Celebrating 100 Years in the Community It is no small feat to reach a 100-year anniversary. The Nicola Valley Health Care Auxiliary is among the elite few that can celebrate in such an accomplishment. The Auxiliary volunteers fundraise for Merritt healthcare facilities, including the Nicola Valley Health Centre and Gillis House, through its thrift shop and community fundraisers. The entirely volunteer-run organization makes monetary and equipment donations that add up to as much as $50,000 a year, according to Nicola Valley Health Centre Administrative Assistant Michelle Stuttard. Donations have ranged from mattresses to stretchers, to a blood bank freezer and a van for Gillis House residents to take day trips. “The Auxiliary’s donations allow us to
provide better patient care,” Stuttard said. “The donations are on a priority basis to improve the level of comfort and care that patients/residents receive at the Nicola Valley Health Centre and at Gillis House. Through their tireless work to fundraise we can have the latest equipment, that not only assists in patient care and comfort, it also provides a better (quicker and safer) work environment for staff. The equipment often allows for shorter wait times for patients and the benefit of the equipment can be felt throughout the facilities and the community.” Jacquie Hall, the Auxiliary’s secretary joined the Auxiliary shortly after moving to Merritt from Surrey in 1981 and since then has served as its president, vice-president, and direc-
tor, among other roles. “It’s just wonderful that we have an organization that’s a hundred years old in a small town like this,” Hall said. She said one of the Auxiliary’s strengths has been its adaptability to the times since its formation. “In 1912, women either volunteered at their church or helped out at the local hospital,” Hall said. “They did things like sew linens, change bandages, serve tea and coffee and goodies, and read to the patients. Then in the 60s and 70s, it seemed like volunteers were more affluent, and their focus was a bit different. They still provided services to patients in the hospital, but they did other things like social events, more of the dances and dinners and fashion shows to raise funds. Today, our focus is still
on patient services and fundraising, but it’s the way we deliver patient comforts that’s changed. The whole focus on our fundraising efforts are to better provide updated patient services in our community.” Those patient comforts come in many forms. “We have received donated equipment from $1,000 to $110,000”, said Stuttard. “If we come to them with a request for equipment, that will make a difference to patient care, I don’t think they’ve ever said no to us. There generosity is outstanding! The Auxiliary also provides donations to other organizations in the community such as Merritt Secondary School, where they donate $4500 in bursaries each year. The Auxiliary also hires summer students
each year to assist them with the Thrift Store. “The Thrift Store is a landmark in Merritt that is utilized by many people in town”, Stuttard said. The Thrift Store on its own is a great service to our community, providing affordable, previously owned products to the community. The key to the Auxiliary’s success is their volunteers. The Auxiliary has volunteers both young and old, as well as men and women. However, without continual new volunteers joining, it will be difficult in the future to do the extensive work being done now. “Volunteer recruitment is crucial to the Auxiliary’s survival”, Hall said. “The work the Auxiliary does impacts everybody in the community, which will hopefully help the next generation
of Auxiliary volunteers realize how important it is to our community”, Stuttard said. “In October, Interior Health (IHA) sponsored a dinner to celebrate the 100 year milestone and celebrate the hard work of the amazing volunteers, with many of the 73 volunteers in attendance. IHA wanted to ensure that the Auxiliary was recognized for this huge accomplishment, with many staff members at the Hospital and at the Gillis House volunteering countless hours to organize,” Stuttard said. “The speeches from the staff were so heart-warming. You could see how appreciative everyone truly is”. At the event, IHA also acknowledged many of the volunteers for their long term service.

YEARS The Nicola Valley Health Centre and Gillis House Congratulate the Nicola Valley Health Care Auxiliary on 100 years of service in the Nicola Valley The Nicola Valley Health Centre was located on Priest Ave.
Picture from Nicola Valley Museum & Archives
Interior Health Authority congratulates the Nicola Valley Health Care Auxiliary on 100 years of service in the Nicola Valley. The support that Auxiliary gives the Nicola Valley Health Centre and Gillis House has a direct impact on our facilities and our community as a whole. The efforts of the community minded volunteers allows the Auxiliary to provide funds to the hospital and Gillis House for much needed equipment. They also donate annually to other community organizations, such as: Bursaries to MSS and $1000-$1500 toward the Client Christmas Party at Ska-Lu-La Workshop. Donated equipment to both the Nicola Valley Health Centre and Gillis House enhances the comfort of the patients and residents, improves the technology that the staff have to work with, and provides equipment that we may not have if it wasn’t for the auxiliary’s efforts and the support of the community.
IMAGINE Your family member has been brought to the hospital Emergency department. The stretcher, the warmed blanket from the blanket warmer, and the monitor taking your vital signs are all provided from auxiliary donations. The Lab employee comes to take blood samples. They return to the lab and utilize the various pieces of donated equipment which provide quicker results which means faster care. All of this is thanks to donated equipment. Now image your loved one is admitted into the hospital overnight. The bed that they sleep on, the TV they watch and the wheel chair they move around in, all donated by the Auxiliary. Auxiliary volunteers offering refreshments and a magazine. What if your loved one required Physiotherapy after an injury or surgery? Much of the equipment that is used in Physiotherapy is donated by the Auxiliary. When you or a loved one can no longer stay in their own home and come to live at Gillis House. The residents can thank the Auxiliary for much of the equipment there: Wheelchairs, recliner chairs, beds, and the van for excursions… The hospital and Gillis staff are not just amazing people with years of experience, they require equipment to assist them with helping you. Equipment that often is donated by hard working volunteers. So thank you to all the volunteers that make our hospital and Gillis House a better place to be.
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead, anthropologist The staff of Nicola Valley Health Centre and Gillis House would like to
The dedication of the Nicola Valley Health Care Auxiliary to the community, through donated equipment, allows us to provide better patient and resident care.
VOLUNTEERING One of the greatest Challenges the Auxiliary has in providing services to our community not enough volunteers. SO ASK YOURSELF:
Do I have an expertise that the Auxiliary could use? Do I want to feel like I have made a difference in the lives of your community? Do I need work experience? Do I have 2 to 10 hours a month I could volunteer?

Drinking and driving ruins lives. THINK ABOUT IT! To drink or drive? You have to choose Too many people are arrested every holiday season after failing breathalyzer tests at police roadside checkpoints. Driving while intoxicated puts your own life in danger, but the worst thing is that it endangers the lives of other road users as well. Make sure that this festive time of year doesn’t end in tragedy for you or anyone else. Christmas time often means one party after another with drinks galore. When you accept an invitation, plan ahead of time how you’re going to get home. Members of the same family or group of friends can designate a driver, arrange to share a taxi at the end of the evening, or use a free or for-hire drive home service. Even if your alcohol consumption is moderate you still ought to check that you’re still capable of driving safely. Use a personal breath alcohol tester to find out if you’re over the legal limit; they are on sale at most provincial liquor and wine stores. It might be hard to remember this when under the influence, but a person’s behaviour and faculties are altered by alcohol. When blood alcohol content is over 0.5 g/l, a driver’s field of vision shrinks, distance perception changes, visual reaction times increase, there is more sensitivity to glare, and vigilance and resistance to fatigue are reduced. Perhaps the ultimate danger is that alcohol consumption results in a loss of inhibition, which causes drivers to under-evaluate dangers and break traffic laws.
