Consider gifts that entertain By Barb Brouwer

MARKET NEWS STAff

There are just three days left in which to buy Christmas gifts for the special people in our lives. While there are many great gift-buying opportunities in Salmon Arm, if your loved ones already have all the material items they need or want, why not give the gift of entertainment. The snow may be falling, but you can put summer into someone’s heart with the purchase of tickets to the annual Roots and Blues Festival – and you don’t even need to go outside to do it. Visit www.rootsandblues.ca to order them. The Salmon Arm Folk Music Society’s Roots and Blues Festival office will be closed Dec. 20 to Jan. 7, after which, tickets may be purchased by calling 250-833-4096. Special earlybird member pricing is in effect until February. By buying a $10 membership you can vote at the

Jan. 16 AGM and purchase up to four tickets at tremendous savings over gate prices. Ticket prices for the Aug. 2013 musiclovers’ feast vary, with savings for seniors and youths. Children under 12 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Or, for the film fan in your world, consider a six-movie pass from the Salmar theatres. The tickets never expire and you will get six tickets for the price of five. They are available at Salmar Grand Cinemas, The Salmar Classic, The Movie Company, Lucky’s in Centenoka Park Mall and Earth Art Studio off the Ross Street parking lot. Just available in time for Christmas gift-giving are tickets to the always sold-out Shuswap Trail Party and Fundraiser that supports local greenways and trails. Rocking out Friday, Feb. 1, the annual event features a large silent auction, locally sourced

and prepared appies, a cash bar hosted by the Salmon Arm Fire Department, loads of photos from another year of trail projects throughout the Shuswap, and a whole lot of music, dancing and merriment. And for those who indulge in too much liquid merriment, rides home will be available by donation. Scarecrow’s back to pack the dance floor and talented Mike Shaver and Steph Webster of a Million Dollars in Pennies have been added to

the entertainment slate. Tickets to the deepwinter social are available at Lakeside Insurance, Salmon Arm Financial, Skookum Cycle and Ski, Ridetech and Kula Movement and Wellness. Another gift option is to create an entertainment “savings” account, a cash gift earmarked for some of the great entertainment opportunities that will be provided by local talents and visiting performers in the year ahead.

Talking about tragedy essential The horror of the mass murder at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., will resonate for some time to come. The fact the killer targeted 20 little boys and girls among his victims only lends more gravity to the incident. The shooting spree was the worst ever committed in an elementary school in the United States and was, as President Barack Obama noted as he spoke in Newtown on Sunday, Dec. 16, the fourth such mass shooting at a school during his four years in the White House. While Americans continue to debate gun control and try to explain why their country alone is plagued with so many repeat incidents, the rest of us are left to determine how to explain such horror to our kids. On Friday, Dec. 17, many schools in the district put out a letter for students to take home. The letter makes assurances about school safety protocols, encourages parents and guardians to protect elementary-aged children from exposure to news media images and stories relating to the shooting, and provides advice on how to listen and watch for signs your child might need support. The advice is sound and it comes from experts in the field. While it may be advisable, as the memo stated, to limit your child’s exposure to social media and news about the Newtown mass murder, we would hope teachers are adopting an open-ear policy for students who wish to talk about the tragedy and ask questions. Yes, it is terrifying, but we can all help place everything in perspective. -Kamloops This Week

McMurtry’s Christmas goose Last week I took part in the annual Fair Exchange of Gifts Benefit Concert for people in need at this time of year. It is my privilege to be a part of such a worthy event. A number of people had asked if I would tell my McMurtry’s Christmas Goose story at the concert. The musical arrangement had already been put together and I was unable to fit the story in, so I would like to offer it here in written form. Oh yeah, by the way, Merry Christmas – one and all. Robert McMurtry stood looking out over his pastures – looking for any of his sheep that may have separated from the herd. He began walking along the fence line. With him was his faithful canine compaion Mac, a mean and miserable looking old border collie-cross. Mac disliked all other dogs, barely tolerated people, and was seldom far from McMurtry’s side. Robert McMurtry was a solitary sort, a sheep farmer who kept to himself and spoke to few. Somewhere

