Liability issues a challenge to land purchase

I

POTENTIAL TRESTLE repairs, rights of way might limit potential. BY TOBY GORMAN THE NEWS BULLETIN

The city’s intended purchase of 10.8 hectares of land and water at the Wellcox Railyard from Canadian Pacific will result in several challenges, say city officials, the most notable of which is assuming liability over the aging trestle that serves as the current access point. Last week, the city announced it entered into a purchase agreement with CP to buy the property at 7 Port Drive for $3.4 million with the intention of building a transit hub that could one day connect buses, rail and even a passenger ferry to downtown Vancouver. But along with potential trestle repairs and environmental concerns – the site is built on coal slag – the majority of the property is encumbered with perpetual rights of way which will limit development potential of the property. Nanaimo Mayor John Ruttan said he admits that the city has a tiger by the tail by entering the purchase agreement, but thinks the payoff will benefit taxpayers long-term. “For a number of years we’ve

been trying to make a transportation hub... and it’s something we see as a great opportunity,” he said. The Re gional District of Nanaimo partnered with the city on the purchase, agreeing to pay $2 million for a portion of the land that will house the transit hub. The city has not yet created a plan to develop the remaining part of the property. “The motivation on our part isn’t land development but to try to relocate the bus transfer system,” said Ruttan. Snuneymuxw Chief Douglas White III said his council looked into the property several years ago and considered the property more trouble than it is worth. “The environmental liability is one thing, and it in itself is a serious concern,” said White. “But I can say that property is easily the most complicated piece of land I’ve ever come across with the encumbrances, right of ways, leases and other issues. Our assessment is that it would be excessively expensive and costly.” He added that he expects city officials to include Snuneymuxw in future planning discussions. While still in early planning stages, condition of the trestle that connects the property to Esplanade remains a concern and is likely to come with a hefty price tag to repair if required. ◆ See ‘ACQUISITION’ /7

Parkway crash sends one driver to hospital BY CHRIS BUSH THE NEWS BULLETIN

A Nanaimo woman was airlifted to Victoria General Hospital Thursday after her car collided with a transport truck. The accident happened shortly before 3 p.m. when the 25-yearold woman drove her Hyundai Tiburon eastbound from College Drive across the Nanaimo Parkway intersection toward Fifth Street and collided with a nine-tonne Mack transport truck carrying a load of live seafood, police said. The woman’s car appeared to have been hit on the passenger

side and sustained heavy damage. The impact carried both vehicles about 25 metres north of the intersection and came to a halt with the car facing northbound in the passing lane and the truck straddling the concrete median barriers. The woman was rushed to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital and then airlifted to Victoria General Hospital. “She’s got significant head injuries,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman. “She was medevacced to Victoria. The family has been advised.”

No injuries were reported to have been sustained by the male driver of the transport truck. No other vehicles were involved. Police closed north and southbound lanes of the Parkway for about 30 minutes until emergency vehicles could clear the scene. The southbound lanes remained closed and Parkway traffic was rerouted through town until about 5:30 p.m. Police are still trying to determine who had the right of way at the intersection and the factors that led to the accident are still under investigation. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Inbrief Nonagenarian ready for polar bear plunge city scene

Shooting nets arrest warrant

Police have charged a Nanaimo man for shooting at a house. The incident happened July 25 at about 4 a.m. when seven rounds were fired from an alley into the front door of a basement suite of a house at 621 Nicol St. No one was injured. After an extensive investigation involving various Nanaimo RCMP units, police issued an arrest warrant Dec. 4 for Jeffery Ryan Oud, 36, of Nanaimo, on charges of mischief, endangering life and unlawfully discharging a firearm. “Oud was identified as a person of interest in that file early on and after all the information was gathered – from witness statements and forensic evidence – we filed a report with the Crown and Crown saw fit to issue a warrant for his arrest,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman. Oud turned himself in to Nanaimo provincial court Dec. 5 for a bail hearing. Oud was released and is scheduled to make his next court appearance on Jan. 8. Police are not releasing the reason why Oud allegedly shot at the house.

Shriners Burn Fund. There will also be prizes for the best costume (group and individual) as well as prizes for the oldest and youngest participants, said swim chairman Buddy McRae. “You get some colourful characters that come down, the idea to jump into Departure Bay on Boxing Day itself is colourful,” he said. “They like to dress up and have fun with it.” Last year approximately 130 swimmers came out for the annual swim, which is sponsored by Royal LePage Nanaimo. “We’re hoping to have a big crew out there this year,” McRae said. “The weather leading up to Christmas has been great, so hopefully this continues right through to Boxing Day.”

