Contrary to concerns expressed in recent letters to the editor (including one in this issue), the STARS (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society) air ambulances do indeed provide service to the Creston Valley. “Although STARS is not based in British Columbia, the proximity of our Grande Prairie and Calgary bases puts our crews in a position to respond to many communities in eastern British Columbia,” said Cameron Heke, manager of media and public relations/communications. “In 2011 STARS responded to Creston twice, and have flown there another six times over the years. … “It is certainly correct that the BK117 cannot fly unrefueled to Creston; however, STARS can respond to Cranbrook and back to Calgary without refueling. Often, patients from surrounding communities are taken to Cranbrook and then

airlifted to a hospital with a higher level of care.” When STARS is asked to fly outside the unrefueled range, it will refuel at the local airport or any location with a fuel cache, and works closely with a number of operators in the area to ensure that fuel is available for the helicopter 24/7. A new AW139 helicopter planned for in Calgary in 2013 will be able to better respond to southeastern B.C. “It flies further and faster than our current fleet of BK117 helicopters and will be an even more viable option for your area,” said Heke. He added that STARS also provides emergency physician referral for critical patients in southeastern B.C. Last year, members of the STARS outreach team met with staff at the Creston Valley Hospital in Creston to discuss this process. STARS is just one part in the region’s overall chain of survival, Heke said, and works closely with other emergency services. “When the need is there and we are in a position to assist, our team is happy to get involved in any way we can,” he said. “Ultimately, whether or not STARS is asked to become involved in a mission is a medical decision made between the doctors at the hospital and our on-call referral emergency physicians.”

Greg Nesteroff
AWARD EARNED — FortisBC has named the Creston and District Community Complex a recipient of its 2012 Kootenay Conservation Excellence
Award. Energy upgrades over the last few years have resulted in savings of nearly $30,000 in electricity costs. New mechanical systems incorporate variable speed drive, energy-efficient motors and a system for better managing consumption. (From left) Creston Mayor Ron Toyota, Regional District of Central Kootenay community services manager Joe Chirico and RDCK chair and Area B director John Kettle, who recently received the award at the RDCK’s Nelson office.
From page 1 “The estimated benefit of the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market to the local economy is approximately $1.72 million annually,” Parkin said. The value of the Harvest Share program is harder to assess, but the demand has grown since its inception. “Our Harvest Share program harvested approximately 30,000 pounds of produce locally this year, which otherwise would have gone to waste,” he said. “About a third of that amount is distributed to 14 local charities.” Harvest Share volunteers and the property owners each receive a third of the picked produce. “These figures clearly indicate that our farmers’ market manager and Harvest Share co-ordinator are doing a fabulous job for all of us in our community,” he said. Parkin acknowledged the commitment of the local business community to the programs’ success. The Creston Valley Advance sponsors advertising, Kokanee Ford supplied a truck for the Harvest Share program’s pickups and deliveries and Pro-to-Call donated a computer. The Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce, he said, provides office space that allows the organization to function more professionally and effectively, the College of the Rockies provides monthly meeting space, the Columbia Brewery donates boxes for the fruit and vegetables and the Town of Creston allows use of the farmers’ market space adjacent to Millennium Park. “And, of course, Lloyd Morris has provided rental space in the Morris Flowers greenhouse for the past three years, giving us one of the longest running farmers’ markets in the B.C. Interior,” Parkin said.