The GreaT OuTdOOrs James Murray along the line he had come to the conclusion that if you spend enough time in the company of a good dog, you don’t need to spend nearly so much time around people. A light snow started to fall. It was Christmas Eve morning – a fact that had not escaped McMurtry’s memory... or his thoughts. McMurtry had come to know loneliness in a way that few men have. He stopped and stood looking out into the distance, beyond the pastures and his property line, past the hills that stretched beyond the purple grey horizon, to a time and place long ago. He had not noticed that the snow was coming down harder. Nor did he notice that Mac had turned the sheep from the pasture to-

ward the barns. Nor did he notice the pair of Canada geese pecking at the thin crust of snow on the edge of a small pond. With the sheep now heading toward the shelter of the barn by themselves, Mac turned dutifully towards his master who still stood looking out into the distance. An impatient bark jarred McMurtry from his thoughts. His mind’s eye began to focus on the pond before him. For the first time he became aware of the two geese. He could not help but wonder why they had not flown south with the great flocks that had honked their way across the autumn skies last fall. He turned and followed Mac back toward the house. When the two geese showed up in the yard a couple of hours later, McMurtry was, to say the very least, somewhat surprised. Must have followed him in, he thought to himself. He looked at their footprints in the snow. They had walked the whole way. The sight of the two was almost as amusing as it was bewildering. McMur-

try was less amused though when he noticed the one bird’s wings were damaged. At some point or other it had been shot. The flight feathers appeared fine, but the wound had healed over in a way that rendered the bird flightless. McMurtry scoffed to himself. He had nothing against hunters, just against stupid ones. What really got him, though, was the fact that the bird appeared quite capable of flight. It had chosen to remain with its mate. When the pair followed him right into the barn, McMurtry laughed out loud. He laid out several bails of alfalfa for the sheep, and then, threw down a pail full of seed for the chickens. The geese were quick to respond. Two more mouths to feed won’t matter that much, he thought to himself. And then, on a cold and snowy Christmas Eve, Robert McMurtry found himself wishing a “Merry Christmas” to two of God’s creatures that apparently cared more for each other than a lot of people do.

Make concerns known What kind of government favours selling out the long-term sustainability of its own country’s natural resources, the long-term health of its environment, the health and employment opportunities of its people to provide in-house jobs through refinement and manufacturing? For what reason? For short-term economic gain? What about the long-term costs to exporting jobs, environmental clean-up after the fact? What kind of a government ignores the expressions of concern and requests for public and parliamentary consultation by tens of thousands of Canadians in regards to the Nexen Oil sell-out to stateowned Chinese Oil corporation CNOOC? What kind of government also refuses public consultation and/or parliamentary debate on the final ratification of a foreign trade protection treaty or FIPA with China? This pending treaty will lock Canada into a contract for an unprecedented 31 years with China, providing unprecedented access to Canadian raw resources and unprecedented power to secretively sue Canadians at any level of government or organization for block-

age of access to these resources or the ecosystem holding them. What kind of a government systematically prepares for such invasive foreign investment by first watering down environmental and endangered species protection laws, slashing environmental protection policy, scientific monitoring capabilities and departments like the Pacific Coast Guard? What kind of a government refuses to learn from the pitfalls of the NAFTA treaty with the U.S.; a treaty already costing taxpayers in legal fees and payouts for Canadian governments refusing access to natural resources and sensitive ecosystems that are suddenly threatened by foreign exploitation? The answer to all the above questions would be the Harper-led, Conservative government, a government looking and feeling more and more like a dictatorship as each day passes with their refusal to engage parliamentary debate and their behind-thescenes, purposeful policy changes and deregulation around environmental protection and monitoring. This government is dragging tens of

thousands of Canadians against their will, in the opposite direction to most civilized, environmentally conscientious countries. Is that what you want as a Canadian? What can Canadians do to take back their power to self determine; to provide for the safe and healthy future of their children and grandchildren? We can write to Prime Minister Steven Harper and our local Conservative member of Parliament to let them know that we don’t feel they are acting in the best interest of our country or our people and that they won’t have our vote in the next election. Copy your letters to leaders and representatives of all political parties and government. Make it an election issue in B.C. as well. Support organizations like the Council of Canadians, David Suzuki Foundation and Leadnow.ca. There is nothing up front or honest about the federal Conservative government and it is time for Canadians to take back the destiny of this country. Do it for your children and their children, please.

