Christmas Fire Prevention
Some steps to take to make sure your holidays don’t go up in smoke Submitted
Holiday lighting displays are a beloved holiday tradition. Many families enjoy illuminating their homes with decorative lights, and some communities even reward the household that goes above and beyond with their holiday lighting display. But as enjoyable and
eye-catching as such displays can be, they also can be equally as dangerous. Hanging lights carries a certain degree of risk, and it’s best for homeowners to be as cautious as possible when erecting their holiday lighting displays. Start with the lights. Inspecting the lights is an important part of creating a safe holiday

lighting display, and this inspection should occur before you begin decorating. Examine each string of lights for damaged wires, including any loose connections or broken sockets. Discard any damaged sets before decorating. If your inspection turns up any burned out bulbs, always replace the older bulbs with new bulbs of the same wattage. In the past, a good rule of thumb was to limit each extension cord to no more than three sets of lights. However, if using LED bulbs, which consume
as much as 90 percent less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs, you can have more sets connected to a single extension cord. After inspecting the lights, inspect the other tools you will be using. Make sure the ladder is sturdy and that your staple gun and other tools are ready to be used. If any tools fail your inspection, delay the decorating until you can find adequate replacements. Only decorate in the daytime. Sunlight can be sparse during the holi-

day season, when the sun goes down before many working men and women leave their offices much less arrive home. But decorating at night is asking for trouble, so make time to decorate during the daytime. Decorating during the day makes it easier to see potentially problematic power lines, and the weather likely won’t be as harsh during the daytime as it will be at night, reducing your risk for injury. Never decorate alone. When decorating, always have someone nearby in case of emergency. Falling from a ladder can cause serious harm, but having someone there to hold the ladder can reduce your risk of falling. In addition, a decorating partner can contact emergency personnel should you suffer an injury and become unable to reach the telephone. Trim trees before decorating. Winter might not be the ideal time to trim trees, but streaming lights on overgrown trees could pose a significant safety risk. A tree that hasn’t been trimmed might have grown close to power lines. When that tree is covered in holiday lights, contact with the

If you’re worried about trimming a tree outside of its recommended trimming season, do not decorate that tree with any lights. Strategically place

lights. Lights should never conceal a window, and the cords should never be run across walkways or steps. Lights that are strewn across a window pose a safety hazard should a fire occur at the home and window escape is needed. Cords that have been run across walkways and steps pose a tripping hazard, especially if a light snowfall makes it difficult for family members or guests to see the cords on the ground. Make sure the lights are not on when no one is home. Lights should never be on when no one is home. This poses a significant safety risk, and no homeowner wants to arrive home to see their house has burned down or suffered damage from a fire. In addition, turn the lights off before you go to sleep at night. This makes the home safer at night and will save you a substantial amount of money.