If you haven’t heard about the End of the World Masquerade Party that runs next week, you can be forgiven — posters for the event have been disappearing all over town. Vern Gorham, the producer behind the Kootenays’ Best Singer contest series, is hosting the Dec. 21 party, which coincides with the supposed end of the Mayan calendar. But he’s been kept on his toes by replacing posters, some from inside stores, and put up over a dozen on Wednesday last week. “Most of those were places they were taken from,” he said. The plan of whoever took down the posters backfired, however — word reached the ears of the CBC Radio morning show producer, who slated Gorham for an appearance yesterday morning. The subject of the end of the world is touchy for some, but for
Gorham — not to mention the dozens who have already purchased tickets —it was just an excuse to have a blast. “I thought it would be fun to throw a really crazy party,” he said. “I respect other people’s beliefs. But I don’t believe the world is going to end that night. And if it does end, we’ll all be together.” The 19-plus event runs from 8 p.m.-2 a.m. starting Dec. 21, and will have a cash bar, snacks and appetizers, as well as prizes for the best male and female costume. And of course, great entertainment will be a highlight. In addition to dance music DJed by Gorham, Trena Speers, who won Kootenays’ Best Singer in June, will perform two sets of country music, and Creston’s Best Singer winner Matt Hansen and his band, Bred for Noise, will take to the
stage at midnight — provided the world hasn’t ended, of course. “I love to showcase the talent I’ve found in the Kootenays,” Gorham said. “It’s a great opportunity to hear people who, in my mind, are as good as professionals, and celebrate them.” Tickets for the party at the Creston and District Community Complex are $25 ($40 per couple), available at Black Bear Books and Kingfisher Used Books.

Here we are, nearly Christmas time, not an NHL game has been played and yet somehow the world, or at least our part of it, has managed to trudge on. If you are honest with yourself, chances are that you have found the peaks and valleys of the collective bargaining talks a lot more entertaining than a Nashville versus Columbus tilt. When I want to see just how whacky the world of hockey fans without NHL games to follow has become, I just scroll through the reader comments on sites like Sportsnet.ca. The angst is astonishing, the opinions endless and the number of commenters who seem convinced they have inside information or a completely unique solution to the squabble is, if not enlightening, certainly amusing. Most peculiar is the prevailing thought that the dispute between owners and players should be easily resolved because it is a “fight between millionaires and billionaires.” For players’ supporters, this means that the billionaires should just cough up — they are wealthy hobbyists who dabble in the hockey business because they have too much money and should continue in what for many, perhaps most, of them is a losing proposition. Those who take the owners’ side — and there are many — argue that players already make lots of money and they should be ready and willing to have their existing contracts rolled back to accommodate these poor rich guys. Personally, I align myself more closely with the players, but not because I’m sympathetic to the amount they earn. The truth is that there isn’t likely a player in the

Lojon slogan 55: Liberate yourself
This slogan focuses on two major obstacles to realization: ego-clinging and disturbing emotions. If we are to live a life based in spiritual values, it is important to take a close look into these two patterns. In fact, it is so important that you may need to actually bring them to the surface so that you can examine them in detail. The usual idea of meditation and Zen practice is to calm down, relax and have a little break from self-obsession and disturbing emotions. But according to slogan 55, unless we are willing to scrutinize our deep-rooted emotional undercurrents and long-standing fixation on ourselves, our so-called calmness and relaxation will be superficial and can be turned into chaos and tension with changes in external conditions that come about through loss: loss of health, loss of a loved one, loss of material security. The tendency to pretend everything is okay, while avoiding unpleasant realities, shows itself both in conflicts that arise in external social relationships and in inner conflict. In order to feel good, we often tell ourselves that everything is OK when it isn’t. But to train our heart/mind we need to stop pretending completely. We need to
drop the solace we find in religious beliefs and material comfort. Zen training is not about putting on a show or keeping up appearances. It’s about bringing all aspects of the