South ShuSwap Board supports Sorrento study

Support: CSRD will ask province to fund incorporation review. By Barb Brouwer

MARKET NEWS STAff

Columbia Shuswap Regional District directors voted unanimously to send another letter to the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development to reaffirm its support for the Sorrento and Area Community Association’s request for an incorporation study grant. Area C South Shuswap director Paul Demenok told directors at the Dec. 7 board meeting in Salmon Arm that, following a discussion with Shuswap MLA George Abbott, he had written a letter to Bill Bennett, minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development as a followup to a letter the late Ted Bacigalupo had sent a year ago. “I have been asked by the Sorrento and Area Community Association to follow up on this matter and to indicate that I also support the request to fund the Sorrento Incorporation study,” he wrote in his Oct. 30 letter to the

minister. “Could you kindly update me as to your ministry’s progress in your analysis of this funding request?” Demenok advised CSRD directors that he is still waiting for an official response from province. In response to a question from Area D director René Talbot on how big a community needs to be in order to incorporate, chief administrative officer Charles Hamilton advised there are incorporated municipalities with as few as 200 residents. He said studies are undertaken to determine if there is a sufficient tax base to support what residents need and want. Area E Rural Sicamous director Rhona Martin suggested that with some municipalities now relying on government grants as their sole source of funding, the ministry might be taking a closer look. “I think they’d be looking at things with a lot more detail to see how successful they’d

Spread joy, not germs Living WEll For many the holiday season means a time to enjoy good company and good food. As we spread the joy of the season, we need to be extra careful to not spread food-borne illness causing bacteria. These simple food safety tips will help you prepare a safe and tasty holiday meal: Store and thaw safely: Keep fresh turkey refrigerated no longer than three days before cooking. There are three ways to thaw frozen turkey in its wrapper: • Under cold running water (one hour per pound) • In a clean sink full of cold water, changing the water every couple of hours • In the fridge (five hours per pound) • Thawing poultry at room temperature is not recommended because it allows harmful bacteria to grow. • Keep other items, especially those with meat, seafood, dairy, eggs or other moist, protein-rich foods chilled until served. Clean carefully: Wash your hands,

utensils and work surfaces well before prep work begins. Once the preparation work is done, clean surfaces in hot soapy water, rinse, then sanitize. Sanitizing can be done with a diluted bleach solution (30 ml of bleach per gallon of water) that is allowed to sit for two minutes. Wash your hands well after cleaning the cutting board and before and after working with any new menu items. Avoid cross contamination: Store raw meat away from food that is ready-to-eat, including fruit and vegetables (and be sure to wash these thoroughly before serving). Turkeys should be wrapped well and stored on the lowest shelf of your fridge or in the meat keeper to keep blood and juices from contaminating other food. Ensure only clean utensils and cutting boards are used. Use a separate cutting board to prepare raw meat. Wash hands after handling any raw foods and minimize hand

contact during final preparation steps. Cook well: For turkey, set the oven at no lower than 350 °F (177 °C) and cook for about 20 minutes per pound. Use a good meat thermometer to measure the turkey’s in-

ternal temperature and ensure it’s safe to eat. All parts of the bird including stuffing should be at least 165°F (74°C) when removed from the oven. Health Canada recommends an internal temperature of 185°F (85 °C) at the thickest

part of the meat as additional assurance. Check the temperature in several places to be sure. Cooked food should be kept at 140 °F (60 °C) while waiting to serve. Refrigerate: Chill food immediately after returning from the store and soon after dinner is complete. Perishable food should be placed in the refrigerator within two hours of being removed from the oven. Refrigerate at 40°F (4°C) or in a freezer at 0°F (-18 °C). Health Canada recommends refrigerating leftovers for no more then two to three days. Put them in the freezer in order to keep them longer. New navigable water laws cut red tape

