Resident wants to see alley closed By Treena Mielke

Emergency crews respond: Rimbey RCMP and emergency crews responded to a single vehicle accident on Friday, Dec. 7 at around 10:30 p.m. on Highway. 20 near Parkland Beach Road. Council approves capital budget By Treena Mielke Rimbey town council has given the green light to a $1.96 capital budget. At its regular meeting Dec. 10, council unanimously approved the budget, which will see several projects completed next year including the northeast lagoon outlet at a cost of $300,000 and Highway 20 intersections that have a $337,171 price tag attached. A total of $461,000 will be taken from the town’s reserves to cover the cost of capital projects and the remainder will come from grants. Rimbey CAO Tony Goode said $800,000 will come from the Municipal Sustainability Initiative grant, a transportation grant and a federal gas tax. Approximately $995,000 has been carried forward from previous grants. The amount of grants the town will allocate for specific projects will be finalized in the spring when the province gives its go-ahead. Grants not used this year will be carried forward to help cover next year’s projects. Using reserves to cover some of the costs and approving the capital budget early gives council a head start on getting tenders out, said Mayor Sheldon Ibbotson. “I don’t see using reserves as an issue because our reserves are healthy. Over the last two years they have increased and so we feel comfortable using some of them

this year.” Ibbotson said approving the budget early will pay off in the long run. “We will save money by putting our tenders out early.” Other capital projects include two kilometres of trails ($200,000), sidewalk replacements ($103,636) and 58th Ave – 48-45A St. ($328,273). Smaller projects include the curtain/berm/desludge/defuser repair, ($63,245) monitoring wells/drainage ($92,000), community centre air handling unit ($25,000), community centre washroom renovation ($60,000), street sweeper ($245,000), public works truck ($26,800), concrete crushing ($50,000), compactor truck ($12,000) backhoe ($110,000) mower ($9,000). Ibbotson said there were no surprises in this year’s budget. “There is always more to do than we have money for but the grants we have included in the budget are guaranteed and we have a good healthy reserve built up.” During budget deliberations council considered a wish list of projects it would like to see completed but can’t afford. These include electronic signage, a BMX park, BMX track, dog park, grader and work on 51 and 52 Streets. Goode said council plans to complete the operating budget in January and it could be finalized by the middle of the month.

Council’s decision to install speed bumps, reduce the speed limit and increase the RCMP presence at an alley behind Drader Crescent rather than close it does not sit well with at least one Rimbey resident. Brent Bratland, who lives on Drader Crescent, said council’s solution is only a Band-Aid approach to the problem and closing the alley, which he referred to in a letter to council as a short-cut raceway, is the only viable option. “It’s gotten to the point of being stupid,” said Bratland. “People are using it as a street.” Bratland said council’s decision to install speed humps in the spring does nothing to alleviate the problem of safety in the winter. “When they are removed and the ice and snow are hard packed, the issue of safety still remains as a speeding vehicle takes longer to stop under those conditions.” Bratland noted that seven of the

eight people canvassed by Coun. Scott Ellis were in favor of closure. “Those people were not heard,” he said. A letter to council from Dr. Christine Ellis (Scott Ellis’s wife) stating she used the alley when she needed to get to the hospital quickly did not convince Bratland the roadway should remain open. “A physician making her way to the hospital would have to go around the school during certain hours and in a town the size of Rimbey, distance is not the problem. Other doctors live a distance away from the hospital and have to judge their driving and departure times accordingly,” he said in a letter to council. Bratland is concerned a fatality will occur before the alley is finally closed. “It is just time,” he said. Council, at its regular meeting, Dec. 10 agreed to respond to Bratland’s letter, noting they plan to go ahead with their decision.