human experience to the surface, even those that provoke us the most. In working with this slogan, we deliberately and systematically bring to mind the kinds of situations that make us crazy and that trigger a defensive reaction. We drop denial. In other words, through the power of our minds, we push our own buttons, and then see what happens. Often, just thinking about such things is enough to create a whoosh of simultaneous emotional upheaval and a re-solidified focus on the self. But only when harmful tendencies have entered conscious awareness can we take the necessary steps to take responsibility for them and eliminate them completely.
Deception of others is always rooted in deception of self. Destructive patterns thrive on being hidden, not only from others, but from ourselves. That is what allows them to maintain their power over our thoughts, our speech and our actions. But if we are brave enough to arouse the powerful forces that are deeply ingrained in our brain we can confront and examine them, we can begin to free ourselves from their control. Ironically, in order to develop true peace, we need to be willing to rile things up. Suggested practice: Bring to mind something that gets a rise out of you. Notice the heightening of emotionality and the strengthening of a frozen and solid self-regard. Try to stay with that experience and examine it in depth, as a mental, bodily and emotional sensation. In doing so, remember that Zen practice is gentle, so don’t begin with your most challenging and deep-rooted habit patterns, but with something more ordinary. This column is a long series of short essays exploring the meaning of the Lojong Slogans. It is inspired by the work of Judy Lief. BCAS serves Creston more than Stars To the Editor: (Re: “Stars saved Creston woman’s life”, Nov. 29 Advance, page 7) I do believe that STARS (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society) is a very good air ambulance service, and they are now supplying services into Saskatchewan and Manitoba. I have contacted STARS in regard to the calendar donations; this was in regard to the person who was representing them telling people that Stars was coming to Creston. I was advised by STARS that they are not coming to Creston, they do not have a contract with the province of B.C. and, also, Creston would be at the very end of their flying ability with the aircraft they have. You can go to the STARS website and see that they have not provided any recent medevac flight out of Creston. Creston is serviced by BC Ambulance Service air ambulances, which provide fixed wing and rotary wing service here, about 100 flights a year. If someone wants to give a donation to STARS, I do believe it is going to a organization that does provide a excellent service. The concern I have, as well as others I have spoken with, is that the person selling the STARS calendars was doing so by telling people that STARS was going to be providing that service to Creston, which is not true. BC Ambulance Service are the people that look after us here, so maybe your dollars should go to them if you want to keep up the excellent service. George Green Lister

catchment areas for Wynndel Elementary School, which has been closed since 2008. When South Creston closed, the lines for Erickson elementary were never enlarged. Children that went to South Creston were given a choice to go wherever. Even as recently as last school year, people in that area were given a choice. If families move now into the ARES area, and they have children kindergarten through to Grade 4, they have to go elsewhere, making it not attractive for families wanting to move into the Town of Creston. I brought up to the board that the idea for what the board termed “revenue generation” for catchment fees was implemented without due process. These catchment-fee letters were sent out without redrawing the lines and basically thinking it through thoroughly. It makes it even more difficult for one of the lowest income areas (if not the lowest) in the Kootenays. To the credit of the board, they will waive the fees if the family goes through a process of declaring hardship (not that that is an easy process for someone dealing with hardships), but then again, the board also said they “might” make the individual schools cover those that are in hardship. The board members also said they are reviewing this whole process, but I suggested that these reviews should have been in place before they sent out these bills to parents throughout the district. Public education is supposed to be free, but you have got to be able to get to the education source. It was suggested that maybe everyone could be charged a small fee, perhaps $50 a child, for more revenue generation, but to me that’s a slippery slope towards not-free education. Schools often have free food for children that are not adequately provided with nourishment, but free transportation to school should also be there. Rhonda Barter Creston

tion regarding the plants around your home or office. A recent article in Nursery Management (November 2012) by Charlie Hall, entitled “Shout It Loud”, states plants enhance people’s social, physical, psychological, cognitive, spiritual and environmental well-being. Aside from the fact that houseplants, flowers, flowering shrubs and ornamental trees help beautify in and around your home and workplace, they also help draw people into shopping districts, reduce shoppers’ stress while they are there, enhance overall curb appeal, boost apartment and commercial building occupancy rates, increase tourism revenue, create local jobs and
increase property values. Plant life also helps clean and purify the air, attracts wildlife, reduces noise pollution, mitigates soil erosion and storm water runoff, minimizes wind damage and reduces overall energy usage. Quite the list! While all these economic and environmental benefits may not come as a surprise to you, there is a whole plethora of health and well-being benefits that might. Interestingly enough, peer reviewed research has documented a person’s ability to concentrate in their work environment is enhanced by the presence of plants and flowers. Children learn faster and are less distracted in flower and plant filled environs. Flowers

“Hank”
Hank is a lovely friendly, gentle Newfoundland-Lab cross that is good with older children and adults, especially men! He walks well on leash and loves to play fetch and go for car rides. He knows his basic commands and listens quite well. His puppy exuberance is waning and he is becoming a very nice adult dog that really likes affection.

