News/Community Warming gifts ready for the body and soul Caution urged in Nelson Staff West Kootenay Advertiser
Our Daily Bread and Kootenay Christian Fellowship are once again hosting a community wide Christmas Eve Dinner. This dinner is open to anyone who would like to attend and will be held at 5 p.m. at 812 Stanley Street. All guests will receive a first class dinner in a pleasant and homey atmosphere, plus a wrapped Christmas gift. During the Christmas season, the Kootenay Christian Fellowship receives the majority of its support to operate Our Daily Bread. Like other charities, Our Daily Bread giving is significantly down this year from last year.

While its support has waned, the usage is up. Organizers are lately seeing an increase in meals served as the economy struggles. For most of their guests, the hot meal they receive five days a week may be the only well balanced, nutritious meal they get. They greatly appreciate individuals
Eve dinner will go to providing meals throughout the next year. Our Daily Bread provides other vital services, such as social networking, job bank, phone service, life skills coaching, safe place, internet and informal counseling to the working poor, those looking for work, the homeless, and the families that are less fortunate. In short, your donation helps provide nourishment and care, personal support and spiritual help that can be the start of a new life for their guests. Those involved with Our Daily Bread and the Kootenay Christian Fellowship are aware that there are some who do not experience the “fam-
ily” environment that the Christmas season promotes. For some folks, family members may have passed away or there may be extenuating circumstances where they are unable to make a journey to their family. At Kootenay Christian Fellowship and Our Daily Bread, they desire to create that family experience. If you would like to donate the Our Daily Bread Christmas Eve dinner, send a cheque to Our Daily Bread, 812 Stanley Street, Nelson, B.C., V1L 1N7 or donate online at www.kootenaychristianfellowship. com. not supply this incredible service this humanitarian effort would not be possible because the costs would skyrocket,” McDonnell explained. Now that its ninth year of operation is complete, McDonnell said the program has grown increasingly “touching” as more and more young parents pack shoeboxes and take the time to teach their children to think of those who are less fortunate. The young people who receive the shoeboxes have experienced the worst of sadness, drought, disease, famine, and civil war and have no access to the simple luxuries these shoeboxes provide, he said. Each shoebox gift is given to children regardless of gender, race, religion or age. When culturally appropriate, copies of a book entitled “The Greatest Gift of All,” which has been translated into 130 different languages, are offered to children after the shoeboxes have already been distributed.

Happy Holidays!
The shrinking of Trail’s retail economy has impacted local efforts for spreading Christmas cheer. The closure of the downtown Dollar Store in the Silver City—coupled with a downturn in the economy—contributed to a lower number of shoeboxes being donated to Operation Christmas Child this year, said organizer Dwayne McDonnell. Last year Greater Trail residents contributed more than 800 boxes to the program—which encourages local people to collect gifts and items assembled in a shoebox for children in third world countries around the globe—but fell more than 200 boxes short of that total this year. McDonnell said the Dollar Store gave out a lot of boxes this year and also offered people a 20 per cent discount on items purchased in the store for the boxes. At the outset of the program in mid-October, McDonnell set
a goal of 1,000 boxes from Greater Trail. “I ... may have been too optimistic but I think a ‘goal’ should be a challenge to meet,” he said. “So, even though we didn’t reach 1,000 boxes we were able to touch the lives of 600 children in a very personal way.” The program’s final total ended up with more than 600 boxes, boosted with around 50 late drop-offs. “So I think that in itself was a success,” McDonnell added. This year Operation Christmas Child will have shoe boxes heading to Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Venezuela, Paraguay, Guinea and Equatorial Guinea. To be able to do this Greyhound Canada provided free transportation costs to get the boxes to the program’s major collection centre located in Calgary, where they are checked to make sure everything in the boxes is safe for the children to receive, and then re-boxed for flight. “If Greyhound did