Look for the magic of Christmas Merry Christmas! It’s time. Time to hurry up and get it all done. Wrap the presents. Decorate the tree. Attend the Christmas parties. Be with family and loved ones. Eat, drink and be merry. Deck the halls, sing carols and hang wreaths all over the place. Drink eggnog. Treena Mielke And, most imporOn The Other Side tantly (or not) read Treena’s column. Okay, the last item can, and probably will, be scratched off the Christmas to do list and the newspaper itself relegated to the recycle box so as to leave more room important stuff like presents and butter tarts. But for those of you who actually chose to ignore the Christmas clock ticking away the minutes and hours and, indeed, the last few shopping days before Christmas and read my humble attempts at writing, thank you. Thank you for reading my column all year. For laughing. For crying. For muttering, but not too loudly, about grammatical errors or spelling mistakes that somehow slipped by human eyes and made it into the print media where it will remain forever and ever, a humble reminder of my inadequacies. And thank you for letting me take this time to wish you all the very best of the season however that looks for you. And I truly do wish everyone, whether they’ve been naughty or nice, or a little bit of both, have the joy of having at least a few moments of Christmas card perfection dropped into the imperfection of the holiday season. It is, of course, those moments that can’t be bought, which would, sometimes no doubt, make them a whole lot easier to attain. It is kind of weird that I, at least, struggle over Christmas lists and agonize over what to get my children, my grandchildren and lots of other people, when the unwrapped gifts always end up being the best presents, anyway. I know this in my head, but the other night here I am laying in my bed thinking, thinking, thinking, my thoughts unfinished and scattered like a whole bunch of unwrapped presents. “Well, we got Emilie the pedicure thing, and Jackson the Lego. I can’t believe his dad is getting him a punching bag, that was my idea. MY IDEA. Anyway, there is only Kallie and Ben and Dylan left and, oh, yes, what about the neighbors, who shovel the walk and the Chinese Christmas thing and what about my sisters? Yikes, I need to sleep. And, so I fall asleep and am immediately visited by the spirit of Christmas past. Who knew? I see a Charlie Brown Christmas tree and burned butter tarts. I see me searching frantically for the car keys so we can go to Grandma’s on Christmas Eve, but one of the kids has thrown them in the toy box. I see a Christmas tree that has more branches on one side than the other so we keep turning it around and finally it falls over. And I see me making a stocking for the new baby with an old red towel and some white fluff. And I see our family sitting in a quiet church on Christmas Eve lit only with candlelight and the feeling of absolute joy that permeates my entire being when I hear the choir sing. And then I wake up. I’m late. Again. But somehow, it doesn’t matter. I found it. The magic and meaning of the season. It’s back. And it’s all good. Merry Christmas, everyone. I hope you find it, too! Your own special magic of the season.

Power bills will soar, Anglin warns By Treena Mielke Albertans can expect their electricity bills to soar in the new year, says MLA and Wildrose energy critic Joe Anglin. Anglin, the MLA for Rimbey Rocky Mountain House and Sundre stands by his belief the transmission lines recently approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission are not needed. “The lines have always been wrong for a number of reasons. They have never been needed and as new information becomes available we find new reasons as to why the lines are not needed.” Anglin said the Torries won’t admit they are wrong about the lines, but documents they relied upon as fact regarding the issue have now been reputed by their authors. He said PC MLAs refused to answer questions regarding the subject during the last sitting of the legislature. “They will never admit they are wrong,” he said, “but really the right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing.” Anglin said Albertans can expect to pay more for the decision to go ahead with the lines which connect the Genesee

area west of Edmonton to the Langdon area east of Calgary. “Your electricity bill will double as a result of this. Expect it to start to skyrocket in January.” Construction for the new lines is projected to begin in January with site preparation. It is expected to take about two years with the line to be in service in the spring of 2015. More than 60 per cent of the approved route is to parallel existing transmission lines. In a press release, Scott Thon, AltaLink president and CEO, said the line is critical to ensuring the reliability and efficiency of he transmission system — avoiding system congestion and allowing the competitive power generation market to work to the benefit of all Albertans. “In the last 20 years, Alberta has welcomed more than one million new residents and our demand for electricity has doubled,” he said. “Since January 2010, we’ve had more than 4,500 discussions with stakeholders through open houses, information centres, one-on-one consultations, phone calls and written correspondence.”