What some birds do the night before the Christmas Bird Count
A number of times I have made very short outings in the forest around the cabin or a campsite in late evening or in total darkness. As I move over the soft ground under the trees everything is quiet till I hear a sharp chirp, or a flutter of wings and light cracking sounds as beating wings hit twigs in nearby trees. Quite obviously, a bird was hustled from its nighttime perch by my unexpected nocturnal visit. In many cases, by the sound of the initial chirp, I assume, even though I don’t see the bird, that it is a robin. Had it been an owl, with special nocturnal seeing capabilities, it may
Out There
Ed McMackin have been able to find and quietly navigate a safer route of escape from my presence. Judging by the circumstances, the robin, like many other types of birds I
have flushed at night, was set up to spend the night perched on a protected branch in a thick part of the tree. Many birds that perch in tree branches for the night have a built in safety feature that keeps them from falling off the branch while they sleep. Unfortunately, or fortunately, I don’t have that special feature and like Eutychus, and most other people, if I fell asleep in a window opening the results could be disastrous. The special feature that birds have for staying on a perch while they sleep are “locking” joints in the toes and feet

that help keep a firm hold on the branch, preventing them from falling off or swinging beneath. So, they can huddle down on the branch, fluff up their feathers to keep out the cold, stuff their beak and head into that warm coat, and pass the night in total comfort — that is, total comfort for a bird, looking like a small burl on the branch. I can understand that perched on a branch a bird could maintain pretty good balance but for a bird to hang upside-down all night would be something a bit more amazing. Toby, my cat, was staring intently late one evening into the space under the gable overhang of the cabin. Equipping myself with a headlamp, I went back to investigate. As I began to check out the overhang, a flicker flew out from under the overhang and away into the gathering darkness. Further checking revealed a second flicker snuggled, upsidedown, into the corner formed by the underside of the gable roof and a beam. As far as I could see, the only toehold was a single crack where the beam joined the overhang. Amazing! Its head was tucked away somewhere in its plumage. We don’t know how birds are spending the night as we humans, for the most part, are comfortably situated in our dwellings, our thoughts far away from the night world out there! Another common practice of many birds is to take advantage of the protective shelter of a vacant bird nest for their nighttime sleep. The nest of choice would be one that was built in a thick conifer, away from the trunk but in enough to be away from snow and all but heavy rain that would be shed down the tips of the branches to the ground, keeping the inner part of the tree reasonably dry. Birds perching on a branch for the night would also pick a similar location. Birds also take to natural cavities in tree trunks and old woodpecker excavations for nighttime shelter. They will even take shelter there in the daytime during severe storms. Once, 30 bluebirds were found in a bird nest box during a late spring snowstorm. It’s a good idea to leave your bird boxes up for winter nighttime bird shelters, but clean them out first. Barns, hay-sheds, carports and many more structures have made a haven for birds seeking nighttime shelter. Of course birds do all this not just on the night before the Christmas Bird Count, but every night of the year and we seldom think about it or check it out! By the way, if you wish to check in for the Christmas Bird Count, give Sharon a call at 250-428-7289 or Irene at 250-428-7500. The count is planned for Dec. 27. Go out and see if the birds have had a good night! Now, one more thing. Watch out for the little sugar molecules that clump the blood cells. Hoping you have a safe, healthy and happy holiday season, from all out there! Ed McMackin is a biologist by profession but a naturalist and hiker by nature. He can be reached at 250-866-5747.

