Thieves attempt to steal Christmas Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net A report was made to the Golden/Field RCMP detachment about a break and enter which happened on Dec. 13 at approximately 12:15 p.m. A Golden resident was going to their parents’ summer home on Quartz Crescent when they noticed something was out of place. The resident was going to the house to wrap Christmas presents, but when she pulled into the driveway she noticed a vehicle, which she did not recognize, at the house. The vehicle was a 2007, black, Dodge Ram 4-door pick up. A female was spotted in the passenger seat. The resident got out of her vehicle and started to walk towards the house when a male ran from the house carrying a number of things. The resident yelled at the male who jumped into his vehicle with the items and drove away.

The person who was going to the house then got into her car and followed the vehicle from the location until it got near the RCMP detachment on the highway. When the vehicle carrying the two people continued heading west on Highway 1, the local resident went to the detachment and reported the incident. RCMP had a description of the vehicle and a licence plate number and immediately dispatched RCMP members after the vehicle and then contacted a representative at the scales west of Golden on the highway. It was confirmed a vehicle like the one described had passed by the scales. RCMP then contacted Revelstoke RCMP who dispatched two of their own members towards the Rogers Pass to attempt to locate the vehicle. RCMP did an extensive search of the highway and side roads over a number of hours but did not locate the vehicle.

The vehicle was reported to be spotted a number of times during the afternoon but the RCMP did not find it. Meanwhile at the detachment, it was determined the ordinal licence plate was not correct so staff started to narrow down possible matches of the make and model of the vehicle and other information. RCMP found a vehicle and identified a suspect out of Calgary, and with the help of RCMP in Calgary learned they have a history of the suspect. On Dec. 14 it was reported to police that the vehicle involved in the break-in had been spotted in a yard on Lafontaine Road. After an extensive search RCMP determined the vehicle, if it had been there, was no longer in the area. RCMP are still continuing the investigation with other detachments, working together to solve the crime and find the people involved in the crime.

Bringing the magic to the Golden hospital Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net The Mountain Magic Quilters Guild recently announced the winners of a raffle which raised $1,562 for the pediatric cart at the Golden and District Hospital. According to the (Interim) Health Ser-

vice Administrator Golden/Invemere, Deborah Austin, the cart is an important piece of equipment for managing pediatric emergencies. “The response time of healthcare providers in a pediatric code is critical to patient survival, and access to resuscitation equipment is a key component in delivering optimal emergency care,” she said. “Each drawer in the cart is colour coded to match a baby/child weight/size. One just needs to pull out the right coloured drawer…..and all the emergency supplies

required to resuscitate and manage a baby/child of a certain size are there. It is fast and efficient, and saves lives. We are indeed lucky to have this piece of equipment in our emergency department.” Thanks to the quilters guild was also passed on by the administrative assistant at The Golden and District Hospital, Tammy Perks. “We have great community support and we appreciate everything that the community groups do to improve the facility for the members of the community.

Thank you so much for the support for these special purchases, it is greatly appreciated,” Perks said. She also added that in times when funding is limited, these kinds of donations help out people in the community. “They are critical because obviously capital funds are limited and budgets are always strained. These are the things that we are able to purchase over and above, that makes the service that much better for the patients that we care for,” she said. On hand for the draw was Shirley

McAllister, the member of the Mountain Magic Quilters Guild who made the three prizes for the raffle. McAllister said she felt it was very important to help children be looked after with the best equipment possible. She added that parents and children should be able to be helped in Golden and not have to go to go away for treatment. The first prize of a handmade quilt went to Bev Ewen, second prize of quillow was won by Diana Zdanovich and third prize of a placemat set went to Caroline Scott.

Upgrade required on playground Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net

Alexander Park Elementary School is looking to upgrade one of the two playground structures on the school’s grounds. “We are looking to replace a very significant piece of playground equipment… You can see what a huge part of our community this playground is,” said Chenoa Paccagnan, secretary of the school’s Parent Advisory Council, who spoke in a delegation to town council. “It’s in a central location in our community.” The playground is situated near many town facilities like the Rec Plex, the Arena, the Curling Club, the pump track, the skateboard park, and the green gym, as well as the municipal campground. The delegation requested a grant in aid of $5,000 to replace the old one, which is now “the worst structure in the district,” according to Paccagnan, and in fact, no longer meets CSA safety standards. “It has been a well-used and well-loved structure but its time is coming to an end.” The PAC will also be seeking a Rick Hansen Foundation grant to make it an inclusive structure, mainly through the incorporation of the U-swing. The budget for the new playground will be just over $90,000.