UFA heroes initiative honours Albertans UFA made donations to more than a dozen non-profit and community-based organizations as a result of the 2012 Small Town Heroes contest. The UFA Small Town Heroes initiative honours rural Albertans who see a need in their community and act on it, making a long-lasting, positive impact with no desire for accolades or compensation. This year’s grand prize recipients were Ed Boychuk from Smoky Lake, Alberta, and Mack Erno, from Teepee Creek. Yes, there is a Santa Claus!

The Rimbey Curling Club sent out their wish list to replace aging heaters and repair drafty doors in their club. Penn West Exploration donned the attire and stepped forward with a generous donation of $9,000. Penn West Exploration has been operating in central Alberta, and specifically the Rimbey area, for several years. They strongly believe in supporting various initiatives in the communities in which they have a presence. Their goal is to remain a caring corporate citizen, and act as a catalyst to improve business and personal development in such communities. As the recipients of such a wonderful donation, the Rimbey Curling Club is very appreciative of the difference the repairs have made to our facility and the improved comfort of our members. Our club members, as well as the residents of Rimbey and area, thank Penn West Exploration for your ongoing support of our community. Our Town and Country Bonspiel will be held on January 4-6, 2013, and we look forward to having lots of people participate. Enter your team, or enter as an individual and we will put you onto a team. Or just come and enjoy our lounge and viewing area, socialize with friends and check out the new improvements. For info phone the club at 843-2737.

CHRISTMAS

Santa Night provides Christmas fun and cheer By Treena Mielke Despite the bitter cold, the spirit at Rimbey’s Santa Night was warm and friendly. Cheryl Jones, one of the organizers of the Dec. 7 event, said a fairly good crowd attended the event. “I think it was a good night. It was the coldest night we have ever had but we have lots of hardy Albertans out there.” Jones attributed the success of Santa Night to the fact businesses and individuals in the community pitch in to help out. “It’s really nice to see the community pull together,”

she said. “There were so many people and businesses who donated food and items and lots of volunteers who helped out during the event, itself.” This year, Santa Night had a rather unwelcome visitor, who did his best to steal attention and presents and enjoy himself in the process. The Grinch, dressed in the appropriate attire, snuck in under the beautifully decorated Christmas tree and stole some presents. And then he ran. Luckily some observant children spotted the Grinch and were determined not to let him get away with such

thievery. “I had quite a workout,” said the Grinch (aka Ben Nesbitt). “It turned into a soccer match as I tried to outrun the kids.” Nesbitt said he spent a good part of the evening running away from the kids who were determined to catch him. “I certainly didn’t get cold, I was too busy running,” he said. The Grinch was finally arrested by an RCMP officer from the Rimbey detachment who was alerted that the Christmas thief was being naughty and needed to be apprehended. Meanwhile, even as the Grinch tried to steal some Christmas cheer, the spirit of the season flourished and it was business as usual on Santa Night at Pas Ka Poo Park. Children of all ages snuggled up to

Santa to tell him their Christmas wishes, Keith Kendrew and his trusty donkey continued to give rides to children and Stuart Lister and his team of horses took families on a frosty tour outside of the park. A scavenger hunt and carol singing was also part of the evening’s festivities. Annette Peck, who set up her Big Brothers Big Sisters booth inside the pavilion and later joined a few other hardy souls around an outdoor fire, enjoyed the evening. “I couldn’t hardly feel my feet,” she said with a laugh, “so I came out by the fire to try and get warm. I thought it was a great night, though. So many activities planned. I was really impressed.” Jones reminds the public the lights at Pas Ka Poo Park will be on every night throughout December until 9 p.m.