City council unanimously approved a motion by Coun. Fred Pattje to keep committee of the whole meetings at the Shaw Auditorium so the meetings can continue to be recorded and uploaded to the city’s website. The COW meetings, which generally take place on alternate Mondays from regular televised council meetings, have historically been held in the tight confines of the board room at city hall. Last winter the meetings were temporarily moved to the Shaw Auditorium in anticipation of moving them to the new annex when it is complete next month. That plan drew resistance from city watchdogs, who complained the new annex is not equipped with recording equipment, and with more delegates appearing before council the new space is not able to accommodate them. In April, council approved a motion that COW meetings be recorded and available on the Internet. The cost to equip the new board room at the annex with recording equipment is estimated at $90,000, and city management did not recommend the expense in the 2013 draft budget. “I wasn’t sure I’d get the support but as it turns out it was unanimous,” said Pattje. Council cannot pass bylaws at COW meetings, but still makes decisions on city finance and policy issues. Meetings can be viewed at www. nanaimo.ca by clicking on council agendas/minutes/video under public notices.

BY NIOMI PEARSON THE NEWS BULLETIN

At 97-years-old, Jim Rutherford Sr. could very well be the oldest polar bear swimmer to set foot in the icy shores of Departure Bay Beach Wednesday (Dec. 26). The Port Alberni resident, whose grandfather settled on what would become Rutherford Road in the late 1800s, will be participating in the 53rd annual Frank Ney Memorial Polar Bear Swim on Dec. 26, accompanied by three other generations of the Rutherford family. While he has participated in polar bear swims for the past 14 years, this will be his first end-of-year dip in the place he called home for so many years. “I look forward to carrying on the family name,” he said. Rutherford was born in South Wellington in 1915, and moved into the Harbour City in 1924. He started participating in polar bear swims after the death of his beloved wife, Evelyn. “I wanted to do it before my wife passed away – she said I’d have a heart attack, so the year she passed away I went in,” he said. Since then he has become a familiar face at the Alberni Valley polar bear swim, which due to insurance regulations has become an unofficial swim event in recent years. “I always show up every year,” he said, adding with a laugh, “The older you get, the stupider you get.” He said he has no pre-swim rituals, but that the secret to success is less – clothing that is. “I go quite early and I strip off to my shorts, my body temperature goes quite down so when I go in the water, the water is sometimes warmer than standing outside,” he said. Registration for the Frank Ney Polar Bear swim starts at 11 a.m., with the swim to follow at 1 p.m. There is no cost to participate, however, all proceeds from hotdog sales will be donated to the

Regional district’s three-party agreement secures use of biosolids on woodlot BY NIOMI PEARSON THE NEWS BULLETIN

The Regional District of Nanaimo will continue to divert biosolid materials from the landfill as it has for nearly a decade, with a formalized third-party agreement with Vancouver Island University and a Vancouver environmental company. Previously handled under two separate contracts with VIU and Sylvis Environmental Inc., the agreement outlines each

party’s responsibility to manage biosolids created through the process of wastewater treatment at the Greater Nanaimo Pollution Control Centre and French Creek Pollution Control Centre for a four-year term. “It’s worth the effort, but it was a huge exercise to create that document,” said Sean De Pol, RDN manager of wastewater services. “It is a leading example that can now be used by other jurisdictions.” Biosolids are nutrient-rich materials

that contain nitrogen and phosphorus, and can add beneficial properties to soil. Approximately 4,500 tonnes of biosolids are produced by the RDN control centres each year. “The soils on the VIU woodlot are very poor in nutrients, and prior to the biosolids program, they would add chemical fertilizers, and the way they would bring them in was through helicopter – a necessary but very expensive process,” De Pol said.

Under the new agreement, the cost will be $98.55 per tonne up to 4,000 tonnes per year and $60.57 per tonne over 4,000 tones. Taking the biosolids to the landfill for disposal would otherwise cost the district $115 per tonne. “Our only other alternative is taking them to the landfill… this agreement essentially frees up the landfill space and allows us to take a beneficial material and remove it out of the waste stream,” De Pol said. reporter3@nanaimobulletin.com

A camper van burst into flame shortly after its owner refuelled at the Chevron station on Terminal Avenue Wednesday. Initial investigations indicate a fuel leak triggered the blaze.