The PAC reserves account for $10,000 of that, and $30,000 will come from the school district. The PAC is seeking to make up the rest with grants (grant in aid from the town, the Rick Hanson Foundation grant, a grant from UBCM, and they are also looking into the Columbia Basin Trust, local corporate sponsorships, local service clubs, and the BC Tire Stewardship). “We anticipate raising all money to replace the entire playground, and to install a pourin-place base,” said Paccagnan in the PAC application. The playground is expected to last 25 years, and the school district will take full responsibility for maintenance and repairs for the life of the structure. The reason the PAC is asking for the money so early is because there are funds left in this year’s budget, and next year there may not be. So council has referred it to discussion at the Dec. 18 council meeting. Without the community support, this project will not be feasible. It requires financial contributions form various sources. “This playground makes our community more attractive for people who want to relocate here, and for our visitors,” said Paccagnan.

RCMP Report: Threats uttered through Facebook are a crime Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net Golden/Field RCMP responded to 37 files in a one week period. Mental Health Act The RCMP in Golden dealt with four situations in Golden involving the Mental Health Act. One individual had a Mental Health Act warrant issued out of the Okanagan region of British Columbia. The individual was arrested and detained in Golden and will likely be sent back to the Okanagan region or Cranbrook in the near future. In a separate incident RCMP had a report of a suicidal male. Upon arriving on the scene the RCMP arrested the male under the act and took him to the Golden and District Hospital before it was determined he should be taken to a facility in Cranbrook. On Dec. 10, 2012, the RCMP were called out to a person who was believed to be suicidal. The person was attended to under the Mental Health Act and taken to the Golden Hospital. Four highway accidents There were four single

vehicle accidents on Highway 1. There were no serious injuries during these incidents and residents are reminded to take their time while driving in winter conditions. No consent given On Dec. 13 the RCMP in Golden had to deal with a “Take auto without consent” incident. A youth with a drivers licence took his/her parents’ car without getting permission from the parents. RCMP said this type of charge is in place to deal with a very specific type of incident. The car in this case has been recovered but there has been no decision made on whether charges will be laid. Threats through Facebook There was a report of someone uttering threats through Facebook. RCMP were contacted when comments were made which were considered a form of cyber bullying. RCMP said people need to realize that making a threat through Facebook, whether it is a joke or not, is not permitted. They added that people have also been charged in the past for uttering threats through texting or emails.

Safe Christmas journeys RCMP would like to remind people who are planning on travelling in the Christmas season to take their time on their trips. They suggest people should give themselves extra time to get to their destination and use Drive BC and see where the roads are closed.

Water metering assessment presented to Golden council Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net As part of the Columbia Basin Trust’s Water Smart Initiative, Golden council has just been presented the findings of a Water Meter Needs Assessment that was commissioned in June, 2012. “In 2009 the Columbia Basin Trust started an initiative called the Water Smart Initiative, it’s a fiveyear program. It has a policy directive for member communities to reduce their consumption by 20 per cent in five years,” said Chris Cochran, manager of operations for the Town of Golden. Since then Golden has reduced its consumption by 21 per cent. John Dumbrell, a senior planner with

Urban Systems, presented the findings of the assessment. Golden has already taken steps to reduce consumption, including water metering in the industrial, commercial, institutional and multi-family residences, outdoor irrigation restrictions, leak detection, and public awareness and education. But based on data collected from other B.C. communities who have recently undergone universal water metering, the town can expect another 20 per cent reduction on peak water use, and a 15 per cent reduction on average use. “What it would be is installation of water meters on all water service connections that are not currently metered. So the bulk of them, practically all

of them, will be single family residences,” said Dumbrell. Golden would require 1,378 water meters (at $600 a piece), which the town would own. After the cost of installation and upgraded software and a reading system, the projected capital cost would be $964,000. In addition to that, the town would be providing additional operational costs, which Dumbrell valued at the equivalent of a 1/4 staff position, or $20,000. The project would save the town energy costs for pumping water and waste water, which, based on data from other communities, is projected to be 20 per cent in water system energy costs, and 15 per cent in sanitary and sewer energy costs.

“From a social perspective, there will be an equity and fairness regarding charges to utility customers,” said Dumbrell. People will pay for what they consume, and will also have the ability to affect their own water bill. The assessment was just completed, and the issue of universal water metering is not currently on the town agenda.

Behind the Wheel Bad Manners at the Stop Sign

Mirror, signal left, brake and stop before the marked stop line. Look left, look right and the vehicle that was following me stops on my right, half on and half off the roadway, making his right turn. Of course, I can’t see cross traffic to my right properly, so he gets to go before I do. I’ll bet that he was completely oblivious to both his bad manners and the traffic rule he failed to heed. Passing on the right is generally forbidden in BC and having to travel off of the roadway to do it is one of those instances. No matter in this case that the gravel shoulder is smooth and available to drive on it is still not acceptable driving practice. The white line that defines the right edge of the roadway at this intersection has been almost totally worn away by drivers who have preceded this man. There is almost no doubt in my mind that if this man was waiting in a lineup for his turn and I walked past and inserted myself in front of him I would be in for at least a dirty look, if not some verbal protest. That situation is really no different from the one at the stop sign. He took a turn that was not his to take and caused inconvenience to others. That is bad manners in my view, and probably yours too. If anyone from Royal Canin Canada is reading this, the man is a bad advertisement for your company. You may wish to ask him to be a better representative of your company or remove the advertising from the outside of his vehicle. I might not be able to speak to him directly about his behaviour, but there are other ways of getting the point across that don’t provoke road rage. Don’t drink and drive

