Opposition forces council to explore Colliery options I CITY STAFFF to meet with residents bent on saving dams. BY TOBY GORMAN THE NEWS BULLETIN
Christmas feast Brianna Deimert, 7-10 Club bookkeeper, left, and Gord Fuller, club chairman, show some of what’s on the menu for the club’s fourth annual Christmas morning breakfast. The Salvation Army, Nanaimo Seventh-Day Adventist Church and Together We Can are also serving meals and hosting Christmas Day activities. For the full story, please see page 5. CHRIS BUSH/THE NEWS BULLETIN
A flood of new information by a community group intent on saving two dams at Colliery Dam Park has resulted in city council agreeing to explore options other than removal. In early November, city council decided in camera to remove the two dams and drain the lakes at the park because of the potential threat to human life posed in the event of an earthquake or extreme rainfall. That decision drew heavy criticism from the community which views the park as a south end jewel, and resulted in the formation of Save the Colliery Dams representatives, a group of residents who want to see other options explored. On Monday, members of the group presented city council with options they say they feel the city didn’t adequately consider before deciding to remove the dams and, in their view, ruin the park. Council responded by agreeing to direct city staff engineers to explore options for dam rehabilitation, repair or replace-
ment, an exercise that will cost as much as $60,000 and take at least six months to complete. The lakes were scheduled to be drained and the dams removed next summer when water flow is expected to be at its lowest. The deconstruction cost is estimated at $7 million. Lorne Gale, an engineer with a doctorate in fluid dynamics surface chemistry, and member of Save the Colliery Dams, provided council with alternatives to removal and cost estimates for mitigating the threat in the event of a natural anomaly. Gale suggested the dams could be rehabilitated enough to reduce the risk at a cost of $500,000 each, with the spillways being upgraded to handle a 1,000-year rain event, enough to reduce the threat of a breach from the Dam Safety Branch’s ‘extreme’ rating to ‘high’. “The total cost would be about $3 million and it wouldn’t be that difficult a task to do,” said Gale. “The risk can be mitigated at a substantially less cost than to remove them, and we get to retain a jewel in our city. Is that not a reasonable solution?” Other ideas also came forward, such as generating power at the site, a possibility that could also produce revenue and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. ◆ See ‘COUNCIL’ /4

Spare change adds up in annual penny drive I LAST CHANCE to donate comes tomorrow (Dec. 21) as 2012 campaign ends. BY JENN M C GARRIGLE THE NEWS BULLETIN
A handful of spare change adds up when you multiply it over and over. That is the idea behind the Nanaimo News Bulletin’s annual Pennies for Presents campaign – a whole bunch of people supporting in a small way to make a big difference. The campaign collects spare change for distribution to three charities that support children in Nanaimo – the Great Nanaimo Toy Drive, the Nanaimo Boys and Girls Club and the Salvation Army. Money raised goes to ensuring every child has a Christmas present waiting for them under the tree and to helping low-income families get the fixings they need to celebrate together over the holidays. Since 1996, the campaign has raised
almost $154,000 in Nanaimo – a testament to how much pocket change adds up when schools, businesses and residents chip in to help make a difference in children’s lives. This week is the public’s last chance to participate in this annual fundraiser, as the 2012 campaign wraps up tomorrow (Dec. 21). People can drop off donations at the News Bulletin office at 777 Poplar St. or one of the community drop-off locations: InPrint downtown, John’s Bedroom Barn, Northridge Fitness, Canadian Tire, Sink or Swim Scuba, La-Z-Boy, Royal LePage at Brooks Landing, Coast Realty downtown, the ICBC Driver Licensing Office on Metral Drive, Quality Foods in University Village and Cline Medical Centre on Prideaux Street. Donations do not have to be rolled – our volunteers at Berwick on the Lake do the penny rolling for the campaign and Tom and Wig MacDonald roll all of the silver coins – and denominations of all kinds are accepted, from pennies, nickels and dimes to $100 bills.
NIOMI PEARSON/THE NEWS BULLETIN
These young members of the Chase River Boys and Girls Club stopped by the News Bulletin Thursday afternoon to drop off a plethora of pennies for the Pennies for Presents Campaign, which runs until Dec. 21. From left to right: Caris Watson, Ryan Klapstein, Taylor Walker, Jenn McGarrigle, with the News Bulletin, Aurora Mitchell and Rhys Edwards.
Besides helping out a good cause, there is another good reason to get rid of your copper coins – the federal government plans to eliminate the penny from Canada’s coinage system and the Royal Canadian Mint will stop circulating pennies in February.
For more information about the campaign, please call 250-734-4626 or e-mail reporter@nanaimobulletin.com. People are also welcome to share their Pennies campaign photos and stories at www.facebook.com/nanaimobulletin. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com
Motion to review city’s core services fails in close council vote

is pretty darn good,” said Pattje. “And I view the strategic plan as marching orders from the citizens, and through that discussion I can’t find anywhere where a core review was high on the list of priorities of residents. mer revealed that 90 per cent of Nanaimo residents are content with the services they receive for their taxes. Kipp dismissed the survey as having too small of a sample size. Coun. Bill Bestwick, who supported the review, said a look from an outside source could help the city find efficiencies. “There are those who are con-

cerned this is a slash and burn, but that’s not what this is. It’s to ensure our city is sustainable and that we are proactive,” said Bestwick. Coun. Diane Brennan disagreed, saying the template for core reviews in other B.C. municipalities has been to reduce services, and that external consultants aren’t tapped in to Nanaimo’s pulse. “Outside consultants don’t know what our city’s needs and wants are,” she said, adding she felt there were other motives by Kipp for the review. “This is a con job and it’s been a con job from the beginning.” Pattje added that on top of previous reviews, annual budget deliberations are also an opportunity for council and staff to review city finances and services with public input. reporter2@nanaimobulletin.com

