Cardiac and Internal Medicine specialists at Heart Function Clinics located in Nanaimo, Campbell River and Victoria are listening to the heartbeats of patients who live in communities across Vancouver Island in real time with the addition of digital stethoscopes to existing telehealth technologies. “Island patients and their families are benefiting from the latest in medical technology,” said Oak Bay-Gordon Head MLA Ida Chong. “The application of TeleCardiology across Vancouver Island is the result of the hard work of the specialists and staff at VIHA.” The TeleCardiology program uses video conferencing telehealth technology and the digital stethoscope. This technology enables patients to remain in their communities and meet with their cardiac and internal medicine specialists who can listen to the heartbeat of patients remotely. TeleCardiology benefits patients by providing follow-up cardiac health care closer to home and without the stress or financial burden of long distance travel. “Telehealth breaks down the physical obstacles and long distances,” said Parksville-Qualicum MLA Ron Cantelon. “Video conferencing technology allows patients living in more rural or remote communities to be able to access specialized health care more easily.” B.C.’s health authorities partnered to purchase the digital stethoscopes to ensure that all TeleCardiology programs across the province have

compatible equipment. “TeleCardiology enhances the collaborative approach to delivering cardiac care to the patient,” said Dr. Elizabeth Swiggum, a Victoriabased cardiologist. “It is like having the patient sitting next to you.” Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) is the first health authority in BC to roll out the TeleCardiology program using the digital stethoscopes. “TeleCardiology is a wonderful program for heart patients who reside in Vancouver Island communities that are a significant distance from cardiac specialists located at our larger acute care facilities,” said Don Hubbard, VIHA Board Chair. “The addition of these digital stethoscopes allows cardiologists to provide heart patients with specialized followup cardiac care closer to their patients’ homes which in turn, improves their quality of life.” VIHA acquired the digital stethoscopes with funding provided by Canada Health Infoway, the federally funded organization investing in electronic health record systems with the provinces and territories. “Today’s announcement is about improving the patient experience by breaking down barriers to care,” said Richard Alvarez, President and CEO, Canada Health Infoway. “Many Canadians live great distances from the specialized care they need and telehealth can help to bridge the gap. In fact, investments in telehealth across Canada eliminated over 47 million kilometres of patient

travel in 2010 alone.” VIHA has made significant investments in telehealth and is recognized as a leader in delivering telehealth programs to support better health outcomes for our patients. Currently, 14 VIHA programs provide telehealth services in 17 communities at 41 different sites. Over 7,700 telehealth consults have taken place since the inception of the telehealth program in 2007. VIHA estimates that over two million kilometres of travel and close to a million kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions across Vancouver Island have been reduced since the inception of the telehealth program. What is TeleCardiology? TeleCardiology is one of 14 telehealth programs available at the Vancouver Island Health Authority. TeleCardiology uses live two-way video conferencing telehealth technology to connect heart patients living in rural and remote communities across Vancouver Island with cardiac and internal medicine specialists in Victoria, Nanaimo, and Campbell River. These specialists are able to provide followup consultations using a television screen, video camera, microphone and digital stethoscope that run over a secure VIHA network. Where is TeleCardiology available? TeleCardiology is currently available in Port McNeill, Port Cont. on Page 5

services and provide clinical support in remote/rural areas. Patients benefit by not having to endure the stress and financial costs associated with travelling long distances for treatment. What VIHA programs and services utilize telehealth?

How many heart patients will benefit from TeleCardiology? It is estimated that upwards of 300 followup patients a year could benefit from this initial roll out of the service. What is telehealth? Telehealth uses advanced information and communication technology to connect clinicians and patients over long distance. Telehealth programs enhance patient access to specialty

In addition to TeleCardiology, the following services are actively provided using telehealth: oncology, psychiatry, genetics, eating disorders, thoracic surgery, child and youth mental health, atrial fibrillation, renal, speech pathology, pediatrics and TeleHome monitoring (in-home monitoring for heart patients). telehealth? To date, 7,700 patient-physicians consultations have been initiated in over 17 communities across VIHA. By 2013, 2.7 million kilometres of patient travel across Vancouver Island will have been eliminated, amounting to the prevention of 750 tons of Green House Gas emissions. Do patients like using telehealth Services? Patient and provider satisfaction with VIHA’s telehealth program has been overwhelmingly positive, and the quantitative benefits for the health authority are beginning to emerge. Below are some of our patients’ comments: “Did not have to

travel to Victoria in the snow. Would have had to cancel appointment.” “I am having some vertigo/dizziness and the opportunity to have to NOT travel was significantly comforting. I would welcome this opportunity any time.” “The telehealth consult is a very good addition to our health. To travel to Victoria is 1) very expensive 2) reduces pollution & saves the specialist a lot of time.” How were the digital stethoscopes funded? BC’s health authorities partnered to select a standard digital stethoscope to ensure that all TeleCardiology programs across the province have compatible equipment.