Travel planner released by Golden Tourism

The spirit of the season takes on a whole different meaning for some people. It is not just about being happy and spending time with friends and family. For some people the spirit of the season comes in a glass, can, bottle, or even a red solo cup. There is nothing wrong with people gathering to have a drink or two, or - My Way even a few more, with their friends and family during By Darryl Crane the holidays. To say an alcoholic beverage had never touched my lips would be a horrible lie. But all too often people make stupid and tragic decisions that lead to, not only the season being ruined, but also many lives as well. Once again this year the word has to be spread that drinking and driving is without a doubt one of the most ridiculous things people do. There is no excuse for doing it. For years, the importance of not getting behind the wheel and turning your vehicle into an accident waiting to happen, has been stressed on every form of media and social media imaginable. As a child watching television I remember seeing commercials with squealing tires and a voice telling me not to drink and drive. But sadly there are still people who jump in their cars after a night on the town and think they can make it home. These people are playing Russian roulette with lives. We are lucky in Golden that many people in town live within walking distance of a pub or a friend’s house, so walking home, preferably not hooting too loud, is not that difficult, even in winter. But even if you are not within walking distance, planning ahead can keep you out of the hospital, jail or a cemetery. If you are at a house party and have a few drinks too many then just find a couch and take a nap. An even better idea is to make sure you have a designated driver so people who must get home can do so safely. Sure, shuttling your friends and co-workers home in a jollier-than-normal state may not seem like fun. But, it is nice to be the one person who remembers the whole night, and can then remind them the next day that they really were not dancing Gangnam Style nearly as well as they thought they were. Another way to get home is by taxi. Some people have told me this can be a challenge in Golden due to the limited numbers of cabs available on busier nights. If you know it is going to take two hours for a taxi to show up, then call two hours before you want to leave. Once again not being able to get a taxi is not an excuse to hop in your car drive home drunk. I hope this Christmas season I do not have to write about people losing their cars in police stops, or even worse, having to tell the tale of a tragic accident because one bad decision was made. I hope everyone has a safe, enjoyable Christmas season where people make the right choices. It may be a nuisance getting home in a taxi, walking, or volunteering to stay sober during some fun loving Christmas bash. However, the other option is one where lives are destroyed on a tragic basis.

Additionally there are listings for local accommodations, restaurants and retailers plus information on some of the community facilities such as the Gushers spray park, pump track and skate park. Sweeting said, “We added an additional eight pages for this edition of the Golden Travel Planner in order to better showcase Golden and Kicking Horse Country. New sections include suggested winter and summer itineraries to assist people in planning their ideal vacation, and to encourage a longer stay in the area. “We have also added more pages to focus on Golden as a destination for weddings and honeymoons. Tourism Golden is proud to issue the 2013 Golden Travel Planner this week. Residents of Golden, either new or long-time, may think that the Golden Travel Planner is for tourists and visitors only. However Joanne Sweeting, marketing manager for Tourism Golden, said “This in an informational and visually pleasing piece which can be used by everyone, whether they have lived in Golden for many years, just arrived in town and needing to get to know the area, or visiting or planning for a vacation in Golden and Kicking Horse Country.” In your exclusive copy included in the Golden Star you will find not only useful information on the many outdoor activities that we have the area throughout the year, but also history and infor-

between three rivers, two mountain ranges, and close to six national and provincial parks that I believe Golden should be recognized as a wedding or honeymoon destination. “Locals and out of town wedding planners alike can find useful information on places of worship, marriage commissioners, venues, photographers and much more for planning their nuptials. ” She added that with the organisations’ fiveyear renewal to operate as the destination marketing organisation (DMO) for Golden and Kicking Horse Country they felt a need to refresh and update the look and feel of the Golden Travel Planner, whilst still retaining the essence of the brand which aims to promote the authenticity and community spirit of Golden. “We’ve added lots more and much larger

images to provide a visual representation of our unique attractions. Most of the images come from a project to upgrade our dated image library and were taken by local photographer Dave Best of Best Impressions. We love the new look and hope that locals and visitors do too,” said Sweeting. Apart from distribution in the local area, the Golden Travel Planner is distributed throughout BC in Visitor Information Centres, along the Bow Valley in accommodations and tourist outlets, inserted into key newspaper publications in Calgary and Edmonton, at consumer shows attended by Tourism Golden, as well as being mailed all over the world in response to online requests. A digital copy of the Golden Travel Planner is also available to view or download online at www. tourismgolden.com

A heart felt thank you from the Golden Food Bank At this magical time of year, the Golden Food Bank gives thanks for the generosity of our community. We are continually amazed by the community spirit demonstrated by individuals, businesses and organizations that support the Food Bank throughout the year through donations and fundraisers. Without this support the Food Bank would not be able to provide food to those in need in our community. The Golden Food Bank provides food hampers to 125 homes in our community every month – this represents about four per cent of the population in Golden and surrounding area. About half of our clients are families, of which school

aged children represent 30 per cent of our clientele. Seniors over the age of 55 represent 12 per cent of those using the Food Bank. Twenty-five per cent of clientele are employed, 27 per cent live on disability, 20 per cent live on social assistance and 10 per cent are on EI. The impact of the economy and a changing work environment make it challenging for many to find meaningful, fulfilling work. Many families rely on support from the Food Bank to make ends meet. Highlights from 2012 include: Our Annual Food Drive in May raised $14,000 in food donations.