Credit Union donates to field project
The Creston Valley Youth Soccer Association’s U12 team is one of many that will benefit from upgrades to Kinsmen Park.
CRESTON VALLEY YOUTH SOCCER ASSOCIATION
The Creston Valley Youth Soccer Association (CVYSA) is pleased to announce receipt of a $2,500 grant from the Creston and District Credit Union. This generous grant will allow for the next phase of work to be completed on the field at Kinsmen Park. The spring and summer of 2012 have seen significant improvements made to the quality of
the playing surface at the park. Old tarmac has been removed and much of the field has been levelled. Dedicated volunteers Todd Hawton, Bill Ferguson, Jim Jacobsen and Pam Huber have co-ordinated the effort. The next phase will include final levelling and prepping of the field, adding topsoil and reseeding areas in need. User groups to benefit from the upgrade include the CVYSA and the Creston Valley Slo-pitch Association.
Though not part of the current project, the possible future enhancement of the walking trail that surrounds the park is being considered by a separate volunteer group. The parkland is owned by School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) and is currently leased to the CVYSA. As work progresses, the CVYSA extends its appreciation to all involved for making this positive enhancement to Creston a reality.

Tangerine Swing offering swing jazz concert SUBMITTED
The Nelson-based Tangerine Swing will entertain a Creston audience when it plays at the Snoring Sasquatch on Dec. 16. Tangerine Swing was formed in Nelson late in 2007 when Diane Ermacora asked David Mitchell to accompany her piano and vocals with his acoustic upright bass. Ermacora played and sang a broad spectrum of music, from Broadway to folk to country to jazz to ’70s singer-songwriter music. She loves swing jazz, a love that came from listening to the radio as a child and was later developed by attending
seven summer swing music camps in Sorrento held by the BC Swing Association. “It’s such a fun and lively style of music,” she said. “Even though a lot of people say they don’t listen to jazz, pretty soon you’ll see them tapping their feet when they hear that swing.” Ermacora started playing piano and singing when she was five years old; she started with classical lessons, then played by ear throughout her life. She loves to sing and has performed not only as a solo act and with Tangerine Swing, but also in theatre productions. Ermacora attended the music program at

Selkirk College in 2000, which she says connected the dots and gave her the confidence to sing and play publicly. The bottom half of Tangerine Swing is Mitchell on acoustic stand-up bass. Mitchell started by playing (sideways) electric bass in a loud blues-rock band as a young man to pay for his university science studies. His preference is for upright bass, which he played in an amateur symphony in Burlington Ontario 30 years ago. After a 20-year hiatus from bass playing, he is at it again, this time playing an entirely different style of music. Mitchell plays a beautiful and unusual black larger-than-standard-size bass that was hand made in New York and took three months to build. Both Ermacora and Mitchell were part of the late Paul Gergely’s String of Pearls swing band, and more recently were in the rhythm section for the Nelson Opera Society’s production of the rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar.
The music of Tangerine Swing lends itself to play venues that are not part of the regular club scene. They have played outdoor fairs, street festivals, wine festivals, weddings and conferences. The Snoring Sasquatch is one of those special performance venues that Tangerine Swing are looking forward to playing. For this performance Tangerine Swing will be playing some of their regular swing numbers that were popular 50 to 80 years ago, alongside a few blues tunes. The second set will be non-secular Christmas songs that everyone knows, but probably have not heard played in this variety of styles. Tangerine Swing often plays with special guests. For this performance the band, features Eric Johnson on drums and Michael Meyrhofer on saxophones. Johnson is a venerable member of the music scene in Creston, Nelson and beyond. He is a multi-instrumentalist,
Christmas Eve Worship
performing on guitar, vocals, drums and other instruments. He plays in a multitude of bands and is a mentor to many musicians, always patient and encouraging and extremely generous with his time. Johnson drums with a supple touch, steady rhythm and is adept at playing almost any genre from swing to Latin, rock, folk, country or concert band. Meyrhofer has played music since he was a child, studying piano and then taking up saxophone and clarinet in high school. He played for 18 years in the Playmore Junction Big Band and has performed at festivals such as the Kaslo Jazz Fest and Starbelly Jam. Meyrhofer will be playing his alto saxophone and his postSecond World War-era tenor saxophone, which has a very rich distinct sound. Tickets for Tangerine Swing are $10 in advance at Kingfisher Used Books and Black Bear Books, and $13 at the door, which opens at 6 p.m.; the show starts at 7.

