Generic drug costs to drop in April
By Tom Fletcher Black Press
The B.C. Liberal government is moving ahead with a new price policy for generic drugs that will reduce the cost by 10 per cent starting April 1, 2013. The new policy sets the price of generic substitutes at 25 per cent of the brand-name product, whether the cost is paid by the B.C. Pharmacare program, private health insurance or the patient. A further reduction to 20 per cent is set to take effect in April 2014. The health ministry cited the example of Lipitor, a widely prescribed drug for reducing

cholesterol. A one-month supply of the brandname drug costs $55, and in April, the cost of a generic equivalent will go from $19 to $15. The 2014 decrease will take it to $11 a month. Health Minister Margaret MacDiarmid said the second reduction will make British Columbia generic drug prices the lowest in Canada for some drugs, and save the Pharmacare program about $110 million over the first two years. Ontario went to a 25 per cent formula two years ago, and has since reduced the price to 20 per cent. The provincial savings will be reinvested in the B.C. health-care system, some of it in Pharmacare, MacDiarmid said. The budget for
Pharmacare has risen by about 80 per cent in the past decade, but she added there have been offsetting savings as new drugs improve treatment and reduce the need for surgery. NDP health critic Mike Farnworth said the B.C. Liberal government has made the right move, but it should have done it in 2010 when Ontario took action. Now, some of the savings are at risk again as the federal government negotiates a trade agreement with the European Union, Farnworth said. European developers of brand-name drugs are seeking to extend patent protection to prevent the sale of generics for a longer period.

Wood-fire precautions critical for family safety
There is comfort in the crackling sound of a wood-burning fireplace or stove on a cold winter’s night. However, warm and cozy can quickly turn dangerous, destructive and deadly if your wood-burning unit is not properly installed or regularly maintained. The Canada Safety Council is focusing on safe practices and reminding fireplace and wood stove users to think about safety before starting any fires. Preparation tips Preventative care and a well-designed area for burning wood can reduce the likelihood of an unintended incident. When installing a wood stove, situate it on a non-combustible surface such as a tile floor. Adequate ventilation is very important for preventing carbon monoxide poisoning; make sure a door or window is easily accessible from your wood-burning area. Consult a professional about proper installation of stove pipes. If you are using a fireplace, have the chimney cleaned and serviced by a professional regularly. Keep an area of at least one metre around the stove or fireplace clear
of anything that might catch fire or overheat. You may need to install a heat shield behind or beside the stove to prevent heat damage to any nearby walls. Firing it up Before lighting your fireplace or wood stove, open the damper to allow for good airflow. Build your fire with a small amount of dry, seasoned wood to keep the flames under control. Resist the temptation to overload your fireplace or stove. Burning too much wood at once can cause tar and creosote to build up in your chimney or stove pipes, which creates a fire hazard. Never use highly flammable materials, such as wrapping paper or gasoline in a wood stove or fireplace. These substances can create dangerous fireballs in an instant, and just like burning too much wood at once, it can cause a build-up of flammable materials in your chimney or stove pipes. Always use a screen in front of the fireplace, and never leave children unattended by a fire. Have a fire escape plan for your house and regularly review it with your family.

Other considerations Keep a working fire extinguisher in an accessible location. Check your smoke detectors monthly, and replace the batteries as necessary. You should also have a carbon monoxide detector near your fireplace or wood stove. Carbon monoxide build-up can occur if the area around your wood-burning unit is inadequately ventilated. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can include headaches and nausea. If your carbon monoxide detector goes off, get out of the building immediately and find out what needs to be done to correct the ventilation problem. With the holiday season fast approaching, remember to take deco-
NEW
rations, such as stockings off the fireplace before use. If you have a real Christmas tree, water it regularly and keep it a safe distance away from your wood stove and any open flames. Never leave your house or go to bed when a fire is still burning.
When it’s time to clean the ashes out of the fireplace or wood-stove, wait until they are completely cool and scoop them into a metal bucket. Never place the ashes in a plastic or cardboard container; it can take up to three days for embers and ashes to completely cool.
It’s true. Ovens do a lot of work during the Christmas season and all that stress can cause them to fail. If your oven takes too long to heat, JOE SHAVER doesn’t get hot enough, or emits little Licensed whiffs of gas, call us now for a preand Bonded Christmas inspection. Tax change helps smaller B.C. breweries
By Tom Fletcher Black Press
The B.C. Liberal government has changed its policy for taxing smaller breweries to stave off a possible preChristmas shutdown at a Prince George brewery and promote growth in the craft brewing business. Smaller breweries
are taxed at a lower rate than big commercial operations, until this week paying a flat tax of $1.75 per litre of bottled or canned beer and $1.20 per litre of draft. That rate applied until annual production reached 16 million litres, at which point the higher commercial brewery rate applied to the entire production