Our Pennies from Heaven Campaign raised $3,500 for the Food Bank. The Ruth Wixon Community Garden grew 360kg of fresh produce for food hampers. The Kraft Food for Families Campaign raised $850 for the Golden Food Bank. A special thank you to the amazing volunteers that ensure food is available to clients every week. A core group of 20 volunteers donate 200 plus hours of their time monthly! You are extraordinary!! Many blessings to all of you this Holiday Season, may peace and joy fill your hearts throughout 2013.

On behalf of myself and our Board of Directors, thank you. Barb Davies Director Golden Food Bank

Clarification In the Dec. 12 issue of the Golden Star it was reported that the Golden Area Initiatives Budget was $397,041. Although this number is correct, the article did not mention that $120,000 of that budget goes to Kicking Horse Culture, and GAI is simply a flow through.

Christmas Greetings – David Wilks, Member of Parliament As we approach the holiday season, I reflect back on the past year as your Member of Parliament and the learning curve that comes with federal politics. We as Canadians are blessed to live in one of the best countries in the world. We are able to say that we can travel freely from coast to coast to coast and enjoy the abundance that Canada has to offer. We can share in the natural beauty that Canada has

to offer. The splendour of our country ranges from the west coast and its awesome sunsets, through the Rocky Mountains, across the wheat fields of the prairies to the great lakes , and then onward to the St. Lawrence seaway and scenery of the east coast. We can be proud that we live in a country where we recognize two official languages and that our history reflects the importance of working together in both languages. I can say that although pol-

iticians may not always agree on issues that affect Canadians, they all have the best interests of Canadians at heart. Having said that, we live in a country where everyone has the right to their opinion and can voice their concerns without persecution. Canada continues to be a melting pot country, by which we have many cultures who now call Canada their home. We are proud to boast such

a multi-cultural society which shows the world that we can live, work and learn from each other’s culture. I am honoured to be your Member of Parliament, to listen to your concerns and bring them forward and have them discussed in our nation’s capital. From my family to yours, I wish you a very joyous holiday season and Happy New Year. May you be blessed with good health and prosperity in 2013.

Golden Moments: A homestead that brought a family closer together Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net Deloris Frederick moved to the Golden area 72 years ago and she has lived in, or near the town ever since. Frederick explained that her father came to Canada from Sweden and eventually settled on a 160-acre homestead in the Blaeberry where her family would spend many years. “There were four siblings in the family and only four and a half years between us from the youngest to oldest,” she said. Being the oldest child, Frederick explained she had a great deal of responsibilities. “I just wish my children could have grown up in the same environment I did because I think we learned a lot,” she said. The farm had no running water or electricity and as a child Frederick would sometimes have to walk three miles to get to school. “Sometimes in the winter we would walk and other times mom would take us to school on the horse and sleigh,” she said. “There was also the Doyle family who lived near us. One of the boys was five years older than me and he had a bike. Sometimes he would come to our place and put my brother and I on his bike with him. We would all ride down the hills together and then get off to walk up the next hill.” No having electric lights in those days meant sometimes when she would get off the bus after a day at school her

house would be dark. “When we would get off the bus and you would look down at the farmhouse and there were no lights on I just felt ill. It was like there was something wrong. It was a weird feeling,” she said Today Frederick admitted she still does not like coming home to a dark house. Being in the Blaeberry meant that her mom and dad would only go to town once every two weeks and sometimes the children would not go on the trip. “We had a lot of chickens and there were a lot of coyotes. Someone would have to stay and watch the chickens. Usually I got that job. I had a 22 (caliber rifle) and we all knew how to use it. It was just better to scare the coyotes away from the chickens. You would fire at them and hope you would hit them so dad would be proud of you,” she said. Frederick said she still has her hunting and fishing license today but was also a pretty good shot back in the day. “I used to win a lot at the turkey shoots against the women,” she said. One of the fun trips that Frederick would take when she was growing up was on the train to Calgary to see her grandmother or do some shopping. “That was a big thing to get on a train. The old Queen’s Hotel was here and my dad would bring my mom and I into town to stay at the hotel. We would then catch the 4:30 train in the morning which would get us into Calgary around 9 a.m. After being on the farm it was nice to get away.” She added that on another trip to Cal-