Woman homeless after camper fire A woman from Ontario has no place to live following a fire in her camper van Wednesday. The blaze broke out shortly before 10:30 a.m. at the corner of Terminal Avenue and Wentworth Street. Ennis Mond, Nanaimo Fire Rescue fire prevention officer, said the woman had just refuelled the 1974 Ford Econoline camper at a Chevron station and was about to pull out onto Terminal Avenue when the van’s engine quit. “It stalled and sputtered at the stop sign, Mond said. “Then there was a backfire underneath the cowling. She opened it up and it was on fire. Mond said the initial investigation indicated a fuel leak triggered the blaze. The vehicle had insurance, Mond said, but he was not sure if it was insured for fire. “The woman just purchased it about two or three weeks ago and had just moved out here from Ontario, Mond said. “She has no work and lives in the van.

TTreatment centre aids in living sober life

A PHONE call was the first step on the road to recovery. BY JENN McGARRIGLE THE NEWS BULLETIN

A collect call to her parents from a pay phone 15 years ago was Lorelie Rozzano’s first step toward a new life free of the manacles of addiction. Rozzano, 37 at the time, had run out of friends and family willing to help her out. Her boyfriend, who often bailed her out by paying the rent when she spent all of her money on booze and drugs, had left her, she had lost her job and she didn’t have a land line anymore, so she walked to the nearest pay phone to make the call. Her parents had told her not to call them for help any more unless she wanted to go into treatment for her addiction to drugs and alcohol. Rozzano’s father hesitated when he realized who the call was from, but accepted it to hear his daughter say the words he had wanted her to say for so long: “I’m ready.” “My greatest love was addiction, it no longer was people or life,” she said. “Treatment is about the scariest thing an alcoholic or drug addict will do. You have to admit you have a problem and you’ve spent all these years trying to show everybody you don’t. That pay phone call was the beginning of a whole different life.” The very next day, Rozzano was at Edgewood treatment centre. But while she recognized she was at a low point, treatment was only a last resort after other options had run out and she went into the program with the intention of just staying a few days. “But the strangest thing started to happen for me,” said Rozzano. “I started to wake up to the truth of what had been going on in my life.” Edgewood staff encouraged her to start thinking about what she had been doing and why and she realized that her life revolved around alcohol and drugs. For example, Rozzano was caught drinking and driving and her solution to ensuring that never happened again was to give up driving. She would schedule appoint-

ments in the afternoons because she didn’t feel well in the mornings and often avoided events that did not involve drinking. “For the first time, I wasn’t able to BS my way through anything,” said Rozzano. “The relief I had in becoming well was actually what I had been looking for in drugs and alcohol.” Rozzano, now 53, is writing a series of fictional books about addiction, the first of which, Jagged Little Edges, comes out in January. She is also an admissions coordinator at Edgewood, having dedicated herself to working with others struggling with addiction shortly after finishing the program herself. The 80-bed residential treatment program is based on the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and

includes a medical component: the facility has on-site detox services, a full-time physician, two psychiatrists and 24-hour nursing, which allows Edgewood to take people who need detoxification services. “It’s the first step in a treatment process,” said Lorne Hildebrand, executive director. Treatment centres don’t often offer detox as well, so what often happens when people go elsewhere is they finish a medical detox program and then face a long wait to get into treatment, during which time they relapse, he said. What is also different is new intakes are accepted continuously and many people coming through the doors don’t really understand the depth of their illness until they have been there a while and see someone new coming in, added Rozzano.