From the hill Colin Mayes The Navigable Waters Protection Act (NWPA) was passed in Parliament in 1880, yes, 132 years ago. At that time, the purpose of the act was to ensure unobstructed watercraft access on Canada’s waterways. Of course, when this act was passed, people travelled by canoe, barge or sternwheeler. Commerce also relied on these waterways to move goods to market. Times have changed. The act regulated things on the water, not in the water or along the water course. Today this act has caused unnecessary red tape, and for years provinces and municipalities have

mental Protection Act, which provides guidelines for works in and around watercourses. The Opposition has used our proposed amendments to the act as a wedge, accusing our government of compromising the protection of the environment. This is completely false, and I can tell you we are committed to protecting our natural environment. Your government in Ottawa will continue to protect the environment in a logical

and effective way that balances the interests of all stakeholders in a responsible and sustainable manner. Finally, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities stated: “The changes announced today will allow local government to spend less time processing paperwork for small, low-risk public works projects by removing redundancies, red tape and project delays that result in higher costs for property tax payers.” I totally agree.

asked our government to cut the red tape associated with the Navigable Waters Protection Act. This act has created a black hole, holding up simple projects that do not impede navigation. Data from the Canadian Hydrographic Service’s nautical charts, Statistics Canada data on freight movement, and historical data from the Navigable Waters Protection Program was used to create a list of waterways that will be exempted from the application of the act. The installation of a simple culvert under a road previously triggered the need for an application for approval under the NWPA, which was time consuming and unnecessary. The amendments proposed to the act in no way compromise the need for an environmental assessment of works that take place around and in water. Poinsettia has historical roots Gaia GardeninG Margo Westaway

One of the Christmas traditions we all love is to own or give a beautiful poinsettia. I still catch myself calling it a ‘poinsetta,’ which is a hard habit to break from my childhood days when I couldn’t pronounce it properly. It had never occurred to me that this plant actually turned into something else until I visited a private garden in Kenya years ago and there before me stood a 12-foot high poinsettia tree! That was news to me, and I confess I haven’t learned much about them since. So I’ve dug out some more interesting points about the poinsettias. The poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) is a plant species of the diverse spurge family that is native to Mexico and (yet to be confirmed by botanists) in Nicaragua and Costa Rica. They are popular and widely grown in subtropical climates such as Australia, South America

and Africa. It derives its name from Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first U.S. Minister to Mexico, who introduced the plant in the states in 1825, which now celebrates a National Poinsettia Day on Dec. 12. It is a shrub or small tree, typically reaching a height of two to 16 feet, and to date there are more than 100 cultivated varieties. The plant bears dark green dentate leaves and the coloured bracts – which are most often flaming red, but can be orange, pale green, cream, pink, white or marbled — are often mistaken for flower petals because of their groupings and colours, but are actually leaves. The colours of the bracts are created through photoperiodism, meaning that they require darkness (12 hours at a time, for at least five days in a row) to change colour and at the same time, the plants require abundant light during the day for the brightest colour. The flowers of the poinsettia (cyathia), are grouped within small yellow structures found in the centre of each leaf bunch, but are unassuming and do not attract pollinators. The Aztecs used the plant to produce red dye and as an an-

tipyretic medication. Today it is known in Mexico and Guatemala as “Noche Buena,” meaning Christmas Eve. The plant’s association with Christmas began in 16th century Mexico, where legend tells of a young girl named Pepita who was too poor to provide a gift for the celebration of Jesus’ birthday, but instead was directed by an angel to gather weeds from the roadside and place them in front of the church altar. Crimson “blossoms” sprouted from the weeds and became beautiful poinsettias. From the 17th century, Franciscan friars in Mexico included the plants in their Christmas celebrations. The star-shaped leaf pattern is said to symbolize the Star of Bethlehem, and the red colour represents the blood sacrifice through the crucifixion of Jesus. In Spain it is known as “Flor de Pascua,” meaning “Easter flower,” and in both Chile and Peru, the plant became known as the “Crown of the Andes.” In 1900, a German immigrant named Albert Ecke landed in Los Angeles and started selling poinsettias. His son, Paul, developed the grafting technique, but it was the third

generation, Paul Ecke Jr., who advanced the association between the plant and Christmas. Until the 1990s, the Ecke family had a virtual monopoly on poinsettias by having created a bushier plant by grafting two varieties together. However, their method was eventually discovered and published, which allowed competitors to move in. Paul Ecke III decided to stop producing plants in the U.S., but, as of 2008, they still serve about 70 per cent of the domestic market and 50 per cent of the world market. With care, the poinsettia can be induced to ‘reflower’ after the initial display when

purchased. They prefer a well-lit room with moist but well-drained soil. Poinsettias are susceptible to several diseases, mostly fungal, but also bacterial and parasitic, and have a mild toxicity level. I kept one of these plants years ago and it grows like a tall bonsai by my kitchen window, still healthy and happy. Most of us keep them for the season, so when it ends, don’t just chuck it out in the garbage. Honour it by cutting it up and putting it into your compost so it can contribute to a healthy soil supply for this coming gardening season. Merry Christmas everyone.