RBC donates $20,000 for hospital wheelchairs Submitted
This health care item may not receive huge accolades for the work it does but a hospital without a wheelchair would be in a very difficult situation. The East Kootenay Regional Hospital has a brigade of wheelchairs but wear and tear and sometimes just missing in action the fleet at the hospital needed a bit of a cheer up and increase in the number of wheelchairs presently on site. “I was attending an
Operations Committee meeting a few weeks ago and the subject of wheelchairs came up. There was an active discussion about how wonderful it would be if more chairs could be available. As a foundation our role is to link a need to someone with a belief in that cause. With that in mind I put in a call to a very special donor,” said Donna Grainger, EKFH Executive Director. With grace, the Royal Bank’s RBC Foundation accepted the call and Jennifer Cabeldu,
Manager of Donations for RBC couldn’t have been more helpful. An original request of $10,000 was actually doubled with an approved gift of $20,000 soon to be heading to EKFH to build the wheelchair fleet. Maureen Foxworthy, RBC Branch Manager for Cranbrook explains, “The welfare of the residents in our community is something RBC keeps in mind when making charitable gifts. Gifts for Gardeners
Most of us are getting to the end of the list for holiday shopping, but there are always some people on it where it seems to be extremely difficult to get that perfect Christmas present. Are you still at a loss what to get the gardeners in your life? Do not despair. There is sure to be something at your local garden centre for any gardener, from the plant fanatic to the weekend warrior. How about packing a basket of goodies? It starts with the basket - you can fill a garden tote or durable plastic tub that will come in handy to hold anything from from weeding, deadheading and pruning debris to raked leaves and harvested produce. Or you could fill an attractive clay or tin pot that can shine on a patio or porch in the summer. For a more rustic look, just grab a burlap sack - it’s an inexpensive container and will serve well at harvest time or to wrap cedars and other shrubs for the winter. As for what to put in the basket, your imagination is the limit, but there are a few core items that will be sure to delight any gardener, no matter how experienced. Sturdy, high-quality, well-designed tools are probably one of the most needed and appreciated gifts you can give any gardener. There is always use for another trowel, planter or pruner. There are tools made for specific gardeners, such as ergonomically formed devices that can ease arthritis or back pain and reduce the risk of repetitive strain injuries. Another gardening essential is a pair or two of wellmade gloves. Many gardeners have several pairs of gloves, each of them for a specific task. One guideline is to look for gloves with a durable rubber coating or leather pads covering the palms for protection when digging or lifting, as well as nice and light, durable and breathable fabric covering the back. Gloves make great stocking stuffers as well and so do other gardening gadgets, such as twine or wire twists for holding up vines and floppy perennials or even elegant plant markers. For many gardeners, the seed package, taped to a stick or a small, handscribbled tag will do, but they surely will appreciate a more permanent solution with an elegant terra cotta or metal plant tag. Another item that can be both decorative and functional is an old-fashioned watering can. They come in many bright colours and when not in use can be an attractive addition to any yard and garden. Kneelers or kneeling pads can make a fashion statement with cute designs while serving the gardener beautifully, easing some of the discomfort from long periods of weeding or planting. Why not add some colour and life to your basket with a flowering houseplant or amaryllis bulb. Through the winter months, gardeners sometimes get a case of winter blues as they are looking at their snow-covered flower beds and vegetable patches. What better gift to brighten up a dark winter day than a flowering plant? Amaryllis bulbs deliver great reward with spectacular blooms in all different colours, and they are a no-fuss project in any home. There is always a gardener who has everything, but no panic, there are great gifts for them as well. How about a beautiful gardening book, a new sun hat, an elegant vase to hold flowers from their garden or an ornament, bird bath, fountain or fire pit to compliment their yard? And don’t forget that successful gardeners can produce a plentiful harvest each season and many of them are also accomplished cooks and canners. There are many kitchen tools now that make the process of preserving fruit and vegetables a lot easier. Cherry pitters, apple corers and corn kernel strippers will save you hours of cutting, dicing and slicing. Love the taste of homegrown garlic in your food, but hate the smell that can linger on your hands for days? Inventive garlic presses and cutters can save the day. And peels and other scraps can go into a stylish countertop composter. Before becoming desperate, come to the garden centre for inspiration and last-minute gift ideas and maybe a stocking stuffer or two for yourself. Till next time… happy holidays. Submitted by Kerstin

Tamarack Centre draws Christmas contest winner
PHOTO YVES MICHAUD
Congratulations are in order for nine-year-old Jordan Havens, who just won the Kootenay Advertiser’s Christmas colouring contest. For her skill and good fortune, Jordan has received a kid’s Christmas gift pack full of special treats and toys. Jordan’s finely coloured entry was among dozens received at the Kootenay Advertiser office and we thank all those who entered and graced our walls with their art.
The Tamarack Centre’s Twelve Days of Christmas Grand Prize Contest wrapped up on Saturday December 15th at 2:30 p.m. Twelve semi-finalists “competed” for a chance to win $1,000 Shopping Spree. The twelve contestant names were drawn randomly and each person had to select a gift bag or “steal” one from the

other contestants. When everyone had selected or “stole” their gift the semi-finalists were then allowed to open their present. The big reveal came as customers and loved ones cheered. The Grand Prize winner was Donna Meszarosi who was elated as the first gift bag she chose was “stolen” and she was forced to choose a second. To her surprise and to the other finalists she chose wisely! The same thing happened to the winner of the $500 gift pack. Samantha Millard’s first gift bag was also snatched and she had to reselect and picked up the second prize. The ten remaining finalists each took home a $100 gift card to a Tamarack Centre merchant. The Tamarack Centre would like to thank customers for their patronage and wishes everyone a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Keep Your Holidays From Going Up in Flames!
When most people think about the holidays, family festivities and good cheer likely come to mind. What few of us consider is that the holidays also present an increased risk of home fires. Home fires during the holiday season often involve cooking, Christmas trees, candles and holiday decorations. By taking some preventative steps and following simple rules of thumb, most home fires can be prevented during the holidays and beyond. For many great fire safety tips around Christmas trees, candles and holiday cooking, please visit our website. Have a fire safe and happy holiday season!

A safe holiday is a happy holiday Make safety a priority this holiday season with these simple tips: • Never kick or hit your meter if ice builds up. Call us for assistance at 1-888-224-2710. • After a snowfall, brush snow away from your meters by hand and clear a path for the safety of our meter readers. • Around your fireplace, consider using a hearth safety gate to help protect small children from the heated glass. Celebrations Built in 1947 but still a good reliable ride. Headlights permanently in low position, rear and front end requires little to no maintenance. Upholstery not bad for its extended age, engine runs great but does burn oil, hard on fuel at times. To view this old classic and maybe watch it perform, please come to the Eagles Lounge at 3 pm, Sun., Dec. 23