People stay in Edgewood’s inpatient program for an average of 56 days, although length of stay varies depending on the person, said Hildebrand. He said what Edgewood treats is the disease of dependence as opposed to drug and alcohol abusers, the difference being that abusers are able to stop when they see negative consequences from their behaviour, while those with the disease of dependence cannot. About a third of Edgewood’s inpatient clients will continue on to the facility’s 30 off-site extended care beds, which will soon be in a new building being constructed on site, for additional support. “No matter how good the treatment is, if you don’t do lots of good follow up work afterward, it’s not good treatment,” said Hildebrand. “The longer the support … the way better chance you have.” Because a lot of Edgewood’s clients come from all over Canada and even the world – and include famous athletes and musicians, among other celebrities, although they aren’t mentioning any names – the organization has an online aftercare program, satellite offices in Seattle, Vancouver and Victoria, and Edgewood-trained counsellors it contracts with in almost every major city across Canada. Hildebrand said returning the addict into a healthy family environment is important and the sixday adult program and four-day children’s program allow family members to examine how they’ve been affected by their loved one’s addiction. Hildebrand acknowledges that the Edgewood program is expensive, but the Edgewood Foundation tries to raise money to sponsor people. “The unfortunate thing about this stuff is it is a very treatable disease, but it’s expensive and time consuming,” he said. “It’s undertreated and there’s lot of people out there that need help but don’t get help. The bulk of those people hold down full-time jobs.” John Horn, the City of Nanaimo’s social planner, said Edgewood raises the profile of the community, given that people come from all over to attend its residential program. The facility also takes some of the pressure off the public programs, freeing up space for people who can’t afford to pay the fees at Edgewood, he added. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Acquisition meets goals of city plan ◆ From /1 Ted Swabey, the city’s manager of community safety and development, said it is possible to avoid that cost and liability. “There is certainly going to be significant costs depending on how we upgrade it or if we upgrade it,” he said. “But it may not end up being the primary access to the site. In the long term we expect to have Front Street go through the property and become the major access.” CP, which put the entire 21.6 hectares of the rail yard up for sale in January 2011, is currently retaining ownership of the southern portion of the land. Ruttan said the company was unwilling to subdivide into smaller parcels. Despite the challenges, the acquisition meets several priorities of the strate gic community plan, including working with other stakeholders to improve transportation and mobility in Nanaimo, improving the waterfront and taking responsibility of a key area of the city. “It’s the last urban frontier of Nanaimo, and it’s extremely important that this last piece of urban frontier gets developed in the best possible way for the citizens,” said Coun. Fred Pattje. City council will have to review all leases – two companies currently lease part of the site – licences, rights of way, environmental and geotechnical reports and other site assessment before approving the move, with the property transfer scheduled for March 31. reporter2@nanaimobulletin.com

Deaths won’t affect debate The horrific fatal shooting of 20 students and six adults at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., has caused so much pain and anguish, to many the idea didn’t sound real, shocked that such a thing could happen. But it was all too real, as the U.S. again faces its demons in trying to reconcile a constitutional amendment to bear arms against the destructive capacity of modern weaponry. Speaking at a church FAMILIES service in Newtown, OFF victims President Barack Obama said the greatest test of deserve the U.S. is how it looks change, not after its children, and the bickering over Newtown experience, like gun ownership. with other schools where similar shooting atrocities have occurred before it, gives his country a failing grade. In a country that places greater value on owning guns than helping those who suffer from mental illness or who are just left behind in the maturation from a child, to a teenager to an adult, the end result was again repeated for all Americans to experience – and unfortunately again probably ignore with time. For U.S. politicians, so many of whom rely on the pro-gun lobby to fund their campaigns, they’re helpless to do anything positive on gun control, for fear any restrictions will encroach on that constitutional right to own a gun. The debate will now repeat itself in Washington, D.C. and on the cable news networks – arm more people to dissuade anyone from taking murderous liberties versus tighter controls on firearm ownership. The families of all those who lost loved ones in the Newtown school deserve some forward-thinking results from that debate rather than endless partisan bickering, but they’re not likely to get it.

shot and killed at a Sikh temple in August, and you have more than enough evidence that the American gun laws need to be addressed. A responsible person owning a gun is not the issue. Hunters and those who shoot competitively should be allowed to own weapons – as long as they acquire them through a registered process. Short of banning all guns, we have to have faith in our system and those who own guns use them responsibly. But, look at the faces of the children killed in Newtown, look at the news coverage and see what the people of the town are going through in the shooting’s aftermath. And then tell me there is even one good reason why automatic weapons should be made available to anyone other than armed services personnel or police forces. The devastation these guns cause – in the hands of the wrong people – has to stop. This was supposed to be my Christmas column filled with words of hope and peace, not death. Fear mongering won’t solve issue To the Editor, Re: New emergency plan ffor John Barsby students, Dec. 1. Jamie Brennan, Nanaimo school board chairman, fears for the lives of school children who are at imminent risk of dying from the Colliery dams catastrophically failing. I wonder if he has really looked at the information, or whether this is a political move. We also care about school children and all people who live in the flood zone. If the dams are really about to fail so terribly, Brennan should not be fear mongering in the newspapers but asking city staff to take steps right away to lower the level of the water in the dams. This is possible, could be done relatively quickly and Save the Colliery Dams Representatives has suggested it to city staff. Our conversation

with staff and the Provincial Dam Safety Branch suggests they are comfortable with the early warning system that is in place right now. They say the dams are stable and no further steps need to be taken until we go to the next step of rehabilitation, removal or

rebuilding. In the case of a flood event, we are told that it would take between four hours to several days to affect the zone downstream. In the case of an earthquake, we were told that the earth movement would be the early

warning needed to get to safety. So let’s hope Brennan gets off his soapbox. We all want people to be safe, but fear mongering does not allow for a rational discussion. Roblyn Hunter Nanaimo