Christmas events to showcase cowboys By Amelia Naismith

Rylee Mallo, 16, and Chelsie Fontaine, 15, from Buck Lake, brought antlers from the white-tail deer they shot earlier in the season to be scored at the Rimbey Fish and Game scoring night held Dec. 11 at the Super 8 Motel. Antlers were scored by Daniel Roy and Gary Schorlmer, who were assisted by Bruce Anderson. Treena Mielke Photo

Youths bring in antlers for scoring By Treena Mielke When the white-tailed deer bounded gracefully over a barbed wire fence about 200 yards ahead of her, 16-year-old Rylee Mallo leveled the sights of her 7-mm rifle on the moving animal and pulled the trigger. It fell about 15 yards from where it was shot, the carefully aimed bullet proving fatal. Mallo, who was one of the youths in attendance at Rimbey’s Fish and Game antler scoring night held Dec. 11 at the Super 8, was pleased with her successful hunt. “My mom and I knew he was out there,” said the plucky teen, who hails from Buck Lake. Mallo has been hunting for three years and said she and her mom, Robyn, fill their freezer with wild game every year. Fifteen-year-old Chelsie Fontaine, also from Buck Lake, brought down a mule deer this year using a .30-30 rifle. “It is my first year of hunting and I was really surprised. I was out hunting with my stepdad and I got a rib shot.” Eight mule deer, 10 white-tailed deer, two elk and one moose were brought in for measuring, said Daryl Hunt, Rimbey Fish and Game president. “It was great, we had about 50 or 60 people present. They just The Gull Lake Thursday night golf visited and mingled league would like to thank their among themselves. July and the Ponoka Stampede may be a part of the week recognized as a Cowboy Christmas, but this year, for the first time, the Ponoka Broncs Rodeo Academy is gearing up for an event to showcase cowboys around Christmastime. The Broncs Academy is presenting a family dance and movie night as a kickoff to three more days focusing on rodeo family fun: the Ponoka Rodeo Masters Ultimate Cowboy and Cowgirl Championship. “The kickoff is kind of a chance for families to get out,” said Scott MacGregor, one of the events’ coordinators and a teacher at Ponoka Composite High School. The family dance and movie will take place Dec. 28 at the Calnash Ag Event Centre. Call PCHS for ticket details at 403-783-4411. On Dec. 29 the Calnash Ag Event Centre will host a rough stock futurity and derby, “which will feature the best young stock and riders from around,” said Scott Wyzykoski, organizer with the Rodeo Masters. The Ultimate Cowgirl Championship will take place on Dec. 30. Fifteen cowgirls will compete in seven events: barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, breakaway roping, team roping, cow riding and chute dogging. Dec. 31 boasts the Ultimate Cowboy Championship. Wyzykoski said 15 professional cowboys will entertain crowds by competing in all six rodeo events: team roping at 1 p.m. and bareback riding, saddle bronc, bull riding, calf roping and steer wres-

tling for the 7 p.m. performance. A bareback and bronc riding school will also be held during the day, Dec. 29 and 30. There will be six instructors, three for each event, as well as a classroom portion and equipment check, said Wyzykoski. “They’ll be riding something called a spur board,” he said. “They’ll get on at least one bucking horse too, if they want.” “It’s open to absolutely anyone. There will also be some professional cowboys there as well,” Wyzykoski added. Tickets for the school are $50. The proceeds from the family night and the rodeo events are going to support the Broncs Rodeo Academy. Students will also volunteer throughout the event. “We are giving our students the opportunity to give back to their community,” said MacGregor. MacGregor wants the focus of all four nights to be family fun and a way to maintain the Broncs Rodeo Academy in Ponoka. With Ponoka’s great rodeo past and inevitable future, MacGregor believes Ponoka is the perfect place for the academy.

hibition of 20 new oil paintings and one installation piece by Burlington, Ont. artist Rosemary Sloot. The exhibit explores the post-war emigration of the Dutch to Canada. In telling her own family’s story, Sloot is telling the story of every Dutch immigrant, and in telling of the post-war experience, the story of many immigrants. “My efforts as artist-chronicler have resulted in a series of intimate works that are narrative by intent and reveal themselves readily while they recover personal history and speak to common universal themes of loss, uprootedness, family and individual identity, sacrifice, persistence, hope and faith,” Sloot says of the Immigrant exhibition in her artist’s statement. In his article for the May/June issue of Dutch, The Magazine, Tom Bijvoet writes of the exhibition: “In her highly ac-

