TERRACE - Four local youths were honoured by the Governor General of Canada Dec. 10 for putting out flames that burned two men last January. The youths, along with one of the men, Thornhill resident Murray Hamer, each received a Certificate of Commendation, signed by Canada’s Governor General David Johnston, which recognizes those who have made a significant contribution by providing assistance to another in a selfless manner. Receiving the certificates alongside Hamer at a ceremony held in the city’s council chambers were his sons Patrick Hamer and Nickolas Hamer, his niece Dayne Wright and nephew Parker Wright.

“You guys are just amazing,” said Terrace city councillor Lynne Christiansen to the group. “It could have been much worse.” Murray Hamer, who suffered second degree burns as a result of catching on fire, agrees. On the afternoon of January 11 2012, Murray Hamer was working on his farm with helper Jess Hansen, who was filling a 4x4 quad with a jerry can of fuel before moving on to a nearby truck to empty the can of the rest of its contents. In the meantime, the youths were feeding horses nearby when they heard Murray’s call for help. A spark had ignited the fuel, which stunned Hansen as he had caught on fire. He froze, ignited, holding the jerry can. Murray stepped in and pulled the can out of Hansen’s hand, but when he threw it down onto
the ground he spilled fuel on the ground and himself, catching on fire too. While Murray dragged Hansen to a nearby hydrant, he called for help. Patrick grabbed a fire extinguisher and Dayne grabbed a blanket. Parker said “stop, drop and roll” – which Murray did, although the fuel that had spilled on him meant the flames would re-ignite. Patrick had learned to use a fire extinguisher before and doused the two flaming men at the base of the flames. The youth threw a blanket over Hansen’s head, and one of them opened up the hydrant under which Hamer slid. And after the fire on Hansen had burned out, Dayne and Nickolas threw a blanket over Murray next. Murray suffered second de-

gree burns on the back of one of his legs and his hand and Hansen emerged, luckily, with some singed hairs as the fire had not burned through his clothes. And after the incident, Thornhill fire chief Wes Patterson said the youths did exactly what they were supposed to do in that instance. “I am very thankful that they did what they did because I was so out of control at the time,” said Murray to councillors and an audience during the presentation. “It certainly is a good thing that they were there.” Deputy mayor James Cordeiro presented each of the five with their own Certificate of Commendation, a Canadian honour awarded through a voting process held by the Canadian Decorations Advisory Committee.

Family dog shot accidentally By Shaun Thomas The Northern connector
PRINCE RUPERT - A family pet was mistakenly shot by Prince Rupert RCMP one week ago. Two gun shots rang out in the Sherbrooke Ave. area shortly after 11 p.m on Dec. 14. According to Cst. Matt Ericson, members responded to a call about a wolf in the 500 block of Sherbrooke Ave. and upon arrival saw what they believed to be a wolf running across the street chasing a deer into McClymont Park. Due to safety concerns for those in the neighbourhood and around McClymont Park, members began searching for the animal. “The officers believed it to be a wolf, it looked like a wolf, and it wasn’t until the animal was put down that officers determined it was actually a dog,” said Ericson, noting that the owners confirmed the animal was a wolf-dog hybrid.
“It is very unfortunate that this incident occurred and we offer our sincere apologies to the owner of the animal. “We have been in continued contact with the owner who is obviously very upset, but has also been understanding given the circumstances of the situation ... The member is beside himself right now because he is an animal lover too.” This year the city of Prince Rupert has seen a significant increase in the wolf population and to date has received 11 calls for service involving wolves since the beginning of November. The Prince Rupert RCMP reminds residents to keep their animals confined while at home and to use a leashes when out walking. In the event that members of the community observe wolves within the city, they are asked to contact Conservation at 1-877-9527277 or RCMP at 250627-0700.