n Salmon Arm SilverBacks’ forward Anthony Croston gets tied up going through the Centennials defence during the ’Backs 5-0 defeat Dec. 14 by Merritt at the Shaw Centre. This followed a defeat of the Penticton Vees two days earlier. Salmon Arm has a pair of games before Christmas. Today they play in West Kelowna and then host the Warriors Saturday, Dec. 22. Both games are 7 p.m. starts. In the new year, the SilverBacks take on Vernon at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4 and Cowichan at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5 – both at home.

South Canoe Trail Systems get facelift One of the region’s most popular recreational trail systems is getting a much-needed facelift. Work began last month to improve the South Canoe Trail System. Two new trails, new trail signs, and improved access at the trailhead will address the growing challenges of safety on the lower trails. Future work in 2013 includes funding for new signage. As well, planning with the city, the province, Secwepemc First Nations leadership, forestry tenure holders, the Salmon Arm Fish and Game Club, and local residents to decide on appropriate trail use south of the existing system

is pending. Long range plans also identify the desire to work with BC Ministry of Transportation to transform the gravel pit next to the trail system into a fully developed trailhead staging area and park. All trail users are invited to provide feedback on the South Canoe Trails and any other trail throughout the Shuswap to trailreport@shuswaptrails. com. The same email can be used to report maintenance issues, log volunteer time, or send a request to be added to the Shuswap Trails contact list.

Snowmobiling The Salmon Arm Snow Blazers meet the

second Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. in the back room of the Hideaway Pub in Salmon Arm. The meetings are open to anyone interesting in snowmobiling, joining the club or helping out with work

Christmas cheer Prior to the arrival of the CP Rail Holiday Train, the Chase Christmas pageant was a big hit. A great selection of holiday carols left many residents leaving filled with Christmas cheer. Damon Colgan, curator and archivist for the museum, deemed the event an overall success after the museum filled its seats with about 50 people eager to see the festivities. “We had most of the acts show up except one who was sick...,” said Colgan, who said the entertainment was fantastic. Some of the entertainment included Elena Markin and the Silver Belles & Beaux, but the highlight of the night for many were the boys from the Chase Heat who wowed the crowd with a number of carols, including Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. “This was definitely a high point in

the event,” says Colgan. “I had heard they’d been practising and they really did a great job.” The team took to the stage wearing their signature jerseys and Santa hats and introduced themselves before beginning their performance. This was the first year for the event, says Colgan, and he’s not sure if it will be held again next year. He explains there are currently no exhibits in the museum, so organizers wanted to try something they couldn’t do in other years. Colgan didn’t have the total figure raised available, but he believes the event, which has been in the planning since the beginning of the month, was a great success. “We would like to thank everybody that took part in the event and for all of the performances; we were also very pleased with the turnout from the community.”

Break and enters On Dec. 14 about 4:30 a.m., two oncoming tractor-trailer units collided on Highway 1, about five kilometres east of Chase. The impact landed both vehicles in the ditch on opposite sides of the highway. The driver as well as the passenger of the eastbound unit were not hurt, while the driver of the westbound unit was transported to Kamloops’ Royal Inland Hospital with serious injuries. The collision is under investigation by Chase RCMP. Police report the highway was extremely slippery and the road

Chase RCMP received reports of four break and enters to residences on SquilaxAnglemont Road from Scotch Creek to Anglemont recently, as well as a number of gas thefts. Added to the list are a number of businesses that were broken into. They include the Home Hardware in Scotch Creek, as well as the area’s Super Valu which had one of their storage containers broken into and some food items stolen. No suspects had been identified at press time and it was unknown whether the break and enters have been com-

mitted by the same individuals. The investigation is continuing. “We advise communities to get together and form a neighborhood watch or citizens on patrol group for those overnight hours,” says Sgt. Gary Heebner of the Chase RCMP. He encourages people to get alarm systems installed or some form of video surveillance. “Video surveillance is the best means of catching people but the picture also has to be clear and high resolution. Also we need to see the face clearly,” he explains. “While someone in the community might be able to identify a person based on a photo of their back, it will not stand up in court.”

