kade, another student from her school, Hillcrest Elementary, was there. They got to spend some time with his family. He passed away earlier this year, but the memory has stuck with them. Jenna Prem “It reinforced how special it was to have things for the kids,” says Nicole, an educational assistant with School District 36. “I think about it and I’ll cry because I’m a parent. [Jenna] thinks about how the gifts will light up these kids’ faces.” Thinking of others who are less fortunate is something of a family tradition; Jenna’s younger sister Lauren collects bags of donations for Coats for Kids. “I’ve always made [our daughters] aware of how lucky and blessed they are,” Nicole says. “There are so many underprivileged kids in our own community.”

giant Santa Clauses. The light show features 20 different songs. Visit between 5 and 11 p.m. Monday to Thursday and on weekends from 5 p.m. to midnight on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and all night on New Year’s. City to nix smoking at hospitals The City of Surrey wants to ban smoking at Surrey Memorial Hospital and at the Jim Pattison Outpatient Surgery Centre. A proposed bylaw amendment approved at Monday’s council meeting would also ban smoking in open areas and parking lots that are more than 7.5 metres away from a building.

The city already prohibits smoking in buildings (subject to certain exemptions), taxis, public transit, bus shelters, restaurants and pubs, and within 7.5 metres of doorways of any building. The Fraser Health Authority supports the proposed smoking ban extension, but has indicated it may need to allow some patients to smoke and will create designated smoking areas at the facilities.

Hockey pals called to Calgary By Rick Kupchuck Playing together through minor hockey in Cloverdale, Tyler Wotherspoon and Laurent Brossoit might just be teammates again later this month in Ufa, Russia. The two 19-year-olds, currently with teams in the Western Hockey League, (WHL) are among the 31 players named to Hockey Canada’s Junior Team Selection Camp this week in Calgary, from which a team of 20 will be chosen to play at the Junior World Championships later this month in Russia. While Brossoit is tending goal for the Edmonton Oil Kings, and Wotherspoon is a defenceman with the Portland Winterhawks, the two have a history of playing together. They spent their years at the rep level with Cloverdale Minor Hockey on Pee Wee and Bantam AAA teams,

then were teammates on the 2008-09 Valley West Hawks Major Midget squad. Even while on separate teams in junior, their pro careers may see them together again, as both were selected by the Calgary Flames in the 2011 National Hockey League Entry Draft. “We’re good friends, and our families are real tight,” Wotherspoon said. “I’ve known him for a long time.” The friendship endured last year’s WHL championship series, in which the Oil Kings edged Portland in seven games. “It was great,” Wotherspoon said of playing against Brossoit in a seven-game series won by Edmonton. “He stepped up and made some big saves, I was very proud of him.” At this week’s camp, which winds up today (Thursday), Brossoit will be looking to avoid being one of the two goal-

tenders to be cut following the three-day camp. He’s in a group with a trio of netminders from Ontario, and only two of the four will make the active roster, while a third will be chosen as an alternate. Brossoit was part of a Hockey Canada junior team which played a four-game series with Russia’s national team last August, playing in a 6-5 loss in Halifax Aug. 13. He also was with the WHL select team, making 30 saves in a 1-0 shootout win over Russia in a Subway Series game Nov. 14 in Vancouver. “It’s not entirely unexpected, but it is a relief to get the call,” said Brossoit of the invitation to Calgary. Wotherspoon has a slightly larger challenge to be part of the Canadian team. A dozen blueliners will be in Calgary,

A friendly crossing Nation’s fave ‘brings a positive light’ By Jennifer Lang You may not know her name, but if you’ve travelled past the corner of 184 Street and 63 Avenue, she’s probably made you smile. Since 2010, Cathy Brady has been the crossing guard at Don Christian Elementary, where her friendly attitude and trademark wave has earned her a legion of fans. Her dedication won hearts and now it’s official – Brady is Canada’s Favourite Crossing Guard. The school’s Parent Advisory Committee spearheaded efforts to nominate her for a contest hosted by Parachute Canada, Safe

Kids Canada and Fed Ex Canada, by sending in photos and anecdotes. Brady is one of three winning crossing guards who will receive $500, a plaque, and another $500 for their schools. She was recognized Monday at a school assembly. “We are very excited,” school principal Martin Bobik said, describing Brady as “incredibly friendly and happy,” chatting to students and parents on her route and waving to all the drivers. “She brings a positive light to her job and we really appreciate her,” Bobik said.

