Council considers electronic voting BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

TODAY'S WEATHER

Waiting until after midnight to get municipal election results could become a thing of the past if the Town of Creston adopts an electronic voting system, town council learned at the Dec. 11 regular meeting. Bhar Sihota, who is doing a local government management internship at Creston Town Hall, presented a report that indicates that other small municipalities, including Nelson and Castlegar, are already successfully using electronic systems. “These systems do not reduce lineups or waiting times,” he cautioned council. “The role of the machine is to electronically count the ballots and record the results, and it is not expected to make the act of voting quicker. “Although there are many different types of vote tabulation units, the process generally begins with the elector receiving a paper ballot with circles next to each candidate’s name or plebiscite question.” The ballot is placed in a “secrecy sleeve” after the voter’s choice is marked. Then, under supervision of an election official, the ballot is inserted into the machine. At no time does anyone but the voter see his selections. See VOTING, page 4

Donations bring merry Christmas to Manitoba BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

The children of Shamattawa, Man., have plenty to smile about again this Christmas, after nearly a ton of Creston apples and an assortment of gifts arrived earlier this month. “The children were thrilled,” said local organizer Muriel Buhr. “So thrilled that one classroom went trooping over to Shamattawa’s RCMP detachment with a thank you card for Cpl. Maria Russell that they made themselves.” “They had a youth bazaar scheduled for that evening and the apples were a big hit,” Russell wrote to Buhr. “The next day a teacher took her kids to the detachment with a gift for us. I explained to all the children that it was not the RCMP who gave the apples, but the lovely people in a faraway town! They made a nice drawing book with handwritten thank yous.” “Imagine that, being thrilled over an apple!” Buhr said. Not accepting credit for the donations has become something of a tradition for the donations project. Buhr is quick to pass on thanks to all the others involved and orchardist Ken Shukin shrugs off the donations and starts loading up pallets to deliver to others in need. “Shukin Orchards again donated to that community that doesn’t ask, but needs,” she said. “He also shipped another 1,000 pounds to Lynn Lake, Man. Shukin Orchards hears of need in communities and food banks all over Western Canada and tries

every year to meet the need of people from all walks of life.” Shamattawa is a First Nations community, where food and necessities must be flown in at great expense. “Imagine now,” Buhr said, “Christmas morning. In a town so far away geographically, we really cannot even picture it in our minds. A fly-in only town that some of the children have never been out of. Where there is no mall or restaurants, no theatre, no bank, no recreation centre, not much employment, no high school, no hospital, no doctor, and not much else but the love of their family, children will be waking up, just like ours.” Buhr said gifts and donations for the “Christmas by Creston” project, as it has been dubbed by Shamattawa RCMP, have been rolling in since last January. “Terrie Faulkner, a Kitchener resident, has been a driving force behind the project to ensure children, in the Creston Valley or halfway across the country, have a little something at Christmas time,” she said. It all started three years ago when a Shamattawa RCMP officer was visiting his father in Creston at Christmas time and spoke of the needs in the isolated community. “Maybe we started out to just give some of our harvest to those in need,” Buhr said. “Goodness knows we needed to remind ourselves that we should appreciate our orchardists, since they are among the reasons we consider ourselves lucky to live here. “That year, the project included sending a Christmas gift to each child in Shamattawa.

Now, in our third year, we continue to expand. Since January, gifts have been dropped off at the hospital (Buhr’s employer). Little by little, the pile of gifts grew. Local merchants keep us in mind — Mark’s Work Wearhouse, Creston Card and Stationery and others called us for pickup. Ryan, Joanne and Jo Jo at Extra Foods gave us a call that we could get a pallet of gifts for young children at prices we haven’t seen since the last millennium. Gleaners contributed all year long. Gifts came from all over. People from Kootenay Lake arrived with ‘a little something for a child in Shamattawa’. They came in

from Yahk, Kitchener, Erickson and Lister. George Loveseth of Oliver, B.C., heard about this endeavor when he was on a Caribbean cruise and sent 62 hand-knitted hats. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Riondel and Creston made beautiful blankets. “When season-end sales came on, people thought of Shamattawa. Toys, jewelry and makeup arrived. Barbies came in, and so did Lego, Nerf games and books. Echo Kerr donated handmade dressed teddy bears and Ed and Sylvia Turner went out of their way to find what size clothing was needed, then brought some in. Crestview ladies knitted and crocheted and wrapped Christmas gifts. The Beehive Quilters took us under their wings and included Shamattawa in their caring by making 30 quilts. “Area B contributed towards purchasing last minute gifts for the children. The children at Redeemer Lutheran Church Kids Korner (a program run by Betty Marzke) gave from their hearts. There are about 15 of them this year, ranging in age from three to 11 years old. Each year they collect and use their offering money to help someone who is their neighbour. This September, they decided to help the Shamattawa project. Along with their gift, they offer a prayer each week for the children in Shamattawa. How inspiring is that? “Sorting, packing and boxing to ready for shipping was a wonderful joint venture. Thanks to Lana, Terrie, Russell, Dustin, Joy,