LNG pipeline route still undecided By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT -With the environmental assessment now filed, Spectra Energy continued their community consultations with presentations to Prince Rupert and Port Edward councils this week. While the project description is in the hands of government, community coordinator Evan Saugstad told council that the company has yet to determine what the final route the pipeline will take to Prince Rupert will be. One route would be completely land based and pass over Work Channel while the other two would include underwater pipeline – one entering the sea near Kitsault and the other at Portland Inlet. “We haven’t ruled out any of the options yet. Gift of food …
Kitimat administration is seeking to fix some inconsistencies in the municipal code to amend the height provisions for accessory structures. One passage in the Code says they can be no higher than three metres, while another says they can’t be higher than 4.5 metres. The proposal from administration is now for accessory structures to be no more than three metres tall, while accessory structures within building envelopes can be no more than nine metres high.

TERRACE - Residential construction values to the end of November are the highest since 2008, according to building statistics from the city. More than $3.5 million worth of permits for single family residential construction were issued by the end of November. That’s higher than the $2.99 million for the same time period last year but less than the $6.35 million in permits issued in 2008 which itself was the highest amount in the past decade. “Our housing starts have been moderately good for the year,” reported senior building inspector Bruce Miller to council. “Our total number of units including single family, multi-family and mobile homes is 30. “The placement of 12 new mobile homes is above normal for that category. Good to see a large percentage of these being “placed in the newly rezoned [mobile home] park on Kalum, replacing the older units there,” Miller continued. A number of the single family residences went up in the new subdivision section across from Ecole Mountainview Elementary on the bench.

Feds selling Ridley Terminals By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - The Federal Government announced last week that Ridley Terminals in Prince Rupert is officially up for sale. Minister of State for Finance Ted Menzies and Minister of State for Transport Steven Fletcher announced the government’s intention to sell the coal shipping terminal to a private sector company during a Dec. 13 press conference at the Prince Rupert Hotel. “Under the previous Liberal government, Ridley Terminals was undervalued and the sale was to proceed with no guarantee of open access for the market... Ridley Terminals now has real value. RTI made more in operating revenue than the previous government was going to sell it for. It’s a tremendous turnaround,” said Minister Menzies, noting that RTI made $34 million last year. “Our government will protect the interest of users by ensuring that Ridley Terminals continues to operate in an open access manner. That is non-negotiable, and if no such bid is received then RTI will not necessarily be sold.” Details of the sale, including reviewing the bids and ensuring all criteria are met, will be handled by the Canada Development Investment Corporation (CDIC). At the moment not much is known about the sale, but the Ministers promised that controlling interest in the company would not be sold to any state-owned companies outside of Canada. Minister Fletcher noted that RTI is the last major terminal in Canada operated by the government, and that is one of the considerations the government looked at when making the decision. “There are those who say the government should not be in the coal business, and that it should be private interests that are taking the risks and incurring any gains or losses,” he said. “We will proceed only if the sale nets fair value for taxpayers... It is a win-win. Not only will it provide value for taxpayers, it will provide benefit to Prince Rupert to help it realize its full potential as a gateway to the Asia-Pacific.”
Acting RTI board chair Byng Giraud said the government had the board’s full support for the sale and the following day the Ridley Terminals User Group gave their support to the idea. “Our group’s members, representing world-class global mining and terminal operatorship experience, remain committed to a fullyoptimized Ridley Terminals which is commercially operated with open access for all shippers”, said Doug Smith, Chair, Ridley Terminals Users Group. “A fully-enabled Ridley Terminals will ensure the long-term viability of the asset, for the benefit of the Western Canadian coal market and, related, local communities and economies throughout British Columbia and Alberta. The Ridley Terminals Users Group looks forward to the planned divestiture process.” However North Coast MLA Gary Coons, who was at the announcement, said he was less than impressed with the announcement. “It is a bit of a shocking, surprising announcement. RTI has been a key part of our community for many years and is making money hand over foot, so on one hand it seems a bit weird to sell an asset that is making money,” he said. “You would think that if something was making profit you would keep it under your wing... I guess the devil is in the details, and all we have now is a 10-minutes press conference.” Skeena – Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen said he too was taken by surprise by the announcement. “I’m concerned they are making up for bad decisions by selling off the crown jewels, since the teminal has made money for Canadians after years of losing money,” he said, alluding to purchases like the controversial F-35 purchases. Cullen also questioned assurances that there would be no foreign ownership. “They also said that they wouldn’t export raw bitumen or allow state owned control of Canadian Resources, so their record speaks for itself,” he said. “I just don’t trust these guys as far as I can throw the Prime Minister’s office.”