A second attempt to push a core review of city hall, and the services it provides, through city council by Coun. Jim Kipp failed 5-4 Monday, the same result as his initial attempt two years ago. Kipp argued that with a ballooning budget – Nanaimo’s budget has increased from $143 million two years ago to $171 million for 2013 – the city needs to take a step back and reassess the services it provides and the money it spends on those services. “We need a benchmark,” said Kipp. “This isn’t about bringing in a right-wing group that will slash and burn our services. It’s about an increasing budget, asset management and having a solid grip on the things that we do and the services we provide.”
The idea of an external core review is to hire an outside consultant at a cost of an estimated $100,000 to $200,000 to assess staff wages and benefits, as well as city services that include everything from core services, like protective services, to discretionary services, like recreation facilities and programs. Coun. Fred Pattje, who voted against the review, argued that council has spent more than $300,000 in the last 24 months on several reviews, including management structure, management compensation, contracting out policies, and fire response reviews, as well the development of the Corporate Strategic Plan, which ties funding to priorities established by council through an extensive public consultation process. “We’ve established that the financial situation in Nanaimo

Council obligated to look at options From /1 Coun. Diane Brennan challenged Gale, asking him why council should consider his ideas over city engineers and a $65,000 consultant report. Bill Sims, the city’s manager for water resources, said city engineers did perform a myriad of tests and considerations and concluded that dam removal to eliminate risk to people and property was the most appropriate decision. “Overall, why should I prefer your opinion on the cost estimates to the opinions we’ve received [through staff]?” Bren-

nan asked Gale. “We’re just trying to establish that reasonable consideration was not given to all of the options,” said Gale. Mayor John Ruttan said he felt the new and conflicting information obligated council to consider alternatives and review options. City staff, council and members of Save the Colliery Dams Representatives have agreed to exchange information further and meet with provincial Dam Safety Branch officials to determine if options proposed by the group are attainable.

Dinners offer food, friendship SEVERAL CHARITY groups host Christmas gatherings for people without family nearby.

BY JENN M C GARRIGLE THE NEWS BULLETIN
Several groups are spreading Christmas cheer into the lives of those in the community who have little to eat or no family in town this holiday season by hosting free meals. The Salvation Army kicks off the season by hosting a turkey dinner on Sunday (Dec. 23) at the New Hope Centre from 3-5 p.m. The organization hosts a second dinner – this time ham – on New Year’s Day. Both dinners are free – the first is sponsored by Dodd’s Furniture and Mattress and the second sponsored by Nanaimo Toyota – but people are asked to pick up tickets from the New Hope Centre, said Rob Anderson, director of Nanaimo community ministries. The Nanaimo 7-10 Club is hosting its fourth annual Christmas Day breakfast at its headquarters at
285 Prideaux St. Breakfast runs from 9 a.m. to noon and the menu is scrambled eggs with ham, fruit, juice, dessert and a take away bag lunch of roast beef and cheddar sandwiches. “People can show up anytime during those three hours,” said Gord Fuller, chairman. “It gives people a chance to get out on Christmas Day, not be shut in by themselves, and just really enjoy the day.” The Nanaimo Seventh-Day Adventist Church at 2400 Highland Blvd. is another option on Christmas Day for those looking for some company and a meal. For the sixth year, the church opens its doors to the public for the entire day. A pancake breakfast takes place at 10 a.m. and then a full turkey dinner at 3:30 p.m. People are welcome to come hang out there for the day – the church will have Christmas movies

It’s amazing the different people we get to meet. Last year we had about 125 people.” Free transportation to and from the event is available by calling 250-729-5976. Together We Can will also hand out turkey soup, ham sandwiches, hot drinks and warm clothing Dec. 24-26 at Cavan Street and Victoria Road. This group will be out Christmas Eve from 5-8 p.m., Christmas Day from 8 a.m. to noon and then 5-8 p.m., and Boxing Day from 8 a.m. to noon. Don Vanier said the event is targeted at the less fortunate who might not have family they can go to over the holidays. “The main thing is they’ve got a place where there’s going to

Fo o d b a n k s a n d warehouse centres are wrapping up the gathering phase of their programs as they swing into distribution mode for the holidays. Hamperville, operating this year from Laird/Wheaton GM Group’s old Madill building on Bowen Road, has gathered and sorted food since mid-November and its 300 volunteers started distributing hampers Wednesday. Jim Duddridg e, Hamperville spokesman, said it looks like donation totals will be lower this year compared to 2011, which was a bumper year for donations that piled up 57,000 kg of food plus
$45,000 in cash used to buy fresh food, such as turkeys, chickens, hams, oranges, potatoes, carrots, bread, milk, cheese and eggs. Food is still coming in until Friday (Dec. 21) and some Nanaimo high schools have yet to bring their contributions, but it looks like donations will be down in 2012. As of Tuesday 45,500 kg of food had been brought in, which included 6,800 kg of food from Hamperville’s single biggest contributor Big Boys Toys. Monetary donations might be up this year, though, with $19,000 in cash donations so far – that figure converts to about $23,000 with food retailer discounts – brought in by the end of last week, showing
a higher figure than for the same period last year. T his year’s food donations alone represent $275,000 worth of groceries. “That’s just food,” Duddridge said. “Then you add in our cash to that and we’re up to $300,000, so that’s a hell of a lot of generosity there.” This year’s figures mean no one will go without a food hamper and the worst case scenario is that there could be less food left over to carry food banks into the new year than there was in 2011. There are other opportunities for people to share with others before Christmas. Wal-Mart will match all donations made at the Salvation Army