B.C. patients on average wait 17 weeks after visiting a doctor before they are seen by a specialist and actually treated, according to a national survey conducted by the Fraser Instititute. That was the third lowest of provinces in Canada, after Ontario and Quebec. Just over seven weeks of the delay to treatment in B.C. was the initial wait between the GP and the specialist, an improvement from 9.7 weeks in the Fraser Institute’s 2011 survey. B.C. patients waited an average four weeks for CT scans and ultrasounds – slightly longer than the national average. And the wait of 12 weeks for an MRI scan was much longer than the national average of 8.4 weeks, although it’s an improvement from 16 weeks in the previous two years.

“I’ll just do what I always do, and work hard and play as well as I can,” Wotherspoon said. “I just have to do my best and leave the hard decisions up to them.” While both players have experienced international hockey, a three-day camp that presents an opportunity

of a lifetime will be difficult mentally. “There’s always pressure, but I’m a goalie and I feel it all the time,” said Brossoit. “I feel the pressure, but I’m also confident. It’s just a ‘go and do your thing’ situation, I just have to show my stuff.”

earned the house the tagline, “Hardwick Hall, more was glass than wall”. The famous Hardwick Hall textiles – an intriguing 400-year-old collection including tapestry, embroidery, and canvas work – is the world’s largest single private family collection of such crafts. Bess herself worked on many, including the famous Oxburgh Hangings, with Mary Queen of Scots, whom she “hosted” at Chatsworth at different times before Mary’s execution. Despite all the windows, some of the massive rooms are dark, a blessing for preserving textiles and art works. The grounds of the house are lush, rolling, nicely treed, and home to assorted farm animals. Young families enjoy picnicking in the grounds, and the steady stream of visitors inevitably wend their way to the tearoom. We opted for the Hardwick Inn in Chesterfield, a pretty spot with a reasonably priced pub menu and good service. Looking back, as we drive away, Bess’s presence is still felt with her initials EH clearly carved into the Hall towers. We decide our tour would not be complete without a visit to Derby Cathedral where Bess, also known as Bess the Builder, is interred. Surrounded by alabaster, she designed her own final resting place – which included space for 47 of her relatives. Her one unfulfilled ambition was to see her granddaughter, Arbella, become Queen. The blood-

line, does, however, extend to the current royal family, which makes one wonder how much next year’s royal baby will inherit of her ancestor’s entrepreneurial gumption. In a different way, I’m guessing “she”, if my bet delivers, will need every ounce of it. As, Will and Kate know, the court of 21st century public opinion is tougher in many ways than the 12th century one Bess navigated. This royal child will need all the good genes it can muster, even with wealth.

Keep Christmas hazards at bay

Lorie Chortyk

The holidays are a time for festive decorations and special treats, but some of these seasonal items can be hazardous for your pets. Just ask Agnes. Last year, the six-year-old Old English sheepdog underwent emergency surgery to recover approximately 20 feet of sharp wire tinsel from her stomach! To help ensure your pet has a safe and happy holiday, the BC SPCA offers the following reminders:

No Bones Please:

Avoid giving bones to your dogs or cats, particularly turkey bones. Poultry bones easily splinter and can cause serious injury, while bone fragments can cause intestinal blockages or lacerations.

Healthy Treats: Chocolate and other sweets

should not be given to animals. Chocolate contains theobromine, a chemical that can be deadly to cats and dogs, though not harmful to humans. The best thing you can do for your pets over the holidays is to keep them on their regular diet. Look for special animal treats instead of giving your animals cookies or sweets meant for people.

Poisonous Plants: Many popular holiday

plants are poisonous to animals including mistletoe, holly, ornamental pepper and Christmas rose. Remember to keep these plants out of reach of pets - especially birds. Poinsettias are not poisonous to pets or people. This has been a long-standing rumour

perpetuated for decades. Having said this, some pets who have a sensitivity to the latex contained in the plant may get diarrhea or even vomit if they consume parts of a poinsettia.

Come check us out online!!

Avoid Tinsel:

If you have a Christmas tree and pets, you have a recipe for trouble. First, make sure the tree is well secured. Try to place decorations above paw height and use string to hang the bulbs instead of hooks, which are easily dislodged. If possible, use nonbreakable ornaments. Avoid using tinsel or angel hair. Cats and dogs will ingest both, which can cause intestinal problems. Cords for lights should be made inaccessible to pets - especially from chewing puppies and exploring kittens. Keep in mind that the chemicals added to the water reservoir of your Christmas tree to keep your tree living longer won’t do the same for your pet. The chemicals are toxic to animals, so keep the reservoir covered.

Natural Pharmacy for your 4-Legged Friends

Pets have emotions too.

Choking Hazards in Toys

: Avoid purchasing pet toys with small or soft pieces that can be chewed and swallowed. Nylon bones tend to splinter less than plastic ones. Be sure to inspect pet toys regularly and discard deteriorating ones.