Spill could cost the economy over $308 million By Shaun Thomas
The Northern connector
“...They are taking the economic benefit that is certain to occur and comparing it with spill costs of an event that is highly unlikely...”
PRINCE RUPERT - An oil spill on the North Coast could result in more than $300 million and over 4,000 person years of employment being lost from the region’s economy, said a study by UBC released Dec. 12. The study, authored by UBC Fisheries Centre director Rashid Sumaila with funding from Todd Nogier the World Wildlife Fund Canada, examined what would happen if there were a medium or largescale oil spill from a tanker carrying crude oil. In the event of a medium spill of 10,000 cubic metres of hydrocarbons, the study said the regional economy would lose between $41 million and $189 million, between 399 and 1,314 person-years of employment and $23 million to $89 million of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) over 50 years. In the event of a large spill of 41,000 cubic metres of hydrocarbons, the losses would balloon to between $87 million and $308 million, between 1,652 and 4,379 person years of employment and between $72 million and $205 million of GDP over 50 years. The losses are based on the impact to commercial and recreational fishing, port activities, ferry transportation and marine tourism. But the report takes it a step further and looks at the cost of cleaning up any potential spill in the area. Should a medium spill occur the costs of clean-up would be in the area of $2.4 billion while a largescale spill would cost $9.6 billion. In comparison, the authors note the Northern Gateway could produce economic effects of $628 million, between 5,717 and 8,369 person years of employment and $293 million in GDP over 50 years. Although the financial implications outlined in the report are quite high, the authors note that there are a lot of things that weren’t taken into account during the study. “While this study provides a highly conservative first estimate of the potential economic impacts of a tanker spill in the North Coast region of British Columbia, several potential impacts on valued ecosystem services were not assessed. These include social, cultural and ecological values to residents and non-residents of the region. Additional investigation of these values, including those related to food-social-ceremonial fishing, would provide a more complete estimate of the total economic value related to the ocean in the North Coast region and support informed decision-making for industrial developments, such as the Enbridge Northern Gateway project,” it reads. “If these costs are accounted for, all of the projected economic gains from the Enbridge Northern Gateway project could quickly turn into losses in the event of a tanker spill.” Todd Nogier, manager of corporate and western access communications for Enbridge, said the company has a number of concerns about the study. “One concern is that they are taking the economic benefit that is certain to occur and comparing it with spill costs of an event that is highly unlikely to occur... It doesn’t take the low probability into account. The report states a large-scale spill is a 15,000 year event, which we have no disagreement with, but most economic impact analysis will take the probability into account,” he said, adding that Enbridge is taking steps to mitigate any potential spill and improving on emergency response in the region. “A spill of this magnitude has never happened in Canadian waters. The Canadian oil marine industry has a world-leading safety record and has not had a spill.”