complished at times almost photographically realistic style, Ms. Sloot’s paintings bring the emotions of the immigrant and his burden across in their most raw and tactile form. “Those who attend the show would be advised to stop by each painting and look at it with an eye for its layered detail and its symbolism. Each one, like Burden of the Immigrant, carries a huge amount of meaning, of story, for each one of us, although our stories may differ in the details. For this exhibition Ms. Sloot has created a collection of works that should be recognized as a significant addition to the representation of a quintessential Canadian experience — are we not all immigrants?” Immigration was curated by George Wade at the Burlington Art Centre. Rosemary Sloot is a senior visual artist living

and working in London, Ont.. She was born in Simcoe, Ont., two months after her parents landed in Canada. They had just emmigrated from The Netherlands. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and with a master’s from the University of Alberta, both in painting. Rosemary Sloot has an exhibition history of 34 years. Her works are included in a number of major corporate collections in Canada and in private collections in Canada, the USA, Australia and The Netherlands among others. The gallery is located in the Atrium of The King’s University College at 9125-50 St., Edmonton. The public is welcome. Immigrant is on display at The King’s University College Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. until Jan. 15. Admission is free.

Big Brothers and Sisters are needed By Treena Mielke

Being a Big Brother or Big Sister could be an awesome Christmas gift for some child who is lonely and would value a friend a lot more than a new bicycle or video game. In Rimbey there are four such children on a waiting list to be matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister. Program co-ordinator Annette Peck said in-school mentoring is a small commitment that makes a big difference. In-school mentors are required to spend time with their Little Brother or Little Sister for one hour once a week during the school year. Peck said mentors make a huge difference. “Statistics show it can make a huge difference in their lives. It helps with such issues as self esteem, friendship skills, school attendance and school performance.” For more information about in-school mentoring or the Rimbey Big Brother Big Sister program, contact Annette Peck at 403-843-1066.

Rimbey RCMP investigated over 45 files. Highlights of the week include impaired driving, uttering threats to kill, assaults, criminal harassment, break and enter and other criminal matters. For those on the “naughty” list… Mounties continue to round up persons on the “Wanted” list. Several folks have been arrested and put behind bars recently who were out and about trying to avoid being captured by the law. If you are on the run and are tired of looking over your shoulder, you can just drop by the detachment anytime. We will be glad to ease your guilty conscience. Farm theft Thieves helped themselves to a John Deere riding lawn mower from a farm site near Highway 20 north of Hoadley. The criminals also broke into the residence at the time of the incident. Officers are continuing to investigate the matter and are following up on all leads at this time. Check Stops planned Police will be targeting impaired drivers this week. Check Stops will be conducted at various hours of day and night. Officers will be looking for any drivers whose nose resembles Rudolph’s. Report a poacher More and more poaching complaints are being reported. Several deer have been shot and left in the Leedale area. In many cases, the animals were shot at night using the moonlight and/or spotlights. Other

cases are being reported in the Medicine Lake Road area west of town. If you witness such a crime such, please report it immediately. SRO in provincial court Police have solved more and more crimes this last month causing a huge backlog of cases in the court system. Last Friday’s courtroom was filled to the point of standing room only for several hours. If you plan on taking in some court action, you better arrive early from now on to save a seat. Plan your Valentines date night If it’s been awhile since you were out on a “date night”, plan ahead and check off the evening of Feb 9. Rimbey Victim Services Unit is hosting a “black tie” type affair at the Rimbey Community Centre. There will be a 17-piece band, a fully catered splendid meal and much fun and laughter. For more information on this spectacular gala, please call (403) 8436786 or (403) 843-8494. Tickets are on sale now and going fast. Merry Christmas from the Mounties The Rimbey RCMP detachment wishes everyone a blessed holiday season. A special thank you to all the kind and generous people who dropped by our office with fresh baked cookies and Christmas cakes. They were delicious. We would also like to thank all the thoughtful folks throughout the three counties we patrol for the coffee and goodies offered to us while we were out patrolling their neighborhood this past year. It is our honor to serve you all. Merry Christmas! If you have any information on these or any other crimes, please call the Rimbey RCMP at (403) 8432224 or Crime Stoppers 1-800-222-8477, #8477 on Telus Mobility or *8477 on Rogers AT&T. Design phase of Agrim Centre almost finalized By Treena Mielke The design phase of a proposed agricultural centre in Rimbey is nearing completion. Tim Edge, spokesperson for the Rimbey Agrim Centre, said mechanical and electrical designs have almost been finalized. Once the working drawings are established, the project will go out for tender, he added. “There’s a lot of little steps to be completed, but we are almost through the design and development phase.” Phase 2, with some initial construction, is slated to begin early in the new year, he