Christmas greeting a harmless tradition To the Editor, Re: ‘Happy holidays’ includes everyone, Letters, Dec. 18. Bernie Smith seems to want to take any trace of religion out of Christmas greetings and consequently supports the concept of not offending anyone by using the politically correct ‘happy holidays” rather than the traditional ‘merry Christmas’. Unfortunately, he seems to have forgotten that the word ‘holiday’ is actually a contraction of ‘holy day’ and consequently there is a religious undertone in wishing anyone any sort of a holiday. Far from being of a particular religious persuasion as he so politely suggests, my interest in retaining the ‘merry Christmas’ form of greeting is more based on tradition. Going back to the early settlers, this was the traditional form of greeting at this time of year. So many of our cherished traditions are under attack from minorities

and too liberal do-gooders that we are gradually losing touch with our roots. None of my friends of what Smith refers to as other ‘religious persuasions’ have ever been offended by someone wishing them a merry Christmas. It is a pleasant and harmless tradition with roots way back in Canadian history. Personally, I think we should keep it and relegate ‘happy holidays’ to wishing our friends pleasant summer or winter vacations. Garry Bradford Nanaimo

Federal Conservatives turn their backs on poor To the Editor, This Christmas is shaping up to be a dark one for the world’s poorest citizens. The Canadian International Development Agency is facing

draconian budget cuts – 41 per cent of which will affect assistance directed to the world’s most impoverished countries. According to International Co-operation Minister Julian Fantino, aid will now be linked to projects benefiting the Canadian private sector. To make a bad situation worse, the Conservative government recently blocked Bill 398, which would have allowed inexpensive, generic life-saving medicine to save millions of people in the developing world – at no cost to Canada. This trifecta of shame makes me wonder just what Prime Minister Stephen Harper has against the world’s poor. Not since 1939, when Canada refused entry to a shipload of Jewish refugees, has Canada so willfully and malignantly turned its back on those in need. Nathaniel Poole Victoria

Councillors’ decision on core review not in city’s best interest To the Editor, Re: Motion to review city’s core services fails in close council vote, Dec. 20. The majority of Nanaimo council told taxpayers Monday it’s fun to spend their money. Basically, Mayor John Ruttan and four councilors, Dianne Brennan, Ted Greves, Fred Pattje and Diana Johnstone, said they love whatever city staff tell them and are eager to be bobble-heads. The five need to get educated and research why democracies and fairness work – everything must be questioned. The foxes are running the hen house. Translation: city staff is telling council members only what they want them to hear so they get their way. We have seen this many times with the Vancouver Island Conference Centre, the Port Theatre, Nanaimo Centre Stage and contracts.

The misinformation and bias continues uninterrupted. These unthinking council members need to pay out of their own pockets for whatever screw ups occur in the future. Arguments from Brennan that spending $200,000 on a core review is not necessary is downright ignorant considering she is anxious to hand out $800,000 to facelift a cumbering Victoria Road theatre. Brennan obviously does not care about spending just a few hundred thousand dollars to watch the city budget $170-million, but is happy to shell out almost $1 million dollars for a building needing demolishment. The majority of council is not doing its due diligence and not watching over our money as it should. J.C. Broderick Nanaimo

Oppal’s baggage taints Pickton commission To the Editor, Was Wally Oppal, a onetime attorney general in BC’s Liberal government, the right man for the job of commissioner for the Pickton inquiry? The answer was obvious before he spent $10 million of taxpayers’ money. His credibility was tainted by his political baggage right from the start. Since Oppal released his 63 recommendations, the B.C. Liberals have been scurrying about expressing sudden concern. If they were sincerely concerned about the plight of forsaken women, especially those in Vancouver’s Downtown