VIHA is the first health authority in BC to roll out the TeleCardiology program using the digital stethoscopes. VIHA acquired 32 digital stethoscopes with 50 per cent of funding provided by Canada Health Infoway. The value of each digital stethoscope is approximately $450. Why is telehealth so important to Healthcare today? Telehealth aims to significantly impact some of the most challenging problems of our current healthcare system: access to care, cost effective delivery, and distribution of limited providers. Telehealth allows for improved access and improved health outcomes in cost effective ways.

Fishing 2X14 Corner with Don Daniels email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com Fishermen that are getting out on the water this time of year are prawning and going after winter springs. Steven Fyfe from Courtenay has been out fishing the Hump off Campbell River and some nice undersized springs have been hooked and released. Prawning can be very good this time of year at Marina Island, Hill Island, Francisco, Twin Islands. A number of anglers will be gearing up for Steel heading and heading out to the Gold River, Nimpkish and Quinsam River. The Oyster and Salmon Rivers will have Steelhead in about a month. In Campbell River the old guide shack used to be a flurry of activity for the local guides and fisherman, today its being used as storage Guide Shack - Campbell Rive r and the old railway launch is a thing of the past. Speaking of the 70’s Brylcreem was once used to put sparkle on buck tail flies and was quite effective especially in the south. Today wd40 has been used widely by guides and fisherman. This past year has been a great fishing year! A huge thank you to all my fishing buddies, local tackle shops who supplied fishing information and readers who have contacted me through the fishing corner. The highlight of my fishing year was being the host at the first fishing fun derby at Roberts Lake. Lorna Duncan will have another derby in 2013. The Fishing Corner wishes you and your family happy holidays and great fishing in the new year!!!

Inside a maroon, textured scrapbook, newspaper clippings, stories and photos of ribbon cuttings and cheque presentations displays a brief history of the Comox Valley Transition Society. What’s inside the scrapbook — which has been dusted off in celebration of the organization’s milestone — holds extra meaning this year, as the society is celebrating its 25th anniversary, while Lilli House, the shelter for women and their children escaping abusive relationships, turns 20. “We’ve learned a lot over the years,” said Anne Davis, program co-ordinator for the society. “We have a much better ability to support the diverse population.” Cont. on Page 7

sk the Dentist A Question: 3x3.5

I’ve recently been diagnosed with uncontrolled diabetes and my doctor suggested I see my dentist. Why? Answer: Diabetes affects many Canadians each year ~ it can lower your resistance to infection & can slow the healing process. The most common oral health problems associated with diabetes are tooth decay and periodontal (gum) disease which leads to tooth loss. Dr. Kevin Lathangue When diabetes is not controlled properly, high sugar levels in saliva may help bacteria thrive. Plaque that is not removed can eventually harden (calcify) into calculus. When calculus collects above the gumline, it cannot be removed by brushing. This can create conditions that lead to chronic inflammation and infection in the mouth. Periodontal disease often is linked to the control of diabetes. For example, patients with inadequate blood sugar control appear to develop periodontal disease more often and more severely, and they lose more teeth than do people who have good control of their diabetes. Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning once a day between your teeth with floss and seeing your dentist regularly for an exam will help you to maintain your overall health.

Thousands of women have come through Lilli House A change in government in 1992 made way for funding for safe homes and staffing, and with various federal and community partnerships, the society was able to create Lilli House, explained Heather Ney, executive director of CVTS. The facility has 11 beds for transitional living, and three beds for addiction recovery. “The need is great,” noted Ney. “We have women who are ready to leave, but they simply have nowhere to go.” Davis explained women who use the society and resources at Lilli House come from across the socioeconomic spectrum. “Many are from the middle class; they are those who are not able to have access to a home or bank accounts if they leave a relationship. They just can’t afford to rent,” she said. “Women’s options and their ability to secure affordable housing are

“We would love to have a piece of property and some resources to create a facility for single women and children,” she noted. “It could be available to a range of ages with different size units and be very child-friendly.” Prevention programs, such as the purple ribbon campaign and school visits help spread the core message, added Davis. “We know we’re not going to solve the problem, but we need people — especially men and boys — to speak out.” For more information on the Comox Valley Transition Society, visit www.cvts.ca or call 250-897-0511.