Don, Signe and Ken Miller and so many others — it was a party. “Community spirit was lifted when, once again, we were offered the generous support from Arlene, Richard and Matt of Creston Parcel and from Jim O’Connor of Overland West Freight, Greg Ridsdale of Ridsdale Transport and Jim Sinclair of Gardewine North to truck three full skids weighing more than 2,800 pounds full of apples and gifts for the children of that community. Once again, our ground transportation companies became Santa Claus. We cannot fully express just how much their support means to both Creston and Shamattawa. They each took turns transporting our gifts over 2,000 kilometres to the airport in Thompson, Man., to be flown in by Perimeter Aviation. The RCMP detachment in Shamattawa will be Santa’s elves again, working on their own time to help distribute gifts to the children. “The kids were thrilled getting an apple from a town far away. Can you imagine the joy they will experience getting a Christmas gift? “The children in Shamattawa will wake up this Christmas morning just like ours will. They will run out to the living room and see if there is a gift just for them, just like ours will. And we will know that just as surely as we know there is a Santa for our children, he will be there for those children. “Merry Christmas and may the season bless each and every one of you.”

RCMP find drivers unaware of hit and runs BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

An unusual series of fender benders occurred in Creston last week, with three of the four being classified, at least technically, as hit and runs. In each case, RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said, it appears that the offending driver did not

seem aware that they had struck another vehicle. It is unlikely that hit and run charges will be laid, although in some cases a letter to the superintendent of motor vehicles could prompt a review of the driver’s licence.

Council supports childhood poverty reduction plan BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

It’s time for the provincial government to create a child poverty reduction plan, Rebecca Blair told Creston town council on Dec. 11. Blair, president of the Creston Valley Teachers’ Association, appeared at the regular council meeting to ask for support in pushing the child poverty issue. By the end of the meeting, she got more than she asked for. “Ask any teacher what it’s like to see students come to school hungry,” Blair said. “Ask councillor Gadicke (an elementary school teacher). She knows.” Blair said that teachers routinely bring food to their classrooms, that schools rely on breakfast and lunch programs, and that the work of food banks has helped the provincial government duck its responsibilities. “We are asking you to consider encouraging our provincial government to create a comprehensive and account-

able poverty plan to reduce poverty in our province,” she said. Presenting a document that outlines the reasons for teachers’ concerns, Blair pointed out that B.C. has had the worst child poverty of any province in Canada for seven consecutive years. More than 10 per cent, or 87,000, children live in poverty, based on Statistics Canada’s after-tax low-income cut-off standards, she said. While many children live with a single parent, Blair said even two-parent families struggle when one or both are working at or near minimum wage. “According to research, poor children are twice as likely as non-poor children to repeat a grade, be suspended from school or drop out,” Blair said. “They are 1.3 times as likely to have a developmental delay or learning disability and require special education services.” Investing government funds in reducing child poverty means significant savings down the road, she said. “I suspect the Liberals will introduce

Water agreement From page 1 The water services agreement came to a conclusion after former RDCK chair Gary Wright was brought into help bring the parties together when negotiations fell apart earlier this year. The contract will see the Town of Creston pay a 60 per cent share of the operations and maintenance of the Arrow Creek water system, which includes the water treatment plant. It extends through 2017. In the agreement, the RDCK agrees to install “district meters” to measure water flow in all lateral lines. In part, the meters will help determine the amount of water loss in the nearly 100-year-old sections of the system’s main line. They will also help determine more accurately the total water consumption by Erickson water users. Data collected from the meters will be used to calculate the cost apportionment in 2016 and 2017. Wright’s work on the service review will continue in 2013 as he collaborates with directors from the Town of Creston and RDCK areas A and B to resolve governance issues. Area B director John Kettle said on Monday that the fire services agreement presented last week, in which Creston Fire Rescue would continue to provide fire protection for Erickson properties, wasn’t ready for signing. “We only saw the town’s contract the day before the meeting and it isn’t the final version,” he said. Because it is a legal issue, it was referred by the RDCK board to an in-camera discussion, which cannot be released to the public. Kettle said he remains committed to going to referendum to ask other Area B residents, including Arrow Creek and Kitchener, which don’t have government fire protection, if they want to be included in the fire service area. If they vote in favour, he said, the option will

a child poverty strategy during the spring election campaign,” she said, arguing that the issue should not be politicized. “I am asking you to help move awareness forward.” Coun. Wesly Graham said that he had participated in a Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) pilot program that is being tested in several communities around the province. Blair said the time for studies and pilots is long passed and that a province-wide strategy is needed. Coun. Judy Gadicke thanked Blair for bringing the issue before council and made a motion to write a letter of support to the appropriate ministry. After discussion that included all councilors, the motion passed. A second motion, to direct staff to begin work on a draft resolution to be put forward to the UBCM, also passed unanimously. Blair presented council with a sheaf of petitions signed by teachers, parents and others at schools in the Creston Valley before she left.

be to create a fire department that covers all of Area B, including Canyon-Lister, or to negotiate extended area coverage by Creston Fire Rescue. The first option, he said, can only

be pursued if enough new volunteer firefighters can be added from Area B. It takes three to five years to fully train a volunteer firefighter, Creston fire chief Bruce Mabin told town council last week.