KELOWNA, B.C. Starting Jan. 1, 2013, FortisBC residential electricity customers will see a 4.2 per cent increase on their electricity bills from the recent BC Utilities Commission revenue requirements decision, along with a 2.3 per cent increase from rate rebalancing. The cumulative rate adjustment for residential customers will mean an increase of 6.6 per cent. For the average residential customer using 1,050 kWh per month, the change is an increase of approximately
$7.07 per month. “FortisBC works to provide our customers with safe, reliable electricity at the lowest reasonable cost,” said Tom Loski, FortisBC vice president of customer service, “but changes in the external environment are causing pressure on our rates such as financing system maintenance and improvements, along with increased purchases of power.” The BC Utilities Commission approved the 4.2 per cent increase for FortisBC electricity customers as part of the utility’s 2012/2013 revenue require-
ments. Further adjustments to electricity rates are because of rate rebalancing. Last year, FortisBC announced rate rebalancing which ensures that each customer group pays their share of the costs required to serve them, but does not generate extra revenue for FortisBC. “This is the final phase of rate rebalancing for our residential customers that came as a result of our cost of service analysis. This analysis is done periodically to ensure rates are fair and equitable between customer groups and that no

one customer class is subsidizing another,” said Loski. Therefore, the cumulative rate adjustment starting Jan. 1 for other FortisBC electricity customers will see small business customers receiving a 5.5 per cent reduction; lighting customers will see a 6.8 per cent increase; wholesale customers will see a 5.9 per cent increase and Nelson wholesale will also see an increase of 4.6 per cent. FortisBC continues to offer programs and services to help customers manage their electricity use...

Fiscal jump recorded at Trail airport Trail briefs
Revenue generated by the Trail Municipal Airport has increased 44.1 per cent from last year even as the future of funding for expansion of the facility remains in question. A report on the summary of current airport operations by manager Bryan Teasdale to the East End Services committee revealed an increase of almost $53,000 in revenue as of the end of September, up to $131,985 for the year. Teasdale said the revenue was derived from a 35.4 per cent increase in ridership through the airport’s lone commercial carrier, Pacific Coastal. That money will factor into the status quo budget that was recently requested for the service as management with the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary awaits what, if any, directives will come forth in wake of the recently aborted airport facilities review.

Short takes on items of local interest selling on eBay lately GREG NESTEROFF West Kootenay Advertiser
An envelope bearing 1911 postmarks from the long-closed Lardeau Valley post offices in Poplar Creek and Howser fetched $34 Cdn., it was mailed from the Royal Bank in Nelson to Henry Hinks of Howser. The old Howser townsite was flooded out in the 1960s by construction of the Duncan dam. The community still exists, but the post office is long gone. Poplar Creek’s heyday as a mining town was brief, but it managed to keep its post office from 1903-54. Another envelope
sent by registered mail from Howser to England sold last month for just $3, while a 1939 Poplar postmark netted $14.50 Cdn.
The Yankee Girl proved to be the largest producer in the area, operating from 1935 to 1942. • A postcard from France bearing a 1913 postmark from the Kootenay Lake settlement of Willow Point sold for $34 Cdn. The card was addressed to a Mrs.

West — Willow Point was formerly known as West’s Landing after Charles W. West, who moved there in 1901 and was postmaster from 190514. A.L.R. Cross succeeded him, but the office closed the following year.

Five artists from the West Kootenay are showing their works at a new exhibit in Rossland. The Mount Carlyle Retreat Art Show opened last weekend at the Rouge Gallery to positive reviews. The artists featured in the exhibit are Jenny Baillie, Brigitte Desbois, Louise
Drescher, Stephanie Gauvin and Mirja Vahala. The exhibit of new paintings is based on the artists’ September hiking trip into the Selkirk mountains for a painting retreat. Characterized by blue skies, a stunning full moon and towering mountains, the artists found inspiring new vistas for their works. The art show consists of 52 paintings
depicting the landscape the painters were immersed in for five days; golden larches, glaciers and rolling hills. Stephanie Gauvin said last week’s opening was a well attended show with a great atmosphere. She said guests enthusiastically viewed the new paintings and were delighted to hear the artists’ stories of their trip.
The successful opening night sold more than 10 pieces to supporting art patrons. Artist Jennie Baillie said the trip was a unique experience. “We had the freedom to apply our personal perspective in an atmosphere absent of pressure,” Ballie said. “It was with a comradely spirit that ideas were shared, doubts voiced, and

