RCMP said Wednesday’s drug bust is of the typical size in Merritt. The seizure also resulted in the arrest of two locals and three from Chilliwack. Emily Wessel/Herald
Five nabbed in Merritt drug bust Police seized rifles, heroine, morphine, marijuana and cash from a Diamond Vale duplex By Emily Wessel THE HERALD

Merritt RCMP arrested five people and seized five grams of heroine, a number of morphine tablets, a small quantity of marijuana and three rifles after searching a Diamond Vale duplex on Wednesday as part of a drug trafficking investigation. They also seized several cell phones, a laptop that was stolen from a search and
rescue mobile unit, $3,090 in cash, bear spray, and electronic scales with cocaine residue on them. Merritt RCMP Const. Kelly Bartch said the seizure was an average size for its kind in the city. “It’s not odd to find guns and bear spray. This is pretty much what we get every time we’re dealing with drugs in the community and the search warrants we do,” he said. “It’s not

stolen property for the laptop. “We expect more charges to be coming forth on the other people,” Francis said. RCMP also encouraged anyone who notices suspicious activity to call the Merritt RCMP at 250378-4262 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-TIPS. “That’s all it takes, just a small bit of information, and we can take it from there,” Francis added.
None of the five people in the residence at the time of the warrant was renting the unit, he said. “They weren’t supposed to be in there, according to the rental agreement,” Francis said, adding that is part of the investigation. RCMP have formally charged Chilliwack’s Doug Marsden with possession of a controlled substance for trafficking and possession of

said. “People grab coins out of ashtrays and this is where some of it’s ending up. The drug trade is very closely linked with our theft and with our break-and-enters. It’s all one big circle causing us grief.” Two of the five people arrested are
locals, while the other three are from Chilliwack. Officers said most of the drugs trafficked through Merritt come from the Lower Mainland, but the drug trade is tied to many other local crimes. “They really are just damaging our community,” Francis said. “The people right next door had to deal with this going on, just with the shared wall of their unit.”

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS
NVIT student places 3rd in business contest By Phillip Woolgar THE HERALD
newsroom@merrittherald.com
Nicola Valley Institute of Technology student Tanisha Suzuki and her group was awarded third place in a national business competition in Ottawa last month. The Young Entrepreneur Symposium, hosted by the New Relationship Trust and Cree Nation Youth Council, included over 100 people who competed in the Delta Hotel ballroom. “You weren’t allowed to know anyone in your group beforehand,” Suzuki said. “If you did, they would come by and take you out of your group and put you with a new one.” That placed Suzuki with people from all over Canada. “That was kind of intimidating, being put into a completely different group,” she said. Each team was tasked with completing several challenges, including creating a business name and dynamic
to decide who would be a leader. One of the challenges had each group focused on creating a business superhero. “Ours was the ‘Boardroom Bandit,’” Suzuki said. “We named ours after one of the guest speakers there who is an astrophysicist.” In another challenge, each group created a script, which was then made into a commercial for a company. A professional business filmed the commercial, while the students wrote the script and directed. The group was given a $1,000 award after being judged by business professionals. Suzuki said one of the biggest benefits she gained from participating was the connections she made. “I can get help from them with a lot of stuff already, just calling them up and knowing that I can contact them,” she said. “It really
paid off, because I am at the end of my time at NVIT, and I have really taken the basics of everything you would deal with in the business world. “I was really able to tie what I learned in school to each of the challenges.” She also made connec-
tions during conferences over the year in Vancouver and Prince George. Suzuki qualified by placing first in the regionals in Vancouver last year. New Relationship Trust, which hosted that event, took notice and sponsored Suzuki’s competition in the
nation’s capital. NRT paid for her trip and put her up at the Delta Ottawa Hotel. She stayed in Ottawa from Nov. 18 to 23. “I had a day to myself to see Parliament and go shopping and see all the sights around there,” she said.