gary with a friend of hers from town, they met another person from Golden while shopping in the city which led to a fun night out. “The guy was from the Blaeberry and he lived up the road from us. He was a Greyhound bus driver and he invited us to a dance that night. We said no because we had to catch the 11 o’clock train because we both had to work in the morning,” she said. “But they said they would get us back to the train so we ended up going out to Ogden and then got on the train at 11 p.m. We got back into town just in time to go home and change our clothes before heading off to work.” Frederick explained, that at the age of 16, it didn’t matter how tired you were because back in those days that was just the way it was and you went to work. Another thing which she remembers about Golden which comes back to her in winter is the smell that coal used to make in the air. “You would get up in the morning when it was really cold and you would smell the coal. I can still think at times I can smell that coal smoke. It is a smell you would never forget.” Golden has changed a great deal over the years and Frederick does miss some of the past which is no longer here. “It has changed a lot. I hate to see some of these old buildings go. Like the old Queen’s Hotel. It seems a shame to see them go and I wish they could have restored some of them,” she said. “I think you grow with the changes. It is like watching a child grow up. You do

Town requests Economic Opportunity Funds for Civic Centre kitchen ary. And we need matching funds," said Benty. "We have not spent any economic opportunity funds. I don't have the exact amount that's left in that fund… but we haven't spent any of it." Council agreed to make the request given that there is limited time left before the $60,000 from the CBT is taken back, and that no local property tax dollars would be put toward the project.

A delicious show at Taps Wil Mimnaugh at the Rockwater Golden Star Staff reporter@thegoldenstar.net It may or may not be the end of the world, but Golden Delicious want to make sure you celebrate either way. On Dec. 21 they will be hosting a Doomsday Party at the Golden Taps with special performances by Vinyl Ritchie and The Gaff. Known for his hear religious obsession with vinyl-only sets, Scott Arkwell, a.k.a. Vinyl Ritchie, is one of Canada’s original eclectic electronic music DJs. In the early days of Vancouver’s embryonic early 90s rave scene, he made a name for himself as an inventive mash-up artist, long before the hipsters and ableton/serato remixers started hybridizing electronica. A consistent party rocker for more than two decades, a Shambhala fractal forest favourite, beach stage staple, and globally sought out DJ, Vinyl Ritchie is a guaranteed good time. The Gaff, a fellow party rocker, infuses original break beats, funk, soul, afro, Latin, Brazilian, and other world flavours with modern day club, hip hop, electronic, and dance music. The Gaff is often referred to as a DJ’s DJ, cited as a persona favourite amongst some of the world’s best DJs. Born in Washington D.C. in 1977, Gaff was raised in Victoria and honed

Golden Delicious will be holding a Doomsday Party at the Golden Taps with performances by Vinyl Ritchie and The Gaff (pictured). Photo Submitted his skills throughout the late 90s. In 2010 his production rose to new heights, his tunes being played by world class DJs and shows around the globe, and featured on numerous mixtapes. It was also the year he was recognized at Saskatoon’s best DJ. He’s also had the pleasure of promoting and opening up for DJ Nu-Mark, Z-Trip, Fort Knox Five, Questlove, Scratch, and of course Vinyl Ritchie. Doors open for the Doomsday Party at 9 p.m., tickets at the door only.

The Rockwater Grill and Bar is filling the void in between Christmas and New Years with some great entertainment. Wil Mimnaugh will be performing on Saturday Dec. 29. By the age of 13 he was already seriously refining and defining his playing style, unknowingly blending his love of old school country with new divers punk and alternative influences. His two musically proficient parents handed that love down to him by playing and singing along to old crooners and guitar legends such as Johnny Cash, Chet Atkins, and Hank Williams. He released his first album, Both Hands, in 2002 and sold more that 6,000 copies off stage. That caught the attention of a booking agent, and the result was a touring schedule that allowed Mimnaugh to perform more than 300 shows in one year, and earned four nominations at the 2005 WCMA’s, including Producer and Entertainer of the Year. Mimnaugh’s sophomore album was released on a major label, and featured collaborations with some of Canada’s most respected musicians such as 54-40’s Neil Osborne and Broken Social Scene’s Jason Collett. In 2008 his track Big Life was featured in a pivotal hospital scene in the ABC TV series Eli Stone. And the