Storybook program connects fathers with children BY NIOMI PEARSON THE NEWS BULLETIN
The John Howard Society of Nanaimo is looking to the community to help keep the pages turning on a program designed to foster family literacy and connections between incarcerated fathers and their children. For the past 11 months, the society, in partnership with the Nanaimo Correctional Centre, has been operating Storybook Dads, a program which provides books as gifts to children of incarcerated fathers at the jail, as well as a CD containing an MP3 recording of their fathers reading the book aloud. The book and CD is then shipped off for each child to read along with their father’s voice. Since the local program started in January, more than 200 books have been recorded and distributed to children locally and across the province. But the one-time funding the society received from the city has run out, and until more funding can be secured, John Howard Society’s Cheryl Dodge, who helps administer the program, is hoping to get by with kindness from the community. “It’s an absolutely amazing program,” she said. “We have noticed increased literacy levels with all of our dads which helps them to build confidence and will ensure success once they are reunited with their families.” The fathers must meet eligibility criteria to apply and once selected, are given the books about two days in advance of the recording. Then John Howard volunteers come in and coach the dad through his reading and record the session with a simple MP3 recorder, which is then burned to disk. “The first time a dad comes in to read with our volunteers, they’ll be very nervous, they’ll be unsure, and it is a bit of a

daunting exercise to read out loud in front of strangers,” Dodge said. “[But] it’s been noted that dads have been walking around the various units reading out loud or practicing, and that’s pretty cool.” The program is based on the Elizabeth Fry Society’s program, which has been offered in correctional centres on the Lower Mainland for years. Dodge said she would like to see the program expand to model a program like Storybook Dads in the U.K., where the recordings are digitally edited and enhanced by specially trained prisoners, providing them with valuable work experience and qualification. “They’ve gone so far as to create a social enterprise within the original institution
that started the program.” Dodge said while she has received plenty of support for the program from the general public, others still maintain the perception that incarcerated individuals should not be given special treatment. Lisette Patenaude, professor for the department of criminology at Vancouver Island University, said it is a limited view that fails to take into account the children, who can be the forgotten victims of crime. “If one believes in the adage that it takes a community to raise a child then why would one not support such a program?” she said. “These incarcerated men have immediate victims but these children are also victims by losing their fathers to
incarceration; a choice that the child did not make.” The majority of offenders have lower literacy levels than the general population, Patenaude said, adding that a program like Storybook Dads is rehabilitative, not only because it helps bridge relations between parent and child, but also because it promotes life skills such as reading comprehension. “If one takes the simple view that incarceration should be solely punishment then we can expect an increase in recidivism,” she said. “When one realizes that there is a larger stake in conformity – that is positive familial relations – the less likely one is to break the law. Increasing the literacy of inmates provides a better opportunity for them when they return to society, and they will return.” The maximum term for time served at Nanaimo Correctional Centre is two years less a day. Dodge said many of the prisoners at the jail come from across the province, which makes it harder for those children to visit, and the existence of a program like Storybook Dads valuable. “If we want them to be productive and proactive and pro-social members of our community, then we need to help them be that way,” Dodge said. “By helping them strengthen their connections to their children [it] helps strengthen the connection to the community, and it makes them less likely to reoffend.” There are two ways to support Storybook Dads: by donating funds or new children’s books (newborn-12) to the John Howard Society, or donating Canada Post gift cards. Please contact the society at 250-754-1266 or visit http://www.jhsnr.org/. Patenaude has also started up a book collection at VIU, in the social science dean’s office, Bldg. 356, Rm. 310. reporter3@nanaimobulletin.com

FUNDRAISER AIMS to help soldier hurt in Afghanistan. BY JENN McGARRIGLE THE NEWS BULLETIN
A Nanaimo student’s proposal to help a local war veteran injured in Afghanistan is now a finalist in a nationwide competition that helps pay for projects creating positive change in communities. Rebecca Lumley, a Grade 12 Wellington Secondary School
student, along with teacher John Mandziuk and about 70 student council and marketing students, want to buy state-of-the-art technology to help Capt. Trevor Greene work toward his goal of walking again. Students learned Monday that thanks to community support through more than 16,000 online votes, the idea is one of 30 finalists in the Aviva Community Fund competition. The winners will be selected by a panel of judges and announced Jan. 29. While the school hopes to win the maximum amount of $150,000, which would pay for the