Wishing you all the peace, joy, and love of the season!

In recent years our community’s major Christmas concert has been what I consider my personal kickoff to the holiday season. I don’t like hearing carols before December (or after Christmas day) and I dislike seeing Christmas displays that expand the season for longer than a month. Enough already, too much of a good thing, I say. But when I walk out of what has now become the Singing in the Christmas Trees concert, I’m ready for the season. We attended the Friday evening performance of Singing in the Christmas Trees and it was, by any standards, an outstanding event. Many years ago I wrote a column that, only partly in jest, talked about my gratitude for the incredible amount of work people in this community go to entertain me. That Friday night was a perfect example. I counted the names of about 120 singers (though there was some overlap in the various groups), 17 musicians and dozens more volunteers in other capacities. Astonishing. The coolest thing was that in the entire program there wasn’t a single piece that I didn’t find completely engaging. The variety of music and the quality of their presentation was quite wonderful. And then, at the end of the program, when singers packed the stage to sing one of my favourite pieces, Handel’s Hallelujah chorus, I had the same reaction I hear every time it is performed well. Shivers ran up and down my spine and tears came to my eyes. A beautiful piece of music, performed beautifully. What a way to kick off my Christmas season.

Of course there are many other worthy holiday performances going on at this time and one of my favourites happened last Friday, when I witnessed the site of 900

Complex offers swimming basics

I came across an interesting article in an athletic publication from down south that covered the outcry raised by a student at a college where there was a graduation requirement to be able to paddle a few lengths of the swimming pool. It turns out that this was quite common as a final task to obtain your diploma or degree (some variation of being able to swim and tread water), but appears to be on the decline. Some of the colleges that still uphold the requirement believe that anything which prevents people from dying needlessly is a valuable life skill and will continue to keep the requirement as long as possible. The tests we’re talking about here aren’t hard to pass. The student that approached the national media with her aquatic plight would receive her diploma if only she would swim 75 yards in the university’s pool, which would be approximately three lengths in our pool and without any time limits, so she can take all day if she wants. The tests at MIT and Notre Dame are a bit tougher; students there must swim 100 yards (four lengths), with no time restriction and expectant grads at Bryn Mawr College have to swim nonstop for 10 minutes, float on their

ing strategies in methods of bringing water safety awareness to school age children. Hey, we certainly feel it’s important, partly because of our proximity to lakes, streams and rivers, but mostly because it really is a life skill you carry with you forever. While you might not ever need to draw upon your abilities to swim your way out of a situation, what about when you get the chance to assist someone who can’t? You can see the progress Neil Ostafichuk in a small child during a swim lesson set; from getting things were achieved: reduced in the water, to bringing their face drowning rates, because people who close or on the water to ducking are more confident in water are less underwater to retrieve a toy — all in prone to drowning; reduced health the space of days. Parade awes spectators To the Editor: First, a big thank you to the Advance for making it easy to know when and where all Santa Claus Parade happenings were to be for our pleasure. Even the weather co-operated for us! Second, to all who took time and planned such an event. Third, for the magic parade and all who took time together to make all the first-time seers of a parade, children around two years old, and seniors alike who were filled with awe, a big thank you. I saw the parade through the eyes of a wee person. Her daddy wanted her to have fun first catching candy and smiling for everyone, but that lasted until the moving lights caught her attention and Daddy was forgotten, left to pick up some candy himself. Her first look was a little fear maybe, but the big police car looked so bright, and with people and children’s laughter, she relaxed. Then came the fire engines, then in time there was pure delight at the floats — so lovely and no long waits. Boys and girls were laughing and waving and calling out. At a very tall stiff-legged man, she backed up a little, and then forgot again. Even seniors in their “ride ons” were just as awed and clapped and stopped eating their hotdogs and cake. I was so happy that everyone on the

floats was happy. It took the onlookers as well to make the parade a magic hour they will never forget. For me, who on Dec. 1, 2009, lost my heartbeat and never came to awareness for 20 hours, this parade touched my heart and I know how fortunate I am to have another chance and appreciate what love went into this day, and to see through a child’s eyes the magic God of love has given us all. and I started looking at some of the expense items and noticed “Indemnities – Chairman and Directors” was $519,879. I then went further into the finance statement and found that in 2011 the line item “Legislative – directors’ expenses” was $846,880, which means they had at least $300,000 of personal expenses. I checked with the RDCK and was again shocked at the stipends they receive. I only checked the stipends of the electoral area directors, who receive a yearly stipend of $31,000. The vicechair receives an additional $6,000 and the chair an additional $30,288. Travel expenses are all paid as submitted, with $0.57/km for mileage. Municipal directors receive a smaller stipend as they are council members and receive a municipal stipend. One-third of the stipends are paid tax-free for undocumented expenses incidental to the discharge of their duties. For the chair, this could mean a total income of $61,288, with about $20,500 tax free if they were an electoral area director. In the Regional District of East Kootenay, the electoral area directors receive $17,383 and the chair receives an additional $15,000. The RDEK directors also get paid $175 for each board meeting and $90 for each committee meeting they attend. I think there needs to be an investigation by the provincial government into how much regional district boards in this province can milk out of what appears to be a cash cow for them personally. Chuck Truscott Creston