Wil Mimnaugh is set to play the Rockwater Grill and Bar. Photo Submitted following year he was featured in the award-winning documentary Music is the Message: Wil, which detailed Mimnaugh’s ongoing journey with music. “I feel very fortunate in that my music is starting to find its way through avenues such as television and film. I thoroughly enjoy the process of making the music into imagery - when I feel a strong connection to the visuals it is that much more enjoyable,” said Mimnaugh. Whether performing live, recording an album or writing for film, Mimnaugh is a dedicated and consummate professional. He uses his legendary live show performances to develop his expansive roots-rock sound to create a style that is honest, edgy, raw and delicate, yet achingly beautiful all at once. A safe holiday is a happy holiday Make safety a priority this holiday season with these simple tips: • Never kick or hit your meter if ice builds up. Call us for assistance at 1-888-224-2710. • After a snowfall, brush snow away from your meters by hand and clear a path for the safety of our meter readers. • Around your fireplace, consider using a hearth safety gate to help protect small children from the heated glass. of a ping-pong tournament that took place here. “There has sprung up all over the English-speaking portion of our globe a most sudden, and, to the ordinary observer, inexplicable craze for the game of ping-pong, which is explained by one writer as du tot the impossibility of an Englishman resisting the temptation to handle a round ball. This writer cites, in support of this theory, the success of Association football, cricket, golf, lacrosse, tennis and lastly, ping-pong. Golden has fallen into line and the tournament held this week served to show what a hold the new game has taken in the few short weeks since its introduction. When the draws were made on Monday there were 21 entries in the ladies singles, 44 in the mixed singles and 23 in the gentlemen’s singles. After playing for three afternoons and evenings there still remained two games to be played, which were left until Thursday evening when the tournament was brought to a successful close. During the prog-

ress of the game there were many surprises, and some who had been looked upon as invincible met defeat, while other who had not been taken into consideration by the knowing ones, developed unexpected strength. In the ladies singles, Mrs. Gibb, after playing a very close game against Mrs. Aylmer, was defeated by a very narrow margin by Miss Wells, who then won easily from Mrs. Griffith, and secured first place. Mrs. Gibb, though beaten, was congratulated by her friends on the splendid form she showed in her games with Mrs. Aylmer and Miss Wells. The game between Dr. Taylor and H.G. Parson, in the gentelmen’s singles, was a very keenly contested one, and was watched for nearly two hours by a large number. The final rally in this game was a very long one, the ball passed 97 times over the net. Mr. Parson is credited with having at this command more different “cuts” and “screws” than any other player in town, but the doctor played on the defensive and seldom failed to return the ball from the most difficult

positions. The game was not concluded until after midnight on Wednesday. On Thursday evening there remained only one game to be played – the final in the mixed singles between Dr. Taylor and Mr. T. O’Brien, which was watched with great interest and resulted in a victory for Mr. O’Brien, who thus got satisfaction for the defeat which he sustained at the doctor’s hands in the mixed singles, the score being 6-4, 5-6 and 6-1. The ladies very kindly provided tea and cake during the afternoon which was much appreciated by all present. The tournament netted a handsome sum for the funds of St. Paul’s church and was thoroughly enjoyed by all the ping-pongers, and has done much to excite interest in this fascinating game.” While the Golden Museum has no copies of this or any other ping-pong match in Golden but we do have many (over 5000) photos of interest to people of the area that we are printing for sale at reasonable prices. Come check out what we have, they make great gifts.

Golden Secondary School continued a tradition of gathering the top archery students from all of the classes and having a competitive round to determine a champion. The competition was a fun way to feature the learning that has taken place and with a trophy and bragging rights at stake, the competition was

fierce. This year’s champion in the Men’s division was Ryan Gale who shot a 62 out of a possible 70, and the Women’s division winner was Meghan Trotter with a score of 60. There many shooters who came close the top this year and congratulations to all of you for coming out. A hearty thank you to Roy Pagliaro for volunteering his time for two weeks in helping teach students archery techniques and shooting line safety.

Long week of hockey sees the Golden Rockets move into first place Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net It was a night to remember as the Golden Rockets moved into first place in the Eddie Mountain Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League with a 4-0 win against the Fernie Ghostriders. Fernie entered the game with a onepoint advantage on both the Rockets and the Kimberley Dynamiters. The Rockets held off the Ghostriders during the first 10 minutes of the game when the visitors were pressing hard to get the game’s first goal. The Rockets took advantage of a power play and opened the scoring with 4:42 left in the first period when Keith Wake netted his 14th goal of the season with a deflection off a Brad Orr point shot. The late goal seemed to inspire the Rockets who came out flying in the second period. The Rockets outshot the Ghostriders 25-8 in the second which saw them control the play and keep the puck deep in Fernie’s zone. Both James Price and Josh Jewell scored for the Rockets, who took a commanding three goal lead into the third period. Play tightened up again in the third, but the Rockets finally put the game out of reach when Carson George scored

his 11th goal of the campaign. Rockets goalie James Leonard earned the shutout with a 31-save performance. “You are playing a first place team and first place is on the line, and then you win 4-0. It was a pretty dominant performance from our stand point. I thought it was out best game of the year,” said Rockets Head Coach Ty Davidson. “I am just so proud of the boys.” The Rockets then hit the road for one of their toughest weekend trips of the season starting in Grand Forks. An unassisted goal from Connor Beauchemin, his fourth of the night, kept the Golden Rockets from heading into overtime with the Grand Forks Border Bruins. That goal, scored with less than two minutes left on the clock, gave the Rockets at 7-6 win. The Rockets started the game strong, scoring two goals in the first, only 16 seconds apart. The Bruins answered back with two of their own, but Golden was able to regain the lead before the end of the period at 0:47 with a goal from Josh Jewell. A span of two minutes in the second period saw the lead shift again when Grand Forks scored three goals, each about a minute apart. Keith Wake lessened the gap with an unassisted goal before the buzzer went off the second period, leaving the score at 5-4 for the Bruins heading into the third.