From Page 6 What began as a one-employee organization in a small office has grown to 40 employees in four worksites and the Too Good To Be Threw Thrift Shop in downtown Courtenay. “Literally thousands of women have come through Lilli House or through our wide range of other programs,” explained Davis. She said almost 2,000 children have come through Lilli House in the past 20 years, and many more through counselling programs. The nonprofit agency is committed to making a positive contribution to the lives of women and their children through programs which provide safety and security and the prevention of violence. She noted the CVTS began when a group of community members saw the need for women who needed a place to go to for women who have experienced abuse in relationships and for their children.

20 years of North Island success Black press PORT McNEILL — “Who are those guys?” That’s the question asked by Butch Cassidy to the Sundance Kid as they were fleeing from Sheriff Joe Lefors and his posse, in the 1969 movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. It’s also a question staff at Community Futures Mount Waddington (CFMW) hear on a regular basis. They are continually suprised when, despite CFMW’s 20-year history serving the North Island, people often ask, “who are you and what do you do?” Community Futures is part of a national economic development program, administered by Western Economic Diversification Canada that has

CFMW can point to a number of highly successful clients that have been faithful customers like Keltic Seafoods, Hardy Buoys Smoked Fish and Seto’s Wok and Grill, who have worked closely with the organization from start-up through expansion. “The loan from CFMW was unquestionably the most pivotal part of our financing to be

able to proceed with the acquisition,” said Mickey Flanagan, CEO of Keltic Seafoods Ltd. in Port Hardy. CFMW loans go to businesses in every corner of the region. More than 40 per cent of funds lent go to business start or expansion in Port Hardy. Another 35 per cent goes to Port McNeill. The remaining 25 per cent is spread throughout the region in Port Alice, Alert Bay, Sointula, Zeballos, Woss, Coal Harbour and more. Clients also reflect

a wide range of sectors in the North Island economy, from fishing and forestry to tourism, services and retail. CFMW offers a wealth of services for small businesses in the region. Whether you’re thinking of starting your own business or growing your current business, it can provide advice, resources, business training and coaching. If you’re an entrepreneur – or want to become one – its staff can help. Small business start-up and loans are the cornerstone of CFMW’s business, but it does other things as well. For example, it creates partnerships with the municipalities, the Regional District and First Nations to plan and implement community economic development projects throughout the region. Between 2009 and today more than $3 million has been funneled into local community economic development projects. Community Futures will continue to play a role in economic and business development in the Mt. Waddington region. Its doors are open. Mainstream plant awarded two stars Mainstream Canada first two-star BAP certified salmon farm company in BC Mainstream Canada is the the first salmon farming company in BC to achieve twostar Best Aquaculture Practices certification this week, after its Tofino processing plant was certified. Mainstream Canada has already achieved Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification from the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) for several farm sites. In 2011, Mainstream’s Brent

Island farm was the first salmon farm in the world to achieve BAP certification. Achieving BAP certification for Mainstream’s Pacific National Processing plant in Tofino means another first for Mainstream – with farm sites and now a processing plant certified, Mainstream is the first salmon farming company in BC to achieve twostar certification from GAA. “We are very proud of this achievement. It shows our commitment to leading the way in

sustainable aquaculture practices on our farms and in our processing facilities, said Fernando Villarroel, Mainstream Canada’s managing director. “This new processing plant certification shows we are committed to the highest standards in producing salmon for our customers that is fresh, food safe and nutritious. The Global Aquaculture Alliance’s Best Aquaculture Practices standards are dedicated to advancing environmentally and socially responsible

aquaculture. They are made to continuously improve over time and they are the result of an international sciencebased certification program. For more information on BAP, visit http://www. gaalliance.org/bap/. Mainstream Canada is one of the largest salmon farming companies in British Columbia, Canada. The company currently operates three farms near Campbell River, eight farms near Port McNeill and 14 farms near Tofino.