Regional directors are overpaid To the Editor: (Re: “Town weighing cemetery options”, Nov. 22 Advance, page 1) I noted that John Kettle had made suggestions on reducing the cost of cemetery maintenance, and I remembered he had run for regional district director because he mentioned to me at that time he was concerned the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) was costing more than other Kootenay regional districts were. I thought I would do some research and see if that was still true or if he had made a difference in its spending. I was shocked with what I found. The financial statements were online

Volunteers help others keep reading

Ann Cameron has spent her entire life in the company of books. “I loved reading as a little girl and I haven’t stopped yet!” she says. “When you’ve got a book, you’re never lonely.” These days, it’s hard for Ann to get to the library, and so she gets her books delivered to her through the library’s outreach program. “Sometimes I just stiffen up like an old board,” Ann says. ‘This program is so wonderful.” I had the privilege of meeting Ann while on a ride-along with Wendi Lengyell, one of the library’s outreach volunteers. For the past two years, Wendi has been delivering books to Ann and other clients, often taking the time to chat a bit with each one. “It’s really rewarding getting to know the seniors,” she remarks while pulling out of the library parking lot. “I realized that I might be the only person that they see all day, so it’s nice to be able give them a bit of company as well as deliver books”. Wendi was herself an outreach client while under bed rest during a difficult pregnancy. “Every three weeks, [current staff member] Pat would drop off books for me. It was so boring just lying in bed. The books were a lifesaver for me.” After recovering and starting up her own business, she had time to volunteer herself.

In the past year, BC NDP Leader Adrian Dix has called on the government to start both of these initiatives. The 1990s Buy BC program was a huge success. Today, Ontario and 32 other states and provinces are buying local for their schools and hospitals. We know we can do it here in B.C., so let’s get started. The Christmas season is here. Christians think of the birth of Jesus. Shopkeepers go into overdrive hoping to attract buyers. And the rest of the world enjoys a break thanks to Jesus’ birth. But Jesus was not born on Christmas day! The Bible does not tell us when He was born, but only the events around His birth. Looking at the genealogy of Jesus as given in Matthew and Luke we see that His ancestors included offspring from an incestuous relationship, an adulterer, a

Having said that, let me assure you that Jesus is the only person who ever lived who did not sin, and yet He was made to be sin for us. Jesus came to this world as Immanuel — God with us. And Joseph was told to name his son Jesus for He will save people from their sins. See JESUS’, page 9

Not all Christmas wishes the same our terms). In other words, we tend to work with what we interpret in another as unhappiness instead of perhaps considering it a process of healing they are going through. It becomes a balancing act of acceptance and support combined with com-

passion and love. It means we can’t always give or do for another what we think or see is best for them. I believe we have each chosen a path or purpose in life, and we need to accept that there are many ways of walking along this path. We often take wrong roads and have difficulty finding our way back. Sometimes we get lost and don’t want to accept that there may be an easier route. As a friend or relative, we can only support our loved ones and friends, and offer a helping hand, suggestion or plant an idea. It is difficult to watch someone going down the “wrong” path, “losing out” on life opportunities,

throwing away their education or talents, and sinking into depression, loneliness or poverty, or even crime. The worst thing we can do is to make them feel worthless, wrong and not respected. There may be times when we cannot support them, and we reluctantly have to detach from the relationship altogether and leave them to work thing out in their own way, or not. We all like to believe we are in control of our lives, and even though we may be fading physically, are forgetful or even bedridden, that essence, so much a part of our core identity, may still be our driving force. As world renowned psychiatrist Viktor Frankl noted while in the concentration camps in Nazi Germany, once we lose our core identity, we die. We all know those for whom Christmas brings up many sad or terrifying feelings. How we wish we could wipe out all their bad memories. So this Christmas, let us be aware of supportingly and lovingly respecting the wishes of close relatives and friends if they choose to spend a quiet time away from the lively, boisterous celebration we enjoy. Maybe they might like to spend just a part of the day with us or find pleasure in a quiet, more intimate tea with grandchildren or children just after Christmas. Christine Munkerud is a volunteer with the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors.