Eastside, the Liberals would have acted long ago. Oppal didn’t uncover a hidden treasure chest of secrets, he just regurgitated the obvious. Furthermore, he could have submitted a two- or three-page summary months and months ago, instead of writing 1,448 pages that will go largely unread. But the timing for the release of his report is good for the Liberals. They can now make lots of political promises and announce a few substantive changes during the spring election. The Harewood Neighbourhood Plan process moves into the next phase now that Phase 1 (neighbourhood context) and Phase 2 (issues and opportunities) have been completed. At the Issues and Opportunities workshop held Nov. 7, a good turnout of residents put forward a number of ideas and issues to be discussed. A two-day design charrette concluded Phase 2 on Dec. 1, prompting Phase 3 to begin, with the objective of preparing goals and actions. A transportation analysis plan is also being undertaken to improve road networks and connectivity. The plan is expected to be complete in Fall 2013 at a cost of $60,000.

Tickets not child’s play With the holiday season here, the B.C. Lottery Corporation reminds gift givers to use their “game sense” and only give lottery tickets to players 19 years of age or older. “Our scratch and win games are very popular gifts and stocking stuffers, but we remind everyone that these are a form of gambling and not child’s play,” said Paul Smith, of the BCLC. “We’re posting responsible giving messages at lottery retailers across B.C. to let holiday shoppers know to think twice about whose stocking they might be stuffing.”

Maeve O’Byrne, president of the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation, accepts a cheque for $49,641 from representatives of the Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival Society and Save-OnFoods. The money goes toward the purchase of a new digital mammography unit for Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

To encourage responsible play and responsible gift-giving, BCLC is communicating this message through online advertising, social media and a network of digital signage at more than 4,000 lottery retailers and BC’s 34 casinos or community gaming centres. “Any type of gambling should be seen as an adult form of entertainment,” said Smith. “Parents need to talk to their kids about the risks of gambling and do their part to prevent them from participating.” For more information, please go to www.gamesense.ca.

DEATHS

Doreen O. D Anderson

June 6, 1926 - December 8, 2012 Doreen passed away, peacefully, with Jack, Janis and Karen by her side. She will be lovingly remembered by her family: son, Jack (Janice); daughter, Janis (Henry) Zwynenburg; her 5 grandsons and their families: Keene (Darche), Rylan, Kyler, Mykaela and Mackenzie, Derek (Siri), Clay (Jen), Jake and Logan, Jace (Brianne) and her brother, Bruce (Jean) Pausche. She was predeceased by her husband, Jack “Majorâ€? Anderson in 1965; her sister, Betty Charles in 2000; her mother, Olive Pausche (Biggs) in 1992 and her dad, Joseph Pausche in 1950. Doreen, being widowed at a young age, moved from Duncan to Nanaimo to be closer to family. She worked in the grocery industry for many years in various capacities in Duncan, Nanaimo and Parksville. Once she retired, Doreen’s loves in life were nature, cooking for family (teaching all 5 grandson’s how to cook and sew) needlepoint, knitting, crafts, reading and playing scrabble on her computer. Many thanks to her niece, Karen (Ki) Charles for her support during this difďŹ cult time. We would also like to thank We Care and Home Support for helping us care for Mom at home. A family gathering was held on Sunday, December 16th. In lieu of owers, the family would appreciate donations to the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre in Errington.

Could you make friends by the hundreds, maybe thousands, and remember them all by name? Could you show caring and loyalty without fearing judgement for having emotions? Could you listen to music and know every song by heart, writers and singers included? Could you travel to places you’ve already seen, and still ďŹ nd the perfect souvenir? Could you love someone else’s child if they came to you lost, confused, or in need of someone who would just listen? Could you handle three quarters of Nanaimo’s dogs jumping on you and licking your face? Graham could. With special thanks to Susan. “You’re gone but not forgotten. You’re runnin with the pack.â€? McNish Hazel Cunliffe (nee Peck)