equipment, being named a finalist means the idea will be given at least $5,000. “Overall, the whole building is pretty excited about where the next step goes,” said Mandziuk. “In the long run, I think the biggest benefit is what we’re teaching these kids – that they can make a difference. Not just have ideas, but put them into effect.” Greene was wounded while serving in Afghanistan. On March 4, 2006, he was talking with a group of elders in a village, his helmet and weapon aside, when a young man snuck up behind him and drove an axe
into his skull. The axe cleaved into the area of his brain that controls basic motor functions. His ongoing recovery has defied the odds and inspired others. The technology that Lumley wants to buy, from Californiabased Ekso Bionics, consists of a portable system of braces, motors and an onboard computer designed to allow wheelchairbound patients to walk. It costs $140,000 plus $10,000 per year to maintain and is not yet available in Canada. Mandziuk said the technology would be stored at the CBI Health Centre in Nanaimo and
available to others in the community and in Greene’s case, it could help him re-learn to walk on his own. Mandziuk said the Royal Canadian Legion is involved and even if the school does not win the $150,000, students plan to continue fundraising efforts. “We’re already starting to make arrangements with the legions to do local fundraising,” said Mandziuk. Charity works to helpp others It’s hard to imagine what shape Nanaimo’s less fortunate would be in if not for the efforts of charitable organizations and the generosity of residents and businesses. That’s not to say their worries are over, but at least most are going to have some food on the table over the holidays and one or two presents under the Christmas tree. And that’s because Nanaimo has lived up to its proud history of giving, even when economic times are proving tough for many. Hamperville accepted more than 45,000 kilograms of donated food in support of Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank and the Salvation Army’s food programs. That’s down from last year’s record donation, but no one is going to be denied a hamper of groceries. The Great Nanaimo Toy Drive experienced the generosity of the public as well, with donations of toys and cash up from last year, and the News Bulletin’s Pennies for Presents campaign saw a significant jump from a year ago, raising close to $5,000 so far for the toy drive, Salvation Army and Nanaimo Boys and Girls Club. Some charities got a little creative to capture the attention and giving spirit of people. Instead of the regular ringing of the bells, some Salvation Army kettle donation stands had volunteers singing Christmas carols or belting out a tune on a saxophone. Whatever it takes, it’s worth it. Because if someone isn’t dropping some spare change into a kettle or picking up a few extra groceries to donate to a hamper campaign, those in need will go without. Thankfully, the desire to give whatever we can and pull together to help one another allows charities to fulfill their roles to the best of their abilities. It’s a partnership that most wish wasn’t needed, but one that works. Pressure didn’t sway officials
To the Editor, Re: City swaps land for Pioneer Forest, Dec. 6. The essence of the slant of the story leaves the impression public concern over the future of Pioneer Forest created the direct decision to craft co-operation between the Nanaimo school board and the city. Not so. As a former school trustee, I served on the facilities planning committee for years with two other trustees and staff. This committee had the responsibility to meet, separately, on a regular basis, with representatives of the city, regional board, Town of Ladysmith
and other agencies to work on issues of land use cooperation related to growth, recreation opportunities and rationalization of conflicts. School districts in B.C. could not legally hold title to land for school purposes until 1947. Nanaimo is one of the oldest communities in B.C., therefore coal companies, individuals and the city would offer land on which schools needed to be built. One of the major discussions with the City of Nanaimo over the years was the need for more playing fields. The district had them and the city did not. The city had the revenue to upgrade
the fields and the district did not. You can see why cooperation would benefit the whole community. With changes in the political and administrative leadership at the city and the district within the last five years, the time was ripe to get on with what had been talked about for more than a decade. The district developed a strategic plan that calls for the rationalization of facilities and property within a long-term district facilities plan. A key ingredient was the development of an asset management plan suggested to the board a few years ago
by Phil Turin, district secretary-treasurer. The report provided the key to opening of serious conversations with the city and other local governments over the past few years and the preparation of a report that folded in the exchange of land between the city and district that was long overdue. Pioneer Park was just one of the issues to be addressed. City council and staff and school board trustees and staff need to be congratulated for taking this important step for the benefit of the whole community. Nelson Allen Nanaimo

Dumpers need to clean up their act To the Editor, Re: Harsher penalties won’t stop littering, Letters, Dec. 16. One just needs to walk down Tenth Street or where Southwood Drive ends in a cul-de-sac off Park Avenue to see piles of dumped garbage. A whole truckload of old windows, drywall, door handles … you name it. One day, while out walking, I spotted a pickup truck with trash in the box, backing up to the other trash. The driver and I had a stare fight as I walked toward his truck, memorizing his licence plate number. He left. I realize we must catch them at it, but if people are caught, they need to have their vehicle impounded for a period of time and their driver’s licence revoked. A few more instances like that and I wonder how many
people would feel the risk is worth it. I know it does cost to recycle and dispose of our garbage properly, but what price are we going to put on our environment? Clean up your acts you illegal dumpers. Lee Masciarelli Nanaimo
Union stands for B.C. workers To the Editor, Good on the United Steelworkers for standing strong for Canadian jobs. Where is Jim Sinclair, the B.C. Federation of Labour’s big guy, on this foreign workers issue? There should be many more unions involved in a much bigger protest to keep foreign workers from depleting and eroding our jobs. I’m big on British Columbia and all of Western Canada. If we are going to extract and sell our resources,

Banning stoves not an answer To the Editor, Re: Old stoves a health hazard, Letters, Dec. 6. Flo Dolega is lucky if she only smells Harmac pulp mill six times a year. But even when she
doesn’t smell it, she’s still breathing in its pollutants every minute of every day that she’s in Nanaimo. Why people passively accept a pulp mill, whose plume of smoke and foul smell is an unattractive Nanaimo trademark, and complain about seasonal wood smoke is beyond me. I have yet to see a house whose chimney pours out choking smoke throughout the day, every day of the year. Thick smoke is usually fairly brief, when a fire is started. Of course some people are thoughtless and burn wet wood or garbage or just aren’t any good at making fires. If this bothers you, try talking to your neighbour, as you would about a barking dog or any other problem. The answer isn’t to ban wood stoves or make everyone buy a new one. Gregory Roscow Nanaimo

Many Nanaimo residents are suffering the ups and downs of weight loss, fighting their way through the misconceptions and myths. Arya Shar ma, an expert on obesity and weight management, presents Stop Being a Yo-Yo: A lighter look at the ups and downs of weight loss, Jan. 7 at Nanaimo Centre Stage, 25 Victoria Rd. at 7 p.m. Sharma breaks down why exercise is really more about calories ‘in’ than about calories ‘out.’ He also tackles the role of stress, sleep and self-esteem in weight loss and weight management. Topics include what works and what doesn’t, setting realistic goals and some of the lesser k n ow n d r ive r s o f weight gain. “Health is not measured in pounds,” he said. “Yes, excess weight can be an important health problem, but not everyone with a few extra pounds needs to lose weight and not everyone who is skinny is healthy.” Sharma doesn’t just look at what people eat or how much they exercise. “It is far more important to understand why people do what they do,” he said. The event will be followed by a question and answer session. Tickets are $25 at the door and all proceeds support the Canadian Obesity Network. Anyone wishing to attend can RSVP online at www. drsharma.ca.