Keep your pets safe during yuletide season
By Lorie Chortyk The holidays are a time for festive decorations and special treats, but some of these seasonal items can be hazardous for your pets. Just ask Agnes. Last year, the six-year-old Old English sheepdog underwent emergency surgery to recover approximately 20 feet of sharp wire tinsel from her stomach. To help ensure your pet has a safe and happy holiday, the BC SPCA offers the following reminders: • Avoid giving bones to your dogs or cats, particularly turkey bones. Poultry bones easily splinter and can cause serious injury, while bone fragments can cause intestinal blockages or lacerations. • Chocolate and other sweets should not be given to animals. Chocolate contains theobromine, a chemical that can be deadly to cats and dogs, though not harmful to humans. The best thing you can do for your pets over the holidays is to keep them on their regular diet. Look for special animal treats instead of giving your animals cookies or sweets meant for people. • Many popular holiday plants are poisonous to animals, including mistletoe, holly, ornamental pepper and Christmas rose. Remember to keep these plants out of reach of pets – especially birds. Poinsettias are not poisonous to pets or people. This has been a long-standing rumour perpetuated for decades. Having said this, some pets that have sensitivity to the latex contained in the plant may get diar-
rhea or even vomit if they consume parts of a poinsettia. • If you have a Christmas tree and pets, you have a recipe for trouble. First, make sure the tree is well secured. Try to place decorations above paw height and use string to hang the bulbs instead of hooks, which are easily dislodged. If possible, use non-breakable ornaments. Avoid using tinsel or angel hair. Cats and dogs will ingest both, which can cause intestinal problems. • Cords for lights should be made inaccessible to pets – especially from chewing puppies and exploring kittens. Keep in mind the chemicals added to the water reservoir of your Christmas tree to keep your tree living longer won’t do the same for your pet. The chemicals are toxic to animals, so keep the reservoir covered. • Avoid purchasing pet toys with small or
soft pieces that can be chewed and swallowed. Nylon bones tend to splinter less than plastic ones. Be sure to inspect pet toys regularly and
discard deteriorating ones. Lorie Chortyk is the BC SPCA community relations general manager.

The British Columbia Conservation Foundation (BCCF), under contract to the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, advises that commencing in December lake aerators will be in operation on: • Irish Lake • Skulow Lake • Higgins Lake • Simon Lake The purpose of the lake aeration program is to minimize fish mortality associated with reduced oxygen levels during the winter months on lakes at high risk. During periods of operation, the aerator units will create areas of open water and weak ice. The BCCF would like to remind residents to stay away from safety fencing placed around the aerators. Also, as a reminder to anglers, it is unlawful to fish within 100m of any active aeration unit (see pg. 10, BC Freshwater Fishing Regulations Synopsis). Special authority criteria: • For women with postmenopausal osteoporosis, for whom oral bisphosphonates are contraindicated due to abnormalities of the esophagus (e.g., stricture or achalasia). Since the Special Authorization criteria varies between provinces and plans, it is recommended to patients to discuss reimbursement eligibility with their treating physicians. Osteoporosis could strike you or someone you love. It is a silent disease that affects nearly two million Canadians. The risk of a major osteoporotic fracture in Canada is among the highest in the world. Yet, despite the high prevalence of fractures, they are often not appropriately assessed or treated, leaving osteoporosis undiagnosed and under treated. Broken bones are associated with devastating health consequences, including pain, decreased quality of life, loss of independence, and even death. Preventing new fractures for those who have already had an osteoporotic fracture is
Osteoporosis Canada’s top priority. In 2010, Osteoporosis Canada issued new Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Osteoporosis in Canada that help physicians and patients better identify the risk of fracture, resulting in better fracture prevention and better management of osteoporosis overall. Osteoporosis statistics • Almost two million Canadians are living with osteoporosis. • More than 90 per cent of hip fractures in Canada occur in those over age 60. • In the first year after a vertebral or hip fracture, there is at least a doubling in the risk of death. • There are about 30,000 hip fractures each year in Canada; many more Canadians suffer osteoporotic fractures affecting the spine, wrist, shoulder, and pelvis. • A 50-year-old woman has a 40 per cent chance of developing a hip, vertebral or wrist fracture during her lifetime. • More than onequarter of hip fractures in Canada occur in men. • The one-in-six lifetime risk of hip fracture is greater than the onein-nine lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. • One in four women who have a new vertebral fracture will fracture again within one year. ‘Tis the season for holiday scams
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning holiday shoppers and donors to know the red flags and to be on their guard for this season’s holiday scams. Consider the following tips before doing holiday shopping and making charity donations: • Always check a business’s BBB Business Review, at www.mbc. bbb.org, before making a purchase in the store or online. Make sure the company has a physical address and telephone number. When shopping online, some websites offer electronics or luxury goods at prices that are too good to be true. Every holiday season, BBB hears from holiday shoppers who paid for a “great deal” online, but received little or nothing in return. • If you shop Craigslist or other free bulletin board sites,
look for local sellers and conduct transactions in person. Bring a friend if you’re uncomfortable meeting the seller alone. Never wire money as payment. If you’re shopping on auctions, look at seller ratings and read their reviews. Don’t buy if the deal sounds too good to be true. • Don’t let yourself get bogged down in purchases or lose track of your wallet. While you’re struggling with bags of presents, identity thieves may see an opportunity to steal your wallet or look over your shoulder to copy your debit or credit card numbers. Know where your credit and debit cards are at all times and cover the keypad when entering your PIN while purchasing items or getting money from an ATM. Make sure you put your card back in your wallet after each
purchase. • Think before you give. Door-to-door solicitations for donations are common this time of year, but when an unfamiliar organization comes knocking asking you for a donation, don’t give without gathering details. Ask for the charity’s name and address, and get full identification from the solicitor and
review it carefully. Ask to see written information on the charity’s programs and finances, then visit the Canadian Revenue Agency for a list of registered charities in Canada and confirm they’re legitimate. • Don’t click on any links or open any attachments to e-mails until you have confirmed they are not malicious. Phishing e-mails are a
common way for hackers to get at your personal information or break into your computer. Around the holidays, beware of e-cards and messages pretending to be from companies like UPS or FedEx with links to package track-