Hazel passed away peacefully on November 19, 2012 at Nanaimo Senior’s Village. Pre-deceased by her husband Alexander (Sandy) in 1972, and her brother Edward and sister-in-law Alison. Hazel leaves to remember her: 2 stepsons, Jim and Gordon, and stepdaughter Heather; also, residing in the United Kingdom, nephew Donald Peck, and nieces Rosamund McFarlane and Sylvia Wyatt and their families. Hazel was born in Somerset England on August 29, 1921. At a young age, she moved with her parents and brother to live in Montreux, Switzerland where she spent most of her childhood, and began her lifelong love and appreciation of mountains, nature and especially wild owers. Hazel later returned to live in Lincoln, England to complete her high school education. In the summer of 1939, Hazel came to Canada on vacation. With the outbreak of WW2, she decided to remain in Canada and attend University of Toronto where she became one of the ďŹ rst graduates in physiotherapy. Following graduation, Hazel enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces Medical Corps. She was deployed to Italy and was present at the liberation of Rome. After the war, Hazel came to Vancouver where she was Chief of Physiotherapy at Shaugnessy Veterans Hospital. Here she met and married Sandy. Together they returned to the UK for several years, living and working in London, Dunoon and Greenock. Hazel and Sandy returned to Canada’s west coast in the late 60’s, settling in Nanaimo where Hazel worked as a physiotherapist at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. She specialized in orthopaedics, and spent several years as Chief of Physiotherapy, during which time she started Nanaimo’s Red Cross Loan Program. Hazel was widowed in 1972 and continued to work at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital until her retirement. After retirement, Hazel had more time for travelling. She returned to Switzerland, England and Scotland and made camping trips through Alaska, Yukon, Northwest Territories, BC, Alberta and several US National Parks. She also travelled to Iceland, Turkey, Australia, New Zealand and Kenya. Hazel’s other hobbies included photography, stamp collecting, knitting; studying wild owers and geography. She was a member of the Nanaimo Field Naturalists for many years and took several trips with them. More recently Hazel belonged to the Post Polio Support Group, and the Better Breathers Group. Hazel lived independently in her own home until 6 years ago when she moved to Nanaimo Senior’s Village. There she made and enjoyed new friendships and received the support, companionship and care with dignity which she had always shown others during her life. Donations, in memory of Hazel, may be made to Nanaimo Community Hospice, or the Canadian Lung Association.

’Tis the week before Christmas… BY IAN THORPE

’T

is the week before Christmas, that time of the year, When friends are acknowledged with words of good cheer. Athletes, like others, call “time out” and pause, Awaiting the visit of fellow named Claus. My annual present each year at this time, Is a series of greetings arranged as a rhyme. The aim is to offer a thank you of sorts, To folks who are known for involvement in sports.

N

ow onto the fields where soccer teams mix; With seven-a-side, Curr gets his kicks. Girls at provincials achieved quite a feat; Shires with Impact did title repeat. In soccer for kids, there’s Cochrane and Lee, Jackobsen, Dick and Crumpton, I see. Isbister, Cowling, watch youth players run, With Stephens and Neibel, Doumont and Dunn. Harbour City FC is youth soccer’s new name, With Whitecaps as partners could Roden exclaim. Academy players with Bolton will train; If Sommerfeld’s reffing, let no one complain!

I can’t make a claim to have talent in verse; It seems every year that my poetry’s worse, With metre that’s faulty and misses the mark, And rhymes more unstable than Colliery Dam Park!

Merriman, Kang, coached in Mariners’ den; National silver was claimed by the men. Baird to provincials took Dover Bay guys; Lang as top scorer won Golden Boot prize!

Some lines that are flawed you’ll have to excuse, But here are some names for all to peruse. Apologies also to people I’ve missed; There are simply too many to fit on my list!

Lads on United like Adams have fun; Valentim’s coaching the squad in Div. 1. But another men’s team did this season appear; Highlanders start-up made Stefanek cheer.

L

et’s start on the ice where hockey teams play; Also ringette, as Christie will say. In hockey for youth, Bortolotto stands tall, With Beattie, Borrelli, Hodgson and Paul.

C

ommunity football had Faickney in sight, With Fletcher and Mutch, Craven and Wright. Coach Cooper in Harewood for football was keen; Guiding the Redmen could Roden be seen.

Mitchell with Bajkov and Jones will avow, That coaching award was presented to Pow. Hockey for Vokins means casual league; Referee Robillard shows no fatigue.

Lindsay and Wall played for Islanders here; Their team made return to the AA tier. Barsby had Taylor and Vollet who vied, But Stevenson’s Bulldogs had title denied.

Skating with vigour come old-timers bold, Like Brydges and Monk, Dugan and Gold. Rec hockey players want tournaments here, But can’t get a licence for locker room beer! Brzovic, Campbell, sought ball hockey fame, Making attempt for the world’s longest game. In roller-skate derby, with jamming and blocks, Burgoyne on the Nemesis handles the knocks.