Hazel Roberta Smith (nee Oakes) June 30, 1926 ~ December 2, 2012
Born in Blairmore, Alberta, Hazel grew up in the heart of her little town. Her father, Robert Oakes, was a Fire Boss at the coal mine. Hazel’s mother, Sarah Jane, was a dedicated homemaker and mother. Hazel grew up with her sister Ruth and also had three half-siblings, Jack, Olive and Edna. Hazel spoke often of her happy childhood and she remembered her school years with fondness. After graduating from Grade 13 in 1945, she worked at Thompson’s Dry Goods and then on March 5, 1946, she married her sweetheart, Joseph Smith from two towns over, Bellevue, Alberta. They headed for greener pastures - the BC Kootenays, settling in Creston. Joe and Hazel set up house temporarily in the Bide-a-Wee cabins, as they built their home on the Erickson property they called “The Farm”. They quickly began their family, creating a haven brimming with life. Their six children were born over a span of three decades, ensuring a lively and busy household. Hazel and Joe dedicated their lives to serve Jehovah in 1955. They Àrmly believed in a resurrection to a restored paradise earth, which scriptural hope they shared for over 50 years with their neighbours in Creston. Hazel was an organized housekeeper and was very industrious. She loved to work in her vegetable and Áower gardens, taking pride in the things she grew. She spent many hours in her kitchen, cooking delicious meals and baking her favourite goodies. She was famous for her large “family” dinners.
For 44 years of her married life, she was employed for a portion of each year at the fruit-packing shed where she worked efÀciently as a packer. Since her husband Joe also worked there, supper table conversations were often Àlled with packing shed stories. She loved the “Girls” she worked with and spent the last several years of her life visiting many of them at their homes. Hazel was a loving wife and mother and always had time to listen in spite of how busy she was. She was eager to have fun, whether it was playing a game, going out for a meal or enjoying an outing. She loved to be around people and was sincerely interested in the welfare of others. Joe and Hazel spent sixty-two years from, 1946 to 2008, in the home they built and the orchard they loved. Due to health concerns, they had to leave their home in March of 2008. They lived brieÁy in Crest View Village before moving to the Swan Valley Lodge in Creston where Joe passed away in November of 2008. Hazel remained in the tender care of the kind Harris Unit staff until her death. She will be deeply missed by children David (Cheryl), Robert (Diane), Judy (Robin), Roger (Shelley), Kathy (Greg) and Douglas (Chelsey); grandchildren Andrew, Cadence, Susan, Jason, Joseph (Michelle), Deborah (Devon), Erin (Vance), Willow (Jon), Chelsea (Micah), Logan, Forrest, Austin, Brooke, and Tia; great-grandchildren Spencer, Capri, Sawyer, Hayden, Cole, Lindyn, Rhys, Seth, Shae, Parker and two more on their way. A ripping good yarn is spun in Canyon
R
iverstone Yarns has been in business for just over six months, and already the products from Canyon are gaining an excellent reputation — even as far away as New York state. With Story and online orderphoto by ing possible, Brian yarn Lawrence the dyed in the Creston Valley can be purchased with ease, but it’s also popular among Kootenay stores, including Creston’s Stitchin’ Time. “It’s a big thing to local retailers,” said Riverstone owner Susan Chamberlain. “They’ve been very supportive when approached. It’s going to be from Invermere to Castlegar and Rossland.” Chamberlain offers three lines of yarn: medium worsted weight wool (suitable for hats, scarves and sweaters), worsted weight mohair (sweaters, shawls and combinations) and sock wool (a durable blend of wool and nylon). They’re available in 30 colours — with more colours and lines to come. She and her husband have been in the Creston Valley for nearly three years, having lived most recently in Portland, Ore. Through Community Futures, the Canyon resident purchased her equipment in January, starting up Riverstone Yarns in May. Dying yarn isn’t exactly what she’s done in the
past, but it follows in a similar vein, which grew out of acting in high school. “As you get older, you realize that’s not your particular talent,” she said with a laugh. Chamberlain, who was raised in Dawson Creek, got into the costuming aspect of theatre, and ended up in Toronto for seven years, where she dyed fabric for TV and stage productions. The work was stressful, she said, “especially TV, which is very different than theatre.” But it offered a welcome challenge — she took part in the creation of “really campy, outrageous stuff” for a production of Cinderella, as well as making costumes without fabric. “We actually didn’t sew things,” she said. “We dyed fabric-covered foam and glued it together. … “I love having somebody ask me to do something different. That pushes me to find new ways to do it.” An avid knitter, Chamberlain never stopped being creative, and found hand dying to be a perfect fit. She now creates new colour combinations, which vary slightly from one batch to the next. “That’s the beauty of hand-dying — you never get two the same,” she said. She makes it sound simple — take six to eight
skeins, soak them for 10 minutes in hot water, squeeze them out, and then put in a pot with dye and let them simmer. To create each specific colour, a second dye can be added at the appropriate point in the process. Once the skeins are dyed, she rinses them well. “One of my pet peeves is when you buy something and the dye comes off on your hands or needles,” she said. Once they’re dry, the skeins are spun into loops, which are twisted and put on the shelf, ready for sale. The majority of Chamberlain’s yarn is bought wholesale by retailers, but it has been a particular hit at the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market, one of the few places she directly sells. “Of course, nobody goes to a farmers’ market to buy yarn,” she said. “But people from out of town buy it as a souvenir of the market. Men will buy it for girlfriends, mothers or wives.” And as much as she loves making it, one of her favourite parts of the job is seeing what the yarn is turned into later. “I love to get photographs,” she said. “When somebody on Facebook writes to me and says, ‘I made this,’ I love that. I love to see people’s creativity.” For more information, visit www.riverstoneyarns. com or find Riverstone Yarns on Facebook.