Haisla not chasing dollars, responds Haisla chief Ross By Cameron Orr
THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
KITIMAT - Haisla Chief Councillor Ellis Ross said the words from the Coastal First Nations executive director printed in national media won’t be easily forgiven. Ross spoke with the Sentinel following a widely publicized split between his community and that of Coastal First Nations, a coalition that seeks environmental protection for traditional territories. In an article printed in the Globe and Mailt earlier this month, Coastal First Nations (CFN) executive director Art Sterritt is quoted saying that the Haisla had decided to approach industry in their territory in “the dirtiest way possible” and that their interests were purely economical. However that’s not the case, said Ross, who said the Haisla’s interests are always to promote a company to use the cleanest methods possible. “This is how we approach every project,” he said. He said the impression that the Haisla are just after money “is entirely false.” Ross said the comments by Sterritt were hurtful to the Haisla people. “Those statements, they’re going to be really tough to forgive and forget.” One of the key issues regarding the two sides parting ways came from comments regarding the Northern Gateway Pipelines proposal. Ross picked up on comments published earlier in the year by the Globe and Mail, which quoted Sterritt as saying that if there was a fresh start and they were able to build a good relationship, the CFN might take another look at the project. But for Ross it’s not about relationships. “That is entirely false when it comes to Haisla interests,” said Ross.
“Looking at a project like that is not based on relationships.” However Sterritt has responded that the quotes in the national paper were not presented in the proper context. “We said, ‘well, we’d be game for that [starting over] but only on one condition; you stop the Joint Review Process’,” said Sterritt. “We’re not going to talk to you while you’re holding a hammer over our heads.” He continued, “But we also guaranteed them that it wasn’t going to change the outcome. What it would do, it would enable them to understand more fully what the impacts were. They could mitigate their own damages by not spending any more money on a project that would never ever be allowed by Coastal First Nations.” That discussion came from a CFN board meeting which Ross did not attend, he said. Meanwhile as the two sides struggle with each others’ viewpoint, Ross said he still plans to move forward and work with other First Nations directly, outside of the framework of the CFN. “I really think the time is now for First Nations to get involved in the regulatory framework,” he said, meaning having conversations about such things as spill response and tanker monitoring programs and software. “Then we become part of the solution for what’s in our territories right now and what’s proposed. And I’m not talking about Enbridge.” He added, “Regulatory decision making is going to impact rights and title and no one’s talking about it, how First Nations get involved.” He said he would love to be able to sit down and have a conversation with First Nations on the big picture, rather than only focussing in on specific issues.

PRINCE RUPERT The number of Prince Rupert students who are successful in completing high school within six years has increased over the last three school years, as well as grade 4 students being successful in their required FSA testing. However the district is still struggling in some areas. That was the message of School District 52 Superintendent Lynn Hauptman’s annual report to the Ministry of Education, which she shared with the board of education at the last monthly school board meeting. School completion rates have improved slightly each year since 2009/2010 when 58 per cent of students completed their schooling within six years. The 2010/2011 school year saw 63 per cent of students complete school, with 67 per cent of students finishing their schooling within six years in 2011-2012. “I’m very proud of the work that is happening in our district, Hauptman told the board on Dec. 11. “The board is excited to hear student achievement is continuing to improve. The district’s innovative programs and the board’s focus on supporting the instructional inquiries on student achievement is clearly making a difference, said Tina Last, board chair. However these numbers are still below the provincial average. In the 2009/2010 school year 80 per cent of British Columbian students completed high school within six years, and in 2010/2011 81 per cent were successful. Hauptman said even though the district’s numbers are below the provincial rate, the district is moving in the right direction and closing the gap. The district is happy to say the number of Aboriginal students completing school in six years has also increased. In 2009/2010 35 per cent of Aboriginal students earned their diploma within six years of secondary school, moving up to 43 per cent in 2010/2011 and once again up to 47 per cent last school year.
Once again this is below provincial levels, with 50 per cent of Aboriginal students completing their high school education within six years in 2009/2010 and 53 per cent in 2010/ 2011. The district said with over 60 per cent of students in the dis-