The Nicola Valley Transportation Society is looking for people to fill the seats on its 2012 Christmas Lights Tour, which runs until tomorrow (Wednesday). The tour is about an hour-and-a-half long and goes through the more well-lit areas of Merritt. “One of my drivers usually runs around and tries to find areas that are the most litup,” Nicola Valley Transportation Society Manager Jan Oswald said. “Mainly, it’s the Diamond Vale area that has a lot and down in the lower part down on Voght.” Oswald said she
sees some of the same passengers as well as some of the same homeowners every year. She said some homeowners phone her each year to see when the bus will come by their houses. “The one at Coyote Bluffs last year was very good,” she said. “When the bus went by, he would actually come out and give candy canes to the people on the bus.” The tour is free for passengers with a monetary or nonperishable food item donation to the food bank. “I wanted something that was going to pay back to the community,” Oswald said. Oswald said the bus was full for Friday’s

tour but, by press time still had seats left for Monday’s, Tuesday’s, and Wednesday’s tours by press time. Seats can be reserved by calling Oswald at 3784080. Oswald came up with the idea four years ago to promote the city’s buses and spread cheer from the Transportation Society. She said she’s seen similar bus tours in other cities and decided to take on the planning herself. “People seem to appreciate it, and I notice that there’s more cities doing bus tours,” she said. “I have a lot of retired people or older couples that come, but maybe it’s just nice for them to get on the bus
and drive around and see the lights. And it gives other people that don’t normally ride the bus a chance to ride the bus.” She said the number of passengers on
the tour has declined recently, which could be because the buses run later and a lot of the regular passengers see the lights anyway. However, passengers on the lights tour
are invited back to the transportation society’s office for cookies and hot chocolate after the tour. The bus loads at 5:45 p.m. in the Civic Plaza parking lot, and departs at 6 p.m.

The New Year will be an exciting one for TV viewers, thanks to the arrival of Pay TV programming on Channel 3 and Knowledge Network on Channel 12. Both will come through Merritt Cablevision. Knowledge Network has been long awaited. The local School District has laboured for a couple of years to obtain the dish necessary for people of the Nicola Valley to tune into the educational programs that are broadcast from the lower mainland through the new Anik-B satellite. This kind of “participant” television offers programs purely for interest and enjoyment, as well as college level courses that can be viewed for interest or for credit. Some of the credit courses will be coming to Merritt via the local Cariboo College office.

HERALD OPINION Lawmaker stands up to ‘biased’ media He began his rookie term at city hall by standing up for exercise. One year into his municipal political career, Donovan Cavers appears to be standing up the media. Last week, Cavers told Jessica Wallace, a reporter with infotel.ca, that he has decided against speaking on a personal rezoning application, due to what he views as bias among local media in reporting on the issue. Cavers has an application before council to build a carriage suite on his mother’s South Kamloops property. The initial application was denied, but it is going back a second time after the original application was tweaked. Whether it succeeds depends on an upcoming public hearing, after which council will decide. According to Wallace, Cavers told her he doesn’t think his application to build a carriage suite on his mother’s property would have garnered media attention if he wasn’t a city councillor. “I’ve decided that, unless the media starts covering every carriage suite, I don’t want to talk about it,” Cavers told Wallace. Cavers is right, of course. Coverage of his carriage-suite application likely wouldn’t have resulted in as much spilled ink had he been Joe Sixpack and not Coun. Donovan Cavers. And rightly so. Cavers is a lawmaker who is applying to gain approval under a law (bylaw) that was revised just last year. When a lawmaker at any level of government is an applicant under one of the laws over which he has sway, there will be (and should be) public scrutiny by way of media coverage. Reporters at city hall need to cover the issue and tell the public what is happening and whether there are conflicts of interest that compel elected
Publisher Kelly Hall publisher@ kamloopsthisweek.com
representatives to recuse themselves from discussion. Cavers’ fellow councillor, Marg Spina, also applied for permission to construct a carriage suite under the bylaw amendment. The media wrote stories on Spina’s application and subsequent approval — with nary a claim of bias and threat of silence from the councillor. In fact, according to city hall, there have been a grand total of six carriagesuite applications dealt with since the March, 2011, bylaw amendment. A full 33 per cent of those applications — two — came from members (city councillors) of the very body (city council) that created and amended the bylaw to allow the applications. And reporting on this is seen as a bias? There have been many, many occasions during which a city council matter becomes more newsworthy simply because a city councillor is involved. Mayor Peter Milobar has had to step aside when an unrelated liquorlicence issue was discussed, simply because he owns a liquor store in town. The media, KTW included, has reported on that without a charge of bias or a threat of silence. Christopher Foulds is editor of Kamloops This Week.