Decision to donate an organ a personal choice To the Editor, At seven years post liver transplant, I want to take this opportunity to thank my donor’s family and registered donors for having made the decision that makes transplants possible. I understand this can be a difficult decision in some cases, especially if the donors themselves had not made their wishes known. I also want to wish registered potential donors and all other donor families a merry Christmas, happy new year as well as a long healthy and prosperous life. It is so unfortunate the gift of life in the case of organ donation has to come at such a loss to others. This, in many cases, happens during festive times such as Christmas and other holidays as these occasions are statistically when more accidents happen that can result in tragic loss of life. This is a decision that cannot be avoided should someone die in such a way that they can be an organ donor and have not yet made that choice. Their family will be asked to make that decision for them, and in some cases, may be too traumatize to make the right choice not knowing what their wishes might have been. This decision is also particularly difficult in the case of children and should be made in advance by parents of children under 19. Unfortunately it takes a child to save a child in many cases due to organ size. Please discuss this with children who are old enough to understand. Please note that
organ donation is not like giving blood. People can register regardless of age or any medical condition. The highly
qualified transplant team will assess any potential donor’s organs and tissue at the time and may possibly match them
APPLAUSE to someone with the same medical condition.
The oldest solid organ donor in the province was 90 years of age. The criteria is the health of the organ not the age
of the donor. In closing I hope that anyone not having made the decision to register as an organ donor
takes the time to do so online at www. transplant.bc.ca or 1-800-663-6189. Serge Vaillancourt Nanaimo

Looking glass world becomes panto tale BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN
L
aura Buechler embraced her inner dark side to play The Queen of
Hearts. She watched movies with evil characters and had fun embracing her wickedness. The actress even practised making angry faces. Her journey to discovering what makes evil char-
acters tick began as part of her preparation for playing the role of The Queen of Hearts in Nanaimo Theatre Group’s presentation of Alice in Pantoland. For Jamie Jepson, who plays Alice, she had to embrace the opposite persona. “The kids have to love you,” she said about the direction she got from codirector Ian Matthews. During the production
audience members will be introduced to traditional Wonderland characters such as the Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter and Tweeledum and Tweedledee. However, people won’t be watching the traditional story of Alice in Wonderland. The Wonderland inhabitants will enter a world with traditional pantomime characters, such as the good fairy and the dame. The looking glass world

has been altered by the literary talents of co-writers Sheila Coultish, Peggy Harris and Matthews. The writers have incorporated references to Nanaimo culture and issues into the story, which is traditional in pantomime storytelling. This tale begins with the Queen of Hearts and her son the Knave casting a spell over Pantoland and Alice and her friends fighting to break it.
Matthews, who co-director with his daughter Shannon Reimer, said “whether you are nine or 90” people will enjoy the humour of the pantomime. He said people sometimes get confused about just what a pantomime is. Some people attend the show expecting to see people miming, but that’s not the case. Pantomimes are theatrical performances that incorporate dancing, sing-

Diversity showcased during faith event BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN

Harmonies in Faith features performances by various community groups including Snuneymuxw drummers and Coast Salish elder and Shaker church minister Anne Bob.
Harmonies in Faith showcases the rich tapestry of beliefs in the Nanaimo community. The event brings together 12 different faith groups for an evening of chants, songs, dance and spoken word. Sam Letourneau, diversity coordinator for the Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society, said it presents the “rich diversity that exists in the community” and acknowledges the different community beliefs. The event also helps lay the foundation for “respect and understanding” and learning about the collective values everyone shares in common.
“This is the diversity of faiths and the common ground of belief in compassion and how it can bring us together,” she said. The event at the Port Theatre tonight (Dec. 20) will include performances by Snuneymuxw drummers, Coast Salish elder and Shaker church minister Anne Bob, Vesta Fire Entertainment and Andre Nobles, St. Andrew’s United choir, Nanaimo Baha’i Faith, Nanaimo Hindu Cultural Society, Nanaimo Islamic Centre, Nanaimo Druids, Wiccans and Pagans and more. “It was totally amazing so many groups wanted to be part of it, said Letourneau. Letourneau said singing and listening to music crosses cultural boundaries and provides a “great starting place for a dialogue based in appreciation and compassion.” After the performances audience members will be asked to join a discussion led by Paul Bramadat, director for the Centre for Studies in Religion and Society from the University of Victoria. Dover’s next league game isn’t until Jan. 24, when it hosts the Alberni Armada in a 5:30 p.m. game.
BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
If the world does indeed end tomorrow (Dec. 21), then the city’s sports fans will miss out on what’s shaping up to be a fantastic high school basketball season. All six of Nanaimo’s high schools have put together both a senior boys’ and senior girls’ team for 2012-13. What’s more, since 10 of those 12 teams are playing at the AA level – only Dover is AAA – it means more allNanaimo matchups than ever before. The Bulletin caught up with all 12 of the city’s senior basketball teams. For an online version of this story with more photos, visit www.nanaimobulletin.com. Here are previews of the teams:
Dover Bay Dolphins player Michael Pereira will be a player to watch this season as he leads the city’s only senior AAA boys’ basketball team. For lots more high school basketball photos, visit www.nanaimobulletin.com/sports.
DOVER BAY BOYS Dover Bay Secondary School’s senior boys might be a little behind on their basketball right now, but come playoff time they should be right in the mix. Because the AAA league doesn’t start until midJanuary, the team only recently began practising. “They’re lear ning quickly,” said Greg Gillies, coach of the Dolphins. “It was a late start so we will be a little bit behind most teams, but
all that matters is when it comes down to playoff time.” Gillies is an alumnus of the most successful Dover team ever, the 2007 provincial champions, and is getting his players’ attention. “You always wonder if the kids are going to be receptive and if they’re going to be coachable,” he said. “The kids listen and it’s a beautiful thing.” Grade 12 veteran forward Michael Pereira is the leader and will be looked upon to be a top

scorer. Exchange student Dan Heppt will be a key player at the point guard position and the Dolphins will also be looking to returnee Wes Richardson. The Dolphins senior boys will play an exhibition against a Dover alumni team tonight (Dec. 20) at 7 p.m. at the school gym. DOVER BAY GIRLS The Dover Bay Dolphins think if they play a scrappy style, they can be right in the mix in the
senior AAA girls’ league. Coach Dale Nicks said the Oak Bay Bays girls are the class of the Island in the early going this season. “After that it’s just going to be a dogfight for whoever’s going to place second and get that challenge berth [to provincials].” For Dover to be that team, it will need to improve its consistency, practise with intensity and stick to a game plan. “Because we are so short we try to press
teams, because teams that are bigger than us are going to kill us with their half-court offence,” Nicks said. “We try to press and then out of that we try to get lay-ups out of turnovers.” McKenzie Nicks is the team’s top scorer and point guard Jenna Ziemanski is the other primary scoring threat. Gabby Jeffrey is another veteran contributor and Grade 11 forward Francesca Maestrello has emerged as a valuable addition.