Private museum aims for a bright future in Ross Spur area serious health issues have phased out his active participation in the upkeep of the popular facility. With a total land mass of about 40 acres in the scenic valley, Don has an acre devoted to the museum which gets a fairly steady stream of visitors even though there is no formal advertising involved. “It’s strictly wordof mouth,” says Virginnia Harfman, Don’s partner of some 12 years. The link with the museum is a great fit for Harfman, who explained that she comes by the interest naturally. “I’m following in my grandmother’s footsteps, she wrote about a lot of history in the Okanagan,” said Virginnia. “I would go with her as a little kid and talk to different peo-

Fun was the goal and fun was had at GF hockey tournament cassandra chin West Kootenay Advertiser
Grand Forks Arena was host to a friendly minor hockey tournament this past weekend, with teams from Kelowna, Midway, Trail and Castlegar participating. Grand Forks Atom 2 Bruins head coach Craig MacLellan pointed out the tournament was a success with minor glitches. “All in all, I think everybody would
say they had fun this weekend,” he said. “The first half of the season has (Atom 2) at two losses, two ties and five or six wins, so it’s a good midway point for us.” The Bruins also faced off against Castlegar for a league game on Friday, which they won 8-0. Head coach Robert Payne of the Boundary Predators from Midway noted his team did well this weekend. “We won all four

games,” he said. “There were some moments where they
fumbled, but they held it together.” Payne is looking
forward to the rest of the season and added tournaments like
these are good for the team. “It helps them get used to the idea of playing more than one game over a certain time frame,” he explained. “It’s also a good lead up to the provincials.” Grand Forks Atom 1 Grizzlies goalie Erich Zinner and defenceman Blake Walkus were happy with this weekend’s tournament. “It was good,” said Zinner, who enjoys playing to find out
other player’s weaknesses. Walkus added his favourite part was travelling to the different communities to play. The Atom 1 team has another game in Nelson next weekend, but Atom 2 will be off until the new year. “We’d like to thank everyone in our community for supporting us and we hope they had a good time,” said MacLellan.

Robson pianist’s cheerful attitude – a valuable asset Barb Sinclair WKA Contributor
On this rainy dark afternoon, it was a cheerful attitude that brightened up my whole day. Nadine Livingston now calls Robson home, but she is still a prairie girl at heart, always remembering her homesteading childhood. Her parents farmed and ranched south of Lethbridge, Alberta, near the Montana border, starting up their place after they married in 1911. To this day Mrs. Livingston remembers the warm, coal heat, offsetting the biting winter cold and prairie wind outside. Her dad raised beef and many acres of oats and other grains. So she and her three brothers had that wholesome and healthy upbringing our troubled world pays dearly to have today. A neighbour of theirs frequently came to Nadine’s dad for oats – “I’ll pay when I can” he would say. This happened often, and people in those first few decades of the 1900s heard this all too often. One day her dad
needed money himself and went to this neighbour to see if he could pay toward the debt of the oats. Says Nadine “He told Dad he had no money, but Dad noticed a piano in the house.” The deal was done – no one knew how to play the piano, but the deal was done anyway! Nadine, in her young years would not have known the path that piano would take her. Only four years old, she climbed up to it and started to plunk out the notes, paying attention to how they sounded, and starting putting melodies together. “I soon learned You Are My Sunshine,” she recalled, “and to this day it’s the song I play most often.” All three of her brothers had beautiful voices, and Nadine, not being a singer, was the boys’ orchestra – they played and sang together for many years. Now decades later and four years after leaving the prairies, Nadine lives close to one of two daughters in Robson, and gives piano lessons to two grand-daughters at seven o’clock in the
morning – they race down to see who gets the first lesson. Nadine knows well how to teach, having been a school teacher in her early adult years in Canada and across the U.S. border. While having to pay attention to various health issues now, there’s still no stopping this talent that has been more than 70 years in the mak-
ing. You can still find Mrs. Livingston frequently playing the piano at Talarico Place and Castlewood – she gets them singing all their old favourites and newer ones too. There’s a little bit of a ‘bluesy’ tone in there I detected after a little recital - a lively pianist, with a good ear, and a heart for others.
Nadine Livingston’s relationship with the piano began when she was four-years-old. Barb Sinclair photo