Northern Gateway will be one of the safest energy pipelines because it’s been designed by engineers, safety experts and the people of British Columbia.
y intention is to ma make ke the North her ern n Ga Gate tewa way y Pi Pipe peli line ne the strongestt and saf afes estt off its es ts kind in Can people of British Columbia have told us that we must exceed safety standards if it is to cross this beautiful province. We’ve heard their concerns and have continually incorporated their feedback into our plans. We have added $500 million in extra safety measures–like thicker pipe, more isolation valves, meticulous pipeline construction techniques, and plans for around the clock monitoring by real people, in real time, with sophisticated technology.
We will use thicker pipe... Northern Gateway pipe will have an average thickness of 0.80 inches. That’s 20% over and above current Canadian safety standard requirements for the Northern Gateway Project. The pipe will be even thicker when it crosses major rivers and tributaries. It will be welded with exacting precision and its integrity checked using ultrasonic inspection and hydrostatic testing methods. And to ensure safe operation, the frequency of high resolution, in-line inspection surveys will be increased across the entire pipeline system by a minimum of 50% over and above current practices.
We will respect wildlife habitats and migration routes... To address concerns from the public that the construction of the pipeline will affect the environment, we have pledged to build it in such a way that natural wildlife habitats, migration routes and fish spawning sites will be respected. During the building phase, disturbances will be kept to a minimum by having construction vehicles access most of the pipeline using existing forestry roads. Instead of building all new bridge structures, it will use existing watercourse crossings where possible. When construction is completed on each section, soil will be returned and shrubs and grasses native to the region will be planted. If any large trees are removed to make way for the pipeline, a new tree will be planted in another location as part of Enbridge’s commitment to plant a tree for every tree we remove to build our projects.
We will practice and be prepared for incidents... Our goal is always zero spills. To help achieve that, the pipeline will be monitored from the air and the ground and routinely inspected inside and out to identify and address any integrity issues. But that doesn’t mean we will not prepare for an incident. We will adhere to world-leading practices for oil spill response and recovery systems. Emergency response equipment and training will be provided and constantly updated and upgraded. Training exercises with our own operations personnel and local emergency providers will be conducted on a regular basis. Can we guarantee that there will never be a significant pipeline failure? Our original pledge to build a safe pipeline combined with further enhancements made after hearing the concerns of British Columbians puts us closer than any other pipeline system in the world to providing that guarantee.

KITIMAT — The Kitimat Marlins swim club received a generous boost of $250 through a donation from the Scotiabank branch in Kitimat.
Tweaks made to airport taxi plan By Cameron Orr THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
KITIMAT - Council tweaked the taxi program for the airport slightly at their December 10 Committee of the Whole meeting, on advice from administration to make the policy a little more clear. Now, the policy allows for a person’s caregiver to also be eligible for the lower taxi fare when travelling together. (The way the policy is set out, that would mean the two people would be charged $20 each for the ride.) As well, if any passengers on the trip do not qualify for the lower fares, the District of Kitimat will not subsidize the cab fare at all for that trip. There was additional discussion around the table regarding transportation for people who require service to the airport due to immediate health emergencies however councillors decided that there’s no way to make this service perfect. “We can’t win on this one,” said councillor Mario Feldhoff. “I would like to move forward to get to April 15 and see what’s happening.” He continued, “Lets put it out there and if by April 15 we realize, whoa, we messed up on this one it will be clear and we’ll adjust it... We may find that this is working good.”