added. Several volunteers answered a request made at Rimbey Agricultural Society’s annual general meeting held Dec. 6 to help with the project. “We did have volunteers step up at the meeting. We are grateful for the volunteers we have, but we can still use more who are committed to doing some leg work,” said Edge. Private and corporate sponsors are also needed and anyone who wants to spend dollars to see their name attached to Agrim Centre is encouraged to come forward, Edge said. The $3.4 million, 60,000-square-foot

building is to include a riding arena and a 900seat grandstand as well as meeting space and a boardroom. The building, which is to have an outside balcony, is to be located inside the existing track and infield of the rodeo grounds. The use of a solar wall and the ability to collect rainwater for the building’s non-potable water needs is part of the green technology to be used in the construction of the building. Edge said a feasibility study conducted to determine the validity of the project showed a new ag centre would provide the potential for a two million dollar annual boost to the

12123ZF0

community. “Our old building has been too small for any feasible equine or bovine events in central Alberta. After seeing the success of the Ponoka Ag Events Centre, our ag society decided to follow suit, with the full support of Ponoka County.” Edge said rodeo and horse groups and oil-related companies looking for trade show space have already made contact with the ag society. “The possibilities for its uses are limited only by imagination, because it’s designed to be so multi-functional.”

Saint Santa Claus’ ancient history explored The Saint Who Would Be Santa Claus by Adam C. English c.2012, Baylor University Press $24.95 U.S. and Canada 245 pages Naughty or nice? Yep, you’ve been both this year. You’ve been nice because it’s the right thing to do, it gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling, and you want to make the world a better place. You’ve been naughty because it’s fun. You’ve been both but not because of some fat guy in a red suit. You stopped believing in Santa years ago,

but read the new book The Saint Who Would Be Santa Claus by Adam C. English, and you might change your mind. You know him as Santa Claus. He also goes by Sinterklaas, Kriss Kringle, Père Noël, and Father Christmas and he, in his familiar jolly old Terri elf incarnation, has been Schlichenmeyer around about 100 years. The Bookworm Santa as gifter is a few centuries older than that, but the real Santa showed up some 1,750 years ago. His name was Nicholas and he was born in the ancient Mediterranean city of Patara sometime after the year 260, according to an eighth-century biographer. The biographer, like most literate people of his time, was given to florid language (straightforward prose, says English, was “gauche and uncouth”) and facts were “disdained,” so it’s no surprise that Nicholas’ story is filled with fanciful miracles and other phenomena. Nicholas was, by any account, loved by his upperclass family. He was well-educated and was given a solid religious base on which to grow. The latter allowed him “remarkable signs of spiritual maturity at a young age,” and he was ordained a priest at age 19, about a year after having lost both his parents in a plague. Nicholas was known as a great lover of children, and his generosity is legendary. The main story attributed to him involves the dowries of three destitute sisters bound for prostitution. On three successive nights, Nicholas threw money in their father’s window, to save the girls — possibly his earliest gift. He took his ministry seriously and his kindness was widely known throughout Europe. Nicholas died at around age 70.