WELLINGTON GIRLS The city’s highest high school hoops expectations will come from Wellington’s senior girls. Nanaimo’s only provincially ranked team – the ’Cats are No. 6 – will be trying to make a return trip to the B.C. championship tournament. “This year there’s a bit more expectations,” said Nicole McRae, the team’s coach. “Provincials are obviously a goal of ours but you’ve got to get to North Islands first, and then at Islands you’ve got to be in the top two.” The Wildcats have tremendous depth, so even when starters are subbed off, the pace doesn’t slow. Shooting guard Sara Simovic is the team’s star player but she will be surrounded with talent. Forwards Mariah Van Sickle and Montana Mjaaland are other top scorers and Taelar Keir can score and play aggressive defence. Post player Victoria Brown is a good scorer and rebounder and Ally Keir and Julie Zhao will switch off at point guard. “ We ’ re w ay a h e a d of where we started last year,” said McRae. “Because it’s the same offences, we know them, we already know how to work together. So it’s made a big difference.” The Wildcats girls host the Woodlands Eagles tonight (Dec. 20) at 5 p.m. Continued /B2

Nanaimo News Bulletin Thursday, December 20, 2012
NDSS BOYS Basketball only started a couple of weeks ago, and already this is one of the winningest seasons the Nanaimo District Islanders senior AA boys have had over the past several years. The Isles have a big team, they have skilled players and they have depth, and opponents are starting to notice – Nanaimo District is ranked No. 9 on the Island.
“They’re excited, that’s the best thing of all. We have people that are happy to play basketball,” said new coach Eric D’Andrea. Athletic Grade 10 guard Tyus Barfoot will be the catalyst of the offence, complemented by veteran scoring forwards Aidan Goodall and Eric Lindsay. Big post player Chris Martin will give opponents matchup problems. Guards Owen Simpson and Peter Le Patezour
are two other contributors. “I don’t think basketball’s been their main sport,” said D’Andrea of his roster. “We’d like to do as well as we could. Our expectations, they’re appropriate right now, but hopefully higher soon.” The Islanders play their home opener Jan. 8 when they face the Barsby Blazers at 7 p.m. at the Nanaimo District Secondary School gym.

NDSS GIRLS It might be a transition year for the NDSS Islanders, but they’ve shown signs they’ll be competitive and win some games this year. The Isles senior AA girls have a new coach and not a lot of returnees from last season. “They’re a young
group – they all need to learn to jell,” said Mike Lundine, coach of the NDSS senior girls. Point guard Maddy Dawson has good basketball smarts and fundamentals and will be a key player. Veteran Pauline Dawson is a good shooter and
WELLINGTON BOYS The Wellington Wildcats possess size, skill and depth, and they’ll be daunting in the senior AA boys’ league. The ’Cats return most of their starters from last year, when they placed seventh at Islands, and have better depth. Early this year they are ranked sixth on the Island. “Our key is our height,” said Glenn Johnson, Wildcats coach. “We want to pound the ball inside and control the boards on both ends. If we do that, we’ll be a fairly tough team to beat.” Aaron Copley is the go-to guy in the post, where he scores and rebounds and also blocks shots. Brad Jenks, another veteran forward, is a good shooter and will also pull down rebounds, and veteran guard Dustin Olsen brings energy and smarts at both ends of the court. New addition Tyler Radelja can score both inside and out and might be the team’s best defender, while Dylan Dorsey, another Grade 11, will score points in the post. “We have a solid team,” said Johnson. “We’ll be better and better as the year goes on.” The next league game for the Wellington senior AA boys is Jan. 8 when it visits the Woodlands Eagles at 7 p.m.
Morgan Reid, another vet, will also be looked to for steady play. New addition Danya Nieman is the team’s best defender and another newcomer, Natasha Jensen, should be able to contribute even though she’s only in Grade 9. “Tough defence, hard

work, rebounding – those are the keys for us,” said Lundine. “We have a very athletic team, a very fit team so the offence, I hope, will take care of itself.” The next home game for the Islanders is Jan. 8 against the Ladysmith ’49ers at 5 p.m. at the NDSS gym.

CEDAR BOYS The Cedar Spartans senior AA boys play with a lot of emotion, which should serve them well over a short, intense basketball season. The team doesn’t have a ton of depth, but it has a versatile roster that will be able to score both in the paint and outside. Coach Jarryd Engevik said he’d still like his team to get better at the other end of the court, though. “We’re all right defensively, we just need to work on our defensive rebounding,” he said. Tall post player Josh Lancaster will be relied upon for offence and will also be looked to for blocking and rebounding. Other primary scorers will be forward Justin Engevik and shooting guard Eric Sackey. Kyle Wolfe will man the point. The coach said if the players show better commitment to attending practice, they have a chance at a good playoff run. “I think we can achieve that if we’re all working hard and we get all our guys out…” he said. “When they are there, I like who we’ve got.” Cedar’s next league game is Jan. 8 at Ladysmith Secondary School.
WOODLANDS BOYS For the Woodlands Eagles to be successful, they will need to get as much as they can out of every guy on the team. The senior AA boys’ basketball team doesn’t have much depth with just a nine-man roster. It poses challenges – the players will have to be well-conditioned and positionally sound on defence so they don’t pile up too many fouls. “Coaching-wise, we have to take smart timeouts, let the kids rest,” said Franjo Crnkovic, Woodlands coach. But he added that players will also have to dig deep. “It’s mental. If you say you’re tired, you’re tired,” he said. The Eagles are dependent on star Bryson Cox, a swingman who was the city’s highest-scoring basketball player in 2011-12 and will be expected to repeat the feat this season. Forward Aaron Halsall is a contributor at both ends of the court and Jordan Murray will be the starting point guard. Crnkovic said a lot of players on the team have the green light to shoot, and said he stresses a team atmosphere. “If one guy doesn’t do their role, whether it’s talking on the bench or diving for the ball, we’re not going to win the game,” he said. The next home game for the Woodlands Eagles is Jan. 8 when they take on the Wellington Wildcats at 7 p.m. WOODLANDS GIRLS