Horoscope Michael O’Connor
for the
December 14, 2012
Tip of the Week: We are now in the final countdown to Winter Solstice 2012. Era 2012 encompasses a wider sweep of time which will actually surpass the 12-21-2012 date by several years, perhaps as much as a decade. Remember, the time frame we are referring to, 36-42 years, must be understood to be in the context of the entire Precessional Cycle (also called the ‘Great Year’) which is somewhere between 25,625 and 26, 000 years. This is why the Winter Solstice 2012 date is symbolic, it is the closest annual cycle of the Sun, the Solar Year which starts on Winter Solstice, to all the other calendars in Mayan Cosmology which have already come to term. We may liken Era 2012 to a dimmer switch process with the room getting steadily brighter and Winter Solstice to be like a light switch. Yet, those who look to the 12-21-2012 in literal terms regarding specific events that must occur on that day, lest the entire story that emphasizes this date be rendered bogus, reveal a fine weave of ignorance, cynicism, literalism and myopic vision. As mentioned last week, the world as we knew has most definitely changed and continues to do so at a very rapid rate, what has been called, ‘The Quickening’. How much do you suppose it will change in the next decade? Perhaps this accelerated phase of modern civilization emerging into a global village is the way in which we are meant to experience the end of the ‘old world’ and the beginning of the new. It should be mentioned that some have said that the predicted earth changes would not so much occur prior to 12-21-2-2012, but is the months and years relatively soon thereafter. With the last New Moon of the year and of the Great Year as of December 13, the final countdown has begun. PS – The exact time for Winter Solstice 2012 is 11:11 am, Greenwich UK time!
ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)
Your mood is getting lighter. Perhaps it is the season or something deeper or much bigger…, either way it is evident. It may even be felt as a big ‘turn-on’ somehow. And your ambitions are being spurred. This charge of energy will likely be expressed literally. Be careful you do not overwhelm or intimidate others with this surge of enthusiasm and power.
TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)
Tapping the resources of others in order to be able to keep pace with a wide array of interests and duties demanding you time is likely now. Who has what you want and need? This is a time when respective passions are meeting, converging and merging. With so much to share and to access your main challenge stands to be managing your time effectively.
GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)
A good deal of stimulating encounters is keeping you occupied and this trend will continue. As exciting as this likely is, a need to be patient is also lingering. This is an important time of learning for you. Some form of apprenticeship is very possible and ideal. Whether formal or informal, be a good student and learn from every situation and person you encounter.
CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)
A process of learning trust and faith in yourself and the world in general continues. This is a call to accept and embrace change. What once was cannot and will no longer be. This process has been steadily and rapidly underway for the past couple of years. It remains important that you be at your best every day, so this is not the time for yesterday.
LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)
Some very promising signs are being revealed for you now. If you are paying attention and trusting that life communicates, then you are aware of the significant scope of messages coming in. Take note of these and set clear intentions to follow through. As you do, your inner self will recognize that you are listening and your most important relationship of all will deepen
VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)
Some big shifts close to home and in your professional life are shaking you awake. Invariably, these play on one another. The time is right to lay the plans to take some very calculated and deliberate risks. Proactive people make lemonade when they get lemons. Fortunes are made out of apparent mistakes, accidents, struggles and failures. Be proactive!