Through the centuries, because of miracles and anecdotes connected to him, Nicholas became the patron saint of pawnbrokers, newlyweds, bankers, voyagers, firemen and pilgrims and others. And he’s beloved by generations of children who know him by a different name… The Saint Who Would Be Santa Claus is steeped in ancient history, Biblical teachings, legend, and Roman society. t’s sweeping in depth and intelligence. That gives it an interesting flair that teeters on the sometimes-notso-interesting. Author Adam C. English starts with

modern pop culture and quickly gets to the nitty-gritty of Santa’s roots. He then dives into pagan and Christian history and pulls us out with a centurieslong story of a saint who some doubt ever existed before plunging back into fourth century Rome. That back and forth sometimes kept my attention but was more often too much for me to follow. Still, I think biblical scholars will enjoy this book more than I did, and if that’s you, or if you’re very interested in ancient history, ask for it. The Saint Who Would Be Santa Claus might be a gift that’s nice.

New Bentley history book becomes available By June Norvila It is a fabulous time for the Bentley and District Historical Society. The new Bentley history book, Bentley - A Gateway through Time, is ready to be offered for sale. On Dec. 27, there will be an official book launch combined with a Queen’s Jubilee open house celebration. There will be free activities, displays, snacks and refreshments from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Blindman Valley Agricultural Centre. A program will start at 3:30 p.m. There are five distinctive limited edition sets, four of which will be auctioned off

at that time. Free horse-drawn sleigh rides courtesy the Bentley Museum Society will be offered by Stuart Lyster, weather permitting. It is hoped many residents and families will attend. The present Bentley Historical Society was established in 2005. Their first project was the reprinting of the 650page history book originally printed1982 that had been simply titled Bentley and District Early History. There were no more copies available and some people were requesting it.

They started holding monthly meetings. Funding was needed and a cover as close as possible to the original was used in the 2005 reprinting. “That was a fairly easy project as we were lucky that an untouched copy was found and it was just a matter of getting it photocopied,” said historical society director Cora Knutson. Phase 2 of the society’s mandate, compiling information for a follow up and more comprehensive Bentley and area history book, has taken much longer and an inestimable amount of time and research. The book was originally going to be only one volume around 500 pages but soon it became a much larger task. Because of the amount of information submitted and collected, the new 2012 history of Bentley and area is a two-volume set with about 500 pages in just the first volume alone that contains family histories. “It is too bad that some of the families who didn’t put anything in the original history book still didn’t submit for this book, and they will be sorry they didn’t when they see the (current) book,” says director Suzie Wiese. The second volume has almost 750 pages and covers clubs and organizations, schools and districts, churches and area cemeteries, farmsteads and businesses, recreation and arts and culture and more. The municipal, provincial, and federal archives were collected from. Members went out and took lots of pictures themselves. It became so hard to keep track of the enormous amount of volunteer hours put in by many on the board that they gave up trying. After the name was decided, Jack Siebenga, with input from others, designed the front cover. There are lots of photographs included in both volumes. Some people originally on the board have come and gone but current members of the historical society are:

president Jack Siebenga, secretary Myrna Robinson, treasurer Lorna Landry, and directors Cora Knutson and Suzie Wiese with other active board members Heather Osborne, Ena Boot and Stan Anderson. Bentley - A gateway Through Time can be purchased as a two-volume set for $75 from society members on and after Dec. 27. The low price is due to donations and grants used to cover the costs to keep the price low so everyone can afford it. Major funding came from a Government of Alberta Community Initiatives Program grant (CIP grant) and a casino the group worked through the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission. Other supporters included the Bentley & District Agricultural Society, the town of Bentley, the Bentley Museum Society, Bentley Elks Lodge No. 318, Bentley Royal Purple Lodge No. 264, and the Bentley & District Farmer’s Market. There were also memorial, business and private donations and more. After funding was applied for and received for the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Celebration another dimension was added to the book launch event. The historical society was the only Bentley group to apply for the federal Canadian Heritage grant, only one was allowed per community anyway, and it has to be used up in 2012, so the special combined celebration was planned. It is an exciting, satisfying time for society members as they give a sigh of relief after a job well done, but at the same time they are saddened by the conclusion of the seven-year undertaking. “I don’t know what I will do now that it is done,” said Knutson who has dedicated so much time to the project. “We had a lot of fun doing it.” The other members sitting around the table nod in complete agreement.