And if that isn’t crazy enough, Jesus — this perfect, amazing, compassionate God-man — willingly gave himself up to the powers of death and evil, so that he could destroy them and bring healing to his broken creation. Jesus came to Earth in order to give himself up for us, for the sake of all creation. Can you imagine a more ultimate gift? All our giving points to this unsurpassing gift of Jesus, reminding us of his crazy love and calling us to follow his example. It’s Jesus who said that the greatest love we can show for others is by laying down our lives for them. At Christmas, we celebrate this greatest love by celebrating Jesus, the one who became one of us so we could become one of his. And we follow him in the giving of ourselves to others. May your festivities this Christmas be in celebration of ultimate giving, both of yourself to others, and of God to us. Merry Christmas! Christmas is a time when we are thinking of lonely or sick friends and relatives and how we can brighten their festive season. We can’t imagine how they would get through Christmas without being surrounded with all the gaiety and noise that often accompanies such a festive occasion. Such noise and bustle may not be what that person has in mind. They may need the peace and quiet of remembering past Christmases with their own family rituals, special moments when a grandchild played the piano or just said something that touched them deeply, which they like to hold within their heart and allow to warm their loneliness. We are all so different, and we all have a different “essence” or identity that makes us unique, special beings. We seldom know what really makes another’s essence. It isn’t something we talk about. In fact, we may not come to terms with that essence ourselves until, or unless, we are in a highly stressful situation. It is that essence that forms our integrity, our moral character, keeps us going through rough times and helps us rise out of the ashes of despair, poverty or remorse, and go on to lead a more meaningful existence in our own terms. For those of us who are “rescuers”, we can’t bear to see someone in what we regard as pain; we want to remove all the thorns to make them happy (in

Jesus’ birth

From page 8 Jesus’ birth was prophesied in Isaiah 9:6, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, … And he will be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Jesus is the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. He is the Creator of all. Through the ministrations of the godhead, He is the one who was “incarnated” as the babe of Bethlehem. He came to this world of sin to show us how we too can live a pure life. He had no earthly father, He was conceived by the Holy Spirit. And filled with the Holy Spirit, He lived a sin free life. “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Yes, it is possible to be in such a close relation-

g

ship with God that we will not transgress God’s law — which defines sin.” (John 13:15) God does not have grandchildren. You are either a child of God or you are lost in your sins. The good news of the gospel is that Jesus came to save people from their sins. Thus, all, including adulterers, murders and all those who choose, can enjoy eternity in God’s kingdom. “Ample provisions have been made for all who sincerely, earnestly, and thoughtfully set about the work of perfecting holiness in the fear of God. ... None are so low, so corrupt and vile, that they cannot find in Jesus, who died for them, strength, purity, and righteousness, if they will put away their sins, cease their course of iniquity, and turn with full purpose of heart to the living God. He is waiting to ... put upon them the white, bright robes of

righteousness; and He bids them live and not die. ... If they abide in Him, they can ... be imbued with His Spirit, walk even as He walked, overcome as He overcame, and be exalted to His own right hand.” (Our Father Cares, pages 319, 320.) Jesus came as the Babe of Bethlehem, lived a perfect, sin-free life to pay the penalty for sin and to redeem all who choose Him as their Saviour and Lord. The Apostle Paul wrote to his protégée, Timothy, “I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.” (1 Timothy 1:16-17) Ian Cotton is the retired pastor of the Creston Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Creston and District Credit Union administrative assistant Winona Morris presented Tom Greentree of the Creston Ministerial Association with $2,900 for the Christmas hamper fund. The contribution included $1,200, matched by the credit union, which was raised by the staff at its popular annual bake sale. The additional $500 came from CRI Canada, which gave the credit union $500 to donate to a charity of its choice. LKB beats town in food bank challenge BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

A good-natured competition led to a few laughs, and a big score for the Creston Valley Gleaners Society food bank last week. When Lower Kootenay Band Chief Jason Louie challenged Creston Mayor Ron Toyota last

month to collect goods for the food bank, neither knew just what to expect. When Louie arrived at the food bank on Friday, in one of two vehicles needed to transport more than 700 pounds of non-perishable food items, Toyota knew he had met his match. “Wow, very impressive,” he said, watching box after box stack up.

Wishing You A Gifted Season To our customers & friends, we at Orchard Valley Glass extend our best wishes for a joyous holiday season and prosperous new year.

Louie and LKB administrator Linda Berg piled about 15 boxes behind the two boxes Toyota had brought from Creston Town Hall. “I have one little regret,” Louie said. “I didn’t take the time to decorate our boxes like Ron did. But we had a lot of boxes!” The food bank challenge was just one of a string of endeavours Louie has undertaken in the last year to help connect the LKB to the Creston Valley community. A spirited floor hockey game between the LKB and the Creston Valley Thunder Cats also helped with the collection of donations. Non-perishable food items were the price of the admission to the game. “Our staff also donated a month’s worth of money that they usually collect for the office coffee fund,” Louie added. Louie didn’t arrive with boxes only. He also presented a $1,000 cheque to the food bank, most of which came from a Community Initiatives grant from Regional District of Central Kootenay Area B. Toyota wasn’t about to stand by and be totally humiliated by his local government counterpart. He wrote out a personal cheque for $500 and

turned it over to the food bank. The competition resulted in a good haul for the food bank. The weight of the boxes totalled more

than 717 pounds, a Gleaners representative said. The food, along with $1,500, will be appreciated by local residents in need at this time of year.