T h e Wo o d l a n d s Eagles senior AA girls have a lot of pieces in place to have success, but they still have to work to fit it all together. “The team is coming together very well, certainly quicker than I expected us to. We’re a work in progress,” said Carl Macdonald, the team’s coach. Forward Michelle Berti is the Eagles’ top player at both ends of the court and also provides veteran leadership. Valeen Jules is a key contributor at point guard, T.J. Andjelkovic is a scorer in the post and Natasha
Mayer on the wing is another leader. “We’re going to have to rely on more people to contribute for us to be successful against the stronger teams,” Macdonald said. Right now, he said, a lot of girls are able to contribute a basket or two. “But that doesn’t get you a lot of points; therefore, we’re going to have to stop other teams.” Next action for the Woodlands girls is tonight (Dec. 20) when they visit the Wellington Secondary School gym to face the Wildcats in a 5 p.m. tipoff.

CEDAR GIRLS Cedar’s senior girls were one of two Nanaimo teams to qualify for provincials last year, but getting back will be much more difficult in 2012-13. For one, the Spartans have moved up to senior AA after competing in the senior A league last year. It’s also a younger team
– coach Daryl Rodgers said sometimes the starting lineup consists of three Grade 10s and two Grade 11s. “We’re still trying to learn what we’re doing on offence. It takes a little while,” he said. “So the more games we can play, the better.” Stefanie Talboys,
a guard, and Marika Grubac, a post player, are two of the go-to players on offence and guard Kelsey Hutt is another key player. Veteran post player Hailey Bradley is a strong defender. The team started its regular season with two losses, but both those games came down to the final minutes,
with Cedar losing by six points each time. “Hopefully by the end we can give some of these teams that we’re losing to by six a run for their money in the playoffs. That’s our goal,” Rodgers said. Cedar hosts the Wellington Wildcats on Jan. 8 in a 5 p.m. tipoff.

BARSBY BOYS Football school or not, these guys can ball. John Barsby Community Secondary School is expected to floor one of its most competitive senior AA boys’ basketball teams in recent memory. “We’ve been able to build the program over the last few years so that we’re not really starting from scratch every year now,” said Kirstin Polz, coach of the Blazers. The key addition this year is Mert Seymen, an exchange student from Turkey who has basketball smarts and skill. Along with veteran swingman Austin Lyle, the Blazers will have a better rounded offence. D av i d Wo r k i s another leader, Kyle Vollet is a strong defender in the paint and Shawn Arabsky and Duc Truong are other contributors. “In past years we have just been a scrappy team that would work hard, but this year we have more skill with the same intensity and work ethic,” Polz said. The Blazers’ next league game in Nanaimo is Jan. 15 when they visit the Cedar Spartans for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.

BARSBY GIRLS The Barsby Blazers senior AA girls won’t look only to the scoreboard to measure their success. The Blazers have some good athletes, but they don’t have a lot of basketball experience and many players don’t have a lot of experience playing team sports, either, s a i d c o a ch C r a i g LeTourneau. So aside from the fundamentals, they’re also working on team play, and they’re making strides in both areas. “What we’re trying to instil is being positive and doing something individually out there that is going to improve them each game and each practice,” LeTour neau said. “And how can we improve as a team, to take a step forward?” Guards Carly Malinski and Brianna WyseSeward will be two of the key players. Taylor Sampson brings leadership and aggressive defence and Kaitlin Ovcharov will contribute at both ends of the court. Barsby visits Cedar Jan. 15 at 5 p.m.

Nanaimo homeowners want to share their holiday spirit with all residents. It’s Christmas time and the News Bulletin is pleased to once again provide a map of the results of the Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce residential light-up contest.
With nominations in hand, judges braved the cold temperatures Monday to choose the houses that best exhibit holiday spirit. Remember, locations are general, so a city road map might be a good idea to guide you to the displays.