Safe driving tips for winter PHILLIP WOOLGAR Merritt HERALD This weekend could quite possibly the most dangerous of the year for Merritt drivers and for those entering the town for Christmas. That is why it is important to ensure that proper precaution is taken when planning a trip on one of the several icy freeways surrounding Merritt. The driveBC.com website has cameras that provide a live feed of the roads at 250 of the
most dangerous sections in the province. DriveBC updates are also on Twitter and Facebook. Text messaging is also available for up-to-date information that is sent to people’s cellphones. While knowing the road conditions is a valuable tool, drivers should also be wary of breakdowns. Calls for roadside assistance double during the winter due to dead batteries, breakdowns and other issues. Winter-tread tires are also recommended, though the RCMP has said either winter tires or chains are mandatory on the Coquihalla Highway and the Okanagan Connector. These are required in all areas with the sign,

“Use winter tires or carry chains beyond this point.” Snowfall is a prime concern for drivers, but people should also be wary of dense fog that often accumulates on the major routes. To mitigate the dangers, a safe driving distance of four seconds between cars is advised by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. The speed at which a vehicle is moving should be lowered as road conditions worsen. Speed limits that are posted along freeways are those that are allowed for ideal road conditions. This is because the movement of vehicles on snow and ice is unpredictable. Keeping an eye out for black ice can be diffi-

cult, but it often appears in shaded areas, on bridges and on overpasses. These are susceptible to freezing earlier than the rest of roads. The black ice appears as a thin, and nearly invisible, coating of ice. To avoid getting into an accident, drivers should accelerate and brake slowly. Steering should also be done gradually to avoid skidding. Anticipating stops, turns and lane changes early will help accommodate these guidelines. These tips from the Ministry of Transportation aren’t all inclusive. For more information, visit th.gov.bv.ca. Information about current road conditions is available at driveBC.ca.

RENOVATIONS WITH HIGHEST RETURN Many sellers want opinions on where their effort and money can best be spent to make their homes stand out to Buyers. In many cases, the room that many buyers say is the most important to them is the kitchen. A bright, clean, well designed kitchen with updated countertops and stainless steel appliances, has normally more impact on buyers then any room in the house. Considering the time spent there and the fact that many now have country kitchens, that are used as the family gathering place and entertainment centers, this is an easy answer. The second most important room is the bathroom. And just like kitchens, should be bright, clean, well designed rooms that could very well have an impact on the salability of a house. Some other renovations where you will get the most return for your money is, replacing old carpeting or worn out flooring, new lighting fixtures, putting in energy efficient windows or a new furnace. All of these renovations are important to buyers and well worth your investment.

NVMA holds photo contest By Emily Wessel THE HERALD
reporter@merrittherald.com
The Nicola Valley Museum and Archives gave locals a chance to contribute to the area’s history during a photo contest. The Nicola Valley 12-12-12 contest marks the last time this millennium that the day, month and year will match. The next time that will happen is Jan. 1, 2101. “I thought that 12-12-12 would be a good link to get a variety of photos for the archives for the longer term,” contest organizer and museum board member Murphy Shewchuk said. “We want to let people know about the fact that we do have a lot of photos on file, and the museum archives part of it is important.” The photos will be stored in the museum’s archives, and the winning photo will earn its photographer $100. The first 100 entrants will receive a copy of Merritt and the Nicola Valley: an Illustrated History, which normally costs about $20, just for participating. Shewchuk said the museum’s directors are organizing other prizes and sorting out who will judge the contest alongside Shewchuk, who is a published photographer. By Ian Webster THE HERALD