Drive below speed limit in poor weather Travellers are being asked to slow down and consider winter driving conditions, for it could be a matter of life and death. As the winter season is gearing up and the snow is falling down, Chase RCMP would like to remind those taking to the roads to be extremely cautious. From Nov. 1 until early morning on Dec. 18 there had been a total

of 19 accidents reported in the area. Of these accidents, two resulted in injury, nine in damage over $1,000, and eight in damage under $1000. Fortunately no fatalities have occurred in any of these incidents. However, when people drive recklessly or carelessly in wintry conditions, they not only put their own lives at risk, but the lives of

others on the road as well. “There is a chronic problem where people continue to drive at or above the speed limits when conditions require them to go well under,” says Sgt. Gary Heebner of the Chase RCMP. “They are driving too close, passing when the roads are slushy, and not giving themselves enough time.” With new snow fall-

ing almost daily, drivers must prepare ahead of time and plan for the worst conditions. “Remember to leave early, give yourself extra time, slow down, and arrive safe,” he says. If you witness an accident while on your travels, the RCMP ask that you pull over, check for injuries and obstructions to traffic, and immediately call 9-1-1.

Beware of nails in parking lot of clinic Crime Stoppers. Continued from B3 The Chase RCMP have received complaints of someone scattering roofing nails in the parking lot at the Chase Clinic, 826 Thompson Ave., during the night. There have been five to six occurrences over the past two to three months, says Heebner. Fortunately the area targeted has not impacted ambulances which come and go regularly. “The nails are generally just where the doctors and staff park,” says Heebner. No one has reported damage to their vehicles, as most nails have been spotted before they could cause problems. This, says Heebner, is another circumstance where surveillance would be helpful. Anyone who may have information about this mischief is asked to call Chase RCMP at 250-679-3221, or

The past couple of weeks for the Chase HEAT have been a bit rough as a window of opportunity that opened up to move up in the standings slowly closed. For whatever reason, the competition was tough, both in goals against and in the physical element. The result being a number of walking wounded regulars unable to suit up, those jobs taken by a number of different associate players. The

need was never greater for buying a program to know who was on the local side. Friday the 14th saw the division-leading Sicamous Eagles fly into town on a very snowy night. By the end of the contest they had fired 10 pucks past the combo of Chase netminders to three from the Heat marksmen. Fearless McKenzie Guardiero got one, Captain Kurtis Johnson got another and team leading scorer Shelby Kostyshen got the third. Before the game it was a white

out and after it was a wipe out. On Saturday night Chase headed into the Storm in Kamloops. The competition between these two is fierce and just maybe the best rivalry in the KIJHL. The first frame ended with the teams tied, Connor Venne the Saskatoon Shooter doing the honours for Chase. No scoring in the second, and in the third the Storm got three, the last into an empty net. It was the first win for Kamloops in 12 games.

Separatists continue to dream on Global ViewS Gwynne Dyer In other parts of the world, separatist movements are usually violent (e.g. Kashmir, Sri Lanka, the various Kurdish revolts) and they sometimes succeed (South Sudan, Eritrea, East Timor). Whereas in the prosperous, democratic countries of the West, they are generally peaceful, frivolous and unsuccessful. Cases in point are the various separatist movements in the European Union. Scotland will hold a vote on independence from Britain in 2014, while Catalonia and the Basque country in Spain have just elected nationalist governments that promise to hold referendums on independence. But, it will probably never happen. The Scots, the Catalans and the Basques tend to see themselves as victims, but nobody else does. They are self-governing in most matters except defence and foreign affairs, they have their own budgets and they maintain separate education systems and cultural institutions. The Scots get more money back from the central government in London than they pay in taxes, while Catalonia and the Basque country (‘Euskara’ in the Basque language) claim they contribute