Clippers this season will play in high gear; Our junior A franchise marks 40th year. Vandekamp’s coaching will strike the right chord; Though Bestwick left ship, now Abassi’s on board!

Back on the ice, there’s Silvertips crew; Dubyna’s in charge, as coach that is new. Junior B Bucs once again did take flight; Levesques are the owners, and coaching is Knight.

All players contribute as part of the whole, Like Argue and Schamerhorn tending the goal. McNicholas, Fraser and Grant are all set; With Kramer, Fitzgerald, there’s no need to fret;

Blokker and Raiders had quarterback key, As Yantz threw historic 100th TD. Six times had the Raiders been champs of B.C., But losing to Langley put end to their spree. Pioneer Park is where rugby is taught; Hornets have Eathorne, Marshall and Scott. Women’s coach Hadikin had the right stuff, With Collicutt, Peterson, Douglas, McGuff. ◆

Hosting provincials saw junior girls shoot, With Angell and Battie, Lundgren and Dhoot. McDougall and Diplock, lacrosse sticks did wield, As Raiders with Terris and Wall hit the field.

Rounis for volleyball coaches at camps; His teams of Express have become Island champs! Savrtka and Warren serve over the net, Where Maitland with Nelson and Nichol are set.

Senior A T-men had start that was strong, Then Nicholson’s crew saw the season go wrong. On roster was Ranger, top scorer who shined; Webster was coach, but now he’s resigned!

Calvin and Richardson volley on beach; For Mariner men’s team does Avender teach. VIU women got coaching from Hyde; Gold medal at nationals filled them with pride!

Swanson and Maughan did Timbermen steer; Senior B entry made playoffs this year. Junior A coaches were in quite a fix; Top players got traded, but no-one told Nicks!

Walleyball action sees Kossey make plays; Morgan, Savoy, enjoy pickleball craze. Fontaine with his racquet for workout will go; Squash club has Birks, now teaching as pro.

I

At junior B level, Rinas would agree, With Mickelson’s naming as team MVP. But fans at all levels were made sadder by far, By passing of Wipper, a Hall of Fame star.

Diplock, lacrosse stick did wield…

For tennis there’s Newsome to show what to do; Westwood has Fox and a restaurant too! At Bowen there’s Walmsley and Shahi quite able; Lawrence and Ford enjoy tennis on table!

hen weather is warm, a ball field’s the place Where Elmore and Moore get players on base. Larsen and Woods head up slo-pitch with style; For coffee league ladies, Wells has a smile.

W

Eby’s an expert with field hockey stick; Hassell when batting at cricket is slick. Rayner for horseshoes gets passion across; Ultimate Frisbee does Heydemann toss!

Fastball for women had Petersen keen; In rec league for ladies, Smith would be seen. Mainwaring with fastball for men could be found; May Bennett was site where winners were crowned. Wheatsheaf had talent that carried the day, With Lucas and Hunter, McCormick and Vey. With medal at Westerns the players could strut; Honoured as well were sponsors named Hutt. Fastball for minors saw Cawthorne at plate, As Nichol, deLaronde and Johnson relate. In softball came Breakers in victory mode; For medal of silver did Nitro explode!

Walker and Allin hit badminton bird; Binns and McGuire as coaches are heard. Juniors like Forster and Wong love to smash; Plensky won gold and so did Ramash!

Passing of Wipper, a hall of fame star.

Give it your best, whatever you do, But always show class – good sportsmanship too. And now I’ll exclaim to all readers in sight: Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

At BMX races in Davidson Park, A national title did Greskovits spark. Mountain bike riders like Brady, Perdue, Trail around Westwood are hoping to view!

At Rotary Bowl, the track club did win, With Seaman, DeSchiffart, Ramage and Pynn. Bailey and Higgins were bantams on track, With Doughty and Heisterman leading the pack!

Graham’s Christmas Pick! Pick 2012 VW Passat TDI

No matter what sport, one rule is the same: Always play fair, whatever the game! And try to remember that when you compete, Be humble in winning, show grace in defeat.

Thibodeau’s out running; Burrett as well, As Jakobsen, Ross and Palfery will tell. Triathletes were Struthers and Trajan so fleet; At Ironman, Condon and Boyd did compete.

Ian Thorpe writes about sports Saturdays in the Bulletin. This is the 31st edition of his annual sports-themed Christmas poem.

nd now that my poem is nearing its end, Some timely reminders I’d like to extend: Keep yourself active, get out and take part; You’ll feel a lot better and strengthen your heart.