The Merritt Bowling Centre (formerly Nicolanes), located downtown on Coutlee Avenue, was one busy facility on the afternoon of Dec. 9 as 23 local bowlers battled it out for a place on one of two InterCity teams that will compete at the B.C. Interior 5-Pin Championships in February and March, 2013. The 13 men and 10 women from around the Nicola Valley bowled a total of 10 games each — in a span of just over three hours. Each player’s average score after the ten games determined their selection to either Merritt’s ‘A’ team, which will travel to Vernon and Kelowna on March 15-16, or to the ‘B’ team that will compete in Golden, on February 9. When the dust had settled at the MBC, it was Bill McNeil and Deb Tancsa who emerged at the top of the men’s and women’s standings with averages of 239 and 205 respectively. The age of the participants in this year’s Inter-City roll-off was all over the map, from 64-year-old Jimmy Isaac down to 19-year-old
Derek Cornies. “Jimmy was bowling when I first came to Merritt in 1974,” Merritt Bowling Centre owner Ewan Turner said. “In fact, he bowled a perfect game (12 strikes in a row, a score of 450) right here, back in 2001.” Turner went on to add that in 1998, Gerry Thomas (who was also in attendance on Sunday) bowled two perfect games in one year — an almost unheard-of accomplishment. On Sunday, McNeil was on course for a 400-plus score in his fourth game. He opened with eight strikes in a row, only to see his game go south in the ninth frame. His final score of 366 was still the best of the day. McNeil, 38, came to Merritt in 2002. He is the produce manager at Extra Foods. “I started bowling in Penticton when I was five,” McNeil said. “I’ve just always liked it – especially the camaraderie. It’s good people
having fun.” The strong bond between the competitors was evident during the roll-offs. Throughout the
afternoon, there were constant high fives and shouts of encouragement intermingled with gentle teasing and good-natured banter. Despite the frequent smiles and laughter, the competition amongst the bowlers remained intense. Turner generated printouts of the results after every two rounds, and there were plenty of hungry eyes scanning the ever-changing rankings. Merritt’s ‘A’ team at the InterCity Championships will consist of McNeil, Thomas, Bill Campbell, Mark Pattison, Jordan Pinto and Jerrid Chandler, along with Tancsa, Crystal Pattison, Helen Szabo, Dianne Walker, Cindy Marshall and Doreen Nikkel. The ‘B’ squad will include Cornies, Harold Aljam, Kevin Kwitkowski, Tom Walker, Ayton Moffat and Fred Wall, as well as Jasmine Wingo, Ginger DeLeeuw, Chandra Bonthoux, Dianna Boston and Marshall.

The B.C. Interior 5-Pin Bowling Association Championships go back more than 65 years. They began in 1946 as a challenge event — strictly for men. It wasn’t until the early 60s that women were included. Bowlers from various centres would “get a team together, put up their own prize money, cover their own expenses and just go bowling for a weekend.” In 1962, there were too many mixed teams for the four-lane facility in Revelstoke to handle at one time and the now-legendary format of “shifts” was born. In 1966, a formal Constitution was drawn up, and it was decided that every centre had to have a “roll-off ” to chose their team. A banquet was held for the first time that year — on the Saturday night, in the middle of the tournament. Merritt, along with Osoyoos, officially joined in 1967, bringing the number of centres up to an even dozen. The popularity of the Interior Championships continued to grow in leaps and bounds through the 1970s and ’80s until the number of participating centres reached its current total of 24.

Drinking and driving ruins lives. THINK ABOUT IT! To drink or drive? You have to choose Too many people are arrested every holiday season after failing breathalyzer tests at police roadside checkpoints. Driving while intoxicated puts your own life in danger, but the worst thing is that it endangers the lives of other road users as well. Make sure that this festive time of year doesn’t end in tragedy for you or anyone else. Christmas time often means one party after another with drinks galore. When you accept an invitation, plan ahead of time how you’re going to get home. Members of the same family or group of friends can designate a driver, arrange to share a taxi at the end of the evening, or use a free or for-hire drive home service. Even if your alcohol consumption is moderate you still ought to check that you’re still capable of driving safely. Use a personal breath alcohol tester to find out if you’re over the legal limit; they are on sale at most provincial liquor and wine stores. It might be hard to remember this when under the influence, but a person’s behaviour and faculties are altered by alcohol. When blood alcohol content is over 0.5 g/l, a driver’s field of vision shrinks, distance perception changes, visual reaction times increase, there is more sensitivity to glare, and vigilance and resistance to fatigue are reduced. Perhaps the ultimate danger is that alcohol consumption results in a loss of inhibition, which causes drivers to under-evaluate dangers and break traffic laws.