New Year
All is calm. All is bright. New safety equipment at specific rail crossings means more silent nights for Prince Rupert residents. Electronic chimes and flashing lights will reduce the need for warning whistles. It’s part of a unique collaboration between the Prince Rupert Port Authority and its partners. As the Port of Prince Rupert grows, we’re proud to invest in projects like this — as well as community initiatives that make our city thrive. In this festive season and all year long, our very best to you and yours.
GATEWAY perspectives
Building skills Respect has been the cornerstone of our relationships with Aboriginal groups across Canada. That’s respect on their terms, not ours. And that means having an understanding of, and sensitivity to, the values and the issues that are important to them. When we started talking to Aboriginal communities about the Northern Gateway Project, they told us, unequivocally, that they wanted meaningful, long-term involvement in the labour force. That’s why we established a $1.5-million Gateway Education and Training Fund — and it’s not dependent, in any way, upon Northern Gateway regulatory approval. This fund supports training initiatives based in the pipeline, construction, and energy sectors. It is not training for the sake of training; it is totally focused on employment outcomes. And along Northern Gateway right-ofway communities, Enbridge is already connecting industry and community to help create Aboriginal career opportunities. Catherine Pennington, Northern Gateway’s Supervisor of Community Education, Training, and Skills Development, reports that we’re already co-funding training programs for surveyors and ironworkers. We’re purchasing seats in existing Aboriginal trades programs, and partnering with provincial and federal bodies to help develop skilled tradespeople in the areas
of heavy equipment operation, pipefitting, welding, and construction craft labouring. We’ve also co-ordinated the first of many “workforce connections” workshops, bringing together representatives of Northern Gateway equity First Nations and companies with labour-force needs for some meaningful employment discussion. We’ve heard, loud and clear, from Aboriginal communities that they don’t want to be bypassed anymore by economic opportunities created within, near, or around them — and we’re doing something about it. The Gateway Education and Training Fund shows our commitment to community and workforce development. We want to be connected to the Aboriginal community and not just because it makes good business sense. It’s about partnership. It’s about responsibility. And, ultimately, it’s about respect.

Fire chief talks earthquake response By Martina Perry THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
pet of the week
PRINCE RUPERT - It’s been nearly two months since a 7.7 magnitude earthquake rocked the North Coast, an event that has got many questioning what else can be done to ensure Prince Rupert is prepared. Dave Mckenzie, fire chief of the Prince Rupert Fire Rescue Department, made a presentation to the City last week outlining what local response teams did on the night of Oct. 27 and what else could be done in case of future events. Although there were hiccups with the Provincial Emergency Program (PEP) contacting areas, the local fire department didn’t wait for instructions. If a tsunami was going to arrive on the shores of Prince Rupert, local emergency response teams would have had under an hour to inform the public. “We had limited time to respond, but we put our emergency response plan into play instantly. We didn’t wait for directions,” Mckenzie said. The Prince Rupert Fire Rescue Department contacted personnel including the Prince Rupert Port Authority to tell them to evacuate, and along with the RCMP and port set up an Emergency Operating Centre at City Hall. At first a tsunami warning was put in place, but shortly after was downgraded into an advisory. RCMP members went door to door in low laying areas, advising people to head to higher ground or the civic centre, where an ESS reception centre was set up. Mckenzie said getting information out was difficult that night because systems were overloaded with people all trying to use the internet and their cell phones at once. An additional dispatcher had to be utilized because of the high number of people calling 911 at once. “There were so many people hitting the same sites at the same time. It was overloading the systems,” he said. Mckenzie said in cases of emergencies such as earthquakes or tsunami warnings, people must be ready to be self-sufficient for up to 72 hours. “All communications could be down. We might not be able to get any information out to the public,” Mckenzie said. To ensure people know what to do if a tsunami is expected to hit Prince Rupert, Mckenzie suggested

City of Prince Rupert
that a map identifying low laying areas in Prince Rupert and an information sheet informing people what to do in case of a tsunami should be included in the local phone book. City councillors also had ideas as to how to inform the public about what to do in case of a tsunami, including Jennifer Rice, who suggested the City should start using social media to give Rupertities important information during emergencies. City staff said they would look into the costs associated with this option. Many Rupertities have questioned why the City doesn’t have sirens in low laying areas to give warning of a possible tsunami, an idea councillor Joy Thorkelson is not a fan of because it could cause unnecessary panic. “If sirens go off because people in low laying areas have to move and everyone decides to move we would never get the low laying people out of there,” she said. However councillor Nelson Kinney wasn’t on the same page as Thorkelson and said a siren was needed.