more to Madrid than they receive. But, the sums are relatively modest and, in any case, it is not necessary to break up the country in order to renegotiate fiscal imbalances. What really drives separatism is emotion, which is why popular support for it is so soft. Rectifying the historic defeat of (insert name of centuries-old lost battle here) by declaring independence in the here-and-now has great emotional appeal, but most people put their economic interests first. Nationalist leaders, therefore, always promise independence will change nothing important on the economic front. The way they do this in both Scotland and the separatist regions of Spain is by insisting membership in the European Union would pass automatically to the successor state. The opponents of secession, however, argue there’s nothing automatic about it. The arguments are not just directed at the home audience. Last month, when Scotland’s First Minister, Alex Salmond, agreed to terms for the 2014 referendum with the British government, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo promptly declared an independent Scotland would not automatically be an EU member and that any one of the 27 EU member states (Spain, for example) could veto it. “In the hypothetical case of independence,” he said, “Scotland would have to join the

What are you waiting for?

queue [for EU membership] and ask to be admitted, needing the unanimous approval of all member states to obtain the status of a candidate country.” European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, also said in September an independent Scotland would be seen as a new state and would have to apply to join. This was furiously disputed by Salmond, who knew his chances of winning the 2014 referendum were nil if the Scots believed they were voting to leave the EU. For months he insisted he had sought the opinion of his government’s law officers, who had confirmed Scotland would inherit EU membership automatically and would not even have to adopt the euro. Alas, he was lying. Late last month, it became known Salmond had not actually asked for the law officers’ opinion at all. Now he has been forced by public opinion to pop the question — and he may not like the answer. An even bigger defeat for Salmond came in his negotiations with British Prime Minister David Cameron, where he had to agree the referendum would ask a simple yes-or-no question: In or out? This goes against the instincts of all separatist leaders, who prefer a fuzzy, feel-good question that doesn’t mention the frightening word “independence” at all. The most famous formulation of this question was in the 1995 Quebec referen-

dum on secession from Canada: “Do you agree that Quebec should become sovereign after having made a formal offer to Canada for a new economic and political partnership within the scope of the bill respecting the future of Quebec and of the agreement signed on June 12, 1995?” Not exactly clear, is it? That referendum was very close (Quebecers voted to remain part of Canada by a margin of 50.58 per cent to 49.42 per cent) but, in 2000, the Canadian federal government passed a law generally known as the Clarity Act. It said negotiations between the federal government and any province on secession should only follow “a clear expression of the will of the population of a province that the province cease to be part of Canada.” This requirement would not be met, it added, if the referendum question “merely focuses on a mandate to negotiate without

soliciting a direct expression of the will of the population of that province on [independence]” or if the question “envisages other possibilities . . . such as economic or political arrangements with Canada that obscure a direct expression of the will of the population on [secession].” This law drastically reduces the likelihood the separatists could win any future referendum in Quebec and it’s obviously what Cameron had in mind in his negotiations with Salmond on the Scottish referendum. As for Catalonia and Euskara, the national parliament in Madrid must approve of any referendum on separation and the current Spanish government has made it abundantly clear it has no intention of doing that. So, it’s mostly just hot air and hurt feelings, really. -Gwynne Dyer’s columns appear in publications in 45 countries.

Christmas a community affair ShuSwap paSSion Jim Cooperman Given today’s frenetic shopaholic holiday season, it can be enlightening to reflect upon the way Shuswap’s early settlers celebrated Christmas. While the focus now for many people is on wasteful, over-consuming, the settlers focused on sharing, helping each other and enjoying the fruits of their labours. With little money to spend and very few places to shop, Shuswap pioneers looked forward to holiday season parties with their neighbours and especially the annual Christmas concerts and dances held at their one-room schools. The entire community became involved in these concerts. Students began rehearsing their parts in November and their parents and siblings helped them practice until it was perfect. Everyone helped

by making costumes, props, sets and decorations. The concert was most always a success and parents were proud of their little angels and wisemen. Former Celista School teacher Eleanor Nelson recalled her experiences in the 1920s in a 1987 Chase weekly newspaper that was later reprinted in the 1995 Shuswap Chronicles. One year they put on the gripping drama, Lord Ullin’s Daughter, a thrilling tragedy of two ill-fated lovers eloping as the lord attempted to rescue his daughter. He arrived in time to find the lovers in a small boat attempting to cross a lake during a raging storm. Sheets were pulled by students off-stage to represent the waves, and when the cardboard boat sank, the tragedy turned into a comedy. Often the teachers were also in charge of organizing the purchase of gifts and the candy, nuts and Japanese oranges for their students and the preschool children, using money donated by all the adults in the community. Using the letters to Santa written by the students, the teacher