Week
|
LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)
You have passed through a dark night. Now the dawn of a new day is here. There remain things you must do; payments that are due and new dreams to pursue. Surrendering within implies a willingness to cooperate within and without. We are the vehicles of our soul and wisdom asks us to yield to the directives and steering of the driver, within. This is classically called intuition.
SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)
Forward ahead into the future is the call now. To do so while remaining present in the moment is the sign of an awakened mind. Yet deciphering which is your best direction requires a subtler activation of discernment. Fortunately, your energy levels are running high to support the process. Exercise your beginner’s mind now and be alert to assumptive thinking.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)
A pioneering and expansive cycle continues – perfectly tailored for you. Yet, entering new territory does not always imply geography. As multi-dimensional beings, we can enter inner spaces and states. Imagination and intuition are your steeds. These are leading you to move beyond old values, priorities and appetites and the life style patterns that support them.
CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)
Stepping out of the lime light for a while is the call now. It is the season to rest, reflect, rejuvenate, visit and spend quality time beyond duty and official roles. Give yourself the gift of reigning in your lower mind and restrict it from lingering longer with your imagination than is healthy. Negatively, together they produce worry. Take time out to enjoy!
AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)
A refreshing mini cycle has begun for you. Like a break in the weather during a steep climb, you are wise to make the most of it. That means reach out and be social. Fill your tanks now so you have plenty of fuel to see you through to February. Sometimes it is good to escape, but this is not such a time. Make meaningful connections.
PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)
Getting the attention you feel you want and deserve is a current focus. A learning curve is implied. Perhaps you need to increase your social media skills or learn how to ask for a raise. Either way, it is important that you be pro-active and give to the situation. Your confidence levels should be rising steadily these days so ride that wave!

Clean liquified natural gas (LNG) can still be done
Tom Fletcher
Black Press
VICTORIA – On Friday, as the federal government was giving the green light to a Malaysian investment of billions more into northern B.C.’s liquefied natural gas megaproject, Coastal First Nations chiefs held their quarterly board meeting in Vancouver. These are now
the most powerful aboriginal leaders in North America, bankrolled by U.S. environmental groups and their wealthy charity foundation backers as guardians of the Great Bear Rainforest. A major topic was the Haisla Nation, the Kitimat partner that abruptly quit its voluntary association with the Haida, Gitga’at and other
communities over its plans to develop LNG exports. This discord comes at a bad time. Premier Christy Clark has bet heavily on LNG, not just for her government’s future, but the industrial and economic direction of the province for decades to come. Initial press reports were misleading. One had it that Haisla Chief Councillor El-
lis Ross, the B.C. government’s key ally on LNG, was “buddying up” with the Harper government on the Enbridge oil pipeline proposed to go to Kitimat, in the heart of Coastal First Nations territory. Not so. Both Ross and Coastal First Nations executive director Art Sterritt confirmed to me that they remain solidly against the Enbridge propos-
al. The disagreement is over how to power the processing of LNG, which the Haisla are pioneering with provincial assistance. Sterritt said the Haisla and the rest of the group were in agreement until a few weeks ago. The plan was to follow Clark’s solemn vow to make B.C. LNG the “greenest” in the world. All parties acknowledge that some
of B.C.’s shale gas will have to be burned to process and ship LNG to Asia. The initial idea was that one or two natural gas-fired power plants would be built, eventually backing up wind, small hydro and other renewable supplies. BC Hydro has 600 megawatts available from its dams, which would require new transmission capacity up to Kitimat to help
run the first two LNG plants proposed in partnership with the Haisla. Then the play got bigger. The B.C. government transferred Crown land on Douglas Channel to the Haisla for an LNG project planned by Shell, PetroChina and Korea Gas. And Sterritt said he started getting signals from Victoria...