Golden Rockets players watch from the bench as Carson George flies down the wing against the Fernie Ghostriders. Darryl Crane/Star Photo Beauchemin scored three goals in the final frame, giving his team the two points, and keeping them in the top spot in the Eddie Mountain Division. Saturday night saw the Rockets face off against the Castlegar Rebels. After scoring three goals in the first period the Rockets gave up three in the second. The teams traded goals in the third which led to overtime. In a rarity, overtime did not settle anything and the Rockets walked away from the game

with a 5-5 tie. Beauchemin had another big night against the Rebels netting a hat trick. The weekend’s final game was a Sunday afternoon affair in Beaver Valley. Playing five games in six days seemed to finally catch up to the Rockets as the y were defeated 8-1 with Cole Henson in the net for the loss. At the end of the weekend, the Rockets were still in first place, two points up on Fernie.

A long wait come to an end for Rocket Carter Cochrane Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net Carter Cochrane is happy to be back on the ice after an injury slowed him down at the start of the year.

good so far. I have just come back from a shoulder injury and it is tough getting back into shape. But I am getting a feel for it now,” he said. The Rockets rook-

Safety comes first in the backcountry of BC Golden Star Staff reporter@thegoldenstar.net British Columbia is known for its beautiful backcountry, but it is important to remember to enjoy it in a safe and responsible manner. Every year approximately 14 people across Canada die in avalanches, and of those, about 65 per cent happen in B.C. “When there’s enough snow to ride, there’s enough snow to slide,” said Joe Lammers, a public avalanche forecaster with the Canadian Avalanche Centre (CAC). “We’re definitely into avalanche season and our bulletins are in full fling.” The provincial government is committed to ensuring that those who venture into B.C.’s backcountry understand the risks and take all the

necessary precautions. They recommend that anyone who plans to spend time in the backcountry take a recognized avalanche skills training course (offered through the Canadian Avalanche Centre). The CAC, head offices located in Revelstoke, is a non-government organization that provides up-to-date information on avalanche and snowpack conditions, as well as delivering avalanche safety programs, public avalanche awareness and education programs, and act as a central pointof-contact for avalanche information. Avalanche Skills Training (AST) courses are strongly encouraged for anyone going into the mountains. These courses offer both classroom and in-the-field training sessions that give outdoors enthusiasts the ability to recognize and avoid avalanche ter-

rain and effectively rescue a member of the group buried by an avalanche. The course goes over basics like ensuring you have the proper equipment (a shovel, transceiver and a probe), and knowing how to use it. Also watching for an increase in precipitation or a sudden rise in temperature, and avoiding having multiple people on the same run at the same time. “It covers everything from interpreting the bulletins and understanding the language used, to recognizing safe terrain,” said Lammers. “It has to be intuitive because under stressful situations you don’t want to be doing the stuff for the first time.” All of this information, including where to find local AST courses, can be found on the CAC website at www. avalanche.ca.

Columbia Basin Trust supports cycling club Golden Cycling Club Submitted This summer the Golden Cycling Club completed the acquisition of a number of hand and power tools to create a trails tool cache. Previously, a collection of aging tools had been used by the club for trail construction and maintenance, but by 2011 many of these tools were no longer usable. This situation was viewed as an opportunity to not just replace tools but to

also purchase tools specific to trail building. The club was able to combine its own experience with advice from the International Mountain Biking Association to generate a tool list that included both common place items and trail specific tools. Last spring the club applied to Columbia Basin Trust Community Initiatives and Affected Areas Program for $4,100 in funding. The application was successful and combined with the

club’s own funds they were able to establish a tool cache at a total cost of $4,481.55 All the tools were purchased locally and include everything from shovels and pulaskis to macleods and fire rakes. The club’s volunteers now have access to tools that make for safe and efficient trail building and maintenance. The new tool cache was first put to use this fall during two successful volunteer days. Plans are in place for a series of volun-

teer days next year that will focus on new trail construction. In 2013 the club will complete the final leg of the CBT Mainline loop and plans to develop a family oriented trail from the

new trail head off the Golf Course Road. The club continues to maintain over 60 kilometres of trails around Golden that attract hikers, runners and equestrians as well as cyclists.