A Christmas Poem By Dale Moberg She slipped into her winter coat, and donned her knitted scarf Pulled on her purple mittens, she left drying by the hearth Put on her winter boots, she left sitting by the door Then tugged a toque upon her head, same one she always wore She shoveled off the sidewalk, that led out to the shed She tried to keep on top of it, for it’s where they kept the sled. She thought about her husband, he’d be working late tonight And come home fairly tuckered, and tired from his flight Correlating with her husband, she too had a busy day It was time to sit and rest, take a break and lounge away She sipped on her hot chocolate, while nibbling on a treat While a pot full of tepid water, soothed her aching feet She’d cooked for near two hundred, the weariness set in She’s no longer a spring chicken, much to her chagrin It made her feel fulfilled, seeing them all fed The sighing of contentment, as they drifted off to bed She put a plate of cookies near the glass of milk she poured And beside- a note for Santa, keep him safe tonight, dear Lord She fought to stay awake, her best intentions, did give pause And her eyelids slowly closed, Good night now, Mrs. Claus They covered her with a blanket, And as they watched her plump cheeks wiggle The elves winked at each other, then they all started to giggle

The Beauty of the Universe BY TROY MESSINGER Grade 12

Every single atom on Earth and in this solar system came from the inside of a churning, bubbling star. These crucibles of the cosmos because unstable in their later years, collapsed under their own gravity, and then exploded, scattering their enriched guts across the galaxy, in a supernova that utterly dwarfs any explosion we can conjure. They released massive plumes of hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen — the building blocks of life. These celestial, primordial dust clouds formed enormous accumulations of matter that through gravity clumped together to form new stars and planets, and on one of those planets, life.

We have evolved from raw hydrogen to human beings in 13.7 billion years, and the beauty of the world is not the atoms that go into it, but the way those atoms are put together. Just look around, this is what hydrogen does given enough time, and when you look up at the night sky you realize the irony of the universe, that you are part of this universe, you are in this universe and, more importantly, you are the universe experience itself; we are all star dust in the highest exalted way. Now, considering that life on Earth has occurred rather quickly upon its formation, we can only imagine what other quality and type of life is outside of our solar system. With the vastness of space considered, the probability becomes

astonishing; the speck of light you see at night is a star that probably has a planet around it and there may be things on that planet looking at our sun wondering about our speck. Now considering most of the stars you see are only in our galaxy, the Milky Way, they shrink one hundred billions times further when you acknowledge the other one hundred billion galaxies in our observable universe. As the ancient myth makers knew, we are children equally of the Earth and the sky, and with our tenure on this planet we have accumulated dangerous evolutionary baggage, but we’ve also acquired passion for other love of our children, and great, soaring passionate intelligence, our clear tools for our continued survival.

She spent years sewing up these wounds one by one some harder than others some requiring a stronger thread, and as time passed those wounds had healed and she as able to continue

But today, as the last passenger stepped off the train as the rain started to pour, she found herself staring into a pair of familiar blue eyes and felt the stitching on her heart slowly begin to unravel.

Thunder Cats lose to Leafs, Rockies, beat Steam BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

Lack of focus and lack of effort combined to create a disappointing weekend for the Creston Valley Thunder Cats, who lost two games and won one, and are now tied for fourth place in the Eddie Mountain Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. The Thunder Cats ended a seven-game losing streak a week earlier, but a match against the Nelson Leafs resulted in a 6-2 defeat. “The score really doesn't reflect the game as a whole,” said head coach Josh Hepditch. “We outshot them 34-22. We actually played a pretty good game.” The Leafs started the scoring with a first-period goal, followed by one early in the second. Angus Johnston netted the Thunder Cats’ first on a power play at 14:36 — and then things started to go wrong, allowing the Leafs to score three more in nine minutes. “We just had a stretch in the second where we lost focus,” said Hepditch. “Even the start of the second period was OK. It’s just in the second half we lost focus and they took full advantage of us.”

The Leafs scored their sixth goal in the third period, a minute before a powerplay goal by Marcel Fuchs. Hepditch hoped the well-played portions of the game would give the Thunder Cats some confidence, but it didn’t seem to be there the next night when the Thunder Cats hosted and lost 4-1 to the Columbia Valley Rockies, with whom they are now tied with 26 points. “That was a poor effort,” he said. “I don’t know if we psyched ourselves out but we had a very poor performance.” The game got off to a slow start, with the Rockies scoring twice in the first period, and the Thunder Cats managing far less shots than the night before. “We only had 11 shots after two periods, which isn’t a good stat to have,” Hepditch said. Trevor Hanna scored the Thunder Cats’ only goal in the second period, shorthanded with 2:28 remaining. The Rockies scored their third and fourth goals late in the third period. The Thunder Cats rebounded on Sunday when they hosted the Summerland Steam, to whom they lost 5-4 in overtime during a November away game. The outcome was different this time, with the