Thunder Cats end seven-game losing streak BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
For the Creston Valley Thunder Cats, a 3-1 win on Saturday was more than just a victory over the Columbia Valley Rockies — it also marked the end of a seven-game losing streak. “It was a good game,” said head coach Josh Hepditch. “We played a full 60 minutes.” The Thunder Cats started the scoring with two goals in the first period, one by Joey Berget at 17:42 and a power-play goal by Trevor Hanna at 12:50. Jaiden Ward followed with a shorthanded goal in the middle of the second period. Although the period saw some action — with Andrew Hodder earning a 10-minute misconduct penalty and Angus Johnston ejected from the game — “the kids stuck with it found a way to get it

done,” said Hepditch. Their goals went unanswered by the Rockies until mid-third period, when Byron Sam scored that team’s only goal. “I think the guys took the right mindset into the game and really pulled through with this one,” Hepditch said. It was a better effort than the pervious night, when the Thunder Cats started out dominating the scoring, but ended up losing 6-4 to the Golden Rockets. “We started off really good in the first period like we wanted to, then slowly let them get going.” The Rockets scored first at 19:02 in the first period, followed by goals by Jesse Collins, Ty Kronewitt (unassisted) and Brady Ward. After a shorthanded Rockets goal, Ethan Rusnack scored the Thunder Cats’ fourth and final goal of the game.

Although the Rockets scored once in the second period and three times in the third, the Thunder Cats gave it their best effort. “They really stuck to the game plan and did what we wanted them to do,” he said. “It’s bittersweet when you can see the potential the team has.” Hepditch was also pleased with Ward’s performance. “He’s been one of our most consistent players all year,” he said. “He had a goal, but had a great game for us.”
Saturday’s win over the Rockies couldn’t have come at a better time, with the Rockies now just two points behind the Thunder Cats, who have 24, in the Eddie Mountain Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. Ahead of the Thunder Cats are the Rockets with 34, the Kimberley Dynamiters with 36 and the Fernie Ghostriders with 37. This weekend, the Thunder Cats will be away on Friday, taking on the Nelson Leafs, who lead the Neil Murdoch

Division with 46 points. “They've got an extremely good team,” said Hepditch. “We’ve played them once before, and it was a good game. It will be a good measuring stick.” In their only divisional game of the weekend, the Thunder Cats will host the Rockies on Saturday, and then be visited by the Summerland Steam on Sunday. “That was where our streak got started,” said Hepditch. “We’re looking forward to bouncing back with them.”