Police increase traffic patrols By Margaret Speirs
THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
TERRACE - Christmas time is for celebration and family—and also for driving safely to ensure celebrating with family can continue. But drivers seem to be drinking and driving in higher numbers than expected since November, which is a surprise to the highway patrol officer in charge, Sgt. Pam Scott. Seven impaired drivers being stopped in one weekend was a high number, she said. The highway patrol, or West Pacific Region Traffic Services, includes Terrace, Kitimat, Prince Rupert and to Smithers. All emergency services personnel, including paramedics, firefighters, Terrace RCMP officers and highway patrol officers, hosted a Candy Cane Christmas Checkpoint on Hwy 16 by Ferry Island Dec. 14 to remind drivers to drive safely during the holiday season. Checkpoints were also held in Kitimat and Smithers. Part of safety on the roads includes wearing seatbelts, which officers check for all the time. The percentage of people who wear their seatbelts is 90 per cent or so; however, in crashes where alcohol is involved, most motorists don’t wear seatbelts, said Scott. Right now, highway patrol officers are focussing on driving for the road conditions so it’s possible to stop if something happens and prevent an accident. And that can include watching what kind of footwear the driver is
wearing – one driver was wearing big clunky boots and had trouble hitting the brake when he needed to as the boots got in the way, said Scott. To tell if you’re far enough behind a vehicle on the road, when the car in front of you passes an object on the side of the road, you should be able
to count to three before you reach the object. However, that’s for dry road conditions. Vehicles are being seen with winter tires, which used to all have the snowflake in a mountain design on them to indicate that they are proper winter tires, said Scott. But there are some brands that aren’t put-
ting that symbol on anymore. So as long as the tires have M+S on them, which stands for mud and snow, they’re okay to use, although they must have good tread on them. Police will be out and about, especially on weekends, until after the new year to ensure drivers are travelling safely.

DEC. 22 – Royal Purple #216 and Elks 425 host Breakfast with Santa from 10 a.m. to noon at Elks Hall. Photos with Santa. Donations accepted. ONGOING THE LAST Terrace Flu Clinics will be held Dec. 14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Terrace Health Unit. THE ‘NO empty Bowls’ Pet Food and Toy Drive is accepting items at Urban Pets until Dec. 24. Local animal shelters and rescue groups have a difficult time keeping up with the demand of abandoned animals this time of year. The animals’ wish list includes dry and canned pet food, toys, blankets/ towels, cleaning supplies, cat litter, pet beds and bowls. Items and/or monetary donations can be dropped off at Urban Pets or taken directly to a rescue group or shelter. For every full, unopened bag of pet food donated at Urban Pets, donors will receive a 10 per cent discount coupon for that store. All donations will be divided between the Northern Animal Rescue Alliance, Kitimat Humane Society and Northern Lights Animal Society. DURING THE holiday season, please save your recyclable bottles and cans for Helping Hands to help seniors, cancer patients and sick children who need help with prescriptions and trips to Vancouver for treatment. For pickup, call Ron and Mavis at 778634-3844. UNTIL DEC. 16, Terrace firefighters are asking for food donations to fill a trailer with nonperishable items for the Salvation Army Christmas Food Campaign. SALVATION ARMY Food Bank Drive: from Dec 1 to 24, bring a nonperishable food item to Denny’s for the Salvation Army food bank and get 20 per cent off your bill. One food item must be brought per person. DURING DECEMBER, the library invites the community to help “Fill Our Shelves.” Donations can be dedicated to someone and his/her name put up on the donation wall. Donations