CRESTON VALLEY MINOR HOCKEY ASSOCIATION The Creston Valley Minor Hockey Association’s bantam rep team travelled to Cranbrook on the weekend for the Cranbrook Tier 3 tournament. The excitement started Friday afternoon at Western Financial Place where the boys lost their battle against Invermere with a final score of 4-1. Cole Bright was starting goaltender, and Creston’s only goal was scored by Brody Ryan. Friday evening the boys set out for a win against Claresholm, Alta., at Memorial Arena and found one, with a final score of 9-3. Matthew Armitage was starting goaltender. Two goals were scored in the first period by Jake Kolodychuck, both assisted by Ethan Plotnikoff. Two more goals were scored late in the second. First one buried by Jordan Wood, unassisted, followed a minute later by Tyler Everett, assisted by Plotnikoff. Fifty-three seconds into the third, an unassisted goal was scored by Ryan. Minutes later, Matthew Toews found the back of the net, assisted by Ryan and Wood. Scoring Creston’s seventh goal was Jake Livingstone (unassisted). With half the third period remaining, Plotnikoff snipped, with the assist going to Ryan. With minutes left, Toews got his second of the game, also assisted by Ryan. Saturday morning the boys were back at Western Financial Place facing St. Albert, Alta. Bright and Armitage shared goaltending. Creston’s first goal was scored by Kolodychuck, assisted by Alex Blackmore. Four minutes later, Livingstone scored, with the assist going to Ryan. One second-period goal was scored by Kolodychuck, assisted by Plotnikoff. Third period goals went to Levi Palmer (unassisted) and, making it a hat trick, Kolodychuk, assisted by Plotnikoff. Creston took back-to-back wins, with a final score of 5-3. See MINOR, page 24

first goal less than nine minutes into the game, with Creston native Matti Jmaeff scored the team’s second on a power play at 19:04 in the second period. The Steam scored a single goal by the end of the second. The third period saw Andrew Hodder and Hanna each score, with the Steam answering with their second goal late in the game. The win was a welcome one for the team, which is just about ready to take a Christmas break. “We didn’t want to be going into Christmas in last place,” said Hepditch. “We wanted to get points back and found a way.” The Thunder Cats’ final game before the break runs tonight in Golden, against the division-leading Rockets, who have 41 points, two and three points, respectively, ahead of the Fernie Ghostriders and Kimberley Dynamiters. The Thunder Cats have had a tough time against the Rockets this season, with 2-1, 6-4 and 4-3 losses and a 7-3 win. “We’ve had a couple really good games with them,” said Hepditch. “We compete well with them every night.” And this time, he hopes the outcome will be in the Thunder Cats’ favour. “Those are division points that we’ve got to find a way to start winning,” he said.

It is with deep sadness that the family of Norman Grieve announce his passing on December 10, 2012. He died peacefully with his loving wife Edna by his side. Norman was born in New Westminster, BC on Christmas Eve 1921. He served overseas in World War II in the Canadian Army. After the war he attended UBC and the University of Durham in England, and graduated in dentistry from Durham in 1953. He returned to Canada and practiced dentistry in New Westminster until his retirement. After retiring, he undertook dentistry aid terms in Inuvik and Montserrat, but mainly devoted his time to his gardening and other interests. Except for his times in England, Norman lived in BC, including New Westminster, Burnaby, North Surrey, South Pender Island, Creston and most recently Victoria. Norman was an accomplished amateur singer. His warm, rich voice graced the bass sections of numerous secular and church choirs over many years, and he also enraptured many with his frequent solo performances. The choirs he belonged to included the Vancouver Bach Choir, whose executive he served on as president for a time. His hobbies included golf, Àshing and sailing; activities he loved to share with his son, David. Norman enjoyed classical music and reading history and literature. He was an avid walker and gardener, and enjoyed spending time with family. Norman is survived by his wife of 67 years Edna; his son David (Susan); and granddaughters Emily and Janine (Sean). He was predeceased by his brothers Donald, Gordon and Ralph. A Memorial Service was held on Friday, December 14, 2012 at 2:00 pm at First Memorial Funeral Services, 1155 Fort Street, Victoria. ,n lieu of à owers, a donation in Norman’s name may be made to the SPCA.