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) is inviting residents of Electoral Areas ‘A’, ‘C’, ‘D’, and ‘E’, who wish to serve on their Community Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission, to complete and return an Expression of Interest Form. The Expression of Interest Form and related information is available on the CSRD website at www.csrd.bc.ca, or by contacting the Environment & Engineering Services Department as listed below. CSRD staff will review all submissions and will schedule meetings with all applicants beginning in January 2013. The Commission will assist the CSRD by ensuring it receives thoughtful and comprehensive advice from a representative group of individuals with local knowledge and interest in the parks and recreation needs of the community. Commissioners are required to meet a minimum of four times per year. Terms are two years in duration, concluding December 31, 2014. Individuals who best satisfy the following requirements will be recommended to the CSRD Board of Directors for appointment: • Interest, leadership and passion for enhancing public enjoyment of parks, trails and green spaces, as well as promoting local stewardship of recreational amenities. • Desire to share knowledge and experience in a range of subjects relevant to community parks and recreation planning, management and development (e.g. parks management and operation, recreational facilities and programming, construction and engineering, environment, youth, seniors, business, geography, education, arts and culture). Please submit a completed Expression of Interest Form by Friday, January 4, 2013 to: Environment & Engineering Services Community Parks and Recreation Columbia Shuswap Regional District Box 978, Salmon Arm, BC V1E 4P1 Phone: 250 833-5950 or Toll free: 1 888 248-2773 Fax: 250 832-1083 Email: worksservices@csrd.bc.ca

Special times at school Janne Arlt, Principal Nicholson Elementary ‘Tis the season for all kinds of special events. Bridget Dauphney from the Canadian Avalanche Centre in came to do presentations with each class about avalanche and winter safety. This is such an important program for our students to understand the risks and know what to do in emergencies. It helps equip them to enjoy our beautiful winters safely. Christmas festivities began on November 30 with our Annual Christmas Card and Letter Writing Day. We invited other family members to join us. Many Christmas messages were sent to friends and relatives, near and far. All classes have been doing Christmas crafts and jewelry making and the results are impressive. Our reading buddies took a break to paint some wooden ornaments together, provided by the PAC. All students also contributed to our ‘Christmas Wishes’ bulletin board, where wishes for others were expressed on snowflakes, stars, Christmas ornaments and a string of lights. Some examples: “I wish everyone has a good Christmas with their family.” (Stephan, Kdgn.) “I wish it would rain food in Africa.” (Walker, Gr. 5) “I wish my sister gets a puppy.” (Cayden, Gr. 1) “I wish that all children would be safe and feel safe.” (Marcus, Gr. 5) “I wish everyone has fun in the snow.” (Jack, Gr. 2) In the photo from left to right are senior planner Scott Beeching, planner Jan Thingsted, “My hope is for everyone to be happy.” (Makenna, Gr. 6) “I hope all your wishes come true.” (Zach, Gr. 6) waste management co-ordinator Carmen Fennell and David Byers, community co-ordinaTwo students enjoyed a trip on the CP Holiday Train from tor of the Salmon Arm, Salvation Army. Cool times found near the slopes at the Winston Lodge and Saloon Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net For its second season on the hill the Winston Lodge and Saloon is open for business. Kicking Horse Mountain Resort’s coolest night time hangout is bringing back some old favourites, and introducing a few new things as well. “The whole premise with the place is to have a story,” said owner Bill Braisher. “This place is named after my grandfather Winston Wolfenden. His father, Archie Wolfenden came to the valley in 1912 from England, and they opened the Brisco General Store.” On the other side of the family, Braisher’s great grandfather Alfred came to the area in 1909 and ran the stage coach in between Golden and Cranbrook. “My grandfather Winston would have been tickled pink to have this place named after him,” said Braisher. The Winston, which has little pieces of Golden and Columbia Valley history all over the walls, consists of the saloon, the lodge, the spa, as well as the conference centre. They offer people full resort experience, and also help visitors set up things like heli-skiing. They are being dubbed the resort within the resort. Since last season they have undergone some renovations, added a games room and the convention centre for things like weddings and Christmas parties. “Last winter was very busy, the summer was moderately busy, but of course things do slow down because it is a ski resort,” said Braisher. And already this year things have been busy. The saloon, known for it’s life size Jenga, mugs with bugs, and “shot in the pocket” shirts, has a few new features this year. “Anyone with a season’s pass, we deputize them, and they get 12 per cent off in the pub. It’s just a silver deputy badge that goes on their season’s pass. So you flash your badge and you get a discount,” said Braisher. Also new this year is their signature Nuclear Monster Bomb.

Bill Braisher and Tracy Fedor, above, sit in front of the fire at the Winston Lodge. Joni Young, below, stands with some of her art that was exhibited at the lodge during an open house on Dec. 14. Jessica Schwitek/Star Photo The new twist on the Jager Bomb (which uses Redbull), the Nuclear Monster Bomb has a shot of Jager dropped in a glass of Monster energy drink, and then it’s capped up with a drop of tonic water. The Monster and the tonic water glow in the bar’s black light, giving the drink a nuclear edge. The saloon is also filled with other board games, checker board tables, and cowboy hats hanging on the walls. “I go to the thrift stores every chance I get to buy more hats, and at the end of the night every one of these hats is on somebody’s head. And when they steal them I just go get more,” said Braisher. So if you’re a season’s pass holder, go on up to the Winston and get “deputized.” To see more about the lodge, go to www.winstonlodge.com.

Be a WINSTON Deputy. Season Pass holders come get your badge at the Saloon for great Discounts!