Thrilling shootout win for Terrace Peewees By Anna Killen THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
TERRACE - The Terrace Pizza Hut Peewee rep team is riding high after a big win in a big place, taking first place in the Kelowna Tier Three tournament in a spectacular shootout win. “The boys played their hearts out and left everything out on the ice and it showed coming home with first place,” said parent Allan Bailey. The team, made up of 11 and 12 year olds, travelled the 15-hours to Kelowna Dec. 7 for the three-day tourney, facing off against Victoria in their first game on Friday and winning 6-5. They tied their second game against Kamloops on Saturday 5-5 and later that day faced off against home team Kelowna, winning 8-5 and making it into the final against Winfield on Sunday. The final game was a nail biter to say the least, back and forth with lead changes throughout the game, and went into overtime tied at six. But the 15 minutes of overtime solved nothing, so the teams headed to a shootout, with goalie Payton Fekete in net. Mason Richey was the first shooter up for Terrace—and the only one who scored—leaving it up to goalie Fekete to secure the win. “Our goalie had stopped all four shots in the shootout and if

“Everybody was kind of a little in shock, and everybody just threw their gloves off—they were so excited and pumped,” he said. And part of the excitement definitely comes from being a smaller community facing off against teams

from bigger towns. “Just being in the position of a small community in first place was pretty great,” said player Brandon Onstein. “I think some of the teams were shocked.”
Smithers Steelheads opt out of Coy Cup By Dan Mesec

KITIMAT - Kitimat KidSport got at $3,000 boost from the Kitimat Scotiabank. The program is aimed to helping youth get connected to sports, despite any financial barriers. In the photo are (l-r): Krystle Verissimo, Bruklyn Cabral, Shaun O’Neill with the District of Kitimat, Greg Saunders and Julien Poirier.
Player Mason Richey agrees. “For a smaller community to come to a bigger community and end up winning a tournament that had some pretty good teams in there, I think that’s it right there,” he said.
SMITHERS - The CIHL’s Smithers Steelheads have opted out of playing in the Coy Cup this year, as the realities of a working man’s league set in. “This year the tournaments going to be in Kitimat again and we feel it’s going to be the same four teams, it’s a big expense for us and a week off work,” Steelheads captain, Darryl Young said. “We just feel like if there was someone coming in from down south to make it different and more exciting I think we would.” The Steelheads would have been the defending champs of the Coy Cup. “Last year was great winning the Coy Cup but it’s a long week of hanging around playing hockey and it’s exciting to win,
but I think there is a lot of commitment to jobs and families and they can’t commit to the tournament right now,” coach, Tom DeVries said. “So we said if it’s the same four teams that are in our league than what’s the point?” The Coy Cup has been the provincial tournament for the senior mens AA division for nearly a hundred years and usually consists of two best teams from the southern leagues and two best teams from the northern leagues. However, in the past few years it seems the CIHL is the only league participating in the week long tournament. “When we found out there was going to be no other teams in the Coy Cup other than CIHL teams we declined for a few reasons,” club president, Kelly Zackarias said.
“One being we’ll be playing the same teams that are in the CIHL playoffs and also all our guys have to take a week off work and the loss of wages for a week came into play as well as costing the club between eight and $10,000.” Although BC Hockey is trying to encourage leagues in the Lower Mainland, on Vancouver Island as well as up in the Dawson Creek area to take part in the tournament, so far nothing has come to fruition. Terrace River Kings general manager Ray Hallock said he was shocked when he learned firstplaced Smithers had declined to participate this year. “I was shocked to get that email,” he said. “But it gives all the rest of us a little better hope for the Coy Cup.”

Suspect has been identified TERRACE - Terrace RCMP have a suspect in mind for the bomb threat at Northwest Community College that turned out to be a hoax in October. That’s according to RCMP Inspector Dana Hart in the city council agenda for its last meeting Dec. 10. “A suspect has been identified
and police are continuing their investigation,” he wrote. On Oct. 2, police evacuated the college after a bomb threat was received. An RCMP explosives detection police dog was called in and searched the campus and more than a dozen buildings for five hours but turned up noth-

In November, the college received two more threats that were deemed to not be dangerous and the campus was not evacuated either time. Police have not provided any more information about these threats so it’s not known if they are related to the bomb threat.