Clara Boese Elliott April 29, 1960 ~December 5, 2012 Clara Boese Elliott was born on April 29, 1960 to Alvin and Esther Friesen Boese in Abbotsford, BC. She departed this earthly life at age 52 in a tragic vehicle accident on December 5, 2012 near Cranbrook, BC. Clara’s arrival in the family brought much happiness, especially to her only sister. At the age of one, she and her family moved to Linden, AB. She started school in Linden, and in 1968 when she was in grade 3, the family moved to Pincher Creek where she spent happy carefree years growing up with her sister and four older brothers. Being the youngest in the family, she was a special joy with her sunshiny personality. She gave her heart to Jesus in her early teens, and faithfully served Him all her life. She was baptized March 18, 1974 becoming a member of the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite. She was a happy and conscientious Christian, always wanting to do what was right. Clara’s loving and unselÀsh personality shone through in the jobs she pursued and she won many friends. She especially loved her elderly care clients, the ones she cleaned houses for. On October 14, 1989 Clara married Howard Elliott at Pincher Creek. They shared 23 happy years together. She was a wonderful wife and mother, caring lovingly and giving unselÀshly for the good of her family. Clara’s support to her husband was a joy that he will continue to treasure. She enjoyed her children and taught them the Christian way. Four and one half years ago, Howard and Clara and their family moved to beautiful Creston, BC where they made many dear and precious friends. Clara was warm and outgoing, and brought sunshine and happiness wherever she went. She loved to share a good laugh with friends. She extended

Her nieces and nephews remember with pleasure how she loved to tease them, bounce their babies on her lap, or appear with a surprise poppy seed cake for their birthdays. She was blessed with an ability to live above life’s difÀculties. Clara’s endearing ways brought many smiles and much pleasure. We mourn her untimely passing, but have conÀdence she is at rest in the Lord, and look forward to a glad reunion day. Those left to treasure sweet and precious memories are her husband, Howard; three children: Josh, Brittany and Brandon; mother Esther Boese of Pincher Creek, AB; sister Inez (Henry) Enns of Linden, AB; three brothers, Roy (Barbara) Boese; Ron (Lola) Boese, all of Pincher Creek, AB; and Leonard (Darlene) Boese of Lethbridge, AB; sister-in-law Lorna (Tony) Wohlgemuth of Delisle, SK; father-in-law Lance Elliott (Shelley) of Canal Flats, BC; mother-in-law Bernice Blair of Sundre, AB; stepfather Rick (Karen) Mintz of Prince George, BC; and sister-in-law Karla Elliott of Okotoks; and other relatives and friends too numerous to mention. Fire chief concerned by loss of volunteers BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Retiring Creston Fire Rescue Chief Bruce Mabin presented his final quarterly report to town council at the Dec. 11 regular meeting. In it, he said the fire department responded to 61 incidents in the third quarter, including 15 motor vehicle incidents. A total of 339 man-hours were devoted to fighting structural fires, in which

losses totalled $301,200. Total property value saved is estimated at $542,000. Mabin’s report expressed concern about the recent loss of a number of volunteer firefighters, some of whom have had to take work out of town to support their families. The department now has 24 members, of which 15 are allowed to enter a structure for rescue or fire suppression purposes. It takes three to five years to fully certify a firefighter and an equal amount

of additional time to train to officer level. Industry standards indicate a firefighting force of 39 is considered necessary to ensure that a minimum of 13 personnel respond to an emergency call to a family dwelling, small business or light industry. “It is a common issue facing many departments today that the loss of senior experienced members, who provide direct leadership, mentoring and experience

Kettle back as RDCK board chair Nelson Star

John Kettle was returned unopposed Thursday for a third consecutive one-year term as chair of the Regional District of Central Kootenay. The Area B director said this year was filled with changes and challenges, including the completion of a corporate review, hiring of a new administrator, the switch to a new

accounting system, and response to several natural disasters, foremost the Johnson’s Landing slide. “The challenges of 2012 will probably be in a book somewhere,” he said. “I don’t think any regional district’s gone through what we’ve gone through this year … It’s been trying, but we got through it.” Slocan’s Hillary Elliott was acclaimed to her third term as vicechair.

needed to work in these dangerous environments, are leaving the fire service for various reasons,” he reported. “Without having the experienced leadership on scene, responders may be limited to performing exterior protection to adjacent property and may not be able to rescue trapped victims. “The recruitment of members is ongoing, but as mentioned previously, it takes time for training and experience. “The consequence of this situation may seem obvious in the threat of possible loss of life and property. However, the limitation of not being able to succeed in saving a life, protecting property and helping those in need is a direct conflict with the intent of the volunteer paid on-call member for joining the service. It may cause critical incident stress that affects the members both personally and professionally which could see members leaving the service, resulting in a reduction of responders.” Mabin added that the result could be increased insurance rates to property owners.

Council Briefs •Chief building official Ross Beddoes reported that five new building permits were issued in November, including one new single-family residence and one duplex residential project. The remainder were for small residential additions. Only one building permit was issued in November 2011. •Coun. Wesly Graham will represent council in developing and implementing a Welcoming Communities action plan for new immigrants. A grant has been awarded to Kootenay Employment Services to create the plan. •In a special meeting on Dec. 10, council accepted a recommendation from Steffan Klassen, finance and corporate services director, to reduce scheduled increases to the sewer rates in 2013 and 2014 from three per cent to two per cent. “The current bylaw would implement a higher rate increase than is necessary at this time,” Klassen reported. Council passed the amendment to the sewer rates and regulations bylaw on Dec. 11.