Sharing an Okanagan love affair SUBMITTED
With the first printing of The Butcher, The Baker, The Wine & Cheese Maker now sold out, it’s safe to say there are going to be a lot of happy people around the province when Christmas gifts are opened this year. In the interests of disclosure, let me first explain that author Jennifer Schell also edits Food and Wine Trails magazine, which is a Black Press publication. I am a contributing writer for the magazine. I have never met Schell other than through emails. Not so many years ago, self-published books were the refuge of conspiracy theorists, local historians and UFO abductees. How times have changed. This year, some of the best books to cross my desk have been published by their authors, and Schell’s ranks among the very best of those. I was looking forward to getting a copy of the book Schell subtitles An Okanagan Cookbook as soon as it was announced as being in the planning stages. The author, who has an unbridled passion for wine and food and the people who work
with them, intended to create a book that celebrates producers throughout the Okanagan.
even penned by the food and wine producers themselves. One recipe, for instance, for fig and
La Dolce Vita Farmers, winemakers, chefs and others who toil, often in the background, to bring food to tables in homes and restaurants throughout the province were about to get their time in the spotlight. Having written a couple of series’ of stories about similar folks in the Creston Valley, and being an avid amateur cook and wine enthusiast, I knew that The Butcher, The Baker, The Wine & Cheese Maker would be my kind of book. When a copy arrived at my office, inscribed by Schell, a few minutes flipping through the pages proved that this was no wet blanket to cool my eagerness. Nicely organized into menu-like sections—starters, main courses, desserts and cheeses—with additional pages devoted to a number of oldfashioned home recipes and then some wine and food events, the book is chock-full of short biographies of people. Some are
blue cheese ravioli, is matched with short bios of chef Jeremy Luypen of Oliver’s Terrafina Restaurant, cheesemaker Gidda Pedersen of Poplar Grove Cheese and winemakers from Hester Creek Winery. It’s a clever and absorbing way to connect food with the producers of the ingredients for a wonderful experience at the table. Schell comes by her passion for food producers honestly. She grew up on an Okanagan farm, with her grandparents’ farms on each side. “This cookbook is a love letter to all those who have created, grown and nurtured our special valley on this earth,” Schell writes. “They are a delightful confluence of old and new world, blending their international influence and flavours with our local bounty, establishing a cuisine that is distinctly Okanagan. Through their recipes and stories, I am pleased to intro-
duce you to these gifted people who bring this local food to your table every day.” Having visited the Okanagan many, many times, largely to experience the very things that Schell celebrates in this book, I find it a genuine treat to get an up close and personal look at the individuals who grow and make the food, produce the wine and bring it to restaurant tables around the B.C. Interior. Some of the faces are familiar from our visits, but many more now feel like, if not friends, at least acquaintances I would like to know better. We visit wineries, festivals and markets wherever we can so that we can take away a small share of the passion and enthusiasm we invariably find. In The Butcher, The Baker, The Wine & Cheese Maker, Schell has delivered a generous helping of those very qualities, all in one very sumptuous package. LNG can be made clean Continued from P. A22
...that the industry doesn’t want to buy power from outside producers to drive LNG cooling and compression. Instead they wanted to power it directly with gas, using equipment called “mechanical drives” rather than electrical drives. In a letter to Haisla members explaining why he quit the Coastal First Nations, Ross said he was insulted by Sterritt’s
comments that the Haisla were choosing “the dirtiest way possible” to ship LNG. Ross noted that emissions would be about the same if gas is burned in the LNG plant or in a power plant nearby.
“These hulking plants are going to be sitting there, rotting...” Art Sterritt 1st Nations director
That’s true, but Sterritt points out a critical difference. If LNG producers are allowed to use singlepurpose mechanical drives, no renewable energy can ever be added. And as more LNG producers rush into B.C., reserves that would have lasted 75 to 100 years could be depleted in 30. And how does the scenario shape up after the gas is gone? “These big, hulking plants that are going to be in Kitimat are
just going to be sitting there, rotting,” Sterritt said. “It happens all over the world.” B.C.’s clean energy plan envisions extending the BC Hydro grid, developing runof-river and wind farms such as the big offshore proposal off Haida Gwaii, and ultimately a future beyond oil and gas. Now, in their rush to develop LNG, Clark and Energy Minister Rich Coleman seem poised to abandon that strategy.