would order the gifts from the Eaton’s catalogue. With winters most often snowy and cold, families arrived at the schools in sleighs singing carols to the sound of sleigh bells. The highlight was when Santa arrived and brought presents for the children. The concerts culminated with a dance, with the local band making the music and the children taking part as well.

hung to age along with the fruitcakes. Most gifts were purchased through catalogues and the ordering was done in secret. Often the presents were items needed for winter such as gloves, scarves, mittens, and wool socks. Games were also popular and often children found a homemade sled or toy under the tree that was cut in the back 40. Home and tree decorations were all

“with little money to spend and very few places to shop, Shuswap pioneers looked forward to holiday season parties with their neighbours and especially the annual Christmas concerts and dances...” As the evening wore on, the babies and younger children were bedded down atop the desks pushed into the corners. Preparations for the family holiday celebration began months earlier when the best chicken or goose was penned up and fattened, the tastiest vegetables were set aside and the Christmas baking was done. The plum puddings were boiled inside cloth bags and then

homemade. Instead of electric lights, small candles were clipped on to the branches and these were only lit at special times when the family members were gathered around to celebrate. In Enderby, Christmas Day was also a time for music. Upon incorporation in 1906, one of the first actions by the council was to give local musicians $100 to form a city band. Every year on Christmas, they would

march around town playing holiday tunes. One year, there was too much snow and it was too cold for marching, so they hired a team and a sleigh. As was recounted in Robert and Joan Cowan’s history book, Enderby, “When we started to play, the team took off. They did not like the music and were going to leave it behind. We covered a lot of ground with that carol until the driver got control again.” Due to the cold, the instruments became frozen and the travelling concert ended early that year. All too often pioneer life is viewed in terms of the hardships faced by the early settlers. But as the many articles in the nine volumes of the Shuswap Chronicles attest, there were many good times, especially during the holiday seasons that were filled with community cheer, homemade music and gifts, and good food. As communities today struggle to achieve sustainability goals and reduce their carbon outputs to address climate change and economic turmoil, there are lessons to be learned from the simpler lifestyles of our pioneers.

WEISSE, GERHARD ERVIN September 7, 1928 - December 5, 2012 We would like to announce the passing of Gerhard Ervin Weisse on December 5, 2012. He was born in Beisker, Alberta on September 7, 1928. Our Dad was in the logging industry starting out in the Golden area. Moving to Calgary where he had his own lumber yard for many years. When he was thinking about retiring, he decided that the Shuswap was where he wanted to be so he found a piece of property in Eagle Bay and for any weekends he would travel back and forth and we would meet him there and we helped build up his property. Over the years he made many friends there and he always gave a helping hand. All who knew Dad (Gerhard) have many wonderful memories of his time at Eagle Bay. He will be sadly missed by all his family and friends. As requested there will be no funeral but there will be a Celebration of Life to be announced at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to FISCHER’S FUNERAL SERVICES & CREMATORIUM LTD., Salmon Arm, (250) 833-1129. COLLIVER, VICTOR PETER May 27, 1957 - December 12, 2012 It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our best mate. He was the adored husband of Shelley and proud father of Brock. He leaves behind his loving family in Australia and Canada. Pete’s family was the most important thing in his life. Peter passed away unexpectedly at work under the sunny blue skies of Adams Lake. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and the bush. His passion for logger sports played an integral part of Pete, Shelley and Brock’s life together. Peter will be fondly remembered for his humor, love and compassion by many. He is now at rest with his mom, dad and old dog Maggie. His legacy will live on! A celebration of life will be held at the Chase Community Hall Friday December 21, 2012 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers please make a donation the Lupus Society of BC #329-720 6th Street, New Westminster, BC V3L 3C5 (1-866-585-8787) info@ bclupus.org. On line email condolences may be sent to Peter’s obituary at www.bowersfuneralservice.com