A BIG CHRISTMAS BOUQUET to M&J Tree Services for quick service and a big job well done. We definitely recommend them. A HEARTY THANK YOU to the young volunteer who gives up part of every weekend to come and keep Chase River Estuary Park clean, safe and usable. He is always pleasant and cordial no matter how much trash and waste some of the public have left behind for him to pick up. Once more, we the locals thank you.
A HUGE THANKS to those Nanaimo residents who have spent so much time, money and energy on Christmas light displays. The city looks so beautiful at night.
&
A BOUQUET to the recycling crew, who leave my empty bin upside down in rainy weather so it doesn't fill with water. Your extra effort is appreciated.
TRUCK LOADS OF FOOD AND MONEY to those organizations working to make life better for the low-income individuals and families in our community. If you can afford to donate to these groups, please do so.
A THANK YOU BOUQUET to Kelly from Home Outfitters for helping two seniors get their rebate. Excellent customer service by this individual. A GREAT BIG BOUQUET to the teachers and staff at Coal Tyee Elementary School. I had the privilege of attending their annual Christmas concert and just wanted to say how enjoyable it was. The teachers, students and staff did a wonderful job.
A BIG THANK YOU to all who made the Randerson Ridge Craft Fair a huge success: Quality Foods, Signs Now, Hornby's Canopy, Canadian Tire, Sysco Foods, Tim Hortons, McDonald's and all the wonderful crafters and parent volunteers.
A HAPPY CHRISTMAS to everyone who displays their Christmas lights and decorations for the enjoyment of everyone.
A LIFETIME OF BEAUTIFUL BOUQUETS to the kind and helpful individuals who helped save my life recently after a diving accident in Nanoose. Without the quick response of many, I may not have lived to thank you. Words cannot describe how grateful I am to you all. Wishing all of you a safe and happy holiday.
A BOUQUET OF BLESSINGS to careful and courteous drivers. May you always be safe on the roads.
q
BOUQUETS AND MANY THANKS to the city for plowing the snow off the E&N trailway between Northfield and Bowen roads in time for our morning walk. A GIANT BOUQUET OF PURPLE IRISES to Allan, the courtesy vehicle driver for Harris Kia. Allan is the best driver ever. He's punctual, courteous, entertaining and always a pleasure to ride with. I'm also grateful to Mike and Kolbi in service and Terry in parts. Your honest, pleasant help makes paying for repair time a little less painful.
A BOUQUET to the houses on Sam's Way. Every year they go the extra mile to brighten up our neighbourhood at Christmas time.

A HEARTFELT THANK YOU AND A BOUQUET OF POINSETTIAS to Marianne and the kitchen elves for serving a delicious turkey dinner at the Nanaimo Ecumenical Centre on Spartan Road. The dinner was for the elderly clients and volunteers of the Nanaimo Seniors Visiting Society. Thanks also to the band – Second Wind – for providing the entertainment, and to the members of the "Crafty Workers" a group from the Nanaimo Harbour City Seniors. This group helped raise funds for the NSVS by setting up a craft sale table and organizing a silent auction.

A BIG FROZEN BEEF F to the coldhearted turkey thieves who stole from the Eagles Hall. It doesn't get much lower than that. Time to reevaluate your life. A SMELLY EGGNOG to the person on the bus who stole one of my bags. And shame on those who watched. Truly the Grinch still lives.
A BOUQUET to the city for quickly cleaning our streets after our first snow storm.
A BEEF F to the increase in costs to recycle yard waste. All that does is make a better argument for people to dump their clippings down a back road or in a ditch. Putting up with the lineups on a weekend is bad enough. Now having to pay more for doing the 'right' thing just turns a person off. A BEEF F to anyone who doesn't wash their hands after going to the bathroom, but especially to the guys who make eye contact with you in the mirror when they're leaving the public washroom after not washing their hands, as if to say, 'I know you know I didn't wash my hands after going to the bathroom and I'm OK with that.' A HUGE BEEF F equipped with a bright set of flashing lights to those at city hall who have decided that no traffic lights are needed on Mary Ellen Drive in order to get across five lanes of traffic between Woodgrove Centre and Woodgrove Crossing. This location has, in one direction, vehicles exiting or approaching the Parkway and, on the other, the Island Highway. Others are attempting to get across Mary Ellen Drive or are making turns. It's an accident waiting to happen.
A BEEF. How can the city require homeowners keep sidewalks clear after they plow 1.2 metres of snow from the street onto the sidewalk? Is there some magical wand that makes snow disappear that I don't know about?
This Week’s Winner LYLA MCLEAN wins a bouquet from Turley’s Florist.

A LONG-STANDING BEEF F to people who continue to abuse and insult actions by members of the RCMP P. Members get involved in situations that most of us would either deliberately ignore or run away from. They put themselves at risk on a daily basis to deal with whatever they encounter. This is not to say that the RCMP is faultless – what national organization is – but without the willingness of members to protect the public, life would be very different.

A CHRISTMAS BOUQUET to the generous woman in Wal-Mart who remembers how financially difficult life with little children can be at this time of year and surprised me with money to alleviate some stress for my family this Christmas. In addition to some unanticipated expenses, I have been dealing with loss this December and your kindness warmed my heart. Please know how grateful I am. One day I will pay it forward in your honour.

Just after midnight on Tuesday, Nov. 27, a lone male smashed his way through the outer doors of The Bay at Woodgrove Centre Multiple break-in alarms were activated and the RCMP were on scene within minutes. Police later examined surveillance cameras which showed only the one male entering then exiting the business. Within three minutes, the male, using a pry bar, smashed through the exterior doors then made his way to the lower level, There, he smashed open six display cases and took a large amount of jewelry worth thousands of dollars. Investigators believe a green Nissan Quest van seen earlier in the mall parking lot might be associated to the break-in.

Crime prevention is the responsibility of everyone. Thieves unfortunately do not buy into this theory, especially at this time of the year, but incorporating simple but effective tips will not only reduce the risk of being a victim of crime, but also make a home and community safer. Nanaimo RCMP released their top 10 crime prevention tips of 2012. ◆ Report suspicious activity to the police. The police need your help in solving crime. ◆ Be aware of your surroundings and always be alert. Many crimes could easily be averted if people recognized the early warning signs. ◆ Target harden your home. Look at it as if you were a criminal. Remove and eliminate opportunities to break in. ◆ Keep your property clean. It shows ownership and criminals will shy away from it. ◆ Have a monitored alarm installed. ◆ Lock your doors. Fifty per cent of all car break-ins and the majority of home break-ins are through unlocked doors and windows. ◆ Keep valuables in your car out of sight. The old adage, out of sight out of mind, applies here. ◆ Carry only what you need in your purse and wallet. ◆ Get to know your neighbours. Join or start a Block Watch. Go to www.blockwatch.com to learn more. ◆ Do not provide any personal information to anyone who contacts you by phone or e-mail.
